- 0:00Hello there, My name is Tyler Griffin and this is Scripture
- 0:04Study Insights by Scripture Central Today 3517 through 19.
- 0:11Before we dive into these verses today, I wanted to begin with a
- 0:18a question. Has there been a time recently
- 0:22when you've looked at all aspects of your life and felt
- 0:27just a little bit overwhelmed? Perhaps feeling like you have so
- 0:33many things that need to be done, but you're not able to do
- 0:37any of them really well because you feel spread so thin.
- 0:42You feel like you don't have enough time, enough energy,
- 0:45enough money, enough resources, enough help or support, whatever
- 0:50it may be, to the point where it feels like you've got very
- 0:55little gas left in the tank spiritually, physically,
- 1:00emotionally, mentally, whatever, whatever combination of those
- 1:04might be involved. And if that's the case, as we go
- 1:08through these, these ebbs and flows of life, this set of
- 1:15chapters is loaded with principles to help us not only
- 1:21just go through life, but actually grow and expand and
- 1:28become who we were intended to become as we pass through some
- 1:33of these these struggles that we face.
- 1:37And let's just talk very quickly about arithmetic.
- 1:43When we involve the Lord, the the world would have us believe
- 1:49that we have this finite resource, this this bucket with
- 1:55limited resources of time, energy, money, talent, love,
- 2:00devotion, desires, all of those things.
- 2:04But when we involve the Lord, we find out that there is not
- 2:13division and subtraction going on.
- 2:18When we're on the Lord's errands, we're not taking from
- 2:24from our bucket and emptying our bucket as we make offerings on
- 2:29the altar of the Lord. In fact, it's quite the
- 2:34opposite. When we, when we're making
- 2:37offerings to the Lord, when we're serving Him, when we're on
- 2:41His errand, when we're seeking heaven's will and doing the best
- 2:46we can to accomplish it, we're not dividing and subtracting.
- 2:53We're actually allowing Him to multiply and add.
- 3:05That's the Lord's model. And this is what happens when we
- 3:10try to do it alone. But when we're with Christ,
- 3:17somehow the the barrel of meal and the Cruz of oil, that story
- 3:23from the Old Testament, it doesn't run out.
- 3:27It's somehow keeps generating. When we feel like there's
- 3:31nothing left for us to give, when we're on His mission, on
- 3:36His errand, with our faith rooted in Him and our focus on
- 3:41Him, somehow there's more there then we even started with in
- 3:48many instances. Personally speaking, I can't
- 3:51tell you how many times that I have experienced this.
- 3:55Just as recently as yesterday, going in to teach my classes BYU
- 4:02and feeling just a little bit low energy.
- 4:07I I was feeling some allergies. I wasn't feeling great, head was
- 4:13stuffy, hadn't slept well, and I was just feeling down.
- 4:20And at that point, if I'm looking at myself and, and
- 4:24looking at the these students, 400 students who who came to
- 4:30class expecting to be fed by the Spirit and to have their faith
- 4:35fortified and their testimony strengthened.
- 4:38And I didn't have it. I didn't have the energy.
- 4:40I didn't have the drive, I didn't have the ideas, the
- 4:44freshness that that is needed to to really engage them the way
- 4:49they need to be engaged. And it's at those moments when
- 4:53you pour your heart heavenward and say, I can't do this.
- 4:57Heavenly Father, please help. Please strengthen me to to have
- 5:03what I need to be able to be an instrument in thy hands for
- 5:06whatever these students need. And then to go through that
- 5:10experience of teaching and to feel that prayer being answered
- 5:16and to, to be in the middle of teaching and have God teaching
- 5:22me things that I'm able to share with the class that it, it's a
- 5:28remarkable thing when you when you put your focus on Christ and
- 5:34let him do his work and recognize we're instruments.
- 5:39We're not the source of, of the power in, in a teaching setting
- 5:46or in a calling or in a family or in any other setting that you
- 5:51put yourself. So as we dive in today, let's
- 5:56pay attention to all of these examples of how when we focus on
- 6:02the Savior, when we when we put our our thoughts, our desires,
- 6:09our time, our money, our energy, our effort, all of that with a
- 6:15focus on him, he finds ways to multiply those things and to add
- 6:21to them. We're not giving them away and
- 6:25then walking away poorer. We're actually giving him those
- 6:31desires or that offering of, of time or money or talent OR love,
- 6:39and he refines it, he sanctifies it, he blesses that offering and
- 6:45then he finds miraculous heavenly ways to return it to us
- 6:51and to those around us. And thus we build up the Kingdom
- 6:56of God. We, we seek to bring forth and
- 6:58establish the cause of Zion. And he's the one who does this
- 7:03work through us. But we have to be willing to
- 7:07make those offerings on the altar because he doesn't reach
- 7:10into our heart and squeeze it and say, no, You will give me
- 7:14your love and your time and your talent and your devotion.
- 7:17He doesn't do that. That's our part.
- 7:20We have to be willing to make those sacrifices and then watch
- 7:24heaven do its work. So we go to with that
- 7:30foundation, we jump into chapter 17.
- 7:34And just as a quick reminder, this is all taking place on that
- 7:37first day visit among the Nephites.
- 7:41He came in 3rd Nephi 11. He taught them the sermon at the
- 7:44temple in chapters 12/13 and 14. He then taught them this
- 7:50incredible sermon about the House of Israel and the
- 7:53gathering of Israel following their scattering and the need
- 7:57for us to come into this Abrahamic covenant.
- 8:01And it's all being taught by Jesus Christ because he was
- 8:07commanded of the Father to teach it.
- 8:11So right out of the the gate here, we see that Jesus Christ
- 8:18is a commandment keeper. He's not just a commandment
- 8:22giver. He doesn't tell us keep my
- 8:26commandments. Good luck with that.
- 8:29I I don't know what it's like to do that.
- 8:31Jesus is once again inviting us to follow Him and become more
- 8:35like Him. Every single time you keep any
- 8:40commandment to any degree, you are becoming more like Jesus
- 8:44Christ who was the perfect commandment keeper and he's now
- 8:51resurrected, glorified, perfected, deified.
- 8:54He, he is fully arrived as a God.
- 8:59He is as as we said before in 35 chapter 12 verse 48, be there
- 9:04for perfect even as I or your Father, which is in heaven is
- 9:07perfect. So he's arrived.
- 9:08He's complete lacking nothing, but he's still keeping Heavenly
- 9:15Father's commandments. So this is not keeping
- 9:19commandments is not something for for developing people.
- 9:24It's something that Jesus Christ did in his ministry and it's
- 9:28something that he did in the premortal realm.
- 9:31And it's something he is still doing to this day.
- 9:35And I want to be more like Jesus Christ.
- 9:38And one of the ways that I can do that is to simply keep his
- 9:43commandments. And by the way, there's a
- 9:46difference between keeping the commandments begrudgingly with
- 9:52a, a murmuring and complaining heart versus letting go of some
- 9:58of those, those questions that we have and those struggles,
- 10:02maybe not totally ignoring them, but finding more joy in our
- 10:08efforts to keep those commandments, Putting more faith
- 10:12in him that Jesus Christ knows what he's doing when he gives us
- 10:16certain commandments. And even though it may not make
- 10:19perfect sense to me right here, right now, to try a little
- 10:25harder to keep those commandments with a little more
- 10:29trust in him and a little more joy to say, I, I don't
- 10:33understand all the reasons, but I trust Jesus.
- 10:37And I'm going to do this because he's asked me to do it.
- 10:42And I'm going to trust that he's going to multiply and magnify
- 10:46and refine my desires and my understanding and my faith in
- 10:52the process of working through this effort to keep these
- 10:56commandments with with a greater sense of, of joy and seeing it
- 11:02as a an opportunity to more deeply connect with him and
- 11:07strengthen that covenant relationship with him as he has
- 11:11modeled this. So the Savior is part way
- 11:14through this big discourse about the covenant of Abraham, about
- 11:21the House of Israel. And he says in verse 1 of
- 11:25chapter 17, behold, now it came to pass when Jesus had spoken
- 11:28these words. So the thing that he has said
- 11:31right before chapter 17 is he quoted that little segment from
- 11:36Isaiah 52. So it's been a long day up to
- 11:40this point for these people. They've experienced a lot and
- 11:43they've heard a lot, they've felt a lot, they've processed
- 11:48many things. And then he says, verse two, I
- 11:53perceive that ye are weak, that you cannot understand all my
- 11:57words, which I'm commanded of the Father to speak unto you at
- 12:00this time. I'm commanded of the Father to
- 12:04give these words to you and I'm going to give them to you, but I
- 12:07perceive you're weak. You're not getting it.
- 12:10So here we see a Christ like pattern.
- 12:12What do you do when there's a commandment and you don't feel
- 12:16like you can, you can complete it.
- 12:20Jesus doesn't say, you know, I, I only made it part way through
- 12:24what I've been commanded to the father to give you.
- 12:26But I can tell that you're weak. You're you're tired.
- 12:30Perhaps maybe there's some cognitive overload going on.
- 12:35Maybe you, you can't understand all the words because you're
- 12:39just physically exhausted today. He doesn't say.
- 12:45Therefore I'm I'm going to rationalize why I'm not going to
- 12:49keep the commandment because Jesus Christ is fully obedient.
- 12:55He is going to keep the commandment, but timing matters.
- 13:01And so he says to these people, Therefore go into your homes and
- 13:04ponder upon the things which I have said and ask of the Father
- 13:08in my name, that you may understand and prepare your
- 13:13minds for the Morrow. And I come unto you again.
- 13:16I love this. This is one of my favorite
- 13:18places in all scripture for for teacher development kinds of
- 13:24principles. Jesus Christ is not teaching a
- 13:29lesson. He's not focused on the
- 13:33curriculum here. He's focused on his students.
- 13:38He's focused on his his disciples that are sitting in
- 13:43front of him, these people who who want desperately to to grow
- 13:49and develop in the gospel and they're just not getting it.
- 13:52And So what does he do? He encourages and he invites
- 13:56them and he seeks to connect them with God the Father.
- 14:02So he tells them to go to their homes, 'cause this is best done
- 14:06in a family setting, and to pray to the Father, to ask the Father
- 14:12in my name, that you may understand what a beautiful
- 14:16thing. And here he is, Jesus Christ
- 14:18perfected, glorified God. And he is still inviting and
- 14:22encouraging these people to connect with God the Father
- 14:26through prayer, to ask Him for understanding and strength, and
- 14:31to prepare their minds for the Morrow.
- 14:34Because I will come unto you again.
- 14:37I'll finish this command that has been given to me, my Father.
- 14:42But I'm not going to do it so that I can check a box to say I
- 14:46did it. I'm going to do it in a manner
- 14:49that will be more effective. I'm going to help this message
- 14:54sink deep into the heart and into the mind, not just have it
- 14:59waft over the crowd so they hear my voice.
- 15:02But it has very little effect because for whatever reason,
- 15:05they're weak at this point. And then he tells them in verse
- 15:094. But now I go unto the Father,
- 15:11and also to show myself unto the lost tribes of Israel, for they
- 15:14are not lost unto the Father, for he knoweth whither he hath
- 15:17taken them. So he's telling them I've got
- 15:20other, other things I can do while you're working on, on
- 15:25preparing your minds for the Morrow.
- 15:27At which point Jesus cast his eyes round about again on the
- 15:32multitude, and behold, they were in tears.
- 15:37And it looks steadfastly upon him, as if they would ask him to
- 15:39tarry a little longer with them. There's an interesting,
- 15:49interesting phenomenon taking place here.
- 15:55You have, you have a certain amount of capacity in your mind
- 16:02to, to process, to make sense of, to reason and logic and, and
- 16:08understand what you're experiencing, what you might be
- 16:12hearing or seeing or, or feeling.
- 16:16And there comes a time when when you feel weak, when it's
- 16:20cognitive overload, you've had enough.
- 16:24And when the savior looks at the crowd and says, I perceive that
- 16:29you're weak. Which is the most important
- 16:31thing for a teacher or a parent or a leader or a true friend to
- 16:36do is to perceive the the needs and how people are doing before
- 16:45deciding what to do with them or for them.
- 16:48So at this point, their mind seems to be pretty full.
- 16:56And so those tears that they're now shedding probably aren't
- 17:00tears to say, oh, we're sorry. We we felt a little weak there
- 17:06for a minute. We're fully awake.
- 17:08We're ready to go. Keep preaching.
- 17:11We want more sermons about the gathering of Israel and and the
- 17:17Abrahamic covenant. I don't know that that's what
- 17:20those tears were communicating. I could be wrong, but I think
- 17:26what they were wanting this seems to be pretty full at this
- 17:32point their their mind. I think what they're wanting is
- 17:37to now just be able to spend more time with the Savior in a
- 17:45way that fills their hearts more, that they want more quiet
- 17:53connecting time with him. They just want to be with him.
- 17:57And the thought of him leaving at this point causes this, this
- 18:02group to cry. And I love this.
- 18:05He says, behold, my bowels are filled with compassion towards
- 18:11you. You'll notice once again that
- 18:15we, like these people, come to these times where we're just not
- 18:18capable of of doing what maybe we want to do.
- 18:23Maybe they would prefer to just be totally strong and fully
- 18:27awake and completely paying attention and understanding all
- 18:31the words that the Father had commanded him to give to them at
- 18:34that time. But they're not.
- 18:37So instead of subtracting or taking away from that
- 18:40experience, what the Savior does is He adds to it.
- 18:44He multiplies their experience, but he does it in a in a
- 18:49different way than continuing to preach the the sermon that he
- 18:56was commanded to give. We'll get that on the on day 2
- 19:01when he comes back to them later on in chapter 20 and 21 and 22
- 19:07and and onward from there. But for now, he's focusing on
- 19:14those more, those less cognitive and more affective or or feeling
- 19:20level connections with the people.
- 19:23Look over 7. Have ye any that are sick among
- 19:26you? Bring them, hit her.
- 19:29Have you any that are lame or blind or halt or maimed or
- 19:35leprous or that are withered or that are deaf or that are
- 19:38afflicted in any manner? Bring them, hit her, and I will
- 19:41heal them, for I have compassion upon you.
- 19:45My bowels are filled with mercy. I love this, this next line in
- 19:50verse 8 says, For I perceive, I perceive that you desire that I
- 19:55should show unto you what I have done unto your brethren at
- 19:58Jerusalem. Because if you look back in the
- 20:01Book of Mormon, these people have been told by the prophets
- 20:05that Jesus Christ, when he comes in, in his mortal ministry.
- 20:10Would heal the sick, cause the lame to walk, the blind to see,
- 20:14the deaf to hear. He'll raise up the dead.
- 20:19They. They've been told that that's
- 20:21what he would do. And now here he is in the
- 20:24resurrected form. And the people didn't ever say
- 20:28it, but he perceived that deep in their heart they wanted, they
- 20:35desired that he would show unto them what he had done with his
- 20:38brethren at Jerusalem. And they have a whole bunch of
- 20:41people who are sick or afflicted in a, in a wide variety of ways,
- 20:47and they want that level of connection with him.
- 20:51So you're seeing that the Lord is taking their desire and he's
- 20:57multiplying it. He's adding to it, He's refining
- 21:01it, and He's responding to their use of agency.
- 21:05They have this desire, even though they're not verbalizing
- 21:08it at this point. He perceived it and he's
- 21:10responding with that beautiful invitation to bring their sick
- 21:15and afflicted, and I will heal them.
- 21:19And I love how he does the healing.
- 21:21It says verse 9. It came to pass that when He had
- 21:24thus spoken, all the multitude with one accord did go forth
- 21:27with their sick and their afflicted, and their lame, with
- 21:30their blind, with their dumb, and with all them that were
- 21:33afflicted in any manner. And He did heal them everyone as
- 21:39they were brought forth unto Him.
- 21:42Everyone as they were brought forth.
- 21:46He didn't do a mass group general healing He could have,
- 21:53but He didn't. He healed them one by one, and
- 21:57it says He healed them everyone. He didn't say OK, I can help
- 22:04those who are blind, deaf, lame, leprous or halt, but I can't
- 22:09help those with emotional or mental struggles.
- 22:12I can't help those who are fill in the blank with whatever
- 22:17affliction you want. It says he healed them.
- 22:21Everyone. Jesus Christ is the master
- 22:27healer and He has the power to heal all afflictions.
- 22:34So now some of you are probably thinking to yourself, OK, that
- 22:38looks really good in the scriptures, looks really good on
- 22:42paper, but what about in practice?
- 22:45Some of you right now are watching this in in intense
- 22:51pain. You, you, many of you have
- 22:55diseases and afflictions and sicknesses, physically,
- 23:01mentally, emotionally, and you're thinking to yourself, So
- 23:04what about me? Why am I lacking in faith?
- 23:09Or did I do something wrong? Or does the Lord not love me?
- 23:15I love the fact that Jesus Christ is the master healer.
- 23:22He perceives the needs and the desires of people of His
- 23:30disciples, and when they put those desires on the altar with
- 23:35faith in Him and they trust in Him, then He now is able to
- 23:42multiply those desires and multiply those miracles
- 23:46according to His will, according to His timing, not ours.
- 23:53So we make those requests, we give those blessings, we fast
- 23:58for our loved ones and at times for our self with these
- 24:02ailments. And then we trust.
- 24:06We trust that God knows what he's doing.
- 24:10We trust that he will do his work according to His will and
- 24:14according to his timing. And if a healing blessing
- 24:18doesn't come to to me or to a loved one, that's not an
- 24:23invitation to then turn away from him and say, we'll see if I
- 24:27trust you again. It becomes an opportunity for us
- 24:31to deepen our faith even more in him to say, I trust the the the
- 24:41most intelligent being in all the universe.
- 24:45I've made my request. I've I've tried to refine my
- 24:50faith and my desires and if a healing gift isn't given or if
- 24:56somebody isn't saved a loved one from from death or from a
- 25:01disease or from serious pain or anguish of any kind, I trust in
- 25:06thee and I will trust in thee forever because my faith isn't
- 25:12rooted in miracles as we see in verse 9 being performed.
- 25:18My faith is rooted in Jesus Christ and whatever he chooses
- 25:24to do with me, that's what I want done.
- 25:29And then the prayers can shift to help me refine my faith and
- 25:39my trust in the even and especially when I don't get what
- 25:46I've been praying for. Help me to know what to pray for
- 25:50next. Help me to know how to move
- 25:53forward to become more like thee through this, this affliction
- 26:01that has not been taken away or this blessing that hasn't been
- 26:04granted the way that I've requested it.
- 26:08Many of you will remember President Jeffrey R Holland's
- 26:12talk in April of 2024 when he spoke of the prayers that were
- 26:19sent heavenward in his behalf and in behalf of his wife.
- 26:25And he was miraculously preserved and and given more
- 26:31time and his wife was not. And He reassured us that all of
- 26:38those prayers were heard and answered according to what is
- 26:44best for them eternally, not according to what they had
- 26:49actually requested. And that is an amazing
- 26:54opportunity that God gives us as disciples of Christ is to
- 26:59exercise faith in the Savior even when we don't get what
- 27:05we've asked for. It's easy to have faith in Him
- 27:08and to love Him. When all the prayers are
- 27:11answered and all the requests and the desires are met, it's a
- 27:14different matter. Entirety soul stretching
- 27:19opportunity for us to trust him when it isn't given.
- 27:25Now as soon as this happens, he he says, verse 11, it came to
- 27:31pass that he commanded that their little children should be
- 27:34brought. So they brought their little
- 27:37children, and they set them down upon the ground round about him,
- 27:41and Jesus stood in the midst, and the multitude gave way till
- 27:44they had all been brought unto him.
- 27:48So you can picture Jesus Christ in the middle with all the
- 27:51little children round about him, and then the adults in the outer
- 27:57ring of that group in verse 14. It came to pass it.
- 28:01When they had kneeled upon the ground, Jesus groaned within
- 28:05himself and said, Father, I'm troubled because of the
- 28:08wickedness of the people of the House of Israel.
- 28:12It's an interesting thing to say in that particular setting when
- 28:15you're surrounded by these little children.
- 28:18He's groaning and he's he's speaking to Heavenly Father.
- 28:24Jesus Christ seems to be constantly connected with the
- 28:29Father. You and I, not so much.
- 28:34In most cases, we seem to turn heavenward in moments of need.
- 28:41And if you follow Jesus Christ, even as a resurrected being, He
- 28:46is constantly turning to the Father and speaking with the
- 28:53Father, talking to Him, praying to him.
- 28:56What a beautiful example for us as we strive to become more like
- 28:59the Savior. So then it tells us that He he
- 29:04offered this prayer. And verse 17 says, no tongue can
- 29:08speak, neither can there be written by any man, neither can
- 29:10the hearts of men conceive so great and marvelous things as we
- 29:14both saw and heard Jesus speak. And no one can conceive of the
- 29:18joy which filled our souls at the time we heard Him.
- 29:21Pray for us unto the Father. What a beautiful pattern that
- 29:29the parents and teachers and leaders can follow to pray to
- 29:34the Father and let your children, let your students, let
- 29:37the people you're you're working with hear you talking to God the
- 29:42Father about them. It, it opens hearts it.
- 29:48You don't have to preach big sermons at that point because
- 29:53the Holy Ghost will touch hearts deeper and, and soften them and
- 29:59open them and build that that powerful relationship that is
- 30:04needed in order for trust to be built so that when you do teach
- 30:10them doctrines, they're more likely to have fertile soil for
- 30:14those seeds of faith to be planted in.
- 30:16So verse 19 says it came to pass that Jesus spake unto them and
- 30:20bade them arise. So he's offered this prayer.
- 30:23They're filled with joy and they arose from the earth.
- 30:26And he said unto them, blessed are you because of your faith.
- 30:29And now behold, my joy is full. Did you catch this back in verse
- 30:3517? They were filled with joy, which
- 30:40now he says, behold, my joy is now full.
- 30:46He is taking their desires, their use of agency, and it's
- 30:52now reciprocating. It's it's coming to him.
- 30:57He's feeling it, he's magnifying, multiplying, adding
- 31:02to it. And now he's giving back to
- 31:06them. And it's this, this ever growing
- 31:12experience of, of deepening and multiplying joy and, and deep
- 31:19true love that that we're seeing on the page here.
- 31:23And when He had said these words, he wept, and the
- 31:27multitude bear record of it. And he took their little
- 31:30children 1 by 1, and he blessed them, and he prayed unto the
- 31:35Father for them. He's constantly praying to the
- 31:40Father. As you read these chapters,
- 31:43notice how many times he either talks to or it says He prayed
- 31:46unto the Father. It's constant.
- 31:49And now He's doing it with these little children.
- 31:54We live in a world today that does not value little children.
- 32:00We live in a world that is increasingly valuing everything
- 32:05else more than children, whether it be money or jobs, promotions,
- 32:11vacations, toys, possessions, houses, homes, animals, pets,
- 32:19vehicles, anything more than little children.
- 32:25Little children are seen as expensive, annoying, dirty,
- 32:30limiting. They're going to hold you back
- 32:33and prevent you from fulfilling what you want to do in life.
- 32:37That's the way our culture, generally speaking, portrays
- 32:43children and family. When you when you see movies,
- 32:47when you see what's what's in social media and what is
- 32:51portrayed as as true freedom because you only have so much
- 32:57time and energy and money to give and children are going to
- 33:01drain you. If you ask yourself the
- 33:04question, how does Jesus Christ feel about little children?
- 33:10What are his feelings for them? And then read these verses
- 33:1621/22/23. I think you'll get a pretty good
- 33:21idea that when he says he wept, the multitude bear record of it.
- 33:27And he took their little children 1 by 1 and blessed them
- 33:31and prayed unto the Father for them.
- 33:33And when he had done this, he wept again.
- 33:37There aren't very many places in Scripture where we see that
- 33:42deeply into the soul of Jesus Christ, into his heart.
- 33:49We see it over in in the book of John in New Testament where in
- 33:55John Chapter 11 when Lazarus has died and Mary is at the feet of
- 34:01Jesus weeping and the Jews who are mourning Lazarus death
- 34:05around him are also weeping. Then Chapter 11 verse 35 gives
- 34:11you the shortest verse of all of our scripture Canon.
- 34:14It's only 2 words. Jesus wept.
- 34:18It's the shortest verse in words and one of the longest words in
- 34:24depth of meaning and and depth of, of revealing the character
- 34:29of Christ. What kind of a person is he?
- 34:33Jesus wept with these people weeping around him.
- 34:38Now, in this case, those people, the Nephites and the Lamanites
- 34:42that are that are there at at the temple in Bountiful on this
- 34:46particular day, they're not mourning a death.
- 34:50They're not, He's not mourning with those that mourn as he
- 34:54maybe was with Mary and and the Jews and Martha with the Lazarus
- 34:59situation over in John 11 here. The thing that caused those
- 35:05tears to come was his interaction with their little
- 35:10children. How the Lord loves little
- 35:13children. Can I just remind all of us that
- 35:18the Lord told us in the Doctrine and Covenants, ye are little
- 35:23children and you have not as yet understood what great things the
- 35:27Lord hath in store for you. We are all little children to
- 35:31Him and yet He loves us. His work and His glory is to to
- 35:39bring to pass our immortality and our eternal life.
- 35:42That's what He does. Think heaven, that Jesus Christ
- 35:48didn't say, no, I want to fulfill my desires.
- 35:54I want my goals to be first and foremost.
- 36:00I want what's in it for me and and for my pleasure and joy.
- 36:08Think heaven, that he didn't live his life that way, but
- 36:12rather turned outward saying, Father, what would thou have me
- 36:17do? How can I help them?
- 36:19How can I build them? So at a very practical level,
- 36:25some may wonder, OK, so does that mean we should, that the
- 36:30couples should just have as many children as they possibly can?
- 36:35That's not what I get out of these scriptures.
- 36:38What I get out of this story is for a husband and wife to come
- 36:44together and to join me ask God what he would have them do with
- 36:53regards to children. Rather than saying, Nope, I'm we
- 36:58are going to make all these decisions and once God gives
- 37:03direction, then do everything that that couple can do to
- 37:08fulfill that inspiration that is given.
- 37:11And it's nobody else's business what that couple does with
- 37:16regards to children. It's between them and the Lord.
- 37:22The problem is, is when couples don't involve the Lord when they
- 37:27turn horizontally to make decisions regarding family, then
- 37:34it feels like we're back in the division and subtraction.
- 37:39What we we can't have a child because we don't have enough
- 37:44money, or we don't have enough space in our home or our car, or
- 37:49we don't have enough energy because it's going to subtract
- 37:54from what we have and we're going to run out.
- 37:56We, we just don't have enough. If you're on the Lord's errand,
- 38:03if you know what heaven wants you to do and you do it, you
- 38:08will never run out because those children bring with them as they
- 38:13come from, from the windows of heaven, so to speak.
- 38:17They open up and they bring with them additional love, additional
- 38:24gifts, additional opportunities into your home and into your
- 38:29family that you didn't have before.
- 38:31They don't. Children don't take away from
- 38:35you, they add upon you. They the Lord multiplies what
- 38:43he's doing with you through those children that heaven is
- 38:46sending to you under heaven's inspiration and heaven's
- 38:50direction. Now this is a very difficult
- 38:55topic for some people who have never had the opportunity to get
- 39:00married, or for those who are married and love nothing more
- 39:07than to welcome children into their home and into their arms.
- 39:12And for whatever reason it didn't happen, or it's not
- 39:16happening or it can't happen. Once again, I don't know all the
- 39:22reasons why some are healed and some are not.
- 39:25I don't know why some are are given many children and others
- 39:30are giving given none. I don't have any of those
- 39:33answers, but I know that the Lord does and I know that He has
- 39:39his reasons. And I also know that the day
- 39:42will come in the eternities when we will look back and with deep
- 39:48eternal gratitude in our hearts, we will thank Him for doing what
- 39:53was best for us. But we are involving Him in
- 39:58every phase of these, these decisions and the processes of
- 40:05of. Life moving forward that our
- 40:10focus is on God, not on our self, not on the the quote UN
- 40:16quote experts of the world and the opinions of the world
- 40:19telling us how to live our life or or what to do regarding
- 40:23family. But we're putting our trust
- 40:26completely in the Lord and then moving forward in faith.
- 40:30And as we do that, regardless of the number of children that he
- 40:34sends to us or the opportunities for marriage that he affords us,
- 40:41we know that as we think celestial as President Nelson
- 40:44has invited, that all blessings are going to be granted to us
- 40:51eventually. And for some, it's going to be a
- 40:55longer period of, of testing our faith in in waiting upon the
- 41:04Lord. And for others, where children
- 41:08are granted, he's going to stretch our faith in figuring
- 41:11out how to raise them in love and righteousness, following the
- 41:16principles as outlined in the proclamation to the world on the
- 41:20family. But the main point here for me
- 41:25is to look at this story and see how Jesus Christ feels about
- 41:32children. And I want to be more like
- 41:35Jesus. I, I want to follow him, which
- 41:40means I don't see children as a problem.
- 41:45I see children as a solution. Look at verse 24.
- 41:49As the people looked to behold, they cast their eyes towards
- 41:52heaven and they saw the heavens open and they saw angels
- 41:55descending out of heaven as it were in the midst of fire.
- 41:59And they came down and encircled those little ones about, and
- 42:03they were encircled about with fire, and the angels did
- 42:07minister unto them. Heavenly angels came down and
- 42:13encircled those little ones about and ministered unto them.
- 42:19I want to be more like those angels.
- 42:21I want to be more like the Savior Jesus Christ in my
- 42:25interactions with people, especially those who are sick
- 42:30and afflicted, who are struggling, who are hurting in
- 42:33any manner, and those who are young.
- 42:36You'll notice these are the most vulnerable parts of that
- 42:39population. And that was the whole emphasis
- 42:42of chapter 17 is on strengthening and ministering to
- 42:47the needs of those people, which now brings us to chapter 18.
- 42:53And he commanded in verse one that the disciples should bring
- 42:59forth some bread and wine unto him.
- 43:02So they go and they bring this bread and wine and offer it to
- 43:06him. And you would say to yourself,
- 43:08well, those disciples just lost those resources in their home.
- 43:15They had to sacrifice. They had to give bread and wine
- 43:18to Jesus. It's now gone, depleted their,
- 43:22their home has less. I told you at the beginning that
- 43:27I love this section because it's all about multiplication and in
- 43:31addition, in the way the Lord does math with us.
- 43:37So you'll notice that Jesus didn't take their bread and wine
- 43:42and then keep it for himself. What did he do?
- 43:46Here's the pattern. Anything, and I mean anything
- 43:51that you and I put onto the altar of the Lord and offer to
- 43:55Him, consecrate to Him, He is going to follow the same
- 43:59pattern. Verse 3 tells us what he did
- 44:01when the disciples had come with bread and wine.
- 44:04He took of the bread and wine and he blessed it, and he gave
- 44:10unto the disciples and commanded that they should eat.
- 44:13And when they had eaten and were filled, he commanded that they
- 44:15should give unto the multitude. So here's the pattern.
- 44:20They brought the bread and the wine.
- 44:23They offered it to the Lord, not subtracting from what they have.
- 44:28You'll see in a minute. He then breaks the bread, and
- 44:33then he blessed it and he gave it unto the disciples.
- 44:38Now I ask you, how is that multiplying?
- 44:43How is that adding to rather than subtracting from their
- 44:48supply at home, the bread as it was sitting at home in their
- 44:54supply. If they, if they leave it in
- 44:57this selfish realm of what's in it for me, What can I get from
- 45:02you? How can I add to my Kingdom and
- 45:05build up my stores of goods? That bread is very mortal.
- 45:13It's it's temporary. It's going to eat.
- 45:16If they don't eat it, it's going to eventually mold and mildew
- 45:21and decay. But because they offered that
- 45:25mortal offering to Jesus Christ, he sanctified it.
- 45:31He refined it, He purified it, so to speak, and he returns it
- 45:38to them, changed it. It is now an eternal offering to
- 45:46them. They gave to him something that
- 45:49was very mortal and temporary, and in return he gives to them
- 45:55something that is eternal and filled with power.
- 45:59It's going to fill more than their their bodies.
- 46:04It's going to fill their soul. That's why the bread and the
- 46:09water are blessed and sanctified to the souls of all those who
- 46:15partake of it. We give the mortal, He gives the
- 46:21Eternal in return. The same thing applies with
- 46:25every other offering you and I can make to to the Savior.
- 46:29When you bring tithing to the Lord, you're bringing a very
- 46:35mortal offering of money. Earthly money means nothing to
- 46:40God. He's got all of the universe in
- 46:42His hand, but He magnifies, adds to, He multiplies that offering
- 46:50that we give to Him, and He returns it to us in eternally
- 46:56significant ways. These mortal offerings that we
- 47:00make now become eternally significant blessings to us.
- 47:07The time, the energy that you and I devote to the Lord in our
- 47:12callings or with our families or in service to others, God
- 47:17magnifies and multiplies those. He makes it so that all of a
- 47:23sudden he, he's renewing our, our energy.
- 47:28He's not allowing us to deplete it.
- 47:33And as we look at our our general authorities and their
- 47:37wives and their families and what they're offering to the
- 47:42Lord in a consecrated way, I think it's pretty obvious to see
- 47:49how much the Lord is magnifying and adding to them as they're
- 47:57making these these incredibly large sacrifices and consecrated
- 48:03efforts for him. I think it's not difficult to
- 48:08detect how good God is to them to renew their strength and to
- 48:15give them the inspiration and the energy and the and the
- 48:19ability to keep moving forward and in the effort of building up
- 48:25his Kingdom on the earth. And the same principle applies
- 48:28to us who who have whatever calling in the church.
- 48:33If we'll consecrate to the people that we're serving in
- 48:38Christ like ways, if we'll consecrate to our families, our
- 48:41time, our energy, God will magnify and multiply it just
- 48:45like he did with the bread and the wine in this case.
- 48:50It will come back to us refined and sanctified to our souls.
- 48:58It will increase our our character as we become a little
- 49:04bit more like Jesus Christ with each of those instances.
- 49:10And then he gives some descriptions of that sacrament
- 49:14experience. Look closely at verse 7.
- 49:16After talking about giving them a commandment to to do the
- 49:19sacrament. He says this shall you do in
- 49:22remembrance of my body which I have shown unto you.
- 49:26So that bread is remembrance of his body, which is shown unto
- 49:32the Nephites in Lamanites, not just the body in Gethsemane and
- 49:37through the trials and on the cross, his mortal body, but also
- 49:41his resurrected body. When we eat that bread, it's a
- 49:46promise for our immortality, for our resurrected body someday as
- 49:53we think about him and his suffering and subsequent
- 49:58resurrection. And then the cup of the the
- 50:01wine, he says, verse 11 This shall you always do to those who
- 50:05repent and are baptized in my name.
- 50:06And you shall do it in remembrance of my blood which I
- 50:10have shed for you, that you may witness unto the Father that you
- 50:13do always Remember Me. And if you do always Remember
- 50:16Me, you shall have my Spirit to be with you.
- 50:19Just a reminder that the always Remember Me is the one part that
- 50:25appears in both the blessing on the bread and the water.
- 50:29The blessing on the bread has the additional willing to take
- 50:33upon them the name of thy Son Jesus Christ and the 3rd element
- 50:38keep his commandments which he has given them, but they always
- 50:42remember him as right in the middle and it's all by itself on
- 50:46the blessing on the water. So the, the thing that is
- 50:50different in the blessing on the water is it doesn't say they
- 50:53will always have his spirit like it does over in the blessing on
- 50:57the bread. When you're doing those three
- 50:59things, taking his name upon you, always remember him in
- 51:02keeping his commandments, which is given that they may always
- 51:05have his spirit to be with them. Those 3 things that we do lead
- 51:12to that incredible outcome. And in the blessing on the the
- 51:15water, He just says always remember him, that they may have
- 51:20his spirit to be with them. It's not always.
- 51:23But that to me is a beautiful sign that even if I'm struggling
- 51:26to take His name upon me at all times and all things in all
- 51:29places, and even if I'm struggling to keep His
- 51:31commandments to the degree that I know I ought.
- 51:35He always says, if you'll just keep your thoughts focused on
- 51:40me, you'll have my spirit to be with you in those in those
- 51:44moments, in those times. A powerful reminder that once
- 51:48again, if I put my thoughts on the altar, if I put my desires
- 51:54on the altar, He will turn those mortal offerings into eternally
- 52:01significant blessings in return. The the gift of having his
- 52:08spirit to be with us, to guide us.
- 52:11Now in the rest of chapter 18, he gives some some beautiful
- 52:16teachings to these people, some even some cautions in verse 15.
- 52:22Verily, verily, I say to you, you must watch and pray always,
- 52:26lest you be tempted by the devil and you be LED away captive by
- 52:29him. Pray always is not an invitation
- 52:35from Jesus to go and do something.
- 52:37It's an invitation from Jesus Christ to come and follow him
- 52:41and do what he has modeled and what he has done his whole life.
- 52:48Watch and pray always is a defining feature of Jesus
- 52:53Christ's character. Then he he gets into a
- 52:57discussion about the light. Look at verse 24.
- 53:00Therefore hold up your light, that it may shine unto the
- 53:04world. What is the light?
- 53:08He even defines that force. Behold, I am the light which he
- 53:12shall hold up, that which He have seen me do.
- 53:17So he's focusing them not just on the words, not just on the
- 53:21sermons and the doctrines and the theology, but on the example
- 53:26that he has set. Do what you have seen me do.
- 53:30And again, when we strive to keep these commandments to any
- 53:36degree, we're becoming more like him.
- 53:40We're we're following in his footsteps.
- 53:43He was a perfect commandment keeper.
- 53:45We're not perfect, but gratefully He's patient, and He
- 53:49is more than willing to forgive us and extend His mercy and
- 53:53grace when we fall down and when we struggle.
- 53:56And then verse 25 says, And you see that I have commanded that
- 54:00none of you should go away, but rather have commanded that you
- 54:02should come unto me, that you might feel and see Even so you
- 54:08shall do unto the world. And whosoever breaketh this
- 54:11commandment suffer themselves to be LED into temptation, inviting
- 54:17all to come, not stiff arming or rejecting them.
- 54:20Now go to verse 27. Behold, verily, verily, I say
- 54:23unto you, I give unto you another commandment.
- 54:27Thank heaven, every time Jesus Christ gives us a new
- 54:30commandment, we shouldn't say, oh great, another commandment to
- 54:35divide more of my time and energy.
- 54:38No, no, no, this is the the arithmetic of the Lord.
- 54:42It's another opportunity to magnify my soul, to multiply the
- 54:48gifts that God has given me to add to my life.
- 54:52Commandments don't take away from me.
- 54:56So what is the new commandment? And now behold, this is the
- 54:59commandment which I give unto you, that you shall not suffer
- 55:01anyone knowingly to partake of my flesh and blood unworthily,
- 55:05when you shall minister it. So he gives the the disciples
- 55:10that new commandment to guard that that sacrament, keep it
- 55:16sacred, but don't reject anyone from coming.
- 55:21He says don't don't cast any out of your synagogues in verse 32.
- 55:26And now as we come to the conclusion of that first day's
- 55:30visit among these people at the temple, it says while they were
- 55:36overshadowed, he departed from them and ascended into heaven.
- 55:40And the disciples saw and did bear record that he ascended
- 55:43again into heaven. Chapter 19 says Now it came to
- 55:46pass that when Jesus had ascended into heaven, the
- 55:49multitude did disperse and every man did take his wife and his
- 55:53children and did return to his own home.
- 55:56And you would think exhausting they're they're now going to all
- 56:00go straight to bed. It was noised abroad among the
- 56:03people immediately before it was yet dark that the multitude had
- 56:07seen Jesus, and that he administered unto them, and that
- 56:10he would also show himself on the Morrow under the multitude.
- 56:13Yeah, and even all the night it was noised abroad concerning
- 56:16Jesus. And in as in so much did they
- 56:21send forth under the people, there were many an exceedingly
- 56:24great number did labor exceedingly all that night that
- 56:30they might be on the Morrow in the place where Jesus should
- 56:32show himself unto the multitude. So as they're preparing for day
- 56:362, I love how these people are finding that is they hone in on
- 56:45and refine their desires, their physical strength and and their
- 56:52their capacity alone to to do what needs to be done.
- 56:58They're not doing it alone. They're tapping into the
- 57:01strength that they've gained from their consecrated efforts
- 57:05to Jesus Christ, from experiencing those those
- 57:11powerful connections with him, watching him heal their sick and
- 57:15bless their children, partaking of the sacrament for the first
- 57:19time. It has literally renewed their
- 57:22souls to the point where they spend all night, many of them,
- 57:26going and getting as many people as possible to come and see and
- 57:31hear and feel and come to know for themselves the joy and the
- 57:35strength that is promised in sitting at the feet of the
- 57:41Savior and learning from Him and through Him and by Him.
- 57:46So chapter 19 opens and you have this huge multitude and the 12
- 57:52apostles split them into twelve groups.
- 57:54And what do they teach? They teach nothing more than
- 57:57what Jesus had taught. Now, I don't know if you caught
- 58:02that. Brothers and sisters, there's a
- 58:05powerful pattern there. Our prophets, seers, and
- 58:08revelators in in the Temple recommend interview, we are
- 58:13asked, do you sustain the president of the Church of Jesus
- 58:16Christ of Latter Day Saints as the prophet, seer and revelator
- 58:21and as the only person on earth who is authorized to exercise
- 58:24all priesthood keys? Then that is followed up with,
- 58:27Do you sustain the members of the First Presidency in the corn
- 58:29of the 12 apostles as prophets, seers, and revelators?
- 58:36Those are very important principles to to understand when
- 58:42we answer that question. What you're seeing on the page
- 58:46here is prophets, seers, and revelators are called by God,
- 58:51not by popular vote that they're not put on a ballot.
- 58:55We don't have primary and and final elections for them.
- 58:59They're chosen by God and they're on God's errand, not on
- 59:06public opinion. They don't have constituencies
- 59:11that they have to keep going back to and making sure that
- 59:16they're OK. They answer to God.
- 59:20Their focus is on what would thou have me do.
- 59:24They can't just make up doctrine.
- 59:26They can't teach what they want to teach.
- 59:29Their whole mission is to refine their lives, refine their
- 59:34desires and connect with God as prophet, surgeon of laters, find
- 59:38out what he wants and then teach that, teach the words of Jesus
- 59:43Christ. You see that pattern right here
- 59:46as they separated in verse chapter 19, verse 5 into these
- 59:5112 different bodies. And verse 8 says when they had
- 59:54ministered those same words which Jesus had spoken, nothing
- 59:59varying from the words which Jesus had spoken.
- 1:00:03Behold, they knelt again and prayed to the Father in the name
- 1:00:05of Jesus. They're following him so
- 1:00:09beautifully. And brothers and sisters, when
- 1:00:12we raise our hand to sustain the First Presidency in the corner
- 1:00:16of the 12 apostles as prophets, seers, and revelators, that's
- 1:00:19what we're agreeing to uphold them in is being in that role.
- 1:00:24Not in representing my desires, my hopes for doctrine or policy
- 1:00:32in the Church, but to understand what God has inspired them to
- 1:00:38teach us. The words of Jesus Christ,
- 1:00:40nothing varying from what they're getting from God.
- 1:00:43That's the beauty and the blessing and the opportunity
- 1:00:48that is ours as a collective body of Saints in the Church of
- 1:00:52Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, to have these chosen
- 1:00:56servants of the Lord guiding the efforts as we move forward.
- 1:01:01And then they perform baptisms among the group.
- 1:01:07Verse 14 tells us they were encircled about as if it were by
- 1:01:10fire, and it came down from heaven, and the multitude did
- 1:01:15witness it and did bear record, and angels did come down out of
- 1:01:19heaven and administer unto them, and it came to pass it.
- 1:01:23While the angels were ministering unto the disciples,
- 1:01:26behold, Jesus came and stood in the midst and ministered unto
- 1:01:31them. I love this.
- 1:01:33Angels came, preparing the way before him, and then Jesus
- 1:01:37Christ came. So you have the group, you have
- 1:01:40the apostles, you have the angels, you have Jesus.
- 1:01:44And now in the rest of chapter 19 you could read these verses
- 1:01:50almost in parallel to Jesus experience over in the Garden of
- 1:01:54Gethsemane. My dear friend and colleague Gay
- 1:01:57Strathern has has talked about and written a lot about this
- 1:02:02little sequence here in comparing the experience in
- 1:02:06Gethsemane with Peter, James and John and this multitude here in
- 1:02:12the New World. Because in both cases you have
- 1:02:15Jesus going away from the multitude 3 times to pray to the
- 1:02:22Father, just like he went away from Peter, James and John three
- 1:02:25times in Gethsemane. The difference is the.
- 1:02:29So that's the comparison. Now the contrast is when he
- 1:02:32comes to Peter, James, and John, they're sleeping.
- 1:02:36When he comes to these people, they are attentive, they are
- 1:02:42praying. And keep in mind, some of these
- 1:02:44people, many of them maybe have been up all night running around
- 1:02:48and yesterday was a full day, both cognitively and and
- 1:02:53emotionally, physically, mentally, and yet they aren't
- 1:02:58falling asleep. And that's not to to put Peter,
- 1:03:02James and John down. That is not the intent.
- 1:03:05It's a contrast of you. And I have an opportunity to
- 1:03:10follow this example of the the three times that Jesus goes and
- 1:03:16prays. So the first time is in verse 19
- 1:03:18and 20 and 21. The second time, if you want to
- 1:03:22mark your Scriptures is in chapter 19, verse 27 and 28.
- 1:03:27And the third time is 313233. I would invite you to to dig in
- 1:03:34to see what did he pray about? What do we have record of about
- 1:03:38what he's praying and what he's saying to the Father in his
- 1:03:42first prayer that actually started in 19 and continues down
- 1:03:46to to verse 23 and 24, He actually tells Heavenly Father
- 1:03:52these people that I've commanded to pray.
- 1:03:56They're praying to me right now. And in verse 22, He gives us the
- 1:04:00reason why these people are praying to Him.
- 1:04:02I love this verse 22. Father, Thou has given them the
- 1:04:05Holy Ghost because they believe in me.
- 1:04:08Once again, they're putting their belief in Him.
- 1:04:12They're investing something on the altar of the Lord.
- 1:04:14They're sacrificing or consecrating a degree of their
- 1:04:17desires, and in return they're being added to by God giving
- 1:04:25them the Holy Ghost. Can I just suggest that what
- 1:04:28they're offering on the altar doesn't even compare even
- 1:04:31remotely in in size or scope or scale to what God is now
- 1:04:39offering them in return? Just like it doesn't even
- 1:04:43compare when I pay my my tithing, which is a pittance of
- 1:04:47money compared to to the the global scheme of things.
- 1:04:53It can't even come close to comparing with what God gives me
- 1:04:57in return for that small faithful sacrifice.
- 1:05:02So he says, thou seest that they believe in me because thou
- 1:05:04hearest them, and they pray unto me, and they pray unto me
- 1:05:09because I am with them. And that makes that makes a lot
- 1:05:14of sense. If the Savior is there, you're
- 1:05:16going to be addressing him, you're going to be thanking Him,
- 1:05:21you're going to be pleading with Him and asking Him for things.
- 1:05:24Those are all prayerful things, and He is with them.
- 1:05:30Verse 24. It came to pass that when Jesus
- 1:05:32had thus prayed unto the Father, he came unto his disciples.
- 1:05:36Behold, they did still continue without ceasing to pray unto
- 1:05:39Him, and they did not multiply many words, for it was given
- 1:05:42unto them what they should pray, and they were filled with
- 1:05:46desire. I love that they're putting
- 1:05:53their desires to connect with heaven on the altar, and in
- 1:05:57response, they are now filled with desire, but it's desire
- 1:06:01that comes from God to them. And they're giving their words
- 1:06:07to Him and return. He's giving them his words that
- 1:06:12they can now share with him. And somebody was thinking,
- 1:06:15that's weird. Why would God do that?
- 1:06:18Why doesn't He just let them say what they want to say?
- 1:06:21Brothers and sisters, prayer is performed not so that we can
- 1:06:27teach God anything that He doesn't already know.
- 1:06:31He already gets us better than we understand ourselves.
- 1:06:35He doesn't need me to pray to know why I'm doing what I'm
- 1:06:40doing and what I want and what I'm thankful for.
- 1:06:43He already knows all of that. He commands me to pray, not so
- 1:06:48He can learn about me, but He commands me to pray so that I
- 1:06:53can learn about Him, so that I can learn about myself.
- 1:06:58So even if I don't have the words, that's OK.
- 1:07:01I start. I give what little offering I
- 1:07:04have on the altar, and I plead with Him.
- 1:07:07Heavenly Father I I'm weak, I feel empty, I don't know what to
- 1:07:14do or I'm struggling with this or I'm having a hard time
- 1:07:18deciding what to do here or whatever it may be.
- 1:07:21I make that little offering on the altar and I plead with Him
- 1:07:26to give me the words and the feelings and the desires that I
- 1:07:29should have. And that very act of faith
- 1:07:35becomes refining because of Him, not because of me.
- 1:07:41I I give what little offering I have and He magnifies it.
- 1:07:47He multiplies it, He adds to it, and all of a sudden God isn't
- 1:07:52learning new things, but I am. God isn't gaining new knowledge,
- 1:08:00but I am. And the two of us are becoming
- 1:08:06more connected. There's a there's a more
- 1:08:10powerful relationship of trust that's being forged.
- 1:08:15That's why God commands me to pray, not so I can teach him,
- 1:08:21but so that I can learn of Him and so that I can learn about me
- 1:08:25and who he wants me to become and how he will help me in that
- 1:08:30process. So in closing, brothers and
- 1:08:35sisters, God asks us to do a lot in his church and in his
- 1:08:41Kingdom. The gospel of Jesus Christ
- 1:08:44demands everything that we have to give to Him.
- 1:08:50But if we're really honest with ourselves, if I add up all of
- 1:08:53the things that I have and I compare it to all of the things
- 1:08:58that he has, it's not even, not even in the realm of calculus
- 1:09:05can can describe the difference between those two things.
- 1:09:12But you see, God isn't keeping score.
- 1:09:15He's not keeping track. He's not weighing in the
- 1:09:19balance, my offering. He's just asking me to give all
- 1:09:25that I have to him. And in return, he offers to give
- 1:09:31all that he has to us. Is it any wonder that Elder
- 1:09:35Neely Maxwell used to say what an exchange rate.
- 1:09:42May the Lord bless all of us in our efforts to not just keep the
- 1:09:48commandments, not just pay our tithes and offerings, not just
- 1:09:53fulfill our duties and our callings, not just take care of
- 1:09:58children, not just try to keep the commandments in general
- 1:10:04sense to check a box. But rather, have our thoughts
- 1:10:10and our hearts and our desires focused on God and on Jesus
- 1:10:14Christ, and on more joyfully striving to become like Him, to
- 1:10:21seek His will. And then to do it with less
- 1:10:25murmuring, less of a begrudging heart, and more of a sense of
- 1:10:31utter and complete gratitude for a God who holds so much in His
- 1:10:39hands. And yet He holds you and me in
- 1:10:42His heart. Because we're His children and
- 1:10:46He loves us, and He knows how to raise children and He knows what
- 1:10:51is best for us. I love Him with all my heart,
- 1:10:56and I want to give my whole life to Him, knowing that he's not
- 1:11:02just going to take it, He's going to magnify it and multiply
- 1:11:07it and add to it and return it to me in eternal proportions.
- 1:11:14And I'll love him forever for that.
- 1:11:17And I leave that with you. In the name of Jesus Christ,
- 1:11:20Amen. Know that you're loved.
