- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday.
- 0:14It's the 2nd of March and I hope that you are going awfully
- 0:18splendidly as you have tapped on place so that we can do some
- 0:22reading of God's Word. Today.
- 0:25I have finished my role of 10 years at Calvary Hospital.
- 0:30Oh what a a sad ending it was to have to say goodbye to so many
- 0:34wonderful people and such a rich space for the last decade of my
- 0:38life. But that is to make way for this
- 0:41new chapter where I get to be a part of the Saint Clements
- 0:45community and to be a part of that ministry team as a pastor.
- 0:49How exciting. But I have a long weekend in
- 0:54between the old job and the new job, which means today and
- 0:56tomorrow, well, I get to study and, and do some things that
- 1:00need doing before starting on Wednesday.
- 1:02So that's very exciting. But Speaking of very exciting,
- 1:05we are continuing in this book of Hosea, which I don't know
- 1:09about you, but I'm really enjoying.
- 1:10And did you realise that this book, particularly this back end
- 1:14of the book that we're into now, this is actually considered the
- 1:18most poetic of all of Israel's prophets.
- 1:22So we are reading gold class poetry.
- 1:26Unfortunately, today and tomorrow will be the last of the
- 1:29the poetry of judgement. And then we'll move on to the
- 1:33poetry of God's love and faithfulness for his people.
- 1:37But that is what this is all about as God speaks through
- 1:41Hosea desperately calling his people back into faithfulness to
- 1:46him. So let's read that together.
- 1:48Holy Spirit, open us up to hear your words and your truth and to
- 1:54learn more about you as we read this today.
- 1:56All right friends, let us read together.
- 2:00Hosea Chapter 9. O people of Israel, do not
- 2:15rejoice as other nations do, for you have been unfaithful to your
- 2:19God, hiring yourselves out like prostitutes, worshipping other
- 2:24gods on every threshing floor. So now your harvests will be too
- 2:29small to feed you. There will be no grapes for
- 2:32making new wine. You may no longer stay here in
- 2:36the Lord's land. Instead, you will return to
- 2:38Egypt, and in Assyria you will eat food that is ceremonially
- 2:43unclean there. You will make no offerings of
- 2:46wine to the Lord. None of your sacrifices there
- 2:49will please him. They will be unclean, like food
- 2:53touched by a person in mourning. All who present such sacrifices
- 2:57will be defiled. They may eat this food
- 3:00themselves, but they may not offer it to the Lord.
- 3:04What then will you do on festival days?
- 3:07How will you observe the Lord's festivals?
- 3:10Even if you escape destruction from Assyria, Egypt will conquer
- 3:14you and Memphis will bury you. Nettles will take over your
- 3:18treasures of silver. Thistles will invade your ruined
- 3:22homes. The time of Israel's punishment
- 3:25has come. The day of payment is here.
- 3:29Soon Israel will know this all too well because of your great
- 3:33sin and hostility. You say the prophets are crazy
- 3:38and the inspired men are fools. The prophet is a watchman over
- 3:43Israel for my God, yet traps are laid for him wherever he goes.
- 3:47He faces hostility even in the House of God.
- 3:52The things my people do are as depraved as what they did in
- 3:57Gibeah long ago. God will not forget.
- 4:01He will surely punish them for their sins.
- 4:04The Lord says, O Israel, when I first found you, it was like
- 4:09finding fresh grapes in the desert.
- 4:12When I saw your ancestors, it was like seeing the first ripe
- 4:16figs of the season. But then they deserted me for
- 4:20Baal Peor, giving themselves to that shameful idol.
- 4:24Soon they became vile, as vile as the God they worshipped.
- 4:29The God of Israel will fly away like a bird, for your children
- 4:34will not be born or grow in the womb, or even be conceived.
- 4:39Even if you do have children who grow up, I will take them from
- 4:42you. It will be a terrible day when I
- 4:45turn away and leave you alone. I have watched Israel become as
- 4:50beautiful as Tyre, but now Israel will bring out her
- 4:54children for slaughter. Oh Lord, what should I request
- 4:58for your people? I will ask for wombs that don't
- 5:02give birth and breasts that give no milk.
- 5:05The Lord says all their wickedness began at Gilgal.
- 5:09There I begin to hate them. I will drive them from my land
- 5:13because of their evil actions. I will love them no more because
- 5:18all their leaders are rebels. The people of Israel are struck
- 5:22down, their roots are dried up, and they will bear no more
- 5:26fruit. And if they give birth, I will
- 5:29slaughter their beloved children.
- 5:31My God will reject the people of Israel because they will not
- 5:36listen or obey. They will be Wanderers, homeless
- 5:40among the nations. Our Lord, our modern ears can
- 5:54hear this judgement as just so incredibly harsh.
- 5:58Yet we know that you are a God of love and mercy, but you are
- 6:04also a God of justice, and you demand that your people love you
- 6:09and you alone. But at the same time, you know
- 6:12that we are just broken and inadequate in our own right.
- 6:19And that is why you sent us Jesus, and that is why you
- 6:24executed this rescue mission so that you could make a way for us
- 6:30to be able to come back into Your presence with your Spirit
- 6:35inside of us and your Son beside us, made clean once again.
- 6:41White as snow, we stand before you and you love us, and you
- 6:47lavish on us this title of your children, your most precious
- 6:52possession, and we thank you even though we do not deserve
- 6:57it. This is what you call us, and
- 7:00this is how much you love us. So we love you and we thank you
- 7:06and we're so grateful for who you are in your mercy and all
- 7:09that you have done for us. And we pray this all in the
- 7:13wonderful name of Jesus, Amen.
