Transcript
- 0:17All right, good afternoon. Welcome.
- 0:18Millory Condon On a Wednesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:23Back to Iowa based programming here.
- 0:25For the next 6 hour block, we'll take the 1st 2, Trent Condon,
- 0:29Ken Miller till 2:00, then off the bench Lucas Strange, Sean
- 0:33Roberts till 5:00 and then overtime Iowa from 5:00 until
- 0:376:00. On a day that Matt Campbell is
- 0:40dreaded coming, it is here. We will see if during the next
- 0:43couple of hours we do get an availability report from Iowa
- 0:46State, although I think they're in the air, so we will.
- 0:50Maybe that's a perfect time to release it.
- 0:52Maybe, oh God, I just put it out there and won't have to duck
- 0:56because you'll be in the air anyways coming up on our program
- 0:59here today. What is the line up Trent I?
- 1:01Forgot we got Nick Marvitz to kick things off talking cyclones
- 1:04and preview the match up over an island against K State.
- 1:07So. He's up first.
- 1:08He is on Locked on Cyclones and he'll be here at 12:25.
- 1:12Of course, Mitch Holtis at 12:45 in our daily conversation on the
- 1:17Kansas City Chiefs. Then at 1:00, it'll be David
- 1:19Kaplan in his standard Wednesday I.
- 1:22Think we have somebody else do we?
- 1:24I thought we did anyways. Well, if we do and we don't call
- 1:29you with our bad any coming up. That's it.
- 1:32So we will talk sports with you until 2:00.
- 1:34So let's start with some some baseball news, some television
- 1:38news when it comes to when it comes to baseball, in some of
- 1:42the changes that are coming, ESPN Sunday Night Baseball is
- 1:45out, by all accounts, NBC. And how about NBC, what they're
- 1:49doing on Sunday nights? Sports evidently matter to the
- 1:53Peacock network. They are going to have obviously
- 1:56Sunday Night Football on NBC. That will give way into the NBA,
- 2:00which will take its place at some point that comes up through
- 2:05the winter months. And then once we get to baseball
- 2:07season, ESPN, which had Sunday night Baseball, gives way to
- 2:11NBC. So that's basically year round
- 2:14Sunday night sports on network TV.
- 2:17How about that? Yeah, it's AI think a brilliant
- 2:20idea. It's something that's makes a
- 2:22whole lot of sense if you're trying to find something
- 2:23anymore. You know what's rates?
- 2:25We know it's sports. You know the goofy contest shows
- 2:30that was rate anymore. The American Idol, the Voice,
- 2:33you know those kind of things. Honestly, how?
- 2:34Many. How many times can you look at
- 2:36those? What are those videos that Bob
- 2:38Saga was part of? The funniest video?
- 2:39Well, yeah. How many times can you do this
- 2:41year after? Year we we still watch that
- 2:43because the kids. Still going, but.
- 2:44Yeah, yeah, the kids get a kick out of that one.
- 2:46That's that's a family favorite because I can get a chuckle
- 2:48every once in awhile out of those too.
- 2:50But overall, we no, it's sport and if you're NBC and network TV
- 2:55trying to find those kind of ratings in a changing
- 2:58environment, I think it makes a ton of sense.
- 2:59So I'm excited for it. I think it's something a little
- 3:02bit different and then we just kind of wait.
- 3:04But I thought the biggest part of this deal Apple.
- 3:07Being out. Not that because I've never
- 3:10watched a broadcast. Nor I don't get Apple.
- 3:11Yeah, neither do I. Is ESPN buying MLB.TV?
- 3:19What does that mean? Well, what that means
- 3:21potentially is. So not the MLB Network.
- 3:25Correctmlb.tv. This is a part now, I would
- 3:30guess in the future, and this is my anticipation, what this is
- 3:32going to look like. The teams that are no longer run
- 3:35by Bally Sports, the Minnesota Twins, the Texas Rangers, the
- 3:39San Diego Padres, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Cleveland
- 3:42Guardians and I, the handful of others that are under that
- 3:46umbrella. Now, Royals, you can go out
- 3:50there and buy the ESPN app for your $30.00 a month and then
- 3:55you'll have access to all of those teams and what they hoped
- 3:59down the line. They're not going to get the
- 4:01Dodgers, they're not going to have the Yankees or the Red Sox.
- 4:03The the local ones that make sense.
- 4:05But the ones without a home? Ones without a home.
- 4:07You wonder about the Cardinals, what their future is going to
- 4:09look and and a few others that are kind of they're.
- 4:12TV Future. Yes, and what that's going to
- 4:14look like. So I know that's what Major
- 4:16League Baseball wants. And outside of the Heavy, he
- 4:18heads something that they think they're going to be able to do.
- 4:21So would these be ESPN broadcasters?
- 4:24Or would. They no, it would the locals it
- 4:25would still be yes like it is. They just get the feed, they
- 4:28just have the rights. Gotcha.
- 4:30And with it they're going to have to pay for those rights.
- 4:33And I also wonder the financial component to it.
- 4:35More money You mean for the teams?
- 4:37Well, because one of the main reasons that we saw I know the
- 4:40Twins payroll slashed is because of what happened little TV Joe
- 4:43yes and going from that between 40 fifty $60 million that came
- 4:48in yearly from the regional sports license now. 20 it's
- 4:52peanuts compared to what it was, I mean.
- 4:55Less than half in some instances of what they had.
- 4:58Is that money going to start to filter back in now with this new
- 5:01deal? That's what we'll have to see.
- 5:02Netflix gets the Home Run Derby. All right, I'll flip it on.
- 5:06You know every I mean isn't, isn't Netflix.
- 5:09Help me out here. Is Netflix the most popular
- 5:12streaming service? It's not even close.
- 5:15I mean it has to be 10s of millions, not just domestically.
- 5:19Were they? Were they first?
- 5:22I don't know. I mean, who would have been?
- 5:24Who would it have been? Well, right.
- 5:27Right, but Netflix had to be Netflix.
- 5:28Do you remember Netflix wouldn't No, because I.
- 5:30Hated it. You did.
- 5:32Netflix was great. Let's go down a history lesson.
- 5:36Youngsters, didn't you? Wasn't Netflix at first.
- 5:38You could kind of like the Amazon for video for movies on.
- 5:44That's all it was. They were.
- 5:45They were Blockbuster, but in your mailbox.
- 5:47Absolutely right. That's all it was.
- 5:49You got on. You made your selection, they
- 5:52sent you the DVD, you watched the movie, you popped back in,
- 5:55put it back in the mail, and then it comes back and you can
- 5:57get another one. As soon as it's sent back in.
- 5:58You can do that. And that's all this.
- 6:00There was no streaming component when Netflix began, but they had
- 6:04this idea. This idea has worked out
- 6:06incredibly well for Netflix and yeah, Total total subscribers.
- 6:13Money. Whoever came up with this
- 6:14concept sold their idea too. You ready for this?
- 6:17Yeah, fire away. As of quarter 4 of 2024, Netflix
- 6:21reported having 301 million paid subscribers.
- 6:26And who invented it and how much did they sell it for?
- 6:31Well, you're asking a lot over there.
- 6:32I I don't have that to have Netflix.
- 6:34And what beach do they live on now?
- 6:36Who owns? Let's see major investors,
- 6:40Vanguard Group and Black Rock individual shareholders.
- 6:44Reed Hastings is the guy. And what was your other
- 6:48question? What beach the guy who invented
- 6:50lives on? Now don't have that one.
- 6:51Jeez. 301 million subscribers per month?
- 6:58Jesus, that's $20.00 a month and.
- 6:59That's what the cost is, 20 bucks. 15 to 20, yeah.
- 7:02We have it. I don't even know what we I
- 7:04don't think we pay for it. I think we're on a family plan
- 7:06with my sister-in-law. Yeah, part of I think yes, maybe
- 7:10we do. It's all in theory.
- 7:11Yeah, it is good stuff. Well, I know that this can't
- 7:14this can't make the couple of our former colleagues very
- 7:18pleased over at NBC because they bitch and moan when their their
- 7:22their sports. Sunday night sports shows.
- 7:24Oh right, yeah, for Sunday Night Football.
- 7:26Now that basketball and baseball are gonna elbow their way in, we
- 7:30shall see the good. News is baseball.
- 7:32Is it's over? Yeah, it's over if.
- 7:33This would have been three years ago before the pitch clock.
- 7:35Oh my God. Yeah, we got Yankees, Red Sox.
- 7:38We'll get on the air at 11:48. Well done.
- 7:40Yeah, this is Manfred. I know he takes a lot of arrows.
- 7:43If the pitch clock was him and he pushed for it, well done
- 7:46because this this one absolutely worked.
- 7:48Now get the umpiring thing right.
- 7:50Let us be able to challenge that.
- 7:52Here's one thing I want to talk about when it since we're on the
- 7:55media, you know, well done by some of our locals, right?
- 7:59KCCI Channel 8 is sending a photog reister and Stacey Horst.
- 8:05Who's their? Yeah, anchor, right?
- 8:07It's her. She's the face.
- 8:09Is she the face of news over there?
- 8:11Yeah. Now the Cooney's retired.
- 8:12Oh, absolutely, yeah. I have no idea why she's going.
- 8:15I don't watch the local news or or any of it, but but well done.
- 8:19The fact that they're finding room for Ben Hutchins, yes, from
- 8:22the Cedar Rapids Gazette and and like newspapers, he's over
- 8:26there. There's a bunch of people going
- 8:28to cover this series in an era, let's face it, not what it once
- 8:32was. The the dollars aren't
- 8:35necessarily where they were. No, they aren't where they were
- 8:39even a decade ago. So well done being being able to
- 8:41get out there and bring it back to your audience.
- 8:43But. What we know and for what we do,
- 8:45local still matters. Sure it does.
- 8:48I don't know anything. Not sure if you saw yesterday
- 8:50that Tegna who Channel 5 here locally is owned by them.
- 8:54They were bought by Nexstar who owns channel 13 and so that
- 8:59group of I think it's 45 maybe more than that stations across
- 9:03the country or bought. And looking at the press
- 9:05release, because locked on network is part of Tegna, they
- 9:09talked about just that, that local still matters and we know
- 9:12it here. So Channel 13 now owns Channel
- 9:145. Well, no.
- 9:16Channel 5 has been owned by Tegna.
- 9:18Tegna is now owned by Nexstar. Which owns channel 13.
- 9:21So were they going to just double up?
- 9:23No, if you're if you're working on Channel 5, you're getting
- 9:25your resume ready. I don't think so, because no, I
- 9:29don't believe so. I don't think that's still AB CS
- 9:31not going away. No, but locally maybe, right?
- 9:34I mean, if your local newscast, you wonder what's going on
- 9:37because they're already doing 17, why not add one more?
- 9:40Yeah, I, I don't believe that's the thought process behind it.
- 9:42But that aside, when you look at this local matters and we know
- 9:47it here, regardless of all the changes, we know our numbers for
- 9:50their last full quarter book, it's unbelievable are up, Yeah.
- 9:54And regardless of who goes through this station matters,
- 9:58local matters, the Iowa Sports Radio Network matters.
- 10:01And on that front, for KCCI, it matters.
- 10:04And it's a great thing to see because for all the negativity,
- 10:07all the lies that are out there for the media buyers that don't
- 10:10know, yes, local still matters. And it absolutely positively
- 10:15matters in this market and across the state of.
- 10:17Iowa, yeah, Well done Channel 8 for sending in a good crew over
- 10:20there and everybody else that's over there as well.
- 10:23Cutting into your bottom line, but doing it for the shake of
- 10:25your viewers or in our case, listeners.
- 10:28I want to talk about the Chicago Cubs.
- 10:30Boy, they needed that yesterday in the worst way.
- 10:33This. Did you see Matt Shaw rounding
- 10:35the bases? How hard he was running last?
- 10:37Did you see him on the base? Yeah, he did.
- 10:39Yeah. What a machine he's.
- 10:42Kept him afloat. He really and truly has.
- 10:44When he when he legged out that triple, just a huffing and
- 10:48puffing and chugging, he was in full flight.
- 10:51Nico Horner. Owen Casey pulled from the game
- 10:54for Justin Turner. I didn't understand.
- 10:57I still don't understand it. Pinch hit 4.
- 11:01Only case. He was having a day.
- 11:02He was, he was having a day. And of all people, I don't get
- 11:06the Justin Turner stuff. I really don't.
- 11:08He's beloved, he and. I OK, I get that.
- 11:11And, and Elise Maniker went as far as to say exactly those
- 11:14things. And apparently he's in charge of
- 11:16the team dinners. Can't you find somebody else,
- 11:19find somebody else to orchestrate the team dinner that
- 11:21maybe can get a hit? He's got two big hits this year.
- 11:23I'll give him that a home run, walk off, home run.
- 11:26And I think it was a walk off double earlier, maybe April,
- 11:29late April into May. But it's just, it's just time.
- 11:33I mean, do do you need him in the club?
- 11:35Cappy's probably going to say the same thing you did.
- 11:37Did you need him in the club? As do you really?
- 11:39No, I don't think you do either. No, it's if your club.
- 11:42Dansby Swanson can't organize the dinner.
- 11:45If your clubhouse is that crystallized, that one little
- 11:51tick is going to have the whole thing collapse.
- 11:52It's a House of Cards. And if you get rid of a terrible
- 11:5640 year old utility man that it's all going to fall apart.
- 11:59You got bigger issues. You have bigger issues than
- 12:03that. Speaking of the Cubs, I want to
- 12:05bring something up to you because I, I mentioned this when
- 12:07we were doing our TV show earlier today and it's about the
- 12:12Cubs as a whole. So we do our power numbers and
- 12:14we have our top five in each league.
- 12:16And I have the Cubs at #5 And as I was going through, I think the
- 12:20Brewers are maybe broken our brain about this team.
- 12:24They haven't played great. Yeah, they're not very good
- 12:26offensively and certainly struggled since the also you're
- 12:29talking about the Cubs, the Cubs.
- 12:31But because the Brewers were playing at a historic clip.
- 12:35And because. The lead or the second time this
- 12:37season? And it just kept getting bigger
- 12:38and bigger and and the hope of a division title was basically
- 12:41dashed. Sometimes we don't see the force
- 12:44through the trees. You have the Mets ahead of the
- 12:45Cubs. There's no metric that you can
- 12:47look at that say the Mets are a better team this year than the
- 12:50Chicago Cubs. There's nothing.
- 12:52And you look at the rotation and you look at the offense and you
- 12:54go through everything. The Cubs are a better team in
- 12:57terms of run differential, which is kind of the easiest way to
- 12:59look at it. Run differential, they're second
- 13:02in the National League. Behind only the Brewers are the
- 13:05Chicago Cubs. But that was but but a lot of
- 13:08that hay was put in the barn in May and June.
- 13:10That's fair. That is fair, but still, overall
- 13:14it hasn't been great, but everybody has bad stretches.
- 13:17But but they've had a really bad offensive.
- 13:19Stretch they have. It's probably not as bad,
- 13:22though. Sometimes we get too close to
- 13:24the situation and not seeing it. Have you seen the Mets play good
- 13:27baseball for any part of the last three months?
- 13:29Better as of late, but not real good.
- 13:31No, no, they they've been bad. They've been bad there.
- 13:33They seemed maybe turned around. Think they scored eight runs
- 13:36last night, but they're playing the Nationals.
- 13:37They should score eight runs. Padres have had stretches,
- 13:40Dodgers have had stretches. We talked about that Philly's
- 13:42had a terrible start to the season and it made good sense.
- 13:44Then. Sometimes you're just too close
- 13:46to the situation. When you kind of take that
- 13:48all-encompassing view, it's not nearly as bad as you think.
- 13:51At the end of the day, is everybody are are we still
- 13:54looking up at the Dodgers in the National League?
- 13:57Does it feel like that to you? As good as the Brewers have
- 13:59been, as as fun as the Padres. Always a badge.
- 14:03See, I haven't. I I thought that they're bored.
- 14:05Now I think there's a switch. They're bored.
- 14:08They know they're going to be in the playoffs.
- 14:09They can play deep. Straight to the Angels.
- 14:13The Padres, who had taken the lead in the West.
- 14:15Come into your house and you sweep them, Otani, and then you
- 14:18lose to Colorado. But it's baseball too, right?
- 14:21Those things happen. It's a.
- 14:22Buck 62. Otani is going to be there and
- 14:25now he's going to be part of that rotation.
- 14:29And Mookie hasn't been great this year.
- 14:30No, he hasn't. But you know what?
- 14:32He had a big home run the other day, though.
- 14:33Come October. Yeah.
- 14:34Who? You bet not.
- 14:35On Sunday, he had a huge home run.
- 14:37The Padres Tiger to 4:00. Bottom of the ending.
- 14:40Here comes Mookie 54. That's what he does.
- 14:42That's what he does you know so he does that's what he did all
- 14:45right good stuff Iowa State as far as we countdown to kick off
- 14:51the more I look at this K state team and I know you like Iowa
- 14:54State in this game a lot. I just.
- 14:56I'm not there. You're not, I'm not there.
- 14:59I, I just think that I think we're overlooking K State's
- 15:04weapons. They've spent money on their
- 15:06offensive line. I get it.
- 15:08They've got some injuries there, but I like the running game.
- 15:11I love their quarterback. I mean, if would you rather have
- 15:13Becker, Avery Johnson, I think most people would say Avery
- 15:16Johnson. Not that Rocco Beck's a bad
- 15:17player. Brown, one of the receivers, is
- 15:19really, really good. Why would you rather have Avery
- 15:21Johnson? I think that I think he has a
- 15:24higher upside. He does I, I think he can say
- 15:26driving. Ability puts him over the top
- 15:28with when it comes to Rocco back.
- 15:30Are they going to run him new offensive line?
- 15:32And that's what I keep coming back to.
- 15:33Offensively, new offensive line, even if the all those transfers
- 15:36hit and we know at least one of them won't because he's not
- 15:37going to play the Ohio State transfer even if it all clicks
- 15:41in game one. Are they willing to run Avery
- 15:44Johnson 10/12/15 times if necessary?
- 15:48I think in normally in game one, the answer would be no, but in
- 15:51this case it's game one. Because of the implications of
- 15:53this game, I think you have to kind of change your way of
- 15:56looking at it. I mean, this, this is massive.
- 15:58This is massive. Oh, absolutely.
- 16:01It's a coin flip game early on, but they the good news for
- 16:06Kansas State is they scheduled the way you probably want to,
- 16:09right? You get a bye week or do they?
- 16:12No, they don't they they have North Dakota and then Army after
- 16:16that. What a weird schedule that they
- 16:18have too. Iowa State right back for North
- 16:22Dakota, who isn't bad themselves.
- 16:24Not North Dakota State. But not bad.
- 16:26And then Army and all the chop blocking that they're going to
- 16:28be doing against you. Maybe some tired legs here after
- 16:31the first couple of weeks of the season.
- 16:32I think for for both sides, the other component that I think if
- 16:36Iowa State is going to win this game as they're going to have to
- 16:40attack down the field. And you can throw the ball on.
- 16:43Them yes, a year ago Kansas State really struggled in the
- 16:46back end defensively, giving up big plays, blown assignments,
- 16:50just they were not a good pass defense a year ago.
- 16:53And though they had some guys up front, it was just they couldn't
- 16:56get there quick enough and that still is a concern.
- 16:59I know they went in the portal, they tried to do more.
- 17:02There was a freshman that was listed in their defensive
- 17:04backfield, true freshman in their 2 deep.
- 17:07We have to see right away because it has to be Townsend's
- 17:10ready to go and Soul's ready to go and whoever of the leftovers
- 17:14is there, are we going to see something out of be an Eli
- 17:16Green? They're going to have to do it.
- 17:17If I have a state wins this game though.
- 17:19You're going to do it through the air.
- 17:20It's not Carson Hansen going for 150 yards or a Boo Sama doing
- 17:24what he did against K State two years ago.
- 17:25I believe this is going to be a Rocco game.
- 17:28Rocco, you know, 28 of 35, 285 yards and three touchdowns, that
- 17:33type of performance, that's I think the game plan to get
- 17:36there. And also look back Matt
- 17:38Campbell. Does he have Chris Climbin's
- 17:40number? Remember how as of late, that's
- 17:43fair what's climbing in case they beat him twice in the
- 17:46Campbell era? Hasn't been a bunch, hasn't been
- 17:48a bunch, hasn't been a bunch and.
- 17:50What a bugaboo for a decade straight.
- 17:53Speaking of ways to lose football games, Iowa State
- 17:57against Kansas State, some of the most inexplicable dumb The
- 18:01game is salted away. Just run the ball.
- 18:04And they didn't. Where's the year?
- 18:06They're up like 24. Nothing at the half.
- 18:08They lost that one. There's been so many different
- 18:10ways that they found a way to. Lose the roads era.
- 18:12That was the roads era and that was even the McCarty era, that
- 18:15they had plenty of those. Now I think I'm ready to go
- 18:19there. Matt Campbell owns Chris,
- 18:21climbing 4 out of five. Did you do your predict
- 18:26prediction yet for the for for KX&O?
- 18:28Not haven't said it to Lucas. Yet I got him 7:00 and 5:00.
- 18:32Seven and five, OK. I came around on the South
- 18:34Dakota game. I I still think it's going to be
- 18:37tough. I think it's a coin flip game.
- 18:39Give me the 1213 points all day long.
- 18:43And you get more than that 15 and a half, 15.
- 18:44Now it's 15 1/2 more than two touchdowns.
- 18:47Yes, hate to say it, I won't bet the locals, but boy that sounds
- 18:50like a gift. No, I don't love them
- 18:54necessarily. I just love the spot that
- 18:56they're in. You have them one and two
- 18:58though. Yes.
- 18:59You have them one and two, they don't lose at Arkansas State.
- 19:02I looked Arkansas State's 5th, 5th in their division.
- 19:05So now I saw them picked in their division.
- 19:08Somebody has them picked to win their division.
- 19:10Well, somebody might be a dope, but the betting markets say
- 19:12they're the 5th best. That's the one I go.
- 19:13By betting markets say they're fifth in their division, so
- 19:17they're two and two in your scenario, Arizona at home.
- 19:22That's a win. I I put that as a win.
- 19:25Do they get at least one of the two Rd. games, Cincinnati and
- 19:27Colorado? I I I Yes, Cincinnati.
- 19:32They're beating BYU. Are they?
- 19:34Yes. Their quarterback was #47 did
- 19:38you see that? True freshman quarterback #47
- 19:44look, BYU, when Retzlaff was was the expected starter, was
- 19:50getting a lot of love to win the conference, To win the
- 19:53conference. Not there, nor am I.
- 19:59You like Arizona, I have them beating BYU.
- 20:02You like Arizona State more than I and.
- 20:03I picked them to lose to Arizona State.
- 20:05Go to TCU. Lose to TCU.
- 20:07They'll win their last two. They'll win their last two.
- 20:10So that's seven and five. Yep, I think it's higher then.
- 20:12I think it's eight and four, nine and three.
- 20:14Here's another thing, if you like Iowa State to make a run
- 20:17again this year, don't bet them to make the College Football
- 20:20Playoff. The odds you can get right now
- 20:22are like 9 to one. Just bet them to win the Big 12.
- 20:25Because that's their only path. At Circa now, it's up to 16 to 1
- 20:29for them to win the Big 12. I don't believe there's going to
- 20:32be multiple Big 12 teams in the playoff this year, so if you're
- 20:34going to bet this. Is great advice.
- 20:35Bet them to win the conference because that is the path.
- 20:39Yeah, there there's. You're not going to backdoor
- 20:40your way into the College Football Playoff.
- 20:42The Big 12 champion, at least as we see it, the Big 12 champion,
- 20:46just like last year, is getting in.
- 20:47Nobody else is. And for them to, I mean, it's
- 20:52the only way to bet it. Yeah, 9 to 1 or 16 to 1.
- 20:54You bet him to to win the conference.
- 20:56Take time out. More Iowa State conversation
- 20:58coming up next. Locked on cyclones.
- 21:02We look forward to that. We will take you until 2:00.
- 21:04Mitch Holtis is coming up, so Lee Sterling is going to join us
- 21:08tomorrow. Yes, I saw.
- 21:09Yeah, he's ready to go from Paramount.
- 21:10Sports. Yep, he's going to kick off his
- 21:12season. We'll preview the Iowa State
- 21:14Kansas State game with him and a couple of preseason news and
- 21:17notes that he has for college. Football.
- 21:18All right, that's good. That's and he'll join us every
- 21:20Thursday from now till the end of the college football season
- 21:24and be back for the NFL. We'll take your time out.
- 21:27NFL Super Bowl come back. You will be joined by locked on
- 21:31Cyclones Miller and Condon underway on a Wednesday, it's
- 21:34the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome
- 21:47back with you until 2:00. Mitch Holt is the voice of the
- 21:54Kansas City Chiefs coming up here at about 12:45 daily.
- 21:57Chiefs training camp report brought to us every single day
- 22:01by Papa John's. Let's talk some cyclones, shall
- 22:04we? Nix back from locked on
- 22:05cyclones.com. Hello Sir, how are you?
- 22:10Good. How are you?
- 22:11Doing well. Appreciate you coming on.
- 22:12Give us a little look see into this team and you know, Trent
- 22:15and I have been talking obviously a ton about it as
- 22:17everybody has. What's your biggest concern,
- 22:20Nick, when it comes to this group that is now on a plane
- 22:22headed over to Dublin position group?
- 22:25Nick, what's your main concern? I think my first stop would
- 22:31probably be wide receiver. Just looking at the depth chart,
- 22:34I know you don't put a ton of value into the OR with Iowa
- 22:36State here, but that whole position group is essentially an
- 22:40OR. So I'm very interested to see
- 22:42how that plays out. And I know Miller, you were
- 22:45saying the other day that that was your biggest deal, You lean
- 22:48Kansas State solely because of that.
- 22:51And I will say, yes, the wide receivers, slight concern there,
- 22:53but I think the tight ends pick it up just fine.
- 22:57Yeah, and you know, based on just the fact that 167
- 23:01receptions are now in the NFL and I and when it comes to the
- 23:05the newcomers, I wondered if Campbell is is in deference to
- 23:09the the guys that have been there, right.
- 23:12That that it may be soul, he may be the dude.
- 23:15We'll we'll see just listed ahead of some of the incumbents,
- 23:19but we'll find out. Yeah.
- 23:20And did you read anything into that, Nick having both Soul and
- 23:23Townsend listed as a backup after what we heard when both
- 23:26guys came in nothing but positive reviews.
- 23:29Do you think it's as simple as that?
- 23:30Put a little something out there for the guys that have been in
- 23:32the program much longer? That's kind of how I took it.
- 23:35I I was looking for patterns on there, didn't really find
- 23:38anything too crazy, but I did. I think it's Xavier Townsend is
- 23:42the starter at plant and kick returner, so I wonder if maybe
- 23:45that plays into it as well. He's going to be a utility guy
- 23:48for sure, so he'll be getting a ton of snaps.
- 23:50Yep, no doubt about it. Well, the running back position,
- 23:53Carson Hansen, I was surprised. The guy Abu Salman, I'm not that
- 23:57those two, but I just I kind of thought the River Peppers
- 24:01because every time Campbell talked about that position, his
- 24:03name came up and maybe he's going to play.
- 24:06But there's a couple of guys, a couple of young guys that have
- 24:09been in the program. Both have played Lil and Lee
- 24:11rather in Flora that listed above River Peppers.
- 24:14What does that mean in your mind?
- 24:17Well, I I thought the exact same thing.
- 24:18I actually thought you were going to ask about the top and I
- 24:20was going to point out River Peppers as well.
- 24:22I wonder if he'll be a special package guy because he was
- 24:25talked about and you know, kind of a passing back more so way.
- 24:29So we could see some packages where it's a little bit of a
- 24:32design screen situation for him. But I there were some really
- 24:37kind words about Lee and Flora towards the end of this this
- 24:40spring and fall. So I think they've probably got
- 24:44the right guys out there. River Peppers I'm sure has a lot
- 24:46of upside, but really we're kind of splitting hairs.
- 24:50I enhanced and and and Sama in my opinion.
- 24:53One other thing that I think jumped out and was a surprise to
- 24:55a lot of people, Alex Mansky being listed with Connor Moberly
- 24:59with the OR and in fact, Bansky was in front.
- 25:01Now it does sound like Moberly, maybe he was dealing with a
- 25:04little bit of injury during different times of camp and and
- 25:06maybe that was the reason that Mansky was up there higher than
- 25:09we anticipated after Rocco back. We know it's Rocco's job, but
- 25:12what was your take away with Mansky being listed there with
- 25:14Moberly? Yeah, I think Mansky has got all
- 25:17that it takes. I think they were talking about
- 25:20him and his mental progression. It seems like he's been in the
- 25:23program for years, knows the playbook in and out.
- 25:27So it does give me a little bit of, you know, sense of security
- 25:31knowing that we've got someone really solid behind Rocco.
- 25:33But obviously my focus is entirely on Rocco.
- 25:36I think it'll be, knock on wood, something terrible would have to
- 25:39happen for Rocco to not be the guy.
- 25:41Yeah. No doubt Nick Maravitz locked on
- 25:44cyclones.com. Nick, have have you gone on
- 25:46record yet as to how you see this game and how you see the
- 25:49season playing out? Are you going to wait to do
- 25:51that? I know you have to podcast each
- 25:52and every day. It locked on the Locked on
- 25:54network. Have you gone on record yet or
- 25:56when are you going to get to that part?
- 25:59I, I've made a prediction up for this game.
- 26:02I think Iowa State wins it and I think they win it by 11.
- 26:05I said 3120 on lockdown. College football came out today.
- 26:10I think that's probably a little bold.
- 26:11We know how tight Kansas State, Iowa State games are, but I
- 26:14think Iowa State significantly better.
- 26:16We haven't even talked about the defense of the linebackers.
- 26:18I think that's going to be the main point for Iowa State in
- 26:22this game as far as the season. After BYU named Bear Bachmeyer
- 26:25their starter, I gave Iowa State that one and said I honestly,
- 26:29genuinely think this. Their floor is a right around
- 26:32nine wins. I think they are.
- 26:34The floor is right. Well, not the ceiling, the
- 26:36floor. Their ceiling is probably 11.
- 26:40I don't know if they can go undefeated.
- 26:43Sure. I think they'll be in the Big 12
- 26:45Championship game again this year.
- 26:47Wow. Well, it's certainly a
- 26:49prediction. In order for that to happen,
- 26:51that defense and some of those young guys definitely got to
- 26:53take a step forward this year. When you look at this young
- 26:56group on the defensive side of the football, some questions
- 26:58certainly in the defensive backfield, outside of the top 2
- 27:02coming back that have played a lot of football with Cooper and
- 27:04with Williams, Who are some of the names that you like?
- 27:06Who are some of the guys that you've heard and and you're
- 27:08hopeful for that are going to have a big season on the
- 27:10defensive side? I believe it's Kamari Moore
- 27:13that's backing up Dom Orange. That's obviously we've heard a
- 27:16lot about. I I think that there's a lot of
- 27:18upside. They're still freshman, you
- 27:20know, still going to probably take a little bit to acclimate
- 27:22to the college speed of the game.
- 27:24But that's the guy I'm immediately looking at and it's
- 27:26hard to ignore. You know, obviously McLaughlin
- 27:29will Bacon love it at the linebacker.
- 27:31That's why I think the biggest narrative I've kind of picked
- 27:34out from this offseason is a lot of people are just forgetting
- 27:37the talent that's coming back from injury, not guys from the
- 27:40transfer portal, not guys that are coming, you know, in as
- 27:43freshman. It just seems that we forgot how
- 27:46injured this defense it was last year.
- 27:48Everyone wants to talk about how bad the run defense was.
- 27:50It's because we were. We were sending out guys that
- 27:53were 3rd, 4th stringers. Yeah, Fairpoint, another guy
- 27:57that looks as though he's going to have a major impact on this
- 28:00team. You don't give #58 out to, you
- 28:03know, to a backup, right? And and McDonough comes in, he's
- 28:06got he's got a year to play, obviously from the Ivy League.
- 28:10They love him. They're going to plug him in
- 28:11right away. Gave him Colin, our Curtis
- 28:13Bray's number in honor of, you know, like I said, not everybody
- 28:18gets to wear #58 it's chosen. So obviously they think a lot
- 28:22about him. What caught their eye leading up
- 28:25to this when it comes to McDonough?
- 28:27All we've heard all offseason is that this guy just moves
- 28:31differently. He he, he's got it, whatever it
- 28:34is. It took a while to get him into
- 28:35pads, you know, coming over from Yale.
- 28:38But even before he was actually kind of playing live, it was
- 28:42like this guy, look out for him. I don't know if it's the size or
- 28:46the speed or a combination of the both, but I think him and
- 28:49then Ike on the other side too in defensive line, I think it's
- 28:52going to be a lot better this year.
- 28:54Like do not sleep on their ability to get to the
- 28:56quarterback. Even though it doesn't seem like
- 28:59Matt Campbell's too worried about the number of sacks.
- 29:02We're going to find at some point today what it's going to
- 29:05look like with an injury report with Matt Campbell.
- 29:07And as we've tongue in cheek joked about a little bit, Matt
- 29:11Campbell's not exactly the most forthright coach out there as it
- 29:13pertains to injury. What do you expect to see
- 29:16whenever that release comes down?
- 29:18Are we going to get maybe all 105 guys that are going to be
- 29:20listed on the injury report? Is it going to be light?
- 29:23What What is your anticipation level, knowing that this is not
- 29:26exactly Matt Campbell's favorite topic?
- 29:29I would love to see every player listed as questionable, you
- 29:32know, like something just hilarious like that.
- 29:34I, I, I do wonder if there will be some gamesmanship with that.
- 29:37Obviously Campbell kind of alluded to that in his presser.
- 29:40And I think, you know, just based on what the way Iowa State
- 29:43runs everything, they'll be pretty straightforward with it
- 29:47and kind of play it as the season goes.
- 29:49But I heard you guys talking about the other day too, like
- 29:51what is the ramifications for for bending it a little bit is
- 29:55we don't really know at this point and there's no way it's
- 29:58anything severe as opposed post season ban, especially when you
- 30:00look at Michigan and it wasn't the players.
- 30:03Who were? Who were?
- 30:04Doing the cheating so they didn't get the, you know, the
- 30:08punishment. I think it's going to be the
- 30:09same thing like if Iowa State coaches make that call, it's
- 30:12going to be a fine and, and whatever we move on with it.
- 30:15So there is room I think for Iowa State to play around with
- 30:18that, but I I honestly don't think they will too much.
- 30:22Nick Maravich locked on cyclones.com.
- 30:24What time's your pod come out daily, Nick?
- 30:27If you listen 3 in the morning, if you watch 7.
- 30:32A night owl. Good stuff.
- 30:33A Nick Maravitz Locked on cyclones.com.
- 30:36Locked on cyclones.com Every single day content at Locked on
- 30:39cyclones.com. Nick, thanks for jumping on.
- 30:42Appreciate it. Yeah.
- 30:44Thank you, guys. Looking forward to the rest of
- 30:46the season. Good to talk to you.
- 30:47Thank you, Nick Maravitz as we check in on Iowa State.
- 30:50So it's thinks a lot of the squad.
- 30:54And you can buy it. 11:00 and 1:00. 9 I can get there.
- 31:01Best OK get me there. Get you there, Get to 9.
- 31:07Obviously the three, they're 4/4 and O, they're five and O, 5 and
- 31:10O With Arizona, they're five and one.
- 31:12Six and one City beat Colorado. Yeah, one of the two.
- 31:15Yep. They beat BYU next.
- 31:18Two lose to TCU, win last year. That's 10 and 2.
- 31:22Is that a stretch? I think so, but I mean.
- 31:27There's nothing that's unwinnable.
- 31:28No, yeah. No, there's no Penn State.
- 31:32There's. No.
- 31:32No, there's nothing there's that's fair, that's fair.
- 31:36They don't play a top ten team. They don't play a top 10.
- 31:40Who is their highest rank a couple year?
- 31:42Arizona State, right? And I don't think they're a top
- 31:4420 team, I don't think they'll end the season as a top 20 team.
- 31:47And Iowa State starts to 22 or 23.
- 31:50Depending, I think, on what pull you're looking at.
- 31:52OK, there's not a great team on this schedule.
- 31:56No, there's not an unwinnable game.
- 31:58Momentum is funny. Ball bounces are funny.
- 32:03But they bounced their way last year.
- 32:05It's fair, but it doesn't. As Nebraska knows, it doesn't
- 32:08always go one way and then even out.
- 32:10Yeah, yeah, they got because it has to be out in their favor
- 32:13then if it's that, if that's the case.
- 32:15It hasn't even out in 20 years for the Huskers, and maybe this
- 32:18is back-to-back years where the ball bounces their way.
- 32:21Talking season, Love it, love it, love it.
- 32:23We'll take a time out. Mitch Holtis will join us on the
- 32:26Kansas City Chiefs as they get set for their final pre season
- 32:30game. It is coming up this weekend.
- 32:33Miller and Condon take you until 2.
- 32:34David Kaplan will join in our number 2.
- 32:37He'll kick things off. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 32:40Network. I'm Hillary Condon.
- 32:45Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network daily Chiefs training
- 32:48camp report. Mitch Holtis joins us.
- 32:51Papa John's throughout the state of Iowa.
- 32:53Sponsor this more about that new special that we were made aware
- 32:59of late in yesterday's episode. Mitch is back with us.
- 33:02Mitch, good to speak with you. We'll save some time, obviously
- 33:05for that. We'll get to your sound today.
- 33:07Another impressive rookie trying to make an impact in year #1 in
- 33:11the league. But with preseason game #3 the
- 33:15final one coming up this Friday, it's against the Bears.
- 33:18Is this week any different now that you're getting through the
- 33:21end of preseason? And how will Andy Reid High
- 33:25handle week #3 has he let the let anybody know yet?
- 33:30Yeah, he kind of leaked it out a little bit and I just had a
- 33:33meeting this morning on that. The honestly, he's going to flip
- 33:38flop. What normally he would have is
- 33:40Week 2 and week 3. I told you guys last week
- 33:43because of a short week, because of the the field in Seattle that
- 33:48and we end up having some injured guys that he was going
- 33:51to play. He kept Mahomes out, Kelsey out,
- 33:54Chris Jones out, Mcduffie out, Bolton out.
- 33:56They'll play this week and I don't know how much they'll
- 33:59play, but I see them going into the second quarter.
- 34:02This week is different. It starts to assimilate a
- 34:04regular season week with the Saturday or Friday game.
- 34:08This then is a regular season Friday.
- 34:10That's the feeling of trying to get the guys into a rhythm.
- 34:13If here's what you do on an in season Friday, Thursday,
- 34:16Wednesday, etcetera. So yes, it does change and
- 34:20you've got to get guys, the rookies, I told you this draft
- 34:22class I like a lot and there's some undrafted free agents got
- 34:26like Cooper McDonald at a TCU has been good.
- 34:29But you want to get these rookies to start to get in a
- 34:32rhythm if you can. But Noel Williams is an
- 34:36interesting kid. Three years at UNLV corner super
- 34:40ball hawk again. He had four scooping scores in
- 34:42his college career. Then he transferred to Cal is
- 34:45last year. The guy had 14 career
- 34:48interceptions and his physical. But it's really interesting to
- 34:51hear what he had to say when I said, what do you want to get
- 34:54done here with the remainder of training camp?
- 34:57Putting yourself in uncomfortable situation so when
- 34:59the game comes, you know I can be ready for everything that's
- 35:03thrown at me and just keep learning in front of eds.
- 35:06Keep learning some new everyday and just keep pushing myself.
- 35:10You know this from your college career, but fits are like the
- 35:12fit. Where do you go?
- 35:13Do I fit at this place? What about your fit as a corner
- 35:17in this defense? And I'm going to ask you about
- 35:19special teams after that. When they put me in, you know,
- 35:22just be a physical presence, be, you know, not having to worry
- 35:27about my side knowing, knowing I got everything covered, just
- 35:31playing off everybody else good, you know, being where I'm
- 35:33supposed to be. So that's how I plan to fit in,
- 35:35you know, just making plays. Special teams awesome the other
- 35:38night. What about playing gunner and
- 35:40being like a big time gunner in this league?
- 35:43Yeah, special teams. Just another way for me to prove
- 35:46to myself I, you know, I can make plays on different phases
- 35:49and special, special teams is, you know, a big part of the
- 35:54game, you know, you know, that that can be a momentum shift or
- 35:57any part of the game. So I'm always, you know, I'm
- 36:00excited. Always want to make you guys
- 36:03feel like you're right. So when the orange of and it's
- 36:08right to speak from you, you're like, Oh my gosh.
- 36:11So anyway, but this kid, this kid, he's another one in this
- 36:15class, whether it's scrimmage downs or special teams, an
- 36:20immediate contributor and so far in the first two preseason
- 36:23games, now he's in concussion protocol right now.
- 36:25I don't think he'll play Friday night, but his first two
- 36:28preseason games he did exactly that.
- 36:30He made plays as both the corner and a special teams gunner on
- 36:35punt cover. You mentioned special teams and
- 36:38how Williams is going to probably fit in there.
- 36:41It goes to Dave Taub and a guy that is probably overlooked by
- 36:45most casual fans, don't even know who the special teams
- 36:48coordinator is. It was what, 7-8 years ago?
- 36:50He was up for a couple of head jobs.
- 36:51Never got it. I wanted my Bears, in fact, to
- 36:53get them. But that he is an excellent
- 36:57coach, though. What is it, though?
- 36:59Yeah, specialist is kind of where you get it and certainly
- 37:01kickers and you look at guys like what they've had there.
- 37:04But just what makes him such a good special team's coach where
- 37:07seemingly every single year everything is buttoned up for
- 37:10the Chiefs? Special teams meeting these
- 37:16creative trends like in Beyond 5 amendments.
- 37:24Hey Mitch, we're our connection's gone a little
- 37:27faulty. Hey there, Mitch, we're losing
- 37:31you, OK? Yeah, you broke up.
- 37:35We didn't hear any of your answer there.
- 37:36Let's we're going to try on another line.
- 37:40We'll call you right back. We'll call you right back.
- 37:42Yeah, We're having trouble. We can't put that on the air.
- 37:45So obviously, he's talked a lot about this draft cast, right.
- 37:48Josh Simmons looks as though he's going to fit in got him at
- 37:51the 32nd pick overall in the draft after they moved back from
- 37:5431. The only reason Simmons there
- 37:56because of an injury her from Gelada yesterday.
- 37:58Mitch Singh's Jalen Roll, the receiver from Utah State, his
- 38:02praise. Here's another one.
- 38:04This is what makes this team so difficult.
- 38:06They draft so well and over the last well, I don't know, 6-8,
- 38:10ten years, whatever it's been, they always draft at the end of
- 38:13every single round because they're one of the last teams
- 38:16playing and it looks as though they've done it again this year.
- 38:18Mitch, we lost you on that last one.
- 38:21Go ahead. We're good now.
- 38:23Fire away if you can. Creative.
- 38:27He's a mirror image to answer Trents question.
- 38:30He's a mirror image of Andy Reed in the realm of special teams,
- 38:34creative and thinks beyond like 5 dimensions.
- 38:37He's always come on up with something very unique that helps
- 38:40win games. And Trent, you can thank Dave
- 38:43Toe for getting you to the NFC Championship Game back with that
- 38:46year when you had Grossman, a quarterback, but he was Devin
- 38:49Hester's. He was his mentor.
- 38:53And the fact that that the Bears got there largely due to special
- 38:58teams is a big part of the Chiefs and having twelve
- 39:00straight winning seasons, they rarely make a mistake in special
- 39:04teams. And in many times they'll
- 39:06they'll capture the game because of it.
- 39:07So yeah, Dave tobes a big part of this discussion.
- 39:10And as we know, they seldom make a mistake on draft day as well.
- 39:13And you've talked about most of them in this draft class,
- 39:15whether you've you've spotlighted them or read they've
- 39:18just been mentioned from time to time.
- 39:20Mitch, got a minute left. Let's give it to the Donaldsons
- 39:23what they do, Papa John's, the new special, etcetera, etcetera
- 39:27for making this possible. The Chicago Bears are 501 in
- 39:36their last six preseason games. They have only one they're.
- 39:39Open five? Yeah, the teacher won five in
- 39:43the last five to six games. That makes me think of the five
- 39:46cheats. Oh yeah, Yep, Yep, 1/11/99.
- 39:53We're losing you again, Mitch, but we we heard it.
- 39:55We'll talk to you tomorrow. Thank you, Mitch.
- 39:57Appreciate it. He knew he was on the move today
- 39:59so. Sounds like he was on the move
- 40:01today. So unfortunate with the sound.
- 40:03Apologies for that, but special is out there.
- 40:06The five cheese. Tell us more about that
- 40:08tomorrow. I think it was 1199, the all in
- 40:12price for that. All right, we'll come back when
- 40:15head to Chicago. The cap man is next.
- 40:17David Kaplan joins us. Talk about the Cubs, talk about
- 40:20Caleb Williams and offense from Sunday night.
- 40:23Wow, Hour 2 on the horizon. Miller and Condon with you until
- 40:28two You're listening to the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
