- 0:07Speaker 2: What's up everybody?
- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to move the six DJ and Bucky back with you.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Buck? How heck are you doing?
- 0:12Speaker 3: Man?
- 0:13Speaker 2: You have good Christmas? Nice little time with the Yeah,
- 0:16Speaker 2: look yeah it was great man.
- 0:18Speaker 3: The Colladay is always a good time to reminisce, to
- 0:21Speaker 3: give gratitude and his press thanks and have everyone around.
- 0:23Speaker 2: It's a great, great time. Yeah.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I was thinking about you because my present the the
- 0:28Speaker 1: you know, we kind of as you get older, like
- 0:30Speaker 1: you don't really need much. So my present that I
- 0:33Speaker 1: got this year was a gift card to Ruth Chris,
- 0:35Speaker 1: and I thought, oh, this is Bucky's dream, this is
- 0:37Speaker 1: Bucky's dream Christmas right here. So you know, Bucky, you
- 0:40Speaker 1: go ready post up. He's good to go.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you like when you go to the Combine like
- 0:47Speaker 2: that's that's it.
- 0:50Speaker 1: If you ever want, if you're ever looking for an
- 0:52Speaker 1: encounter with Bucky Brooks, you need an autograph, a picture.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Maybe you got some old Bill's merch you want to
- 0:56Speaker 1: get autographed, Uh, Indianapolis Combine, go to Ruth Chris. You'll
- 1:00Speaker 1: find Bucky posts it up there. It's a very good
- 1:02Speaker 1: chance you'll be able to reel that in. All right, Buck,
- 1:05Speaker 1: let's get to what happened last night. It's signed for
- 1:06Speaker 1: the Monday night recap. We're gonna get into a bunch
- 1:08Speaker 1: of these games. Where we got to start, first of all,
- 1:10Speaker 1: with the last one of the week, which was the
- 1:13Speaker 1: to me, the headliner. You can talk about the Chiefs
- 1:15Speaker 1: and their collapse, that's a storyline for sure, but to me,
- 1:19Speaker 1: the story of the weekend was the Ravens bullying the
- 1:22Speaker 1: bully going into San Francisco and just beating the stuffing
- 1:25Speaker 1: out of the forty nine ers.
- 1:27Speaker 3: So here, here's the thing about the Baltimore Ravens Sanrancisco
- 1:30Speaker 3: forty nine as matchup. It was hailed as the super
- 1:32Speaker 3: Bowl preview, and if it very well may be a
- 1:36Speaker 3: preview to what we see in the Super Bowl in
- 1:38Speaker 3: the middle of February. But you know, I think the
- 1:41Speaker 3: narrative coming in because San Francisco had kind of bullied
- 1:44Speaker 3: so many different teams, it was almost as if we
- 1:47Speaker 3: forgot that Baltimore has what two three decades of a
- 1:52Speaker 3: bully ball reputation, that this is what they need to
- 1:56Speaker 3: change and this is how they've always.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Won their big games.
- 1:59Speaker 3: And look, I made the mistake because I fully expected
- 2:01Speaker 3: the Niners to handle the Ravens. I thought they had
- 2:05Speaker 3: a more complete team in terms of like all facets
- 2:08Speaker 3: of the team functioning, but that reputation and that mindset,
- 2:13Speaker 3: like when you kind of challenge Baltimore, they're they're like
- 2:16Speaker 3: three types of guys, right. They're guys that rumped from
- 2:19Speaker 3: the fight, They're guys who reluctantly fight, and then they're
- 2:22Speaker 3: guys that run to the fight. The Baltimore Ravens are
- 2:25Speaker 3: the guys that run to the fight. So they embraced
- 2:28Speaker 3: this kind of encounter. They embraced taking on the forty
- 2:31Speaker 3: nine ers in their environment. They embrace playing a very
- 2:34Speaker 3: physical style of football. And to me, I was surprised
- 2:37Speaker 3: because I felt like the Niners back down. Yeah, the
- 2:40Speaker 3: interceptions in the turnovers and all that played apart, but
- 2:44Speaker 3: I felt like the Niners have always gone forward against
- 2:47Speaker 3: so many teams, kind of imposed their will on opponents.
- 2:50Speaker 2: But I didn't see the same vigor.
- 2:52Speaker 3: I didn't see the same edginess against the Baltimore Ravens,
- 2:55Speaker 3: because maybe they saw a team that would punch back
- 2:58Speaker 3: unlike some of the other teams they face along the way.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll tell you.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I don't know if you saw the comments after the
- 3:04Speaker 1: game from Patrick Queen. I don't know, Drew, do we
- 3:06Speaker 1: have that we have that audio on that.
- 3:08Speaker 4: You play a brand of football and people don't want
- 3:10Speaker 4: to play. Everybody want to be out here Q playing
- 3:12Speaker 4: basketball on grads and stuff. I mean, we ain't with
- 3:14Speaker 4: all that, so you could do all that stuff. You
- 3:15Speaker 4: just gonna get in the mouth every play. Honestly, you know,
- 3:18Speaker 4: get care of this by all the prettiest stuff you do,
- 3:20Speaker 4: gammixed stuff is oute. We still have had a line
- 3:22Speaker 4: of play football. You still going to get touch. So
- 3:24Speaker 4: that's our mindset. That's how we want to come out
- 3:26Speaker 4: and just hit people in the mouth.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yeah, you still got to get touched us. That's pretty
- 3:32Speaker 1: app description right there. I mean I wish I wish
- 3:34Speaker 1: you could bottle that up, buck and share it with
- 3:36Speaker 1: your high school team. I wish college coaches listened to this.
- 3:39Speaker 1: That's the message, like, Hey, the whole world, you know,
- 3:41Speaker 1: from shoot from high school to college in the NFL
- 3:44Speaker 1: has gone to it's a space and speed game. Right,
- 3:46Speaker 1: Let's get out in space, let's get to our speed,
- 3:48Speaker 1: and let's let them go basketball and grass, whatever you
- 3:50Speaker 1: want to call it, and Baltimore said, yeah, it's still
- 3:52Speaker 1: there's a time and place where you got to see me.
- 3:55Speaker 1: You know, there's gonna be physical confrontation. There's going to
- 3:57Speaker 1: be physical battles, and as you met, they don't shy
- 4:01Speaker 1: away from that.
- 4:01Speaker 2: They never have.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And I thought they were uniquely positioned to match up
- 4:06Speaker 1: with this forty nine er team.
- 4:07Speaker 2: And going back to the game, you.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Could see it, Buck, You saw a lot of a
- 4:11Speaker 1: lot of three deep stuff, three deep, four under, and
- 4:14Speaker 1: then the middle of the field is closed and the
- 4:17Speaker 1: forty nine ers live in the middle of the field.
- 4:19Speaker 1: They live in the middle of the field with tight ends.
- 4:20Speaker 1: They live in the middle of the field with their receivers.
- 4:22Speaker 1: They like to get the ball to their backs. That's
- 4:25Speaker 1: their their space. Now, brock Purty actually made some nice
- 4:27Speaker 1: throws out to the perimeter, some of the better throws
- 4:29Speaker 1: I've seen him make this year on the outside. Trying
- 4:32Speaker 1: to adjust to that a little bit. They hit Kittle
- 4:34Speaker 1: a couple times early and then after that they just
- 4:37Speaker 1: kind of Baltimore just shut it down. And then as
- 4:40Speaker 1: we always talk about on here, you love to say it,
- 4:42Speaker 1: tips and overthrows will get you, and that was a
- 4:45Speaker 1: big factor in brock Purty's four interceptions. I think both
- 4:49Speaker 1: of these things can be true. And social media, it's
- 4:52Speaker 1: hard to convey this message. You're not going to get
- 4:53Speaker 1: it out in the character limitation there. But I still
- 4:57Speaker 1: believe brock Purty should still be alive for the MVP.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Everybody else has kind of buried him after this game.
- 5:02Speaker 1: He had a bad game. He's still up there statistically
- 5:04Speaker 1: with just about everybody. I think he's a really, really
- 5:07Speaker 1: good fit in this system. He's played at a really
- 5:10Speaker 1: high level. That can be true. The other thing they
- 5:12Speaker 1: can be true is this team is not built to
- 5:14Speaker 1: come from behind because brock Purty does not have the
- 5:16Speaker 1: arm to be able to beat defenses when everybody in
- 5:20Speaker 1: the stadium knows you're going to throw the ball. That's
- 5:22Speaker 1: the whole thing about the Shanahan system. Everything looks the
- 5:24Speaker 1: same you come off that he can diagnose. He gets
- 5:27Speaker 1: to his reads quickly, He gets the ball out there
- 5:29Speaker 1: with anticipation and accuracy when there's no threat of the run,
- 5:32Speaker 1: When they don't honor your run fakes, the ball is
- 5:34Speaker 1: going to have to beat the fenders. And I don't know,
- 5:37Speaker 1: he's never had that big arm, didn't have that big
- 5:39Speaker 1: arm coming out, and I tweeted out, I don't know
- 5:41Speaker 1: what you thought of it. My thing was when you
- 5:43Speaker 1: saw Sam Donald go in that game, and I watched
- 5:45Speaker 1: the watched it back this morning on tape. That's a
- 5:48Speaker 1: different level. There's a reason why one guy was the
- 5:50Speaker 1: third pick and one guy was mister irrelevant, not saying that.
- 5:53Speaker 1: You know, Brock's been a much better quarterback, much much
- 5:56Speaker 1: better quarterback than Sam Donald, but when you're trailing in
- 5:58Speaker 1: a game where you have to throw the football, Sam
- 6:01Speaker 1: Garnold has his arm strength to be able to do that,
- 6:03Speaker 1: whereas Brock Purty. I think that's a question mark that's
- 6:05Speaker 1: going to hang out there.
- 6:06Speaker 3: So DJ there's this huge debate right it exists on
- 6:10Speaker 3: the Twitter verse. It started when Cam Newton talked about it.
- 6:12Speaker 3: We've done our own version where we talked about trucks
- 6:16Speaker 3: and trailers. Cam Newton used game managers versus game changers,
- 6:19Speaker 3: and everyone was up at arms. But what it is
- 6:22Speaker 3: is a very nuanced conversation is about the levels of
- 6:25Speaker 3: talent that play the position, and there's some guys that
- 6:28Speaker 3: have a different level of talent that makes them uniquely
- 6:32Speaker 3: positioned to change the game based on not only what
- 6:35Speaker 3: they can do inside the structure of the offense, but
- 6:38Speaker 3: what they also can add. Sometimes that's athleticism. Sometimes that's
- 6:42Speaker 3: arm talent, where you can change arm angle you have
- 6:46Speaker 3: special talent like Matthew Stafford would fall in that category
- 6:49Speaker 3: in terms of his arm ability. His arm talent is
- 6:53Speaker 3: game changing other guys, everything has.
- 6:55Speaker 2: To be right. The way you manage them, you operate
- 6:58Speaker 2: the team.
- 6:58Speaker 3: The way that you understand how to distributed and get
- 7:00Speaker 3: the ball to the playmakers is that it's almost like
- 7:03Speaker 3: having two different types of point guards, right, the guy
- 7:06Speaker 3: who is the highest cist guy versus the scoring guard.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Both are effective, both are functional, but there's a cap
- 7:12Speaker 3: on each of them. And so when we talk about
- 7:14Speaker 3: Rock Purty in comparison to Lamar Jackson in this game,
- 7:17Speaker 3: you can see the ceiling on brock Purty when the
- 7:20Speaker 3: team got behind and they had to play a traditional
- 7:22Speaker 3: drop back style of the ball. Rock Purty doesn't have
- 7:26Speaker 3: like the unique talents to the n say hey, I'm
- 7:29Speaker 3: just going to will it with my arm talent, whereas
- 7:31Speaker 3: a guy like Lamar Jackson it may be utilized his athleticism,
- 7:35Speaker 3: his feet, his playmaking ability, his ability to extend the play,
- 7:40Speaker 3: all of those things, much like Pat Mahomes and Josh
- 7:42Speaker 3: Allen are able to do in their own unique ways.
- 7:44Speaker 3: And so it's not being disrespectful to Brock or any
- 7:47Speaker 3: of the other guys that fall into those categories. But
- 7:50Speaker 3: it's a nuanced discussion talking about just the differences between
- 7:54Speaker 3: the levels of elite in this league.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's again, I think it's a complex, complicated conversation.
- 8:01Speaker 2: It's not all or nothing.
- 8:03Speaker 1: It's not Brock Purty's the best.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Brock Party is the worst.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Rock Purty is an MVP caliber quarterback, and I do
- 8:08Speaker 1: think if they win their last couple of games in
- 8:10Speaker 1: Baltimore were to slip up, I think he's he's he's
- 8:13Speaker 1: got a right to be in that discussion. His stats
- 8:15Speaker 1: are going to be there. He's a perfect fit. It
- 8:17Speaker 1: reminds me again, kind of looking at that Drew Brees
- 8:19Speaker 1: set up when Drew Brees was rolling. That's that's the
- 8:22Speaker 1: way Brock Purty's playing the game like Drew Brees. Drew
- 8:24Speaker 1: Brees is not going to, you know, throw the ball
- 8:26Speaker 1: through a wall. But his superpower was being able to
- 8:28Speaker 1: see things, diagnose things, and get the ball where it
- 8:31Speaker 1: needs to be, and that's that's what brock Purty has done.
- 8:33Speaker 1: So anyways, it's a it's an interesting discussion Lamar. On
- 8:36Speaker 1: the other hand, the stats don't, you know, blow you away, Buck,
- 8:40Speaker 1: But when you're watching it, it's just at some point
- 8:44Speaker 1: in time, it's just kind of like the eyeball test
- 8:45Speaker 1: of my eyes tell me that he's different than everybody
- 8:48Speaker 1: else out on the field, and he makes this whole
- 8:50Speaker 1: thing work.
- 8:52Speaker 3: So here's the thing about Lamar Jackson. Here's maybe why
- 8:55Speaker 3: I slept on the Baltimore Ravens. Coming on the heels
- 8:57Speaker 3: of watching the Ravens up close and personal, watching their offense,
- 9:01Speaker 3: it kind of reminds me a bit like playing the
- 9:03Speaker 3: video game. Right, So when you're playing the video game
- 9:05Speaker 3: and you have the quarterback and your quarterback is faster
- 9:07Speaker 3: than everybody else, sometimes you just kind of move around
- 9:11Speaker 3: and just wait for your guys to uncover, or you
- 9:13Speaker 3: just take off and run. I feel like for Baltimore,
- 9:16Speaker 3: that's kind of like what they have in their pocket.
- 9:18Speaker 3: They're not using Lamar Jackson like he was used previously.
- 9:21Speaker 3: They do on occasion, Yeah, they'll pull the zone raad
- 9:23Speaker 3: to do some design quarterback runs, but a lot of
- 9:25Speaker 3: his runs now are coming on scramble plays. And what
- 9:29Speaker 3: that does is that puts a different pressure on the
- 9:32Speaker 3: defense because now you're scared to play man and man
- 9:34Speaker 3: because if he takes off, you're talking about.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Explosive chunk plays on the ground.
- 9:38Speaker 3: If you play zone, that's fine, But now when he
- 9:41Speaker 3: moves around, how discipline can you be?
- 9:43Speaker 2: The plaster the wide receivers on the perimeter.
- 9:46Speaker 3: And in a way, he is doing what Pat Mahomes
- 9:49Speaker 3: has done the last few years in terms of buying time,
- 9:53Speaker 3: But he's doing it, I would say, as a better athlete.
- 9:56Speaker 3: And so it now has made the Ravens offense dangerous
- 10:00Speaker 3: and maybe more difficult to find, even though I would
- 10:02Speaker 3: say schinmatically it's still very simple.
- 10:05Speaker 2: But his ability to.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Pick up yardage as a drop back passer as opposed
- 10:11Speaker 3: to the primary runner changes the equation. It really flips
- 10:15Speaker 3: the script for how defensive coordinators have to defend this offense.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and they have a lot of different weapons, and
- 10:19Speaker 1: they've never had this many weapons. And even when you
- 10:23Speaker 1: have the injury to Mark Andrews that they've done a
- 10:25Speaker 1: nice job of spreading that ball around. It's the best
- 10:27Speaker 1: receiving corps I think that they've had for sure since
- 10:29Speaker 1: Lamar's been there, might be the best receiving corps they've
- 10:31Speaker 1: ever had there, So a lot of talent around him.
- 10:34Speaker 1: One thing about the Ravens, They've won seven games by
- 10:36Speaker 1: fourteen plus points this year, so they're not just winning
- 10:39Speaker 1: their hammering teams and some good teams along the way.
- 10:43Speaker 1: All right, let's stay to a team that is very
- 10:46Speaker 1: much in that discussion as the best team in football.
- 10:48Speaker 1: The Ravens might have staked their claim, but the team
- 10:50Speaker 1: they're going to see this next week at home, that's
- 10:53Speaker 1: the discussion, and that's the Miami Dolphins. Coming off a
- 10:56Speaker 1: big win over the Dallas Cowboys, got to have a game,
- 10:59Speaker 1: especially when you look at the schedule. They go to
- 11:01Speaker 1: Baltimore next and they finish up the season against Buffalo,
- 11:04Speaker 1: so it is a very very tough road. The playoffs
- 11:06Speaker 1: have already started for Miami, and they got a big
- 11:08Speaker 1: one here against the Cowboys with that win.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Yeah, no, there was a big win.
- 11:12Speaker 3: It was a big win because these are two teams
- 11:14Speaker 3: that we really wondered who could kind of change their
- 11:17Speaker 3: style to kind of get ready to play for these
- 11:20Speaker 3: pressure rized environments that they're gonna have to face coming
- 11:23Speaker 3: down the stretch, and so the Miami Dolphins were able
- 11:25Speaker 3: to kind of stay within themselves. Look, they're cute and creative,
- 11:28Speaker 3: they do all this stuff, but they can run the football.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And then defensively, they're becoming a much better team on defense,
- 11:33Speaker 3: but offenously, it's the speed and explosiveness the weapons that
- 11:36Speaker 3: they have on the outside, starting with Tyreek Hill and
- 11:39Speaker 3: then going to Jalen Waddle and then all the speed
- 11:41Speaker 3: that they have in the backfield. They can produce explosive
- 11:45Speaker 3: plays in a variety of ways. And you saw down
- 11:47Speaker 3: the stretch when they were down they had to have
- 11:48Speaker 3: a two minute drive. It didn't mean that they had
- 11:50Speaker 3: to throw it over the top is throwing a little
- 11:52Speaker 3: quick pass out to Tyreek Hill. He makes two or
- 11:54Speaker 3: three guys move, and a five year pass goes to
- 11:57Speaker 3: fifteen to twenty yards in a hurry. That put tremendous
- 12:00Speaker 3: amount of pressure on the defense because your ability to
- 12:04Speaker 3: tackle in the space is going to be tested early
- 12:07Speaker 3: and often, and if you can't get those guys to
- 12:09Speaker 3: the ground, it makes for.
- 12:09Speaker 2: A long date.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah, they have five guys with a catch over eighteen
- 12:13Speaker 1: yards in this game, and when you watch it. One
- 12:15Speaker 1: of the things that I wrote down when I was
- 12:16Speaker 1: watching it this morning, the timing and the trust. You know,
- 12:21Speaker 1: it's hard to have one without the other. Right and
- 12:23Speaker 1: to a talk about Loa those bang eights that they're throwing,
- 12:26Speaker 1: which to me is hilarious when you watch them. Tyreek
- 12:29Speaker 1: Killbuck has to gear down like you want to hit
- 12:31Speaker 1: that thing. You think about I think about our colleague
- 12:33Speaker 1: Michael Irvin like kind of him and Troy Aikman made
- 12:36Speaker 1: that round famous with hitting that skinny post, that bang
- 12:39Speaker 1: eight where the back foot ball is gone. Tyreek has
- 12:42Speaker 1: to gear down off the line and kind of pace
- 12:44Speaker 1: himself because he's going to get to the top of
- 12:46Speaker 1: the route too fast. But their timing is beautiful to
- 12:50Speaker 1: a backfoot band ball's gone. You can't defend that. I
- 12:53Speaker 1: mean you can speak to it as somebody who's played
- 12:55Speaker 1: both positions corner and wide out. When you have that
- 12:57Speaker 1: type of timing and a perfect ball and you have
- 13:00Speaker 1: the speed and the explosiveness of somebody like Tyreek Hill,
- 13:03Speaker 1: what do you do? What are you gonna do on that?
- 13:04Speaker 1: And if they're not going to hit that, then they're
- 13:06Speaker 1: gonna end up. He's gonna push you, and he's gonna
- 13:08Speaker 1: curl up at about twenty yards after he's just poured
- 13:11Speaker 1: on the speed to run you out of your pedal.
- 13:14Speaker 1: It's just like, these completions are there anytime you want them.
- 13:16Speaker 1: And I watched this tape right after I watched the
- 13:19Speaker 1: Kansas City Chiefs tape, and that's another conversation we can
- 13:22Speaker 1: have later, but it was it was so drastic. The
- 13:25Speaker 1: difference between the offense is the space that the speed creates.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And it's not just him, it's waddle. Cedric Wilson did
- 13:31Speaker 1: a nice job in this game. Robbie Chosen got one
- 13:34Speaker 1: for nineteen yards as well. You feel, you feel the speed,
- 13:37Speaker 1: and when you combine the speed with the timing and
- 13:39Speaker 1: the accuracy, I know the Ravens said, you know, everybody
- 13:43Speaker 1: likes to play basketball and grass and we're gonna punch
- 13:44Speaker 1: you in the mouth that when they play at the
- 13:47Speaker 1: level that they played at when they needed it with Miami, again,
- 13:50Speaker 1: twenty two points didn't light up the scoreboard, but when
- 13:52Speaker 1: you need it, man, I'm looking forward to that matchup,
- 13:55Speaker 1: fast forward to next week.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Because the contract style will challenge the Baltimore Ravens in
- 14:02Speaker 3: a different way than the San Francisco forty nine ers did.
- 14:05Speaker 3: But what you talk about when it comes to Tyreek
- 14:07Speaker 3: Hill and two a tongue about Lowell and Jaylen Wallle
- 14:09Speaker 3: that bang gate. So you gave credit Detroit Aikman and
- 14:12Speaker 3: Michael Irvin. I'm gonna take it back to the team
- 14:15Speaker 3: that you currently were for, the Chargers. So I came
- 14:19Speaker 3: into the league. Charlie Joyner who played with the Air
- 14:21Speaker 3: coriol Charges with Dan Fouts. Don Coriele was the head coach.
- 14:26Speaker 3: He was my first position coach with the Buffalo Bills.
- 14:29Speaker 3: He openly discussed how he and Dan Fouts could throw
- 14:32Speaker 3: that route blindfolded. He talks about the timing of the
- 14:35Speaker 3: route makes it where it's unguardable. If you look at
- 14:38Speaker 3: the dimensions of the football field, he says, you line
- 14:41Speaker 3: up in the middle of the numbers, You run to
- 14:43Speaker 3: the bottom of the numbers, which is the side closest
- 14:46Speaker 3: to the sideline.
- 14:47Speaker 2: You hit that at.
- 14:48Speaker 3: About ten to twelve yards, and you make an angle
- 14:51Speaker 3: where you should catch that ball twenty one yards down
- 14:54Speaker 3: the field, one yard on top of the numbers, and
- 14:57Speaker 3: it is unstoppable. Depending on the leverage of the corner,
- 15:00Speaker 3: and the compliment to that is the speed out.
- 15:02Speaker 2: So the corner can never be right.
- 15:04Speaker 3: If you playing the band gate, they're gonna throw the
- 15:07Speaker 3: speed out on you all day. If you're hanging on
- 15:09Speaker 3: the speed out, they're gonna hit you with the band gate.
- 15:11Speaker 3: And what you're seeing because of Tyreek Hill's speed, people
- 15:14Speaker 3: are afraid to press them. They're playing off to a
- 15:17Speaker 3: tongue about lawa throws on time and on target, and
- 15:20Speaker 3: it really has made this route unstoppable for the Dolphins,
- 15:24Speaker 3: and the speed that they have overall has made this
- 15:27Speaker 3: offense one where you can have a distributing point guard
- 15:30Speaker 3: to a tongue about la play at a high level
- 15:32Speaker 3: because his job is to get the ball in the
- 15:34Speaker 3: hands of playmakers, and those playmakers let it work. So
- 15:37Speaker 3: when we talk about game managers and all those other things,
- 15:40Speaker 3: it's not necessarily about that. Is the weapons around you
- 15:44Speaker 3: allow you to elevate your game, and your job is
- 15:47Speaker 3: just to get the ball to the hands of the
- 15:48Speaker 3: playmakers and get out the way.
- 15:51Speaker 1: So I want to get to the Cowboys side of
- 15:53Speaker 1: this thing. You know it much has been said the
- 15:55Speaker 1: Cowboys aren't beating good teams. Right, they beat the Eagles
- 15:57Speaker 1: and outside of that, not much. I actually left feeling
- 16:00Speaker 1: okay about this. You know, again, this is kind of
- 16:03Speaker 1: a you know, we'll see what the seating looks like.
- 16:04Speaker 1: They're in the tournament, they're going to be in the playoffs.
- 16:07Speaker 1: This is a this is a this is an impressive
- 16:09Speaker 1: showing for me. You lose by two points. Dak played
- 16:12Speaker 1: a pretty clean game. Now they heated him up. They
- 16:13Speaker 1: got some pressure on a Bradley Chubb, and that defense
- 16:15Speaker 1: with Vic Fangio did some nice things. But Seedee Lamb
- 16:18Speaker 1: you see him on the highlights here, six for a
- 16:19Speaker 1: buck eighteen. You know, they didn't run the ball, maybe
- 16:23Speaker 1: quite as well as they would have liked to, but
- 16:24Speaker 1: I thought the defense hung in there as best they could. Again,
- 16:27Speaker 1: you hold the Dolphins of twenty two points. It was
- 16:29Speaker 1: a you know, it's it's it's a two point game
- 16:31Speaker 1: against a really, really good team on the road. I
- 16:34Speaker 1: left this game feeling fine about the Cowboys. I think
- 16:36Speaker 1: they're still a very dangerous team once you get in
- 16:39Speaker 1: the playoffs. It's just provided they don't play the Niners,
- 16:41Speaker 1: the one team they don't match up with.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:44Speaker 3: No, look, I think you should feel good about it because,
- 16:46Speaker 3: let's be honest, they had an opportunity. They were up
- 16:49Speaker 3: in the winning moments of the game. This is exactly
- 16:51Speaker 3: how Dallas probably wanted the game to play out. The
- 16:53Speaker 3: whole of the Miami Dolphins to twenty two points, that
- 16:55Speaker 3: is a win. This is a team that is capable
- 16:57Speaker 3: hanging at forty burgers on everybody. So if you're the
- 17:00Speaker 3: Dallas Cowboys, you feel good about certain parts of it.
- 17:03Speaker 3: But the running game, or the lack thereof, is a concern.
- 17:06Speaker 3: We talk about Tony. Tony Pola immediately talked about the
- 17:09Speaker 3: slow start to the season coming off of that leg
- 17:12Speaker 3: and those things. You have to be able to run
- 17:16Speaker 3: the football when you want to in the postseason, and
- 17:19Speaker 3: so the Cowboys have to find a way to work
- 17:21Speaker 3: on that over the next two weeks to get ready
- 17:22Speaker 3: for the tournament. They have to be able to run
- 17:24Speaker 3: the football so they can't become so they don't become
- 17:27Speaker 3: a one dimensional team in the postseason. Look, it's not
- 17:31Speaker 3: necessarily the rushing yards, it's the attempts because the attempts
- 17:34Speaker 3: to low you still to utilize play action, still control
- 17:37Speaker 3: the game and dictate the terms to the defense as
- 17:40Speaker 3: opposed to being in a one hundred percent drive back
- 17:42Speaker 3: game where now they can play pressure or coverage and
- 17:45Speaker 3: they dictate to the.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Offense, no doubt. Let's get to this next one here,
- 17:51Speaker 1: Lions Vikings, Lions win. They win the division for the
- 17:54Speaker 1: first time, what since ninety three, I think it was.
- 17:57Speaker 1: It's been a long time. You see it on the
- 17:58Speaker 1: screen right there in nineteen ninety three. A lot of
- 18:01Speaker 1: different ways they can go this. I would just say this,
- 18:04Speaker 1: you know, Jamior Gibbs has been awesome. A couple of
- 18:06Speaker 1: touchdowns in this game. Eighty yards rushing, twenty receiving. Kirby
- 18:10Speaker 1: Joseph had two picks this second year in a row.
- 18:12Speaker 1: He's a young player, is twenty three years old. Second
- 18:14Speaker 1: year in the league. He had four picks last year.
- 18:15Speaker 1: He's got four picks this year. Almarross Saint Brown goes
- 18:18Speaker 1: twelve for a bucko six. He just keeps doing his thing.
- 18:21Speaker 1: To me, when you're looking at who's going to get
- 18:23Speaker 1: hired in these coaching cycles, buck one of the things
- 18:27Speaker 1: you know, you can look at overall success of the
- 18:28Speaker 1: team or the yardage, all this kind of stuff that
- 18:30Speaker 1: you're having on either side of the ball and leadership
- 18:33Speaker 1: and hear all these things. To me, if you're hiring
- 18:35Speaker 1: a coach, find out who's playing young players and the
- 18:38Speaker 1: young players are playing well. And I'm not just talking
- 18:41Speaker 1: about first round picks. I'm talking about getting guys on
- 18:44Speaker 1: the field that are third, fourth, fifth round picks that
- 18:46Speaker 1: are productive because it tells me that you've got guys
- 18:50Speaker 1: that not only how to put a plan together, but
- 18:52Speaker 1: you got guys that know how to develop. That's like,
- 18:54Speaker 1: to me, that's the ace in the hole in this
- 18:56Speaker 1: league right now when you don't have as much time.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Who are the elite teacher in this game that can
- 19:01Speaker 1: take what you give them and make them better. And
- 19:03Speaker 1: to me, Dan Campbell and that staff, and we know
- 19:06Speaker 1: a bunch of those coaches on the offense and defensive
- 19:08Speaker 1: side of the ball. It's not just one of the
- 19:09Speaker 1: other both, but they should be candidates because they have
- 19:13Speaker 1: got young guys on the field and they're playing lights out.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Yeah, they'll I'm.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Gonna give a lot of credit to Dan Campbell and
- 19:19Speaker 3: that staff. That staff, there was a lot made of this.
- 19:23Speaker 3: That staff is loaded with a bunch of former players.
- 19:25Speaker 3: You think about Mark mnell and like Aaron le and
- 19:30Speaker 3: Aaron Glenn and so many other guys, Hank Freeley and
- 19:33Speaker 3: so many other guys that are working with them. So
- 19:35Speaker 3: those young guys done a really good job of helping
- 19:37Speaker 3: those guys grow from newbies to learning how to play
- 19:40Speaker 3: and crafting it. But DJ, I think it even goes
- 19:43Speaker 3: beyond that. I think if you're thinking about Ben Johson
- 19:45Speaker 3: or one of the other guys on the staff, I
- 19:47Speaker 3: think you need to dig into their personel department and
- 19:49Speaker 3: talk to Ray Agnew and some of those other guys.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Because the pairing of the general manager and the coach,
- 19:55Speaker 3: we're now seeing how important it is for everyone to
- 19:57Speaker 3: be on the same page. Brad Holmes has brought up
- 20:00Speaker 3: bunch of like draft picks to the table. Dan Campbell
- 20:04Speaker 3: has been willing to take those young picks and put
- 20:06Speaker 3: them on the field, and that stuff has worked. And
- 20:09Speaker 3: we've talked about the need to have the synergy between
- 20:12Speaker 3: the front office and the coaching staff. If you're going
- 20:15Speaker 3: to be a draft and developed team, a draft and
- 20:17Speaker 3: developed franchise, everybody has to be on the same page.
- 20:21Speaker 3: And when I look at the Detroit Lions and each
- 20:23Speaker 3: week we talk about the rookie output score and how
- 20:26Speaker 3: many of those times those guys have been on the list,
- 20:29Speaker 3: and not just.
- 20:29Speaker 2: The first rounders.
- 20:30Speaker 3: It is a franchise philosophy that we're gonna play the
- 20:35Speaker 3: young players and everyone is on board.
- 20:37Speaker 2: And the Detroit Lions have been rewarded for that.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and on Almon Ross, Saint brown Buck and I
- 20:45Speaker 1: also look at that man, what makes him? What makes
- 20:47Speaker 1: him so good? So I went through and watched a
- 20:48Speaker 1: bunch of him this morning. A couple of things. You know,
- 20:51Speaker 1: we talked about the strength, we talk about the toughness,
- 20:54Speaker 1: you know, what he can do after the catch, but
- 20:57Speaker 1: the spatial awareness that he has working in zone zones,
- 21:00Speaker 1: and it sounds it's kind of one of those things
- 21:03Speaker 1: you see it. It's harder to explain. But if you
- 21:05Speaker 1: watch Cooper Cup and you're gonna say, what makes Cooper
- 21:07Speaker 1: Cup great? And you can watch him putting guys in
- 21:09Speaker 1: a blender when they're in man coverage. To me, the
- 21:11Speaker 1: superpower is just that feel and understanding of making yourself
- 21:15Speaker 1: big and being a nice target to your quarterback. And
- 21:18Speaker 1: it's not like it's it's hard. It's hard to explain it.
- 21:22Speaker 1: But when you have a defender here and a defender there,
- 21:24Speaker 1: instead of being at the sixty to forty line, like
- 21:26Speaker 1: I'm sixty percent away from this defender, I'm forty percent
- 21:29Speaker 1: closer to this one, Like.
- 21:30Speaker 2: That would be great.
- 21:31Speaker 1: He is fifty to fifty every single time, like he
- 21:34Speaker 1: knows how to create the most space possible between defenders.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And that's it's like a basketball thing, you know. I
- 21:39Speaker 1: don't know where the background is there, where that comes from,
- 21:42Speaker 1: but he has an unbelievable feel working in those zones.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Okay, DJ, We've talked about this, and we've talked about
- 21:47Speaker 3: building teams, and I think you talked about when you
- 21:49Speaker 3: work for the Ravens. You guys talked about smart tough,
- 21:52Speaker 3: talk about instincts of instincts in those things. I think
- 21:56Speaker 3: sometimes intelligence football intelligence and what I would call booksmarts.
- 22:01Speaker 3: I think they both are underrated. And I think when
- 22:04Speaker 3: you have smart guys, smart guys have a tendency to
- 22:06Speaker 3: be able to figure it out. And I think for
- 22:08Speaker 3: Amara Ras Saint Brown, if you understand the background and
- 22:10Speaker 3: the pedigree and having to learn all the different languages
- 22:13Speaker 3: and how mom and dad really pushed all of the
- 22:16Speaker 3: same brothers to learn at a high level, I am
- 22:20Speaker 3: not surprised that he understands how to figure it out,
- 22:23Speaker 3: because smart guys can make the coach right. When the
- 22:26Speaker 3: coach is wrong, he may call the wrong play, but
- 22:28Speaker 3: smart guys understand how to figure it out. So when
- 22:30Speaker 3: you talk about the awareness DJ, some of that awareness
- 22:33Speaker 3: is the na field, but a lot of that awareness
- 22:36Speaker 3: comes from studying and understand where the holes are going
- 22:39Speaker 3: to be, being able to anticipate where the areas will be.
- 22:42Speaker 3: So now you're on the same page with the quarterback
- 22:45Speaker 3: and Jery Goff has a comfort level and knowing a
- 22:48Speaker 3: I can trust that this guy's going to be at
- 22:50Speaker 3: the right spot even if we get it wrong initially,
- 22:53Speaker 3: he'll help me out. That trust allows golf to keep
- 22:57Speaker 3: coming to him over and over again in the clutch.
- 22:59Speaker 3: So we can talk about toughness and physicality and all
- 23:03Speaker 3: those things effort, but man intelligence is an underrated aspect
- 23:07Speaker 3: to having a lot of success in the league. And
- 23:09Speaker 3: I think amara Ron Saint Brown has that intelligence that
- 23:11Speaker 3: you're looking for football intelligence as well as booksmortes.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a great point, bringing up all the languages
- 23:19Speaker 1: that he learned too. I remember learning about that through
- 23:21Speaker 1: the process and when he was going through the recruiting thing.
- 23:23Speaker 1: His brother obviously play at standfard. It is a smart
- 23:24Speaker 1: smart family is a smart dude, and it shows up
- 23:27Speaker 1: on the grass for sure. All Right, they're gonna take
- 23:30Speaker 1: a quick break. When we come back, we're going to
- 23:32Speaker 1: jump into some more of these games. It was a
- 23:33Speaker 1: great weekend of football. We'll get to some more of
- 23:36Speaker 1: those ball games right after this.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Back here with.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Bucky and Buck, we'll go through some more of these games,
- 23:45Speaker 1: including a couple that we were at. We start here
- 23:48Speaker 1: with the one eye witnessed on Saturday.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Peacock.
- 23:51Speaker 1: By the way, how was that experience? Did you get
- 23:52Speaker 1: a chance to pull up the Peacock app and check
- 23:54Speaker 1: that thing out book?
- 23:56Speaker 2: I did get a chance to see a little bit
- 23:58Speaker 2: of the game. I was nice. You guys jumped out,
- 24:00Speaker 2: the Charges jumped out. Yeah, it was different. It's different.
- 24:02Speaker 3: It's a different experience. It's it's so many different ways
- 24:04Speaker 3: to consume football these days. You're just trying to get
- 24:06Speaker 3: your arms around.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a game. It was actually a fun
- 24:10Speaker 1: game to call. After the week before where the Raiders
- 24:13Speaker 1: ran the Chargers out of the gym, this was a
- 24:15Speaker 1: competitive game. Gift Smith taken over as the interim head coach.
- 24:19Speaker 1: I thought he had these guys ready to go. They
- 24:20Speaker 1: played hard, eastern stick actually for the second week in
- 24:23Speaker 1: a row, made some nice throws, use his legs in
- 24:25Speaker 1: this one, ran the ball pretty well. It was enough
- 24:28Speaker 1: to show that I think he's a competent, capable backup quarterback.
- 24:31Speaker 1: So happy for him on the Chargers side of things.
- 24:33Speaker 1: But this is about the Bills. They're nine and six now,
- 24:35Speaker 1: this is a team that now is in the tournament.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Just just need to handle their business coming down the stretch.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Josh Allen didn't have a super you know, blow you
- 24:44Speaker 1: away game, but Buck the explosive plays were still there,
- 24:47Speaker 1: and he found him through Gabe Davis and this one
- 24:49Speaker 1: who had been kind of missing in action, he had
- 24:51Speaker 1: him on a go ball. He extended plays, made things happen.
- 24:55Speaker 1: I think Joe Brady's done a nice job with this
- 24:57Speaker 1: offense since he's taken over. And one of the things
- 24:59Speaker 1: I was thinking of is, okay, Josh. Josh has got
- 25:02Speaker 1: a zillion touchdowns, you know, passing and rushing. He had
- 25:05Speaker 1: two rushing touchdowns in this one as well as well
- 25:07Speaker 1: as a passing touch and I think it's like an
- 25:09Speaker 1: eleventh game where he's had at least a one rushing
- 25:11Speaker 1: one passing touchdown, which is an NFL record. But when
- 25:14Speaker 1: we think about him getting himself in trouble with turnovers, right,
- 25:17Speaker 1: that's been the issue. So their vertical game, their vertical
- 25:21Speaker 1: pass game has been on the outside, take your shots
- 25:23Speaker 1: on go balls, double moves. Let him try and be
- 25:26Speaker 1: aggressive on the outside because there's no trouble out there.
- 25:29Speaker 1: And then outside of that, you know, hey, use your legs,
- 25:31Speaker 1: make some things happen. Try and get the run game
- 25:33Speaker 1: going a little bit. James Cook did fumbled twice in
- 25:35Speaker 1: this one. That's something he's going to have to clean up.
- 25:38Speaker 1: But I think they found a way to still be dynamic,
- 25:40Speaker 1: explosive without maybe putting the ball in as much risk.
- 25:44Speaker 1: He did have the one pick, but that, to me,
- 25:46Speaker 1: I think is an adjustment from Joe Brady instead of
- 25:48Speaker 1: trying to jam everything into tight windows into the middle
- 25:51Speaker 1: of the field.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Yeah, you have to know you personnel, and I think
- 25:55Speaker 3: knowing the personnel is knowing what the quarterback does really
- 25:57Speaker 3: really well. And what Josh Allen always has is his
- 26:01Speaker 3: unique superpower is his ability to not only run it.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Not only is superior arm talent, but his ability to
- 26:08Speaker 3: buy time and improvise and do those things. So it's
- 26:11Speaker 3: funny you talked about the one on one coverage on
- 26:13Speaker 3: the outside taking the goal balls, but DJ, how about
- 26:16Speaker 3: when he scrambles and takes the deep shot down the boundary.
- 26:20Speaker 3: His ability to stress the defense as a dual threat playmaker.
- 26:26Speaker 3: And so when we talk about game changers, like, I'm
- 26:28Speaker 3: not saying that every game changer has to have athleticism,
- 26:31Speaker 3: but man, in today's game, when your quarterback is athletic
- 26:34Speaker 3: and can extend plays and buy time, it allows you
- 26:37Speaker 3: to put so much stress on the defense horizontally and
- 26:41Speaker 3: vertically because man, he makes them have to hang with
- 26:43Speaker 3: the people. You don't know if I stick with my man,
- 26:45Speaker 3: do I go chase the quarterback? And then as soon
- 26:47Speaker 3: as I just kind of peek at him, he'll throw
- 26:49Speaker 3: it right over my head. And that's what Josh Allen
- 26:51Speaker 3: has been able to do. And in a league where
- 26:54Speaker 3: explosive plays typically leads to points, you have to be
- 26:58Speaker 3: able to generate those chunks plays and Josh Allen's improvisational
- 27:03Speaker 3: skills allows the Buffalo Bills to do it. And lastly,
- 27:06Speaker 3: this is what we say Josh Allen didn't played great
- 27:08Speaker 3: most of the game. But guess what, man, when he
- 27:10Speaker 3: has to take it over, he has the ability to say,
- 27:13Speaker 3: you know what, guys, I got this, I'll put it
- 27:15Speaker 3: on my back and I'll figure it out.
- 27:17Speaker 2: DJ.
- 27:18Speaker 3: That is what every franchise is looking for from their quarterback.
- 27:22Speaker 3: You need a quarterback that can do that because it's
- 27:25Speaker 3: too hard in this game to always get the play
- 27:27Speaker 3: calls right. Sometimes you want your quarterback to be able
- 27:30Speaker 3: to erase some of your mistakes and make it look
- 27:32Speaker 3: good on the back end the game.
- 27:34Speaker 1: On the line, Chargers go cover zero, they get pressure
- 27:38Speaker 1: on Josh Allen. What does he do kind of a
- 27:40Speaker 1: Mahomes type move where he just retreats and buys time.
- 27:44Speaker 1: That way, the Chargers miscommunicate the bunch and the release.
- 27:48Speaker 1: They end up popping popping free. But if Josh Allen's
- 27:51Speaker 1: going to just hang in there back foot and try
- 27:53Speaker 1: and throw it, there's nothing He's gonna get hit in
- 27:55Speaker 1: the back of the head. He does a nice job retreating,
- 27:57Speaker 1: buying time backfoot makes an impressive It was a game
- 28:00Speaker 1: winner on the other side of the ball for the
- 28:02Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Buck.
- 28:04Speaker 1: You know, we talk a lot about the importance of
- 28:06Speaker 1: you know, winning quarterback play and can you get to
- 28:10Speaker 1: the quarterback like that? That's the championship philosophy here.
- 28:14Speaker 2: So tell me if you.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Think sacks are an important stat or they're an overrated stat.
- 28:18Speaker 1: The number one team in the league in sacks is
- 28:20Speaker 1: the Baltimore Ravens. The number two team is the Miami Dolphins,
- 28:24Speaker 1: The number three team is the Buffalo Bills, the number
- 28:27Speaker 1: four team is the Kansas City Chiefs, and number five
- 28:29Speaker 1: team is Indianapolis Colts. I mean, these are all playoff
- 28:32Speaker 1: caliber teams with the top three Baltimore, Miami Buffalo, and
- 28:37Speaker 1: I would say even though Kansas City is not right
- 28:39Speaker 1: right now offensive, their defense has been pretty elite. They
- 28:42Speaker 1: have the capability of the ceiling of a quarterback playing
- 28:44Speaker 1: at a monster level for a three to four week
- 28:47Speaker 1: playoff stretch and a defense that can rush the passer.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Those are you know, especially those top three Baltimore, Miami Buffalo,
- 28:54Speaker 1: those are super Bowl caliber teams.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Yeah, super caliber teams. You're talking about the Kansay Chiefs.
- 28:59Speaker 3: But yeah, one of the reason while they're able to
- 29:00Speaker 3: hang in every game is because their defense has played
- 29:02Speaker 3: LIFs out. When you think about the Buffalo Bills and
- 29:05Speaker 3: the other teams that you mentioned, Miami Baltimore being able
- 29:09Speaker 3: to stat the quarterback well, DJ, this is a game
- 29:11Speaker 3: where we talk about negative plays, splash plays, as Mike
- 29:14Speaker 3: Tomlin always likes to talk about, they changed the game
- 29:17Speaker 3: because when you hit the quarterback and you knock the
- 29:19Speaker 3: quarterback down, a couple of things happen. Not only the
- 29:22Speaker 3: negative yards from the sack, but it quick as the clock.
- 29:24Speaker 3: A quickened clock leads to hurry throws, arrant passes. Those
- 29:28Speaker 3: passes eventually are tipped or overthrown. They lead the turnovers,
- 29:32Speaker 3: and so it all works together. The pressure from the
- 29:36Speaker 3: front line, whether you bring in second level defenders, whatever.
- 29:39Speaker 3: If you get pressure on the quarterback, it increases your
- 29:42Speaker 3: opportunity to get turnovers and to change the game.
- 29:45Speaker 2: And you have to be able to do it.
- 29:47Speaker 3: And the teams that don't have the ability to knock
- 29:50Speaker 3: the quarterback down, you don't have a hard time staying
- 29:52Speaker 3: in the tournament for the long term because you're not
- 29:54Speaker 3: going to generate enough negative plays to win.
- 29:57Speaker 1: No question. And that is a team flow that's done it.
- 30:00Speaker 1: And the Baltimore Ravens there at the top of them,
- 30:02Speaker 1: and the Miami Dolphins one and two in that category
- 30:04Speaker 1: are going to score off this week. Looking forward to
- 30:06Speaker 1: that one. Browns Texans Joe Flacco, he's rolling somehow. You know,
- 30:10Speaker 1: the Browns are one of three teams still live for
- 30:12Speaker 1: the number one seed in the tournament. I mean, what
- 30:14Speaker 1: a testament to how well rounded this roster is, how
- 30:19Speaker 1: dominant this defensive front has been. Jim Schwartz doing a
- 30:22Speaker 1: great job there on the defensive side of the ball,
- 30:24Speaker 1: Miles Garrett having a defensive Player of the Year type year,
- 30:27Speaker 1: but Joe Flacco stepping in and not only saving the season,
- 30:31Speaker 1: buck making them a dangerous team.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Yeah, making them a dangerous team.
- 30:36Speaker 3: And look, I'll say this, Joe Flacco has been able
- 30:37Speaker 3: to make them dangerous despite having an issue with his
- 30:40Speaker 3: own turnovers, like he turns the ball over, but his
- 30:43Speaker 3: aggressiveness in the passing game forces you defend every area
- 30:48Speaker 3: of the field. It is loosen up the block that
- 30:52Speaker 3: teams had on the running game, because now you've really
- 30:54Speaker 3: got to back up because Joe Flacco will take those
- 30:57Speaker 3: shots and if you don't, if you're stubborn, he will
- 31:00Speaker 3: go to Amari Cooper over and over and over again.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Amary Cooper had over two hundred and fifty yards, maybe
- 31:04Speaker 3: two hundred and sixty five yards, some ridiculous number catching
- 31:08Speaker 3: the ball. And it's because Joe Flacco is willing to
- 31:11Speaker 3: let it go. And as teams are preparing for the Browns,
- 31:14Speaker 3: they have to prepare it for a different version of
- 31:16Speaker 3: the Browns. And I'll be honest, this version is even
- 31:18Speaker 3: different than the version that we saw with Deshaun Watson,
- 31:21Speaker 3: and so Kevin Stefanski has been able to aggressively use
- 31:26Speaker 3: back pages of the playbook to allow this team to
- 31:29Speaker 3: be more aggressive. They've scored more and with the defense
- 31:32Speaker 3: that they have, if they can put a fourteen spot
- 31:35Speaker 3: on you and allow Miles Garrett and company to begin
- 31:37Speaker 3: to harass the quarterback, the turnovers begin to come in bunches,
- 31:41Speaker 3: and that's when they go from good to great.
- 31:43Speaker 1: One of the things I love, I love when you
- 31:45Speaker 1: have an offensive head coach with a dominant defense, because
- 31:49Speaker 1: so many times when you have a defensive head coach
- 31:51Speaker 1: with a dominant defense, they tell the offense, hey, don't
- 31:54Speaker 1: screw up, don't turn it over. We're going to keep
- 31:56Speaker 1: the score down. We're going to win thirteen to ten.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Whereas an offensive coach with a dominant defense says, you
- 32:01Speaker 1: know what, our defense can bail us out. Let's play aggressive.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Let's go out there and chase points. Even if we
- 32:05Speaker 1: make some mistakes, our defense is going to be able
- 32:08Speaker 1: to back us up. Maybe they'll get, you know, force
- 32:09Speaker 1: a field goal, they'll get off the field. But let's
- 32:12Speaker 1: play aggressive because we can live with some turnovers. But
- 32:15Speaker 1: let's go out there and try and chase points knowing
- 32:17Speaker 1: our defense has our back. It's two totally different philosophies.
- 32:20Speaker 1: But you know, I think back to you know, look
- 32:23Speaker 1: at it where the forty nine ers are right now.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Obviously they have a dominant defense and they've played that way,
- 32:27Speaker 1: but you've got an offense and Kyle Shannon said, look,
- 32:29Speaker 1: let's go be aggressive. Hey, if we make a mistake,
- 32:32Speaker 1: we make a mistake, our defense will have our back.
- 32:33Speaker 1: I just love that combination in that formula.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Well, here's what I love from Cleveland Browns.
- 32:39Speaker 3: Like the offensive head coach being aggressive, defensive head coach
- 32:43Speaker 3: being aggressive. With DJ there's a toughness that this team has.
- 32:46Speaker 3: And I'm not talking about the physical toughness. I'm talking
- 32:48Speaker 3: about the mental toughness to not collapse when you lose
- 32:50Speaker 3: all your quarterbacks to not collapse when you lose an
- 32:53Speaker 3: NFL Russian leader in Nick Chubb, to not collapse when
- 32:57Speaker 3: you have injuries on the offensive line, to not worry
- 32:59Speaker 3: about all that and to keep playing.
- 33:01Speaker 2: This team has ten wins. And if you think about
- 33:03Speaker 2: the list of injuries and.
- 33:04Speaker 3: You think about other teams around the league who have
- 33:06Speaker 3: offered up every excuse as to why they're not able
- 33:09Speaker 3: to be in the hunt and those things.
- 33:11Speaker 2: To me, it is the resilience.
- 33:13Speaker 3: It's the gritty mindset that somebody has said, Kevin Stefanski,
- 33:17Speaker 3: Jim Schwartz, it runs throughout the locker room that they
- 33:21Speaker 3: didn't collapse when all of us on the outside world
- 33:24Speaker 3: were like, ah, there's no chance that the Cleveland Browns
- 33:26Speaker 3: are gonna.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Be able to do it.
- 33:27Speaker 3: They're like, no, they figured it out. And now in
- 33:29Speaker 3: figuring it out, they've become a team that's really dangerous.
- 33:32Speaker 2: I'm be honest with you, DJ.
- 33:33Speaker 3: I know Joe Flacco is thirty eight, but this team
- 33:37Speaker 3: is more dangerous now than they were at any point
- 33:40Speaker 3: during the season.
- 33:41Speaker 2: And I think when we kind of ask some of
- 33:42Speaker 2: these teams who we may.
- 33:44Speaker 3: Not want to face off with, I certainly don't want
- 33:46Speaker 3: to face off with the Cleveland Browns because the defense
- 33:48Speaker 3: is jit and as long as Joe Flacco is pushing
- 33:51Speaker 3: the envelope like he has, they have a chance to
- 33:53Speaker 3: knock off anybody in an AFC playoff field.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Yeah, and I always said this too. When you get
- 33:59Speaker 1: to quarterbacks postseason, it's about ceiling. It's not about floor.
- 34:02Speaker 1: A floor can get you through the regular season. A floor,
- 34:04Speaker 1: a high floor, can help you win double digit games.
- 34:07Speaker 1: When you get in the tournament, it's about can you elevate?
- 34:09Speaker 1: And can you elevate for three to four weeks?
- 34:11Speaker 2: That's it.
- 34:12Speaker 1: And that's what Joe Flack was already done the first
- 34:14Speaker 1: Super Bowl that he won, was he was this unbelievable
- 34:17Speaker 1: quarterback throughout the whole season. He was unbelievable for a month.
- 34:20Speaker 1: That's all you need. It's about the ceiling. It's not
- 34:22Speaker 1: about the floor. I mean, you tell me if I'm
- 34:25Speaker 1: wrong there, Buck, But that's what I've always believed.
- 34:29Speaker 3: No, because in the playoffs and as we get into
- 34:32Speaker 3: the playoffs and begin to have these discussions DJ, the
- 34:35Speaker 3: microscope then goes to the quarterback because the teams are
- 34:38Speaker 3: even now, it's all good teams in the tournament vying
- 34:41Speaker 3: for the title, and so the separating factor is the
- 34:45Speaker 3: level of the quarterback. Can the quarterback take his game
- 34:48Speaker 3: up a notch and lead the team in the offense
- 34:51Speaker 3: to higher heights. And so when we talk about Joe
- 34:53Speaker 3: Flack on how he elevated doing that Super Bowl run
- 34:55Speaker 3: with the Baltimore Ravens where I think he had eleven
- 34:58Speaker 3: touchdowns and only one interception, and he may play after
- 35:01Speaker 3: play after play, well, that experience matters, and that experience
- 35:04Speaker 3: not only matters for him, but it matters for those
- 35:07Speaker 3: around him. We always talk about how the quarterback is
- 35:10Speaker 3: a force multiplier, and you and I have talked about
- 35:13Speaker 3: how the one thing that a franchise quarterback, a true legitimate,
- 35:16Speaker 3: elite franchise quarterback, can do, he inspires hope. Well, when
- 35:21Speaker 3: they know that that quarterback has a higher ceiling, not
- 35:24Speaker 3: the floor, a high ceiling where he can do it
- 35:27Speaker 3: in a three or four game stretch where everyone begins
- 35:29Speaker 3: to believe that those Super Bowl dreams can become a reality.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Yeah, no question. I'll tell you what.
- 35:36Speaker 1: The Browns, it's going an interesting team if they get
- 35:38Speaker 1: when they get into the tournament and who they match
- 35:40Speaker 1: up with their former quarterback by the way, once upon
- 35:42Speaker 1: a time, the number one overall pick Baker Mayfield.
- 35:45Speaker 2: He is with the Bucks.
- 35:46Speaker 1: You got to see them, see them and him up
- 35:48Speaker 1: close and personal. It's been a little bit of a
- 35:50Speaker 1: free fall for your Jags on the call for those games. Buck,
- 35:53Speaker 1: But let's start on the other side. First of all,
- 35:55Speaker 1: here with the Bucks in the run they've been on.
- 35:58Speaker 3: Okay, So here's the funny thing, not only about the
- 36:00Speaker 3: free fall for the Jags, but I think DJ every
- 36:03Speaker 3: team in the playoff field has undergone some kind of skid,
- 36:07Speaker 3: right You think about the Buffalo Bills. I think four
- 36:09Speaker 3: weeks ago we were saying it was all over, like
- 36:11Speaker 3: they were talking about Sean McDermott and those things. You
- 36:14Speaker 3: think about. Philadelphia lost three in a row. San Francisco
- 36:17Speaker 3: lost three in a row, So that's kind of a
- 36:19Speaker 3: part of the deal. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I think,
- 36:22Speaker 3: at one point, lost six of seven games before going
- 36:26Speaker 3: on this recent four game win streak. So when we
- 36:30Speaker 3: think about it, that has to be a part of
- 36:32Speaker 3: your DNA and the teams that can hold it together
- 36:34Speaker 3: when they come on the other side, man, they're the
- 36:36Speaker 3: ones that have enough of that that grit and resilience
- 36:39Speaker 3: to know that, ay, we've been through the bad moments,
- 36:41Speaker 3: we can get to it. And I say all that
- 36:43Speaker 3: to say that Baker Mayfield is the perfect quarterback for
- 36:45Speaker 3: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at this moment. All of the
- 36:47Speaker 3: adversity that he faced going from Cleveland to Carolina to
- 36:50Speaker 3: the Rams to now landing in Tampa Bay has made him,
- 36:54Speaker 3: I would say, a different quarterback.
- 36:56Speaker 2: The quarterback that I watch on the field mature to
- 37:00Speaker 2: never lost.
- 37:01Speaker 3: His confidence, but dj what he made was what I
- 37:04Speaker 3: call grown man. Plays fourth and short, having to scramble,
- 37:09Speaker 3: He'll stick his nose in there and get it. They're
- 37:12Speaker 3: trying to pressure and people right in his face. Here
- 37:14Speaker 3: throws a dart to Mike Evans, and what you see
- 37:17Speaker 3: is man. When the team loves the quarterback, it changes.
- 37:23Speaker 3: There's a genuine affinity from the Buccaneers players to Baker Mayfield.
- 37:28Speaker 3: He's ingratiated himself to the team. He still has the swag,
- 37:32Speaker 3: he's still super competitive, he has all of that other stuff.
- 37:36Speaker 3: But to me, I feel like the winding Road has
- 37:39Speaker 3: kind of taught him how to be a better teammate.
- 37:41Speaker 3: This is a dude that makes the Buccaneers dangerous on defense,
- 37:44Speaker 3: they're high pressure, they come after, but the weapons on
- 37:46Speaker 3: the outside on offense, god winning Evans with Baker Mayfield
- 37:50Speaker 3: being able to get the ball out of his hands
- 37:52Speaker 3: in this version of an offense that was very similar
- 37:54Speaker 3: to what he ran in LA. Yeah, this is a
- 37:56Speaker 3: tough team to deal with watching it up close and personal. Yeah,
- 38:00Speaker 3: Baker Mayfield and the Bucks are Hanfield. Yeah, this is
- 38:03Speaker 3: the best year of his career.
- 38:04Speaker 1: You know, you think about the year he had with
- 38:06Speaker 1: the Browns, his best year there, actually has the same
- 38:08Speaker 1: numbers as he has right now in terms of almost
- 38:11Speaker 1: identical in terms of yards, touchdowns, interceptions, twenty six touchdowns,
- 38:15Speaker 1: eight picks. This was twenty twenty. This year twenty six touchdowns,
- 38:20Speaker 1: eight picks, almost identical. That was sixteen games. He had
- 38:23Speaker 1: thirty five sixty three yards. He's got thirty five ninety
- 38:26Speaker 1: eight now, so he's still got two more games to go,
- 38:28Speaker 1: so he's going to clips all those numbers. But really
- 38:30Speaker 1: playing the best ball of his career. And you touched
- 38:31Speaker 1: on the teammate thing, remember with Odell and all the
- 38:34Speaker 1: drama that existed there and how ugly that got towards
- 38:36Speaker 1: the end of his time there in Cleveland, and then
- 38:38Speaker 1: he kind of goes on that interesting ride to Carolina
- 38:41Speaker 1: and then too the Rams for a minute. He's found
- 38:44Speaker 1: a home here in Tampa. And it also shows you
- 38:46Speaker 1: the power of belief when you have the confidence of
- 38:48Speaker 1: not all your teammates, your coaches, even Jason Light when
- 38:51Speaker 1: he's gone on the record right when they brought him
- 38:53Speaker 1: into the building, they were elated and excited to have him.
- 38:57Speaker 1: And I think that's helped him, you know, play loose, play, free, play,
- 39:00Speaker 1: confident and kind of go back to the best version
- 39:02Speaker 1: of himself. So good for Baker Mayfield on the jag
- 39:04Speaker 1: side of things, DJ help me out here.
- 39:06Speaker 3: Barka's going on continue the thing with Baker Mayfield. And
- 39:11Speaker 3: this is why, because we're at a time where we're
- 39:13Speaker 3: so hard on young quarterbacks that were ready to throw
- 39:15Speaker 3: them off, and I think that Baker mayfield journey and
- 39:18Speaker 3: odyssey should be something for us to think about when
- 39:21Speaker 3: we talk about the twenty twenty one quarterbacks, whether it's
- 39:24Speaker 3: Trey Lance or Zach Wilson or Max Jones or all
- 39:26Speaker 3: those guys. Like everyone is going to poor dirdenem and
- 39:29Speaker 3: think that it's all over. But how you handle yourself
- 39:32Speaker 3: after that first dismissal, man can go a long way
- 39:36Speaker 3: to determine whether you have not only another chance to
- 39:39Speaker 3: extend your career, but another chance to be a legitimate
- 39:42Speaker 3: high end starting quarterback.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield learned along the way, and it wasn't perfect.
- 39:46Speaker 3: So there were some flaws there, there were some hiccups,
- 39:48Speaker 3: But I am telling you that if you can get
- 39:50Speaker 3: to the other side, there's something to be said for it.
- 39:52Speaker 2: And for eighteen, there is.
- 39:54Speaker 3: Value in kicking the tires on a high end quarterback
- 39:57Speaker 3: because what I can tell you field level watching Baker Mayfield,
- 40:01Speaker 3: the first round talent shows up in the way that
- 40:04Speaker 3: he spins the ball. So now it's about taking someone
- 40:07Speaker 3: who has that kind of talent and putting them in
- 40:09Speaker 3: the right offense, the right environment, with the people around them,
- 40:12Speaker 3: with the right set of believers to kind of puff
- 40:15Speaker 3: that confidence in them. You may get what you thought
- 40:18Speaker 3: you were getting when you drafted them. So all is
- 40:21Speaker 3: not lost on some of these young quarterbacks. Baker Mayfield
- 40:23Speaker 3: is a tale, a good tale that hey, you can
- 40:26Speaker 3: bounce back for some of these difficult moments early in
- 40:28Speaker 3: your career.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Well, stay on the quarterback, then tell me what's going
- 40:32Speaker 1: on with Trevor. You're there every week?
- 40:34Speaker 2: What are you seeing? Look?
- 40:35Speaker 3: Man, when I look at the jaguarswe Here's what I
- 40:37Speaker 3: would say. DJ I just mentioned all those teams that
- 40:39Speaker 3: have had losing skis and all those other things. I
- 40:42Speaker 3: think what happens in those moments, the true character of
- 40:45Speaker 3: the team is revealed, and so no one is going
- 40:48Speaker 3: to help you get to the other side.
- 40:50Speaker 2: You have to kind of dig down deep. You have
- 40:51Speaker 2: to be honest with yourself.
- 40:53Speaker 3: You have to be honest with how you're playing, how
- 40:55Speaker 3: everyone else around you is playing, and then you have
- 40:57Speaker 3: to fix it. I will say Trevor is struggling, but
- 41:00Speaker 3: he's struggling not only because of his own things with
- 41:03Speaker 3: injuries and turnovers and look, a shaky offensive line, receivers
- 41:09Speaker 3: in and out of the lineup, all of that stuff
- 41:11Speaker 3: is going on. I would say that there is a
- 41:13Speaker 3: lack of confidence right now because you lost for in
- 41:16Speaker 3: a row and you're trying to figure out how can
- 41:18Speaker 3: you get a win. And it will turn around for
- 41:20Speaker 3: Trevor and for everybody else when they just keep the
- 41:23Speaker 3: main things the main thing, just do the simple plays
- 41:26Speaker 3: really really well. So if you just say, hey, let's
- 41:28Speaker 3: just make sure we get out of the huddle on time,
- 41:30Speaker 3: get lined up, run to play, make sure everyone knows
- 41:32Speaker 3: exactly who they're blocking.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Let's blocking, and then start stacking wins.
- 41:36Speaker 3: For Trevor, I will say I have more admiration for
- 41:40Speaker 3: him this year than any other year because it's been really,
- 41:42Speaker 3: really tough. But each and every week he asks for
- 41:45Speaker 3: the ball and he takes the start, and so there's
- 41:49Speaker 3: some things that he can clean up.
- 41:50Speaker 2: The toughness is there.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Now, it's about making sure that you get the execution
- 41:54Speaker 3: up to the level so you can kind.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Of lead your team to wins.
- 41:58Speaker 3: But he's doing with a lot of young people trying
- 42:00Speaker 3: to do He's trying to do it all.
- 42:02Speaker 2: On his own.
- 42:03Speaker 3: And once he kind of realizes less is more, let
- 42:06Speaker 3: me dial back, let me just stay within the framework
- 42:08Speaker 3: of the offense, let me make the simple plays to
- 42:10Speaker 3: routine plays. Then the other players will come and look, man,
- 42:14Speaker 3: there's still two games left. They have enough time to
- 42:16Speaker 3: get into the tournament. A lot of it is can
- 42:19Speaker 3: Trevor reset himself and then reset the team and get
- 42:22Speaker 3: them to believe that they still can go out and win.
- 42:25Speaker 1: This is why you know, We've been doing this for
- 42:26Speaker 1: a long time. We've been friends for a long time.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Because you literally went the direction I was going to go.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Rookie year, seventeen starts, second year seventeen starts. This year
- 42:34Speaker 1: he started all fifteen games through a whole host of
- 42:36Speaker 1: injuries he's battled through this year. Just the ability to
- 42:39Speaker 1: post what that means to his teammates. To me, while
- 42:42Speaker 1: you might not be excited about what the building looks
- 42:45Speaker 1: like for Trevor right now, maybe there's some there's some
- 42:50Speaker 1: drywall that needs to be patched, maybe we've got a
- 42:52Speaker 1: little something going on with the roof buck, he is
- 42:54Speaker 1: solidifying his foundation with the organization just by posting, just
- 42:59Speaker 1: by going on out there and plan. When everybody in
- 43:01Speaker 1: that building and maybe not nationally, it's understood what he's
- 43:05Speaker 1: dealing with. You would know you're there each and every week.
- 43:07Speaker 1: But to me, I think there is value and I
- 43:09Speaker 1: do think that pours more concrete in the foundation of
- 43:12Speaker 1: his career.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so.
- 43:14Speaker 3: DJ, Like we always talk about it, we come from
- 43:17Speaker 3: an era in terms of like scouting, where men a
- 43:19Speaker 3: franchise quarterback takes the ball every week. This is what
- 43:22Speaker 3: it is. Ben Roethlisberg and Eli Manning, Philip Rivers. They
- 43:25Speaker 3: take the ball every week. When it's not baseball, you
- 43:29Speaker 3: don't do your lineup card, but when you fill it in,
- 43:31Speaker 3: QB one is always there.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Trevor Lawrence has shown that he'll do that.
- 43:34Speaker 3: Whether it's a knee injury, show the injury, concussion, he
- 43:37Speaker 3: shows up every week.
- 43:39Speaker 2: And so that toughness is there.
- 43:41Speaker 3: Now it's about taking that toughness, that dependability, that reliability and.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Just look helping him help others.
- 43:48Speaker 3: So figure out what the quarterback does well, figure out
- 43:51Speaker 3: what he's comfortable with, continue to talk to him through
- 43:53Speaker 3: those game management situations and allow him to slowly build
- 43:57Speaker 3: up his own confidence and the confidence of others. Well,
- 44:00Speaker 3: if they get to the other side of this, if
- 44:03Speaker 3: Trevor gets to the other side of this, it will
- 44:05Speaker 3: unlock the potential of the team. It's doesn't matter. Are

- 44:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and again, not where they want to be right
- 44:16Speaker 1: now in terms of how they're playing, but just get
- 44:18Speaker 1: into the tournament. And this is a quarterback. When we
- 44:20Speaker 1: talk about ceiling and that's been kind of the word
- 44:22Speaker 1: of the day. Trevor still has a very high ceiling.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Hopefully gets healthy, Jags get right, they get into the tournament,
- 44:27Speaker 1: and we see the best of Trevor Lawrence once we
- 44:29Speaker 1: get to the postseason. All Right, we covered a lot
- 44:32Speaker 1: of ground on some big games today. I hope you
- 44:34Speaker 1: have enjoyed this episode. I know you're probably asking, what
- 44:37Speaker 1: the heck will you guys can talk about the Chiefs
- 44:39Speaker 1: and the Raiders. Well, we save that. We want to
- 44:41Speaker 1: have a little bit longer discussion on that one. We
- 44:43Speaker 1: will have that posted for you tomorrow, so be on
- 44:46Speaker 1: the lookout for that. All right, that's going to do
- 44:48Speaker 1: it for us today and we'll see it tomorrow.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Right here on, move the sticks
- 45:01Speaker 1: You want to
