- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, good morning, everybody, Happy weekend. You're listening to the
- 0:04Speaker 1: Repical Light home improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore, and
- 0:08Speaker 1: today let's jump right in. I want to start the
- 0:11Speaker 1: show talking about the little things, right. You know, we've
- 0:14Speaker 1: all heard that phrase, it's the little things that make
- 0:17Speaker 1: all the difference, you know, like basically, when you don't
- 0:19Speaker 1: want to spend a lot of money on a big
- 0:21Speaker 1: gift for somebody, you tell them, hey, it's all about
- 0:23Speaker 1: the little things, right, It's the little things that really matter.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And then when people hear that, everybody just assumes that's true.
- 0:31Speaker 1: And even though you know, we really want to get
- 0:34Speaker 1: this big gift, we know we got the little things
- 0:38Speaker 1: and it's the little things that really matter, so we
- 0:40Speaker 1: feel good right now. When I was little, I always
- 0:43Speaker 1: thought that the whole little things that matter line, you know,
- 0:47Speaker 1: I thought that was kind of hokey. I didn't buy
- 0:50Speaker 1: it because I wanted the big things, you know, I
- 0:53Speaker 1: wanted nothing but the best. And I really thought mom
- 0:55Speaker 1: and Dad were just cheaping out on me, you know,
- 0:58Speaker 1: and just telling me, feeding me this line about the
- 1:00Speaker 1: little things and hoping to just get me to think,
- 1:04Speaker 1: you know, tricking me into thinking I really got something,
- 1:07Speaker 1: you know. It's the little things that matter. Danny. Well, anyway,
- 1:10Speaker 1: as I got older, I'm atured, you know, Believe it
- 1:13Speaker 1: or not. This is a matured version of what I
- 1:15Speaker 1: used to be, and I've come to see the truth
- 1:19Speaker 1: of it. It really is, for the most part, the
- 1:22Speaker 1: little things that make all the difference. Big things are
- 1:25Speaker 1: still pretty awesome sometimes, but the little things really can
- 1:30Speaker 1: surprise you. And one of my favorite examples of the
- 1:33Speaker 1: whole little things thing is this in my living room
- 1:38Speaker 1: is a ridiculous pillow that makes absolutely no sense in
- 1:41Speaker 1: the space. You know, picture this. The living room is
- 1:43Speaker 1: painted a goldish tan, absolutely beautiful, astonishing to look at.
- 1:47Speaker 1: The furniture is brown pleather, plether. It's not leather, and
- 1:52Speaker 1: it's not exactly plastic. It's kind of a finely crafted
- 1:55Speaker 1: amalgamation of those two materials, and this amalgamation the people
- 2:01Speaker 1: in the furniture industry refer to as plether. Anyway, I've
- 2:05Speaker 1: got tan walls, dark brown pleather furniture, and an antique
- 2:09Speaker 1: oak desk again dark brown, and so on. You get
- 2:11Speaker 1: the picture. And in the midst of all of that,
- 2:14Speaker 1: on one of those pleather chairs that I was telling
- 2:16Speaker 1: you about there sits this pink, you know, crazy pink,
- 2:19Speaker 1: bubblegum pink, shiny pink sequin pillow. It's a small pillow,
- 2:24Speaker 1: you know, maybe a foot square something like that, and
- 2:26Speaker 1: it sparkles like crazy in the light, absolutely crazy. It's hideous,
- 2:30Speaker 1: it's garish, it's jarring to look at. It's clearly cheaply made,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and it's one of my favorite presents of all time. See.
- 2:38Speaker 1: My daughter Maddie gave it to me. It was a
- 2:40Speaker 1: Christmas present a couple of years back, and it didn't
- 2:43Speaker 1: arrive in time, so I received it about two weeks late.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And Maddie spent all the time leading up to Christmas
- 2:50Speaker 1: and all the time leading up to the arrival of
- 2:52Speaker 1: the present really telling me and building up how amazing
- 2:56Speaker 1: this present was. She was so thrilled with it, and really,
- 3:00Speaker 1: despite my age, she got me all giddied up. I
- 3:03Speaker 1: was pumped. You know, presents are my thing. I love
- 3:06Speaker 1: giving them and I love getting them. And I got really,
- 3:09Speaker 1: really really excited. And of all the kids, Maddie had money,
- 3:14Speaker 1: she'd been working a fair amount at that point, and
- 3:17Speaker 1: she's a saver, so this gift could be really good,
- 3:21Speaker 1: really nice, really expensive, and so I was excited. I
- 3:24Speaker 1: was pumped. And then the present arrived and I came
- 3:27Speaker 1: home from work one day to find this little square
- 3:29Speaker 1: package waiting for me, you know, all wrapped up. Mattie's pumped,
- 3:33Speaker 1: she's excited. Everybody's gathered around something out of a movie,
- 3:36Speaker 1: is what it felt like. Well, I grabbed the box.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I said, Maddie, you shouldn't have spent so much on me,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and I started opening the thing and that's when I
- 3:43Speaker 1: saw the Sequin pillow, you know, that horrible, pink, ridiculous
- 3:47Speaker 1: Sequin pillow. And I had no idea what in the
- 3:50Speaker 1: world was going on at this point, but I'm smart
- 3:52Speaker 1: enough to think on my feet, so I acted excited
- 3:55Speaker 1: and I laughed because Mattie was laughing, and I figured
- 3:57Speaker 1: this was some kind of joke that I didn't get yet.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And then Mattie said, brush the sequence, Brush the sequence,
- 4:04Speaker 1: and I must have looked completely stupid, because she reached
- 4:06Speaker 1: out and brushed at a corner of the sequence on
- 4:08Speaker 1: the pillow to show me how to do it. Well.
- 4:10Speaker 1: When she did that, I looked and I saw that
- 4:12Speaker 1: the sequence flipped back and they revealed another color underneath.
- 4:16Speaker 1: So still confused, I started brushing them back, and as
- 4:19Speaker 1: I did so, I revealed this life sized photo of
- 4:22Speaker 1: Mattie's face smiling with this ridiculous grin. It was the
- 4:26Speaker 1: funniest present that I've ever received, and now it sits
- 4:30Speaker 1: in a place of honor on my pleather chair. I've
- 4:33Speaker 1: been given many more expensive presents by Mattie over the years,
- 4:36Speaker 1: but that one present really hits me as the best,
- 4:38Speaker 1: the absolute best. So much humor and personality were wrapped
- 4:42Speaker 1: up in that one dumb little pillow. You know, the
- 4:44Speaker 1: little things. Often it's the little things that really count, right,
- 4:48Speaker 1: the things that really make a difference. And that brings
- 4:51Speaker 1: me to the paint point for the week. Often on
- 4:53Speaker 1: the show we talk about big projects and huge undertakings,
- 4:56Speaker 1: you know, whole house generators last week, painting your exterior,
- 5:00Speaker 1: you know, the exterior of your home, or installing courts, countertops,
- 5:03Speaker 1: painting kitchen cabinets, you know, big stuff, And of course
- 5:07Speaker 1: those big projects have big payoffs. But I wanted to
- 5:09Speaker 1: take a step back this week and point out that
- 5:11Speaker 1: there's a lot of power in little projects, you know,
- 5:14Speaker 1: in the little things. And I'm not saying that the
- 5:16Speaker 1: little things have more power than the big things. You know,
- 5:18Speaker 1: when it comes to home projects, I don't think that's
- 5:20Speaker 1: probably true. It's wishful thinking, but I don't think it's true.
- 5:24Speaker 1: The little things, though they are important, they're accessible, they're doable,
- 5:28Speaker 1: so much more so than big projects. And when you
- 5:31Speaker 1: realize that these little projects can have a big time impact,
- 5:34Speaker 1: where you begin to see that even on a time
- 5:35Speaker 1: crunch or a budget crunch, you can still make big
- 5:38Speaker 1: impact improvements to your home. And that's pretty exciting. Now,
- 5:41Speaker 1: many of us have big projects that we'd love to tackle,
- 5:44Speaker 1: but right now, you know, maybe they seem financially out
- 5:46Speaker 1: of reach for you. You know, with the holidays, approaching car payments,
- 5:49Speaker 1: the cost of groceries, unexpected expenses. You know, I just
- 5:53Speaker 1: put in a new furnace and air conditioner completely unexpected
- 5:56Speaker 1: with those things, with medical bills, it can really feel overwhelmed.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Not to mention the time constraints that we get from
- 6:03Speaker 1: work and family life. You know, big projects seem out
- 6:06Speaker 1: of reach sometimes. Now, if you relate to this, if
- 6:08Speaker 1: any of that makes sense to you, you're not in
- 6:10Speaker 1: your head even a little. There's good news, and really
- 6:12Speaker 1: that's what this show is all about, right is delivering
- 6:15Speaker 1: the good news. Well, in this instance, the good news
- 6:18Speaker 1: is that there are many little projects that you can
- 6:20Speaker 1: tackle that will have a huge impact on your home.
- 6:22Speaker 1: They're not going to drain your wallet or take weeks
- 6:24Speaker 1: to complete, and yet they can transform your space into
- 6:27Speaker 1: something that more closely resembles the vision that you had
- 6:30Speaker 1: for your home. Now, today's show is going to focus
- 6:33Speaker 1: on a bunch of these little projects, specifically within the bathroom,
- 6:37Speaker 1: you know, just to give me a space, a specific
- 6:39Speaker 1: space to work in. But many of these ideas are
- 6:42Speaker 1: going to apply really to any room of your home. Now.
- 6:44Speaker 1: You don't need to have huge amounts of money and
- 6:46Speaker 1: time to make big changes. We can update our homes
- 6:49Speaker 1: and make big impact improvements for chump change in sometimes
- 6:53Speaker 1: ten minutes of work. So remember sometimes the little things
- 6:56Speaker 1: can have a huge impact. That's the pain point for today.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Now we're going to take a break. When we return,
- 7:00Speaker 1: we're going to explore nine simple updates that can completely
- 7:03Speaker 1: transform your bathroom. Stick around and we're back. You're listening
- 7:11Speaker 1: to the Repco Light Home improvement showing. Today we're talking
- 7:14Speaker 1: about the little things, you know, the little projects, the
- 7:16Speaker 1: little updates that matter, and specifically we're looking at these
- 7:20Speaker 1: in terms of updating a bathroom. But like I said
- 7:23Speaker 1: in the last segment, you can apply these projects, many
- 7:26Speaker 1: of them, not all of them, certainly, not all of them,
- 7:28Speaker 1: but you can apply many of them all over the house.
- 7:31Speaker 1: All right, let's get started, and let's start here. What
- 7:34Speaker 1: does your bathroom look like? You know? Is it the
- 7:36Speaker 1: paradise on earth that you'd like it to be. Is
- 7:38Speaker 1: it a place of comfort and peace? Is it ready
- 7:40Speaker 1: for guests who are going to be coming soon as
- 7:42Speaker 1: the holidays draw closer? What's it look like now? When
- 7:45Speaker 1: I think about mine won't won't wall? Yikes? You know,
- 7:50Speaker 1: I've got two bathrooms and neither one is anything to
- 7:53Speaker 1: write home about. They're not exactly you know, pits of despair.
- 7:57Speaker 1: They're functional, They do their thing. I don't cry when
- 8:01Speaker 1: I'm in them, but they could certainly be better. You know,
- 8:04Speaker 1: I would certainly want to do a few things before
- 8:06Speaker 1: I had guests coming to use them on a regular basis.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Even now, when I do have the random guest that
- 8:13Speaker 1: shows up and they announce or ask do you have
- 8:17Speaker 1: a restroom? Well, nobody asks that. They all assume that
- 8:21Speaker 1: we've got a restroom in the house, They'll say, where's
- 8:23Speaker 1: the bathroom or whatever. I've got to use the bathroom,
- 8:25Speaker 1: And there's always this inner fear that somebody is going
- 8:29Speaker 1: to walk into the bathroom and judge me harshly because
- 8:33Speaker 1: it's not a place you want to spend a lot
- 8:36Speaker 1: of time. Anyway. That's my bathroom, you know, That's what
- 8:39Speaker 1: I've got going on. But here's the thing, you know.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I want to fix them, I want to change them.
- 8:44Speaker 1: But I personally don't have a lot of extra budget
- 8:47Speaker 1: right now for bathroommodels, and I certainly don't have a
- 8:50Speaker 1: lot of excess time. So what in the world can
- 8:53Speaker 1: I do? Well? Happily, there are a lot of simple
- 8:56Speaker 1: updates that will dramatically improve our bathrooms in an economical
- 8:59Speaker 1: manner and without requiring huge time commitments. And I hinted
- 9:04Speaker 1: at it earlier. But seriously, if you entertain guests for
- 9:07Speaker 1: Thanksgiving or Christmas, here's perhaps a startling fact for you.
- 9:11Speaker 1: We have, as of right now, thirty three days thirty
- 9:14Speaker 1: three days until Thanksgiving and sixty days until Christmas. So
- 9:19Speaker 1: if you've got a bathroom that's drooping a little bit,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and you've got guests coming over in the next few weeks,
- 9:24Speaker 1: or if you just want to make your bathroom nice
- 9:27Speaker 1: for you and your family, you know that's my boat.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Here are some ideas that might help you get there.
- 9:32Speaker 1: And let's just start. The very first update project that
- 9:35Speaker 1: I want to talk about is what a big surprise
- 9:38Speaker 1: this is going to be painting the walls. You know,
- 9:41Speaker 1: that's the big first project that we're going to talk about.
- 9:44Speaker 1: And maybe you might think of this one as a
- 9:46Speaker 1: bigger project, or maybe a project on the more expensive side,
- 9:50Speaker 1: but remember we're just talking about the bathroom here. It's
- 9:52Speaker 1: a small space. A gallon of paint is going to cover,
- 9:55Speaker 1: on average, about four hundred square foot with one coat,
- 9:59Speaker 1: so you're not looking at too much paint here. And
- 10:01Speaker 1: as for impact, there really isn't much bigger bang for
- 10:05Speaker 1: your buck when it comes to projects than painting. And
- 10:08Speaker 1: if you don't believe me, google it just right now.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Type in your phone search for the best bang for
- 10:13Speaker 1: your buck home improvement projects. And when you do that,
- 10:16Speaker 1: a new code of paint on the walls is going
- 10:19Speaker 1: to be in the top three almost every time. If
- 10:21Speaker 1: it's not the first one that's suggested, it's just you know,
- 10:25Speaker 1: economically speaking, you're going to get the best bang for
- 10:28Speaker 1: your buck with that kind of a project. And that's
- 10:29Speaker 1: because nothing you know really helps set the tone, I
- 10:33Speaker 1: guess is the way to say it, the tone or
- 10:35Speaker 1: the atmosphere of a room. Nothing sets that more than
- 10:38Speaker 1: the color on the walls. So one really straightforward project
- 10:41Speaker 1: with a big payoff is to freshen up the paint
- 10:43Speaker 1: in your bathroom. But I can't just leave it at
- 10:47Speaker 1: that and get to the other projects. It's a bathroom
- 10:50Speaker 1: and there are definitely some things to keep in mind
- 10:52Speaker 1: before I run on to the next thing. And first off,
- 10:56Speaker 1: when you're doing any painting, we talk about it on
- 10:58Speaker 1: the show all the time, but when you're doing any
- 11:00Speaker 1: painting at all, prep work is key. It's absolutely foundational.
- 11:05Speaker 1: But in a bathroom repaint, it's even more important to
- 11:09Speaker 1: make sure that you do this right. So make sure
- 11:11Speaker 1: that the walls are washed really well. There are a
- 11:14Speaker 1: lot of contaminants in a bathroom, hair spray, all kinds
- 11:17Speaker 1: of different things that can end up on the walls.
- 11:20Speaker 1: So wash the walls with a good cleaning agent like
- 11:22Speaker 1: Challenger or Spray nine. We carry both of those. You
- 11:25Speaker 1: could use don dish soap, but wash those walls really
- 11:28Speaker 1: well with that, and you might want to scrub them
- 11:31Speaker 1: slightly with a Scotch Bright pad, you know, one of
- 11:34Speaker 1: those little green pads, little green scrubbies that you use
- 11:38Speaker 1: for your dishes. If you're one of those people who
- 11:40Speaker 1: don't have a dishwasher, like the Hansen clan, we've got
- 11:44Speaker 1: little scrubbies that we use. Everybody's got their own personalized scrubby.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Get new scrubbies. Don't use your scrubbies that you use
- 11:51Speaker 1: for your dishes. Get a new Scotch Bright scrubby and
- 11:54Speaker 1: use that to wash the walls. It'll help cut through
- 11:56Speaker 1: some of those contaminants. So wash the walls really well
- 11:59Speaker 1: and then wipe them clean with a damp rag and
- 12:02Speaker 1: then let them dry. Now, if you've got nail holes
- 12:04Speaker 1: that need filling, do that now with a lightweight spackling compound.
- 12:08Speaker 1: And if the walls are shiny, you know it's a bathroom,
- 12:10Speaker 1: it's possible, in fact, it could be likely that there's
- 12:13Speaker 1: a fair amount of shine on those walls. If there is,
- 12:16Speaker 1: you really want to make sure that you do a
- 12:18Speaker 1: light scuff sanding with a one eighty grit sandpaper. You
- 12:21Speaker 1: need to create a surface profile. That's what you're looking
- 12:23Speaker 1: for here for that new paint to adhere to. So
- 12:26Speaker 1: do that stuff sanding, and once you're done with that,
- 12:28Speaker 1: wipe the walls with a damp rag to remove the
- 12:31Speaker 1: sanding dust and then let them dry. All right, if
- 12:34Speaker 1: you do happen to you know, in the course of
- 12:36Speaker 1: all of that work, it's not terribly uncommon that you
- 12:40Speaker 1: might stumble into mold or mildew. Now, if you do
- 12:42Speaker 1: find those things, you absolutely need to deal with those
- 12:45Speaker 1: clean those areas with bleach and water. You know, a
- 12:48Speaker 1: bleach and water solution, and that will kill the mold
- 12:51Speaker 1: and mildew and then you should be able to paint
- 12:53Speaker 1: over it. However, you do want to make sure that
- 12:56Speaker 1: there isn't a bigger problem going on that's causing those problems.
- 12:59Speaker 1: You know, it could be just poor ventilation, maybe not
- 13:02Speaker 1: using your fan, maybe your bathroom fan isn't working well.
- 13:04Speaker 1: You know, that could be leading to the issue. But
- 13:06Speaker 1: it could be something bigger than that. It could be
- 13:08Speaker 1: a leak or something along those lines. So make sure
- 13:11Speaker 1: that you know what caused the mold and mildew before
- 13:14Speaker 1: you completely move on, because if you don't fix that
- 13:17Speaker 1: core problem, it's just going to be a continuing problem
- 13:20Speaker 1: down the road. And you don't want to be dealing
- 13:22Speaker 1: with a mold problem in any regard in your home.
- 13:25Speaker 1: So if you do see mold, you definitely need to
- 13:28Speaker 1: figure that out. Mildew on the surface, most likely it's
- 13:30Speaker 1: a ventilation thing. Still clean it off, kill it with
- 13:33Speaker 1: the bleach and water solution. You'll be good to go.
- 13:36Speaker 1: If you have more questions about that, swing into any
- 13:39Speaker 1: Repcolite and we'll walk you through what you need to
- 13:41Speaker 1: do to get those walls ready for paint. All right,
- 13:43Speaker 1: once you've got all of that done and you're ready
- 13:45Speaker 1: for paint, i'd recommend using Aura Bath and Spa from
- 13:48Speaker 1: Benjamin Moore. It's specifically designed for moisture rich environments like
- 13:52Speaker 1: a bathroom, and as a bonus, at least to me,
- 13:55Speaker 1: it comes in a matte finish. You know, when you
- 13:57Speaker 1: use Aura Bath and Spy, you're going to get great coverage,
- 14:00Speaker 1: you're going to get supreme resistance to moisture and all
- 14:03Speaker 1: of the problems that moisture can cause. And you're going
- 14:06Speaker 1: to get all of that with a matte finish, which
- 14:09Speaker 1: means that your walls don't need to be overlay shining. Now,
- 14:11Speaker 1: some people like that other people. You know, that's a
- 14:15Speaker 1: real bummer for people when they get to painting their bathroom.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Before aur A Bath and Spa, before we had that
- 14:20Speaker 1: as an option, we always had to steer people to
- 14:22Speaker 1: shinier finishes because that will resist that moisture better. But
- 14:26Speaker 1: a lot of people didn't want to go to those
- 14:27Speaker 1: shinier finishes. They're a little trickier to work with. They
- 14:31Speaker 1: show more inconsistencies on the walls, more imperfections. A matte
- 14:35Speaker 1: finish is just softer on the eyes, You see the
- 14:37Speaker 1: color better and it hides those imperfections. So aur A
- 14:40Speaker 1: Bath and Spa you can use that. It's my favorite
- 14:42Speaker 1: bathroom paint. It's going to be a silver bullet. It's
- 14:45Speaker 1: going to resist all the problems that water can cause
- 14:49Speaker 1: in a bathroom, and it does it with a matte finish. Now,
- 14:52Speaker 1: if you don't want the matte finish, that's all right.
- 14:55Speaker 1: There are other options out there that have a shinier finish.
- 14:58Speaker 1: I know there are people who just like that shinier
- 15:00Speaker 1: look in the bathroom. We've got products that will do that.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Just stop out at any repco Light, tell us what
- 15:05Speaker 1: you want and we'll get you the right product. All right,
- 15:08Speaker 1: One last thing to say about all of this painting
- 15:11Speaker 1: the bathroom walls. One last thing is that color matters
- 15:14Speaker 1: a little more than you may think in the bathroom. Now,
- 15:17Speaker 1: it's not rocket science here, and to some people this
- 15:20Speaker 1: is crazy obvious. But you could pick a color in
- 15:22Speaker 1: the bathroom that looks great in your bathroom, but which
- 15:27Speaker 1: you know, often combined with your lighting, can make you
- 15:30Speaker 1: personally me can make us look terrible in the mirror,
- 15:36Speaker 1: no lie, Certain colors can make us look sickly or
- 15:39Speaker 1: washed out, or way worse than we really look in
- 15:43Speaker 1: real life. And some of us, some of us need
- 15:45Speaker 1: all the help we can get. The last thing we
- 15:47Speaker 1: need is the paint color on our bathroom walls working
- 15:51Speaker 1: against us. We need everything aligning in our favor to
- 15:54Speaker 1: be able to go out into the world and feel
- 15:56Speaker 1: okay about ourselves. We don't need the color hurting us.
- 15:59Speaker 1: So when it comes to picking your paint color, here
- 16:01Speaker 1: are just a few quick things to consider. And of
- 16:03Speaker 1: course these are for every space, but the bathroom being
- 16:06Speaker 1: a smaller space and a space in which we typically
- 16:09Speaker 1: view ourselves in a mirror. You know that all makes
- 16:12Speaker 1: these considerations a little more critical. All right. First, when
- 16:15Speaker 1: you're choosing your color, consider the lighting. If your bathroom
- 16:18Speaker 1: has a lot of natural light, you can choose a
- 16:20Speaker 1: boulder color. In low light bathrooms, you might want to
- 16:23Speaker 1: opt for lighter shades just to keep the space feeling
- 16:26Speaker 1: a little more bright. Next, be aware that warmer tones
- 16:29Speaker 1: like soft beiges, warm whites, light topes, even pinks, can
- 16:33Speaker 1: create a welcoming atmosphere without making you look washed out
- 16:36Speaker 1: in the mirror. One of Benjamin Moore's color Trend colors
- 16:39Speaker 1: for twenty twenty five is called tissue pink. Terrible name.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I hate that name, tissue pink. I don't want to
- 16:46Speaker 1: paint a wall tissue pink. Not at all, Not at all. No.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I was trying to think if there was a possibility
- 16:53Speaker 1: that I could. No, I hate that name. But it's
- 16:56Speaker 1: a decent color, and when it's paired with warm lighting,
- 16:59Speaker 1: it's great for a bathroom or a powder room, So
- 17:01Speaker 1: keep that in mind. Cooler tones, like icy blues or grays,
- 17:05Speaker 1: they can end up casting unflattering tones on our skin.
- 17:08Speaker 1: So can certain greens. And really that shouldn't come as
- 17:11Speaker 1: a surprise. You know, enough green in a small space
- 17:13Speaker 1: that's usually pretty well lit is going to end up
- 17:16Speaker 1: bouncing around the room, right, It's gonna cast us in
- 17:19Speaker 1: this green glow in the mirror, and it's possible, maybe likely,
- 17:23Speaker 1: that we're gonna end up looking seasick all the time
- 17:25Speaker 1: that we're in there. So you don't want that. If
- 17:27Speaker 1: you want to use cool tones, a soft shade of
- 17:30Speaker 1: blue could be a good compromise. So think about that.
- 17:33Speaker 1: If you're bound and determined that you're going to use
- 17:35Speaker 1: bold colors, even if you don't have great lighting in there,
- 17:37Speaker 1: bring those bold colors in with accents and with art.
- 17:40Speaker 1: You know that keeps them more controlled and easy to
- 17:43Speaker 1: tweak if you need to. Finally, last thing I'll say
- 17:46Speaker 1: about color is that you should try it out in
- 17:48Speaker 1: your lighting. We say that all the time, But try
- 17:51Speaker 1: the color out. Don't just buy it and put it
- 17:53Speaker 1: on and hope for the best sample it. Make sure
- 17:55Speaker 1: that you're seeing it in your lighting. You can get
- 17:57Speaker 1: Benjamin More color samples of any of the Benjamin More colors.
- 18:01Speaker 1: They're about six bucks, and that's going to give you
- 18:03Speaker 1: enough paint to brush on a piece of foam board
- 18:06Speaker 1: and then look at it at different times of the
- 18:08Speaker 1: day in your space. It's a great way to go.
- 18:10Speaker 1: And right now, I want to make sure I mentioned
- 18:12Speaker 1: this right now, until the end of October, you can
- 18:14Speaker 1: get a free Benjamin More color sample of any one
- 18:18Speaker 1: of the ten Color Trends twenty twenty five colors at
- 18:21Speaker 1: repco Light. Now. That includes Benjamin Moore's Color of the
- 18:23Speaker 1: Year cinnamon slate, and it also includes that tissue pink
- 18:27Speaker 1: color that I don't like the name of, but the colors,
- 18:30Speaker 1: all right, if you want to get a sample of
- 18:32Speaker 1: that for free, you can do that now. That free
- 18:35Speaker 1: color sample offers only good for one of those ten
- 18:37Speaker 1: Color Trends colors, and it ends October thirty one, so
- 18:40Speaker 1: check that out. We've got more info at repco light
- 18:43Speaker 1: dot com if you want more information on that. All right,
- 18:46Speaker 1: that's my long winded first recommended project to update your bathroom.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Let's take a quick break and then we'll keep going
- 18:52Speaker 1: with the rest of these on the other side. Stick around.
- 19:00Speaker 1: We're back. You're listening to the Repcolite Home Improvement Show,
- 19:03Speaker 1: and we're working our way to what I feel is
- 19:06Speaker 1: a list of small, reasonable updates that we can make
- 19:09Speaker 1: to our bathrooms. You know, these are meant to be
- 19:11Speaker 1: relatively relatively little things that shouldn't cost too much money
- 19:16Speaker 1: or take too much time, but which can still you know,
- 19:19Speaker 1: have a big impact on the space. In the last segment,
- 19:22Speaker 1: I spent a fair amount of time talking about painting
- 19:25Speaker 1: the walls. The rest of these aren't going to take
- 19:27Speaker 1: that much time, I promised, but there was a ton
- 19:29Speaker 1: of info that I wanted to cover before I felt
- 19:32Speaker 1: comfortable dropping that topic, so I took the time. Now,
- 19:35Speaker 1: if you still have questions about a bathroom repaint, just
- 19:38Speaker 1: swing into any Repcolite location and we'll walk you through it.
- 19:42Speaker 1: All right, let's move on. The second bathroom project that
- 19:46Speaker 1: I'm going to recommend is and I feel really bad
- 19:50Speaker 1: about this one. I do, I do, I really do.
- 19:53Speaker 1: But the second one is paint the cabinets, which is
- 19:56Speaker 1: different from the first one, which was painting the walls.
- 20:00Speaker 1: But yes, it is still more painting. But hang with
- 20:02Speaker 1: me here. It can make a huge impact. And even
- 20:06Speaker 1: though you're painting cabinets, which you know, a lot of
- 20:08Speaker 1: us it's not our favorite thing to think about. You know,
- 20:12Speaker 1: you're painting cabinets here, but remember it's bathroom cabinets, and
- 20:15Speaker 1: there aren't nearly as many of them as there are
- 20:18Speaker 1: in a kitchen. It's a great way to dabble with
- 20:20Speaker 1: a cabinet repaint and see if that's something you want
- 20:23Speaker 1: to tackle on a bigger scale in your kitchen. All right,
- 20:26Speaker 1: So bathroom cabinets, I think that's a great one. And
- 20:30Speaker 1: of course, just like the walls, prep is crazy important
- 20:33Speaker 1: here and I will spare you the details of all
- 20:36Speaker 1: of that. If you are interested in this project, just
- 20:39Speaker 1: stop out at any Repcolite location and we'll walk you
- 20:42Speaker 1: through it. Or you can email me at radio at
- 20:44Speaker 1: repco Light dot com and I can give you a
- 20:47Speaker 1: detailed walkthrough so you know exactly what you need to do. Now.
- 20:50Speaker 1: When it comes to recommended paint products for a bathroom
- 20:53Speaker 1: cabinet project, I'd recommend Benjamin Moore's Advance. It's absolutely ideal.
- 20:57Speaker 1: It self levels beautifully whether you brush it or roll it,
- 21:00Speaker 1: and you're gonna end up with a remarkably smooth finish.
- 21:03Speaker 1: It's almost almost gonna look sprayed. It cleans up with
- 21:06Speaker 1: soap and water. But it's actually what's called a modified alkid,
- 21:10Speaker 1: and that's just a fancy way of saying that it
- 21:12Speaker 1: has some of the durability characteristics of an oil and
- 21:15Speaker 1: some of the application characteristics of an oil, but with
- 21:18Speaker 1: faster dry times and soap and water cleanup like a
- 21:20Speaker 1: water based product would. So that's advanced from Benjamin Moore.
- 21:24Speaker 1: That's a great product for cabinets. Another option for cabinets
- 21:28Speaker 1: would be Repcolite's Optima, a water based product hold up
- 21:31Speaker 1: really well on your cabinets and a great price point. Again,
- 21:33Speaker 1: before you jump in, stop out at any Repcolite for
- 21:36Speaker 1: a breakdown on the steps, or send me an email
- 21:38Speaker 1: and I'll get you a step by step guide radio
- 21:41Speaker 1: at repcolite dot com. All right, moving on third little
- 21:45Speaker 1: project and we're going to finally break out of the
- 21:47Speaker 1: paint world here upgrading your bathroom fan. It's another game
- 21:52Speaker 1: changer for your bathroom. And it sounds boring as can be.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I get that, but it's a big deal. You know,
- 21:57Speaker 1: a quieter fan that effectively removes moisture can make a
- 22:01Speaker 1: world of difference in your bathroom. And if you want
- 22:04Speaker 1: to figure out the right size fan for your space,
- 22:07Speaker 1: it's really simple. It's a simple formula and it's based
- 22:10Speaker 1: on the room square footage. Basically, you need to get
- 22:13Speaker 1: a fan that has a CFM rating, which stands for
- 22:15Speaker 1: cubic feet per minute. That's how they're rated. Get a
- 22:18Speaker 1: fan that has a CFM rating that's equal to the
- 22:21Speaker 1: square footage of your room. So if you've got an
- 22:23Speaker 1: eighty square foot bathroom, you're gonna need a fan rated
- 22:26Speaker 1: for eighty cfm, all right, So really easy. Make sure
- 22:29Speaker 1: you get the right size fan, get that installed, and
- 22:32Speaker 1: for a lot of you probably you know, installing a
- 22:34Speaker 1: new ceiling fan is a simple project. You know, others
- 22:37Speaker 1: may need to get an electrician out there, and if
- 22:40Speaker 1: that's the case, that definitely does make the project a
- 22:42Speaker 1: little bigger. But like I said, it's still a great
- 22:46Speaker 1: update for a bathroom. It's not fancy, it's not visual
- 22:49Speaker 1: like new colors on your walls or your cabinets. But man,
- 22:52Speaker 1: let me tell you when a guest walks into my bathroom,
- 22:55Speaker 1: one of the fans. I've got two bathrooms, one of
- 22:58Speaker 1: the fans is so loud. It's startling at first, and
- 23:01Speaker 1: then eventually you just start to feel it buzzing, you know,
- 23:05Speaker 1: deep down in your chest and brain, and it kind
- 23:08Speaker 1: of lulls you into this state of disconnection. It's very strange.
- 23:12Speaker 1: We can feel it through the whole house. The whole
- 23:14Speaker 1: house reverberates when the fans on. It's strange, it's powerful,
- 23:18Speaker 1: it's not very nice, all right, that's one bathroom. The
- 23:21Speaker 1: other bathroom, fan, man, that one's sneaky. It's more diabolical.
- 23:26Speaker 1: It's perfectly quiet about sixty percent of the time, and
- 23:30Speaker 1: about thirty five percent of the time it makes kind
- 23:32Speaker 1: of a slight humming sound, you know, barely audible. So
- 23:36Speaker 1: that's ninety five percent of the time it's clicking along
- 23:38Speaker 1: just fine. And then there's that remaining five percent, and
- 23:42Speaker 1: in that time it screams like a banshee. And let
- 23:45Speaker 1: me tell you, it never builds to the scream. The
- 23:49Speaker 1: scream just starts, you know, full throated scream, out of
- 23:52Speaker 1: the blue, and it's going to change your world. When
- 23:55Speaker 1: it happens. It is so embarrassing. When guests are over
- 23:58Speaker 1: and that happens, it's terrifying. And when it happens to us,
- 24:01Speaker 1: you know, you're just sitting there, calm, you're at peace,
- 24:04Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, you know, the fury
- 24:07Speaker 1: of what sounds like a thousand deceased souls is screaming
- 24:11Speaker 1: at you from just overhead. And all I can say is,
- 24:14Speaker 1: when that happens, you're usually sitting in the right spot,
- 24:18Speaker 1: if you know what I'm saying. Anyway, blah blah blah.
- 24:20Speaker 1: The point is a bathroom fan is a great thing.
- 24:23Speaker 1: It's not flashy, but a quiet fan gets used more often,
- 24:27Speaker 1: which is really good. And a good fan is going
- 24:29Speaker 1: to move moisture regularly out of your bathroom and that's
- 24:31Speaker 1: going to prevent or at least hamper the growth of
- 24:33Speaker 1: mold or mildew and all of those things. It's going
- 24:36Speaker 1: to keep your paint looking better longer. So a good
- 24:38Speaker 1: bathroom fan, go for it. Fourth update, Add some fun wallpaper.
- 24:44Speaker 1: And this one's a little surprising. It can absolutely be done,
- 24:47Speaker 1: but you do need to do it right. You know
- 24:49Speaker 1: a lot of people think you can't do wallpaper in
- 24:51Speaker 1: a bathroom. You can, but you do need to do
- 24:53Speaker 1: it right. And you've got to be aware that some
- 24:55Speaker 1: papers are going to be better, you know, better suited
- 24:58Speaker 1: for these spaces than others. For example, there are vinyl
- 25:00Speaker 1: wallpapers that are water resistant. Those would be ideal, but
- 25:03Speaker 1: other papers can work. Really a lot depends on your situation.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Make sure you install the paper the right way, keep
- 25:10Speaker 1: it away from the area above the shower, use a
- 25:12Speaker 1: wall sizer or appropriate primer. Make sure that you have
- 25:15Speaker 1: a bathroom fan installed and that you run it. You know, again,
- 25:19Speaker 1: like we just talked about, make sure that bathroom fan's there,
- 25:21Speaker 1: make sure you're running it, and all of those things.
- 25:24Speaker 1: If you do those, you definitely can have success with
- 25:27Speaker 1: paper in the bathroom. And I know it can be
- 25:29Speaker 1: done because I had it on my bathroom walls for years,
- 25:31Speaker 1: about twenty years ago or more, probably probably more than.
- 25:35Speaker 1: That doesn't matter, that's the old person ramble got to stop.
- 25:38Speaker 1: That doesn't matter if the car was red or green. Grandma,
- 25:42Speaker 1: it hit you, you know, let's not worry about the color
- 25:44Speaker 1: of the car. Anyway. I just did that and exposed
- 25:47Speaker 1: my age. Anyway, about twenty years or more ago, we
- 25:50Speaker 1: had the paper installed on the upper third of the
- 25:52Speaker 1: bathroom walls. The rest of the space the walls were speedboard,
- 25:57Speaker 1: all right. Paper didn't go around, you know, the area
- 26:00Speaker 1: above the tub surround. We didn't put it there. My
- 26:02Speaker 1: kids splashed a ton in the tub, and the bathroom
- 26:04Speaker 1: usually got pretty steamed up after showers. But with all
- 26:07Speaker 1: of that said, the paper lasted for years. In fact,
- 26:10Speaker 1: I never had peeling problems at all. Now that's not
- 26:13Speaker 1: always going to be the case, and certain papers just
- 26:16Speaker 1: won't hold up well in damp environments. But it is
- 26:19Speaker 1: possible to bring paper in, especially if you just use
- 26:22Speaker 1: it on a single accent wall. Now, wallpaper can instantly
- 26:26Speaker 1: take a space to another level. And if you hate
- 26:29Speaker 1: the very idea of wallpaper, because I know a lot
- 26:31Speaker 1: of people do, if that's you, if you're one of
- 26:33Speaker 1: those people hating the idea of wallpaper, I'm betting I
- 26:37Speaker 1: can't be sure, but I'm betting that you haven't looked
- 26:40Speaker 1: at many patterns recently. There are so many options out there,
- 26:44Speaker 1: covering so many different design styles. It's really crazy. You know.
- 26:47Speaker 1: You can flip through books at some of our stores
- 26:49Speaker 1: and you see patterns that you can't believe. The color
- 26:52Speaker 1: combinations are great, the visuals are great. These are pieces
- 26:55Speaker 1: that can completely change a room, and that idea fits
- 26:58Speaker 1: really nicely into this small changes, little updates concept that
- 27:02Speaker 1: we're focusing on. It's not going to take much paper
- 27:04Speaker 1: in a bathroom to make a huge difference. So if
- 27:07Speaker 1: you're interested even a little in exploring paper options for
- 27:11Speaker 1: a bathroom, stop out at one of our stores with
- 27:14Speaker 1: a paper library and then just have that conversation, tell
- 27:17Speaker 1: us what you're working on, and we can direct you
- 27:19Speaker 1: to the right papers to consider and also walk you
- 27:22Speaker 1: through the correct installation techniques to make sure you get
- 27:24Speaker 1: the best results. Now, those Repcolite locations that have paper
- 27:29Speaker 1: are the Byron Center location, the broad Moore, Fulton Street
- 27:32Speaker 1: and Plainfield Avenue locations in Grand Rapids, Seventeenth Street and
- 27:36Speaker 1: Lakewood Boulevard in Holland, the Kalamazoo rep Coolite if you're
- 27:39Speaker 1: out there, that location has a library for wallpaper books.
- 27:43Speaker 1: And on the east side of the state, the Repcolite
- 27:45Speaker 1: locations in Birmingham, Farmington Hills and Gross Point all have wallpaper.
- 27:49Speaker 1: I've got all of that info at repco light dot com.
- 27:52Speaker 1: All you need to do is click the wallpaper banner
- 27:55Speaker 1: on the homepage and check it out. All right, so
- 27:57Speaker 1: wallpaper in a bathroom. What I want to do is
- 28:01Speaker 1: take a break at this point because I've got five
- 28:03Speaker 1: more that i want to get through. And yeah, I
- 28:06Speaker 1: think the best way to do that is to take
- 28:08Speaker 1: a break right now and pick this up on the
- 28:10Speaker 1: other side, stick around, and we're back at it. You're
- 28:18Speaker 1: listening to the ripcle Light home improvement show sponsored by
- 28:21Speaker 1: Benjamin Moore, and we're hitting the end of our episode
- 28:24Speaker 1: on the little things. You know, it's the little things
- 28:26Speaker 1: that matter, right. We spent the whole episode talking about that,
- 28:30Speaker 1: and as I mentioned earlier in the show, I completely
- 28:33Speaker 1: get it. You know, big home projects have a huge payoff.
- 28:37Speaker 1: There's no disputing that at all. All I'm saying is
- 28:40Speaker 1: that little projects, little updates, they can have a surprisingly
- 28:43Speaker 1: powerful impact as well. And that's what we've been focused
- 28:46Speaker 1: on today, little projects that make a difference. And I
- 28:49Speaker 1: basically dialed in on the bathroom partly because it gave
- 28:52Speaker 1: me a specific room, you know, to talk about, and
- 28:55Speaker 1: that makes the conversation flow just a little bit better,
- 28:58Speaker 1: but also partly because a bathroom is the perfect room
- 29:01Speaker 1: to look at when you're talking about little updates. And
- 29:04Speaker 1: really it's because it's generally one of the littler rooms
- 29:06Speaker 1: in our homes. It's a big impact space, but it's
- 29:10Speaker 1: small enough that a few changes can really start to
- 29:13Speaker 1: push that space in completely new directions. And I guess
- 29:16Speaker 1: one other reason I talked about bathrooms, or picked bathrooms,
- 29:19Speaker 1: is because I really don't know many people who don't
- 29:22Speaker 1: want to change something in their bathroom, you know, very
- 29:24Speaker 1: few people that I've run into have created the perfect
- 29:27Speaker 1: oasis there. You know, pretty much any help, any ideas
- 29:30Speaker 1: are usually welcome when it comes to bathrooms in small spaces.
- 29:34Speaker 1: So anyway, that's what I picked. We've covered the first
- 29:37Speaker 1: five simple updates that I had on my list. I've
- 29:39Speaker 1: got five to go. Let's get right back to it.
- 29:42Speaker 1: And my fifth idea is this, replace the shower head.
- 29:47Speaker 1: It's usually again I said these were easy. I didn't
- 29:50Speaker 1: say these were you know, the work of rocket scientists.
- 29:54Speaker 1: This is easy stuff. Replace the shower head. It's usually
- 29:57Speaker 1: as easy as unscrewing the old one in screwing on
- 30:00Speaker 1: a new one. Sometimes you need plumber's tape, sometimes you don't.
- 30:05Speaker 1: It depends on the shower head that you purchase. So
- 30:08Speaker 1: read the little instruction packet for installation. But crazy easy.
- 30:12Speaker 1: You barely need tools for it, and it can make
- 30:14Speaker 1: a big difference. You know, we did this at our
- 30:16Speaker 1: house and it's really maybe it's pathetic. You know, I
- 30:20Speaker 1: like to use the word amazing, but it might just
- 30:23Speaker 1: be pathetic. What a difference it made, you know. We
- 30:25Speaker 1: went from a little, standard, boring, mineral deposit encrusted shower
- 30:30Speaker 1: head to a much bigger one with options. You know,
- 30:34Speaker 1: you could click it and it would do different things.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Everybody in the house felt like we were showering in
- 30:39Speaker 1: the writs for a while. You know, the writs. If
- 30:41Speaker 1: that's still a fancy place to go to hang out
- 30:45Speaker 1: to shower, I don't know. That's what it felt like
- 30:47Speaker 1: at our house. Felt like the Ritz all for the
- 30:49Speaker 1: price of a twenty dollars shower head and a five
- 30:52Speaker 1: minute switch aerou So think about that, but don't stop there,
- 30:56Speaker 1: you know, look at other things that you can swap
- 30:58Speaker 1: out as well, shower hook and rings, towel racks, even
- 31:02Speaker 1: the toilet paper holder. Don't forget about drawer pulls and
- 31:05Speaker 1: cabinet knobs. You know, these little details can really elevate
- 31:08Speaker 1: your bathroom's look. And while hardware for cabinets is usually
- 31:13Speaker 1: you know, really expensive, again, in this instance, you're just
- 31:16Speaker 1: doing a bathroom. It's a small space. You won't need
- 31:19Speaker 1: that much and you'll be surprised, really surprised at the
- 31:22Speaker 1: difference new hardware makes, especially if you choose to paint
- 31:26Speaker 1: your cabinets. But even if you don't, new hardware almost
- 31:30Speaker 1: is magical. That sounds really corny. It's got a superpower.
- 31:36Speaker 1: That's the way I'd like to say it. It's got
- 31:37Speaker 1: a superpower of making the cabinets themselves look new. Did
- 31:41Speaker 1: this at my old house and I was blown away.
- 31:44Speaker 1: My little brass knobs that we had that had I
- 31:47Speaker 1: don't know, some little ceramic piece in the middle that
- 31:50Speaker 1: had a little blue flower painted on it, you know,
- 31:52Speaker 1: pretty old school stuff. We swapped them out for a
- 31:55Speaker 1: burnished bronze at that point, and man, did everything look different.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Cabinets looked really, they looked new in a sense. So
- 32:05Speaker 1: if you're painting the cabinets, if you're not painting the cabinets,
- 32:08Speaker 1: think about swapping out that hardware. Maybe that could make
- 32:11Speaker 1: a big difference for very little money. All right, let's
- 32:14Speaker 1: keep going. Another project a little on the larger side,
- 32:17Speaker 1: is this one. Consider adding bad board or Wayne's coating.
- 32:20Speaker 1: You know, it's a classic touch, can add character to
- 32:23Speaker 1: the space. If you're thinking about doing that, when you're
- 32:25Speaker 1: deciding on the height, you know, that's really the main
- 32:28Speaker 1: question with badboard or wains coating, deciding on the height.
- 32:32Speaker 1: When you're doing that, think about the proportions of your room.
- 32:34Speaker 1: For a smaller bathroom, you're probably going to want to
- 32:36Speaker 1: keep that Waine's coating around the thirty eight to forty
- 32:39Speaker 1: two inch height, So keep it right around that zone.
- 32:42Speaker 1: This is roughly going to be about a third of
- 32:44Speaker 1: the wall height, and it's pretty standard. That's usually the
- 32:47Speaker 1: way to go. If the bathroom's a little bit bigger,
- 32:49Speaker 1: you know, if it's on the larger side, you could
- 32:51Speaker 1: possibly go up to the forty eight inch height, but
- 32:53Speaker 1: typically it's not recommended that you're going to go much
- 32:56Speaker 1: higher than that in a bathroom setting. So Wain's coating
- 33:00Speaker 1: board on the walls. For materials, there are moisture resistant
- 33:03Speaker 1: options out there that you can look at. Wood that's
- 33:06Speaker 1: properly painted also is going to work really well. So
- 33:08Speaker 1: if you're on the handy side and you're comfortable with
- 33:11Speaker 1: a project like that, something to think about. Another one
- 33:15Speaker 1: moving quickly light fixtures another really easy update. For some people,
- 33:19Speaker 1: it's going to be easier than others. You know, you
- 33:21Speaker 1: might need again, maybe you've got to get an electrician
- 33:23Speaker 1: out there to make that swap. For a lot of people,
- 33:26Speaker 1: that's something they'll tackle. Do it carefully, you know. I
- 33:29Speaker 1: don't give out any advice on on electrical stuff on
- 33:32Speaker 1: the radio. It's not my gig. I have an electrician
- 33:35Speaker 1: sun that I bring in to do all of my work.
- 33:37Speaker 1: But I do know, regardless of how you get that
- 33:40Speaker 1: put up there, new lighting can really brighten up haha,
- 33:44Speaker 1: brighten up the space. It's really going to change things,
- 33:46Speaker 1: and it's going to enhance the overall feel. You know.
- 33:49Speaker 1: I've got to do that with mine. The light fixture
- 33:52Speaker 1: that I've got in there. Mm mmm. The eighties called
- 33:56Speaker 1: and turns out it wants my light fixture back, and
- 33:59Speaker 1: I've got to take care of that. I'm not going
- 34:01Speaker 1: to wait around till it becomes popular again. That things
- 34:04Speaker 1: got to go. So that's on my list, and I,
- 34:06Speaker 1: like I said, I've got that electrician kid who can
- 34:09Speaker 1: take care of it for me. All right. So there's
- 34:11Speaker 1: another one, a new shower curtain. Easy stuff here. Again,
- 34:15Speaker 1: it's not rocket science, but a new shower curtain is
- 34:19Speaker 1: crazy quick, it's really affordable, and it's going to refresh
- 34:22Speaker 1: the whole bathroom style perhaps. I mean, it depends on
- 34:25Speaker 1: what you go with, but there's a lot of power
- 34:28Speaker 1: with something like that because there's a lot of surface
- 34:30Speaker 1: area that it covers. So look into a new shower curtain,
- 34:33Speaker 1: you know, I saw one not too long ago that
- 34:35Speaker 1: I think was Jeff Goldbloom, you know, just a great, big,
- 34:39Speaker 1: enormous Jeff Goldbloom. And I don't know that I need
- 34:42Speaker 1: that in my bathroom. But there's a lot of things
- 34:45Speaker 1: you could pull off with a shower curtain, So think
- 34:48Speaker 1: about that. That would be an easy one. How about
- 34:50Speaker 1: this one? Not quite as easy, but talk about a difference.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Change the toilet now. I said all along that a
- 34:57Speaker 1: lot of these could be used in other rooms. This
- 35:01Speaker 1: is the one that I can't imagine can be used
- 35:04Speaker 1: in another space other than a bathroom, you know, even
- 35:06Speaker 1: the shower curtain. I believe I'm thinking of somebody right now.
- 35:11Speaker 1: I'm not going to say his name, but my daughter's fiance.
- 35:15Speaker 1: He's got a new house and he's got I think
- 35:19Speaker 1: he's the one with the Jeff Goldbloom shower curtain, and
- 35:21Speaker 1: he's got it hanging in his basement as wal Art.
- 35:24Speaker 1: So you could even use the shower curtain somewhere else
- 35:27Speaker 1: if you're really crazy and you really want to push boundaries.
- 35:30Speaker 1: The toilet. I don't want to go anywhere that's got
- 35:32Speaker 1: a toilet in the living room. I don't think. Boy,
- 35:35Speaker 1: I don't know I might want to think about that.
- 35:37Speaker 1: I can't think so. I can't think so. I think
- 35:40Speaker 1: that really needs to be in the bathroom. So anyway,
- 35:43Speaker 1: change the toilet. That's my greater point here. I know
- 35:46Speaker 1: it does sound like a big job, you know, it's
- 35:48Speaker 1: not not just like hanging a picture on the wall.
- 35:50Speaker 1: But it is a manageable, you know, DIY project. And
- 35:54Speaker 1: most of us know somebody who's tackled this particular project before.
- 35:58Speaker 1: And maybe, if you're really nice, you offer them a
- 36:01Speaker 1: beverage of some sort, maybe a donut, maybe they'd be
- 36:04Speaker 1: willing to come over and help you do yours. If not,
- 36:08Speaker 1: watch some videos online and just check it out, see
- 36:10Speaker 1: if it's something you feel comfortable doing. If not, hiring
- 36:13Speaker 1: a pro that's always an option. But regardless, however, you
- 36:17Speaker 1: get that in a new toilet is a big change
- 36:20Speaker 1: for a bathroom. You know, we replaced ours a few
- 36:23Speaker 1: years back, switching from short, old fashioned toilets to larger,
- 36:27Speaker 1: modern ones. It's so much more comfortable, though, I joke
- 36:32Speaker 1: now that my legs swing, you know, when I sit there,
- 36:34Speaker 1: my little legs don't touch, my feet don't touch the floor.
- 36:37Speaker 1: My legs never touch the floor. They shouldn't touch the floor.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Feet need to touch the floor, not legs. But my
- 36:42Speaker 1: feet don't touch the floor anymore. They swing around, but
- 36:44Speaker 1: that's okay. The flushing power on the toilet crazy impressive.
- 36:49Speaker 1: I mean, I could theoretically flush a range bucket of
- 36:52Speaker 1: golf balls if I wanted to. Not that I ever would.
- 36:55Speaker 1: I can't imagine a scenario where that would be required
- 36:59Speaker 1: or even desire, but I could if I wanted to.
- 37:02Speaker 1: And that alone that makes me happy. You know, this update,
- 37:05Speaker 1: that toilet update to my bathroom dramatically improve both the
- 37:09Speaker 1: function and the esthetics of our space. It's one of
- 37:12Speaker 1: my favorite things that I've done, and it didn't really
- 37:15Speaker 1: take me too long, and it wasn't too over the
- 37:18Speaker 1: top expensive. I mean, toilets aren't free, but still the
- 37:21Speaker 1: amount of impact that you get from it, the change
- 37:23Speaker 1: from it definitely something to think about. All right. Last one,
- 37:27Speaker 1: last bathroom update idea, and this one's a little bit controversial.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Hang some art in the bathroom. And it's controversial really
- 37:35Speaker 1: for the same reasons that the wallpaper suggestion raises eyebrows.
- 37:38Speaker 1: You know, bathrooms are full of heat and humidity, and
- 37:41Speaker 1: those things aren't typically great for wallpaper or for art,
- 37:44Speaker 1: a lot can go wrong and you run the risk
- 37:46Speaker 1: of damaging the art that you hang up. But like wallpaper,
- 37:50Speaker 1: it can absolutely work if you do it right. You know,
- 37:53Speaker 1: use the right materials, the right art, the right frames
- 37:56Speaker 1: and so on. Do that and it can work. Now,
- 37:58Speaker 1: next week I've got a full segment about everything that
- 38:02Speaker 1: you need to know to bring art into the bathroom
- 38:04Speaker 1: and have no problems, But I don't have time for
- 38:06Speaker 1: that this week. That's coming up next week. My greater
- 38:08Speaker 1: point here is to just throw out the idea that
- 38:11Speaker 1: the bathroom can be a canvas for more than just
- 38:14Speaker 1: the usual bathroom theme decor. You know, an unexpected art
- 38:17Speaker 1: piece in a bathroom that can really push the room
- 38:19Speaker 1: in a new direction. And like all of the other
- 38:22Speaker 1: updates that we talked about, it's crazy simple, crazy small.
- 38:25Speaker 1: It takes almost no time to hang something up, But
- 38:28Speaker 1: who knows that one little item you find and hang
- 38:30Speaker 1: up could completely revitalize that bathroom space and launch you
- 38:34Speaker 1: in an entirely new direction. Now, that was the point
- 38:37Speaker 1: of all of this today. If you're finding it tougher
- 38:40Speaker 1: to jump into the big projects, never forget the power
- 38:42Speaker 1: of the little stuff. And if any of your little
- 38:44Speaker 1: projects do involve paint, we'd absolutely love to help. Just
