- 1:02in his latest article for Autoblog, out this week.
- 1:05The longest intro ever for the shortest episode ever.
- 1:08I loved it. Is that it?
- 1:12That's all. All right, the end.
- 1:15And now you don't have to listen to the show.
- 1:19So welcome to this week's That Car Show.
- 1:22The gang is back together for another crew show and we're
- 1:26going to kick things off with a bit of a good news, bad news.
- 1:29So let's start with some good news.
- 1:31The good news is that Ryan has had a discount on his car
- 1:36insurance and finally now going in the right direction.
- 1:38Isn't that right, Ryan? Yeah, 30 bucks a month, which I
- 1:42know is nothing. That's a cocktail and a half,
- 1:45probably in LA if that. But but 30 bucks?
- 1:49All right. Yeah, it's 360 bucks a year if
- 1:52you're following. And, you know, it's just, I
- 1:56wasn't expecting to see that, you know, you get the, this is
- 1:59how the insurance companies do it now.
- 2:01They send you an e-mail and they say, oh, you've got, you know,
- 2:02your policy has renewed. But if you want to see what it
- 2:05was renewed at, you've got to like find your password login,
- 2:08right? And I was just so shocked to see
- 2:10that it actually gone down. And then I, I was reminded that
- 2:12I'll be turning 50 here in the next 6 months.
- 2:16And I guess it's, you know, one of the one of the few benefits
- 2:19of, of, of getting older. One of the perks.
- 2:23One of the perks. Besides the life experience and
- 2:25wisdom you've gained? I must be in the prime of my
- 2:28driving life though, right? You know, I'm, I'm the safest.
- 2:32I'm the. Less of a risk to everyone else.
- 2:35Exactly. And that's, and that's, I mean,
- 2:38it's, it's amazing. Any of us are are are here, I
- 2:40suppose. But it's, it's, yeah, I don't
- 2:42know. It's the little things.
- 2:43As you get older, it becomes the little things more and more,
- 2:45Right. Right.
- 2:48All right. So we're all going on vacation.
- 2:50There we go, Ryan's paying for the cocktails as.
- 2:52Long as Ryan St. I know, I know a place in
- 2:56Brownsville OR that we can. Here we go, you get a burger and
- 3:01a pint for 30 bucks. That's right.
- 3:03Well, now that you guys have performed there, we have an
- 3:05insider seat. I think we need to go back to
- 3:09collect those tips, don't we? I do wonder how that show went
- 3:13after we left. Yeah, I think it might have been
- 3:15worth sticking around to find out, like seeing if, you know,
- 3:18somebody didn't show up and they're like, you guys are up.
- 3:20Yeah, all right. Do you know how much alcohol
- 3:24that would require? Hey, sometimes you got to do it
- 3:26for the plot, though. You're like, you know what?
- 3:28In fact, we are the comedians. Right.
- 3:30Point me to the stage. Next time, next time the three
- 3:33of us are traveling together, Lindsay.
- 3:35Yeah, that that'll be our opportunity.
- 3:37Oh yeah. Go to the Comedy Store in LA and
- 3:40and open night night. So bad news.
- 3:43So good news, bad news, bad news.
- 3:45Today there has been a significant announcement from
- 3:48Stuttgart. And actually as a result of this
- 3:52announcement, it may push Ryan's insurance back up.
- 3:55So. So what did Porsche say?
- 3:57Porsche has announced A spokesperson from Porsche
- 4:01confirmed that the 718 came in and the boxer will cease
- 4:05production later this year. When you was coming.
- 4:09One out I you know. Yeah, well, would you like to
- 4:12know why are? They blaming tariffs because it
- 4:15seems like everyone is blaming tariffs.
- 4:17No, they are blaming cybersecurity.
- 4:21That's right. So.
- 4:23So here's the background. So on July 1st 2024 the UN
- 4:28passed regulation #155 S UNR 155 went into effect requiring or it
- 4:33went into effect then requiring automakers to integrate specific
- 4:37cybersecurity protocols in all vehicles sold at large volumes.
- 4:41Additionally, the regulation requires that automakers must
- 4:45maintain an audit ready record at each step in the development
- 4:49showing all privacy measures that were implemented.
- 4:52Porsche would have to completely reengineer the Boxer and the
- 4:55Cayman in order for these models to be in compliance with the
- 4:59regulation, which is much too costly given the timeline for
- 5:02the launch of the EV 7/18. So they yeah, like it's not
- 5:08economically viable for them to go back and completely redesign
- 5:10both of those cars. And they also can't scrap all
- 5:13the development they've invested in the EV7 eighteens.
- 5:17So unfortunately it kills those two models.
- 5:20And I, I, I take a look at my GT4 here and I think it's a
- 5:24pretty basic car, right? Like it's not like some
- 5:27technology laden thing, like, you know, a Tesla or something,
- 5:30right? But maybe that works against it
- 5:32because you can't back engineer or whatever in the same way
- 5:35either. It's.
- 5:36Yeah. Well, and I think I mean, like,
- 5:39you know, people joke about like the cars are now computers on
- 5:41wheels, but we all know how much software is in the cars at this
- 5:44point. And you know, a lot of it we
- 5:46don't see obviously. But I mean, I know when I was at
- 5:50the automotive tech company, when I was at ZEVO up here, like
- 5:54that was a big deal. We we qualified for some
- 5:57certification where we had met all the requirements.
- 5:59We were being safe with the data and that was we were just
- 6:03producing a part of it and it was a huge deal for us to
- 6:05achieve that. So to have to certify the entire
- 6:09car, you know, I can imagine and and when you think about to have
- 6:13to maintain an audit ready record that's available and
- 6:15current at any moment that could necessitate the creation of an
- 6:19entire department almost like for the company to stay in
- 6:22compliance so. Of all the things I thought
- 6:25would put the final nail in that coffin, I didn't think it was
- 6:28going to be cybersecurity. The robots are running amok,
- 6:33destroying some of our favorite. Classes so I guess so I guess.
- 6:36That's part of the question though, because a lot of the
- 6:39parts are shared, aren't they, between the 9/11 and the?
- 6:42So how is it the 9/11 meets those requirements and?
- 6:46Well. I mean, it could just be like if
- 6:49they looked at the whole landscape and they said, OK, we
- 6:52can afford to keep some, but not all.
- 6:54Yeah, like that would be my guess, especially because
- 6:58they're so far into the 718. Yeah.
- 7:01I think that 8. Years hole.
- 7:03In it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you.
- 7:04Can't, you know, to try and justify that as a company, Like
- 7:07we're just going to toss that out?
- 7:09That doesn't work either, right? Right, right.
- 7:12Despite, yeah, despite the 982 nomenclature, right, it's not
- 7:15really aligned with the 992. It's like 1/2 generation behind.
- 7:19So that was always interesting too.
- 7:21They never really. Well, another story for another
- 7:24time. I don't want this to turn into a
- 7:25Porsche podcast, but yeah. What again, going to turn into
- 7:29one. I think we're there.
- 7:31I think that is the single most common thread in the feedback we
- 7:35get that I talk too much about Porsche.
- 7:37You. Know let's go.
- 7:38I don't think good news, shall we?
- 7:40Yeah, well, do we? Can I?
- 7:42We have in the last 48 hours, we have the two other news items.
- 7:46They're both bad news, though. Aren't.
- 7:47They both bad news, so here why don't we get them out of the way
- 7:51just the briefly Honda has announced it's switching its
- 7:54focus from EVs back to hybrids and Dodge.
- 7:58There was not enough interest in the electric Charger Daytona RT,
- 8:01so Dodge has announced that will not be.
- 8:04That will not be happening either.
- 8:06And back to you with the. Good news?
- 8:07Fan surprised? Yeah, Yeah.
- 8:10These are like common sense statements, aren't they?
- 8:12It's like we we knew as consumers.
- 8:16It's just it took a while for the car companies to catch up.
- 8:18Yeah, they. Just called that car show.
- 8:20We could have saved them a lot of.
- 8:21Time right? Available for consultancy 1800
- 8:25of that car show. That's right.
- 8:27We have all the answers, yes. Back to good news.
- 8:30So by the time this podcast is out, our very good friend Jorge
- 8:36Aquino and Tormenting Tarmac will have released.
- 8:40I think we recorded it a month ago.
- 8:41Wasn't it? Even more maybe.
- 8:43It was mid-april, Yeah, some more than a month.
- 8:46So that that episode. So if you want 2 doses of us
- 8:49this week then listen to Tormenting Tarmac and yeah.
- 8:55Yeah, I think it'll be fun. I do remember at least two of us
- 8:57were very, very tired that evening.
- 8:59That said, Jorge promises that it's a fun episode, so a.
- 9:02Banger, I think a. Banger, banger.
- 9:05A banger. Yeah, that's the metric.
- 9:06If Jorge says it's a banger, that's how you know it's good.
- 9:09Not mid, right? Banger all the way.
- 9:12We only deliver banger fire. Come on, let's go.
- 9:16Yeah, yeah. So on the good news theme, I
- 9:20think we talked about this in the past about gated manual
- 9:22cars. We did.
- 9:23And I think, Lindsay, you were the only one who had driven A
- 9:27gated manual car, is that right? I think that's correct.
- 9:29I drove a friend of the show, Mark Foster's 308, and that was
- 9:33the first gated manual I had driven.
- 9:35Yeah. So now I'm the odd one out.
- 9:37Because Ryan, you lived a boyhood dream this week, didn't
- 9:40you? And.
- 9:41I did my best at at living that dream.
- 9:44Yeah, I thanks to a local friend here, Brian Rudin.
- 9:49I I was able to have my first Ferrari F355 experience and this
- 9:55my excuse was it was an Autoblog article.
- 9:57So look for that by the time this show is released, if not
- 10:00Friday, probably Monday, it'll be out.
- 10:02But I, you know, as a writer, you're always trying to sort of
- 10:06find, you know, something that that that hits right with the
- 10:09audience. And so I had this idea, why
- 10:11don't I drive the the poster cars of my youth, right?
- 10:14And that's just a great excuse to get behind the wheel of, of
- 10:17some of these things. So you heard it here first.
- 10:20I have to, it's for work. Next week he's going to be in a
- 10:23Model T Ford. Sorry.
- 10:27I see what you did there. I see what you did there.
- 10:30I'm more of a model A generation, but you know, it's.
- 10:34Yeah, actually, you know what the next car will be.
- 10:35Yeah. And and you won't, you know, I
- 10:38guess what what is? What's the.
- 10:39Yeah, you heard it here first. But he's just flexing now,
- 10:41Lindsay. Yeah, pretty much like what else
- 10:44could I? Yeah.
- 10:45Well, we'll come back to the 355, but I think next on the
- 10:49docket is a is a Lamborghini Diablo.
- 10:52So, but I have to be able to fit in it and that was a bit of a
- 10:56challenge with the 355. I learned more about 35 fives in
- 11:01the last 24 hours putting this article together and talking
- 11:04with Brian. But this was a 90 is a 95, which
- 11:08is the first year of the 355. I learned a couple things.
- 11:12The manual transmission cars, which was the only car available
- 11:15for this first few years, those are technically called the F355
- 11:19and then later they were joined by the 1st F1 cars, right?
- 11:23The the automated manual cars and those were the 355F1.
- 11:28So that's there's a distinction during the fact checking stage,
- 11:32I had to go back and make a few adjustments, but beautiful car.
- 11:35The 95 cars a little different because it was the first year
- 11:39and it was the only year of the OBD one cars.
- 11:42So for 1996, OBD 2 came in and I guess those who know like the
- 11:48the the 95 because it's got a freer flowing engine and maybe a
- 11:52little more oomph, even if it's not officially, you know that
- 11:57and. So why do they feel like that's
- 12:00the case? Like what was the difference?
- 12:01Yeah, I think there are a few detail differences.
- 12:05Maybe the seats are a little bit different.
- 12:08I think it just supposedly sounds a little bit better, you
- 12:11know, as a free or flowing, you know, engine and all that.
- 12:14Was it like a bigger? Air intake or something I think
- 12:16I think so it was it was it was it was maybe a single air take
- 12:21intake versus 2 or something that that changed the the intake
- 12:25sound I. Think is like the performance,
- 12:26yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:28And a few other little things that just, I guess, make it the
- 12:31one to have. But along with that, in an
- 12:35already small car, you get an extra small pedal box, which I
- 12:39guess was, no, you know, but the 96 cars, for whatever reason,
- 12:43they got bigger. So much like the.
- 12:46Yeah, I think that must have been it.
- 12:48You know, you these cars literally were our poster cars.
- 12:51And so they always sort of loomed larger than life.
- 12:54And you don't really think about them being as small as they are,
- 12:57especially, you know, anyone can fit in a, you know, 458 or a
- 13:01newer, you know, Ferrari, right, or especially the, you know,
- 13:04the, the front engine cars, right, They're pretty, pretty
- 13:06substantial, right vehicles. Well, you know, the 355 was in
- 13:11so many ways, the last of the old school cars, right?
- 13:13And so they're, they're, they're tiny.
- 13:15And then my friend who owns the car and he's got a whole, he's
- 13:19got like all the cool cars from we were growing up.
- 13:21So hopefully this is the beginning of a of a.
- 13:25Long and beautiful friendship. Yes, yes, yes.
- 13:29You'll have to read the article for kind of the genesis of his
- 13:32collection and all that, but. There's a good story there.
- 13:36Great story there. But The thing is we are sized
- 13:39very differently. I'm, I'm in, as I say in the air
- 13:42call, I'm an XL to his medium. And so his cars are set up for
- 13:47him. And so, well, I probably would
- 13:50have been able to fit in this car OK with the stock seats.
- 13:53He's got this car sort of set up to challenge what was the, the
- 13:57racing series, the Ferrari challenge spec, you know.
- 13:59Yeah. And, and so he's got sparkle
- 14:01racing shells, you know, so they're not adjustable.
- 14:04They probably just weren't positioned how I would have
- 14:06positioned them. So I was able to get in the
- 14:07seat. It was a little tight, but I was
- 14:10just like, I think the word is akimbo, right?
- 14:13Arms, legs slayed, you know, in every, every direction.
- 14:16Yeah. And so because of that, I didn't
- 14:18really get the driving experience that I I probably
- 14:21would have otherwise. It's gonna be remedied soon
- 14:24because one of his friends has a targa with the standard seats
- 14:29and so he he swears that I'll fit it fine, but we'll, we'll
- 14:32see. What a cool car.
- 14:33A little. Compare and contrast.
- 14:34A little compare and contrast. Yeah, you know, it's and then
- 14:37I'll just have to do a spider just to complete the set.
- 14:39But you you know the car, right? I mean, it's an icon.
- 14:43It's supposedly one of the best sounding modern Ferraris.
- 14:47I I think that's true. Everyone who's got one has some
- 14:50sort of aftermarket exhaust. A2 beer.
- 14:52Capristo. Brian's got something different,
- 14:55which isn't come to my coming to mind right now, but I guess I
- 14:58was expecting something a little more brutish, a little more
- 15:01rough. It rides amazingly well.
- 15:04It's like a sewing machine, right?
- 15:06It's just, it's, it's smooth, it's easy to drive.
- 15:09I mean, I think his car is really dialed in.
- 15:12That gated shifter. It was, it didn't add a a layer
- 15:16of difficulty or anything. It came very naturally.
- 15:19I, as we were talking about before we hit record here, I was
- 15:22very, very careful downshifting at a second because you know,
- 15:25it's about 5mm away from reverse and that's not how I want to go
- 15:30out. We're anti money shift here on
- 15:33that. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:34And of course, you know, Speaking of money, there was a
- 15:36time when these were pretty affordable Ferraris, right?
- 15:38These were fifty $60,000 cars and not that long ago and I
- 15:42think the good coop now is closer to 1A and 50 and a good
- 15:45target is even a little more. Spiders I think can still be had
- 15:48probably for 80 or 90,000 which is interesting.
- 15:51And as I mentioned the article, maybe the spider is the move for
- 15:54me. Just easier to get in and out
- 15:55of, but beautiful driving car. Just you know, everyone thinks
- 16:00it's a Testarossa, right? Does have that that sort of
- 16:02look, But Brian, which I. Love from my childhood.
- 16:06Brian says this is a much better driving car than a Testarossa,
- 16:09right. The Testarossa kind of, you
- 16:10know, lumbers around and this thing is light on its feet,
- 16:12right? Which makes sense, but didn't
- 16:15disappoint, other than it just didn't fit the damn thing very
- 16:17well. And you know, I don't know, I,
- 16:21it's, it's, it's rough out there.
- 16:24Now, granted, it's not just the height.
- 16:25If I lost 40 lbs, it'd probably fit me a lot better too.
- 16:28But the fixed. Seats might not be as much of an
- 16:32issue. No.
- 16:32Did you did you lust after this car, either of you?
- 16:34I mean, was this like for me, this was kind of the first
- 16:37modern Ferrari on the map for me, right?
- 16:38The one that. I think.
- 16:41The Testarossa. I'm a little older than you
- 16:42both. Like the Testarossa made such an
- 16:45impression on me as a kid, I was lucky to get to see one up
- 16:49close. We had a family friend's uncle
- 16:51that actually had one and so he brought it over when I was nice
- 16:54like 5th grade. And so that's kind of the one
- 16:56that you know, that. And of course, like Magnum was
- 16:59my first television show. So between that, between the
- 17:02Testa Rosa and the three O 8, like I was kind of like, you
- 17:06know, the Ferraris were sort of settled for me on those two.
- 17:09Yeah, I've not driven one, but in 2009 I did a What's the right
- 17:14word? What is it when people take a A
- 17:16journey to something sacred. A.
- 17:18Pilgrimage. Pilgrimage.
- 17:20I did a pilgrimage to Le Mon and I was Co driver in one.
- 17:24And so they mean I didn't drive it.
- 17:26I just was Co driver. A friend from work had it, but I
- 17:30the thing I remember and it'd be interesting when Ryan you drive
- 17:33the other one, it's amazing how you just remember small things
- 17:36about cars. And in this case it was how
- 17:40comfortable it was. It was the most comfortable car
- 17:43I've ever ridden in. And this is a sports car, right?
- 17:46Yeah, yeah, I I agree or agree with that statement.
- 17:50It, it seemingly rode better than my GT4 again, even the, the
- 17:54passenger was a racing shell, you know, so I was, my knees
- 17:57were up high. It didn't look too cool, but
- 18:00yeah, it was, I was expecting it to be a real flinty ride.
- 18:04You know, I, I solicited questions for tonight's show on
- 18:06Instagram and got some, got several questions around the
- 18:09355. A lot of them were around, uh,
- 18:13maintenance costs and just ownership costs.
- 18:15And that was something that I asked Brian.
- 18:18And one of the things that I think has scared a lot of people
- 18:20away from these cars in the past was this engine out, right.
- 18:23Engine out every three years. Engine out.
- 18:24It's this big deal. Whether you drive or not, you
- 18:26got to take the engine out. Yeah.
- 18:27And it sounds like that was more of a, like a, a cash grab from
- 18:31Ferrari back in the day than actual necessity.
- 18:34And that the accepted interval now is closer to seven years.
- 18:37So when you look at it seven years, Brian's like the, you
- 18:40know, the annual running cost of this thing are like $3500.
- 18:43For a Ferrari. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:46That's, you know, I would say it's probably more than, you
- 18:48know, your typical Porsche, but not by much. 10 years of savings
- 18:52from Ryan's insurance, right? That's right.
- 18:57But really, what your insurance is saying, we are paving the way
- 18:59for you to get a three. Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:02Absolutely. And if I drive this next one and
- 19:04I can fit in it, I think it's a car I'd love to own someday.
- 19:06It's just, you know, Jorge, actually Speaking of Jorge, he
- 19:11asked what was like versus the GT4 And it's similar in some
- 19:14ways because both mid engine very well balanced, very light,
- 19:17but you know, it was even a lighter, smoother experience
- 19:20than the GT4. And that's really, that's really
- 19:22saying something, but also didn't seem for you.
- 19:26Because we know how much you love the GT4.
- 19:28Love it, love it, love it. I mean, I'm sure the GT4 would
- 19:30run circles around it, around a track, whatever.
- 19:32It's just, you know, 30 years newer, right, But you know, I
- 19:35don't think it would be, you know, quite the the gulf that
- 19:38that you might, you know, think at first, right.
- 19:40And this car had a rumble big brake kit.
- 19:42It had, you know, had the challenge wheels, which are a
- 19:45little bigger, had been lowered an inch and all that's what's
- 19:47really dialed in. And guys, that sound, you know,
- 19:50if you buy it for no other reason than that sound, it is
- 19:53just I go again, go to a little I'm a little more descriptive in
- 19:56the article, but it nothing sounds like that except like,
- 19:59you know, an 8 cylinder F1 car and that's it's it's just it's
- 20:03amazing going through a tunnel. I only wish it were a little
- 20:05louder. I mean, it was just that that
- 20:08that good. It just sings, just sings.
- 20:10So very cool. So moving on, moving on.
- 20:12But it was fun. You're going to hear about the
- 20:14Diablo next time, right? In terms.
- 20:16Of. So let's go a bit more modern
- 20:18and there is a Danish supercar that I think was brought to fame
- 20:24and it was the first time I knew about it from Shmee in the UK
- 20:29because he had a partnership with one.
- 20:30But they've launched a new car in LA last weekend.
- 20:33Lindsay was that right? That's right.
- 20:35The Zenvo, it's like Zenvo 2 point O is what all the company
- 20:39representatives were describing it as, because they've they
- 20:42were. The company was founded in 2007
- 20:45and what I love is that they they say we've been producing
- 20:48Denmark's only hyper car for 15 years, which is I don't know
- 20:52that there's a lot of competition in Denmark, but
- 20:56clearly not. So the first car was called the
- 20:58St. one, but what they debuted in the US on Saturday is called
- 21:02the Aurora. And so there are two models
- 21:06publicly. They announced the Aurora in
- 21:082023, but this was like they're kind of on the US, you know,
- 21:11launch tour with two of the CART 2 versions of the Aurora, the
- 21:16agile and the tour. And those are Danish words for
- 21:20agile and touring. So they have the road going one
- 21:24and the track focused. And the launch was at Galpin
- 21:28Lotus in Beverly Hills, which is a really cool location.
- 21:32If you haven't seen like, it's worth a trip just stopping in to
- 21:35see the building because it's a really unique building and makes
- 21:39for amazing car spotting even just on the road, you know,
- 21:43around the building. And so the it's a totally new,
- 21:49you know, ground up design. It's the lightest and most
- 21:52powerful Rd. car that Zenbow has produced.
- 21:55And I was lucky enough to get to sit in the tour and the global
- 22:00director of sales, who is actually named Pushcar, showed
- 22:04me around the car and, you know, answered all my questions.
- 22:08And Galpin, you know, Beau Bachman, who runs Galpin, he
- 22:12spoke at the event. And then Zen Bo's leader Yen's,
- 22:14he also made some remarks. My favorite thing about the
- 22:20Aurora is the gauges. When you get in, you don't see
- 22:24any screens. And that was intentional.
- 22:26They wanted it to be very like driving experience focused, no
- 22:31distraction. They said we feel like the
- 22:32screens have gotten out of control.
- 22:34So they were very intentional in how they included the modern
- 22:38tech and all the features that you would expect because the
- 22:41cars start at $2.8 million. So obviously you expect them to
- 22:45have all of the features and then some.
- 22:48So you get in and it was really interesting because you never
- 22:51know, you know, some of those cars, it's not, they're not
- 22:54comfortable or it's just sort of, it's a lot.
- 22:56You know, you can have sort of sensory overload.
- 22:59This one I got in and it was like an exhale.
- 23:02It was like it was very peaceful in the cabin.
- 23:05It was laid out very well. And there are three or four
- 23:09gauges in front of you behind the steering wheel.
- 23:12And they said they're like, OK, now watch this and you push and
- 23:15hold this button and two of the gauges rotate over and that's
- 23:19where the screens are. And so you have CarPlay or
- 23:23Android Auto. So you have all the features you
- 23:24could want. You have Bluetooth, you know,
- 23:26maps, you have all the car monitoring, you know, tire
- 23:29pressure, all of that. But if you want to sort of tuck
- 23:32the tuck away and just focus on the pure driving experience, you
- 23:36flip them back, you have your standard gauges and off you go.
- 23:39Nice. So was it the McLaren P1 that
- 23:42did something like that? But it was more, it was kind of
- 23:44the opposite, right? It you would focus on like the
- 23:45racing element of the cages, right?
- 23:48So this is kind of very Danish, right?
- 23:50Like very, you know. Yeah, it's sort, it's like a no
- 23:53nonsense, you know, like they they, you know, Jens was saying
- 23:58they like to make an impact and he's like, we we pack a punch,
- 24:02but in sort of an understated package on the inside.
- 24:05But it was yeah. I was really struck by like sort
- 24:08of how calming it was just sitting in the cabin.
- 24:11The seats were comfortable, the finishes were beautiful.
- 24:14You know, there's carbon fiber everywhere.
- 24:16The the tour that they had had this really unique kind of
- 24:20rainbow oil slick paint. And then the the agile was in a
- 24:25white like Unicorn finish almost.
- 24:28And yeah, I mean, what I loved is how exposed the technology
- 24:33is. You know, when you walk around
- 24:34like the arrow and the technology and they had
- 24:36horizontal suspension and it's just it's like they're really
- 24:40works of art. And you can see the engineering
- 24:42that went into them. And I would love to drive one
- 24:45when the time comes. Well, you got to sit in one and
- 24:49you had the most baller Instagram picture ever because
- 24:53you're there. You are in this $2.8 million car
- 24:55with a a a glass of champagne. I know I was like, I don't know
- 25:00whose life this is, but I'm so happy with mine.
- 25:02I mean, listen, I had I had an amazing, you know, film crew
- 25:06there. I will say, like my friend Simon
- 25:08Trumper, who works with the brand, he's the one that
- 25:10facilitated me in the car. And that was, I didn't realize
- 25:13he was going to be there. So it was really fun to see him.
- 25:15He splits his time between Italy and Southern California, so you
- 25:19never know where he is. Where in the world is Simon?
- 25:21And then Tori Alonzo, who does, yeah, summaries for us.
- 25:25And then Derek Powell, friend of friend of the Pro, obviously.
- 25:29So yeah, between those three, I was in the car and Simon's like,
- 25:32do you want your do you want your glass?
- 25:34Because they were powering it back up so I could see the
- 25:36gauges flip. I love it.
- 25:38And then Tori got the picture. So yeah, well, like, we're glad
- 25:41that the photo op turned out the way it did because it's so
- 25:43funny. We do a big shout out to Tori
- 25:45because I don't know if anyone's everyone's aware, but you know,
- 25:49after we record each show, Tori takes time to create like a
- 25:52summary. What would you call it?
- 25:54Like a pictograph summary of the show.
- 25:57Yeah, it's sort of like highlights.
- 25:59Yeah. And he definitely has a way with
- 26:00the gifts. Yeah.
- 26:02Thank you, Tori. We really appreciate it.
- 26:04Thank. You.
- 26:05Yeah, Yeah, you do. And he does the same thing for
- 26:07Spikes Car Radio. So I feel like we're in great
- 26:09company. Thank you.
- 26:12I'm hoping to meet Tori at some point.
- 26:13He lives not terribly far from from Denver.
- 26:17And and he he's threatened to visit one of these times.
- 26:20He's he's up this way. So I look forward to that.
- 26:22And also Speaking of Spikes, Car Radio, dear Zuckerman, if you're
- 26:26listening, I, I know we're connected on Instagram at least
- 26:29I would love to turn that picture of Lindsay in the Zenvo
- 26:34with the flute of champagne. Oh my God, into a sticker.
- 26:37I, I mean, I think that is the, I don't know, that's just the
- 26:41best mic drop ever. So.
- 26:43I like Where your headband, yeah.
- 26:46I thought you were going to say give Lindsay a big Afro or
- 26:50something based on this week Spikes car radio.
- 26:52Oh, the. Yeah.
- 26:54What's his name? The the producer.
- 26:57Cameron. No, no, no, no.
- 26:59The The. The Phil Spector.
- 27:01Phil Spector? I'd forgotten about that in that
- 27:03giant Brillo pad thing on his head.
- 27:06Bizarre. Well, and like during the trial,
- 27:08the hair just kept growing. Oh my God, like his nose was
- 27:11getting longer, right, right. Like the more lies he told, the
- 27:15you know the. Pinocchio version of producer
- 27:17hair. That was wild.
- 27:19Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:19There's a he's got a gift. Yeah.
- 27:23Well, while you guys were living it up, I kind of was with the
- 27:26common people and and the cool people.
- 27:29I last the last Sunday I attended at Wagon Fest at the
- 27:32Peterson. Yeah, that's right.
- 27:33How was it? So yeah, it was great, it was
- 27:36hot and there were 300 odd wagons, which is.
- 27:40Amazing. Right, there's a lot of wagons
- 27:44come out of anyway, but no, it was great.
- 27:46So many varieties of wagons as well.
- 27:48You know, it's everything from the stance work M fives, you
- 27:54know, all the way through to Volvos.
- 27:56Saw a few Volvo 850 yards which are pretty cool.
- 28:01You don't see those anymore, right?
- 28:03Those were so new when those were new, yeah.
- 28:05And Matt Farah was there. He turned up with his toy can
- 28:09and. And that was one of the show
- 28:11cars, which was pretty cool. Yeah.
- 28:13He made the sticker or the poster or something, right?
- 28:15He did? Yeah.
- 28:16It was a sticker and it's new. What?
- 28:18HRE Wheels. Yeah, they look pretty sweet
- 28:20actually. They really do.
- 28:21I got to see it at Air Water I think right after they were put
- 28:24on and it looks so good. Yeah, it's.
- 28:28Holstar gave you some of those just.
- 28:32HRE Hello. Yeah.
- 28:34Yes. Hello HRE.
- 28:36I to take your call. What was your what were your top
- 28:40three favorite wagons at the event, Dan?
- 28:43Someone turned up really early on with the E46M3 wagon so I
- 28:48think it was a cars and bits car.
- 28:52Is that the one like they put it together?
- 28:55It's like a tribute to the E port.
- 28:56Yeah. Because they didn't make the
- 28:57wagon, right? Yeah.
- 28:59Yeah, so that. Is it silver?
- 29:02Yes. OK, I've seen that one.
- 29:03It's cool. Yeah.
- 29:04And I do have to have. Cars and bits car I'm not sure
- 29:07but they changed the number plate while they were there, so
- 29:10put a cars and bits number plate on it.
- 29:12Fresh off the bat, huh? Yeah.
- 29:15So that was there and that was really cool.
- 29:19The the Peterson had a classic car wagon, which I thought was
- 29:23pretty cool and I can't remember the name of it.
- 29:25I know what it wasn't. It wasn't a Safari because
- 29:27everyone was calling it a Safari and it wasn't a Safari, but it
- 29:30was a super old classic. Like an American.
- 29:33Yeah, yeah, Americana. Country Squire.
- 29:37Yeah, yeah, whatever in the. Country or?
- 29:39Some meteor or something I can't.
- 29:41Remember, I'm interested that was.
- 29:43Yeah, it was good to see Adam and Chrissy and, you know, the
- 29:46team. There was literally a line
- 29:49around the block for people to to get the T-shirts and you
- 29:52know, all that sort of good stuff.
- 29:53Well, they always do such a great job with their branding
- 29:55and their swag and yeah, I mean they really do top of the heap.
- 29:58Can I ask you a quick question about the wagon?
- 30:00So everyone always says everything always looks better
- 30:02as a wagon. Did you see anything that would
- 30:04have been better headed state of sedan or a coupe or I don't
- 30:09throw anyone under the bus but. Yeah, no, I I didn't.
- 30:12I saw lots of Japanese cars that I weren't I wasn't familiar with
- 30:16because we. Didn't get them.
- 30:18I don't know the names of them, but they were square 80s
- 30:21Japanese cars that were wagons, which we never got in the UK so
- 30:24I could. You tell had they like were they
- 30:29cars that came here because I don't particularly remember a
- 30:32ton of those or they people had imported.
- 30:34Imported. I don't know, maybe imported it,
- 30:36but it seemed like the floor, the top floor, but we was mostly
- 30:40Audi. Yeah, in.
- 30:42One track, yeah. In one corner there was a GT4
- 30:47Luso that looked pretty cool. I thought that's the way to turn
- 30:50up in a wagon. Isn't it?
- 30:51Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the mic drop wagon.
- 30:55Well, I think what you're saying, Dan, is everything looks
- 30:56better as a wagon. Yeah, that's what I heard, yeah.
- 31:00Maybe yeah, it's I didn't dare bring the SQ5IN because I just
- 31:04thought it's not a wagon, don't try.
- 31:08No, it's. You're waiting for Crossover
- 31:12Fest. Yes, But an interesting story,
- 31:15Ryan. I swapped the wheels on it and
- 31:17I'm going on Monday to get the brakes changed, but the rear
- 31:20pads and brakes, the rear rotors are warped.
- 31:24So thank you. For trying that down safely?
- 31:29No way. At the 55 miles an hour we drove
- 31:32from Seattle to tell him that it happened on my watch.
- 31:35No, I'm not blaming you in any way.
- 31:36Jake perform. It's definitely that they needed
- 31:38to replace him, so thanks for getting it down safely.
- 31:40Yeah, no, no, I'm glad you're getting that taken care of.
- 31:43So the next time I drive it, I'll I'll I'll.
- 31:46Be on top next time. That's hilarious.
- 31:48You're in the shop. I'm going to make a quick phone
- 31:50call. Get my.
- 31:52Friend's credit card information.
- 31:54Yeah. Dan, you've been an Angelino now
- 31:56for a full week. How does it?
- 31:57Feel it's great. The weather is so much better
- 32:01than Seattle. Sorry, Lindsay, I know that you
- 32:02split your time. So yeah, the weather's great.
- 32:05I I've been working hard, so I haven't seen a lot of a lot of
- 32:09daylight, but yeah, I, I did read where I'm living.
- 32:13There's a rooftop and I got hold of the latest copy of Magneto.
- 32:18And if you guys aren't familiar with it, it's a really high end
- 32:21print magazine with lots of articles.
- 32:24And this may do a summer edition and the summer edition is
- 32:28focused on Formula One. But it's been done in such a
- 32:31good way that it's not like if you don't like Formula One,
- 32:34you're not going to be able to read this thing.
- 32:36But our good friend Bassem has got an article in there and it's
- 32:40all about a the Ferrari F50. They went to take it racing and
- 32:46they built prototypes and these cars are like they were almost
- 32:51comparing it to the 250 GTO in terms of how rare and how you
- 32:54know how special they are. So if you get a chance to see
- 32:58the magazine and grab a couple. Absolutely Congrats to bathroom.
- 33:01That guy gets around that's. Pretty rarefied error where
- 33:04they're like how what they're really the only comparison is a
- 33:06250 GTO. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:09That's awesome. That's awesome.
- 33:11Do you subscribe or was this? I managed to find a code.
- 33:14OK, manager. OK.
- 33:15Yeah, yeah. He's got the hook up, he knows
- 33:17the guy, so. Lucky, yeah, yeah.
- 33:19Awesome. That's.
- 33:20A good recommendation, yeah. More We need more poolside
- 33:23pictures of you. That's the last thing you want.
- 33:27Oh, come on, you get embrace, embrace your new, your new
- 33:31hometown, you know, Yeah. It's no, it's, it's a great
- 33:34city. So Bassam's articles in Magneto
- 33:36and Ryan, your next article's coming out tomorrow.
- 33:38You think? In Autoblog.
- 33:40Not quite the same, but hey. You both wrote articles. 1000
- 33:46words for 355. The 944 of the Ferrari world,
- 33:51that is, one of the commenters earlier tonight told me, which
- 33:54was. A It's a joke.
- 33:56Oh, Dad, I. Yeah, no, it's a great car.
- 33:59Not enough. Not enough 50, but but I am not.
- 34:01Also not Bassam. So now you know.
- 34:04Not yet. Yeah, moving on.
- 34:08I know. Yeah, what's next?
- 34:12So I think there was some stuff around Shelby, wasn't there,
- 34:15Lindsay. Yes, Saturday was a big day.
- 34:18Saturday was very emblematic. I'm exhausted, but I'm happy to
- 34:23be here. Saturday was very emblematic of
- 34:26the Southern California car scene because there was an event
- 34:30in Irvine. It was the Carroll Shelby
- 34:32Tribute that they do every year, Team Shelby does.
- 34:35And this year it was celebrating 60 years of the GT350.
- 34:38And there's a venue in Irvine called the Segerstrom Shelby
- 34:42Event Center. And it's a private collection,
- 34:44but they've put together basically a museum, but you but
- 34:48it's an event venue also. And so they opened up the museum
- 34:51and they actually were able to close a couple streets, which is
- 34:54no small feat in Irvine. And they had 150 cars and Aaron
- 34:59Shelby was there. Vince Laviolette, who's been the
- 35:01chief designer for Shelby American for 24 years.
- 35:05Pat Bondurant, who's Bob Bondurant's widow from the
- 35:08Bondurant School in Arizona. And she's very, you know, active
- 35:11in the community. And but it was funny because on
- 35:14the way there, we were waiting to turn and all of a sudden
- 35:17there were Mclarens and Lambos coming at us on the Main Street.
- 35:20And we're like, what's going on? And then again, my friend Simon,
- 35:22who was at the Zenvo event, he was apparently at the Shelby
- 35:25event. And we totally missed each
- 35:26other. But he said, yeah, I came from
- 35:28the McLaren event, then went to the Shelby event, then went to
- 35:31Zenvo. And yeah, so there were 150
- 35:36cars. One of the cars that were this,
- 35:38that was really cool was they did a Knight Rider reboot in
- 35:412008, 2009. And so Cinema Vehicle Services,
- 35:45which has built a lot of the movie cars for, you know, the
- 35:47last few decades, they actually built, it was a Mustang that
- 35:51they built the new Knight Rider. So that car was there.
- 35:54And then the Segrestrips have quite a collection of Ford and
- 35:57Shelby Mustangs and then Cobra tributes.
- 36:01My favorite part of it was that I actually got to drive one of
- 36:04the 289 Cobras. Oh, finally.
- 36:07To move it. Yeah.
- 36:08So it's the one that I drove. Oh.
- 36:09It is OK. That's right.
- 36:10That's right. But because when I drove it last
- 36:13June, I caught the bug. So when I heard that they were
- 36:15moving it, even though it was just like a matter of yards, I'm
- 36:18like, yes, I'm ready. I love it.
- 36:20I love it. Hoping in.
- 36:21It's the. It's the.
- 36:23It's the 427 that you still need to.
- 36:25Yeah, that one I have not driven.
- 36:26Yet. OK.
- 36:27All right. I mean, I want to try it.
- 36:29I love the 280. Nine Yeah, I do too.
- 36:31I'm just, there's something about it that and and and from
- 36:35people who have owned both, I've heard the same thing, so.
- 36:38I have too. And I, I'm surprised, you know,
- 36:40a lot of a lot of times in America, we always say bigger is
- 36:43better, but the 289, it's like the proportions are so good.
- 36:48And, you know, obviously I will do my research and drive the
- 36:51427, but just the driving experience of the 289, it's
- 36:55just, it's like perfectly sized, you know, I mean, I, when I
- 37:00drove it last June, I was like 30 seconds into it.
- 37:03And in my head I went, I get it. And I'm like, yeah.
- 37:07And then I and then I said to myself like, well if I never go
- 37:10to the track again, this is fine as long as I can do this every
- 37:13Saturday. Nice.
- 37:16It's good. It's a sweet life.
- 37:18I could do a lot worse. You know, yeah, yeah, you talked
- 37:21about Bondaron, the school which is now called Radford, right?
- 37:25So I'm heading out there in the middle of June for two days
- 37:29driver training. I believe I'm being told I have
- 37:32to go and do 2 days driver training where you learn car
- 37:37control and all that sort of good stuff.
- 37:39Yeah, how to deal with ABS and, you know, all those breaks and
- 37:42stuff. So yeah, looking forward to
- 37:44that, although it might be quite hot in it's going.
- 37:48To be warm in Arizona. Yes, Arizona, but hopefully I'm
- 37:52going to catch up with Jorge as well, yeah.
- 37:53Oh fun, I hope so. Well, I look forward to hearing
- 37:57what your experience is. I haven't been to Bondurant or
- 38:00you know, Radford now, obviously, but I've heard it's
- 38:03so much fun. I know people that went a couple
- 38:07years ago and they had so much fun.
- 38:08They ended up adding more days while they were there.
- 38:10Wow. That's saying something, right?
- 38:12Like, I mean, sometimes you're so exhausted that you don't, you
- 38:15know? Right.
- 38:16Yeah. Or it's like the track.
- 38:18You don't, you don't click with the track or, you know, who
- 38:21knows? But yeah, I've, I've heard it's
- 38:23amazing. So I'm excited for you to
- 38:24experience it and you can bring it back and share it with the
- 38:26rest of us. Absolutely.
- 38:27Very cool. You know what's going to happen,
- 38:29Lindsay, is, is we're just going to be hanging out at home one
- 38:32night, me here in Denver and you on the West Coast.
- 38:35Wherever I am, the phone's going to ring, and it's going to be
- 38:37Dan and Jorge on speakerphone. Drunk.
- 38:43Hey can you get a cheap flight? Love you guys right?
- 38:47I love. It hopefully on FaceTime so we
- 38:49can fully appreciate whatever. Shenanigans for going on, of
- 38:52course. Yeah, Oh, hey, I'm coming.
- 38:56Get ready, start training now. Absolutely.
- 38:59How is everyone's weekends looking?
- 39:00Let's. See, I think it's going to be
- 39:03more sort of Memorial Day BBQ focused rather than car stuff.
- 39:06But you know, stuff always pops up, right?
- 39:09What about your face? I've got a car thing.
- 39:12Shout out to our friends at Avance again.
- 39:14We of course have a chapter of Avance here in Denver.
- 39:17Yeah, led by Abel Fong. And they've got an event at the
- 39:22Discount Tire in Littleton, Co Discount Tire is now a partner
- 39:26of Avance. And I think all members get 10%
- 39:29off. And if you're in town or
- 39:31anywhere near here, show, show up.
- 39:32I'll be there. A lot of our friends will be
- 39:33there. Friends of the Show and also
- 39:35they're giving away a $500 Discount Tire gift card to
- 39:40someone in attendance. So if you need tires for spring,
- 39:42whoa, this is this is probably not a bad, bad move.
- 39:47So you can see there. Dan McGuinness with you.
- 39:49Yeah, this is our friend who kind of seems to win every.
- 39:54Yes, yes, everything. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:01I yeah, or or I'll come and maybe some of that will rub off
- 40:04on the rest of us, but right. Might look a little funny if I
- 40:07won the thing, though, right? So I.
- 40:09Mean that'd be that'd be a good story.
- 40:11I know. Yeah, I love that.
- 40:12Nice. It'd be nice.
- 40:13I love that Dan is known as, like we all introduced him as.
- 40:16Do you remember that guy that won the GT4?
- 40:19Right. Mr. Lucky Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 40:23yeah. So funny, I know.
- 40:25Yeah. It's funny how that GT.
- 40:27That's right, because that was the day that I met Derek Powell.
- 40:30And then we forgot about each other and Dan won the GT4 and it
- 40:34was Matt's watch party. There was a lot going on that
- 40:36day, too. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:41You know, and he's doing the Colorado Grand this year, which
- 40:44will be fun in his Alfa Romeo. What's the name?
- 40:49Speciality. No, no, it's that thing that I
- 40:52can't. It's it's, it's a yeah, it's
- 40:54something I couldn't fit in. And that video that he's, he's
- 40:58running that in the grand this year.
- 40:59So Alfa Romeo too small for Ryan?
- 41:02Yeah, that's exactly what it is. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:06Could have used a little olio to fit in that one, but yeah,
- 41:12starting to hear a lot about the grand because I think the people
- 41:16that have been, uh, approved or accepted or have found out now.
- 41:20So that means that I will be getting a spreadsheet full of
- 41:25all the card descriptions in the coming couple of weeks so I can
- 41:28start writing the entries for the book.
- 41:32Very. Fun.
- 41:33So yeah, because you handle is it the route book, but it also
- 41:37includes background on all the cars.
- 41:39Yeah, I do the car part, someone else does the actual route
- 41:41descriptions and it's a lot of work, a lot of volunteer
- 41:44everything, but it's always a great read.
- 41:45It's always really well put together and I always learn a
- 41:47lot too. Each year it's a little easier
- 41:49as I learned more and more about the cars, but yeah, it's going
- 41:51to be a good one. A lot of friends in it this year
- 41:54so. That's awesome.
- 41:55I know. It's such a such a cool event
- 41:57and hopefully there's some way for Dan and I to even like pop
- 42:00in and. Check.
- 42:00I know you have to. You have to.
- 42:03Yeah. I mean, September, you know,
- 42:05we'll be here before we know. It so yeah, well and there's we
- 42:08still have car week in between now and then.
- 42:10Oh God, we have some talking to do guys.
- 42:12It's. Schmoozing and some convincing
- 42:16haven't. We.
- 42:19But we're available to do podcasts at Car Week if anyone's
- 42:21listening. You know.
- 42:22That's true. True.
- 42:23That's very true. Yeah.
- 42:25We can do some that car show live.
- 42:28Yeah, yeah, yeah. If you're listening Bentley or
- 42:31yeah, I know Zenvo or yeah, you know, we're we're available to
- 42:36help, you know, really bring a better experience to you.
- 42:39How do you differentiate? Absolutely.
- 42:41Any other comment? Well, they don't have a podcast,
- 42:43do they? Right, right.
- 42:44It's all about the experiential. And you know truly, what's more
- 42:47experiential than three? We're going to bring that car
- 42:51show flavor to your brand. Exactly.
- 42:53Exactly. Elevate it to the next level.
- 42:56Speaking of experiential and what sort of good stuff, I know
- 43:00we've been asking our audience to let us know who they think we
- 43:04should have on the show. And I just want to say let's
- 43:06keep that coming because it's bringing ideas to the three of
- 43:09us that we haven't thought about.
- 43:11So yeah, it's and I think we're going to have a few more guests
- 43:14over the next few weeks. It's going to be exciting.
- 43:16Yeah, we are. So stay tuned.
- 43:17Yeah, yeah, got some good ones for sure.
- 43:19There's always end up being like such fun, right?
- 43:22You know, they're, they're not interviews, right?
- 43:24I, I know some, some types of people I don't want to listen to
- 43:26the guest episodes of whatever podcast, right, Because it
- 43:28becomes in here, they're in interviews.
- 43:30This is just, you know, this is like another enthusiast just
- 43:32hanging out with us and having fun.
- 43:34It's just more time with friends or getting to know people that
- 43:37we've met that we haven't had time with and just, yeah, it's
- 43:40just, it's more of this just with a guest.
- 43:42That's right, yeah. They tend to be really cool
- 43:44people too. Which is.
- 43:45Well, I mean, they know us. Come on.
- 43:47That's. Right, Anything else, gang, that
- 43:51we wanted to talk about tonight? Man, I think.
- 43:54This is a short show, but I I know we're.
- 43:58All we're just getting efficient.
- 44:00That's sharing everything. That's, that's right.
- 44:02Well, I hope to see you at Littleton Co at Discount Tire
- 44:06Saturday morning and if you have any questions, DM me on
- 44:10Instagram or go to Avon's Denver on their website.
- 44:14So. That's awesome.
- 44:15It'll be fun. You'll have to tell us about it
- 44:17next week. Absolutely.
- 44:19Yeah, he's going to give us the phrase.
- 44:22Ryan, you want to take it this? Week phrase that pays.
- 44:27Yeah. All right.
- 44:27Well, hey. Check in.
- 44:32But sorry, by the way, that intro you did last week, Dan was
- 44:35epic. So if you haven't gone back and
- 44:36listened to last week's show, you need to listen to it just
- 44:38for for Dan's intro. But.
- 44:42Yeah, it was like, just let me clarify that for a minute.
- 44:44It's like, let's do a test run, then we'll record it.
- 44:47And you bastards screwed me out of that.
- 44:52I'd like to note I have nothing to do with the editing of the
- 44:54show. That's.
- 44:54Exactly, Ryan. And I think it's your turn
- 44:57tonight, Lindsay, by the way, to do the intro for this.
- 45:00Don't don't listen to him when he says do the test run.
- 45:03Right. This is like that episode of I
- 45:04Love Lucy where they're like ha ha ha, don't tell her we're
- 45:06actually live. Can you imagine back then we did
- 45:10everything was just live right. You know, editing wasn't an
- 45:12option. But anyway, all right, let me
- 45:14see if I can remember our our phrase.
- 45:17We're that car show and until next week, always be driving.
- 45:21I'm Ryan in Denver. I'm Lindsay in Seattle.
- 45:24I'm Dan in Los Angeles. Look.
- 45:26At that and we'll see you next week.
- 45:29Night.
