Speaker 2: the show. Metro News meteorologist Brian Hughes says his words.
• 1:30
Speaker 2: Wall-to-wall sunshine today. Great weather after a foggy start to
• 1:33
Speaker 2: the morning. Temps below 70s. Clear and calm tonight. Lows
• 1:37
Speaker 2: in the upper 40s tomorrow.
• 1:38
  Speaker 6: Sunny.
• 1:39
Speaker 2: Warmer pretty much tomorrow all the way through Saturday. Pretty
• 1:41
Speaker 2: much the same every day. Can't beat it. Temperatures in
• 1:44
Speaker 2: the upper 70s. Great weather.
• 1:46
  Speaker 7: Enjoy.
• 1:46
Speaker 2: Now for me, People say it's great fall weather. It's
• 1:49
Speaker 2: not cool enough for me to call it officially fall weather,
• 1:52
Speaker 2: but that's just me. Download the Metro News television app
• 1:56
Speaker 2: and follow Brian and his team of weather pros on
• 1:58
Speaker 2: social media as well. Of course, what's on everyone's mind
• 2:01
Speaker 2: over the last 24 hours has been the breaking news,
• 2:04
Speaker 2: followed by more breaking news, followed by more breaking news
• 2:06
Speaker 2: with the Charleston Town Center. After not hearing much about
• 2:10
Speaker 2: the town center for a long time, yesterday was different.
• 2:13
Speaker 2: It started with the mayor's appearance on the show yesterday.
• 2:17
Speaker 2: when she dropped a little town center news on us,
• 2:19
Speaker 2: and then it continued throughout the day with an announcement
• 2:21
Speaker 2: late yesterday, first reported by WSAZ television, that the whole
• 2:25
Speaker 2: group that owns the town center says the interior stores
• 2:28
Speaker 2: of the mall will be no more at some point
• 2:30
Speaker 2: in 2027. I'm going to get into all that a
• 2:33
Speaker 2: little bit later on the show. And as we work
• 2:35
Speaker 2: our way there, I will tell you, because everybody's got
• 2:37
Speaker 2: opinions on this, you're welcome to text them in throughout
• 2:40
Speaker 2: the show. via the Tony the Taylor text line 304-935-5008.
• 2:44
Speaker 2: We'll get to that coming up a little bit later on. Also,
• 2:47
Speaker 2: the preps are going on for the state football championships.
• 2:50
Speaker 2: I know you're thinking, well, it's just the first couple
• 2:52
Speaker 2: days of October, but it'll be here before you know it.
• 2:55
Speaker 2: A lot goes into the state football championships over at
• 2:58
Speaker 2: Lately Field. Mike Arbogast, who chairs up the committee there,
• 3:01
Speaker 2: also a member of the Kanawha County Board of Education,
• 3:03
Speaker 2: is going to join us coming up a little bit
• 3:04
Speaker 2: later on in the show as well. I want to
• 3:06
Speaker 2: welcome to the show now our good friend Jermon Schmidt
• 3:08
Speaker 2: from Goodwill Industries of the Summit. Good morning, sir. Welcome
• 3:11
  Speaker 2: to the show.
• 3:11
  Speaker 8: Hey, hey, hey.
• 3:12
  Speaker 1: Thanks, Dave.
• 3:13
Speaker 2: And your big event is coming up, I guess, Night
• 3:15
Speaker 2: at the Monte Carlo. Talk about it.
• 3:17
Speaker 1: That is correct, yeah.
• 3:18
Speaker 8: So every October, around October, we have Night at Monte Carlo.
• 3:22
Speaker 8: I think it's our third year doing it. But October 22nd,
• 3:25
  Speaker 8: it's a Thursday night at Berry Hills. We'll have a
• 3:27
Speaker 8: Night at Monte Carlo again. Actually, Woody's going to be
• 3:30
Speaker 8: there mixing it up and doing all the music stuff
• 3:32
Speaker 8: that he does, getting people hyped up on the dance floor.
• 3:35
Speaker 1: But yeah, great event.
• 3:36
Speaker 8: And it supports our transportation initiatives here locally, like Wheels
• 3:39
Speaker 8: to Work and Mission Mobile, which is basically giving an
• 3:41
Speaker 8: answer to people to whether they need a car or
• 3:44
Speaker 8: they just need us to come to them. We do
• 3:47
Speaker 8: that through those transportation programs. So anyways, that event supports this.
• 3:50
Speaker 8: And we're going to have cigars, bourbon, the dancing, raffle games,
• 3:54
Speaker 8: all kinds of good stuff.
• 3:55
  Speaker 9: And Woody Woods.
• 3:56
  Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
• 3:56
Speaker 8: And Woody Woods, man.
• 3:58
Speaker 9: And Woody Woods, man.
• 3:58
Speaker 2: So how long has this event been going on? Do
• 4:01
Speaker 2: you have any idea?
• 4:01
  Speaker 1: Third year.
• 4:02
  Speaker 2: Okay, third year.
• 4:03
  Speaker 9: Okay.
• 4:03
Speaker 2: Actually, I thought it had been longer than that. But,
• 4:05
Speaker 2: I mean, I guess it's– the reason I thought that, Jamon,
• 4:08
Speaker 2: is because it's become so ingrained in the community now. Um,
• 4:11
Speaker 2: that it's, it's, you know, it just seems like it's
• 4:14
Speaker 2: been here forever, but it really hasn't been.
• 4:16
  Speaker 1: Exactly.
• 4:16
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 4:16
Speaker 2: I feel the same way.
• 4:17
Speaker 8: I think, uh, whenever we opened it up the first year,
• 4:20
Speaker 8: three years ago, people really embrace it. And each year
• 4:22
Speaker 8: after that, as soon as we start getting on socials,
• 4:25
Speaker 8: people are all excited about different things. We post a
• 4:27
Speaker 8: Pinterest board and people go off on that. So yeah,
• 4:30
  Speaker 8: I totally agree.
• 4:30
Speaker 2: So for people that have never been, what exactly goes on?
• 4:33
Speaker 2: I mean, you talked about, you know, the dancing and everything,
• 4:35
Speaker 2: but what's the whole concept of the event? I mean,
• 4:37
Speaker 2: obviously it's in the title. Not at Monte Carlo. Just
• 4:40
Speaker 2: take us through the entire evening.
• 4:41
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 4:41
Speaker 8: So the dancing, of course, is a part of the event.
• 4:44
Speaker 8: But the biggest thing I would say is probably the
• 4:46
Speaker 8: raffle game portion. So you can play raffle games throughout
• 4:49
Speaker 8: the night. You win these tickets. And then we have
• 4:52
Speaker 8: silent auctions also that people are taking part in. Part
• 4:54
Speaker 8: of those silent auctions, you have to use your raffle
• 4:57
Speaker 8: tickets to actually get entered to win. So people are
• 5:00
Speaker 8: playing to basically win these silent auction items. Of course,
• 5:03
Speaker 8: there's auction items you can just bid on throughout the night.
• 5:05
Speaker 8: But those are the main events of the night, other
• 5:07
Speaker 8: than obviously Woody Woods spending it up, having people out
• 5:10
Speaker 8: there dancing. And then the VIP section, for those who
• 5:13
Speaker 8: get VIPs, cigar and bourbon is always in that outer
• 5:16
Speaker 8: deck section of Berry Hills. So you'll usually have 20,
• 5:19
Speaker 8: 30 people out there enjoying the cigars and bourbon and
• 5:21
Speaker 8: having a good time.
• 5:22
Speaker 2: It's just become, Juman, one of those big events every year.
• 5:25
Speaker 2: We have several every year. But one of those big
• 5:29
Speaker 2: events everybody looks forward to, everybody gets dressed up for,
• 5:31
Speaker 2: they come out. Exactly. He said a little night at
• 5:35
Speaker 2: the Monte Carlo. We'll give all the details on that
• 5:37
Speaker 2: coming up a little bit later on, but I want
• 5:38
Speaker 2: to ask you, there's been so many big news items
• 5:41
Speaker 2: out of Goodwill here in the Kanawha Valley here lately,
• 5:44
Speaker 2: even more to come. I've got you scheduled, I think,
• 5:46
Speaker 2: a couple more times on the show to talk about
• 5:48
Speaker 2: different things later this month, but talk about some of
• 5:50
  Speaker 2: the new things.
• 5:50
Speaker 8: Yeah, so this year has been, I mean, it's been
• 5:52
Speaker 8: crazy as far as the growth. We had the original
• 5:55
Speaker 8: Charleston store transform into the outlet. We had Patrick Street
• 5:58
Speaker 8: open up earlier in the year, and then we also
• 6:01
Speaker 8: actually have the Eleanor location coming up online in August.
• 6:05
Speaker 2: Next week? It's crazy. This is Eleanor over in Putnam County.
• 6:09
Speaker 8: Yeah, over in Putnam County, yeah.
• 6:10
Speaker 2: And this is going to be in the, I call
• 6:12
  Speaker 2: it a mall. I don't know exactly what it's called,
• 6:14
Speaker 2: but it's where the Piggly Wiggly and everything is in Eleanor.
• 6:18
Speaker 8: That is correct, yeah. So next Thursday, we'll actually be
• 6:21
Speaker 8: opening up that location. And so that'll be a beautiful
• 6:24
Speaker 8: new location. The last time we opened up an area
• 6:26
Speaker 8: in Putnam was Taze Valley, and I want to say
• 6:28
Speaker 8: that was, man, that may have been five years ago now,
• 6:30
Speaker 8: I think about it. But anyways, yeah, coming back to
• 6:32
Speaker 8: Putnam with a new location.
• 6:34
Speaker 2: All right. And the overall mission, the mission statement, if
• 6:38
Speaker 2: you will, of Goodwill of the Summit.
• 6:39
Speaker 8: Yeah, I would say to keep it simple, it's all
• 6:41
Speaker 8: about helping people on their pathway to a job, a
• 6:45
Speaker 8: better job or career. So that's why we have transportation initiatives.
• 6:50
Speaker 8: We have recovery programs. All of it is geared towards
• 6:54
Speaker 8: helping people become sustainable on their own and take their
• 6:57
Speaker 8: own path in life.
• 6:58
Speaker 2: And that's a real big part of it because, you know, again,
• 7:01
Speaker 2: the ultimate goal, you want to help people. but just
• 7:03
Speaker 2: giving them stuff is not enough. I mean, you want
• 7:07
Speaker 2: to get people back into becoming, you know, members of,
• 7:11
Speaker 2: you know, fruitful members of society.
• 7:13
  Speaker 1: That's exactly it.
• 7:14
Speaker 8: Whether it's like an individual, we have an HR who
• 7:17
Speaker 8: was off for seven years because she was helping her grandmother, right?
• 7:20
Speaker 8: Trying to come back into the workforce or individuals who
• 7:23
Speaker 8: have good jobs, but they lost their car. And so
• 7:25
Speaker 8: we help the whole cycle of helping people just get
• 7:29
Speaker 8: to that point where they need to be, whether it's
• 7:30
Speaker 8: a job, a better job or a career.
• 7:33
Speaker 2: Now, the event normally sells out or gets pretty close.
• 7:37
Speaker 2: So you're going through this year as well. So people
• 7:38
Speaker 2: need to go ahead and get their tickets now. So
• 7:41
Speaker 2: what's the best way to get tickets?
• 7:42
Speaker 8: So on our website, goodwillindustriesofthesummit.com, we have a Night in
• 7:46
Speaker 8: Monte Carlo webpage for it. It has tickets and sponsorships.
• 7:50
Speaker 8: But if you're on socials, also our Facebook has those links.
• 7:53
Speaker 8: So feel free to follow us on there, and then
• 7:55
Speaker 8: you'll see the post coming out. And you can click
• 7:57
Speaker 8: on the Pinterest board or click on the link for
• 7:59
Speaker 8: our website and buy your tickets from there.
• 8:01
Speaker 2: And again, it's just one of those big events that
• 8:03
Speaker 2: everybody looks forward to every year. Talk about sponsorships, because
• 8:06
Speaker 2: I mean, we're not that far away. So people are
• 8:08
Speaker 2: going to be, I mean, you're not going to turn
• 8:10
Speaker 2: anybody away, but the hours are counting down if somebody
• 8:14
Speaker 2: wants to be a sponsor.
• 8:15
  Speaker 1: Exactly.
• 8:15
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 8:16
Speaker 8: So we have various sponsorships that have like printed materials
• 8:20
Speaker 8: added to. So those were probably going to cut off
• 8:22
Speaker 8: pretty soon, probably sometime next week to get them over
• 8:25
Speaker 8: to the print shop and get that done. But Anyways,
• 8:28
Speaker 8: we have sponsorships available actually on our website. It has
• 8:30
Speaker 8: the full package on there that you can see. And
• 8:33
Speaker 8: those offer VIP tickets, regular tickets, the cigar, bourbon area option,
• 8:39
Speaker 8: but also obviously supporting a great cost at the end.
• 8:42
Speaker 2: Of the day. And your highlight over the last couple
• 8:45
Speaker 2: of years with one of these, is there one moment
• 8:46
Speaker 2: that really sticks out? Because I mean... you know, it's
• 8:50
Speaker 2: such a great time. I mean, it really is. And
• 8:52
Speaker 2: you always see the pictures online afterwards and people always
• 8:54
Speaker 2: look at that and go, man, I should have gone
• 8:56
Speaker 2: to that. It's a good time. For Jermon Schmidt personally,
• 8:58
Speaker 2: was there like a highlight, one or two things that
• 9:00
Speaker 2: really stick out the last couple of years?
• 9:01
  Speaker 1: For sure.
• 9:03
Speaker 8: So one of them would be the raffle tickets. So
• 9:06
Speaker 8: the items that we choose for the silent auction raffles
• 9:09
Speaker 8: are always big items because we want it to be exciting.
• 9:11
Speaker 8: And last year it was like looking at a sea
• 9:14
Speaker 8: of like, 50, 60 people in front of me that
• 9:16
Speaker 8: I could see as I'm like digging my hand to
• 9:19
Speaker 8: choose the winner of the silent auction trip. I think
• 9:22
Speaker 8: it was like a, I can't remember where it was,
• 9:24
Speaker 8: but it was a trip somewhere out.
• 9:26
  Speaker 1: Of the country.
• 9:26
Speaker 8: And I was like, Oh my goodness. I was like,
• 9:28
Speaker 8: this is so crazy to watch as people are looking
• 9:30
  Speaker 8: at their tickets.
• 9:31
Speaker 2: And it all is up to you at that point.
• 9:33
  Speaker 1: Exactly.
• 9:33
Speaker 2: No pressure, dude. No pressure.
• 9:36
Speaker 8: If I could give it to somebody else, I will,
• 9:38
Speaker 8: but it'll probably be me again. But yeah, anyways, I
• 9:40
Speaker 8: picked the ticket and it was actually one of my
• 9:43
Speaker 8: good friends. And so I was like, oh no. People
• 9:46
Speaker 8: are going to think I picked it on purpose, but
• 9:48
Speaker 8: it was a good night anyways. But yeah, it's a
• 9:50
Speaker 8: memorable moment for me, for sure.
• 9:51
Speaker 2: All right. Give me, before we let you go, give
• 9:53
  Speaker 2: me a, without mentioning a name, a success story that's
• 9:57
Speaker 2: come out. There's so many, but there's one that really
• 9:59
Speaker 2: comes off the top that you say, this is why
• 10:02
Speaker 2: we do what we do.
• 10:04
Speaker 8: So there was an individual who went through one of
• 10:08
Speaker 8: our recovery programs. They have a program called SUD. And
• 10:11
Speaker 8: that SUD program, we actually brought it to Charleston, I
• 10:14
Speaker 8: think last year, maybe a year and a half ago. Anyways,
• 10:18
Speaker 8: there's a lot of individuals that went through the program.
• 10:20
Speaker 8: And today, because of going through that program, which helps
• 10:24
Speaker 8: basically those individuals hold a job, we transport them to
• 10:28
Speaker 8: all their needs. And if they need to be off work,
• 10:31
Speaker 8: we cover that too. But anyways, that person went through
• 10:34
Speaker 8: this programming. And now today, they're helping individuals in the
• 10:38
Speaker 8: community in Parkersburg get to their dreams and their careers.
• 10:42
Speaker 8: And so we actually had filming last year with that
• 10:45
Speaker 8: individual who works for us. And she was in a
• 10:47
Speaker 8: video talking about an individual that she was currently serving
• 10:50
Speaker 8: in the Parkersburg community. And so I think about that
• 10:52
Speaker 8: and I go, she went through a crazy story with
• 10:55
Speaker 8: her own journey of going through substance abuse and having
• 10:58
Speaker 8: to go through recovery and then cross that line into like,
• 11:02
Speaker 8: now I'm a member of society. Now I'm giving back.
• 11:06
Speaker 2: Nobody, I mean, so many times, Jamond, and you know,
• 11:09
Speaker 2: in these situations, people will say, well, nobody knows what
• 11:13
Speaker 2: I'm going through. Well, here's somebody that lived it before
• 11:16
Speaker 2: you did before that person did. And so with a
• 11:18
Speaker 2: look and you go, well, you don't understand. Yeah, I
• 11:20
  Speaker 2: kind of do.
• 11:21
  Speaker 1: Exactly.
• 11:21
Speaker 8: It's almost like the best person for the job.
• 11:23
  Speaker 2: Exactly. 100%.
• 11:24
  Speaker 1: You can't.
• 11:25
Speaker 2: And here's the thing. You can't train that.
• 11:27
  Speaker 5: Nope.
• 11:27
  Speaker 2: You know, I mean, that's a, that's real world experiences.
• 11:29
Speaker 2: I give us the details, the nights, the times, the websites,
• 11:33
Speaker 2: so on and so forth.
• 11:34
  Speaker 1: Whole shebang.
• 11:35
Speaker 8: So October 22nd at Berry Hills at 7 PM, a
• 11:39
Speaker 8: good one. She's a summit is where you would find
• 11:41
Speaker 8: your tickets at a night in Monte Carlo or go
• 11:43
Speaker 8: to the Facebook page. And then you can purchase them
• 11:45
Speaker 8: from there. Also, they're on discount right now, so it's
• 11:47
Speaker 8: a great opportunity to buy the tickets.
• 11:49
Speaker 2: Get your tickets now. Jermon Schmidt, Goodwill to Summit. Appreciate
• 11:51
Speaker 2: you being here, man. Thanks a lot. 919, I invite

Speaker 3: just don't. This is the time to upgrade and make
• 12:56
Speaker 3: that next trip in comfort and style. This summer, Gene
• 12:59
Speaker 3: and Ryan have loaded down the lot with inventory, both
• 13:02
Speaker 3: new and used, and that means they're sure to have
• 13:04
Speaker 3: the perfect vehicle for you no matter what your summer
• 13:07
Speaker 3: adventures have in store. And you know you're going to
• 13:09
Speaker 3: get the best deal possible at Walker because Gene and
• 13:12
Speaker 3: Ryan built their business the old-fashioned way by making friends.
• 13:15
Speaker 3: There are no gimmicks or games at Walker, just honest,
• 13:18
Speaker 3: fair deals. So don't push that old vehicle beyond its
• 13:21
Speaker 3: limits for another summer or worse. You have to call
• 13:23
Speaker 3: that brother-in-law you hate to come pick up your family in.
• 13:26
Speaker 2: Beckley because that car couldn't make it.
• 13:28
Speaker 3: Back from Myrtle Beach. The new car trucker SUV you've
• 13:31
Speaker 3: been dreaming of is waiting on you now at Walker
• 13:34
Speaker 3: Chevrolet in the shadow of the interstate bridge just off
• 13:36
Speaker 3: the nitro exit of I-64. Walker Chevrolet, making friends one
• 13:41
Speaker 3: deal at a time.
• 13:42
Speaker 10: Rain-X Wiper Blades are the number one wipers in America.
• 13:46
Speaker 10: But we've learned that younger drivers might not know how
• 13:48
Speaker 10: good Rain-X wipers are. So, in a blatant attempt to
• 13:52
Speaker 10: attract Gen Z drivers, we're changing our name from Rain-X
• 13:56
Speaker 10: to Rain-Z. Next time you need wipers, choose Rain-Z. Our
• 14:01
Speaker 10: packaging will still say Rain-X because that's too expensive to change.
• 14:05
Speaker 10: Just know, in our hearts, we're talking to you, Gen Z. Rain-X,
• 14:10
Speaker 10: America's number one choice of wiper blades. Award-winning news, even
• 14:13
  Speaker 10: on weekends.

• 15:02
  Speaker 1: Tony Vitello, text.
• 15:06
Speaker 2: 304-935-5008. Text says, Dave, looking like you and the mayor
• 15:11
Speaker 2: upset the whole group so much that they're permanently closing
• 15:14
Speaker 2: the town center. I bet they don't sell it, keep
• 15:17
Speaker 2: it closed, and use it for their successful business of
• 15:19
Speaker 2: collecting tax breaks from abandoned buildings. That is exactly right.
• 15:22
Speaker 2: We're going to get in that a little bit later on.
• 15:24
Speaker 2: It was the work of myself and the mayor that
• 15:27
Speaker 2: led the whole group to their decision. You're exactly right, Texter.
• 15:29
Speaker 2: Now you figured it. Pretty much the middle of the
• 15:32
Speaker 2: high school football season, and before you know it, it's
• 15:34
Speaker 2: going to be time to crown four new state champions.
• 15:36
Speaker 2: Mike Arbogast joins me this morning in the Jarrett Construction Studios.
• 15:40
Speaker 2: Of course, you know Mike from the Kanawha County Board
• 15:42
Speaker 2: of Education, but he's here this morning in his role
• 15:44
Speaker 2: as a director and community chair for the WVSSAC State
• 15:48
Speaker 2: Football Championships at Lately Field. Mike, good morning and welcome
• 15:52
  Speaker 2: to the show.
• 15:52
Speaker 9: Good morning, Dave. Thanks for having me in.
• 15:54
Speaker 2: Now, we're not trying to force a season here, but
• 15:56
Speaker 2: it's soon going to be time.
• 15:58
Speaker 9: The clock is running.
• 15:59
Speaker 2: Yeah. We'll get here quickly, I'm sure. There's so much
• 16:02
Speaker 2: work that goes into this.
• 16:04
Speaker 9: There is. Matter of fact, we've met multiple times already.
• 16:09
Speaker 9: Tim Brady, who courses the CVB, and they are the
• 16:11
Speaker 9: actual host of the state football championships, and Joe Varney
• 16:14
Speaker 9: over at Lately. So we've been in communication. We're having
• 16:17
Speaker 9: our big meeting on Thursday. We have close to 60
• 16:20
Speaker 9: people that actually come in and are part of it,
• 16:24
Speaker 9: part of the championship committee, and serve as roles. There's
• 16:30
Speaker 9: a lot of behind-the-scenes things that people don't see, and
• 16:32
Speaker 9: they don't need to see that as far as security,
• 16:35
Speaker 9: taking care of the teams, making sure the cheerleaders are
• 16:38
Speaker 9: taken care of, bands taken care of, the media, of course,
• 16:41
Speaker 9: the officials. So we try to pay attention to detail.
• 16:45
Speaker 9: We feel like we're in year three, believe it or not, already.
• 16:49
Speaker 9: We felt like we had bumps in the road, but
• 16:51
Speaker 9: we felt like we had success the first two years.
• 16:54
Speaker 9: And the first year was kind of pressure packed because
• 16:57
Speaker 9: of the great job that Wheeling did for a number
• 16:59
Speaker 9: of years. And we knew we were going to be
• 17:02
Speaker 9: under the radar. So we attacked it that way.
• 17:04
Speaker 2: What were some of the things maybe from year one that, okay,
• 17:09
Speaker 2: you got year one under your belt and you said, okay, well,
• 17:11
Speaker 2: this worked. This didn't. We want to change the time
• 17:15
Speaker 2: on this. We want to change the venue on that.
• 17:17
Speaker 2: And I'm sure... I mean, as you said, Wheeling did
• 17:19
Speaker 2: this for many, many years, and they did a great
• 17:21
  Speaker 2: job with it.
• 17:22
  Speaker 9: Yes, they did.
• 17:23
Speaker 2: But it is constantly a learning experience. What were some
• 17:25
Speaker 2: of the things that you looked at and said, maybe
• 17:28
Speaker 2: we'll do this a little bit differently?
• 17:29
Speaker 9: It is. And they were minor type things that we
• 17:31
Speaker 9: had to adjust from year one. For example, we had
• 17:35
Speaker 9: everybody getting dropped off on Piedmont, the team's coming through
• 17:39
Speaker 9: and one of the coaches said hey mike man you
• 17:41
Speaker 9: know is there any way we i don't have to
• 17:43
Speaker 9: make my kids walk across the field the home team
• 17:45
Speaker 9: over in the press box so we said yeah absolutely
• 17:48
Speaker 9: so now we have a minimum the home team uh
• 17:51
Speaker 9: on the west end of the stadium they can get
• 17:53
Speaker 9: off the bus and come straight in and in coordinating
• 17:55
Speaker 9: times you know we have the equipment dropped off a
• 17:57
Speaker 9: day early Um, and we have a group of guys
• 18:01
Speaker 9: that go in and do all the locker room prep. They, they, uh,
• 18:04
Speaker 9: buff and shine the helmets and hang up the jerseys.
• 18:06
  Speaker 2: I mean, it's gotta be pretty cool. I, something, I
• 18:08
Speaker 2: guess I, as long as I've been doing this and
• 18:10
Speaker 2: been in the media, been around sports that I did,
• 18:12
Speaker 2: I just never realized was part of it. So when
• 18:14
Speaker 2: these teams come down from. Fill in names here, whatever
• 18:17
Speaker 2: the school is. Their uniforms are already up there. The
• 18:21
Speaker 2: helmets are already buffed and shined and ready to go.
• 18:25
Speaker 2: And that's got to be a good feeling for a
• 18:26
Speaker 2: kid who might have a little bit of nervous energy anyway,
• 18:30
Speaker 2: you know, walking through, maybe playing for the first time or,
• 18:33
Speaker 2: you know, in their career walking through. And seeing that
• 18:35
Speaker 2: helmet at this point of the season has already shined up.
• 18:38
Speaker 2: And they didn't do it. The coaches didn't do it.
• 18:40
Speaker 2: Your volunteers did it.
• 18:41
Speaker 9: Yes, absolutely. And that's what we wanted. I mean, we
• 18:43
  Speaker 9: want this to be a bowl-type experience and a bowl-type
• 18:46
Speaker 9: atmosphere and put it, you know, to the college-level type thing.
• 18:49
Speaker 9: So hopefully the kids are excited about that when they
• 18:52
Speaker 9: come in. But there's more to it than that. You know,
• 18:54
Speaker 9: they come to town early. Tim has worked with, you know,
• 18:58
Speaker 9: the people at GoMark Park. And then we've worked with
• 19:02
Speaker 9: the people at the Capitol.
• 19:04
  Speaker 5: So, yeah.
• 19:05
Speaker 9: We have activities planned for the, for the teams that
• 19:07
Speaker 9: they choose to participate. You know, a lot of times
• 19:10
Speaker 9: coaches go, no, Mike, we're not interested in that stuff.
• 19:12
Speaker 9: We're there to win a state football championship. And I
• 19:14
  Speaker 9: get it. Exactly.
• 19:16
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 19:16
Speaker 9: And that, that may be a small distraction, but also
• 19:19
Speaker 9: a time killer. And then they're, they're also welcome to
• 19:21
Speaker 9: come to the other games as well.
• 19:23
Speaker 2: Well, I think sometimes also it gets them out of
• 19:25
Speaker 2: their own head a little bit.
• 19:26
  Speaker 9: Yes.
• 19:28
Speaker 2: Not to play amateur psychologist here, but I'm just saying
• 19:31
Speaker 2: that in that situation, you got to, You know, you're
• 19:33
Speaker 2: an athlete. You sit around and you got too much
• 19:35
Speaker 2: time to think sometimes. Maybe you do need a little
• 19:38
Speaker 2: bit of a, you need to have a good meal.
• 19:39
Speaker 2: You need to go out and enjoy something going on
• 19:41
Speaker 2: in the town, you know, to kind of stop thinking,
• 19:44
Speaker 2: stop overthinking it as coaches say.
• 19:46
Speaker 9: And I coached at South Charleston high school and I
• 19:48
Speaker 9: get it. You know, when you get to that level.
• 19:49
Speaker 9: and to that point in the year, you're trying to
• 19:51
Speaker 9: win a state football championship. But we do have sit-down
• 19:56
Speaker 9: meals for them as well here at local restaurants. I mean,
• 19:58
Speaker 9: it's not like they're not going– to a fast food
• 20:02
Speaker 9: place Tim's arranged that and I helped him out with
• 20:04
Speaker 9: one of them down at Eagle's Nest but so the
• 20:07
Speaker 9: kids get to go in with the coaches and have
• 20:09
Speaker 9: a sit down meals and we also have a banquet
• 20:13
Speaker 9: on Thursday night where we give away 10 $ 1, 000 scholarships
• 20:18
Speaker 9: to students statewide and their parents are invited down Dr.
• 20:21
Speaker 9: Paula Potter our superintendent chairs that she's done it from
• 20:24
Speaker 9: year one forward. So that's a nice event. They do
• 20:28
Speaker 9: a great job with that. And that's over to Marriott.
• 20:31
Speaker 2: And again, that's part of the experience because the game
• 20:34
Speaker 2: itself is why they're here. But most of these athletes,
• 20:38
  Speaker 2: I mean, let's be honest, Mike, you know, you're a
• 20:40
Speaker 2: former coach. You know this, most of them. This may be,
• 20:43
Speaker 2: if it's not the last game that they play, if
• 20:45
Speaker 2: they go, if they're lucky enough to go on and
• 20:47
Speaker 2: play at one of the, you know, up on a
• 20:49
Speaker 2: higher level, it's one of the last games more than
• 20:51
Speaker 2: likely that they're going to play. And they don't want
• 20:54
Speaker 2: to just think about their championship or their run in
• 20:57
Speaker 2: the playoffs or the run in the championships. It's the
• 21:00
Speaker 2: experience that goes along with it, and that's a big
• 21:02
  Speaker 2: part of it.
• 21:03
Speaker 9: They're going to remember the lifetime, and that's why we
• 21:05
Speaker 9: want it to be a positive experience. I mean, you
• 21:07
Speaker 9: think about it, we hook up with our buddies, and
• 21:09
Speaker 9: they still talk about you know, in their fifties and
• 21:12
Speaker 9: sixties and still talk about what happened back in the
• 21:14
Speaker 9: high school days of playing ball.
• 21:16
Speaker 2: What was supposed to have happened.
• 21:17
  Speaker 9: Sometimes.
• 21:18
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 21:19
Speaker 2: Talking to Mike Arbigast. Uh, but, uh, how many people
• 21:22
Speaker 2: does it take off the top of your head to
• 21:24
  Speaker 2: pull this thing?
• 21:25
Speaker 9: We have close to 60. Okay. Um, now that, that
• 21:28
Speaker 9: also includes, you know, we worked with Charleston police department,
• 21:31
Speaker 9: Joey Crawford at the sheriff's office. So that includes that security.
• 21:35
Speaker 9: And then of course you have your, uh, The team
• 21:39
Speaker 9: hosts that come down, the officials host, the band host,
• 21:42
Speaker 9: cheerleading hosts. I have two co-directors, Jim Hamrick and Bryce Castor,
• 21:46
Speaker 9: who are both longtime legend coaches here in the state
• 21:49
Speaker 9: of West Virginia. So they assist with that, too. Then
• 21:52
Speaker 9: you think about, you know, you've got to have VIP hosts.
• 21:56
Speaker 9: And Tim's really good about taking care of our people
• 22:00
Speaker 9: that are working this. He puts up a hospitality room,
• 22:03
Speaker 9: and we make sure they get fed while they're there working.
• 22:06
  Speaker 9: So about 60.
• 22:07
Speaker 2: And you can always use more? I mean, if people
• 22:09
Speaker 2: are listening right now and they say, well, this sounds
• 22:11
Speaker 2: like something cool I'd like to get involved with, you're
• 22:14
Speaker 2: good at this point?
• 22:16
Speaker 9: We actually got all the positions filled at this point.
• 22:18
  Speaker 5: Okay, cool.
• 22:18
Speaker 9: That's good. That's good to hear. But, you know, anybody
• 22:20
Speaker 9: that wants to come around, give me a shout. Yeah.
• 22:22
Speaker 2: All right. You're not hard to find.
• 22:23
  Speaker 9: All right.
• 22:24
Speaker 2: I got a couple texts here for you, okay?
• 22:26
  Speaker 9: Okay, sure.
• 22:27
Speaker 2: One says, I think you guys do a great job
• 22:28
Speaker 2: with the state football championship. One thing I would like
• 22:30
Speaker 2: to see, though, is that giant yellow wall that sits
• 22:33
Speaker 2: behind one of the zones. How about putting some paint
• 22:36
Speaker 2: on it? Or better yet, maybe... uh clean it up
• 22:38
Speaker 2: clean up the weeds are going over top of it
• 22:40
Speaker 2: really make charleston shine i.
• 22:42
Speaker 9: Certainly won't argue argue that um i'm not actually in
• 22:45
Speaker 9: charge of lately phil but you know what i am
• 22:47
Speaker 9: on the board of education how about i have a
• 22:49
Speaker 9: conversation with joe varney thank.
• 22:50
Speaker 2: You for that by the way jack says for arbor
• 22:53
Speaker 2: gas even though the majorette festival was last week one
• 22:56
Speaker 2: thing that ruined it uh handing out these stupid medals
• 22:58
Speaker 2: to every school instead of giving third place second place
• 23:01
Speaker 2: and first place trophies in each category no reason for
• 23:03
Speaker 2: these kids to work hard to and have after-school practices.
• 23:06
Speaker 2: Everybody gets a medal. A lot of people in the
• 23:07
Speaker 2: stands do not like this. Please stop at the medals
• 23:09
Speaker 2: and bring back the trophies.
• 23:11
Speaker 9: Okay, I'm not in charge of that personally either, but...
• 23:14
Speaker 9: Is there anything else that.
• 23:17
Speaker 2: People would like to talk to Mike Arbogast about things
• 23:19
Speaker 2: he has nothing to do with? What about the closing
• 23:22
Speaker 2: of the town center, Mike? Do you want to weigh.
• 23:24
Speaker 9: In on that? I hate that. I remember the days
• 23:28
Speaker 9: when it boomed, that's for sure. I'd love to see
• 23:31
Speaker 9: something good happen with that property. But back to the
• 23:33
Speaker 9: Majorette Festival, we did help, but the Board of Education
• 23:35
Speaker 9: members do come and Hand out the awards. And we
• 23:39
Speaker 9: do have a guy, Mark Davis, at Kanawha County Schools
• 23:42
Speaker 9: that's over music and arts in Kanawha County Schools. And
• 23:44
Speaker 9: he does a fantastic job, man. I've worked with him
• 23:47
Speaker 9: when I was principal at South Charleston High School, and
• 23:50
Speaker 9: they do a great job. And I'm really not sure
• 23:52
Speaker 9: how to answer that question. I don't know what the...
• 23:55
Speaker 9: background is on that.
• 23:56
Speaker 2: We'll look into it we'll look into it you know
• 23:58
Speaker 2: your um your group couldn't do this uh mike without
• 24:02
Speaker 2: a lot of buy-in from the businesses as well when
• 24:04
Speaker 2: it was first announced a couple years ago that this
• 24:06
Speaker 2: championship after so many years in wheeling island stadium was
• 24:08
Speaker 2: coming back to the capital city you know so much
• 24:11
Speaker 2: goes into it but you got to have a buy-in
• 24:13
Speaker 2: from the city it's been the businesses the administration the
• 24:16
Speaker 2: county I mean, everybody's got to kind of come together
• 24:19
  Speaker 2: on this.
• 24:19
Speaker 9: And Mayor Goodwin's been great to work with as well.
• 24:22
Speaker 9: And like I say, our direct contact is Tim Brady,
• 24:24
Speaker 9: who's the head of the CVB. And Tim does a
• 24:27
Speaker 9: great job, but you are correct. And it's been embraced
• 24:31
Speaker 9: by the city of Charleston and the Kanawha Valley at large.
• 24:34
Speaker 9: And we do have several sponsors that have stepped up
• 24:36
Speaker 9: to help us. Namely, you know, here again, restaurants, and
• 24:41
Speaker 9: they're allowing us to come in and do a sit-down
• 24:43
Speaker 9: meal that, you know, Tim gets that worked out with them.
• 24:46
Speaker 9: And then, of course, Tim's also in charge of making
• 24:48
Speaker 9: sure the hotels are all taken care of for our
• 24:51
Speaker 9: kids that are coming in. And, you know, our big
• 24:54
Speaker 9: thing is we want the fans to enjoy it. And
• 24:56
Speaker 9: we've had great crowds. We've had over 10,000 people, not
• 25:00
Speaker 9: paid attendance, but 10,000 people attend those games the last
• 25:03
Speaker 9: two years. And it has seemed exciting. football games and
• 25:07
Speaker 9: i don't you know three of the four state championships
• 25:10
Speaker 9: last year went down to the wire to the last
• 25:12
Speaker 9: play of the game how often you see that uh
• 25:15
Speaker 9: so it was exciting to see and i think we're
• 25:17
Speaker 9: going to have the same thing this year i mean
• 25:19
Speaker 9: you look at double a right now it is packed
• 25:21
Speaker 9: at the top and in each category each one of
• 25:24
Speaker 9: these classifications they're anywhere from you know six to eight
• 25:27
Speaker 9: teams that could potentially step forward to win this thing.
• 25:30
Speaker 2: And you know the new power index that we do
• 25:33
Speaker 2: hit yesterday. You can go to wvmetronews.com if you haven't
• 25:36
Speaker 2: seen that. Also, the playoff rankings will come out every Tuesday,
• 25:40
  Speaker 2: I think, so you've got a chance to take a
• 25:42
Speaker 2: look at those today as well.
• 25:43
Speaker 9: Yep, and they're jockeying for position. I mean, you want
• 25:46
Speaker 9: a home field advantage when you can, when you can
• 25:48
Speaker 9: get those things. I know we used to always, we
• 25:51
Speaker 9: looked at that thing close every week, trying to make sure,
• 25:54
Speaker 9: see if we were going to be able to get
• 25:55
Speaker 9: a home game advantage.
• 25:57
Speaker 2: And this has been, I mean, this season so far
• 26:00
Speaker 2: has been really exciting for Kanawha Valley. I mean, there's
• 26:02
Speaker 2: been some really good, I mean, you've mentioned South Charleston
• 26:06
Speaker 2: no less than 78 times now. So I want to
• 26:09
Speaker 2: make sure– I'm just messing with you, man. But I'm
• 26:11
Speaker 2: just saying it's been a resurgent year after they struggled
• 26:14
Speaker 2: the last couple of years. They've done well. We know
• 26:16
Speaker 2: what GW's done. We know what Herbert Hoover's doing right
• 26:19
Speaker 2: here in the Kanawha Valley. There's some quality football people.
• 26:21
Speaker 9: And those two teams you just mentioned are stacked. I've
• 26:24
Speaker 9: watched Hoover play and GW play, and there is some
• 26:28
Speaker 9: good football going on in the Valley. I encourage people
• 26:30
Speaker 9: to get out and go watch some games. They've had
• 26:33
Speaker 9: good crowds at the games that I've been at. Um,
• 26:36
Speaker 9: and here again, it's exciting time of year. If you
• 26:38
Speaker 9: like high school football, which I, I love.
• 26:41
  Speaker 7: I do.
• 26:41
Speaker 2: I love it as well. Texas, anyone, so you're a
• 26:43
Speaker 2: popular guy here, Mike, has anyone thought about having a
• 26:46
Speaker 2: parade with the teams and bands of all the playoff
• 26:48
Speaker 2: teams before the first game? That could be something extra
• 26:51
Speaker 2: family oriented. that people could attend like a championship parade.
• 26:53
Speaker 9: Thank you for that. And yes, we have discussed that.
• 26:57
Speaker 9: And the issue is, is getting the, all the teams
• 27:00
Speaker 9: in town to do that. I mean, some of the
• 27:01
Speaker 9: teams don't play till Saturday and they do travel. Uh,
• 27:05
Speaker 9: but we, we talked about that initially trying to do
• 27:07
Speaker 9: some type of parade, but, uh, if you're a Martinsburg
• 27:11
Speaker 9: high school, they've been here the last two years and
• 27:13
Speaker 9: you're playing on Saturday, you know, when would you have it?
• 27:16
Speaker 9: You got games on Friday at noon at seven o'clock
• 27:19
Speaker 9: and then Got to banquet on Thursday night. So where
• 27:22
Speaker 9: that sounds good in theory.
• 27:23
  Speaker 8: It is.
• 27:24
  Speaker 1: It's a great idea.
• 27:24
  Speaker 9: And I'll do. I think it's a great idea. I'm
• 27:26
Speaker 9: not sure that we could actually pull that off because
• 27:28
  Speaker 9: that was discussed.
• 27:30
  Speaker 11: All right.
• 27:30
Speaker 2: Give us the dates again, Mike.
• 27:32
Speaker 9: December 4th and 5th. Friday, Saturday. Hang on just a second.
• 27:36
Speaker 9: Let me double check that. It's going to get here quick.
• 27:39
Speaker 9: I know that. That would be Friday and Saturday. December
• 27:45
  Speaker 9: 4th and 5th.
• 27:47
Speaker 2: I want to make sure that you make all efforts
• 27:49
Speaker 2: to attend because it is an exciting time. I want
• 27:52
Speaker 2: to ask you to switch gears here for just one second.
• 27:55
Speaker 2: I didn't tell you we were going to do this,
• 27:56
Speaker 2: but we're going to do it because it's the way
• 27:57
Speaker 2: I roll. As a board member, stepping away from that role,
• 28:01
Speaker 2: but as a board member of the Kanawha County Board
• 28:03
Speaker 2: of Education, Mike, when voters go to the polls next
• 28:06
Speaker 2: month here in Kanawha County, they're going to be looking
• 28:08
Speaker 2: at this education levy, same one that's been in effect
• 28:11
Speaker 2: since the 1930s. Anything you want to say about that?
• 28:15
Speaker 9: I think it's– Kanawha County has– and myself included. I
• 28:19
Speaker 9: live here in Kanawha County, and I voted for that levy,
• 28:21
Speaker 9: and I vote for the ambulance levy. You know, I
• 28:24
Speaker 9: think it's important that we support these levies that are
• 28:28
Speaker 9: doing good for our communities. And it's important for this
• 28:33
Speaker 9: thing to pass. And I've seen– Some posts. And do
• 28:38
Speaker 9: you know that everything you read on social media and
• 28:40
Speaker 9: Facebook's not necessarily true, Dave?
• 28:42
  Speaker 6: Oh, no.
• 28:43
Speaker 9: I try to educate everyone.
• 28:45
  Speaker 10: No.
• 28:45
Speaker 9: Really? Wow. So just for a couple things. Number one,
• 28:49
Speaker 9: I'll say about this quickly without going into the details,
• 28:53
Speaker 9: is that your taxes do not go up. This is
• 28:56
Speaker 9: an existing levy. And I've also had people say, well,
• 28:58
Speaker 9: there's already three things on my tax ticket. Well, the
• 29:01
Speaker 9: first one is the state funding formula. That's not what
• 29:04
Speaker 9: this is. And the one on the bottom, the legislature
• 29:07
Speaker 9: passed a few years ago, for whatever reason, I'm sure
• 29:09
Speaker 9: they had rationale for it, that the libraries cannot run
• 29:12
Speaker 9: their own levy. They had to run it through the
• 29:14
Speaker 9: school system. So the third one you see goes to
• 29:17
Speaker 9: the libraries and ours is the one in the middle.
• 29:21
Speaker 9: It's about 20% of our budget. It's important. It supports
• 29:24
Speaker 9: extracurricular activities. It got the, you know, the voters wanted
• 29:28
Speaker 9: AstroTurf on the fields and that passed and There's a
• 29:32
Speaker 9: shelf life on those, so this current levy that we're
• 29:35
Speaker 9: trying to push through will will go in toward repair
• 29:38
Speaker 9: and replacement as time comes for those for the wear
• 29:41
Speaker 9: and tear on that um And I've seen good from that.
• 29:45
Speaker 9: I know there's people out there that say, ah, you
• 29:47
Speaker 9: shouldn't have wasted that money on the AstroTurf. Well, it's
• 29:50
Speaker 9: benefited our communities. There's youth leagues on there, there's soccer leagues, lacrosse, football,
• 29:56
Speaker 9: there's a lot of people using it within the communities,
• 29:58
  Speaker 9: and I think it's been a great thing. And curriculum-wise,
• 30:02
Speaker 9: and something I push for even as a principal, we're
• 30:05
Speaker 9: wanting to get the CTE programs and robotics programs down
• 30:09
Speaker 9: to our middle schools, and I think that's important. You know,
• 30:11
Speaker 9: not every kid's Once they go to college, they're going
• 30:14
Speaker 9: to be able to go to college. But, you know,
• 30:16
Speaker 9: our goal as school administrators and school teachers is to
• 30:20
Speaker 9: prepare our kids for life after high school where they
• 30:23
Speaker 9: can be contributors to society. And the more things that
• 30:26
Speaker 9: we can offer along those lines, the better off we're
• 30:29
Speaker 9: going to be. So, you know, there's some other things
• 30:32
Speaker 9: on there. They're wanting to– Paul is wanting to upgrade
• 30:35
Speaker 9: the playground equipment for elementary schools in the county, and
• 30:39
Speaker 9: that will come from this levy. And I– And I
• 30:41
Speaker 9: will tell you this, everything is online. If you go
• 30:44
Speaker 9: to the Kanawha County Schools website, if you have questions
• 30:47
Speaker 9: about it, please educate yourself about it. Call up the
• 30:51
Speaker 9: central office and ask questions if you have something specific.
• 30:55
Speaker 9: But I will say this about Dr. Potter, she is
• 30:58
Speaker 9: transparent and she's trying to be as transparent as possible.
• 31:01
Speaker 9: So everything with our budgeting... And what the levy specifically
• 31:05
Speaker 9: goes for is readily available on the Kanawha County Schools website.
• 31:09
Speaker 9: Thank you for asking about that.
• 31:10
  Speaker 6: All right.
• 31:10
Speaker 2: Again, one other question here for you, Mike.
• 31:12
  Speaker 6: Great.
• 31:13
Speaker 2: Is the price going up to $ 75 a seat this
• 31:16
Speaker 2: year while I have to stay at $ 50? I know
• 31:18
Speaker 2: I'm exaggerating, but we've witnessed a decline in attendance during
• 31:21
Speaker 2: the regular season. As admission prices have gone up, it
• 31:24
Speaker 2: costs a lot to get into these games for large families.
• 31:26
Speaker 9: Yeah, well, I'm not in charge of pricing, but that is,
• 31:32
Speaker 9: to my knowledge, the SSAC is in charge of all
• 31:35
Speaker 9: state tournaments, including the playoff games. And to my knowledge,
• 31:40
Speaker 9: that price has not gone up. Don't quote me on that.
• 31:45
Speaker 9: But that would be a question for the Secondary Schools
• 31:47
Speaker 9: Activities Commission, and they're also readily available. They have websites
• 31:52
Speaker 9: and phone numbers. You can give them a call and
• 31:54
Speaker 9: find out. If it's going up, to my knowledge, it
• 31:56
Speaker 9: is not. I have not been told that.
• 31:57
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 31:58
  Speaker 1: Hopefully it won't.
• 31:58
Speaker 2: Mike Arbogast, I appreciate you being here, man. It's always
• 32:00
  Speaker 2: a pleasure.
• 32:01
Speaker 9: Dave, thanks for having me.
• 32:02
Speaker 2: You know, I'm just riding you a little bit about
• 32:03
Speaker 2: South Charleston. It's okay. Being a Logan guy.
• 32:05
Speaker 9: Spent a lot of time there, and also we spent
• 32:08
Speaker 9: a lot of time in the L.A. area playing ball
• 32:10
Speaker 9: down there back in the day.
• 32:11
  Speaker 11: Yeah.
• 32:12
Speaker 9: Great to see you, and I'm glad you're up and
• 32:15
Speaker 9: about and doing well.
• 32:16
  Speaker 11: All right.
• 32:16
Speaker 2: Appreciate it, man. Thanks a lot. 21 minutes away from 10.

• 36:04
Speaker 2: along to you, checking the email there during the break.
• 36:06
Speaker 2: I don't know whether I'm supposed to mention this or not,
• 36:08
Speaker 2: but I kind of make up my own rules anyway.
• 36:11
Speaker 2: A company email just went out. Our own Chris Lawrence said,
• 36:14
Speaker 2: Picking up a prestigious national honor from the National Association
• 36:18
Speaker 2: of State Radio Networks, his coverage of the July floods,
• 36:21
Speaker 2: officially named Best Newscast of 2026 by the organization. Cool
• 36:27
Speaker 2: stuff on that. We'll have more about that coming up.
• 36:29
Speaker 2: But Mr. Lawrence, congratulations, man. That is good stuff. Good
• 36:33
Speaker 2: stuff in a tragic situation. Of course, Chris's coverage of
• 36:36
Speaker 2: the July floods, officially named Best Newscast Nationwide of 2026.
• 36:42
Speaker 2: by the National Association of State Radio Networks. So congratulations, Mr. Lawrence.
• 36:47
Speaker 2: All right, so let's get into this town center thing. Now,
• 36:50
Speaker 2: you've heard me give my opinion of the Charleston Town
• 36:53
Speaker 2: Center on this show, which was, I mean, in decline
• 36:57
Speaker 2: when I started doing this show nearly six and a
• 37:00
Speaker 2: half years ago. But it's gone drastically downhill ever since.
• 37:06
Speaker 2: And look, Arbogast and I were just talking about that.
• 37:09
Speaker 2: We all remember the town center. of the 1980s and 1990s.
• 37:14
Speaker 2: I didn't grow up in Charleston in the Valley here
• 37:17
Speaker 2: like Mike did, but I can certainly remember as a
• 37:20
Speaker 2: teenager coming to the town center and, and how cool
• 37:23
Speaker 2: it was, you know, Logan, where I grew up at
• 37:25
Speaker 2: that time, didn't even have a McDonald's or a Taco Bell. Uh,
• 37:30
Speaker 2: so at the time it was so cool to come here,
• 37:34
Speaker 2: walk up to that picnic area. You know, I've always
• 37:37
Speaker 2: been a foodie, even as a teenager and, and to
• 37:40
Speaker 2: look at all those choices, man, And, of course, the
• 37:43
Speaker 2: shopping that went along with it, too. And coming to
• 37:46
Speaker 2: the town center was a rite of passage when you
• 37:50
Speaker 2: came to the, say, basketball tournament or a concert event
• 37:53
Speaker 2: or whatever. So what went wrong? Well, several things. First
• 38:01
Speaker 2: of all, the model of downtown malls where you pay
• 38:07
Speaker 2: for parking is pretty much done nationwide. So the development
• 38:13
Speaker 2: out at South Ridge and the shops at Trace Fork,
• 38:16
Speaker 2: et cetera, et cetera, that certainly didn't help. But a
• 38:21
Speaker 2: simple Google search will show you the model of a
• 38:25
Speaker 2: mall like the Charleston Town Center in a downtown area
• 38:29
Speaker 2: where you have to pay for parking. It's pretty much
• 38:32
Speaker 2: over in America right now. I mean, that particular model
• 38:35
Speaker 2: of shopping malls. And look, I have always said shopping
• 38:38
Speaker 2: malls are always going to be around. There will always
• 38:40
Speaker 2: be a place because sometimes people just like to go look.
• 38:42
Speaker 2: I know people order online. I don't, but some people do.
• 38:46
Speaker 2: They order online. I get that. But there's something to
• 38:48
Speaker 2: be said for just going and looking at stuff. But
• 38:51
Speaker 2: the model that the town center has, it just ain't
• 38:54
Speaker 2: happening around the country. And as I said, I referenced
• 38:58
Speaker 2: the online shopping aspect of it. The perceived threats... of
• 39:06
Speaker 2: the town center not being safe due to the homeless
• 39:08
Speaker 2: or whatever, as I said, perceived, perceived, and you're going
• 39:14
Speaker 2: to have problems. So the mall is on the decline,
• 39:18
Speaker 2: all right? This Hull group gets a hold of it.
• 39:22
Speaker 2: And look, I interviewed the man, Mr. Hull himself, about
• 39:27
Speaker 2: a Southern as a guy as you could possibly get
• 39:30
Speaker 2: out of Augusta GA, which I like that part about him.
• 39:36
Speaker 2: And you thought, we thought, that he and the company
• 39:43
Speaker 2: really wanted to do the right thing and to make
• 39:47
Speaker 2: the mall flourish again. Well, a simple online search of
• 39:56
Speaker 2: the way that the whole group does business will tell
• 39:58
Speaker 2: you that's not the way the whole group does business, period,
• 40:03
Speaker 2: in any market. And so the rumors begin, the Facebook
• 40:08
Speaker 2: journalists with their degrees of Zuckerberg U put out what
• 40:13
Speaker 2: they knew, what they thought they know, whatever. So yesterday,
• 40:16
Speaker 2: fast forward to yesterday, and I have the mayor. uh,
• 40:21
Speaker 2: mayor Goodwin on this show is she comes on the
• 40:22
Speaker 2: first Monday of every month to take questions, comments, concerns,
• 40:25
Speaker 2: big props for that, because I can name on one hand,
• 40:28
Speaker 2: the number of political leaders that step into this studio
• 40:31
Speaker 2: and say, open line, I'll take whatever you got. She's
• 40:34
  Speaker 2: one most won't.
• 40:35
  Speaker 9: She does.
• 40:37
Speaker 2: Um, the mayor was on this show yesterday. And when
• 40:41
Speaker 2: I ask about the town center, you know, she said
• 40:44
Speaker 2: she was hopeful that a group of, of, of local folks, um,
• 40:51
Speaker 2: wanted to do something with it. And then around 6 p.m.
• 40:57
Speaker 2: news time last night, thereabouts, WSAC television first out that
• 41:02
Speaker 2: the owners of the mall currently, the whole group, say
• 41:07
Speaker 2: that they will close the mall at some point in 2027,
• 41:11
Speaker 2: the interior stores, probably late spring or early summer of
• 41:16
Speaker 2: next year. Now, Chili's and Outback are would not be
• 41:20
Speaker 2: affected since, of course, they have street access. Now, according
• 41:26
Speaker 2: to reporting from WSAZ television, the whole group, this is
• 41:29
Speaker 2: what they said, had no interested investors, no offers, and
• 41:34
Speaker 2: no developers at this time. Now, again, this is according
• 41:38
Speaker 2: to the whole group, which I'm going to be honest
• 41:40
Speaker 2: with you, I would take with the biggest grain of
• 41:42
Speaker 2: salt available since they've not exactly been as upfront, in
• 41:47
Speaker 2: my opinion, my opinion only, of what they could have
• 41:50
Speaker 2: been on anything, including the real reasons that they buy
• 41:55
Speaker 2: these properties in the first place. So I'll say it.
• 41:58
Speaker 2: I'm calling BS. Now, not on the WSCZ reporting. I
• 42:02
Speaker 2: don't mean that. I want to be clear on that.
• 42:03
Speaker 2: But on the whole group statement therein, there was some talk,
• 42:09
Speaker 2: if you recall. Mayor talked about it. Other people talked
• 42:11
Speaker 2: about it, about possibly getting the whole group to then
• 42:16
Speaker 2: basically donate property the town center property back to the city.
• 42:22
Speaker 2: That apparently is not going to be happening. So let's
• 42:28
Speaker 2: cut to the chase here. And the following statements and
• 42:32
Speaker 2: opinions are mine and mine only. The days of the
• 42:37
Speaker 2: town center being the town center that we all knew
• 42:40
Speaker 2: and loved in 1989 are over and done with. They're never, ever,
• 42:45
Speaker 2: ever going to return. And sorry, but that one story
• 42:49
Speaker 2: you want, that Trader Joe's, that Whole Foods, that Dave
• 42:54
Speaker 2: and Buster's, et cetera, ain't saving the town center, period.
• 43:00
Speaker 2: So you can get off, maybe get off Facebook and
• 43:04
Speaker 2: talk to real world business people and retailers, and they
• 43:09
Speaker 2: will tell you that. And look, from day one, When
• 43:15
Speaker 2: the problems started, I was under the belief, and still am,
• 43:22
Speaker 2: that a multi-use facility is the way to go. I
• 43:28
Speaker 2: am still a big supporter of the Sports Center. I
• 43:33
Speaker 2: don't know if, when, what it's going to be, but
• 43:37
Speaker 2: I'm still a big supporter of that. High-end office spaces,
• 43:42
Speaker 2: some retail spaces. some residential, some limited retail, restaurant or two.
• 43:49
Speaker 2: But the days of the 1989 town center are over.
• 43:54
Speaker 2: And the sooner I think we realize that, the better.
• 43:57
Speaker 2: And for people that say, well, and look, I've been
• 43:59
Speaker 2: one of them. My wife and I, what, three weeks ago,
• 44:03
Speaker 2: we're at the Huntington Mall, Saturday afternoon, bustling. I mean,
• 44:07
Speaker 2: it was. However, it's apples to oranges, man. Because if
• 44:12
Speaker 2: you look at the Huntington Mall, you look at the
• 44:15
Speaker 2: Ashland Town Center. I was there for probably three or
• 44:17
Speaker 2: four months ago. Both doing great, both on Saturday afternoon.
• 44:22
Speaker 2: But the big difference is, especially with the Huntington Mall,
• 44:25
Speaker 2: look at what's around it. The Huntington Mall was on
• 44:28
Speaker 2: its last legs 15, 20 years ago. And then maybe
• 44:33
Speaker 2: a little bit longer. But then suddenly, when you saw
• 44:36
Speaker 2: all this stuff from Tanyard Station and all these other
• 44:39
Speaker 2: coals and all the other things that aren't technically on
• 44:41
Speaker 2: mall property but are around it, it's a driver to
• 44:46
Speaker 2: the mall. The town center doesn't have that. And there's
• 44:50
Speaker 2: no way to even do that. And I'm sorry, everybody's
• 44:55
Speaker 2: entitled to their opinion. I just happen to be the
• 44:57
Speaker 2: guy with the microphone, all right? But for people to
• 45:00
Speaker 2: come out and say, well, if we put this store in,
• 45:03
Speaker 2: this is going to be the one that's going to sit. No,
• 45:05
Speaker 2: it's not. It's not. The best use, in my opinion,
• 45:09
Speaker 2: is somebody who does not live in Charleston, but is
• 45:11
Speaker 2: here at least six days a week, sometimes seven, and
• 45:15
Speaker 2: works in downtown Charleston. The best use of that is
• 45:17
Speaker 2: going to be some sort of a multi-use facility where
• 45:20
Speaker 2: a little bit of everything is involved in that. And
• 45:22
Speaker 2: that has been done. That has been done in other cities.
• 45:25
Speaker 2: When you take a mall in an area like that,
• 45:27
Speaker 2: and you turn it into several things. We have a
• 45:31
Speaker 2: housing crisis in West Virginia. I mean, here in the
• 45:34
Speaker 2: Kanawha Valley, we have a housing crisis. We don't have
• 45:36
Speaker 2: enough housing. You put something like that in. I mean,
• 45:41
  Speaker 2: people say, well, nobody can afford $ 1, 200, $ 1, 500, $ 2, 000 a
• 45:42
Speaker 2: month rent. Well, over in Putnam County, there's a waiting
• 45:47
  Speaker 2: list for $ 2, 000 a month properties.
• 45:49
  Speaker 9: All right?
• 45:49
  Speaker 2: I'm just telling you. I'm just telling you. That's what's
• 45:53
Speaker 2: got to go there. Now, it could be Sports facility,
• 45:56
Speaker 2: if that happens, I'm 100% on board with that. It
• 45:59
Speaker 2: could be any number of things. You want to have
• 46:01
Speaker 2: something for people to do when they come in for
• 46:03
Speaker 2: all these tournaments, some sort of an athletic complex with
• 46:06
Speaker 2: these things that they have in other cities. Okay, fine.
• 46:09
Speaker 2: But if you think it's going to be, if you
• 46:11
Speaker 2: think the world's largest Spencer's is going to save the
• 46:15
Speaker 2: town center, you got another thing coming. 9.53, The Dave

Speaker 2: what's the realistic outcome for the town center? No way
• 49:28
Speaker 2: a renovation for a mixed use will be less expensive
