- 0:00Hey everyone, and welcome back to the Travel Mug Podcast.
- 0:03We are here for Travel Tip Tuesday, and like thanks for joining us.
- 0:07How are you this fine Tuesday?
- 0:09Oh, this wintery Tuesday.
- 0:12Dreaming of a trip South, Meggan.
- 0:15Yes.
- 0:15That we never booked.
- 0:16No, no, we, Nope.
- 0:17Same.
- 0:18Same.
- 0:18We're not going south, but some people are.
- 0:20Yeah.
- 0:21Yeah, and good for them.
- 0:21Yeah.
- 0:22Happy for them.
- 0:22Yeah.
- 0:23Speaking of that, we do have some news to share for travelers going to Mexico, and if this doesn't affect you directly, it likely will affect someone you know, so just stay tuned.
- 0:35So, as of January 16th, 2026, the Mexican government has deemed it illegal to bring in vaping devices into their country.
- 0:45It is literally considered a federal violation.
- 0:50This rule isn't just for travel.
- 0:52This is actually a rule for the entire country itself, including importation, sale and distribution of vaping products.
- 0:59Now, you might be asking, well, what does vaping products, like, what does that include?
- 1:04So essentially it is vaping devices and e-liquids, including nicotine-free and CBD.
- 1:10So everything to do with vaping, really, can't get much clearer than that, Hmm.
- 1:15I don't think.
- 1:16Another important point to mention is that there are zero exceptions to this, including no medical exceptions.
- 1:23Hmm.
- 1:23You can't bring one.
- 1:24We don't care what your reason is.
- 1:27So at the airports, they are using X-ray technology to detect these devices, and if you are caught, you could risk confiscation of the device, of course, and a fine estimated between $200 and $500 USD.
- 1:41I have no idea why I was given an estimated amount.
- 1:44That seems sketchy to me, Yep.
- 1:46whatever.
- 1:47And in the worst-case scenario, it could lead to detention or a prison sentence.
- 1:53Don't wanna mess with that.
- 1:54No.
- 1:55No.
- 1:55If you are arriving in Mexico on a cruise ship, leave your vape on the ship.
- 2:00This law is for all of Mexico, and this includes cruise ship ports.
- 2:05So these devices are illegal in Mexico, now.
- 2:07Leave it home, and if you choose to risk it, you do so understanding now the potential consequences.
- 2:14Please share with your friends and family in case they're going, and it could affect them.
- 2:18So, Jenn, what are your thoughts on this ban?
- 2:21As we know, a few years ago, Mexico banned public smoking, so I can't say that I'm shocked.
- 2:26What about you?
- 2:26Yeah, I mean, I, I'm also not shocked.
- 2:29This is why it's so important to do your research before you travel anywhere.
- 2:34So, uh, I, this, this news story that popped up recently about, about Mexico banning e-cigarettes and vaping prompted me to be like, okay, where else, you know?
- 2:44And vapes are also banned in many other countries.
- 2:46India, Brazil, Thailand, many others, actually.
- 2:50So make sure you check before you pack.
- 2:54I would recommend, for like the most up-to-date information that you check travel advisories with your local government website.
- 3:00So, for instance, I checked, uh, travel.gc.ca here in Canada.
- 3:05And it has information about smoking, and if you can bring e-cigarettes and vapes with you into the country.
- 3:12I also found an article that I can link in the show notes, but it is from 2024, so it might not have the most up-to-date-information, but it might give you an idea of, uh, the many countries that are starting to ban this.
- 3:25So it is something that if you, uh, vape, you need to keep in mind before you pack.
- 3:31Yeah, definitely.
- 3:32And I think this just really goes back to the point that we hammer home all the time about doing your research.
- 3:36It's very important.
- 3:38And that is it for this week's travel tip Tuesday.
- 3:40Don't say we didn't warn you! Don't be like Meggan and Jenn, why didn't you tell us about this?
- 3:44Well, here we are.
- 3:46Um, and as always, please, when you are traveling, respect the laws of the country you are visiting.
- 3:52And vaping, it's simply not worth going to jail for.
- 3:55No.
