- 0:20grew up on static and midnight shows.
- 0:25MTV raised us. You already know latchkey hearts
- 0:33and wild eyed dreams, their own mind staring at the scene but
- 0:41you say it's too much to unpack. But I'll see you wait and I've
- 0:47got your back. Talk
- 1:00at the world. No one replied, but we didn't.
- 1:11Good morning welcome or welcome back to that Gen.
- 1:14X from podcast. Before I begin, as usual, I want
- 1:17to give a shout out to MB radio. Thanks H for getting this all
- 1:24started and continue to grow it, grow this platform for veterans
- 1:32to share the voices, their perspectives.
- 1:37So let's get to it. I think I'm going to stick to
- 1:41this transition. That's the only way I believe is
- 1:44working. So today I wanted to talk about
- 1:51LAR Ping. And for those who may not know
- 1:56what LAR Ping stands for, that's live action role-playing.
- 2:01It is becoming, it's it became more popular.
- 2:05I'm not sure how popular it is still is, but the current usage
- 2:12for it for movies like live action.
- 2:15So they take a cartoon that was already, you know, that was
- 2:18popular, like Little Mermaid or what is the one that's Hawaii.
- 2:23Oh my goodness, there was another one.
- 2:28I was recently made. They're they're actually
- 2:31remaking a lot of like the live action version of this, right.
- 2:38But I, I want to take it into a different direction because as
- 2:48Shakespeare said, all of life is the stage.
- 2:52So in a way we are, we come into this world and whoever we are
- 2:57and we kind of role play, right? That's we put ourselves out
- 3:04there by the way we look, by the way we sound, how we choose to
- 3:11what we do. It's all sort of role-playing,
- 3:13but not we're not choosing like, oh, today I'm going to be, well,
- 3:18some people are now choosing different things to be.
- 3:22However, historically speaking, Shakespeare meant it that we
- 3:29came to play a role in our lives.
- 3:37I want you to imagine this in the description.
- 3:43I believe most of us have had this interaction sort of
- 3:48encounter either by chance or by circumstance that was deliberate
- 3:56or by fate. You, you have this encounter
- 4:00with this individual and wow, you come away from this
- 4:05encounter and you're blown away by their persona, right?
- 4:13They were well quaffed. Doesn't matter gender from head
- 4:19to toe. They just looked is this real?
- 4:24You know, they they were walk qua from head to toe.
- 4:27All the looks they made your heart go pitter patter and they
- 4:32wore I think, forgive me if I'm using this incorrectly.
- 4:38Call it drip, right? They're dripping because the
- 4:41clothes they're wearing, they're dripping with all the trending
- 4:48coveted brand names. I guess Louis Vuitton, you know,
- 4:53whatever, whatever is popular right now because personally, I
- 4:58like to shop things on clearance at TD Maxx people, I digress.
- 5:06And on top of that, during this encounter, they have, whether
- 5:11deliberately or, you know, situation appropriate, shared
- 5:16the suffixes after their name. It could, it could be MDPHDJD,
- 5:24whatever else comes, especially in, let's say, the tech arena,
- 5:29you can have all these just long, long abbreviations of
- 5:35achievements after the name. He's just like mind equals
- 5:42blown, blown away, dizzied. You know, once we're like that,
- 5:52it's dizzying and we become starry eyed and post encounter.
- 5:58We we can't help it. That's you know, we do that.
- 6:06Whether you, you think this is a potential mate or this is a
- 6:10potential person you can collaborate with, hire or
- 6:14somebody, a mentor, whatever you can name it.
- 6:17And you're imagine you're going, you've fallen down the rabbit
- 6:21hole like Alice in Wonderland and your imagination's going wow
- 6:30of what the future may bring with this individual.
- 6:37And you've, if you imagine all the things just from that one
- 6:41encounter, right? And almost assigned this
- 6:51qualifier of how qualified they are for all kinds of things
- 6:55because they I'm not saying the initials after the suffixes
- 6:59after name does not qualify them for whatever they obviously some
- 7:05people have gone forth and put forth effort to earn the
- 7:10credentials, right, All the things they can list after the
- 7:12name. But beyond all the all the
- 7:18things I just lifted off, I listed off Beyond that, there's
- 7:26like almost subconscious thing that we assigned to them to be
- 7:31qualified for all things, all kinds of things.
- 7:37We carry it over. So here I give you the next
- 7:43situation. When I was younger and this is a
- 7:45real story, I think it was really the first time I was
- 7:52introduced to Halloween and like really I'm an immigrant, so like
- 7:59to dress up. OK.
- 8:01So I think the first time I really had a costume, I I was an
- 8:06Angel. I had the little, the glitter, I
- 8:11guess they're tinsels like wrapped around this Halo looking
- 8:14thing that was attached to the whatever I was wearing, the
- 8:18white robe that I was wearing. Yeah, I, I was in today's terms,
- 8:26I was Larping as an Angel. But Angel, it did not make me.
- 8:36I was not an Angel and nor did I have the capabilities.
- 8:40Oh, yeah. I even had the little wand.
- 8:42I think it was a star wand. You know, you can, I guess,
- 8:49bestow whatever the gifts an Angel would and could if I was
- 8:58actually an Angel, but I was not.
- 8:59I was just merely Larping. I bring up these two situations.
- 9:06This, this latter 1 is a kid dressing up as an Angel.
- 9:10Well, of course, nobody, nobody believes it, right?
- 9:14It, it's for Halloween, people dress up with all kinds of
- 9:18things, whatever, but in life. So that's why I bring up these
- 9:23two situations. It's just supposing like in real
- 9:26life, no, I didn't put much effort.
- 9:29Actually somebody else made the, it was the last minute like I,
- 9:34we didn't have costumes. So that that was really easy.
- 9:39But the first individual I asked you to imagine potentially went
- 9:48forth, well, not potentially, obviously to look a certain way,
- 9:52to dress a certain way. There's a level of effortness or
- 9:57yeah, effort that goes into just playing that image well, whether
- 10:08it is them for real or not, right?
- 10:13And man doesn't impress. I'm not saying so I want to make
- 10:20it clear that to look a certain way to be that individual that
- 10:25just overwhelms your senses. You're just like blown away.
- 10:28You're you're filled with admiration or infatuation.
- 10:31I'm not saying these individuals are working.
- 10:35They they could this really could be them, right?
- 10:38Or maybe could not. For those people, those of us
- 10:43are those of us out here who are paying attention to the news
- 10:50recently, You, you can look this up is literally going on right
- 10:54now. It is all over the news.
- 10:57Cambridge, the youngest full professor at Cambridge ended up
- 11:09being a scandal. You you can look it up 'cause it
- 11:11has a lot to do with other things, but LAR ping I would say
- 11:19is appropriate. This LAR ping, however, when you
- 11:23LARP, regardless how you looked, eventually the LAR ping sort of
- 11:33falls apart and you got to go back to the real role that, you
- 11:38know, it could have been anything.
- 11:41I think there was a George Michael song, Freedom, a line
- 11:45that says the clothes do not make the man.
- 11:47It's the same concept, right? You might look a certain way.
- 11:51But what I want to discuss today and get to using these two
- 11:58examples is there's a psychological phenomenon known
- 12:05as the Halo effect. And basically it means depending
- 12:14on we assigned. And that's why I came up the I
- 12:16remember the I, I played an Angel because I had the Halo.
- 12:22Obviously I had no, none of the capabilities, but it's our
- 12:27tendency, human tendency to use one aspect of a person like they
- 12:35they're physically fit, right? Wow, they're whatever you can
- 12:40assign. I listed a whole bunch like
- 12:42they're wearing the right clothes, they have the right
- 12:44initials after their name and they're well clothed.
- 12:48From that, we then infer they have the capabilities, the
- 12:53qualifying like highly qualified for unrelated things, right.
- 13:02For example, we can we can think using the first example, this
- 13:09well crocked person like wow, they look like they take care of
- 13:15themselves. Let let's even add another layer
- 13:17because obviously to be that attractive to be for us to be
- 13:24overwhelmed by admiration and infatuation.
- 13:29This person obviously what's attractive to us and we're
- 13:37thinking, wow, unrelated now, wow.
- 13:41They look so like they take time to take care of themselves.
- 13:46And then if we happen to think about their homes, like, oh,
- 13:49they must be very neat too, you know, because it takes a lot of
- 13:52effort to go and take care of themselves.
- 13:54Their clothes look nice. They're whatever, whatever,
- 13:57whatever. And we assign it based on the
- 14:03Halo effect because the Halo kind of signs over everything,
- 14:06right? Like you hear this, Well, you
- 14:13may hear like sort of like the angels are singing the Halos.
- 14:17The Halo effect is happening and we human, our human mind do not
- 14:26jump to the conclusion like, oh, they may just look nice, but
- 14:29that house is a, you know, a dump.
- 14:32They don't know how to clean. There's clothes everywhere and
- 14:35whatever maybe their clothes was they, the clothes they were,
- 14:40they wore was temporarily rented 'cause there are actually
- 14:48services like that out there, right?
- 14:49People rent very expensive clothes just to look a certain
- 14:53way, like influencers rent private jets, things like that.
- 15:01We have a tendency to assign this qualifier for these people
- 15:08to be highly qualified, not knowing exactly what they're
- 15:12qualified for. That's the Halo effect.
- 15:14You, you can look up the the exact explanation for this
- 15:20phenomenon and digest it for yourself.
- 15:26But this is how I'm explaining now.
- 15:30And just say this individual that you encountered, you get to
- 15:36work with these people, right? Or or you have further
- 15:43encounters or opportunities to interact with these people on
- 15:49various different levels. And because from the first
- 15:52initial and first impression is is very, very important.
- 15:57That's not and you cannot downplay.
- 15:59I'm not saying go and look like you roll out of bed, but some
- 16:03people also do you know, and and likewise the not so much as a
- 16:12Halo effect, but I guess it would be the there's no opponent
- 16:19or opposite to the Halo effect. But we also then infer if you
- 16:24look like a roll out of bed for certain situations, we then
- 16:28infer the same sort of qualifier on how you do the rest of the
- 16:35things. But it's the Halo effect that
- 16:39has the more devastating potential outcomes because just
- 16:50say from a romantic, like you're infatuated, this person is
- 16:55beautiful and they they checked all the boxes and yeah, they're
- 17:00interested in you. And you had inferred that.
- 17:05Wow, unrelated, right? Besides the fact that they they
- 17:12look like they put effort into themselves, they're the way they
- 17:16dress, the effort they took to get whatever suffixes after
- 17:23their name. If it's real, because there are
- 17:27a lot of example for that Cambridge professor not real.
- 17:34It's actually it's pretty bad, especially for Cambridge.
- 17:45Pretty shameful, but things like that and you get in this
- 17:49relationship and you, you, you are starry eyed and you're
- 17:55imagining how great life would be with these people based on
- 18:01that initial and first impression is leave alone once
- 18:05we had made a decision, conflict decided, we, we picked the road
- 18:11that we're going to travel on. There's also like confirmation
- 18:14bias. We want to confirm if our
- 18:16confirmation were then found to be wrong.
- 18:19There's we suffer stress and cognitive dissonance.
- 18:23They're like, Oh my God, this cannot be true.
- 18:25That's why a lot of times even when we are proving proven
- 18:32wrong, we fight to maintain that perception.
- 18:39First impressions are very important but you know this one
- 18:42overwhelms you. You get in the relationship with
- 18:45this person and long like long term relationship you have
- 18:53committed to each other and then you start getting that's fine.
- 19:04But from the looks of this person I had inferred that they
- 19:09are good at housekeeping, they are good at communications, they
- 19:13are good at finances, they are good at being truthful.
- 19:28Because of the Halo effect we had give them the, they are now
- 19:31the Angel. Like it qualifies them for
- 19:34everything, right? Because the Halo effect means
- 19:36they're pure and it's it, it gives a glow to everything.
- 19:44We tend not to think bad. I mean, who wears a Halo that's
- 19:48bad? I mean, come on.
- 19:51I, I don't believe fallen angels wear Halos.
- 19:53But you know, 'cause our commonly accepted image of the
- 19:57Angel is that they have a Halo, they have this soft lighting
- 20:01that makes them perfect. I'm sorry about all my lighting.
- 20:05Obviously I don't have the Halo effect anyways.
- 20:10Yeah, I just snorted. So the Halo effect and you're
- 20:18just like, and you feel cheated by this person like how can that
- 20:25be? You lied to me after we have
- 20:31sort of surrendered our trust in their ability to do something
- 20:38based on this Halo effect. They may have even proven like,
- 20:47let's say the suffixes after their name is that they are
- 20:52highly, highly capable in the technology world for all the
- 21:01Internet security, AI, whatever you can put after your name for
- 21:05that. And and that's that's your deal,
- 21:11that's your get. That's what gets you like, wow,
- 21:13that's awesome. And they still have the looks
- 21:17and all this stuff going on for them.
- 21:22And you had a sign because of the Halo effect just assumed
- 21:27inferred. They are also capable elsewhere
- 21:30because capability is, you know, is it.
- 21:37I can't say the word compartment.
- 21:41It's not isolated. I can't say the word.
- 21:44Sometimes I can say the word. So like there's no way it it it
- 21:49bleeds through, right. We didn't ask them.
- 21:54We just inferred may they may even hinted at it because some
- 21:58people do that right. But I'm I'm talking about taking
- 22:01responsibility for our part in perpetuating the Halo effect and
- 22:07then suffering some potentially bad outcomes because we had
- 22:12assigned this wow, the high quality to this person based on
- 22:17one aspect of they are really high achievers or do really well
- 22:21or an image or how they sounded and or how they portray
- 22:25themselves, how they were Larping.
- 22:27They could be Oscar winners. They could have played an Angel.
- 22:32Does that mean they're an Angel? They can bestow you or whatever,
- 22:37bestow their environment where with their capabilities?
- 22:41No. And we are perturbed.
- 22:47We are just frustrated like how can you what I gave you access
- 22:54to do this, that and the other and some of the access we give,
- 22:59the allowances, the permissiveness we have given
- 23:04like almost control. We surrender ourselves, our
- 23:07mind, our trust over these people.
- 23:11And we were proven wrong. Like, like, you know, you're so
- 23:18good at Internet security. I'm going to give you access to
- 23:26my finances. You, you run that too, because
- 23:29looks like you got it all together.
- 23:33And I don't know how many months, because time really can
- 23:40help us, help those of us who may have been overwhelmed by
- 23:50admiration or infatuation see clearly who this individual
- 23:56really is. Like the totality of them.
- 24:01Outside of the Halo effect, The Halo is chipping a little.
- 24:03You're like, wait, what? Halo's chip, OK, you know, at
- 24:11first you're like, huh, OK, you manage to stress months later,
- 24:16let's just say months later, cuz at first you're just like ah la
- 24:20da da, everything's going great. It's the exponential effect,
- 24:24right? Like at first everything moves
- 24:26slow then all of a sudden just shoots up and it just mind
- 24:31blown. And you look at your finances
- 24:34after having given trust based on the wrongful assumption of
- 24:41this individual who's a great Internet security guru, can you
- 24:48handle your finances? And then you're like, wait, what
- 24:54is this? Look, I see you transferred this
- 24:59over to your account, but that's not the reason why I gave that
- 25:06to you is for this, not for you to transfer it into your own
- 25:09account, but due to something else.
- 25:14And justifiably not really, because if they know they're
- 25:18doing wrong, they know they're doing wrong.
- 25:19But in a way, it's almost we like, we set ourselves up for
- 25:24that great big fall like, well, you've had access.
- 25:31I mean, you, you said do whatever.
- 25:34I trust you. So I was doing whatever.
- 25:36So, So what if I did this? I mean, I was doing some other
- 25:41stuff too. I do see, I, I helped you here a
- 25:44little bit. I did what I was going to do
- 25:47here a little bit, but not all the time.
- 25:49And I really needed this, right? For whatever.
- 25:53Like I want to invest in something because for
- 26:00information security, I wanted to get another certificate,
- 26:05let's say. And at the time I was, you know,
- 26:13it was available, but I'm I'm going to pay you back though.
- 26:17And you're frustrated. And in some ways, you know,
- 26:22partially like, OK, I should have been more responsible, but
- 26:27it's a Halo effect that's that's in it that is taken over control
- 26:32because you so want to trust this person that has that look
- 26:37like they are the whole deal and everything and a bag of chips or
- 26:42bread, whatever. But it wasn't true.
- 26:50And we did that to ourselves. I've done it by the way somebody
- 26:56looked, by the way somebody had all the right surfaces, by the
- 27:05way they dressed. And then after further
- 27:09investigation or not even investigation, passive
- 27:13investigation, because as time goes on, we start discovering
- 27:17the little cracks in the persona.
- 27:20If the persona that we built, the Halo effect that we built,
- 27:26you're like, well, there's a crack over there.
- 27:27Wait, wait, there's a ketchup stain on your, your white Angel,
- 27:32you know, robe. What is up with that?
- 27:39So and, and we sit in discomfort like, but not knowing why we did
- 27:50this. Not it, it's, it's, you know,
- 27:56it's human, it it's common. We do this all the time.
- 28:01I'm not saying be paranoid because don't we are just like
- 28:07stage Zero said, we are all on the stage.
- 28:10And some people are really, they're sincere, they're really
- 28:13working out. They're actually embodying the
- 28:21LAR ping experience, right? They play an Angel.
- 28:24Maybe they're working on being an Angel, I don't know,
- 28:28whatever. And some role-playing actors
- 28:31really get into the character and really become these people.
- 28:36So don't be paranoid. What I wanted to share is to
- 28:41have the awareness that we have the tendency as humans to to
- 28:51project qualifications onto people based on a legitimate
- 28:58expertise in one field or looking one way like their
- 29:03fitness models, like, you know, work out those people that all
- 29:08they do is go to the gym and film themselves.
- 29:11And from the way they look, they look lean, they look beautiful
- 29:17in their clothes. And, and all of a sudden we are
- 29:21assigning whatever it is our imagination wants to assign to
- 29:26them. The qualification.
- 29:28It could be a number of thing like whatever, it's endless.
- 29:34And we fall down that rabbit hole and we just start just, you
- 29:37know, like Oprah, you get this, you get that you can assign the
- 29:41qualifications for everything, everybody you know, for
- 29:45everything that I want to assign you.
- 29:47And then we find ourselves all like like angry that it's not
- 29:53true when it's proven not true. I'm not saying that there are
- 29:58individuals out there that cannot still be qualified in
- 30:04other areas based on one expertise, right?
- 30:09But to blindly, the tendency for us to blindly assign
- 30:14qualifications based on one thing that we know of, right?
- 30:20Whether it's real or not real, it is the outcomes are not good.
- 30:28And we're setting ourselves up for the fall, right?
- 30:32Nobody's perfect. And there are people out there
- 30:35that that are just extraordinary.
- 30:37They could be good at almost anything you can name, but those
- 30:43people are rare and are treasures.
- 30:50So I wanted to share this. So we are aware that OK, I met
- 30:57this person and they are indeed extraordinary and wow, you are
- 31:03blown away. And they do in reality deserve
- 31:07this admiration or infatuation. But to reserve a piece of your
- 31:15mind, A piece of my mind, our mind to say, hey, let me, let me
- 31:21not falsely or incorrectly, inappropriately assign
- 31:29qualifications to unrelated things of life or whatever
- 31:34capabilities to them when they didn't ask for it, right?
- 31:42It was all in our own mind. Sometimes people actually,
- 31:45because they know about the Halo effect, they, they sort of use
- 31:49it to manipulate. There are all all kinds of
- 31:52people out there. That's why I say don't be
- 31:54paranoid. Mostly we can control this, the
- 32:00gateway, right? Like this, knowing about this
- 32:04phenomenon, a very human phenomenon can help us, can act
- 32:10as a preventative measure barrier to us feeling frustrated
- 32:18later and wondering why and then erroneously getting mad at the
- 32:22person that they didn't even, well, why did you think I was
- 32:25going to be good at that? I'm, I'm good at this, you know
- 32:29that. But that's all that was all in
- 32:32your head. I had nothing to do with it.
- 32:34And in that case, we are at fault and something could have
- 32:38went catastrophically wrong or just minor inconveniences and
- 32:43frustrations. Well, why?
- 32:45Why do that when we can have this awareness of the potential
- 32:50for us to do so? Like, oh, hey, there's a
- 32:54potential, let me stop myself. Let me investigate, right?
- 32:57Whether this person look good in their clothes or not, OK, they
- 33:04could have been Larping that day.
- 33:06I was Larping as an Angel. I was not, nor did I have the
- 33:10capabilities. So it it could be a momentary
- 33:15thing, that image that they built or for whatever reason,
- 33:21right. Maybe the the occasion was
- 33:24because it was a business meeting and they are nonetheless
- 33:28highly qualified, very intelligent, but they prefer,
- 33:31you know, wearing Hawaiian shirts and shorts because that's
- 33:36where they're most comfortable. But yet that one image, just
- 33:44like Oprah, you get qualified, you get access to the city and
- 33:48everything in it, right? And don't do that as a as a
- 33:58caution like knowing's half the battle.
- 34:04I think in I think the 80s, I don't know it was a rainbow that
- 34:08had a star. The more you know or whatever it
- 34:11was. This infomercial, not
- 34:12infomercials, but info shows like about life.
- 34:17They usually have teenage issues or see I, I can't remember.
- 34:23I can only remember after the fact because I'm doing this in
- 34:28real time and I, I get all tongue tied and can't remember
- 34:32nothing. So forgive me.
- 34:36So this is what I wanted to share.
- 34:38You know, like right now, I won't go.
- 34:41Around 3:00 this morning, I put some effort into looking like
- 34:49I'm awake. I'm not really.
- 34:53I'm not. But I look like it.
- 34:58I think I look like it. I put some effort into, you
- 35:01know, my hair was like looking like I took care of myself and I
- 35:07am ready for the day. I'm not.
- 35:10So then maybe some of you. Oh, yeah.
- 35:15Wow. You know, she looks like she put
- 35:18some effort into which I did into making myself not look like
- 35:22I just rolled out of bed, but thinking that I was ready for
- 35:26the day and I was prepared and I'm not anxious.
- 35:29Well, it that's not true. I'm still anxious.
- 35:35I'm not prepared for the day. But it the clothes did not make
- 35:41the man. The look does not make the
- 35:43person, the suffixes after a person's name does not make them
- 35:51completely and holistically qualifying for everything.
- 35:58I don't want to belabor the point, but I just wanted to
- 36:01share it because we've all, I, I believe we've all done this in
- 36:05one way or another, and one whether for good or for bad.
- 36:09Maybe your Halo effect worked out, maybe indeed they proved
- 36:16your Halo effect correct. Maybe it didn't.
- 36:21And and really, we have a role to claim in this whatever
- 36:32outcome that happened. Some are just lucky and some are
- 36:36not right. But now that we know and no one
- 36:40is half the battle GI Joe yeah, let's maybe be more careful not
- 36:54to do so and help others also realize this is a human
- 37:00phenomenon. We do this because, you know,
- 37:03who wouldn't? Who wouldn't want that
- 37:07qualifying person to trust somebody into?
- 37:10It'd be so easy. Don't be paranoid, but be
- 37:15careful. And so maybe we can sidestep
- 37:20some of these potholes, you know, the pitfalls that we set
- 37:27ourselves up for the fall. So that's what I wanted to
- 37:34share, you know, because ramifications of the Halo effect
- 37:41in, let's say, higher education in high places can have
- 37:51devastating outcomes. And the impact is wide and it's
- 37:58deep. And if we can be aware of it on
- 38:02all sports levels, I think we can at least reduce the negative
- 38:11impact or adverse non beneficial impact of such as using the Halo
- 38:18effect for an individual, for a company, for a brand, for
- 38:24whatever and just be more aware. Well, thank you for listening if
- 38:33I sounded like I was not awake because I'm not.
- 38:37And I pray for you guys all the time.
- 38:40And until two weeks from now, you guys have a blessed day.
