- 0:03Speaker 1: Welcome back to you Com Football Coaches Show with Jim Moore.
- 0:06Speaker 1: A little bit later on, we were talking to Cam Chadwick,
- 0:08Speaker 1: who had three I INT's in the game, and also
- 0:11Speaker 1: Antonio o'harris, who played a sound game on defense. But
- 0:15Speaker 1: let's continue with the offense here for a moment. Cam
- 0:19Speaker 1: Edwards ran the ball hard and he always does. And
- 0:23Speaker 1: we've been talking about the running attack the last few
- 0:25Speaker 1: weeks and we're not gaining the same amount of yardage
- 0:28Speaker 1: as it did last year. But I thought that you
- 0:31Speaker 1: established a little bit of a of a crunch to
- 0:35Speaker 1: the game when you did run the ball in the
- 0:37Speaker 1: first quarter. Would you agree with that?
- 0:40Speaker 2: I think you're exactly right. Is uh.
- 0:44Speaker 3: You know, they were playing a little bit more of
- 0:46Speaker 3: a pass first defense philosophy, so us being able to
- 0:50Speaker 3: come out and run the ball and established the run
- 0:53Speaker 3: early open open some things up in the pass game,
- 0:56Speaker 3: you know. And look, we're not running the ball as
- 0:59Speaker 3: much or for as many ours because you know, I mean,
- 1:02Speaker 3: we're twelfth in the country and passing offense. Yukon is
- 1:07Speaker 3: twelfth in the country and passing offense. I don't know
- 1:09Speaker 3: if it's ever been achieved, but we're not stupid. We're
- 1:15Speaker 3: not stupid. Fifteenth in the country and scoring offense, you know,
- 1:19Speaker 3: so we're obviously we're you know, we're utilizing our personnel,
- 1:25Speaker 3: and we have some really good personnel to utilize.
- 1:29Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:30Speaker 1: It's funny in the Patriots heyday with Tom Brady, and
- 1:34Speaker 1: they didn't have much of a running attack. Several times
- 1:37Speaker 1: during the years he was, you know, winning Super Bowls,
- 1:41Speaker 1: they used to throw the ball to set up the run.
- 1:43Speaker 2: They used to do it all the time.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And you'd say, well, my goodness, Tom Brady just threw
- 1:47Speaker 1: the ball forty five times today. Well you won the game.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Does it really really matter how many times you're in it?
- 1:55Speaker 2: Well?
- 1:56Speaker 3: Does And we see, here's the thing is, we do
- 1:58Speaker 3: have a good rushing attack. I mean Cam Edwards is
- 2:00Speaker 3: twenty second in the United States of American rushing yards
- 2:03Speaker 3: and he's twenty first in touchdowns scored.
- 2:06Speaker 2: That's a pretty good running attack, you know.
- 2:08Speaker 3: So I think it's just been overshadowed by the success
- 2:11Speaker 3: we've had thus far throwing the ball.
- 2:13Speaker 2: But yeah, we can run the football. There's no doubt
- 2:16Speaker 2: about that.
- 2:17Speaker 3: I mean, in anyone that says that we can't that
- 2:19Speaker 3: really doesn't have their facts straight. You know, it's just
- 2:22Speaker 3: a matter of as you said, like how are you
- 2:26Speaker 3: going to tack the defense and what are they trying
- 2:28Speaker 3: to take away? And we've talked about this a lot
- 2:31Speaker 3: on this show through the year. Is balance. You know
- 2:34Speaker 3: what is balance and you know how I feel about it. It's
- 2:37Speaker 3: not fifty to fifty run pass or fifty to fifty
- 2:40Speaker 3: run pass yardage. It's being able to do what you
- 2:42Speaker 3: need to do in that particular moment to move the
- 2:44Speaker 3: ball down the field. And so, like you said at
- 2:48Speaker 3: the top with your question, is coming out that first
- 2:50Speaker 3: drive and being able to run it.
- 2:52Speaker 2: That was really important for us.
- 2:54Speaker 3: You know, re established that you better pay attention to
- 2:57Speaker 3: the run game as well.
- 2:58Speaker 2: You can't just be a coverage for you and.
- 3:01Speaker 1: You also a ransom. He went deeper into the playbook.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I thought Gordon Samus was coming up with some good
- 3:08Speaker 1: stuff in the game. And you had Terrence Smith run
- 3:12Speaker 1: the ball out of a wildcat five times for thirty
- 3:14Speaker 1: five yards. Malichi Greeves had a couple of carries and
- 3:19Speaker 1: for eleven yards. I mean it had a different look
- 3:22Speaker 1: to it, and I think that that is great to
- 3:25Speaker 1: be able to do that here in the last four
- 3:27Speaker 1: looking ahead at the next four games, because the opponent
- 3:30Speaker 1: now has to go way, wait a minute, now they're
- 3:32Speaker 1: throwing the ball, but now they might do this, so
- 3:35Speaker 1: they might do that. It just gives them so much
- 3:37Speaker 1: to think about.
- 3:38Speaker 3: You're exactly right, you know, and late in the season,
- 3:42Speaker 3: not becoming predictable. You know, teams now have had a
- 3:45Speaker 3: chance to watch nine games if they wish about us,
- 3:48Speaker 3: and there are certain tendencies that develop. So being able
- 3:51Speaker 3: to break tendencies late in the game, being able to
- 3:53Speaker 3: you know, get Terrence involved because he's got so much
- 3:57Speaker 3: more comprehension of what we're doing offensively, being able to
- 4:00Speaker 3: take you know, meet we call him and play him
- 4:04Speaker 3: because he's an explosive, talented kid. Now he's not gonna
- 4:07Speaker 3: burn his red shirt because he hasn't played until now.
- 4:10Speaker 2: So we can play these four games.
- 4:11Speaker 3: You can play in a bull game, doing some things
- 4:13Speaker 3: with the wildcat, you know, getting some young guys in there.
- 4:18Speaker 3: You know, I've said it many times. I mean and
- 4:19Speaker 3: I'll you know, Gordy is, in my opinion, one of
- 4:23Speaker 3: the top offensive coordinators in college football. And I think
- 4:25Speaker 3: the numbers prove it out. And I think that the
- 4:27Speaker 3: creativity confirms that as well. So really lucky to have
- 4:33Speaker 3: him here as part of this staff because he is
- 4:35Speaker 3: a I said a couple of weeks ago, you talk
- 4:37Speaker 3: about one of the up and comers in college football,
- 4:40Speaker 3: who that's Gordy.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and that applies to the receiving and passing game,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I think too, because I mean, look at the numbers
- 4:48Speaker 1: the other day, right, the tight ends who hadn't been
- 4:51Speaker 1: featured a heck of a lot in the last couple
- 4:53Speaker 1: of weeks. But you get Lewis Hansen with three catches,
- 4:57Speaker 1: you get Alex Honig with another one, and the tight
- 5:01Speaker 1: ends had some valuable yardage for you. And also you
- 5:05Speaker 1: know guys like Romelo Murphy who's had a great year.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I think I only made one catch, but then you
- 5:11Speaker 1: had Juice Farien with three and John Nider with five.
- 5:14Speaker 1: So you're not a one trick pony, is what I'm
- 5:16Speaker 1: trying to get at. So how does that, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 1: How does that, as you view that going down the
- 5:22Speaker 1: stretch here, give you a good sense of where the
- 5:25Speaker 1: Huskies can go here?
- 5:28Speaker 3: Well, I think, and you'd have to check this, but
- 5:30Speaker 3: I believe that Joe through passes the twelve different receivers.
- 5:36Speaker 3: I don't know if you have the stats right there,
- 5:38Speaker 3: but it helps us in that, you know, we can
- 5:41Speaker 3: really focus on playing hard and playing physical and playing
- 5:44Speaker 3: fast and know that if someone asks to come out
- 5:47Speaker 3: of the game for a breather, we've got someone that
- 5:49Speaker 3: can go in and be effective.
- 5:50Speaker 2: You know. And then you mentioned the tight ends.
- 5:52Speaker 3: You know, Alex and Lou and Juice their production in
- 5:58Speaker 3: the past game you mentioned, but if you watch the
- 6:00Speaker 3: run game, Lou, Lou and Uh and Alex were outstanding.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Matter of fact, they they got recognition after the game
- 6:09Speaker 3: and the team meeting. You know, we have certain awards
- 6:11Speaker 3: that we give out really for the way they played
- 6:14Speaker 3: on offense, which you know, you see the catches, but
- 6:16Speaker 3: what you don't see is they're they were dominating in
- 6:19Speaker 3: the run game as well. So you know, it's all
- 6:23Speaker 3: about being able to spread the ball around, spread the field.
- 6:26Speaker 3: You want to make the field as long and as
- 6:28Speaker 3: wide as you can for the defense to try to defend,
- 6:32Speaker 3: you know, and that takes playmakers, and then it takes
- 6:35Speaker 3: a scheme that gets the playmakers open in space. And
- 6:39Speaker 3: like I said, Gordie is doing a great job of that,
- 6:41Speaker 3: as is the rest of the staff.
- 6:43Speaker 1: What is that formation that you come out in offensively
- 6:47Speaker 1: where you have the two tight ends set up on
- 6:49Speaker 1: either side of Joe Friano and say Cam Edwards behind him.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Is there a name for that because.
- 6:55Speaker 3: On the backfield you mean, yeah, bone like the old
- 6:59Speaker 3: wishbone is?
- 6:59Speaker 2: You know? Is that what it is?
- 7:00Speaker 1: I didn't know what to call it.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Well you can call it. It's you know what it is, Mike.
- 7:04Speaker 3: It's like an inverted wishbone, remember the old wishbone with.
- 7:06Speaker 2: The quarterback, the center and the fallback in the two backs.
- 7:09Speaker 3: It's just kind of an inverted wishbone because you're in
- 7:11Speaker 3: the shotgun and so you know, with guys like Joe
- 7:15Speaker 3: and Lou and we put Alex back I'm sorry, we
- 7:17Speaker 3: put Juice back there as well. They're good blockers, you know,
- 7:22Speaker 3: and so it gives you the opportunity to kind of
- 7:24Speaker 3: go either way.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Yeah, that's great. I love it, to be honest. You
- 7:28Speaker 2: can just call it from now on. They're in the bone,
- 7:30Speaker 2: that bone formation.
- 7:32Speaker 1: All right, all right, I'm gonna do it, all right,
- 7:34Speaker 1: Jim Morrow with us a quick time out back with
- 7:36Speaker 1: more on the Yukon Football Coaches Show here on Lear
