- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. 54-year-old Robert Spurl is facing weapons charges
- 0:10Speaker 2: after reports of a man threatening another with a firearm
- 0:13Speaker 2: on the weekend. The call came in to police around 3.30
- 0:17Speaker 2: Saturday morning in the area of New Cove Road in St. John's.
- 0:22Speaker 2: The operation forced the temporary closure of roads in the area.
- 0:26Speaker 2: RNC say the home in question was contained and the
- 0:30Speaker 2: Tactics and Rescue Unit was called in to assist. The
- 0:33Speaker 2: accused left the multi-unit property without incident and was taken
- 0:37Speaker 2: into custody. The RNC's Criminal Investigation Division seized a BB
- 0:42Speaker 2: gun that resembled a handgun from the property, as well
- 0:46Speaker 2: as pellets and CO2 cartridges. Spurl is facing a variety
- 0:50Speaker 2: of weapons charges, including pointing a firearm, uttering threats, and
- 0:55Speaker 2: assault with a weapon. A 29-year-old has been charged following
- 1:00Speaker 2: a break-in at the pharmacy in St. George's early Saturday morning.
- 1:04Speaker 2: RCMP say the suspect was found inside the pharmacy when
- 1:08Speaker 2: they arrived. Police say he refused to comply with commands
- 1:11Speaker 2: to leave the business and the building was contained. The
- 1:15Speaker 2: suspect ran from the scene as officers were making their
- 1:18Speaker 2: way inside. Police dog Pez tracked Tyrone Lasega down and
- 1:22Speaker 2: he was taken to hospital for assessment and treatment. He
- 1:25Speaker 2: was remanded to custody pending a court appearance on charges
- 1:29Speaker 2: of break and enter with intent, resisting an officer, and
- 1:32Speaker 2: failing to comply with a release order. Police say further
- 1:35Speaker 2: charges are possible. It costs a little less to fill
- 1:39Speaker 2: up on fuels this morning. However, prices remain sky high.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Gas is down by two cents a liter. Diesel drops
- 1:48Speaker 2: by over three cents on the island and by about
- 1:51Speaker 2: two and a half cents in Labrador West. Furnace oil
- 1:55Speaker 2: is down by close to 3 cents. The price of
- 1:58Speaker 2: stove oil is down by less than 2 cents per liter.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Flyers across the United States face massive travel disruptions on
- 2:06Speaker 2: Monday after equipment outages stopped flights at Newark Liberty International
- 2:11Speaker 2: Airport in New Jersey and Philadelphia Airport in Pennsylvania. More
- 2:16Speaker 2: than 1,000 flights were cancelled nationwide and over 6,000 were delayed.
- 2:22Speaker 3: There was this back up 600 foot fiber line that
- 2:26Speaker 3: was just inoperable and we're learning that it was accidentally
- 2:29Speaker 3: cut by a New Jersey Transit construction crew. That's what
- 2:33Speaker 3: triggered all of this. And then they weren't able to
- 2:35Speaker 3: fix it. They really tried to fix it. They weren't
- 2:37Speaker 3: able to fix it for quite a long time.
- 2:40Speaker 2: The Liberal government has introduced legislation which it says will
- 2:44Speaker 2: help unions and employers get to deals faster and reduce
- 2:48Speaker 2: labor disruptions in the economy. Bill C-39 includes changes to
- 2:53Speaker 2: streamline project approvals across the country and adjustments to the
- 2:57Speaker 2: Canada Labour Code. Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu says the changes
- 3:01Speaker 2: will strengthen labour rights through changes to the Labour Code,
- 3:05Speaker 2: though critics argue they weaken them.
- 3:07Speaker 1: In terms of workers' rights, we're actually strengthening their rights,
- 3:11Speaker 1: that if in a worst-case scenario a minister must refer
- 3:14Speaker 1: to the CIRB, parties who are deadlocked in dispute, that
- 3:19Speaker 1: there are stronger criteria than ministering.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Indians don't agree, though.
- 3:21Speaker 3: They say this is weakening the right to strike.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Well, they're incorrect, and I would encourage them to certainly
- 3:27Speaker 1: contact us.
- 3:28Speaker 2: The government says it's to keep pace with a rapidly
- 3:31Speaker 2: changing economy while protecting workers' rights to strike. The Newfoundland
- 3:36Speaker 2: and Labrador Liquor Corporation's new store on Topsail Road in St.
- 3:40Speaker 2: John's will open early next year. Here's Richard Duggan.
- 3:44Speaker 4: The NLC released its financial performance for the first quarter
- 3:47Speaker 4: of the 2026-27 fiscal year yesterday. They say the lease
- 3:51Speaker 4: agreement for the new location, which is located inside the
- 3:54Speaker 4: old Walmart building, has been finalized and the store will
- 3:57Speaker 4: open in the fourth quarter of the fiscal, which would
- 3:59Speaker 4: be within the first few months of 2027. The NLC
- 4:02Speaker 4: has also awarded an RFP for a new store in Placentia,
- 4:06Speaker 4: which is slated to open soon. Meanwhile, several new cannabis
- 4:09Speaker 4: retailers are set to open throughout the province. Earlier this year,
- 4:13Speaker 4: the NLC issued a call for up to 15 new
- 4:15Speaker 4: stores in rural and underserved communities. They say several of
- 4:18Speaker 4: those stores are expected to open in the third quarter
- 4:21Speaker 4: of the fiscal, meaning either later this year or early next.
- 4:25Speaker 2: A gander woman is taking her cooking skills to the
- 4:28Speaker 2: national stage. 38-year-old Rebecca Abbott is one of 16 home
- 4:33Speaker 2: cooks competing in the new season of MasterChef Canada, which
- 4:37Speaker 2: premieres tonight. Abbott, a reservist with the Air Cadet Program,
- 4:41Speaker 2: says she draws on the discipline of her military training
- 4:44Speaker 2: when the pressure is on in the kitchen. Her standout
- 4:48Speaker 2: dish is pan-seared chicken breast with Newfoundland savory potato cakes
- 4:52Speaker 2: and blueberry tarragon sauce. MasterChef Canada premieres at 8.30 tonight,
- 4:58Speaker 2: 8 o'clock, in most of Labrador on CTV. That's your news.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland.
