- 1:29Speaker 8: Zone eleven fifty AM ninety three point seven FM. Caleb
- 1:32Speaker 8: Rapley here filling in for Chip on this Thursday. It
- 1:36Speaker 8: is July ninth. Happy birthday to Tom Hanks. We've got
- 1:40Speaker 8: a lot to talk about here today as we continue
- 1:44Speaker 8: to make our way through the dog days of summer.
- 1:49Speaker 8: Coming up at four fifteen, the second segment of the show, we.
- 1:52Speaker 5: Will have a listen in.
- 1:54Speaker 8: We're gonna hear what former Texas A and M offensive
- 1:57Speaker 8: coordinator now the head coach of Kansas State, Colin Klein.
- 2:02Speaker 8: We're gonna hear what he had to say at Big
- 2:04Speaker 8: twelve Media Days yesterday. We're gonna get into a little
- 2:08Speaker 8: bit of an MLB Draft preview and all the other
- 2:11Speaker 8: festivities that are going on during the MLB All Star
- 2:15Speaker 8: Week with the you know, obviously the All Star Game
- 2:18Speaker 8: Home run derby, but also the All Star Futures Game
- 2:21Speaker 8: with some of the top prospects in MLB organizations, along
- 2:27Speaker 8: with the Celebrity Softball Game, which is always a lot
- 2:29Speaker 8: of fun.
- 2:30Speaker 5: The final segment of the.
- 2:32Speaker 8: Four o'clock hour, we will hear producer Riley's interview with
- 2:36Speaker 8: the head coach of the Brass Valley Bombers that she
- 2:39Speaker 8: does every week with the head coach, Ryan Targoch, former
- 2:42Speaker 8: Aggie baseball player Ryan Targoch, So that's coming up.
- 2:46Speaker 5: At the end of the hour. At five o'clock, we
- 2:50Speaker 5: will have.
- 2:52Speaker 8: The president of the Reed Rowdies student organization in the studio,
- 2:57Speaker 8: mister Ren Delos Santos. I'm gonna talk all about what
- 3:01Speaker 8: Reid Rowdies is and do a little bit of preview
- 3:05Speaker 8: for the Aggie volleyball and Aggie men's basketball season as well.
- 3:09Speaker 8: Wren will be with us for most of the hour,
- 3:12Speaker 8: and to close out the show, we're gonna hear from
- 3:16Speaker 8: Aggie basketball player Caid Phillips. There was a media availability
- 3:20Speaker 8: earlier in the week. Bucky McMillan, the head coach, along
- 3:23Speaker 8: with Caid spoke to the media, so we're gonna hear
- 3:26Speaker 8: what Cad had to say. I'm really excited to see
- 3:30Speaker 8: him play this year, but we will get into that
- 3:34Speaker 8: later in the show. The World Cup quarterfinal round is
- 3:38Speaker 8: now underway. France and Morocco are at halftime zero zero.
- 3:44Speaker 5: The score there.
- 3:46Speaker 8: France obviously the heavy favorite and also the betting favorite
- 3:51Speaker 8: to win the whole thing. Right now, I think it's
- 3:55Speaker 8: around plus two hundred plus one eighty four. France is
- 4:00Speaker 8: favored to win the World Cup among the eight teams remaining,
- 4:04Speaker 8: and they're really heavy favorites in this game against Morocco.
- 4:08Speaker 8: But zero zero halftime Morocco holding their own, So that's
- 4:13Speaker 8: shaping up to be a really good match.
- 4:16Speaker 5: See who comes out on top. Later in the day.
- 4:20Speaker 8: Texas A and M Baseball continues their run of just
- 4:24Speaker 8: dominating the transfer portal. Another pitcher commits to the Aggies,
- 4:30Speaker 8: a left handed pitcher from Lamar University, Jarrett Williams three
- 4:37Speaker 8: eight to three ER, fifty two strikeouts across fifty six
- 4:42Speaker 8: innings of work in twenty twenty six, the seventh pitcher
- 4:47Speaker 8: to transfer to Texas A and M in the portal
- 4:49Speaker 8: this year. So new pitching coach Barry Enwright has never
- 4:53Speaker 8: really had to do recruiting before. He's more of a
- 4:56Speaker 8: professional baseball type of guy until the Aggi's hired him,
- 4:59Speaker 8: but they've done a really good job. Him and coach Early,
- 5:03Speaker 8: along with Nolan Kin, have done a really good job
- 5:06Speaker 8: in the transfer portal this summer. Really excited to see
- 5:12Speaker 8: when fallball rolls around, we get to see some of
- 5:14Speaker 8: these new guys for the first time, and then this
- 5:17Speaker 8: twenty twenty seven season is shaping up to be a really,
- 5:20Speaker 8: really solid squad for the Aggies. In other baseball news,
- 5:28Speaker 8: Justin Verlander, absolute legend of Major League Baseball, has announced
- 5:33Speaker 8: that he will retire at the end of the twenty
- 5:35Speaker 8: twenty six season. Three time Cy Young Award winner Verlander
- 5:42Speaker 8: one of the greatest pitchers of all time. He was
- 5:45Speaker 8: named to this year's All Star team as a Legend pick.
- 5:49Speaker 8: He's barely pitched this year, but this legend designation is
- 5:53Speaker 8: something that has been introduced over the last few years
- 5:56Speaker 8: and it's a really cool way to see some of
- 5:59Speaker 8: the top legends of our sport get to go out
- 6:04Speaker 8: in one of their in their in his final season
- 6:06Speaker 8: as an All Star take part in those festivities. So
- 6:09Speaker 8: that'll be fun to watch, but it'll be it'll be
- 6:13Speaker 8: very different. Justin Verlander has been in Major League Baseball
- 6:16Speaker 8: longer than I've been alive. Uh So I think that's
- 6:19Speaker 8: he's one of the last players that can say that.
- 6:25Speaker 8: Was obviously an absolute icon in the Houston Astros uniform,
- 6:30Speaker 8: helped lead us to our first ever World Series championship
- 6:35Speaker 8: back in twenty seventeen. Obviously, there's a lot of controversy
- 6:38Speaker 8: associated with that one, but they still won it, and
- 6:41Speaker 8: they haven't taken the trophy away, so we still get
- 6:44Speaker 8: to claim it. Verlander was acquired in a mid season
- 6:50Speaker 8: trade in twenty seventeen, finished out that season the only
- 6:55Speaker 8: five He only made five regular season starts in an
- 6:57Speaker 8: Astros uniform in twenty seventeen, but it was absolutely dominant,
- 7:03Speaker 8: a one point six ERA five and zero record and
- 7:08Speaker 8: ended up winning the World Series that year.
- 7:09Speaker 5: He was definitely a big catalyst on that team. So
- 7:13Speaker 5: sad to see him go.
- 7:14Speaker 8: He was also a big part of the twenty twenty
- 7:16Speaker 8: two World Series team for the Astros. But congrats on
- 7:21Speaker 8: a great career to Justin Verlander. Be interesting to see
- 7:25Speaker 8: what he does in his retirement. I'm sure he'll spend
- 7:29Speaker 8: a lot of time with his family, but I wonder
- 7:30Speaker 8: if he'll stay around the game at all, but we
- 7:33Speaker 8: will see news in the high school baseball world, which
- 7:39Speaker 8: is not something he gets talked about very much nationally,
- 7:41Speaker 8: but has been trending over the last day or so.
- 7:46Speaker 8: Yesterday it was announced that the high school baseball bat
- 7:50Speaker 8: regulations are going to have some big changes coming. So currently,
- 7:56Speaker 8: high school and college bat regulations are the same. Players
- 8:01Speaker 8: are required to swing a bat that is a drop
- 8:04Speaker 8: three and meets the bbcore requirement. If you don't know
- 8:08Speaker 8: what the drop three means, basically you have the length
- 8:13Speaker 8: of the bat is. The length of the bat is
- 8:15Speaker 8: measured in inches, So if you have a thirty three
- 8:18Speaker 8: inch bat, which is probably about the average length for
- 8:24Speaker 8: that's used in college baseball, drop three would mean the
- 8:28Speaker 8: length is thirty three and then the weight of the bat,
- 8:32Speaker 8: which is measured in ounces, is thirty ounces, So thirty
- 8:35Speaker 8: three thirty is a drop three bat. What is happening
- 8:39Speaker 8: now is that in high school anyway, they are going
- 8:43Speaker 8: to expand what is allowed in that weight ratio, so
- 8:51Speaker 8: up to a drop six is going to be allowed
- 8:54Speaker 8: starting in twenty twenty eight, So these players are going
- 8:57Speaker 8: to be able to swing bats that are a lot
- 8:59Speaker 8: lighter that's going to check change their bat speed and
- 9:02Speaker 8: probably home run distance and exit velocity as well. I've
- 9:06Speaker 8: seen a lot of people say they're concerned about player
- 9:10Speaker 8: safety just because of how hard some of the balls
- 9:13Speaker 8: are going to be flying off of those bats with
- 9:16Speaker 8: the lighter weight. So it will be very interesting to
- 9:18Speaker 8: see how this impacts the game. This is not changing
- 9:22Speaker 8: anything for college. College is going to say how it is.
- 9:25Speaker 8: This is only for high school, but there are still
- 9:28Speaker 8: plenty of players in high school that are strong enough
- 9:33Speaker 8: to swing a lighter bat hard enough to really hurt somebody.
- 9:38Speaker 8: So we will see if any regulations get changed on
- 9:42Speaker 8: the player safety side of things in reaction to this.
- 9:45Speaker 8: But this is definitely going to have an interesting impact
- 9:48Speaker 8: on high school baseball starting in twenty twenty eight, so
- 9:52Speaker 8: there will be one more season of the current regulations
- 9:57Speaker 8: and these new ones will go into effect twenty twenty eight,
- 10:01Speaker 8: so it's going to be really interesting to see how
- 10:03Speaker 8: all that plays out. In NBA news, the Kawhi Leonard
- 10:08Speaker 8: trade is currently on hold. He was announced that the
- 10:13Speaker 8: Clippers would be sending him to the Toronto Raptors in
- 10:16Speaker 8: exchange for brandon Ingram Greedy Dick two unprotected first round picks,
- 10:21Speaker 8: a first round pick swap, and two second round picks.
- 10:25Speaker 8: But the NBA is investigating the salary, the salary cap
- 10:33Speaker 8: Shenanigans that the Clippers have been getting up to. Allegedly,
- 10:37Speaker 8: the NBA thinks that they might have been funneling money
- 10:40Speaker 8: or that the Clippers might have been funneling money to
- 10:42Speaker 8: Leonard through a third party so as to not go
- 10:46Speaker 8: over the salary cap, and they were paying most of
- 10:48Speaker 8: his money through a different company, again allegedly, So I'm
- 10:54Speaker 8: not exactly sure how that's going to affect whether or
- 10:57Speaker 8: not he is allowed to be traded or if he
- 10:59Speaker 8: will be so, but this is pretty big news.
- 11:04Speaker 5: In the NBA world.
- 11:09Speaker 8: Morocco and France are now back to action in the
- 11:11Speaker 8: forty sixth minute, still zero zero ninety eight degrees is
- 11:18Speaker 8: the feel like temperature there, so you know those players
- 11:20Speaker 8: are sweating. Lebron James has The suitors for Lebron James
- 11:30Speaker 8: have supposedly narrowed down to just a few teams now,
- 11:33Speaker 8: with Schams Sharania saying that the main teams in the
- 11:37Speaker 8: mix to land Lebron are the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Miami Heat,
- 11:44Speaker 8: the Golden State Warriors, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Philadelphia
- 11:48Speaker 8: seventy six.
- 11:49Speaker 5: Ers, and there's been a lot of buzz.
- 11:54Speaker 8: There was a lot of buzz right after he announced
- 11:57Speaker 8: he wouldn't be returning to the Lakers, that he would
- 11:59Speaker 8: be going to the Warriors, and that the Warriors would
- 12:02Speaker 8: be acquiring Anthony Davis. I don't believe that the eight
- 12:06Speaker 8: trade is going to happen now, so that kind of
- 12:11Speaker 8: I think that lowers the Warriors' chances of getting Lebron
- 12:14Speaker 8: and they just had some big resignings that are gonna
- 12:19Speaker 8: make the salary cap again pretty difficult to deal with.
- 12:22Speaker 8: But it would be a lot of fun to see
- 12:23Speaker 8: him play with Steph Curry and Draymond Green. They would
- 12:26Speaker 8: also be probably the oldest starting five in the league,
- 12:29Speaker 8: but that would be a lot of fun to watch.
- 12:32Speaker 8: The Heat obviously are getting a lot of buzz. He's
- 12:34Speaker 8: played there before. But I really do think it's gonna
- 12:37Speaker 8: end up being the Cleveland Cavaliers. I think he wants
- 12:40Speaker 8: to end his career where he started it, maybe win
- 12:43Speaker 8: one more chip for the land as they call it.
- 12:46Speaker 8: But I think my pick is Cleveland. I think that
- 12:51Speaker 8: all these other teams are just a lot of smoking mirrors.
- 12:54Speaker 8: I think it will end up being the calves and
- 12:56Speaker 8: with that, we're gonna take our first break. When we
- 12:58Speaker 8: come back, we will hear from the head coach of
- 13:01Speaker 8: the Kansas State Wildcats football team, Colin Klein. You're listening
- 13:05Speaker 8: to Chip Howard Sports Talk Caleb filling in today on

- 14:02Speaker 5: That's my I'm not telling coach Oko to listen to me.
- 14:05Speaker 13: I just I made suggestions.
- 14:08Speaker 12: The three guys that I thought they should bring in,
- 14:10Speaker 12: Marcel was one of them. Okay, yeah, Plus, look you
- 14:14Speaker 12: said it earlier. You think he can be a Heisman
- 14:16Speaker 12: Trophy candidate. One of the things you need to do
- 14:19Speaker 12: if you got a hydromotrophy candidate in a and M
- 14:21Speaker 12: did send out those mailouts last year, is you need
- 14:26Speaker 12: to get him out there in front of people. Yeah,
- 14:29Speaker 12: so I would think Marcel should be should be there.
- 14:32Speaker 5: Yeah, well I have in front of me.
- 14:35Speaker 12: Well, I think that Mario Craver is the best player
- 14:37Speaker 12: on the team, So I think Mario Craver should be there.
- 14:41Speaker 12: I mean, here's a guy that had almost a thousand
- 14:42Speaker 12: yards receiving and probably would have had he not missed
- 14:45Speaker 12: one full game and part of another. One of the
- 14:47Speaker 12: more dynamic players in college football.

- 15:12Speaker 15: We are always running, always pushing up the heel, searching
- 15:21Speaker 15: calling attend Watson.
- 15:26Speaker 16: Fun of.
- 15:29Speaker 8: Welcome back to Chip Howard Sports Talk here on the
- 15:31Speaker 8: Zone eleven fifty A ninety three point seven FM. This
- 15:35Speaker 8: portion of our program brought to you by Chad Jones Law.
- 15:38Speaker 8: I'm Caleb Rapley filling in for Chip today and we're
- 15:43Speaker 8: going to get into our first listening. Kansas State Wildcats
- 15:48Speaker 8: football head coach Colin Klein, formerly the offensive coordinator of
- 15:53Speaker 8: the Texas A and m Aggies, was part of the
- 15:57Speaker 8: Aggies run.
- 15:58Speaker 5: To the College Football Playoff in twenty two.
- 16:02Speaker 8: And now takes back over takes over at Kansas State,
- 16:06Speaker 8: where he was a Heisman candidate back in twenty twelve,
- 16:10Speaker 8: played quarterback for the Wildcats, was a finalist alongside Johnny Manziel.
- 16:14Speaker 8: Obviously Manziel ended up winning that then was an assistant
- 16:19Speaker 8: at Kansas State before being hired to come to College
- 16:23Speaker 8: Station to be the offensive coordinator for the Aggies for
- 16:25Speaker 8: a few years, and now goes back to Kansas State
- 16:27Speaker 8: to take take the head job, which I think is
- 16:30Speaker 8: probably what he always wanted to do. If I had
- 16:32Speaker 8: to guess this is it's just a perfect fit. Played
- 16:35Speaker 8: quarterback for the school, was an assistant for a long time,
- 16:39Speaker 8: now gets the opportunity to lead the program. And I
- 16:42Speaker 8: think Kansas State has kind of had a history over
- 16:45Speaker 8: these last few coaches that they've had to have very
- 16:49Speaker 8: long tenures, and with Klein being as young as he is,
- 16:54Speaker 8: I think that he probably will end up leading this
- 16:57Speaker 8: team for a long time, assuming.
- 16:59Speaker 5: That he does a decent jo and I think he
- 17:00Speaker 5: probably will.
- 17:02Speaker 8: The Big Twelve is a league that you know, will
- 17:05Speaker 8: kind of allow him to have some time to get
- 17:08Speaker 8: his footing. And he's only thirty six years old, which
- 17:11Speaker 8: is pretty is very young for a head coach in
- 17:14Speaker 8: any sport. But if he does a good job out there,
- 17:17Speaker 8: which I think he will, he probably will be be
- 17:21Speaker 8: out there for a long time. But let's hear what
- 17:22Speaker 8: he had to say at Big twelve Media Days yesterday.
- 17:25Speaker 8: Here's Colin Klein.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Thank you all for being here, Thank you for all
- 17:29Speaker 4: that you do for the greatest sport in the world.
- 17:32Speaker 4: It's great to be back in the Big twelve. I
- 17:35Speaker 4: grew up a Big twelve kid, and being able to
- 17:38Speaker 4: be part of this conference as a fan, as a player,
- 17:42Speaker 4: as a coach and now being part of helping move
- 17:46Speaker 4: our game and our conference forward is absolutely tremendous to
- 17:49Speaker 4: be a part of. I thank the Lord every day
- 17:51Speaker 4: that I get to come to work at a place
- 17:53Speaker 4: that has impacted my life tremendously, and our program at
- 17:57Speaker 4: Kansas State, my two predecessors have been so much. Uh
- 18:04Speaker 4: it's been so much bigger than just the game of football.
- 18:07Speaker 4: And yes, we're going to do football well, but the
- 18:10Speaker 4: impact of that we want to have and that they
- 18:14Speaker 4: have had on young men and uh setting the trajectory
- 18:17Speaker 4: for the rest of their life at an incredible angle.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Being able to teach them the lessons and and give
- 18:24Speaker 4: them the opportunity to compete is something that that I
- 18:28Speaker 4: don't take for granted.
- 18:29Speaker 13: This is this is home for me.
- 18:31Speaker 4: It's it's a dream come true. And UH so grateful
- 18:35Speaker 4: for our administration, our players, and all the effort that
- 18:39Speaker 4: that has been put in in the last six months
- 18:42Speaker 4: as we build this thing and and move it forward
- 18:45Speaker 4: and have four of our players with us here today,
- 18:49Speaker 4: and just how they have have led our football team
- 18:52Speaker 4: and bought into what what we are doing and what
- 18:55Speaker 4: we are building is absolutely tremendous. It's incredibly exciting for
- 18:59Speaker 4: for the future of Kansas State football, and I'm excited
- 19:04Speaker 4: for the season to get started.
- 19:05Speaker 13: Her well, sir, with a center left second.
- 19:07Speaker 17: Brock coming Barry tram or Tulso. You mentioned your two
- 19:11Speaker 17: precessor quarterback for one coach for the other great success.
- 19:17Speaker 17: How much will you rely on what you learned from
- 19:21Speaker 17: each and sort of putting your inpred.
- 19:23Speaker 18: On the program.
- 19:26Speaker 4: I think it's an incredible situation top to bottom. I think,
- 19:31Speaker 4: starting most recently with coach Climban, I think our relationship
- 19:35Speaker 4: is very unique. I think it's very genuine. I think
- 19:38Speaker 4: both of us have come at everything through the different
- 19:41Speaker 4: course of our professional journey what is best for the
- 19:48Speaker 4: other person.
- 19:48Speaker 13: And I think that is something that again I don't
- 19:52Speaker 13: take for granted.
- 19:53Speaker 4: He's been there every step of the way if I've
- 19:56Speaker 4: needed something or had a question with I know my
- 20:01Speaker 4: and our program's best interest at heart.
- 20:05Speaker 13: Coach Snyders has been tremendous.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Again, I'd be here all day if I was going
- 20:12Speaker 4: to go through all the ways that his fingerprints had
- 20:16Speaker 4: been on my life and probably a big reason I
- 20:18Speaker 4: got into coaching. You know, to be perfectly honest with
- 20:20Speaker 4: you and all of those little things that I didn't
- 20:24Speaker 4: even know he was teaching me at the time. Being
- 20:27Speaker 4: able to apply those and have those come to fruition
- 20:30Speaker 4: through the course of my journey is incredible.
- 20:34Speaker 13: Center right, second row, Coach Lane hearing to stay Alive?
- 20:37Speaker 13: Power five?
- 20:37Speaker 19: How you doing today? How you doing?
- 20:39Speaker 13: I'm good.
- 20:40Speaker 16: Welcome back to the Big twelve. So you're back at
- 20:44Speaker 16: Kansas State in the world where it's like costs you
- 20:48Speaker 16: a lot of money to you know, get quarterbacks from
- 20:50Speaker 16: the transfer portal. However, he was able to retain Avery Johnson,
- 20:54Speaker 16: who seems like he fits your style of offense to
- 20:56Speaker 16: a t with this breathtaking mobility, quick release. You know,
- 21:00Speaker 16: his style of play is similar to marsaw Ree where
- 21:03Speaker 16: you are officeive coordinator at Texas A and M last year.
- 21:06Speaker 16: Can you talk about the value that Avery Johnson brings
- 21:08Speaker 16: to the office.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Well, Avery and I's relationship goes back a long way.
- 21:14Speaker 4: It's incredibly special to me. And you know, I would
- 21:20Speaker 4: argue that some of his best attributes are not physical.
- 21:24Speaker 4: And I know everyone sees how fast he is and
- 21:26Speaker 4: how fasty and and how well he can run. Everybody
- 21:29Speaker 4: sees the arm talent and the zip and spin on
- 21:32Speaker 4: the football. He's one of the best competitors I've been around,
- 21:36Speaker 4: and he works hard at his craft, and he's a
- 21:41Speaker 4: very stoic, laid back guy. But those you know that
- 21:44Speaker 4: that processor is going and his motor's going hot under there,
- 21:48Speaker 4: even though he is very, very calm and collected on top.
- 21:51Speaker 13: And I think that's what why we got so close
- 21:55Speaker 13: and why we think because that gives me energy every
- 21:58Speaker 13: day working.
- 21:59Speaker 4: With him and as we have in the past and now,
- 22:02Speaker 4: and I know that's what he gets from me too,
- 22:04Speaker 4: because we care about We both loved the game of football,
- 22:07Speaker 4: we both love competing and winning, and we both love
- 22:11Speaker 4: team and that's a good combination.
- 22:14Speaker 13: It's again a privilege to be back.
- 22:17Speaker 4: The history we have, I think has given us a
- 22:19Speaker 4: head start to be able to get back thinking the
- 22:22Speaker 4: same way and on the same page, to do what
- 22:24Speaker 4: we want to do and excited for the future.
- 22:28Speaker 8: Center right there, Rope Hey, Colin, Colin Wilson with the
- 22:32Speaker 8: Action Network.
- 22:33Speaker 13: Not too many of us.
- 22:34Speaker 20: Jordan Peterson comes with you as your defense coordinator from
- 22:37Speaker 20: Texas A and M, but he had some time at
- 22:38Speaker 20: Kansas before that.
- 22:40Speaker 13: How much of this defense will be the four two.
- 22:42Speaker 21: Five alco nastiness, stop the run.
- 22:45Speaker 22: Everything that they have, will it resemble that or something
- 22:48Speaker 22: different to matchup personnel.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Well, I think in today's world of college football, and
- 22:53Speaker 4: something that was very very important to me as I
- 22:57Speaker 4: was putting our staff together, and then also Jordan and
- 23:01Speaker 4: I talking and then me and envisioning that position in
- 23:04Speaker 4: general is in today's world, you have to be multiple,
- 23:09Speaker 4: and you have to present different pictures, different fronts, and
- 23:12Speaker 4: so our ability to be multiple was important. With his
- 23:17Speaker 4: experience level in the different places that he's been feel
- 23:21Speaker 4: very very confident that we're going to be able to
- 23:22Speaker 4: put the package together that will fit our personnel and
- 23:26Speaker 4: also be multiple.
- 23:30Speaker 13: Central Epe second.
- 23:30Speaker 6: Mark Mikayla Booker D two ten sports How much for
- 23:35Speaker 6: you is when you took over as head coach, what's
- 23:38Speaker 6: the first thing you wanted to preserve for the team
- 23:41Speaker 6: And the first thing you wanted.
- 23:42Speaker 13: Is to change the transition.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Timing is crazy in college football right now because you're
- 23:49Speaker 4: doing ten thousand different things, and when you're in the
- 23:51Speaker 4: middle of getting ready for a playoff game while starting
- 23:55Speaker 4: to put together staff, start to trying to hold together
- 23:59Speaker 4: for the roster. Think I was very fortunate having been
- 24:03Speaker 4: here two years before not too long ago, to have
- 24:07Speaker 4: a little bit of the lay of the land, a
- 24:09Speaker 4: little bit of an understanding of the personnel on the roster,
- 24:12Speaker 4: personnel staff wise in the building, uh to give me
- 24:15Speaker 4: a head start. But the biggest thing was trying to
- 24:17Speaker 4: build relationships with the players as fast as I could
- 24:21Speaker 4: and really get to uh bridge that gap with them
- 24:26Speaker 4: to understand where they were at, what they were thinking,
- 24:31Speaker 4: doing our own evaluations, to see and feel who and
- 24:34Speaker 4: how we were going to retain and hold that together.
- 24:39Speaker 13: Coach Climbate had done an unbelievable job.
- 24:41Speaker 4: Our culture has been very, very strong, So a good
- 24:47Speaker 4: situation to walk into as a first time head coach.
- 24:51Speaker 19: Center right in the back, Hey, coach add Drake KGSL Radio,
- 24:56Speaker 19: Which it's all.
- 24:57Speaker 5: I'm curious about your approach.
- 24:59Speaker 19: You mentioned you want this team to have a new
- 25:01Speaker 19: old school sort of way to go out there on
- 25:04Speaker 19: the field. You were there for the glory days the
- 25:06Speaker 19: fans back in Kansas remember the nineties and two thousands.
- 25:09Speaker 19: What does new old school mean for the on field product?
- 25:13Speaker 4: Well, I think, uh, you know from the jump, and
- 25:18Speaker 4: it's it's really the only way I know and I've
- 25:21Speaker 4: been very, very fortunate to be around coaches and mentors
- 25:25Speaker 4: that have have lived that out, and I think there's
- 25:30Speaker 4: a level of investment, there's a level of sacrifice, there's
- 25:34Speaker 4: a level of toughness, there's a level of grit that
- 25:37Speaker 4: uh sometimes can be unpopular, you know and in from
- 25:41Speaker 4: a cultural standpoint or uh sometimes people don't like it
- 25:44Speaker 4: because it's uncomfortable. And and that mantra for me is
- 25:48Speaker 4: that you know that that that's a place that we're
- 25:50Speaker 4: going to live. And if there's people that that don't
- 25:55Speaker 4: like that or make that make them uncomfortable, then there's
- 25:58Speaker 4: plenty that will embrace it and will embody that and
- 26:02Speaker 4: when they put on that power cat, they will represent
- 26:05Speaker 4: it in the way that and be willing to make
- 26:08Speaker 4: the sacrifices work at the level.
- 26:10Speaker 13: That we need to work and become everything that they
- 26:14Speaker 13: can be.
- 26:15Speaker 23: Center right, second rope, Dan Tor to wake up call
- 26:19Speaker 23: DT dot com coach for your journey to be the
- 26:23Speaker 23: quarterback at case State, now be the head coach, just
- 26:26Speaker 23: being on that special road that you've been on and
- 26:28Speaker 23: not a lot of people get to take reflecting on that,
- 26:31Speaker 23: what that's meant to you, and then where your faith
- 26:34Speaker 23: kind of works into that. Because I know you mentioned
- 26:35Speaker 23: your faith when you started off today, I appreciate you
- 26:38Speaker 23: asking that.
- 26:39Speaker 4: I think, top to bottom my faith, my relationship with
- 26:44Speaker 4: Jesus is the most important thing. These situations are completely
- 26:49Speaker 4: because of Him and everything that He has blessed me
- 26:51Speaker 4: and my family with.
- 26:53Speaker 13: It's not because of.
- 26:54Speaker 4: How hard I've worked or how smart I am, and
- 26:56Speaker 4: has nothing to do with that. He's made all the
- 26:58Speaker 4: pieces and put them in place at the right time,
- 27:02Speaker 4: the right way to make all of this a reality.
- 27:04Speaker 4: In understanding the reason and the mission that I'm called
- 27:09Speaker 4: here and that we are called here every one of
- 27:11Speaker 4: us is to serve and impact those around us, and
- 27:17Speaker 4: how that is the most important thing. And that's the
- 27:21Speaker 4: context that I'm able and very very blessed to approach
- 27:25Speaker 4: this opportunity with. I'm very blessed that that culture has
- 27:28Speaker 4: been weighed for a very very long time here that
- 27:31Speaker 4: way from Coach Snyder and Coach Climbing that it was
- 27:34Speaker 4: never about them, It was about the people.
- 27:36Speaker 13: It was about serving others.
- 27:37Speaker 4: It was about making their life and their situation better
- 27:41Speaker 4: while striving for excellence in everything we do.
- 27:43Speaker 13: Time for a couple more questions of those Sinner Randa.
- 27:46Speaker 22: Back, Big Colin Tamyverson, Manhattan Burk. I wanted to ask
- 27:52Speaker 22: about the two defense of the guys that you brought
- 27:55Speaker 22: Wesley and in Braggs. What's impressed you most about what
- 27:59Speaker 22: you what you've seen in this office.
- 28:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I think both are exemporary work ethic, character, investment
- 28:08Speaker 4: and care for our team. We've really developed our leadership
- 28:14Speaker 4: council through the winner in the spring, voted on that
- 28:17Speaker 4: after that.
- 28:18Speaker 13: To build that nucleus of guys.
- 28:20Speaker 4: We're waiting to vote on captains until two weeks into
- 28:24Speaker 4: training camp to give those guys a chance to work
- 28:27Speaker 4: and compete with.
- 28:28Speaker 13: Each other and develop with each other, learn one another.
- 28:32Speaker 4: And these two guys defensively over the last month in
- 28:36Speaker 4: the summer have done.
- 28:38Speaker 13: A great job and our.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Player representation meetings bringing issues to the table, helping serve
- 28:45Speaker 4: their teammates and solve problems, being sold out to our
- 28:48Speaker 4: team concept. And that all of those characteristics translate directly
- 28:55Speaker 4: to the field. And so that's and I could say,
- 28:59Speaker 4: I'm we could definitely have brought ten, twelve, fifteen guys
- 29:02Speaker 4: that are doing that.
- 29:03Speaker 13: I thought those two really stood out over the last
- 29:06Speaker 13: month time for a final question, far upside in the back.
- 29:10Speaker 13: How's it going?
- 29:11Speaker 8: Wesley Fair, Kansas State Football?
- 29:15Speaker 4: So I got a question for you, being a former quarterback,
- 29:18Speaker 4: do you find yourself cheering for offense or defense?
- 29:22Speaker 13: Or how do you go about that?
- 29:25Speaker 4: Well, I think I need to answer that by what's
- 29:27Speaker 4: on the line of who wins or loses? Because after
- 29:30Speaker 4: that dinner.
- 29:30Speaker 13: We had, I think, I think I remember which one
- 29:32Speaker 13: I would want.
- 29:32Speaker 14: To be on. You know, here we go.
- 29:34Speaker 24: I like the sound of that. Thank you for your
- 29:38Speaker 24: time today, coach, and get luck this season.
- 29:40Speaker 13: Thank you guys, all right?
- 29:42Speaker 8: That was Callin Klein, head coach of the Kansas State Wildcats,
- 29:45Speaker 8: going into his first year at the Helm up in Manhattan.
- 29:52Speaker 8: Going to be a really interesting season. See how they
- 29:54Speaker 8: bounce back from going six and six last year. He
- 29:58Speaker 8: does return every job like they talked about, who you know,
- 30:02Speaker 8: was seen as one of the top quarterbacks in the
- 30:05Speaker 8: nation last year. Didn't quite live up to it. Had
- 30:07Speaker 8: a decent season, but a little bit disappointing. I think
- 30:10Speaker 8: he was hampered by injuries a little bit too, if
- 30:12Speaker 8: I remember correctly. But he's very talented quarterback and Colin
- 30:17Speaker 8: Klein's that's kind of his calling card is getting the
- 30:20Speaker 8: most out of quarterbacks, and Johnson fits into that mold
- 30:24Speaker 8: of a dual threat kind of guy, so I think
- 30:27Speaker 8: that he will be able to get a lot out
- 30:29Speaker 8: of him. CBS Sports has Kansas State projected to go
- 30:33Speaker 8: seven and five and four and five in conference, so
- 30:38Speaker 8: it'll you know, I think it's one of those years
- 30:41Speaker 8: that could be really high floor or sorry, really high ceiling,
- 30:45Speaker 8: pretty low floor. That's just, you know, that's just kind
- 30:47Speaker 8: of the nature of the Big Twelve as a conference overall,
- 30:51Speaker 8: especially with the team that's in their first year under a.
- 30:54Speaker 5: New head coach.
- 30:55Speaker 8: But I think Colin Klein in the long run will
- 30:57Speaker 8: be really good for Kansas State. I think they probably
- 31:00Speaker 8: will be middle of the pack this year. They definitely
- 31:03Speaker 8: have the pieces to contend, but I don't know if
- 31:05Speaker 8: they'll be able to put it all together in year one.
- 31:10Speaker 8: A reminder, if you would like to have your thoughts
- 31:13Speaker 8: heard on the show, you can text us nine to seven,
- 31:16Speaker 8: nine six, nine, three eleven fifty. Drop your thoughts on
- 31:20Speaker 8: the text line and I will try to get to
- 31:22Speaker 8: those a little later in the show.
- 31:24Speaker 5: When we come back.
- 31:26Speaker 8: We're going to preview All Star Week in the MLB,
- 31:29Speaker 8: the MLB Draft, the All Star Futures Game, and the
- 31:33Speaker 8: Home Run Derby and All Star Game as well. So
- 31:35Speaker 8: a lot to talk about in this upcoming weekend and
- 31:40Speaker 8: we'll be back.
- 31:40Speaker 5: Right after this. You're listening to Chip Howard Sports Talk
- 31:43Speaker 5: on the Zone.

- 34:53Speaker 8: Howard Sports Talk here on the Zone eleven fifty AM,

- 35:01Speaker 8: for Chip Howard today. Coming up in the five o'clock hour,
- 35:05Speaker 8: we will have Ren Delos Santos, the president of the
- 35:09Speaker 8: Red Rowdy Student Organization, here in studio with us. We're
- 35:13Speaker 8: going to talk all about Reid Rowdies, along with getting
- 35:17Speaker 8: ready for the Aggie volleyball and Aggie basketball seasons coming
- 35:22Speaker 8: up this fall. I think all of our teams that
- 35:26Speaker 8: play in Red Arena this year are going to have
- 35:28Speaker 8: great seasons. Definitely a lot to look forward to. But
- 35:32Speaker 8: right now we're going to preview All Star Weekend.
- 35:37Speaker 5: In the MLB.
- 35:39Speaker 8: So that gets underway on Tomorrow actually, which with the
- 35:46Speaker 8: HBCU Swingman Classic, so student athletes from Division one programs
- 35:51Speaker 8: from HBCUs will be playing, presented by USA Baseball. That's
- 35:57Speaker 8: at six o'clock tomorrow night. On Saturday is the first
- 36:04Speaker 8: round of the MLB Draft, the first four rounds of
- 36:08Speaker 8: the MLB Draft on Saturday, and then Sunday will be
- 36:12Speaker 8: rounds five through twenty.
- 36:14Speaker 3: On.
- 36:17Speaker 8: Also on Sunday will be the All Star Futures Game,
- 36:20Speaker 8: so top prospects from around the league will be taking
- 36:23Speaker 8: part in that. That's at eleven am Central time on Sunday.
- 36:29Speaker 8: Monday will be the T Mobile Home Run Derby with
- 36:33Speaker 8: the new format once again because they just they can't
- 36:36Speaker 8: seem to decide on what they want to do with
- 36:38Speaker 8: that format. And then on Tuesday will be the grand Finale,
- 36:41Speaker 8: the All Star Game at seven o'clock Central time. And
- 36:45Speaker 8: the All Star festivities this year are taking place in Philadelphia,
- 36:49Speaker 8: which I think is very fitting for the two hundred
- 36:52Speaker 8: and fiftieth anniversary of America declaring independence. For the All
- 36:57Speaker 8: Star Week to be taking place in Philadelphia is really cool.
- 37:01Speaker 5: So let's get into the draft here. There are a
- 37:04Speaker 5: few aggies that are on a lot of draft boards.
- 37:08Speaker 24: So the.
- 37:11Speaker 8: Highest ranked player that has worn a Texas A and
- 37:14Speaker 8: M uniform in twenty twenty six is Chris Iccopian. He's
- 37:18Speaker 8: kind of like unsensus Top twenty. MLB dot Com has
- 37:23Speaker 8: him at number fourteen. I believe they have him as
- 37:27Speaker 8: the fifth best college hitter in this year's draft class.
- 37:32Speaker 8: It's just it's going to be interesting to see how
- 37:34Speaker 8: teams evaluate him. You know, he wasn't at full strength
- 37:38Speaker 8: hardly at all this year for us, but when he
- 37:40Speaker 8: did play, you saw flashes of the hitter that he is.
- 37:46Speaker 8: When he was in the lineup, he was always one
- 37:48Speaker 8: of our best hitters, which is really hard to do
- 37:50Speaker 8: in the lineup that we had this year with Chris
- 37:53Speaker 8: Ocopian alongside Gavin Grohovac and Cayden Cerell. Speaking of those
- 37:58Speaker 8: two guys, they are also on the Top Draft Prospects list.
- 38:02Speaker 8: Surrell at number thirty three, and Grohovac at thirty eight.
- 38:07Speaker 8: Shane Sedeo also in the top two fifty. He's at
- 38:09Speaker 8: number ninety five, left handed pitcher for US. Also coming
- 38:15Speaker 8: off kind of a down year in an Aggie uniform,
- 38:18Speaker 8: but his draft stocks still pretty high. He's definitely, definitely
- 38:22Speaker 8: has a really high ceiling, but will be interesting to
- 38:25Speaker 8: see how he develops in the minor league system of
- 38:28Speaker 8: whatever team he ends up going to. A couple Aggie
- 38:33Speaker 8: commits that will be freshman if they make it to
- 38:36Speaker 8: campus in the fall. Connor Komal, an infielder. He's number
- 38:41Speaker 8: fifty five on MLB dot COM's list, so probably not
- 38:45Speaker 8: gonna make it to campus. I imagine he'll get taken
- 38:48Speaker 8: early enough that he will just go ahead and sign
- 38:50Speaker 8: and take that money and start his minor league baseball
- 38:54Speaker 8: journey at the end of the summer. And two other
- 38:58Speaker 8: EGGI commits that are on the top two fifty. Trey Ebel,
- 39:02Speaker 8: another infielder, a son of Dino Ebel, the third base
- 39:07Speaker 8: coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He's at number one
- 39:09Speaker 8: oh seven, and then Ryan Harwood, and outfielder, is at
- 39:13Speaker 8: number two twenty six.
- 39:15Speaker 5: So Harwood I could see maybe making it to campus.
- 39:17Speaker 8: He's ranked low enough that there is a chance, but
- 39:21Speaker 8: come Out and Ebel are both probably just gonna go
- 39:23Speaker 8: ahead and sign with whatever team drafts them. The number
- 39:29Speaker 8: one pick is in the hands of the Chicago White Sox,
- 39:32Speaker 8: and there's a few different options.
- 39:33Speaker 5: That they could go with.
- 39:35Speaker 8: Grady Emerson high school shortstop out of Texas, and then
- 39:40Speaker 8: two college hitters, UCLA shortstop Rock Chilowski and Georgia Tech
- 39:44Speaker 8: catcher Vaughan Lackey. Chilowski was kind of the consensus number
- 39:49Speaker 8: one for most of this past season, but it's been
- 39:53Speaker 8: a little bit of a discussion. Some sites have Grady
- 39:56Speaker 8: Emerson at number one, some have uh Chilowski, and I
- 39:59Speaker 8: think a do have Lackey. I think it probably will
- 40:02Speaker 8: end up being Chelawski. He's kind of the most proven
- 40:04Speaker 8: out of those guys. That'd be my pick, but we'll
- 40:09Speaker 8: see what the White Sox do. The Astros and Rangers
- 40:14Speaker 8: pick back to back. The Rangers are at number sixteen,
- 40:16Speaker 8: Astros at number seventeen, and I would really love for
- 40:23Speaker 8: at least one of our Aggie's in the draft this
- 40:28Speaker 8: year to go to one of those teams. I'm personally
- 40:30Speaker 8: an Astros fan, so I would love if the Astros
- 40:32Speaker 8: went ahead and took Cayden Surrell or Chris Jacopian or
- 40:35Speaker 8: Gavin Grohovac in the first round. We will see how
- 40:38Speaker 8: that goes, though, as the Astros did pass on Jason
- 40:41Speaker 8: Lovolette last year, which doesn't look like a great move
- 40:44Speaker 8: as he has I think he said thirteen homers in
- 40:48Speaker 8: his minor league career so far this season, But we
- 40:52Speaker 8: will see where that goes. The All Star Futures Game,
- 40:55Speaker 8: there are I think there's only one Astros prospect on
- 40:58Speaker 8: the roster, Xavier Nine, who was that first round pick
- 41:01Speaker 8: last year. He's currently at Single A with the Fatteville Woodpeckers.
- 41:07Speaker 8: And then the Texas Rangers have one prospect, a pitcher
- 41:13Speaker 8: Caden Scarborough.
- 41:14Speaker 5: The Astros actually have two.
- 41:15Speaker 8: Kevin Alvarez, an outfielder also playing at Fayetteville right now,
- 41:18Speaker 8: is the other one. So that game is on Sunday,
- 41:22Speaker 8: the Home Run Derby. Five of the eight participants have
- 41:25Speaker 8: been announced. That's Jack cagleone from the Kansas City Royals,
- 41:29Speaker 8: Junior Cameron Naro from the Tampa Bay Rays, Wilson Contraras
- 41:33Speaker 8: from the Boston Red Sox, Ben Rice from the New
- 41:35Speaker 8: York Yankees and Jordan Walker from the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 41:39Speaker 5: That'll be on Monday.
- 41:40Speaker 8: Three more participants yet to be announced, and the All
- 41:44Speaker 8: Star Game will be on Monday Night. Only one Astro
- 41:52Speaker 8: on the or sorry, Tuesday Night not Monday Night. Tuesday
- 41:55Speaker 8: night at seven o'clock the All Star Game. Jordan Alvarez
- 41:59Speaker 8: is in the starting lineup designated hitter, the only Astro
- 42:02Speaker 8: to make the team and the Texas. The only Texas
- 42:05Speaker 8: ranger to make the team is left handed bullpen arm
- 42:08Speaker 8: Jacob Latz. So looking forward to that All Star Game,
- 42:14Speaker 8: and speaking of the Astros, it is now time for

- 43:29Speaker 27: The Houston Astros lost the rubber game of their series
- 43:32Speaker 27: with the Washington Nationals last night, final score eight to two.
- 43:36Speaker 27: It was a rough start for Spencer Arraghetti, who pitched
- 43:39Speaker 27: four innings, allowed eight runs on seven hits, and gave
- 43:43Speaker 27: up two home runs. One of the few bright spots
- 43:46Speaker 27: of the night was an RBI single from Bryce Matthews
- 43:49Speaker 27: in the top of the fifth inning.
- 43:51Speaker 7: First run for the Astros.
- 43:52Speaker 21: Potentially ninety feet away.
- 43:54Speaker 20: Bryce Matthews with a line drive base hit in the
- 43:57Speaker 20: center field, Astro score their throat of the night, crossing
- 44:01Speaker 20: to play Yaner Dias.
- 44:02Speaker 13: It's now a five to one game.
- 44:04Speaker 27: The Astros will have the day off today and they'll
- 44:07Speaker 27: return to action tomorrow night to start a road series
- 44:10Speaker 27: against the Texas Rangers. First pitch at seven oh five
- 44:14Speaker 27: coverage on CW thirty three and the Space City Home
- 44:17Speaker 27: Network with your Houston Astros report, I'm Adam.
- 44:20Speaker 5: C having Kanty and Michelle are unsportsman life.
- 44:23Speaker 28: As uncomfortable as it may be, as puckered as Josh
- 44:27Speaker 28: Cronky in ownership may be. Throughout the course of the
- 44:31Speaker 28: next calendar year, They're gonna have to go through this
- 44:34Speaker 28: with the assurance only of Jokic's work.
- 44:37Speaker 24: That is it.
- 44:38Speaker 28: Because you can't trade a player like Nicola Jokic when
- 44:41Speaker 28: he doesn't ask to be traded.
- 44:43Speaker 3: Just can't do it.
- 44:44Speaker 13: Unsportsman life.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Listen in weekday mornings from fine to eight in the
- 44:48Speaker 1: Zone eleven AM and ninety three point seven FM.
- 45:16Speaker 14: All right, welcome back in Riley Dorsey here, and we're
- 45:19Speaker 14: back with another weekly check in with the Bras Valley
- 45:21Speaker 14: Bombers head coach Ryan Targosh. Ryan always appreciate you taking
- 45:25Speaker 14: the time to join us, and I know it's been
- 45:27Speaker 14: another busy week for y'all, so we're just gonna jump
- 45:29Speaker 14: right in. I know y'all picked up a couple of
- 45:32Speaker 14: nice road wins this past week, and then you'll followed
- 45:34Speaker 14: that up with a big win over Strman last night.
- 45:37Speaker 14: So as you're kind of looking at where this team
- 45:39Speaker 14: is now, are you starting to see guys settle into
- 45:41Speaker 14: their more defined roles or is that something that's still
- 45:44Speaker 14: kind of evolving with each game.
- 45:48Speaker 24: I think so. I think it's a mixture of both.
- 45:51Speaker 24: Some guys are still moving around. Some guys you know,
- 45:54Speaker 24: they're they're maybe finding their permanent spot, but it's it's
- 45:58Speaker 24: still overall, it's just understanding what your role is for
- 46:02Speaker 24: that game. That's go out there executing your job.
- 46:05Speaker 19: And that's what I.
- 46:06Speaker 24: Trusted them before every game. It's, hey, you know your job,
- 46:10Speaker 24: maybe this, your job could be this later on. It's
- 46:13Speaker 24: just got there to do your job for that moment.
- 46:15Speaker 24: And if you can just continue to stack that over
- 46:19Speaker 24: a course of a game, I think we're going to
- 46:21Speaker 24: keep getting good results that we have been for sure,
- 46:24Speaker 24: and so.
- 46:25Speaker 14: Then whenever guys are trying to figure out where they
- 46:27Speaker 14: fit into all of this, as a coach, how do
- 46:30Speaker 14: you help make that happen naturally without trying.
- 46:33Speaker 27: To force it.
- 46:35Speaker 24: I think it's getting guys just to play and just
- 46:40Speaker 24: watching place see how they move, just because you know
- 46:44Speaker 24: some guys they may move a certain way and they're
- 46:47Speaker 24: fit for a spot than what they're playing. And I
- 46:51Speaker 24: think when you kind of instruct them and tell them
- 46:55Speaker 24: that and you enlighten them about it, they can kind
- 46:57Speaker 24: of see it and they may build some confidence. But
- 47:01Speaker 24: I think as long as you take the time and
- 47:03Speaker 24: work with them in a certain spot or a certain position,
- 47:06Speaker 24: and you build confidence in them and support them in that,
- 47:10Speaker 24: I think that makes a world of difference. I know
- 47:12Speaker 24: we've already had several guys play spots they haven't played before,
- 47:16Speaker 24: but they look like a natural play in that spot.
- 47:19Speaker 24: So I mean that's also what summer.
- 47:23Speaker 14: Ball is about.
- 47:24Speaker 24: You can try new things, see what happens. Maybe you
- 47:26Speaker 24: can go go back to your school and play a
- 47:30Speaker 24: different spot and help the team. That's what it's always about,
- 47:33Speaker 24: is just how how can I help the.
- 47:34Speaker 13: Team and what can I do?
- 47:37Speaker 24: For that, But as long as long as guys are happy,
- 47:41Speaker 24: they're they're encouraging and encouraging each other in those moments,
- 47:48Speaker 24: I think I think that means a lot, and that's
- 47:50Speaker 24: that's going to help them out.
- 47:52Speaker 14: Yeah. Absolutely so. Then, kind of staying on the coaching
- 47:55Speaker 14: side of everything, now that you've had a few weeks
- 47:57Speaker 14: to kind of settle into your first season as a
- 47:59Speaker 14: high head coach, has there been anything about the job
- 48:02Speaker 14: that's been maybe a little different than you expected coming
- 48:05Speaker 14: into this.
- 48:07Speaker 9: Yes, for sure.
- 48:08Speaker 24: I mean it's always you can you can set your
- 48:12Speaker 24: expectations of what the job may look like, but then
- 48:14Speaker 24: once whenever you get down into the the nitty gritty stuff,
- 48:20Speaker 24: you know, things can be a lot different. And it's
- 48:22Speaker 24: all it's all for the better, it's all.
- 48:24Speaker 26: For the good.
- 48:24Speaker 24: I've I've loved doing this. That's been been a pleasure,
- 48:29Speaker 24: I would say definitely. What has been a challenge is
- 48:33Speaker 24: managing a roster and trying to get you know, thirty
- 48:38Speaker 24: thirty guys on a team and trying to work between
- 48:42Speaker 24: guys schedules because guys leave, Guys want to go home
- 48:46Speaker 24: and see their family, or maybe they just need time off.
- 48:50Speaker 24: There's a lot of different aspects that you have to
- 48:54Speaker 24: account for. But besides that, I mean, that's why I
- 48:58Speaker 24: have two great assistant coaches that helped me out with that.
- 49:00Speaker 24: And it's definitely it's still a team aspect. It's not
- 49:04Speaker 24: just about the players. It's about the three coaches that
- 49:07Speaker 24: we have, it's about all the support, about all the
- 49:10Speaker 24: support staff that we have that just makes the game
- 49:13Speaker 24: that even happen, and of course the players that everyone
- 49:18Speaker 24: gets to watch and see. But it's definitely a team
- 49:20Speaker 24: effort all the way around.
- 49:22Speaker 14: Yeah, for sure, that that makes complete sense. So just
- 49:26Speaker 14: with like instincts wise, have you found yourself trusting those
- 49:29Speaker 14: instincts a little more as the season has progressed, Yeah.
- 49:33Speaker 24: I think so. That's that's funny that you that you
- 49:36Speaker 24: say that, because there's there's been There's definitely have been
- 49:39Speaker 24: some moments to where it's like, I know I should
- 49:43Speaker 24: make this decision, but you know, maybe someone else tell
- 49:47Speaker 24: me something else and we'll kind of see how it
- 49:49Speaker 24: plays out. And I'd say there's been a lot of
- 49:53Speaker 24: times where if I would have just trusted my gut,
- 49:55Speaker 24: I think things would have worked out for the better.
- 49:58Speaker 14: But that's.
- 50:00Speaker 23: Kind of like how life is.
- 50:01Speaker 24: It's just sometimes you live and you learn and mistakes.
- 50:05Speaker 24: Our mistakes are good because you can you can learn
- 50:07Speaker 24: from those mistakes and if you just keep nobody's perfect.
- 50:12Speaker 24: There's only one person in this world that has been perfect.
- 50:15Speaker 24: And so uh, as long as you can just continue
- 50:19Speaker 24: to learn from those mistakes and move on from them
- 50:23Speaker 24: and be better, I think that's the name of the
- 50:25Speaker 24: game for for everybody and myself included.
- 50:29Speaker 14: Yeah, I could definitely say that. So then, obviously you've
- 50:33Speaker 14: had the chance to play for a lot of different
- 50:35Speaker 14: coaches over the years and everything like that. So as
- 50:38Speaker 14: your first year being head coach, have you kind of
- 50:40Speaker 14: caught yourself saying or maybe doing something this summer that
- 50:43Speaker 14: reminded you of one of your own coaches?
- 50:47Speaker 24: Oh? Yes, for sure, I think I like to I
- 50:52Speaker 24: definitely like to lane on my old, old or past
- 50:56Speaker 24: coaches just because a lot of what I know is
- 51:02Speaker 24: being taught from them and so but I also know
- 51:06Speaker 24: that having my own identity and having my own philosophy
- 51:09Speaker 24: is just as important, just because it's true to who
- 51:14Speaker 24: I am and not trying to be somebody else. But
- 51:17Speaker 24: that who I might be is a mixture of several
- 51:22Speaker 24: past coaches that I have. So it's it's taking what
- 51:26Speaker 24: I what I have learned from them, and taking what
- 51:30Speaker 24: I know and just kind of combining those two things
- 51:33Speaker 24: and then implementing it into this team and to this program.
- 51:36Speaker 14: That we have going on. Absolutely, and just like you said,
- 51:40Speaker 14: I feel like you're just you're always learning in every
- 51:43Speaker 14: new situation. So then just as you continue to grow
- 51:47Speaker 14: as a coach this summer. Once this season is all
- 51:50Speaker 14: said and done, is there anything that you hope your
- 51:53Speaker 14: players remember most about playing for you?
- 51:55Speaker 24: I would say what I would want the players to
- 51:59Speaker 24: take away away from this year is that. And I
- 52:03Speaker 24: think that we've talked about this before, but whether you're
- 52:08Speaker 24: playing collegiate summer ball for the Brass Valley Bombers, or
- 52:12Speaker 24: you're going to play school ball at a d one
- 52:16Speaker 24: at a juco wherever that may be, or if you
- 52:19Speaker 24: get any professional opportunities, that the game doesn't change. And
- 52:25Speaker 24: that's that's the mindset that you should go into it
- 52:27Speaker 24: is that it's the bags are still ninety feet, the pitching,
- 52:32Speaker 24: the rubber is still sixty feet six inches. But besides that,
- 52:37Speaker 24: it's still the same game. It's the only thing that
- 52:41Speaker 24: may change is your preparation and your routine, and that's
- 52:44Speaker 24: just dependent on the person. But every every player knows
- 52:48Speaker 24: what works for them, what.
- 52:49Speaker 23: They need to do.
- 52:50Speaker 24: It's just always it's the challenges going out there and
- 52:54Speaker 24: executing it. And I always stretch to these guys that
- 52:59Speaker 24: you know, it's not it's not always about your outcome.
- 53:01Speaker 24: It's not about the performance, even though that is a
- 53:03Speaker 24: big part of the game. But if you can continue
- 53:06Speaker 24: to keep working the process or your preparation that you
- 53:11Speaker 24: have and you just trust that you're going to make
- 53:16Speaker 24: it a lot further then you think you will, or
- 53:19Speaker 24: of what you had in mind, just because if you
- 53:22Speaker 24: have a if you're just solely reliant on performance getting
- 53:27Speaker 24: you through your career, I mean, baseball is a game
- 53:31Speaker 24: of failure. You're you're gonna be you're gonna be down
- 53:34Speaker 24: a lot more than you're gonna be riding the highs.
- 53:38Speaker 24: And so if you can just take playing the game
- 53:42Speaker 24: the same and trusting your routine and process, which I've
- 53:47Speaker 24: stressed these guys a whole lot, I think if they
- 53:49Speaker 24: take those two things away from the summer, I think
- 53:53Speaker 24: these guys will find some success later on or even
- 53:56Speaker 24: this next year for their school ball Yeah.
- 53:59Speaker 14: And I think that's a great way to look at it.
- 54:01Speaker 14: And like you said, you've just been reiterating that mindset
- 54:04Speaker 14: over and over again, so as you get ready for tonight,
- 54:07Speaker 14: is the message to just kind of keep building on
- 54:10Speaker 14: that and stacking those good performances on each other.
- 54:13Speaker 24: Yes, one hundred percent. That's that's the name of the game.
- 54:17Speaker 19: I believe.
- 54:17Speaker 24: I think that's. Uh, that is what I believe successful
- 54:24Speaker 24: teams have is that you know, there's not a there's
- 54:27Speaker 24: not a whole lot of uh, there's not a whole
- 54:32Speaker 24: lot of different mindset. It's mainly just one or two
- 54:35Speaker 24: keep it simple, and then you go out there and
- 54:37Speaker 24: you attack that mindset, and it's just to keep the
- 54:41Speaker 24: game is getting more complex and complex as the day
- 54:45Speaker 24: goes and so but I believe this game was made
- 54:48Speaker 24: to be simple. And whenever you can keep it simple
- 54:51Speaker 24: and you have your own mindset, your routine, your preparation,
- 54:55Speaker 24: and you go out there and execute it, I think
- 54:58Speaker 24: that's whenever you can have success. That's gonna be our
- 55:00Speaker 24: game plan going out there tonight.
- 55:02Speaker 14: Yeah, for sure. Definitely just mind over matter. It sounds like, well, yeah,
- 55:07Speaker 14: I think that's all I have for you today. Thank
- 55:10Speaker 14: you again for joining us, and best of luck tonight
- 55:12Speaker 14: for y'all. We'll catch back up with you next week.
- 55:15Speaker 24: And yeah, yes, thank you so much for having me
- 55:17Speaker 24: on here.
- 55:18Speaker 13: All right.
- 55:18Speaker 8: That was the head coach of the Brestfelly Bombers and
- 55:22Speaker 8: former Aggie baseball player Ryan Targatch.
- 55:27Speaker 5: This is Chip Howard Sports Talk here on the Zone.
- 55:29Speaker 8: I'm caler Rapley filling in for Chip. Coming up at

- 55:48Speaker 8: send you to the five o'clock hour.
- 55:50Speaker 5: This is Chip Howard Sports Talk on the Zone.
