The forest does not begin where the last farm ends. On those days the earth herself is said to rest. Most Asante name her Asase Yaa, Earth born on Thursday. Among the Fante she is often Asase Efua, Earth born on Friday. Either way the rule is the same. Do not till. Do not bury. Do not walk the deep bush as if it were a storeroom. Leave the green alone so the spirits may walk it without being crowded by hunger.
