- 0:00Speaker 1: Gospel reflection for the 21st day of October in the
- 0:03Speaker 1: year of our Lord, 2026. Today's reading comes from the
- 0:07Speaker 1: Gospel of Luke, chapter 12, verses 39 through 48. But
- 0:13Speaker 1: this know ye, that if the householder did know it,
- 0:16Speaker 1: what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and would not suffer his house be broken open. Be
- 0:23Speaker 1: you then also ready for at what hour you think
- 0:26Speaker 1: not the Son of Man will come. And Peter said
- 0:29Speaker 1: to him, Lord, dost thou speakest this parable to us,
- 0:32Speaker 1: or likewise to all? And the Lord said, Who thinkest
- 0:35Speaker 1: thou is the faithful and wise steward whom the Lord
- 0:38Speaker 1: setteth over his family, to give them their measure of
- 0:42Speaker 1: wheat in due season? Blessed is that servant whom, when
- 0:46Speaker 1: his Lord shall come, he shall find so doing. Verily
- 0:50Speaker 1: I say to you, he will set him over all
- 0:54Speaker 1: that he possesseth. But if that servant shall say to
- 0:59Speaker 1: him in his heart, My Lord is long coming, and
- 1:01Speaker 1: shall begin to strike the men servants and the maid servants,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and to eat and drink and be drunk, the Lord
- 1:07Speaker 1: of that servant will come in the day that he
- 1:10Speaker 1: hopeth not, at the hour that he knoweth not, and
- 1:14Speaker 1: shall separate him and shall appoint him his portion with unbelievers.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And that servant who knew well the will of his
- 1:22Speaker 1: Lord And prepared not himself, and did not according to
- 1:26Speaker 1: his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he
- 1:30Speaker 1: that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall
- 1:32Speaker 1: be beaten with few stripes. And unto whomever much is given,
- 1:37Speaker 1: of him much shall be required. And to whom they
- 1:40Speaker 1: have committed much, of him they will demand more. You know,
- 1:47Speaker 1: it's a grave duty. to be a priest. And the
- 1:49Speaker 1: responsibility of bishops, cardinals, and popes is even greater. Frankly,
- 1:54Speaker 1: I couldn't do it. I am glad that God did
- 1:57Speaker 1: not call me to the priesthood. Yes, I'm saying it.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I am not cut out to be a priest. So,
- 2:03Speaker 1: I mean, I get an email or a message at
- 2:06Speaker 1: least once a week saying, have you considered the priesthood? Yes,
- 2:08Speaker 1: I have, thank you. And I am unfit. I am unsuited.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I am not called. But my nature, my limitations, I'm
- 2:17Speaker 1: just not suited for such a great responsibility. I'm rebellious.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I'm Irish at heart. I'm part French. I am rebellious
- 2:26Speaker 1: by nature, and that alone would make it essentially impossible.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So that's, honestly, that's actually why I don't engage in
- 2:36Speaker 1: arguments with set of vacancies, so to say the seat
- 2:39Speaker 1: of Peter, the papacy is vacant. I am a more
- 2:42Speaker 1: traditional Catholic, and I prefer the Latin Mass, but I
- 2:46Speaker 1: don't accept their argument that the Pope's not the true Pope.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I understand why they say it, and I'm actually fairly
- 2:52Speaker 1: sympathetic to their arguments, and honestly, I probably side with
- 2:56Speaker 1: them on more issues than I did Pope Francis, but
- 2:59Speaker 1: I trust in Jesus' promise that the Pope is the Pope,
- 3:04Speaker 1: even if he's not a very good Pope. Now, Pope
- 3:06Speaker 1: Leo seems to be a little bit more along my
- 3:10Speaker 1: lines of thinking, but You know, when Pope Francis passed away,
- 3:15Speaker 1: people kept saying, who do you think is going to
- 3:16Speaker 1: be the next pope? And I would just simply answer,
- 3:18Speaker 1: the vicar of Christ. But who do you think it
- 3:21Speaker 1: will be? I think it will be the vicar of Christ.
- 3:24Speaker 1: It will be whomever the Holy Spirit has selected to
- 3:27Speaker 1: be the pope. And I will follow that pope implicitly, unquestioningly.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I mean, in matters of faith and doctrine. Now, everything
- 3:39Speaker 1: the pope says... is not infallible. Only when he sits
- 3:42Speaker 1: in the chair of Peter, in union with all the
- 3:44Speaker 1: bishops and cardinals and all that, then we have the
- 3:48Speaker 1: guarantee that the gates of hell will not prevail against
- 3:50Speaker 1: the church that Jesus Christ founded. But it's important to
- 3:54Speaker 1: remember when we discuss the leadership of the church that
- 3:57Speaker 1: even the Pope is only human. All humans are fallen
- 4:01Speaker 1: and flawed, and our Lord promised to prevent his church
- 4:04Speaker 1: from teaching error in matters of morals and doctrine. and
- 4:08Speaker 1: to preserve his church until the end of time. He
- 4:13Speaker 1: did not, absolutely did not, promise perfect people or that
- 4:17Speaker 1: individual popes, bishops, etc. would not hold and promote erroneous opinions.
- 4:23Speaker 1: That's why we have had some bad popes in the past,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and that should not surprise anyone. After all, Jesus chose
- 4:29Speaker 1: Judas to be his apostle. St. Peter makes clear that
- 4:34Speaker 1: this was an apostolic office when the Holy Apostle chose St.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Matthias to take his place in the choice of Judas.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Our Lord showed us that he would choose even evil
- 4:44Speaker 1: men to fill the highest offices in the church. This
- 4:48Speaker 1: is necessary for us, the faithful, to be reminded that
- 4:51Speaker 1: our faith is not in men, but in the church
- 4:54Speaker 1: established by Christ through his authority. We believe in the
- 4:57Speaker 1: Catholic Church because we believe in Jesus. It's really that simple.
- 5:02Speaker 1: If all the popes and bishops were saints, it would
- 5:04Speaker 1: be far too easy to put our faith in the
- 5:07Speaker 1: man as opposed to in God who established his office.
- 5:11Speaker 1: God always and often uses fallen, flawed, and evil men
- 5:19Speaker 1: to accomplish his greater good purpose. Judas being the perfect example.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Were it not for Judas, think about this, were it
- 5:28Speaker 1: not for Judas betraying Jesus. Jesus would not have been
- 5:32Speaker 1: crucified and we would have no means to salvation. So,
- 5:36Speaker 1: next time you think, oh, the Pope said something and
- 5:39Speaker 1: I'm just so scandalized by it. Well, get over it.
- 5:42Speaker 1: The Pope's the Pope. We respect his office even if
- 5:45Speaker 1: we don't understand or really like the man in that office.
- 5:51Speaker 1: And that's okay. Pray for him. That's all the Bible
- 5:54Speaker 1: tells us to do is pray and obey. Pray for
- 5:57Speaker 1: our leaders and obey them. The Pope will not teach
- 6:02Speaker 1: anything that is in opposition to the will of God.
- 6:06Speaker 1: He will be prevented from doing so by the Holy Spirit.
- 6:10Speaker 1: That is an official doctrine, faith and morals, doctrine of
- 6:14Speaker 1: the church. He could say the sky is purple and
- 6:18Speaker 1: the earth is, I don't know, pick a color, black. Well,
- 6:22Speaker 1: dirt is black. The earth is whistling. Okay, if he
- 6:26Speaker 1: said that, that would just be a crazy statement. That
- 6:28Speaker 1: would not affect our our doctrine as Catholics. The Pope
- 6:35Speaker 1: could say he personally felt that some issue that we
- 6:41Speaker 1: would be very scandalized by, he had an opinion on
- 6:44Speaker 1: it that would differ from the doctrine of the Church.
- 6:46Speaker 1: He could actually say that, so long as he does
- 6:49Speaker 1: not change the doctrine of the Church. And he actually
- 6:51Speaker 1: doesn't have the power to do that by himself anyway.
- 6:53Speaker 1: So don't worry about it, honestly. So how do we
- 6:57Speaker 1: react when our Pope's imperfect? Well, again, we must pray
- 7:00Speaker 1: for him. Pray that the Holy Spirit will keep him
- 7:02Speaker 1: from formally teaching error. Pray that the Holy Spirit will
- 7:05Speaker 1: guide him in the fullness of the truth. Pray for
- 7:07Speaker 1: his health, his safety, and his intentions. Trust that God
- 7:11Speaker 1: will fulfill his promises. And always remember, always remember, that
- 7:17Speaker 1: God used even Judas to accomplish the greatest good in
- 7:21Speaker 1: the history of the universe. Remember, it took the Blessed
- 7:26Speaker 1: Virgin Mary saying yes, and it took Judas' betrayal. All
- 7:32Speaker 1: the others, you know, except for St. Peter, were almost like,
- 7:37Speaker 1: you know, background cast members in this great play that
- 7:40Speaker 1: played out, you know? But anyway, the church has had
- 7:44Speaker 1: some bad popes, and as I said, it's very rare,
- 7:49Speaker 1: very rare circumstance, and when there have arised, there's always
- 7:53Speaker 1: been a Swinging back of the pendulum, God has used
- 7:58Speaker 1: that very rare circumstance to accomplish much greater good than
- 8:02Speaker 1: any temporal damage a mere man could do. So, why
- 8:07Speaker 1: do we believe anything? Think about it. Why do we
- 8:10Speaker 1: believe anything in the Bible? I know, I guess it
- 8:12Speaker 1: was Augustine. St. Augustine said he wouldn't believe the Gospels
- 8:15Speaker 1: unless the Church told him they were true. That makes sense.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Where did he get the Bible from? Where the Catholic
- 8:20Speaker 1: Church gave it? his predecessors, the Bible, and he inherited
- 8:25Speaker 1: the Bible from the Catholic Church, and the only way
- 8:28Speaker 1: he knew the books of the Bible were true and
- 8:30Speaker 1: actually written by the actual, you know, apostles and witnesses
- 8:33Speaker 1: and St. Luke and all that to the events that
- 8:36Speaker 1: happened was because it was guaranteed to be true by
- 8:38Speaker 1: the Catholic Church. Otherwise, how do you say, well, I
- 8:42Speaker 1: think the Bible is more true than the Book of Mormon?
- 8:45Speaker 1: You know, that's a big issue for Mormons, especially. But
- 8:50Speaker 1: we have the Bible because the Catholic Church gave it
- 8:53Speaker 1: to us, and the Catholic Church guarantees it to be true.
- 8:56Speaker 1: We are taught by the Catholic Church that the Holy
- 8:58Speaker 1: Spirit is essentially the author through various men who wrote
- 9:02Speaker 1: the Bible, and that everything in the Bible is true. So,
- 9:07Speaker 1: the most unbelievable statements in the Bible we believe to
- 9:11Speaker 1: be true because we know God's the author and God
- 9:13Speaker 1: can't lie. If he did, he wouldn't be God. So,
- 9:17Speaker 1: when Jesus says, truly... You must eat my flesh and
- 9:20Speaker 1: drink my blood to have eternal life. We can't understand that.
- 9:24Speaker 1: But when he says, this bread is my body and
- 9:27Speaker 1: this wine is my blood, this drink is my blood,
- 9:30Speaker 1: we know that somehow, through what the church calls transubstantiation,
- 9:34Speaker 1: the bread turns into the body of Christ, the wine
- 9:36Speaker 1: turns into the blood of Christ, spiritually, not physically. The
- 9:41Speaker 1: Bible barely mentions the Trinity. You know, Jesus said, baptize
- 9:45Speaker 1: in the name of the Father, the Son, and the
- 9:46Speaker 1: Holy Spirit. The church teaches the Trinity. We believe it
- 9:48Speaker 1: to be true even though no human mind on earth
- 9:51Speaker 1: can fully understand the Trinity because God said it. We
- 9:55Speaker 1: believe that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. Why do
- 9:58Speaker 1: we believe it? Because the church teaches it to us.
- 10:03Speaker 1: If you at any point in time say, you know,
- 10:06Speaker 1: I've lost faith in the Catholic church. I don't believe
- 10:10Speaker 1: what the Catholic church teaches. Upon what do you put
- 10:15Speaker 1: any belief in the Bible? Well, or in the God
- 10:19Speaker 1: of the Bible. The whole thing begins to unravel, and
- 10:23Speaker 1: that's the fatal flaw of Protestantism. Anyway, y'all, have a
- 10:27Speaker 1: good one, and I will talk to you next time.
