- 0:19Speaker 1: Modern Medicine by Sir William Osler, Chapter six, Rise of
- 0:25Speaker 1: preventive Medicine Tuberculosis in a population of about one million.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Seventeen hundred persons died of tuberculosis in this state in
- 0:35Speaker 1: the year nineteen eleven, a reduction in thirty years of
- 0:39Speaker 1: nearly fifty percent. A generation has changed completely our outlook
- 0:45Speaker 1: on one of the most terrible scourges of the race.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It is simply appalling to think of the ravages of
- 0:50Speaker 1: this disease in civilized communities. Before the discovery by Robert
- 0:56Speaker 1: Cook of the basilis, we were helpless and hopeless in
- 1:00Speaker 1: an oriental fatalism. We accepted with folded hands a state
- 1:03Speaker 1: of affairs which use and want had made bearable to day.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Look at the contrast, we are both helpful and hopeful,
- 1:12Speaker 1: knowing the cause of the disease, knowing how it is distributed,
- 1:16Speaker 1: better able to recognize the early symptoms better able to
- 1:20Speaker 1: cure a very considerable portion of all early cases. We
- 1:24Speaker 1: have gradually organized an enthusiastic campaign which is certain to
- 1:28Speaker 1: lead to victory. The figures I have quoted indicate how
- 1:32Speaker 1: progressively the mortality is falling. Only do not let us
- 1:37Speaker 1: be disappointed if this comparatively rapid fall is not steadily
- 1:41Speaker 1: maintained in the country at large. It is a long
- 1:44Speaker 1: fight against a strong enemy, and at the lowest estimate,
- 1:48Speaker 1: it will take several generations before tuberculosis is placed at last,
- 1:53Speaker 1: with leprosy and typhus among the vanquished diseases. Education Organization
- 1:59Speaker 1: cooper These are the weapons of our warfare. Into details
- 2:04Speaker 1: they need not enter. The work done by the National
- 2:07Speaker 1: Association under the strong guidance of its secretary, mister farrand
- 2:12Speaker 1: the pioneer studies of Trudeau and the optimism which he
- 2:15Speaker 1: has brought into the campaign. The splendid demonstration by the
- 2:19Speaker 1: New York Board of Health of what organization can do
- 2:23Speaker 1: have helped immensely in this world wide conflict. Some years ago,
- 2:27Speaker 1: in an address at Edinburgh, I spoke of the Triple
- 2:30Speaker 1: Gospel which man has published, of his soul, of his goods,
- 2:34Speaker 1: of his body. This third Gospel, the Gospel of His Body,
- 2:37Speaker 1: which brings man into relation with nature, has been a
- 2:41Speaker 1: true evangelion, the glad tidings of the final conquest of nature,
- 2:46Speaker 1: by which man has redeemed thousands of his fellow men
- 2:49Speaker 1: from sickness and from death. If, in the memorable phrase
- 2:52Speaker 1: of the Greek philosopher Producus, that which benefits human life
- 2:56Speaker 1: is God, we may see in this new Gospel a
- 3:00Speaker 1: link betwixt Us and the crowning race of those whom
- 3:03Speaker 1: eye to eye shall look on knowledge, and in whose
- 3:05Speaker 1: hand nature shall be an open book, an approach to
- 3:08Speaker 1: the glorious day, which shall we sing so gloriously. Happiness
- 3:13Speaker 1: and science don though late upon the earth, Peace cheers
- 3:16Speaker 1: the mind, Health renovates the frame. Disease and pleasure cease
- 3:21Speaker 1: to mingle here, Reason and passion cease to combat here,
- 3:25Speaker 1: whilst mine, unfettered o'er the earth extends its all subduing
- 3:29Speaker 1: energies and wields the scepter of a vast dominion there
- 3:33Speaker 1: damon of the world, Part two, end of section twenty seven.
