- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean here. It is a Monday.
- 0:16It is the 7th of August. And I am delighted that you have
- 0:21invited me into your day so that we can read the Bible together
- 0:25and maybe we even get to do this every day this week together.
- 0:28Wouldn't that be something? Well, I'll be here.
- 0:31That's my commitment to you, if you'd like.
- 0:33Let's do it. So this week we continue to read
- 0:37through the book of Isaiah, and we are still in the section
- 0:40where Isaiah is pronouncing God's judgment over the nations.
- 0:45And this week we will hear that God is judging Damascus and
- 0:49Ethiopia and Egypt, and it is not pretty if you are those
- 0:54nations. But thankfully he is not talking
- 0:57about Tasmania, so I'm OK And this is a while ago, so I think
- 1:02you're all OK too, wherever you are.
- 1:05But something also to keep in mind is that this all happens in
- 1:09the context. I know we only get a chapter a
- 1:11day and then it kind of wraps up before we reach the end of the
- 1:14section. But this section is building to
- 1:17God talking about how even though he will have to judge
- 1:20these nations, there will be restoration.
- 1:24So this is all part of a father saying you have been naughty and
- 1:28this is what your punishment is before he gets to the end and
- 1:32says, but I love you and you're still going to live in my home.
- 1:35And we are going to spend our life together in relationship.
- 1:40But we're not going to hear that part today.
- 1:42We're just going to hear the doom and gloom.
- 1:43So you just got to stick with it.
- 1:46So that's probably enough. Let us read together.
- 1:50Isaiah, Chapter 17. This message came to me
- 2:04concerning Damascus. Look, the city of Damascus will
- 2:08disappear. It will become a heap of ruins.
- 2:12The towns of Aurora will be deserted.
- 2:15Flocks will graze in the streets and lie down undisturbed, with
- 2:19no one to chase them away. The fortified towns of Israel
- 2:23will also be destroyed and the royal power of Damascus will
- 2:28end. All that remains of Syria will
- 2:31share the fate of Israel's departed glory, declares the
- 2:35Lord of Heaven's armies. In that day, Israel's glory will
- 2:40grow dim. It's robust body will waste
- 2:43away. The whole land will look like a
- 2:46grain field. After the harvesters have
- 2:49gathered the grain. It will be desolate like the
- 2:52fields in the valley of Refaem. After the harvest, only a few of
- 2:58its people will be left, like stray olives left on a tree.
- 3:02After the harvest, only two or three remain in the highest
- 3:06branches, Four or five scattered here and there on the limbs,
- 3:11declares the Lord the God of Israel.
- 3:15Then at last, the people will look at their Creator and turn
- 3:19their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.
- 3:22They will no longer look to their idols for help or worship
- 3:25what their own hands have made. They will never again bow down
- 3:30to their Asherapoles or worship at the Pagan shrines they have
- 3:34built. Their largest cities will be
- 3:36like a deserted forest, like the land the Hivites and Amorites
- 3:41abandoned when the Israelites came here so long ago.
- 3:45It will be utterly desolate. Why?
- 3:49Because you have turned from the God who can save you.
- 3:52You have forgotten the rock who can hide you.
- 3:57So you may plant the finest grapevines and import the most
- 4:00expensive seedlings. They may sprout on the day you
- 4:04set them out. Yes, they may blossom on the
- 4:08very morning you plant them, but you will never pick any grapes
- 4:12from them. Your only harvest will be a load
- 4:15of grief and unrelieved pain. Listen, the armies of many
- 4:20nations roar like the roaring of the sea.
- 4:24Hear the Thunder of the mighty forces as they rush forward like
- 4:28thundering waves. But though they Thunder like
- 4:33Breakers on a beach, God will silence them and they will run
- 4:38away. They will flee like chaff
- 4:41scattered by the wind, like a tumbleweed whirling before a
- 4:45storm. In the evening Israel waits in
- 4:49terror, but by dawn its enemies are dead.
- 4:53This is the just reward of those who plunder us, a fitting end
- 4:58for those who destroy us. God, you are sovereign.
- 5:14You rule in the heavens far above us, with your vantage
- 5:20point of all eternity and space. Before you thank you that it's
- 5:28with this might, this power, and this eternity that you choose to
- 5:35see us and our plight today. God, thank you that in your
- 5:41enormity you still bend your ear to hear our words and to hear
- 5:46this prayer right now. Thank you that you love us.
- 5:50You are our Father and we are your children.
- 5:56We just claim that truth today as we Nestle under your wing and
- 6:02your protection. We feel your love and we love
- 6:06you and we worship you. It's in the name of Jesus that
- 6:11we pray. Amen.
