- 0:00The standpoint of the witness consciousness separated from the
- 0:04external being is not something that is acquired through
- 0:08thinking or the exercise of willpower based in the mind.
- 0:13Many people have developed approaches or systems to not
- 0:17react to outer circumstances, such as Stoicism, various forms
- 0:22of training, disciplines, or attempts at acclimating oneself
- 0:27to particular forces and thereby increasing 1's capacity to
- 0:31resist their influence. These approaches may be useful
- 0:36in gaining some manner of overview or control over the
- 0:39actions and reactions of the external nature, but they do not
- 0:44actually provide the experience itself.
- 0:48People who have had an out of body experience report a sense
- 0:52that they can see the body. They can see others responding
- 0:55to the body, but they feel disassociated from the body and
- 1:00its activities. They can observe but do not have
- 1:04the sense of wanting to intervene in any way.
- 1:08This experience is akin to the separation of the witness from
- 1:11the nature and provides us an inkling about the experience
- 1:17itself. An individual reported an event
- 1:22that occurred to him at the time of the mothers Maha Samadhi in
- 1:251973. He was residing at the Shrioro
- 1:29Bindo Ashram. He notified the mother secretary
- 1:33of his birthday and he received the mother's birthday blessings
- 1:37on November 17th, 1973 in the morning, in other words, earlier
- 1:43in the same day as her leaving her body.
- 1:47The message he received said live within, be not shaken by
- 1:52outward happenings. He reported that he fell into a
- 1:56deep state of walking meditation, feeling separated
- 2:00and abstracted from everything occurring to him that day.
- 2:05That night as he slept, he had a dream that he recalled upon
- 2:09waking that everything had become intensely dark and
- 2:13foreboding, and then suddenly there was a brilliant light and
- 2:18the darkness was dispelled. He was working during that
- 2:23period in the fruit room, helping to hand out fruits to
- 2:26the sawdocks each morning, and this required him to reach the
- 2:30ashram building while it was still dark early in the morning.
- 2:34When he reached the ashram, he was surprised to see all the
- 2:38lights on and people milling about everywhere.
- 2:42Some people were grief stricken and crying.
- 2:45He learned that the mother had left her body.
- 2:49He indicated that he was still experiencing the almost trance
- 2:53like separation of his awareness that had begun the prior day and
- 2:58he had no reaction other than that this seemed like an outward
- 3:02happening and his dream experience told him an entirely
- 3:06different tale. Over the next several days, as
- 3:11people poured in from all around the world, he continued to feel
- 3:14the state of abstraction and separation as he became an
- 3:19observer of the event, as the mother's body was placed in the
- 3:24meditation hall for the darshan, as he participated in all the
- 3:28activities, and as the samadhi was prepared for the internment
- 3:33of the body. His report, that was that he
- 3:36would could carry on all the activities of his life, but felt
- 3:41totally separated, uninvolved and unaffected by all of them.
- 3:47He became a pure observer. This was not some mental idea,
- 3:54nor was it some discipline. Rather, he indicated that it was
- 3:59to him a grace, a gift he had been given by the mother, and he
- 4:04accepted it without question. He surrendered to the experience
- 4:09and simply observed his own internal responses and
- 4:13everything going on around him. While eventually the intense
- 4:18experience receded and his normal psychological standpoint
- 4:22reasserted itself, more or less, he kept the remembrance of the
- 4:26experience and recounted it as a modest extended period of a
- 4:33shift of standpoint to that of the witness consciousness.
- 4:37He later indicated he had been able to remain observant of his
- 4:42inner thoughts, feelings, perceptions and reactions to
- 4:48some degree since that time. While this is a first hand
- 4:53recounting of an experience, there are many such a similar
- 4:57experiences recounted in the spiritual literature.
- 5:01Individuals who have such an intense experience frequently
- 5:05find that some constant sense of separation and observation stays
- 5:10with them while the intensity recedes and the experience
- 5:15becomes normalized. Srioro Bindu observes quote the
- 5:22attitude of the witness consciousness within.
- 5:26I do not think it necessarily involves an external seclusion,
- 5:29though one may do. That also is a very necessary
- 5:34stage in the progress. It helps the liberation from the
- 5:38lower procrity, not getting involved in the ordinary nature
- 5:42movements. It helps the establishment of a
- 5:45perfect calm and peace within, for there is one part of the
- 5:50being which remains detached and sees without being disturbed the
- 5:55perturbations of the surface. It helps also the ascent into
- 6:00the higher consciousness and the descent of the higher
- 6:04consciousness, for it is through this calm, detached and
- 6:08liberated inner being that the ascent and descent can easily be
- 6:13done. Also to have the same witness
- 6:16look on the movements of procrity in others, seeing,
- 6:21understanding but not perturbed by them in any way, is a very
- 6:26great help towards both the liberation and the
- 6:30universalization of the being. As for the surrender, it is not
- 6:35inconsistent with the witness attitude.
- 6:38On the contrary, by liberating from the ordinary procrity, it
- 6:43makes easier to surrender to the higher or divine power.
- 6:48Very often, when this witness attitude has not been taken, but
- 6:52there is a successful calling in of the force to act in one, one
- 6:57of the first things the forces does is to establish the witness
- 7:01attitude so as to be able to act with less interference or in
- 7:05mixture from the movements of the lower property.
