- 0:41Hamster with a blunt, penknife the Doctor, Who commentaries
- 0:44podcasts. I'm feet.
- 0:47What should I do? You know how many plural, when
- 0:53you're here? It's gonna catch on sooner or
- 0:56later. Everyone else is also going to
- 0:57realize that you've done more than one bloody commentary.
- 0:59So is what should be, you know, how many of these have gone out
- 1:02now? Give us time, just wave done
- 1:05some episodes 5 6 times now because I just think Step aside.
- 1:13That's me. Talking a lot of bullshit.
- 1:15I'll tell you. That's a lot of opinions.
- 1:22Hey, hi. How you doing?
- 1:24No. I'm very well.
- 1:24Thank you. It's been a little while since
- 1:26we did our stones of blood commentary it has.
- 1:29Yeah. And we've kind of run out of
- 1:31spooky. Ladies in woods, there are no,
- 1:34it sounds like to be honest. That's what I watched on TV
- 1:37phone. No, it's nicely went well.
- 1:39We've done all the gothic one, then we take them all.
- 1:41Hmm, Stevens stated the kk9 companies blood and often 55,
- 1:47which is also Gothic insane way. And just fabulous do, I seem
- 1:52more and more Pious about that one in the affirmative.
- 1:55Now - yeah, I think it's slowly. It happens you way it once.
- 2:02It was the shock of something so completely left field that got
- 2:06people. But that's why I asked you the
- 2:08question. Don't ask you.
- 2:11Did you not power the doctor? Yeah.
- 2:14Yeah. Like to call it up quite a lot,
- 2:16didn't completely. But, yeah, I'll be like, yeah.
- 2:20Okay. With a few caveats.
- 2:22Yeah, you know, but not like, I've been telling people for
- 2:25years, of course, she threw the pocket.
- 2:28Watch down the thing at the end of flags.
- 2:31It's bound to come back in the finale, and we're bound to get
- 2:34an expert a bit more detail. On do Martin's doctor as I know.
- 2:39I don't give a shit. Okay, fair enough.
- 2:41But we did get Sacha to are looking super hot in this vessel
- 2:43McCoy's jumper. So and of course, obviously
- 2:50Sophie, and Janet just estimating that I'll press on my
- 2:54buttons. You know what, I thought he was
- 2:56going to try and redeem Tegan and the fact that she was a
- 2:59grumpy bitch throughout the entire thing.
- 3:00I was like yes this is exactly how she would get off me.
- 3:03Yeah, yeah, okay. Well today, look, we're here to
- 3:07talk about a what I A lot of people would consider a classic
- 3:11the empty child and the doctor dolls is the last time, the
- 3:14Doctor Who magazine did a big pole?
- 3:16I think it pole somewhere in like the top 20 I think maybe
- 3:20even the top 10. You just tell me before we
- 3:24started recording that you're full of facts and you've got
- 3:25them all completely memorized and the first fact she's like
- 3:30I'm looking, I'm looking to you for confirmation but I don't
- 3:33know. The person I want to be a
- 3:35popular story. Is a popular story.
- 3:39Is this is that I know you are a little bit ambivalent when it
- 3:44comes to Steven Moffat, as a showrunner of Doctor Who and
- 3:49that has been discussed elsewhere in the trial of Steven
- 3:52Moffat over in the The 91 be praised for you did a fabulous.
- 3:55XO for that, however, this is Steven Moffat, right at the
- 4:00beginning of his Doctor Who Korea.
- 4:03The are believing that you, you quite like?
- 4:06What do you mean? The rusty Davis time?
- 4:09Yeah, yeah. Going back.
- 4:09This is so to 3rd May 2005 the for a period of several days
- 4:13Steven Moffat is my favorite Doctor.
- 4:15Who ride forever. He's because of this story.
- 4:17Yeah, yeah, it's just so refreshing.
- 4:19And I mean yeah, it's because we're on the verge of another.
- 4:26It's so cool. Going back.
- 4:26This is the first time. I've done a Russell T, Davies
- 4:28episode every episode with, you know.
- 4:30Yeah. And it's so cool.
- 4:30Going back and looking at it now that it's a million years old
- 4:33and we're Million years old, seeing the what that
- 4:37remembering, what it was like when it was so fresh.
- 4:39And I was still quite wary of whether I was going to like new
- 4:42Doctor Who or not having, loved loved it, loved Rose.
- 4:46And then other, this whole first series was just a sort of
- 4:48terrifying roller coaster ride of, is it going to be popular?
- 4:52Is it going to get canceled again?
- 4:53Do I like it, does it matter if I like it?
- 4:57Yeah, well, thank you, Ry think, at this point when empty
- 5:00cylinders dancers came out, we'd had darling.
- 5:02It was It in very decent ratings I know Christopher Eccleston had
- 5:08submitted his regular resignation but a second season
- 5:11and another Christmas special had been commissioned.
- 5:14So it was like the future was Breyer this point and the
- 5:17audience response was really strong.
- 5:19The critical response was really strong and then this here and I
- 5:24was like, fuck me if it can hit these kind of heights we are in
- 5:30safe hands. Yeah I think Steven Moffat
- 5:33probably Could do no wrong all the way up to.
- 5:37We need to go for a show, run well, and that's why I hope so.
- 5:41I deliberately haven't really watched this in advance of
- 5:43watching this, and I haven't watched it for 23 years, maybe
- 5:45more. And so it's still going to be.
- 5:47So it's gonna be quite fresh to me, and coming back to it.
- 5:50Now, in the post, my Fiera, hopefully, if there's any
- 5:52marketing things that came to annoy me later, they won't annoy
- 5:55me watching it now. And I'll be able to enjoy as
- 5:57much as the other side. Or one thing struck me because I
- 6:00pre watch this with the commentary on which As I did
- 6:04mention to you in a text message was smugness distilled because
- 6:08it was John Barrowman and Steven Moffat talking.
- 6:11But one thing that really really struck me was all those sort of
- 6:14elements, I'm not. So keen on the over sexual
- 6:18ization of the doctor, the smugness of the dialogue, the
- 6:24sort of overly cleverness, the apparent.
- 6:26Cleverness in the script, it was all there but it was a little
- 6:31more tentative than it was. Later on, it was a little lot
- 6:35less of in your face. And I think a lot of the
- 6:38elements that Rusty Davis would bring to a story, which is like
- 6:41a real focus on character and atmosphere.
- 6:46And I even the dialogue felt a little different from my office
- 6:49time. I do I feel like this there's
- 6:51something different about the collaboration of those two than
- 6:55there is when Moffitt was just saw cut loose.
- 6:59Yeah. And left his own devices.
- 7:02Yeah. Interesting fangio was.
- 7:05What guess what? Situate, yeah.
- 7:07Excuse me. Okay.
- 7:10Well, what does your nuts colors in?
- 7:12Okay, get ready to dance in three.
- 7:14Two, one. Go three credit sequence.
- 7:19I still get excited by their preset.
- 7:20Good, pre-credit sequence. It looks like a plug, doesn't
- 7:22it? It looks like a sink.
- 7:24Oh, I think he looks like but moon, but it does get to the
- 7:30point very quickly. This Yes, other.
- 7:34Yeah, yeah, we're crashing in and it's nice to start with a
- 7:37regular ol, Mo velour, can I ask you, almost immediately please
- 7:42where you fall with the Ninth Doctor and Rose.
- 7:46A really good luck. Yeah, a good combination because
- 7:49she's not too. She's she's not a sort of in or
- 7:52of his awesomeness as much as she is with the tenth doctor.
- 7:56So she's what he's trying to impress her and she's being
- 7:59she's not always immediately impressed whereas the Tips.
- 8:04It all goes horribly wrong, in my opinion, but lesson is great
- 8:08and their son way we've flown into the title sequence which
- 8:12adds always, why does the Target that really is the bit where the
- 8:16Tardis or two coming up? Does everyone always say this
- 8:18when you do know, never got that perfect Tardis spins around as
- 8:26you get the think again. But here, the thing kicks in a
- 8:29little bit later time as ever Pete, you're reading on Doctor,
- 8:31Who is completely unique. I don't believe it.
- 8:35I'm sure there's other people out there who want that to be
- 8:38treated every time it see it isn't a good title The Empty
- 8:41child. The although discover the chart,
- 8:43this is a foreshadowing, the word title in the word child in
- 8:47the title is is a bad time. Don't put children in Doctor Who
- 8:51it's a good title. Is a fantastic idea.
- 8:55It's a creepy idea and it's a great image of the kid with the
- 8:58gas miles. And we'll talk about that later
- 8:59on. So simple.
- 9:01So I think so, You know in series to Jane tranter said to
- 9:06Rusty Dave easily, if you're gonna do any more historical
- 9:09stories, all right, you got up the pace a bit.
- 9:11Do you think she's talking about this one?
- 9:14It doesn't feel like a historical does it?
- 9:16Because it's not got but it'll bring it is okay?
- 9:20What am I? That, I think we have, we need
- 9:22more categories than any other. We've got a historical and
- 9:25Studio historical, which nobody seems to bother with any more
- 9:27because we don't do pure historicals, but there's
- 9:30historical basis. There's a circles where they
- 9:32really are Like this isn't the doctor trying to change the
- 9:34outcome of the second world war. It's just a place where this
- 9:38alien stuff is going to happen rather than a story rather.
- 9:42Yeah, it's just it's like, it's just like there's two sub
- 9:44categories, there's ones where there in the past and the
- 9:47outcome of the second work. For example, if this was all
- 9:49about ensuring that someone didn't change history, so that
- 9:53Germany won the second world war.
- 9:54That's one type of story. And this isn't that, this is the
- 9:57other time, and what? How would you categorize this?
- 9:59And what about really long sentence?
- 10:01I just said, should be done. I just have to say that if we
- 10:04call sign a fucking Tom Kelly, we just have the first mummy.
- 10:08Oh yeah, offstage I mean is there are extended scenes of
- 10:15atmosphere and this has a measured Pace rather than a
- 10:20furious Pace. Yes.
- 10:22Yes. I like that.
- 10:24Yeah. And it's a to, it feels more
- 10:27comfortable. In its episode, its length than
- 10:29the previous two, parter relations of London and World
- 10:32War 3, where they were Charging and got to keep going, Ladies of
- 10:35London world war three. Is almost, it feels almost like
- 10:36it just apart one that keeps going again.
- 10:39Get a part where it starts at part one pace, and just stays at
- 10:41it at a charge all the way through.
- 10:43That's fine. But this feel, this is more
- 10:45like, no. Okay, we've got, we've got an
- 10:46hour and a half to tell this story for the.
- 10:50It feels like a staff. That old old money for episode
- 10:52length is getting used a bit more with time to get to know
- 10:55the characters you get to know Nancy.
- 10:57Really what I mean, Richard Wilson's character comes along
- 10:59later. It's a single scene and you get
- 11:01to know him very well with that saying, Yeah, I couldn't believe
- 11:04it when it was an asshole. Shut up.
- 11:09I could not eat what? It was.
- 11:15Yes, you could not believe that he's in it and not like the
- 11:26doctor or the master. He's just like to me is like,
- 11:28it's just your it was announced, but it was announced that he was
- 11:31going to be a doctor who I'm not.
- 11:32Just this is one the most, Famous people has ever been in
- 11:34Doctor. Who, how could it must be?
- 11:36That one person is behind it all.
- 11:38And it's actually not that they are obvious, very good role, but
- 11:40he's not exactly what he's Mister X position, isn't it?
- 11:46Can I take this as a opportunity to say something?
- 11:51I've been meaning to say for a long, long time?
- 11:53Hmm, it has to be you. Well, I've you singing Joe.
- 12:00You said you weren't gonna say cause I was gonna say now some
- 12:05of the songs in this, we're not written until the late 1940s,
- 12:08but we won't quibble as opposed to not be that fan and that corn
- 12:13is sweet potatoes. Oh honey just I love the the
- 12:17right that the caption for it, on, on the iPlayer, homeless
- 12:21children, in Wartime London, a terrorized by an unearthly
- 12:24child. Oh my God, we've got an Insider
- 12:28writing. The captains, have a every
- 12:30child. I think that's got legs, you
- 12:31know? Yeah, I could catch him.
- 12:34It's got to if the nanites have fixed it, but that's another
- 12:37issue. Do you know what love is about
- 12:39this scene in the country. It goes because I can't believe
- 12:42I did this whole sequence in this club, just for that
- 12:45terrible. Bulgy gag about the bombs
- 12:48because I just want to. So we'll go to the bank.
- 12:50So it doesn't tell you what, there's a lot of atmosphere down
- 12:53there. Yeah eautiful and now we got.
- 12:56So now we got the green screen action already.
- 12:59Paisa dangling like this at the time.
- 13:16Painting has come to life is great.
- 13:18Yeah yeah. It's one of the it's just so
- 13:21well done and just and of course her maybe not in this t-shirt.
- 13:27Do you realize something? What what you the stories you've
- 13:30done? I think might be you know, one
- 13:32of the handful of stories that will have nighttime filming K9 &
- 13:36Company. Yeah, the demons has a nighttime
- 13:40sequence at the beginning, this job doesn't put it in case
- 13:44underground in the dark. I look like Yeah, I want it.
- 13:46I want that places. That's true.
- 13:48The cat's got nine hundred years of phone box travel, so he's
- 13:53saying he's younger than specificity McCoy, said he was
- 13:56943 and I don't have to keep saying this, don't be that
- 13:59family. Okay.
- 14:02You remember the telephone ringing, how exciting that was?
- 14:04Yeah, that doesn't happen. And why is there a he says why
- 14:10is nobody done this in the 50 years?
- 14:13Why isn't it? What's the name of the woman who
- 14:18plays met Nancy what mr. Facts at his fingertips and we
- 14:23stick? Mr. Got got too many tabs open,
- 14:27I'll get back to you on that one.
- 14:28Well this she meant to be she took a sort of ambiguous.
- 14:33Look about that. A child can't go out to some.
- 14:34Yeah, yeah, so yeah, the wrong age.
- 14:39I'm done waiting. I'm not sure if she meant to be
- 14:42like, 90 about roses age is what I'm thinking.
- 14:45If you, To me. She was like 20.
- 14:47I'll say oh yeah. If you said to me she was closer
- 14:49to 30, I go. Oh yeah.
- 14:51You know, she's not sort of person.
- 14:52Yeah. My name is Florence.
- 14:54Howth unusual name. Being a cheerleader is H.
- 14:57Phenomenally goes. Yeah.
- 15:03Eccleston does. He's got the, a you my mummy on
- 15:07the phone. Now, this is, and this is a cash
- 15:09for obviously, a catchphrase, bring Braun being born.
- 15:13There's no who don't even blink. Muffy's could a catchphrase,
- 15:15isn't even bastard. It's got a catchphrase for
- 15:17everything. What I later on, what was the
- 15:22catfish in? The silence?
- 15:25Go, nobody can remember. They had one, but nobody can
- 15:27remember it. Yeah, he might deliver a joke.
- 15:30Saudis on his mic stand. And just the Tardis down a dark
- 15:38alleyway like that. And then the rainwater I guess
- 15:41this really is night shooting, it really.
- 15:43It would you can tell ya, you can tell on the quality of their
- 15:47faces. I think, you know, this links
- 15:49into the cliches, like Tallow, the stars are love this woman
- 15:52because ha ha ha. Yes, you're right.
- 15:56Going on Yeah he did a few more than it did the first few of the
- 16:08next season and then didn't come back again which is a shame
- 16:12because he's very in tune. Yeah.
- 16:18Is she goes now in to steal the food?
- 16:21And their custom proves. It's quite surprisingly that he
- 16:25works extremely well with children.
- 16:28Yeah we've progressed he hadn't really done before.
- 16:32Isn't it amazing to think this 1940s kitchen?
- 16:34Is this episode of Doctor Who is now as old as this 1940s kitchen
- 16:37was in 2005. That is terrifying, okay?
- 16:45I just loved it, isn't it? Amazing to think some Paul's
- 16:50Cathedral now is even older than it was.
- 16:52Then there's a lot of planes buzzing around that.
- 16:59I'd forgotten how many players they were always John Barrowman.
- 17:02Look excellent. Bottom pardon.
- 17:06Oh right. That's actually already there.
- 17:20Oh no, no well, he was always annoying.
- 17:23Anyway, talk about Captain Jack. Yes of screaming.
- 17:30Yeah, it does zoom in on us. Well, then he slaps his arse.
- 17:35I mean, it's like everything's playing answer the what he was
- 17:38accused of stuff. It's so in it, but that's the
- 17:40thing. Yeah.
- 17:41And the blurring of the lines between him and his character is
- 17:44an odd thing. Like there's never been as a
- 17:48never been Somebody cast in Doctor, Who prior to this, who's
- 17:52been sort of therefore, their star quality and Pizzazz which
- 17:57is what he's there for and and cast, I don't know the way, you
- 18:00know, the way he's John Barrowman doing an appearance as
- 18:02John Barrowman rather than really being a completely
- 18:05different character is nothing like Tom Batman.
- 18:07Can only think of one really Persona lies.
- 18:10I mean, before it's who else it was.
- 18:12His And you know Star Quality all the things you said.
- 18:20Oh yeah yeah. And so we come through into the
- 18:36dining room. Oh I love all of this with the
- 18:39kids and it's she's looking after the hole.
- 18:43You know what, right, you know, if the thing that shocked me
- 18:45about this is it has the most obvious answer to this.
- 18:51Are you my mummy twist all the way through and at no point.
- 18:56Did I figure? Oh yeah, I could possibly be his
- 18:59mother. Yeah, yeah, that's quite true.
- 19:02That's true. Yeah.
- 19:08And, and yeah, Now, who are you calling 2005 CGI?
- 19:16Yeah, I think it's holy. Oh.
- 19:17Well, isn't it? I think it's fun.
- 19:18It's it, then if it's been upscaled to HD on the iPlayer,
- 19:22probably, not what I'm watching it on my computer.
- 19:25Possibly video I'm texting and yeah.
- 19:31I can't really tell the difference of almost.
- 19:33I love that I do. And I did love the bit about no
- 19:35one ever believes that when he tells himself the phone, I
- 19:37remember that being a new 2000. God, I'll just remembered for
- 19:39mobile phones. Being new and planes complaining
- 19:42about them. Are you allowed to just have
- 19:46your phone on the plane? Now, it's been a while.
- 19:48No, you're still not allowed to. Yeah, well, I think less and
- 19:51less people comply. Here we go.
- 19:55Now and this this whole thing is to bring John Barrowman in as a
- 20:03yeah and he isn't it. Yeah, and he'd been created by
- 20:05Russell, T Davies isn't he's not a market correction although my
- 20:08foot changed him quite a bit but it was always.
- 20:11It was always in the structure for the story for this
- 20:12character. This this cocky space man from
- 20:14the future to turn up. And yet now, right, how did you
- 20:18at this point? I just immediately thought I
- 20:20really don't like him. He's smarmy an annoying.
- 20:23No, I was Opposite I thought, well, no, I just thought it was
- 20:27really refreshing to have a male character in Doctor Who that
- 20:30wasn't a trick and turlough, and that was actually a sassy and a
- 20:34bit sexy. You know, it's funny that that
- 20:37will gets transferred into her feelings for the doctor.
- 20:43In the next series Doctor Who she's swooning over, I think we
- 20:48should be grateful the River Song and Captain Jack Neville
- 20:51and honest about why this I think the screen can handle that
- 20:54A of them together. No Clash of egos would be quite
- 20:57remarkable. How God here comes the child.
- 21:00I forget about forgetting how much we see from the child's
- 21:02point of view. It's very spooky and just going
- 21:04back to not being able to remember.
- 21:06And I mean, the way the child is scarier, once you've found out
- 21:09what it really is I think there's a moment is just a kid
- 21:12one around the gas mask on which is a bit creepy.
- 21:13But all right. It's just a kid with a gas mask
- 21:16on. What's creepy about that?
- 21:18But like, you know, this sort of domestic setting you get here or
- 21:22around the table. The kids are having dinner
- 21:24during the are a I thought. This is the sort of thing you
- 21:26don't get later on from Offutt. This is the sort of warmth and
- 21:31do you know what I mean? Well, yeah, I mean compare it
- 21:34with the family and Christmas mum can't drive because she's a
- 21:38woman. I'll do you have to bring it all
- 21:40the way down. Thank you, that's all.
- 21:47Yeah. Was it the children get more
- 21:48annoying as they go along? Is because they get the chemist,
- 21:52AG stage children and which real children are right?
- 21:57Well, because the best thing here is these kids don't get,
- 21:59they don't have to do much. So there's plot doesn't really
- 22:02hinge on these children and their performances are just a
- 22:04nice touch here. He's Charming, the children was
- 22:09gonna do arrest you for starving.
- 22:13I like cheese mousse. Now this effectuation study.
- 22:17Yes, this evacuation story is All interesting because my
- 22:21parents lived in London in the blitz.
- 22:23A lot of money. A lot.
- 22:24My dad's family got got blitzed. It's Uncle and two of his aunt's
- 22:28were killed in a bombing raid. It was in catford South London,
- 22:34right at the start of the war before.
- 22:36They'd actually started bombing civilians regularly, they were
- 22:39bombing the docks and things and but if they couldn't get through
- 22:41to the docks because it was too much about balloons and stuff
- 22:45and one night and said the planes did you?
- 22:47I just turned around and gave up and fly back to wherever they
- 22:50come from. They come from the Netherlands
- 22:51and they, and they just ditched all their Bombs Over the suburbs
- 22:54on the way out of London. Because how many of us get to
- 22:55the real Target? And like people because no one
- 22:59had actually no bombs have been falling around there, people
- 23:01would come back into the houses and thought the raid was over
- 23:04and like, yeah, it is. My dad's dad had moved out a few
- 23:08years earlier because he was the oldest, but still living at home
- 23:10was his to his aunt, and his uncle and they're all, they're
- 23:13all killed and only the dog survived.
- 23:16That's a family. That's all.
- 23:17Family Blitz Legend. I don't know if they had an
- 23:20Anderson shelter because not everyone did you know, the, the
- 23:23corrugated iron things out in the garden.
- 23:25There was there were sort of giving out to some people, but
- 23:27you had to have a garden. And then I found a garden.
- 23:31Unfortunately, the closest a bomb came to my fat worthwhile.
- 23:34Fortunately, so, I mean, I'm not so keen on those or maybe I was
- 23:40down the end of the street. I think a couple of houses were
- 23:42leveled, but where was that? Truly, Gatwick, all right.
- 23:52Oh I love. You know I love all of the.
- 23:55You see these sort of tilted angles?
- 23:57Yeah. Going towards the door with the
- 23:59The Cellar. It's a sort of a way.
- 24:00Doctor Who's never really been shot before, isn't it?
- 24:03I like all of that. Well they sort of horror movies.
- 24:06Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 24:08And it Clips in Eclipse. Now it's interesting.
- 24:10How would we talk about Russell? T?
- 24:12Davies here at what how it looks will always say?
- 24:14Oh it was so bright and vibrant, but here, hello sort of bright
- 24:20but it's but it's very A beige. Yeah, obviously, just 1940s
- 24:23Brown was the color. It's all very, it's dark and
- 24:28spooky as well as unquiet dead, but it's still, I know you're
- 24:33saying there but they're still sort of pleasant on the.
- 24:36I the imagery I watched a rebel flesh and almost people recently
- 24:41and I'm telling you now that was not pleasant on the I do that
- 24:45exercise. I'm quite say that I actually
- 25:01say empty and empty child to me please.
- 25:07Why does the phone keep ringing? Is that I've explained I think
- 25:13it is. Yeah.
- 25:14I just don't remember what it is.
- 25:15The phone rings and the Mario goes off.
- 25:18Its nanites. Did it is the new Wizard did it
- 25:21all? It's probably the be so much
- 25:22electromagnetic energy generated by the nanites.
- 25:24Yeah, that'll be it. He's Clockwork monkeys.
- 25:26Having a Bash. Occasionally he does, but that's
- 25:46because he's finding his way. But in this one here, this is a,
- 25:49this is a, you just being so perfect.
- 25:52When kid says, I'm scared, what they are.
- 25:54Loved for into other second year, I would too.
- 25:58But then I'm worried that I would, I would have liked him
- 26:01lettuce. If they take it at the same
- 26:02direction, they took it anyway with him and Rose being in love
- 26:06with each other. And up each other's asses, I
- 26:09wouldn't I've gone off him. So in a way I'm glad not to know
- 26:14just have some. Yes, I remember you're the one
- 26:16person in the world. Who doesn't like the go in the
- 26:18fireplace on you? Oh God.
- 26:20Yeah. Bloody, wink.
- 26:24Coming to the house. I'm Doctor Who I'm waiting for
- 26:26this girl to be old enough me to Shag her.
- 26:31Fuck Moffitt. Oh boy.
- 26:39Anyway. Okay.
- 26:39Should I It's dark but whatever there are lights are very bright
- 26:44and colorful and her t-shirt Solaris was this when was the
- 26:49because the Union Jack came and has come and gone out of sort of
- 26:54being cool and retro and then being a chemical nature again
- 26:57like in those the 90s period the Spice Girls period but this is
- 27:00obviously quite a while after that and it's like she's like
- 27:02she's wearing sort of clothes from 10 years prior.
- 27:06Yeah, sure. Yeah.
- 27:07I mean she's 2005 wearing in T-shirt, but maybe people from
- 27:12was doing that in 2005, I don't remember.
- 27:14She has a look in series one, right?
- 27:16I thought it was abandoned in serious too.
- 27:18She's just looks so fucking cool when serious water and she
- 27:22simultaneously looks like the 19-year old ordinary person.
- 27:28You could meet any day and also looks like it's just an
- 27:31international Superstar at the same time and it and it's
- 27:35somehow harmonizes. You do our favorite.
- 27:37Look of those is a Boomtown when she's got the Pigtails really
- 27:42nice. I love it.
- 27:46I mean it's a very unusual right now, Spock, when she said that
- 27:55Star Trek, how many ordinary 19 year olds in 2005 who weren't
- 28:04sci-fi Geeks like us, which she isn't Mickey is it and in my
- 28:08heart and my head, I had to do a whole rash.
- 28:10As I should. What would a 19?
- 28:12It was an ordinary regular nineteen-year-old. 2005
- 28:14immediately said, oh you look like someone from a 1960s
- 28:17American Sci-Fi series. Wouldn't she have said what was
- 28:22written by Steven Moffat? And he's a big geek.
- 28:27I'm having a flashback to me 17 years ago, having all these
- 28:31thoughts for missing. This conversation could ever put
- 28:33you thought Spock maybe Mickey's Mickey's a geek.
- 28:35It's been meant that was said easy because I didn't do much
- 28:37geeky stuff but maybe is what he's done there.
- 28:40Hey, Tonya. Not he's totally amazed you.
- 28:42Not think about the not another genes that are rather important.
- 28:47Okay. Oh yeah.
- 28:53I was very confused because I was like, why are they talking
- 28:56about these Nifty little pixie dust thing that repairs?
- 29:00I hadn't. I just thought this was a weird
- 29:02anomaly obviously until the end. Yeah.
- 29:06And at this point with it, can get a, it's funny at this point,
- 29:09we can get away with It's tough because the because they are
- 29:12doing a lot of. Look at this magical universe,
- 29:14that work magical because wonderful universe that dr.
- 29:15Hussain so you do sometimes just get shown stuff by a story as a
- 29:20bit of world-building. There's not going to necessarily
- 29:22be a chekhov's gun but only, yeah.
- 29:24The Nanobots in the First Act to go off in the third, what can I
- 29:27ask you another question then? Yes.
- 29:30Well, you know, the end of the TV movie when the eye of Harmony
- 29:33opens and the pixie dust comes out and brings back Grace
- 29:36Holloway and oh yeah, I was screaming abuse at the screen at
- 29:39this. No jeans as well.
- 29:41I don't care screaming abuse at the strange thing that I think
- 29:48that's where as well. Yes.
- 29:50Yes. If the Tardis can just magically
- 29:52bring anyone back to life. What is this series for?
- 29:55What's the point of ever having another episode of Doctor Who
- 29:58you watch very closely? It stays 9:30 for the next five
- 30:01minutes. I'm surprised that they're left
- 30:03big. Bend light switched on during an
- 30:05air raid, maybe they did. I believe how I just have use
- 30:07the fact of turned it off. But then you've not got an
- 30:11iconic shot. So yeah, I love a bit of running
- 30:13over railway tracks. I'll be watch secret army.
- 30:16That's something to do the podcast so good.
- 30:19It's so good. And you've got to get over the
- 30:21yellow thing. Because Allah is such a
- 30:23stunningly. Good.
- 30:25How much did they take? All of it?
- 30:26100% it, just every character and I Lalo is like, just
- 30:30directly lifted from it, but slightly tweaked.
- 30:32And so gonna take out the woman in the bed looking into bed.
- 30:35Yes. Except it's his wife, not his
- 30:37old wife, not his mother. There's even a police by French
- 30:42policeman who because they're all Dutch.
- 30:44They think he speaks a bit funny.
- 30:46No, he's only in a couple of episodes but you've just you
- 30:51forget that in seconds because the drama so good.
- 30:53Sorry. We're talking about Doctor Who
- 30:55the a child. So she's hiding in the train and
- 30:58doctors, father. See, I'm doing the proper up.
- 31:00Duke your personal? Yeah, the last I'll leave you to
- 31:12it. Well, what would be at what were
- 31:17my fit? And hardness talk about a
- 31:21disparate honking experiment. What I'm off that muffin
- 31:23environment or them out of this plane.
- 31:25Oh laughs it says that it goes Chris Brooks and he goes the
- 31:29first time, you know, when you meet him, you realize just how
- 31:32extraordinarily handsome he is, you know, and one presidency has
- 31:36because he goes, it's astonishing.
- 31:37You put a camera on him and all that Force Falls away.
- 31:40Oh, I had such a clear picture of what
- 32:02dr. Ish was.
- 32:03And just blowing out, the water was such a genius, genius
- 32:06things. It would have been you, what
- 32:07would have been your choice then pre-announce I don't know.
- 32:11Let me get back to you on that one.
- 32:12Okay, if I didn't, I genuinely don't know.
- 32:14I don't. Yeah, I don't think I had anyone
- 32:17in mind. A particular actually, is this
- 32:19the honest answer like a ring binder noun companion.
- 32:22Oh yeah. Any possible was coming back.
- 32:24We were all. Well, we all had an interesting
- 32:27reaction to that. Oh, there we go.
- 32:29I see the so, they have. So they've just turned the oh
- 32:32no, it's him doing it with this thing to turning the clock light
- 32:35on and off, but that still sounds dodgy Florence.
- 32:38Hopefully is 31:21. I'm making this it's still
- 32:43Harbors an IEP that way for a while now.
- 32:49Well time was rationed in those days out so it worked.
- 32:52See look just I was mostly just this where like the companion
- 32:55is. So obviously being seduced, but
- 32:58actually there was a bit that in the classic series that's not
- 33:01without precedent. There's a.
- 33:02Yeah. And someone made a really good
- 33:04point. So it was obvious on one of the
- 33:05clever podcasts that we listen to sometimes.
- 33:07I think it might be an old man who fights from Tai Chi, but we
- 33:10We got hung up on the doctor being this character, who unique
- 33:13as a hero. And I do this as well.
- 33:15It's it's fascinating that he's a hero who isn't primarily
- 33:17remain mod motivated by romantic desire, to save the life of the
- 33:21woman. He loves.
- 33:22That's a very unusual thing for a hero to do because mud too
- 33:26because most heroes are doing that or its Captain Kirk is the
- 33:29woman of the week. But but then they pointed out,
- 33:33that that's also true of the Brigadier is doesn't have a
- 33:36saves lives. Liz Shaw doesn't have a sex
- 33:39life. It was just because it was a BBC
- 33:41show be made in the sixties and seventies.
- 33:43So there wasn't really a reason why everybody should keep that
- 33:47parked forever. But it still felt so weird to
- 33:52but I liked it. The rose is going down this
- 33:54road. What hits but being a
- 33:57three-dimensional person with with a love life and all that
- 34:00for other characters in it. I was what I was I went into it
- 34:02thinking or something like that and actually it's like owning
- 34:04it's fine. The world has been created as
- 34:08almost I mean that's missing but not quite what it is that what
- 34:12it's about. But yeah, character, who isn't
- 34:14primarily motivated in that way, is, isn't it?
- 34:18Isn't excitingly unusual thing to have but don't mean
- 34:20everyone's going to be like that.
- 34:21Excuse me, but he's sorry. That was around.
- 34:23He got married in Season One. Ok, in the Aztecs he did you say
- 34:29but his reaction upon hearing it.
- 34:39Now, what do you Think of the way that Rose is flirting,
- 34:43though. Barry, my she's got Mickey back
- 34:44home. Did you know, what do you think?
- 34:49I really hate it. When they do, go down that route
- 34:52with Amy Pond in the series 5. Yeah, with Rory.
- 34:56The doctor guy because I get is more of a whereas a lot of the
- 35:01it's just, it's all sort of employed here.
- 35:04It's not. She's and trying to you know,
- 35:07fuck John Barrowman, whereas Amy Pond is trying.
- 35:10You fuck? The docks are you know yes and
- 35:14there's that. There is a difference is I mean
- 35:16my name is a bit older. It's I mean our twenties.
- 35:18She is, isn't she? I think so.
- 35:20Yeah. Amy's supposed to be an early to
- 35:22mid-twenties Was Roses. Still a teenager finding no way
- 35:24of finding things out and stuff. So you don't you catch a lot
- 35:27more slack on that front but that's still complete asshole to
- 35:29Mickey in it. School reunions, everyone
- 35:32obviously it has wonderful things but the doctor is a
- 35:35complete shit to Mickey all the way through that.
- 35:39I mean, it's lame. Yeah.
- 35:41Yeah. But then Mickey gets a gun at
- 35:43the end. So that's the Redemption art
- 35:44from Russell. T Davies, get is an ark and he
- 35:47marries the doctors ex Sarah, okay.
- 35:51Russell. I'm really scared about the new
- 35:57era because our CD to bit about how much I'm going to like it or
- 36:01not. It's cut but it's a thrill
- 36:05through exciting. It's exciting.
- 36:07But nerve-wracking I feel like a knows what he can get away.
- 36:10Now, as always going to be a bit more leash.
- 36:12Well, we'll see. We'll see.
- 36:16Do you object to the doctor being sexualized?
- 36:20Then I do object to it, doesn't get boring, just because it
- 36:23certainly makes a mundane thing to do, when you've got, you
- 36:26know, finally characters vegetarian and then say, hey,
- 36:29let's do a story where they just eats loads of bacon.
- 36:31Obviously Stars here, isn't it? Because in the second episode, I
- 36:35talk about him dance. Yeah yeah.
- 36:38It's like always a grown-up show now.
- 36:40He can do that and say, hey, I'm going to go and do Torchwood if
- 36:43you want to see if you, I really like this.
- 36:46At the time though, I liked it. That element creeping in at the
- 36:49time. I thought this is a bit
- 36:51different. This is it's not so much grown
- 36:53up, but it's just reflect them because sometimes it is.
- 36:57But then we get ahold of season, three of them, bloody mooching
- 36:59over rows, the whole time, drinking Martha like shit.
- 37:01I like Martha was the first companion.
- 37:03I just pitied, I just thought I would hate to be in her shoes.
- 37:05I've been in her shoes and I would, why would you travel the
- 37:08universe as someone who treated you like that?
- 37:11It's like that's not, that's not the same anymore, Doctor Who to
- 37:13give me weirdly enough, you know, eyes and sees me long to
- 37:16get to that moment. But when she finally says to him
- 37:18at the end of free or arm off, see ya?
- 37:21You treat me terribly. It's rather satisfying but today
- 37:27I just didn't know I just thought.
- 37:28Oh yeah wish you hadn't bothered.
- 37:29I wish we'd had a different companion.
- 37:31Then instead of a companion is going to be miserable all year
- 37:32and then fuck off. What was the point of that?
- 37:35I mean, II, get your reading. I know people that think their
- 37:38combined I was rooting for Early.
- 37:40And I went through a big journey together, I was like, I remember
- 37:43loving her and rooting for her in particularly in family of
- 37:46blood and all that, I felt so sorry, but I said, but the
- 37:49problem was, I was feeling sorry for her and that she was very
- 37:52successfully making me feel sorry for her, but it's like,
- 37:54why do I, why am I spending 45 minutes a night feeling.
- 37:57Sorry for this woman who's traveling with the doctor but it
- 38:01was good drama. But what what's the best later
- 38:05in the hospital? Sorry, we should session.
- 38:06We were in the hospital for anybody who gives a shit.
- 38:10A 1000, that's just, it isn't this the same Hospital from
- 38:15another story? It is, isn't it?
- 38:17It's London, is. Yeah, this is this the same code
- 38:21on the Tosh walk down. Yeah, with the pig, yeah, the
- 38:25pig and everyone screamed, it was her from absolutely
- 38:27fabulous, and then it turned out, it was her from Torchwood
- 38:29and we didn't know it yet. And everybody's screaming, what
- 38:32it was him from one foot in the grave.
- 38:35Yeah, now was this before he was doing this is before Merlyn,
- 38:39isn't it? Merlin came around.
- 38:40Around after dr. Yeah, Merlin was one of the
- 38:42things that commissioned after dr.
- 38:43Hill. Yeah hair, was it like a long
- 38:49week? I like Berlin.
- 38:50Yeah, and he was he was Berlin's Mentor.
- 38:53Young Merlin's Mentor. Colin, what's his name?
- 38:56It was felt it was a nice thing. Is that no spiritual fairly
- 38:59throw away lots of time. Lots of lots of homoerotic
- 39:03promo. Erotic Merlin Arthur Oh, really
- 39:08thoughts. Actually you know what I think
- 39:18is the creepiest, be in this scene, it's not so much the bit
- 39:21where he the gas Mark emerges on his face is scary.
- 39:25It's the bit where he hits the bin and they all set up.
- 39:28That's a bit against me. I think I think it's been a
- 39:39technique. That's what I like doing, right?
- 39:42And, and you can't go wrong when you can't go wrong but doing
- 39:44right and do that on the Fantastic for a reason.
- 39:47Yeah, so I love that bit where that where that Constantine
- 39:50sister Marie your doctor because I've Had My Moments where your
- 39:55Christopher Eccleston accent. The line where he says, before
- 40:04this War, I was a father and a grandfather, and now I'm
- 40:07neither. But I think that's really
- 40:09economic way of telling his story.
- 40:12Yeah, I didn't think the people rip into it.
- 40:14I thought. Yeah, I did you just say that
- 40:21just now, literally, just It's a proper mystery, we're
- 40:28investigating a mystery and sort that actually, at the moment I
- 40:33think on first viewing, I was thinking, well, what has roses
- 40:37story got to do with this? It's that's what most people
- 40:43will find out, but they're very separated it on.
- 40:45And it, you know, it's very strange because usually I find
- 40:49with Star Trek when there's a technobabble ending, it's just
- 40:52the worst. Whereas here I found It very
- 40:55satisfying because there was a very moving character story in
- 40:59there as well. And the to see together.
- 41:03Yeah precise. It that the plot brings those
- 41:06two points together at exactly the right time.
- 41:11Yeah. It's very impressed.
- 41:12Yeah. And it doesn't feel like a hand
- 41:15of God. Over the all set up.
- 41:19Do you hear what he said? They're not dead.
- 41:22He's got a very particular way of saying dialogues.
- 41:25Richard Wilson. I'm still pondering your
- 41:28question for about who I would been thinking to be the doctor.
- 41:31This point I've got to stop thinking it because outcomes,
- 41:33it's distracting. That's all think the tween
- 41:36episodes and you can let us know if it's okay, is it?
- 41:39Good is a different question for you.
- 41:42This, this feels like this has the feeling of a classic Doctor
- 41:45Who story and in the literal sense as well as in the
- 41:50celebratory sense. By which, I mean it could have
- 41:53been an old series story and well it couldn't.
- 41:55Because it does all sorts of stuff Bill to didn't But
- 41:57nevertheless, it feels like you could drop a nut on Old doctor
- 42:00in this and it would still work. Whereas, some new stories are
- 42:03two different and wouldn't work, which old doctor would you drop
- 42:07into this? If you were doing that, if
- 42:09you're all gonna be a bit obvious from Boca know, I put
- 42:14McCoy in this. okay, okay, I always remember when people say
- 42:19McLaren 26, the spoons, A long discussion
- 42:46about the bone cracking sound. Up to this moment.
- 42:54This is the most horrific thing that's ever been in Doctor, Who
- 42:57I think just and it's not even how its realized.
- 43:00It almost looks a little bit comical at one moment where his
- 43:02eyes go more Mickey Mouse but the the eccleston's got tears in
- 43:08his eyes. I did.
- 43:10I know I think that's stopped him in a nutshell.
- 43:12You know, the the horrific thing that could is on the verge of
- 43:16being oh yeah, I'm not complaining.
- 43:17Yeah very Doctor Who And when she says an episode to you, it
- 43:22feels like something's forcing his way up your throat.
- 43:24Well that special effect. Absolutely showed that didn't
- 43:26it? The hmm and you get these are
- 43:29all the time now thinks that horrific like influx you know
- 43:33there's a bit with the guys have got giant snakes that picking
- 43:37them out of their mouths and everything because of the visit
- 43:39I video or whatever it was called.
- 43:41Well the trouble is you have to sort of up it every year like
- 43:44you have to try and best it Doctor Who Moffat You've done it
- 43:51once. More fit.
- 43:52That's it. You're not allowed to doing it.
- 43:53Doing it. Once is fine.
- 43:55Apparently there was a apparently.
- 43:58There was a cut line in the draft script after they say
- 44:01after she said Doctor Who he was supposed to say.
- 44:03I prefer a doctor who'd Star Trek when God maximum that was
- 44:11in a draft. It was that one was taken out.
- 44:18Oh, there's a Fantastic special effects in a minute, isn't it
- 44:21right with creepers. So Jesus, she's in the house and
- 44:24the kids going around saying, are you my mummy?
- 44:25You mummy. But the bit where the camera
- 44:28goes right in his face and you can see that behind in inside
- 44:31the goggles, there's nothing behind that.
- 44:33He is literally empty, it's really effective.
- 44:40But you know I feel like the Cliffhanger cuts at the wrong
- 44:43point we'll talk about Carmen. Oh yeah yeah because they you
- 44:48get all everyone's not going Mommy.
- 44:50Mommy Mommy Mommy it's quite funny actually rather being
- 44:56scary. All we do.
- 44:59I like an ambulance. So well so yes we've got.
- 45:02This is the first sort of showdown between the doctor and
- 45:04Jack and it's it's well yeah, I mean it's really good.
- 45:13I think, yeah, I love the doctor doctor skepticism and the doctor
- 45:21not being taken in by Jack's flash nurse, but also being
- 45:24clearly a bit jealous. It does, it drop here?
- 45:27That there is a con, isn't it? There?
- 45:29This is the point. Yeah, he says it's called Yang
- 45:31something tells me. I'm a comment.
- 45:33Yeah. It's so, is he from the 15 51st
- 45:41Century as Magnus Grill? I think that's the yeah, I think
- 45:44Moffat has said in some point because he says, in terms of
- 45:48ensuring doesn't eat a Time, agent would know.
- 45:50Yeah, they choose the time, Asian description very
- 45:53carefully. I will come to the Nano dreams
- 46:00again there. Yeah, I'm also guessing it.
- 46:03Although, nobody's mentioned is just a DNA, is being Rewritten.
- 46:05Yeah, the kids are all there and they keep talking about this on
- 46:09your first watch. Did you put it all together?
- 46:12No. And you are smart bloke, but
- 46:18they didn't remember thinking it certificate, talk about Spock
- 46:23and yet no nights and it was kind of a running joke.
- 46:24Least with me and my friends, that man is were behind
- 46:26Everything in Star Trek next Generation.
- 46:28It would kind of be like, get out, oh, no, space ships.
- 46:31Like the Enterprise has exploded again on lots of nanites have
- 46:33fixed it. How about Star Trek?
- 46:35If you watch P? But almost all of it up till
- 46:39Voyager. I got a splinter in one episode
- 46:43Evolution at the beginning of series 3.
- 47:05This is going to kill you. I really love is this is a
- 47:21cliffhanger. They could have pulled off in
- 47:22classic. Oh yeah, people approaching
- 47:27what's scary? He just lifts gonna die - and
- 47:30the music. So, I just put the sound a
- 47:32little bit. I know the listings can't hear
- 47:34it, but the music is so subdued for Marigold if this was
- 47:37America. If this was a couple of years
- 47:39later, the music would have been game.
- 47:42But instead of just letting the, it's letting his voice, oh, I
- 47:46forgot how much I loved. The this version of the theme as
- 47:51well with the original scream just pretty much left as is and
- 47:55then you get the second scream a few seconds.
- 47:57Then of course that would be having the continuity announcer.
- 48:01Will be telling us to stay tuned for a for a trailer.
- 48:05Do we get the trailers on the iPlayer?
- 48:06I'll be there at all. Yeah, me now.
- 48:08Oh yeah, I can see a couple of years and they changed.
- 48:19Like I said was rules was never about everyone's name being on
- 48:21screen for a set amount of time. They have to be smart about
- 48:24these next time Traders are, but when it was when it was a to
- 48:28Pulsar because if it's someone in Jeopardy, they couldn't show
- 48:31that person. Well, they didn't that, that's
- 48:33what they realized. Was that after the last one I
- 48:34throw you into London they got loads of complaints because it's
- 48:37because it cut the trailer was straight after the was before
- 48:41the credits or in or a few seconds into them.
- 48:45So and it immediately shows you that everyone was all right, and
- 48:47running around. I'm doing other stuff next week
- 48:50but I've showed that day that I use London to my to my niece,
- 48:54who was probably about about 12 at the time, something like
- 48:58that. And she was she could leave it
- 49:01like that, stop. They're all about to be counted
- 49:03and she's never seen a cliffhanger before.
- 49:05She'd never seen a program that ended with people about to be
- 49:08killed by monsters. And just said, what happens
- 49:10next? We're going to come back next
- 49:11week because that was just some out of out of fashion.
- 49:16How old was she? At the end of episode 1, I have
- 49:24a question for you, then I started with the question.
- 49:26I never questioned people and then I remember it's me.
- 49:28So I've got to think of an answer.
- 49:30Well, you haven't watched this for a long time.
- 49:33This was your first time doing it.
- 49:34You weren't sure how you were gonna feel about it.
- 49:36How did you feel about it? I'm loving it.
- 49:38Yeah. No, it's so watchable, it looks
- 49:40so good. It's not like, I thought it
- 49:42might seem garish or two in your face and it doesn't at all,
- 49:47although it is, of course, get it.
- 49:48Is not a re-creation of wartime London in a, in any sort of
- 49:52realistic gritty way but it's not trying to be, but it is,
- 49:56it's another spooky one and having at this point, the I
- 50:00remember the episode I love and I still did at the end of
- 50:02season. One unquiet, dead was my
- 50:04favorite episode of the year. I've got, I've got, I've gone
- 50:07back and maybe like some others more now, and I know it would be
- 50:09hard to choose now, but at the time that was like, Wow, they've
- 50:12done my perfect Doctor. Who episode?
- 50:14I don't know what can come next it, or at least within 45
- 50:18minutes. I would prefer to be 90 minutes
- 50:19and add some more twists but still but yeah, loving it
- 50:22without you I can't believe that Steven Moffat wrote a story set
- 50:28in the past as good as this. And also wrote let's kill Hitler
- 50:33discussion to have. Yeah because that thing of
- 50:35Doctor Who not doing the Nazis and even when we do the second
- 50:39world war and still here, there aren't any Nazis in this that
- 50:42there aren't any Nazis in curse of fenric, not be Because like
- 50:49dr. Who don't know?
- 50:50I'm not out of cowardice or anything, but simply because
- 50:52they know we can't if dr. So brilliant and we, the viewers
- 50:56are going to ask why doesn't, why doesn't he just kill Hitler?
- 50:58And so my first front ends it and then locks him in a cupboard
- 51:03for lolz your reaction to its funnier than the Joker.
- 51:11I laughed. I did laughing now.
- 51:13I did Hitler in the cupboard. Quite a few think funny line
- 51:19from Rory who is just an abused spouse but that's a whole other
- 51:24issue. Hang on, come on man.
- 51:27Would you know, I do I thought it was a very Savvy move doing
- 51:30this sort of picture postcards WWII that.
- 51:34Everybody would recognize all the clichés.
- 51:36So you could absolutely buy into this immediately, if he's the
- 51:40bombings, you know, your dad, it lasts The Barrage balloons.
- 51:44Yeah. And it's doing a it's doing and
- 51:46we stopped who doing a war movie, Movie The Brothers and
- 51:49really doctor explains the second world war to you in the
- 51:51same way that Doctor Who doing a mummy's movie or Doctor Who
- 51:54doing anything else that went, whatever was being ripped off
- 51:57that week. The just wanted for another
- 52:02comparison with this got it. Absolutely right.
- 52:05And that's victory of the Daleks which obviously goes back to the
- 52:09second world war and I feel like everything that this gets right
- 52:13that gets hot. Probably horribly wrong, it
- 52:17brings in genuine. Ian historical figures and
- 52:20mischaracterizes on so appalling lie.
- 52:23Yes. Yes awful.
