Transcript
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Messiah in Life, the podcast hosted by Bishop Justin D.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Elwell.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: We begin a series entitled, For He Wrote of Me, a teaching series exploring the scriptures through the lens of Jesus the Messiah, rooted in his declaration in John 5, 46-47, that Moses wrote about him.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: As Jesus said, For if you believed Moses, you would believe well.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: For he wrote of me.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: From the weekly Torah portion, we will explore the promises, patterns, covenants, and prophetic declarations that point us to Messiah.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Approaching the scriptures from this perspective, we will discover how the story of redemption unfolds throughout the Word of God, revealing the one who brings its promises to fulfillment.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Because the scriptures are not a collection of disconnected stories, but one unfolding testimony of God's redemptive purposes through Messiah.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Now to Bishop Justin.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Alright, we are back in Better Sheet.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: This is the series for the year, for he wrote of me.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: The entire Torah cycle that I'm teaching this year will be focused on that premise, for he wrote of me.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: In order to, as I'll explain here in a few moments, how did the apostles and how did Messiah himself view the Torah?
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: And how does that help us to interpret and read Moses properly?
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: We cannot read Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy as a separate story, as an old story that has been set aside for a new story, because of what Messiah himself said.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: I was on a had a conversation with Dr.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Carl Koch the other day, and he was reminding me of something that Dr.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: John Garr said.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Remember, Messiah said, think not that I have come to do away with the law and the prophets.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: And all we've been doing since then is think.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: I guess that's funnier with a group of scholars than it is.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Think not, and all we've been doing is thinking.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: All right, let me explain it again.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Think.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: Think not.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: But anyway, so as we move through this year, we're not going to superimpose Messiah on the text.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: We're going to allow the text to bring forth the Messiah, as Messiah, as Moses would have written of him.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: I'm going to read briefly from Genesis chapter 1, 1 and 2, just as Barb read, but similar but different.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: And the Spirit of God was hovering, fluttering over the face of the waters.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: This is God's word.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: When we approached the Torah, if the Torah was simply about Israel and the Jewish people, it would have begun at the Exodus, as Rabbi Shlomo Riskin points out.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: It would have begun at a story of freedom, of liberty, of deliverance from a land of restriction, from a land of slavery.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: We would have started there and moved forward.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: But it does not begin there.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: It begins, obviously, at creation, the account of creation, from the heavens of the earth to humanity, made in the image and likeness of the living God, to Adam being formed by the Lord, Eve being brought forth from Adam, them being placed in the garden, setting to work, humanity, or excuse me, the first murder, obviously, with Cain and Abel, the descent of humanity into depravity, and one man, as the Torah concludes for this portion of Bereshit, one man who found grace in the eyes of God.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Beautiful, as you will read this week with Noah.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: But Noah, comfort, found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: Now, Israel obviously is part of the central narrative of the Torah itself, but it's larger than the story of one nation.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: It is the story of redemptive history.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: It is how the Lord will reconcile and make all things new, how he will bring that which has suffered under sin, suffered in sin, suffered as a result from sin, into a renewed heavens and earth, to a renewed city that has never known sin or the effects of it.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: For us who are a Messiah, who will be brought to that place, eternally separated from sin, to suffer, to cry, to be in sorrow no more.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Beautiful as the Lord unfolds this.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: But it is the story of how he will restore creation, it begins this, how he will redeem humanity, but ultimately bring blessing to the one new man, to Jew and Gentile brought together in Messiah.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: But before Israel is liberated, before the Lord calls Adam, before the nations are divided, we remember the story of Abraham emerges from the division of the nations into seventy peoples.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Before Noah builds the ark, even before Adam and Eve sin, the Torah reveals the Messiah to us.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Because Messiah is the central theme, the central part of the story.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: So in this portion, we see types of Messiah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: We see him as really emerging as the final Adam before he even forms the first.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: When we look at the types beginning in chapter one, which I'll talk about in just a moment, but even in chapter two, where the Lord forms Adam from the dust of the earth, his hands are forming.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: I have a very high Christological view, and I make no apologies for that.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: When I see the Lord forming Adam, I see the Messiah forming Adam.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: That is my Christological perspective.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: So this year, Lord willing, you will also have what we call nosebleed Christology, such a high view of who Messiah is.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: As they say, your nose will bleed because you're so high.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: But when we see him forming Adam, breathing life into him, breathing his nishama into him, his soul into him, taking, and so beautifully having, you know, I think quite often we picture Adam as being this ignoramus.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: But the amazing thing is that he's standing there in creation and he's naming, and the Lord uses the names that Adam comes up with, but also there's nothing in creation, nothing in creation that is suitable for him, and it's not good for him to be alone.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: And that's a beautiful picture, and we've talked about that in Ephesians at great length, the purpose and the meaning of it.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: And as I've said, are we living under the curse of Genesis 3 or are we living in the renewal?
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: Are we living in the renewal, the renewed purpose for men and women?
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: I submit to you that we are living in that renewal.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: And then we see the Messiah, and I love how the Aramaic Peshitta words this, and John the Apostle captures this when he said, and the word of the Lord walked with Adam and Eve in the spirit of the day.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: The word of the Lord walked, and the word became flesh and dwelt among us.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: In the beginning was the word, as we'll talk about in a moment.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: But I love how the Aramaic is so, uh gives us such an incredible picture.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: And that was what I believe John is drawing on from the Peshitta, from the text that he would have known, that the word of the Lord was walking.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: They heard the word.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: They heard the word of the Lord.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: And I wrote a devotional that obviously I can't share because I don't have the platforms to do it right now.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: But they heard the word of the Lord, but because they had tasted, they hid themselves.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: They covered themselves.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: They ran to the trees.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: But here he is walking with them.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: In the spirit of the day.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: And as I've said so, I don't, I don't know why translators rely on cool of the day.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: It makes lexically no sense whatsoever.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: But the spirit of the day, you know, that tells me that no matter what the day brings, no matter what he has ordained or how it comes out, he is walking with us.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: The spirit of this day, whatever this day is, he is here with us.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: But then at the end of the chapter, after the pronouncements, after the correction, we see that the Lord covers them and clothes them.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Where did the garments of skin come from?
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: But the final Adam making substitutionary sacrifice for the first Adam.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: So before we even leave the garden, we see the doctrine of substitutionary sacrifice.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: And of course, when the fullness of time comes and the word then becomes flesh, we see how it is accomplished in the full.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: But then the pronouncements.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: So in this portion, we see the types of Messiah, the final Adam before the even creation of the new or the Adam, the first Adam.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: And we see Messiah as Redeemer and Restorer.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Moses is picturing this.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Moses is seeing this as, again, as I believe, as he's sitting on Sinai, he the Father says, No one sees my face and lives, but then he said, I spoke to Moses face to face.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: And of course, uh, in Genesis, excuse me, in Exodus 24, they saw the God of Israel.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: And I do believe that it is a Christophany that they that Moses beholds, that the Moses fellowships with, that Moses receives the Torah, the written law from.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: The very essence, the very character of who our God is expressed in a way that we can fathom him.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: He is the Redeemer, He is the restorer.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: So where does the Torah begin?
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Where does the Torah begin to first reveal the Messiah right from the beginning?
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Birshitra Elohim.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: In the beginning, God created.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: I remember in seminary as I was uh doing oh, as I was doing a survey, a New Testament survey class.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: I remember reading, we were going through the Gospel of John.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: And I had one of those moments where my entire perspective, my entire interpretive frame changed in an instant.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: In John chapter five, in verse forty-six, Messiah says this for if you believed Moses, you would believe me.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: For he wrote of me.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: That simple clause, for he for he wrote of me, changed how I viewed scripture, how I interpreted scripture, how I approached scripture.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: And why is he saying that?
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Why is he offering this rebuke?
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Because by and large, Moses had been displaced by tradition.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Moses was still cited, Moses was still referenced, but the most important interpretive and lifestyle frame was that of tradition.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: Tradition that makes void the word of God when it tramples upon the word of God, leading us away rather than to.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Beginning at the law and the prophets, Paul taught them right from the beginning.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: For he wrote of me.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: So what he is doing is giving us an important key to understanding what the Torah is, what the Torah is for, and why I've always said that Sinai, we have the covenant that begins in faith with Abraham, we have the covenant that is discipleship at Sinai.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: How do we walk as a free people with the Lord?
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: That important interpretive key to understanding the Torah, where Yeshua is not simply saying that Moses predicted certain events in his life.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: That's he's going far greater than that, far deeper than that.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: It's not just that he would he wrote down things that would happen, it's that he wrote down who he is, so that when he arrived, we would not miss him.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: He was saying that Moses bore witness to him.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: How could he bear witness unless he saw him, he experienced him, he knew him?
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: We bear witness to that which we know, and that is what Messiah is telling us.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: So when we open the Torah, we should learn to ask this question: where does Moses point us to Messiah?
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Where do the people, the promises, the patterns that we see, the actions, the themes recorded by Moses come to the full in Yeshua?
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: So the purpose of this long series of this year for erodomie is to read the Torah in light of that question.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Every week looking at where does Moses reveal Yeshua?
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: How do we understand Yeshua from this portion?
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: And where better to begin than in the beginning?
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: Where can we begin but in the beginning?
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: And it's just it it it is it's so beautiful to read Genesis 1 and to see the poetry, to see the song, to hear the song of it in your mind, in your heart.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: It is so poetic, and it is there's a continuing refrain, just like we have in popular music.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: And can continuing on.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: That's the refrain.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: The Hebrew wordsit speaks of beginnings, he speaks of first things, and Messiah is there in those first things, as Paul will tell us in a few moments.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: But Moses, again, when we think of this, Moses takes us back to the beginning of creation itself.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Again, why didn't he just say, Lord, I we've just had this incredible experience.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: I want to start there.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Can we start when you called us to get up and go?
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: And the Lord says, No, we have to talk about who I am in the beginning, what I did from the beginning, what I'm doing from the beginning.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Before Abraham, before Isaac, before Jacob, before Israel, before the covenant, before the tabernacle, before Sinai, there was the Lord.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: And Genesis reveals him as the creator.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: The beautiful thing about the Word of God is it never sets out to prove that the Lord exists.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: It never sets out to prove that God exists.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: It accepts the it accepts and reveals simply that he is.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: He is, and it never disputes that.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: It's a story of him.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: But when we in today's practices, we insert ourselves over and over and over.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: We want it to speak to our cause, we want it to speak to our uh positions and so on.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: But he's speaking from himself to himself, and we are brought into that conversation.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: The earth is described so poetically.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: Darkness on the space of the deep, and then the beautiful language of the Spirit of God hovering, fluttering, like a mama hen fluttering over her chic.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: That's the language of it.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: It's a beautiful language of creating, of formation, of care, of tenderness.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: And that's how the Lord reveals himself.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: As he will interact with us, as he will interact so tenderly with us.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: But when we turn to from Moses to our apostolic witness John, John does something remarkable and so beautiful.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: John deliberately takes us back to the very word that Moses began, Bereshit Chaya Hadavar, in the beginning was the word.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: That word that walked with Adam and Eve in the, I almost said cool of the day, in the spirit of the day.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: The word that walked with him in the Adam and Eve in the I love that.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: He walked with them.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: He had a relationship with them, not just Adam.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: Hey Eve, the Lord and I are gonna have a little powwow.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: Make sure you're back behind us, right?
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: Thank the Lord we don't have hymnals in here.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: I'd be having other doctors for different reasons.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: There's grace and forgiveness in the house of the Lord, amen.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: That was a little robust.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: In the beginning, beautiful words, in the beginning was the word.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: See, John, dear friends, is not beginning with an unrelated story.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: He's not saying that this story is detached from the previous story.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: It's remarkable because in scholarship they consider John, the Gospel of John, to be the most uh directed mostly mainly toward the nations.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: And they and some even refer to it as the least Jewish of the Gospels.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: And I've always approached it as the most Jewish of the Gospels, reflecting the heritage, the history, the Torah itself, and capturing who Messiah is.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: John is presenting the I am to his readers.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: But he's not starting some unrelated story.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: Here, everybody, I want to talk about this guy who just showed up in the Galilee.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: He popped out of heaven and started walking around saying good things, and he's a good guy.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: No, it goes back to Beresheet, where Messiah is revealed there in the very beginning.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: He's bringing us back to Genesis.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Genesis, back to Bereshit, back to Genesis 1, and revealing something about the one that has been from the beginning.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: He says so beautifully, the Hadavar Hayah etha Elohim, Vah Elohim, Hayah, Hadavar.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: When they say the apostles did not teach that Messiah was divine, they miss the very beginning of the gospel.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: The Word was with God.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: That word who walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the day.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: With the cool of the day, he walked with them was the same one who was in the beginning with God because he is God.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: Then John makes this astonishing, astonishing declaration that can only be attributed to the Lord.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: All things came to be through him, and apart from him, nothing came into being that came to be.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: John is telling us that that word became flesh.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: We don't read John 1 as an activity, but it is.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: It is his birth narrative, the incarnation, and the word intended in human flesh and dwelt among us.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: He took on a tent of flesh.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: He's tabernacling among his people.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: And he's dwelling with us.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: That word, that word that we can scarcely fathom, took on a tent of flesh and now walks with his people.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: This is John's glorious revelation of who the fullness of Messiah is, right from the beginning of his gospel.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: That's high Christology, folks.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: That is the highest view of Messiah.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: He was not a man who became God, as they teach down in Houston, Texas, in one of those big churches.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: That's adoptionism, that's a heresy.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: But that's adoptionism, and that is a heresy.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Did I name a name?
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: We can edit that out in post, beloved friends.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: It's on the record, so it's not.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: But he didn't just simply show up in the first century.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: He's already there in the beginning.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: And John will account for all that he's done.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: Everything that he, everything that John accounts for proves the divinity of our Messiah.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: His humanity, his divinity, truly God, truly man.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Not half and half, not a percentage of a percentage, but truly, truly.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: He is the eternal word.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: The creation described by Moses came into existence through him.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Is that your testimony of him?
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: That you believe that all things came to be through him?
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: See, before Yeshua walked the roads of Galilee, before he taught in the temple, before he called the disciples, before he went to the cross, he was the word who was with God and who was God.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: The one who would enter creation was the one through whom creation came into existence.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Is there anything too great for him?
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Can he be limited by anything?
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: No.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: And we've been called to follow him.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: The incredible thing is that he knew what part of darkness you were sitting in, where you had parked yourself.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: He knew who you were before he called you.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: He knew what you would do after he called you.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: He knew that you would need his sufficient grace every day.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: He knew that you would need to walk in his forgiveness every day.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: He knew that you would need his mercy every day.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: He doesn't disqualify you.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: We disqualify ourselves.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: But because he is God, because he knows us, because he knew us, because he will know us forever, my goodness, how much we, how much we make less of what he has done.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: We need to make much of him.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: John continues to talk about the imagery, it takes us back into the imagery of creation as we read in chapter one.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: I'm not really referencing it, but I should go back to it.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: But in chapter one of his gospel, he gives us this, he's just basically midrashing teaching on chapter one of Genesis.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: In the beginning was the word, the word was with God, the word was God.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: He was in the beginning with God.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: So the world did not receive him, the world did not know him, and his own brethren did not know him.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: Who didn't know him?
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Everyone.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: Because the Lord has to call us to him.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: But to all who did receive him, who believe in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of the man, but of God.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: Why are you here?
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: Because of the will of God.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: That's again the speaking to his sovereignty, who he is.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: We're here because he has called us.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: We're here because he has saved us.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: We're here because he has renewed us.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: How can I say that in the midst of this decaying 35-year-old body?
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: How can I say that?
- 28:19unknown: His grace is sufficient.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: That's a good answer.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: His grace is sufficient.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: I'm not getting out of here alive, beloved friends.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: And I'm sorry to say, neither are you.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: But one day, this what?
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: This mortality will take on immortality.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: And there will be no more thyroids to go wonky anymore.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: Glory to God, praise his name.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: And brand new knees.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: Knee surgery by the great physician.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: Praise the Lord.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: Hallelujah.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: And the word became flesh.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: And he tented.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: I don't know why they say dwelt.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: I know they're attempting to draw us back to Exodus 25.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: But we need the tabernacle.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: We need to see him tenting.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: We need to see him the fullness of the presence of God that dwelt in the camp of Israel.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: Among his people, the glory of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Glory to his name.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: So before he walked in the Galilee, before he did all of that, he is in the beginning with God.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: And then John brings us back.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: And even more so, Genesis begins with darkness over the face of the deep.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: And then what does the apostle say?
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: In him was life.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Bo Chayu Chaim.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: And the life was the light of men.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Hise does not overcome it.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: It cannot overcome it.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: Where are you?
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: Are you in him?
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Are you in his light?
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Can darkness overcome you?
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: No.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: Because he has already overcome it.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: And he overcame it in Genesis 1.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: He overcame it from the beginning.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: John is showing us the revelation of Messiah.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Again, it's not a new story.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: It's not a new story disconnected from the Torah.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: No, he's showing us the continuity of who the Messiah is from the beginning, who desires to be with his people.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Who desires to know us?
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: Who desires for us to know him?
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: Who wants relationship with us.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: You don't have to beg and plead.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: You don't have to go before him and say, please, Lord, please, Lord, please, Lord, I uh please help me, Lord, with knowing you.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: How much more?
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: We don't need to do that.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: We don't need to ingratiate ourselves to him.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: We don't need to somehow try to appreciate.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: We're no longer sinners in the hands of an angry God.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: We're the saved, the redeemed, the holy ones set apart unto him entirely.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: Because he rescued us, because he's delivered us, because he's sanctifying us.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: Friends, I'm not kicking and screaming against what the Lord is doing in my family.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: I'm not.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Because he's refining.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: He knows what he's doing.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: I don't know what he's doing, but he does.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: Does my faith crumble when difficulty comes, when challenge comes?
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Lord, I hope not.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Otherwise, the last 22 years of public preaching has gone up in smoke.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: If I was to turn away now, it would all have been for nothing.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: But the Lord has shown me through every hill and every valley who he is.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: We preach from the valley as we preach from the summit.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: He doesn't wait for us to climb up there to say something worthwhile about him.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: Because he knows us there, he knows us down there.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: And then when we're even further down, you think the valley is the lowest point?
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: Nah, it's the swamp at the bottom of the valley.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: And it's in the muck, in the mud, and the mire, and Zachariah tells us that the Lord is right down there with us.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Guess what?
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: We're gonna come out of that muck and filth, dirty, stinky.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Although this morning the aroma around the building was a little bit uh a little bit too much uh country for me right now.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: Glory to God.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: We wonder why, you know, when we go out, we're supposed to be the aroma of Christ to those who are really they're they're living in the aroma of death.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: So why do people respond to us differently negatively?
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Because we're the aroma of life, life that they do not yet have.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: So it's not a new story, beloved.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: It will never be a new story from Genesis.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: The imagery of creation becomes the language through which John explains the coming of the Messiah, the Lord who brought light into the darkness of creation, now brought the light of Messiah into the darkness of this world.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Paul gives us the same testimony.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: Paul gives us a marvelous testimony, for by him, third person, he's speaking of him over there, by him all things were created, both in the heavens and on the earth.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Again, referencing back to Genesis.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: Visible and invisible, you hear me say, Olam.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: Baruchataranu Meleka Ulam, when I say invisible and invisible, king of the universe, seen and unseen, referencing that idea.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: Both in the heavens and the earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, and here is here is the legitimate, here is the real versus the counterfeit, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were created through him and what?
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: For him.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: Created for him.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: That he would glorify himself through it.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: Difficulties are created to glorify him.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: Difficulties happen to glorify him.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: You can glorify the devil.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: Look what the devil did.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: I don't raise his name.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: If something comes upon us, the Lord's desire, the Lord's will is that we would glorify him through it.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: Not in spite of it, but through it.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Lord, for this.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: Because otherwise we don't believe what the scripture says that this is the day that He has made.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: We will rejoice and be glad in it.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: Sometimes that rejoicing is a little somber, it's a little muted, it's a little, but still we will rejoice.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: I know I'm messing with some of your theology, but that's why I'm here.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: All things were created through him and for him.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Everything that comes after verse 1 is for Yeshua.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: To reveal who he is, to reveal what he's doing, to reveal his plan, to reveal his purpose.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: See, Paul does not place Messiah somewhere within the created order as if he was simply the chief of God's creation.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Paul does not do that.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: That's a heresy.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: He places him right there at creation, in the position of the creator, the messiah creator, on that side of the distinction.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: All things have been created through him.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: It's exactly what the apostle John told us.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: John and Paul do not disagree.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: John and James and Paul do not disagree.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: John, James, Paul, and Peter do not disagree.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: They are united in the perspective that Yeshua is Lord, Yeshua is God.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: He is the Son, distinct from the person of the Father, but they are homoosia, they're one substance.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: But creation came through Yeshua and it exists for him.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: And this takes us back to John 5.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: For if you believed Moses, you would believe me.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: For he wrote of me.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: Higher scholarship will tell you that Moses could not have possibly written the law.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: We rely on the JEDP hypothesis in higher scholarship that says, no, it's really an amalgam of different traditions at different times, reflecting the Babylonian and the priestly classes, and they brought it together as one story to validate themselves while they were in exile in order to push the story and push the narrative forward to return to the promised land.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: Messiah said he, Moses, wrote of me.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: That settles it.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: Who wrote the Torah?
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: Moses.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: Why do I believe that?
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Yeshua, who is God, said it.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: What does that mean?
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: It's settled.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: No higher criticism needed.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: He wrote of me.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: Moses begins with the creation of all things.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: How the excuse me, how these things were brought forth, first brought forth, and what for what purpose?
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: Because every day reveals Messiah, every every element of creation reveals Messiah.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: And we see that story from beginning to end as the Lord is reconciling all of his creation unto himself.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: The pictures, the types, the shadows, the themes, everything comes together.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: And we need to behold it and know that Moses wrote of Messiah.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: It's not an afterthought.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: It is not a theological afterthought that somehow in the second, third, fourth centuries they went, you know what, we've really got to pin this story of Jesus to that stuff that the Jews have.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: That's not what the apostles gave to us, and is not what is preserved.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: He begins with creation.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: John takes us back to the beginning and reveals the eternal word through whom all things are brought into existence.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: Paul confirms that all things were created through Messiah and for him.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: Then Yeshua tells us that Moses wrote of him.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: So when we read Genesis, when we open Genesis, we're not just reading about an account of creation.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: We're reading of who Messiah is.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: He's there in the beginning.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: Everything that unfolds unfolds through him.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: By the will of the Father, everything unfolds through him, everything is created through him.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: And glory to God, it is created for him.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: And guess what?
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: That's you.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: You're part of that.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: Men, women, part of it.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: Yes?
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: If I was preaching only to men, I'd say it's just you men.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: And then I would give him a spanking.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: How are we doing on that, guys?
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: But the beauty of what he has called men to be, and the beauty of what he has called women to be, not an opposition.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: Not an opposition.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: I can tell you that I would not have survived these years of ministry without my bride.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: Because long before any of you knew that there was a problem, she knew there was a problem.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: When I needed counsel, she gave me counsel.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: When I needed a swift kick in the britches, she told me I needed a swift kick in the britches.
- 40:12unknown: Amen.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: She can testify that I did not, in fact, pay attention.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: But that is what she's there for.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: When I was being stupid, she would remind me that I was being stupid.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: When I needed encouragement, she gave me encouragement.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: She was the one that bolstered, she was the buttress that came up alongside of to keep me walking all these years.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: And that's what she's called to be.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: That's who she is called to.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: She's not subservient to me.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: I'm not uh establishing my dominion over her.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: I need her to be right here.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: We need to be connected together.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: And even now, she's still the stronger party.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: She's still the strong part of this one new uh husband and wife, this one new flesh he creates through the two.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: Still the stronger one.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: I'm complaining about this.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: She's not complaining about what she's got going on.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: But again, that's the strength of the Ezra Kenegdo.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: That's the strength of who the woman is to be.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: I wish we would stop reading of reading of women through Genesis chapter 3, right?
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: And read who women are supposed to be through Genesis chapter 2.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: I apologize if that offends you, but you'll be over in about four minutes.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: See, when we open Genesis, we're reading not just the beginning of the Bible, the beginning of the creation, we're beginning the encounter with the one that Moses wrote about.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: That's right from the beginning.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: If you read enough rabbinic texts that have not been adulterated with unbelief, you have throughout the centuries rabbinic sources that describe Yeshua to a T.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: Who he was, what he did, what he said, what he would teach.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: Because you cannot help but see him as the Lord opened your eyes to him.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: See, we're not searching for Jesus by forcing him into passages.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: We're seeing how Moses wrote of him, what he is teaching us, what he is still teaching us.
- 42:41SPEAKER_01: See, beloved friends, we're being discipled by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God, the full counsel of the Word of God.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: Not some part of it detached from the other.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: We're being discipled by the Spirit of God as He leads us through His Word and He leads us through this life that He has called us to.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: We're allowing the testimony of the Apostles.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: That's what we're looking at there.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: I don't know if that graphic really depicts what I wanted it to, but I think it's close enough for now.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Still got the surfer Jesus.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: AI wouldn't smarten up.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: We're working on it.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: But we're allowing the testimony of the apostles.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: That's why I'm going to be teaching one and two John over the next year, or excuse me, one and two Peter over the next year, as a parallel to this series.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: Because the testimony of the apostles and ultimately the testimony of Yeshua about himself, he teaches us how to read Moses.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: He teaches us how do we read Moses, how do we read the story that is contained therein?
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: God and Genesis begins, it begins with.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Him creating.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: John reveals the word was there.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: Again, in the beginning, Paul identifies the creator with the Messiah.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: This is who our Yeshua is.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: And Yeshua tells us that Moses wrote of him.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: That is his confirmation of the importance of the word of Moses.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: So we need to dig in.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: We're digging in, we're going to dig in deep from week to week, probably on a very specific subject, so don't expect me to teach the whole portion.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: Because we need to see as Moses wrote of him, where Messiah is there.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: And we need to hear from the apostles themselves.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: See, Moses begins with creation.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: John reveals the word.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: Paul identifies him with Messiah, the word with Messiah, and Yeshua tells us he wrote of me.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: And that's where our journey begins.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: We can see through all that he has revealed.
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: We can see how he has revealed it to us, the purpose for it.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: From week to week, we will turn to it in order to see.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: As next week, in the portion you read about Noah and the beauty of the Noah, the Ark, the Teva, and so on.
- 45:10SPEAKER_01: I'll probably put a little blurb out somewhere about that.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: But I hope and pray that over this next year, as we introduce different subjects, different concepts, different ideas, exegetical ideas, how we how we parse through Scripture.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: That through this next series, this next year, that you'll see Him revealed in a way that perhaps you haven't seen before.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: That we would take the full counsel of the Word of God seriously, that we would rightly divide it with seriousness in order to glorify the Messiah.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: Not so that we have new tidbits of information that impresses our friends, but that we are confirmed, we see the confirmation of who he is, and we continue to walk in that and share who he is.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: That we can with confidence say, yes, all that stuff that you're seeing out there that is beautiful.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: Sunsets that are absolutely gorgeous.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: I don't know, I'm still inspired by a sunset.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: I will sit and watch the sunset build till it's gone.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: That's gorgeous.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: It's absolutely beautiful.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: I'm amazed by it.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: And even the sunrise in the morning as it comes up right in my face.
- 46:23SPEAKER_01: Glory to God.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: After I stop grumbling about it, I start praising the Lord for it.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: But I want you through this next year to develop a very high view of who Messiah is.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: That's my prayer, that's my hope.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: And Lord, that's my message for you today.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: God bless you guys.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: Love you.
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: Thank you for studying with us.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: And until our next episode, may the Lord bless and keep you all in the mighty name of Jesus.
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: Amen.
