- 4:09So stop, ladies and gentlemen, letting people decide
- 4:12your worth.
- 4:13Enough is enough.
- 4:14Series 5, show 43, episode 2.
- 4:17This is Sunday.
- 4:17Hey, everyone, I'm John C.
- 4:19Morley.
- 4:19I'm a serial entrepreneur.
- 4:21I'm an engineer.
- 4:22I'm a marketing specialist.
- 4:22I'm a video producer.
- 4:23I'm a podcast host coach.
- 4:24I'm a professional keynote speaker.
- 4:26I'm a graduate student at Montclair State University.
- 4:29I'm a passionate lifelong learner.
- 4:31And now I'm so grateful to be, yes,
- 4:33ladies and gentlemen, a published author.
- 4:35Have you ever allowed someone else's opinion to
- 4:38make you question your worth?
- 4:40I'm sure you have.
- 4:42Maybe they criticized your choices, ignored your accomplishments,
- 4:47or maybe even made you feel like you
- 4:50weren't good enough for what you were doing.
- 4:52Today, I'm changing all that with a different
- 4:57kind of conversation.
- 4:58Your value isn't something other people get to
- 5:02vote on.
- 5:02I'm just being truthful.
- 5:04Let's explore this together, all right?
- 5:05I got 30 ways that we can build
- 5:07genuine self-respect.
- 5:10And, you know, if we don't have respect
- 5:11for ourself, how can we ever expect others
- 5:15to have respect in us?
- 5:17Number one, guys, understand that your worth is
- 5:21not determined by someone else's opinion.
- 5:24It's an opinion.
- 5:25That's it.
- 5:26People see you through their own experiences, their
- 5:30own lenses, basically, perceptions, expectations, and limitations.
- 5:35And their judgments may contain useful information, but
- 5:38they aren't the final authority on who you
- 5:41are.
- 5:42Listen thoughtfully without surrendering your identity.
- 5:49Number two, stop confusing popularity with personal value.
- 5:55Attention isn't the same as significance.
- 5:59Having followers recognized or influential connections doesn't automatically
- 6:04make someone more valuable.
- 6:06Your integrity and contributions matter.
- 6:09And whether you're standing before a crowd or
- 6:14working quietly, it's still important to recognize you
- 6:17have value.
- 6:18When you start treating yourself with value, other
- 6:21people will start treating yourself with value and
- 6:23respect.
- 6:24Number three, recognize the difference between confidence and
- 6:28arrogance.
- 6:29Yeah, so many people get this wrong.
- 6:31Confidence says I have something meaningful to contribute
- 6:34and share with you.
- 6:36Arrogance says I'm better than everyone else.
- 6:39You've certainly heard that before.
- 6:42Genuine confidence allows you to respect your abilities
- 6:45while remaining open to learning and respecting others.
- 6:50Too many people have this macho opinion that,
- 6:53oh, I'm better than you.
- 6:55And they're really not.
- 6:56Number four, stop measuring yourself against someone else's
- 7:01achievements.
- 7:01And I think that's hard for a lot
- 7:03of people because you've been, well, conditioned to
- 7:06do this.
- 7:06Friends, family, parents, they've conditioned you to do
- 7:09this.
- 7:09You don't know every challenge, sacrifice, or advantage
- 7:13behind another person's success.
- 7:16Their progress isn't a measurement of your potential.
- 7:20Focus on becoming better than you were yesterday.
- 7:25Number five, understand that your own character matters
- 7:29more than your status.
- 7:31We've said before that your character gets built
- 7:36in private, but it funnels into the reputation,
- 7:39which is what people see in public.
- 7:41Titles, recognition, and financial success can change.
- 7:46Your honesty, dependability, and treatment of others reveals
- 7:51something deeper.
- 7:53Build a reputation grounded in principles rather than
- 7:56just appearances.
- 7:57Number six, recognize the qualities that make your
- 8:01contributions meaningful.
- 8:03Maybe you solve problems.
- 8:07Hopefully, you listen carefully.
- 8:08You encourage people or bring stability during difficult
- 8:13situations.
- 8:14Those abilities create value.
- 8:16Don't overlook them simply because, well, they aren't
- 8:20always celebrated publicly.
- 8:23They may be later, but don't think just
- 8:25because they aren't now doesn't mean you should
- 8:27not be celebrating them.
- 8:29Number seven, stop seeking validation from people who
- 8:32constantly move the goalposts.
- 8:35You've got someone that you think is great,
- 8:38but they keep moving your goals.
- 8:41That's not their right to move the goals.
- 8:43Some people change their expectations every time you
- 8:46succeed.
- 8:47That's unfair.
- 8:48If your confidence depends on satisfying them, you'll
- 8:52remain exhausted and eventually burn out.
- 8:55Establish reasonable standards and recognize when you've genuinely
- 9:00met them.
- 9:02Number eight, guys, understand that mistakes do not
- 9:07erase your potential.
- 9:09That's really key.
- 9:11Making a poor decision doesn't mean you're incapable.
- 9:15A mistake is something to examine, learn from,
- 9:19and correct.
- 9:21Accountability should help you grow, not convince you
- 9:25that your future is finished or over.
- 9:29Number nine, please, ladies and gentlemen, recognize when
- 9:33rejection is affecting your self-image.
- 9:36A rejected proposal, relationship, or opportunity can hurt.
- 9:40But rejection often reflects circumstances, timing, or compatibility.
- 9:44Don't transform one disappointing outcome into a permanent
- 9:48judgment about yourself.
- 9:50For example, you might have had a rift
- 9:52with a family.
- 9:53It may be been separated for 10 or
- 9:5515 years.
- 9:56And you feel like you're not really part
- 9:59of them.
- 9:59Or maybe a friend is alienating you because,
- 10:03well, you're not acting like the cool kids
- 10:07do.
- 10:08Number 10, guys, stop allowing criticism to become
- 10:13your personal identity.
- 10:16Someone may criticize something you've done.
- 10:18So what?
- 10:20That doesn't mean their criticism defines everything you
- 10:23are.
- 10:24It most certainly does not.
- 10:26Evaluate the specific concern.
- 10:30Make improvements where appropriate.
- 10:33And leave unnecessary labels behind.
- 10:36I think when we add labels, it causes
- 10:39lots of stereotypes.
- 10:41Lots of bad feelings pop up.
- 10:44And it really just doesn't help anybody.
- 10:46Number 11, learn to appreciate strengths that others
- 10:51may overlook.
- 10:52Patience, consistency, empathy, and reliability aren't always attention
- 10:59grabbing.
- 11:00Let's be honest.
- 11:01Yet they can make an enormous difference.
- 11:05Recognize the strengths you demonstrate even when nobody
- 11:09stops to compliment you.
- 11:11I know you're looking for the pat on
- 11:12the back.
- 11:13I know you're looking for the praise.
- 11:15Get over it.
- 11:17Get over it.
- 11:19Number 12, recognize the value of your time,
- 11:22knowledge, and your experience.
- 11:24And when you do this, other people will
- 11:26recognize it.
- 11:27Your time is limited.
- 11:29And your experience was developed through effort.
- 11:32You can be generous without treating your resources
- 11:35as worthless.
- 11:37Choose commitments that respect your responsibilities and priorities.
- 11:42Number 13, stop apologizing for having reasonable needs.
- 11:51Needing rest, personal space, fair treatment, or time
- 11:57to think doesn't make you selfish, guys.
- 12:00Communicate your needs respectfully and clearly.
- 12:03You can consider others without constantly placing yourself
- 12:06last.
- 12:07Number 14, understand that respect begins with how
- 12:14you treat yourself.
- 12:15If you don't treat yourself well, no one
- 12:18else is going to treat or respect you
- 12:20at all.
- 12:20Notice the promise you make to yourself, the
- 12:24boundaries you maintain, and the language you use
- 12:27internally.
- 12:28Self-respect grows when your everyday choices reflect
- 12:34the importance you place on your well-being.
- 12:38Number 15, recognize when you are minimizing your
- 12:41accomplishments.
- 12:42When someone praises your work, do you immediately
- 12:45dismiss it?
- 12:47Practice acknowledging effort and progress without exaggeration.
- 12:51You don't have to pretend your accomplishments were
- 12:54insignificant to remain humble.
- 12:57Of course not.
- 12:58Number 16, guys, stop confusing humility with putting
- 13:03yourself down.
- 13:04Too many people I know do this.
- 13:05And they think, well, if I put myself
- 13:07down, that's humility.
- 13:08No, that's stupid.
- 13:10I think that's a very important thing.
- 13:14And it's a problem.
- 13:16It begins by recognizing that you can always
- 13:19learn.
- 13:20It doesn't require denying your abilities.
- 13:22You can appreciate your strengths, celebrate progress, and
- 13:25still recognize the contributions of other people.
- 13:30Number 17, build confidence through preparation and constant
- 13:35action.
- 13:36Confidence becomes stronger when you have evidence of
- 13:39your capabilities.
- 13:41Practice your skills, prepare thoroughly, and follow through
- 13:45on commitments.
- 13:47Each completed action gives you another reason to
- 13:51trust yourself.
- 13:52You really should trust yourself.
- 13:54Number 18, understand that your value does not
- 13:58disappear during difficult times.
- 14:01Financial pressure, disappointment, illness, or uncertainty may change
- 14:05your circumstances.
- 14:07They don't eliminate your humanity or your true
- 14:11potential.
- 14:12Give yourself permission to free challenges without questioning
- 14:17your entire worth.
- 14:18And I think that's hard for, again, a
- 14:21lot of people to understand.
- 14:24But I wanna be truthful to you that
- 14:25you can make this difference.
- 14:27You can have a better and bigger net
- 14:30worth, but you first gotta believe in who
- 14:32the heck you are and what you're doing.
- 14:34Because if you don't do this, you're gonna
- 14:35be like, I'm never gonna go anywhere.
- 14:38And I think that's a problem for a
- 14:40lot of people.
- 14:40It's like, well, you know, I'm just gonna
- 14:42be nothing.
- 14:44Number 19, recognize the difference between constructive feedback
- 14:49and personal attacks.
- 14:51Well, he's just trying to help me.
- 14:52She's just trying to help me.
- 14:53No, they're trying to put you down and
- 14:55kick you.
- 14:57Constructive feedback identifies something specific you can improve.
- 15:02Personal attacks target your dignity or identity.
- 15:06Let's say this again.
- 15:07So constructive feedback identifies something that you can
- 15:10improve and the person wants you to improve.
- 15:12But an attack targets your dignity or your
- 15:15identity of who you are.
- 15:17Learn from useful observations while refusing to accept
- 15:20disrespect as a requirement for growth.
- 15:23That's the key.
- 15:24Stop comparing your private struggles with someone else's
- 15:28public success.
- 15:29You see, you see your own doubts, okay?
- 15:34Setbacks and unfinished work.
- 15:37It's a fact.
- 15:38You usually see only selected highlights from others
- 15:42that comparison is incomplete.
- 15:45Measure your journey and using the honest information
- 15:49about your own progress, then make the decisions.
- 15:53Number 21, guys, number 21.
- 15:58Please learn to acknowledge your progress without needing
- 16:01applause.
- 16:02I know everybody wants an applause.
- 16:04Everybody wants a pat on the back.
- 16:06Everybody wants to be in the spotlight, but
- 16:08you don't have to be to grow.
- 16:11Not every meaningful improvement receives public recognition, nor
- 16:15does it need it.
- 16:16Maybe you handled a difficult conversation better or
- 16:20kept a promise during a challenging week.
- 16:23Don't expect that to be on a billboard.
- 16:25Notice those victories.
- 16:28Quiet progress still counts, even though you might
- 16:31not think it does, it actually does.
- 16:35Number 22, recognize how healthy relationships reinforce mutual
- 16:40respect.
- 16:41Strong relationships allow people to express needs, disagree
- 16:46respectfully and support one another's development.
- 16:50You should have your rights and you shouldn't
- 16:54have to abandon your identity to maintain a
- 16:56connection and respect must work in both directions.
- 17:00If it doesn't, there's a serious problem.
- 17:03Number 23, guys, stop accepting disrespect simply to
- 17:07maintain approval.
- 17:09I know so many people do this.
- 17:10Oh, well, I got to respect this person
- 17:11because I'll get fired.
- 17:13So maybe you shouldn't get fired.
- 17:15Maybe you should work somewhere else.
- 17:17If you're selling yourself out to being something
- 17:20you're not, you shouldn't be working for that
- 17:21company.
- 17:22It's going to be stressful.
- 17:24So fear of losing someone's approval can make
- 17:27unhealthy treatment seem acceptable.
- 17:30You can establish boundaries calmly and firmly, protect
- 17:33your dignity.
- 17:34It doesn't require attacking anyone else's.
- 17:37That's the key, guys.
- 17:39Number 24, understand that meaningful contribution takes many
- 17:43different forms and turns.
- 17:45Some people lead organizations, others mentor, create, care
- 17:53for family or solve everyday problems.
- 17:57Contribution isn't limited to public achievements.
- 18:01Recognize the difference your actions make in the
- 18:05lives around you.
- 18:07Again, it's all about that awareness.
- 18:08It's all about becoming in the moment.
- 18:14Number 25, guys, recognize the importance of keeping
- 18:18promises to yourself.
- 18:20Every commitment you honor today and in the
- 18:23future strengthens personal trust.
- 18:25Start with achievable promises and follow through consistently.
- 18:31See, when you do this, you start to
- 18:33build your character, which also builds your trust,
- 18:36which is what people see.
- 18:37When you treat your own words seriously, you
- 18:41reinforce the belief your priorities matter and other
- 18:45people will start to see it too.
- 18:47Number 26, stop allowing temporary circumstances to define
- 18:55permanent work.
- 18:56I see this day in and day out.
- 18:58A difficult season isn't your entire story, guys.
- 19:02No.
- 19:03Your current position may reflect challenges you're still
- 19:07working through.
- 19:08Keep making responsible choices rather than assuming today's
- 19:13circumstances determine tomorrow's possibilities.
- 19:17Number 27, build a stronger relationship with your
- 19:21own values.
- 19:23Identify the principles you want guiding your decisions.
- 19:28Maybe honesty, kindness, responsibility or lifelong learning matters
- 19:33most.
- 19:35When you choose to align with those values,
- 19:40the core values inside you, not someone else's,
- 19:43outset approval becomes less controlling and suddenly unnecessary.
- 19:50I think that might change what's gonna keep
- 19:54you going.
- 19:55Number 28, identify one strength you have not
- 20:02been giving yourself credit for.
- 20:04Take a moment and name something you consistently
- 20:08do well.
- 20:09Perhaps you're persistent, creative, compassionate or dependable.
- 20:14Don't dismiss it because it comes naturally.
- 20:18Your strengths deserve honest recognition.
- 20:20So why not start treating yourself like that?
- 20:23Number 29, choose one action that demonstrates healthy
- 20:32self-respect.
- 20:34Maybe you'll establish a boundary, complete a postponed
- 20:37goal or make time for an important personal
- 20:42need.
- 20:43Choose something practical.
- 20:46Self-respect becomes meaningful when you demonstrate it
- 20:50through actions that you take in your life.
- 20:53Number 30, know your worth without needing everyone
- 20:58else to confirm it.
- 21:00You can welcome appreciation without depending on it.
- 21:03You can learn from criticism without becoming defined
- 21:07by it.
- 21:08Your goal isn't universal approval.
- 21:10It's living with true integrity, confidence and respect
- 21:15for yourself and others.
- 21:19I know that sounds hard.
- 21:21It's not.
- 21:23So here's my closing challenge for you today
- 21:26on Sunday.
- 21:27Write down three, that's right, three strengths or
- 21:31qualities you genuinely value about yourself right now.
- 21:36Choose one and put it into action today
- 21:39without seeking anyone else's approval because you don't
- 21:43need anybody else's approval.
- 21:45Remember, ladies and gentlemen, knowing your worth doesn't
- 21:50mean you stop growing.
- 21:53What it does mean is you stop treating
- 21:57your value as something other people get to
- 22:00decide.
- 22:02They don't have that right.
- 22:05And I think when you start realizing that
- 22:07your value is worthy and that your life
- 22:10doesn't make its pivots or choices or changes
- 22:14based on the direct or indirect manipulation of
- 22:19other people, because most people will be doing
- 22:22it for their own wellbeing and they don't
- 22:24care about your wellbeing.
- 22:25I mean, I'm just being honest with you
- 22:26guys, right?
- 22:28So you gotta remember that.
- 22:31Your worth doesn't mean you stop growing.
- 22:33And it means you've got to stop taking
- 22:36the nonsense about how other people decide how
- 22:40your life's gonna go.
- 22:40Ladies and gentlemen, I am John C.
- 22:46Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, author, and so much
- 22:49more.
- 22:50I thank you so much from the bottom
- 22:52of my heart for choosing to join me
- 22:54on another empowering episode of Inspirations For Your

- 23:12Subscribe and tell me in the comments which
- 23:17strength you're choosing to put into action.
- 23:20You see, by making a deliberate choice can
- 23:27dramatically impact the success of your life.
- 23:30I know that sounds crazy, guys, but it's
- 23:34ultimately true.
- 23:36We find ourselves looking for approval.
- 23:39And when we don't get it, we complain,
- 23:44we get aggravated, we get sad.
- 23:47But what if we didn't need the approval
- 23:50of someone?
- 23:51Let's just suppose that we didn't need the
- 23:53approval of someone else.
- 23:55That'd be pretty remarkable, wouldn't it?
- 23:58Just suppose, because if maybe you're scared about
- 24:01losing the blanket, just suppose it for a
- 24:04moment.
- 24:04And I bet you'll never wanna go back
- 24:06to wanting someone else's approval.
- 24:08You don't need the approval.
- 24:10You can give yourself that dopamine rush by
- 24:12you doing something well.
- 24:14You don't need people to applaud you on.
- 24:17It's nice, but don't decide if you're gonna
- 24:20do it based on what other people are
- 24:22gonna do back to you.
- 24:25I think that keeps people stuck in life.
- 24:28Well, I didn't get the praise, I didn't
- 24:30get the applause, I didn't get the acknowledgement,
- 24:33I didn't get the award.
- 24:34So what?
- 24:39Did you learn something?
- 24:42Yes.
- 24:43What did you learn?
- 24:47How can I replay the scene in my
- 24:51head with taking that action?
- 24:54Now, you might not be able to change
- 24:55the action that happened, but you can replay
- 24:58these scenes in your head maybe before you
- 25:00go to bed and say, wait a minute,
- 25:01if I could redo the day, this is
- 25:02how I would have responded to it.
- 25:03And your mind's like, wait a minute, I
- 25:05know what to do now.
- 25:07When this situation is, oh, I know how
- 25:09to handle this.
- 25:12And it will become second nature to you.
- 25:15And you'll be installing a protection system so
- 25:18people don't walk on you.
- 25:21Let's face it, a lot of people out
- 25:23there, they do things not for the greater
- 25:26good of all concerned, they do it for
- 25:28the greater good of just them.
- 25:31I don't know about you, but I think
- 25:32that's wrong.
- 25:35And regardless of whether that's gonna help you
- 25:38or hurt you, they could not give a
- 25:40darn about.
- 25:42All they care about is that they have
- 25:44you in the palm of their hand.
- 25:47So why are you letting people control you
- 25:50like a marionette puppet?
- 25:52You're worth more than that.
- 25:55You should be pulling your own strings, never
- 25:58someone else.
- 25:59Because if you let someone else pull their
- 26:01strings, you're gonna just be like, here I
- 26:05go again.
- 26:06I gotta lift my left foot.
- 26:07I gotta lift my left arm, my right
- 26:09arm.
- 26:10You're not even thinking.
- 26:12Cut the strings of the marionette, okay?
- 26:15And let yourself be the one that decides
- 26:19what gets pulled by your own deliberate choice
- 26:23and decisions that you make, not influenced by
- 26:27anyone else.
- 26:28That is probably the most important thing that
- 26:30I can tell you.
- 26:33So tonight we had a very power episode
- 26:35about this.
- 26:36Stop letting people decide your worth, right?
- 26:40I think that can be hard for a
- 26:42lot of people to, again, digest, okay?
- 26:48You're worth a lot.
- 26:49But don't let other people say, well, you
- 26:51know what?
- 26:52If you don't act this way, then you're
- 26:54not valuable to me.
- 26:56Maybe that's a person that shouldn't be in
- 26:58your life anymore.
- 26:59Maybe that's somebody who's trying to manipulate you.
- 27:02Maybe that's someone who's gonna put you through
- 27:04burnout because all they care about is how
- 27:06they can push your buttons and get you
- 27:08to do what they wanna do regardless of
- 27:11how it makes you feel or affects your
- 27:14own core values.
- 27:15Now, I know that sounds harsh, but I'm
- 27:18here to give you the truth so you
- 27:20can prepare and have the best life ever.
