- 0:00I would invite you to open your Bible
- 0:03to 1 Timothy chapter 3
- 0:05to 1 Timothy chapter 3 as you do that.
- 0:09You know, I have I have some comments
- 0:10here
- 0:11thinking Dr. Mohler thanking the
- 0:13faculty, but
- 0:15you know, to just speak from the heart
- 0:16for a second. Um,
- 0:18you know, it's it's hard to
- 0:20calculate you know, the debt of
- 0:22gratitude
- 0:23that I owe to all of the men here who
- 0:26taught me to Dr. Mohler for building a
- 0:29kind of institution like this so
- 0:31genuinely. Brothers, thank you for your
- 0:35investment in me. And for those of you
- 0:37here, thank you for being here. I hope
- 0:39this is helpful for you.
- 0:42As I as I thought about how to encourage
- 0:44you
- 0:45this morning,
- 0:47I couldn't help but reflect
- 0:49on my own time at Southern,
- 0:52my own time preparing for pastoral
- 0:55ministry specifically
- 0:57thinking about
- 0:59lessons, messages
- 1:01I wish I had heeded more carefully,
- 1:04more closely during that season of my
- 1:07life as
- 1:09wisdom cries from the streets
- 1:13as Proverbs says.
- 1:16I was reflecting on that season of my
- 1:17life and Paul's words in 1 Timothy
- 1:20chapter 3 is teaching on the
- 1:23qualifications for elders
- 1:25kept coming to mind.
- 1:27There are a number of reasons for that,
- 1:28but let me just give you one textually.
- 1:32Look at how Paul begins
- 1:35this section of his letter in 1 Timothy
- 1:373 verse 1.
- 1:39If [snorts] anyone
- 1:42aspires
- 1:44to the office
- 1:46of overseer.
- 1:48If anyone
- 1:50aspires.
- 1:52In other words, Paul has
- 1:56a particular orientation, a particular
- 1:58audience
- 2:00in view in this passage. He has in his
- 2:02gaze
- 2:04the aspiring,
- 2:07the not yet pastors. Current pastors
- 2:10need this passage. I need this passage.
- 2:11I need it again and again. It's not
- 2:13exclusively for those who are aspiring,
- 2:16but it is particularly for those who are
- 2:19aspiring.
- 2:23Which means
- 2:25Paul has in his gaze
- 2:28many of you.
- 2:31He's speaking to you.
- 2:34If Paul were preaching at a seminary
- 2:36chapel,
- 2:37this is at least one thing
- 2:40we know he would say.
- 2:44So, let's read this passage together.
- 2:47I know it is
- 2:49Easter week. Tomorrow's Good Friday.
- 2:50Elder qualifications probably aren't the
- 2:52most like calendar sensitive sermon to
- 2:54preach on this day, but here we go. 1
- 2:56Timothy 3.
- 3:00This saying is trustworthy.
- 3:03If anyone aspires to the office of
- 3:05overseer,
- 3:07he desires a noble task.
- 3:11Therefore, an overseer must be above
- 3:13reproach,
- 3:15the husband of one wife,
- 3:17sober-minded,
- 3:19self-controlled,
- 3:21respectable,
- 3:23hospitable,
- 3:24able to teach,
- 3:27not a drunkard,
- 3:28not violent, but gentle,
- 3:31not quarrelsome,
- 3:33not a lover of money.
- 3:36He must manage his own household well
- 3:38with all dignity, keeping his children
- 3:40submissive.
- 3:42For if someone does not know how to
- 3:43manage his own household,
- 3:45how will he care for God's church?
- 3:48He must not be a recent convert or he
- 3:50may become puffed up with conceit and
- 3:52fall into the condemnation of the devil.
- 3:55Moreover, he must be well thought of by
- 3:56outsiders so that he may not fall into
- 3:59disgrace,
- 4:01into a snare
- 4:03of the devil.
- 4:06This isn't going to be a traditional
- 4:08exposition. We can't possibly talk about
- 4:10everything in this passage in the time
- 4:12that we have together. So, we're just
- 4:13going to consider four lessons from this
- 4:15paragraph on how to prepare for pastoral
- 4:19ministry. Four lessons on how to prepare
- 4:21for pastoral ministry. Before we do
- 4:23that, let me give you one disclaimer
- 4:25about this passage. Obviously, this
- 4:28passage is for a certain kind of person.
- 4:32It is for a brother who aspires to
- 4:34ministry.
- 4:36That may not be you.
- 4:39I I I If you don't aspire
- 4:42to pastoral ministry
- 4:44or for the sisters in the room
- 4:46for whom God has forbidden from holding
- 4:49that office,
- 4:51don't check out.
- 4:53This passage has something for you. You
- 4:56need this passage and let me tell you
- 4:57why.
- 4:58Give you at least two reasons. First,
- 5:01because saints, you belong to a church.
- 5:04You belong to a local church.
- 5:07Do you love
- 5:09your brothers and sisters
- 5:11in that church? Do you care for them?
- 5:14Then care for them enough that you want
- 5:17them to have good pastors.
- 5:20But saints, belonging to a church means
- 5:22caring just as much about your fellow
- 5:25members' spiritual health as you do your
- 5:27own.
- 5:29So, for your own sake
- 5:31and as an act of love for your brothers
- 5:32and sisters, you should be deeply
- 5:34invested in appointing and supporting
- 5:37and funding and encouraging elders like
- 5:40this.
- 5:43And second,
- 5:45even if you have no intention of
- 5:46becoming an elder or you cannot be an
- 5:49elder, you should care about what God
- 5:52says
- 5:53about elders and about pastors in this
- 5:56passage because this passage is in many
- 5:59ways a blueprint of the Christian life.
- 6:05I bet when we read the passage, a lot of
- 6:06you thought,
- 6:08"Well, that just kind of sounds like
- 6:09what every Christian is supposed to be."
- 6:12Exactly.
- 6:14That's the point.
- 6:161 Peter 5:1, I exhort the elders among
- 6:18you, "Shepherd the flock of God that is
- 6:21among you, being examples to the flock,
- 6:25examples." The Greek word tupoi, types.
- 6:29Some of you like typology in the Bible?
- 6:31You got typology going on in your church
- 6:34every week
- 6:36because by obeying 1 Timothy 3, elders
- 6:39are modeling,
- 6:41setting an an example of the normal
- 6:44Christian life.
- 6:46Saints, when God saved you,
- 6:49he didn't just drop a Bible out of the
- 6:51sky onto your head and say, "What Just
- 6:54Just do your best."
- 6:57No No, he saves you and he puts you into
- 6:59a church with qualified men who model in
- 7:02front of you what it is that you're
- 7:03reading.
- 7:05So So, if this passage doesn't describe
- 7:07you directly,
- 7:10don't check out.
- 7:11There is plenty for you here.
- 7:16All right, disclaimer over.
- 7:18Brothers, those of you who see pastoral
- 7:20ministry on the horizon, four lessons
- 7:23from this passage on how to prepare for
- 7:25ministry. First lesson,
- 7:28aspire,
- 7:29don't assume.
- 7:32Aspire.
- 7:34Do not
- 7:35assume.
- 7:38Here, I just want to recommend to
- 7:39everyone
- 7:41Bobby Jamieson's excellent book The Path
- 7:43to Being a Pastor and the fingerprints
- 7:45of which are all over this point of my
- 7:48sermon. Look carefully at how Paul talks
- 7:51about those preparing for ministry. He
- 7:54says, "If anyone aspires."
- 7:58"If anyone aspires
- 8:01to the office of overseer."
- 8:05Brothers, I want to encourage you
- 8:08to think about yourself
- 8:10primarily not in the category of someone
- 8:12who is called,
- 8:15but someone who aspires
- 8:18to ministry.
- 8:20I'm I'm not trying to be the vocabulary
- 8:21police and I'm not trying to turn you
- 8:23into the vocabulary police and I'm not
- 8:25suggesting you can't ever use the word
- 8:26called for called to ministry.
- 8:29What I What I do want to do is attend to
- 8:32the language of scripture on this point
- 8:34and I'd suggest that of all people,
- 8:36pastors and those preparing to be
- 8:38pastors should imitate the idiom and the
- 8:40patterns of speech of Jesus and his
- 8:43apostles.
- 8:44Brothers, consider carefully what you
- 8:46mean if you use the phrase called to
- 8:50ministry. I know some of you use that
- 8:51term carefully. That's fine. You mean an
- 8:53interior calling in terms of desire that
- 8:55that's then confirmed later by an
- 8:57external calling of a church. That's
- 8:58fine. Not trying to police vocabulary.
- 9:00But brothers, what I do want to do is
- 9:02warn you against the idea that a calling
- 9:05to ministry is some kind of private
- 9:08infallible verdict over your life from
- 9:11God that he wants you to be a pastor.
- 9:14I want to warn you against identifying
- 9:16yourself as someone entitled
- 9:19to pastoral ministry
- 9:21because you've been
- 9:23quote called.
- 9:26That way of thinking is nowhere in the
- 9:28Bible.
- 9:30The Bible does, however, give us a
- 9:32better word
- 9:33for thinking about the pursuit of
- 9:36ministry. It's in this word aspiration.
- 9:40It It gives us the idea
- 9:44that
- 9:45we are looking forward to, aspiring,
- 9:48striving after the office of elder.
- 9:52You see, discerning a call
- 9:55directs your gaze inward at your
- 9:57desires.
- 9:59Aspiring directs your gaze outward
- 10:03at qualifications.
- 10:05Calling puts others in a place of having
- 10:08to submit to something you're suggesting
- 10:10comes from God.
- 10:12Aspiration puts you in the place of
- 10:14striving, growing, cultivating a life
- 10:17that looks like 1 Timothy 3, which we
- 10:19know comes from God.
- 10:23So, brothers, if if there's a desire to
- 10:26be a pastor rummaging around in your
- 10:28heart,
- 10:29I don't think the question to first ask
- 10:32is, am I called? But instead, how can I
- 10:34grow into the kind of man described in 1
- 10:37Timothy 3?
- 10:40Again, Bobby Jamieson writes, "Calling
- 10:42asks you to picture yourself at the end
- 10:45of the trail.
- 10:46Aspiration points out the path
- 10:50and tells you to take the first step."
- 10:54So, brothers, aspire.
- 10:56Aspire
- 10:58well.
- 11:00Don't view this season of your life as
- 11:03the necessary hoop that you got to jump
- 11:05through. Well, I know God has already
- 11:06called me to be a pastor, so now I just
- 11:08got to go through the motions.
- 11:12No, brothers, aspire.
- 11:15Aspire. You You hear the energy,
- 11:18the enthusiasm in that word?
- 11:21Right? Aspiration isn't a passive
- 11:25resignation to a verdict you think God
- 11:27has made over your life. It is an
- 11:29active, intentional pursuit of the kind
- 11:32of life that God demands of pastors. So,
- 11:36brothers, do you aspire? If so, then
- 11:40imprint these qualifications
- 11:43in your heart. Lean your life against
- 11:46them day by day. Let these
- 11:47qualifications expose and uproot and
- 11:51identify indwelling sin and then go to
- 11:56war.
- 11:58Employ them as preemptive strikes
- 12:02against sin in your heart. Ruthlessly,
- 12:05relentlessly target and eliminate
- 12:08anything Satan might employ
- 12:12to disqualify you from this
- 12:14noble task.
- 12:16Identify as one who aspires
- 12:21and then aspire well.
- 12:25Second lesson.
- 12:30Prioritize
- 12:32character.
- 12:34Prioritize character.
- 12:39Paul's list of qualifications just it it
- 12:41never ceases to amaze me.
- 12:44For all the things it doesn't say.
- 12:48An elder must be high capacity,
- 12:51highly intelligent, inspirational,
- 12:54dynamic, a highly skilled administrator,
- 12:57a capable people person, socially
- 12:59intelligent.
- 13:02He doesn't say any of that.
- 13:06He says, "You guys need shepherds? You
- 13:08need leaders? Okay.
- 13:10Any really good dads in the room?
- 13:15You got any guys that don't get drunk?
- 13:19Got any of those guys?
- 13:22Uh guys that love their wife?
- 13:24Don't overspend. People really like him
- 13:27at work. Get that guy."
- 13:32We tend to be like Israel, right?
- 13:35We want someone who's tall
- 13:38and someone who looks strong, someone
- 13:40with extraordinary gifts, and someone
- 13:42who can preach the lights out, and
- 13:44someone with a dynamic personality,
- 13:46someone who's funny and charming and
- 13:49magnetic.
- 13:52God wants the dad who's really good at
- 13:54teaching his 7-year-old how to have good
- 13:56character when he loses a baseball game.
- 14:01It's amazing.
- 14:03Gentle,
- 14:04hospitable,
- 14:07doesn't get into fights,
- 14:09not greedy, but generous.
- 14:13All these
- 14:15qualifications are utterly
- 14:18ordinary.
- 14:21And again, saints, that's the point.
- 14:23Because the Christian life is not an
- 14:26endless sequence of extraordinary
- 14:29ministry activity. It is ordinary,
- 14:31utterly ordinary, and pastors model for
- 14:34the saints the ordinary Christian life.
- 14:38And you want to know another reason why
- 14:40the qualifications are also ordinary?
- 14:43Because the hardest place to be godly
- 14:46is in ordinary life.
- 14:51You know, it's easy to be godly or at
- 14:53least appear godly
- 14:56in corporate worship.
- 14:59It's much harder to be godly in the
- 15:00corporate world.
- 15:04It's easy to be godly or at least appear
- 15:07godly on a short-term mission trip.
- 15:10It's much harder to be godly at the
- 15:11dinner table.
- 15:14It's easy to be godly or at least
- 15:18appear godly
- 15:20when you're diagramming Ephesians 6 in
- 15:22Greek.
- 15:24But when your 12-year-old,
- 15:27who knows nothing about the world,
- 15:31rolls his eyes at you,
- 15:35oh, let's see if you're gentle there.
- 15:39Let's see if you're sober-minded and
- 15:40self-controlled
- 15:42there.
- 15:46It's hard to be godly when you're
- 15:47disciplining your kids.
- 15:49And it's hard to be be godly when you're
- 15:52in a conflict with your wife
- 15:55and nobody's around to hear what you
- 15:57say.
- 15:59And Paul says
- 16:01that pastors are the men who have
- 16:03learned to be godly there.
- 16:07There in the ordinary stuff of life.
- 16:10It's It's those places where you show
- 16:13whether you're gentle,
- 16:15whether you trust God's sovereignty,
- 16:17whether you're quarrelsome,
- 16:19whether you can apply God's word to
- 16:21people.
- 16:25Brothers, notice Notice that this
- 16:28ordinary godliness is the dominant
- 16:32the dominant characteristic of the
- 16:35elder.
- 16:36Paul spills more ink on matters of
- 16:38character than he does on gifting. One
- 16:40qualification on gifting, able to teach.
- 16:42Every other qualification, not about
- 16:44gifting, but godliness.
- 16:48If you are aspiring to be a pastor, does
- 16:51your life and do your ambitions properly
- 16:54weight what Paul weights in 1 Timothy 3?
- 16:58Is the pursuit of godliness in all of
- 17:01your ordinary life your dominant
- 17:04concern?
- 17:06Or is learning Greek?
- 17:09Or writing a good paper?
- 17:14Brothers, if if you can diagram Romans
- 17:17in Greek by heart,
- 17:21but you've never worked a day in your
- 17:23life,
- 17:25you don't provide for the people who
- 17:26depend on you,
- 17:29well, you might be able to teach God's
- 17:30word, but you're not verse 2,
- 17:32respectable.
- 17:36Brothers, if you can explain
- 17:38Bavinck's distinctive contributions to
- 17:41theological anthropology,
- 17:45but you are never sharing your home,
- 17:48serving a meal,
- 17:49being hospitable,
- 17:53I don't know what you're doing, but it
- 17:55is not preparing for pastoral ministry.
- 18:00Brothers, listen. Pastoring is an
- 18:04intensely theological task. You will not
- 18:07do it faithfully if you do not know the
- 18:10Bible.
- 18:11But also, brothers, let's not lie to
- 18:13ourselves and think we are preparing for
- 18:16ministry rightly
- 18:18simply because we're studying Greek and
- 18:19Hebrew.
- 18:22Able to teach is a distinctive
- 18:24qualification of the elder. It is a
- 18:25necessary qualification. It is not the
- 18:28only qualification.
- 18:31And our lives should represent the same
- 18:35preoccupation with character that Paul
- 18:38has in this text. Brothers,
- 18:42some of you go through seminary like
- 18:44those guys at the gym
- 18:46who only work on chest and biceps.
- 18:51Don't skip leg day.
- 18:59Well, I got my nose in these books. I I
- 19:01don't have time to have people over for
- 19:03dinner.
- 19:05So, you think being a bad church member
- 19:08is the path to becoming a good pastor?
- 19:14Brothers, able to teach matters, but
- 19:15it's not the only thing that matters.
- 19:19And many of you would be greatly helped
- 19:21by considering whether you are applying
- 19:24the same degree of of intentionality and
- 19:26enthusiasm to growing in all the other
- 19:29qualifications
- 19:31as you may be in growing in becoming
- 19:34able to teach.
- 19:38Third lesson.
- 19:42Develop
- 19:44theologically.
- 19:46Develop
- 19:48theologically.
- 19:51Now, for all the cautions just gave you
- 19:53about exclusively fixating on able to
- 19:55teach and ignoring the other
- 19:58qualifications, this is the point where
- 19:59I want to make plain.
- 20:01Do not neglect that qualification.
- 20:05Because it is special.
- 20:08Able to teach.
- 20:10This is the qualification that separates
- 20:13pastors from deacons.
- 20:15That this is the one gifting, the one
- 20:17skill
- 20:18necessary for the pastor office. It may
- 20:21be mentioned only once here, but it is
- 20:23the most frequently recurring commission
- 20:25to pastors in the New Testament. Pastors
- 20:27teach. They are able to teach. Not able
- 20:30to entertain or attract a crowd, that's
- 20:32not the idea. Paul explains what able to
- 20:34teach means in other parts of 1 Timothy.
- 20:36Able to teach means 1 Timothy 4, you are
- 20:39someone who with your life and your
- 20:40doctrine, your teaching, is able to save
- 20:43those who hear you.
- 20:461 Timothy 1:5, your teaching cultivates
- 20:48love from a pure heart and a good
- 20:51conscience and a sincere faith. In other
- 20:54words, you can open the Bible in front
- 20:56of people in a way that produces
- 20:59spiritual fruit. You can think carefully
- 21:02about and explain plainly God's word in
- 21:06a way that cultivates faith and hope and
- 21:09love.
- 21:12And that work, brothers, that work in
- 21:14the midst of ordinary life takes
- 21:17extraordinary
- 21:19labor
- 21:21and diligence.
- 21:24And And I just want to plead with you
- 21:27to cultivate
- 21:29that skill
- 21:31aggressively
- 21:33now.
- 21:36Do not
- 21:38just get a degree.
- 21:41Learn.
- 21:43Take all the hardest classes.
- 21:46If it takes you 8 years to graduate,
- 21:48fine.
- 21:50Cultivate a happy obsession with the
- 21:53Bible.
- 21:55Cultivate a happy obsession with
- 21:58learning how to clarify and communicate
- 22:01the content of the Bible.
- 22:04And that's not a sam-a-body idea, that's
- 22:05a Apostle Paul idea. 1 Timothy 4:15,
- 22:09"Until I come, devote yourself to the
- 22:11public reading of scripture, to
- 22:13exhortation, to teaching. Practice these
- 22:15things. Immerse Immerse, plunge, drown
- 22:19yourself in them so that you all may so
- 22:22that all may see your progress."
- 22:27You know, you always see these books.
- 22:30They have titles like
- 22:33"Five ways seminary didn't prepare me
- 22:35for ministry."
- 22:37I hate those books.
- 22:41Obviously, I get what they You know,
- 22:42there's something to that. You can't
- 22:44learn everything in seminary. You need a
- 22:45local church, obviously, first and
- 22:47foremost. You need pastors, mentors. You
- 22:49need experience, opportunity. You can't
- 22:51learn everything in a classroom. But
- 22:52sometimes those books are all down on
- 22:55seminary
- 22:57because the authors don't like theology.
- 23:01"Well, in seminary, all you learn is
- 23:02Greek and Hebrew and systematics and
- 23:04this stuff doesn't matter in ministry."
- 23:08What planet are you living on?
- 23:12I use Greek and Hebrew every day.
- 23:17I need historical theology
- 23:20every day. In every conceivable context,
- 23:22it comes out.
- 23:24I I would be lost,
- 23:26utterly lost in pastoral ministry, in
- 23:29working with deacons, in doing marriage
- 23:31counseling, if Steve Wellum hadn't
- 23:34taught me how to think about theological
- 23:36method.
- 23:38Everything in ministry is theological.
- 23:42So, brothers, you must be
- 23:44able to teach.
- 23:49You know, an MDiv is no excuse
- 23:52to ignore cultivating character.
- 23:55But But cultivating character doesn't
- 23:57mean becoming indifferent
- 24:00to cultivating skill in the word.
- 24:04Prioritizing character doesn't mean
- 24:07tolerating theological sloppiness.
- 24:12Of all the people God could have
- 24:13appointed to lead the church, he didn't
- 24:15appoint administrators or creatives or
- 24:17people who can marshal volunteers, he
- 24:19appointed teachers.
- 24:21And that's because the success of the
- 24:23church doesn't depend on creativity or
- 24:24organizational ability or volunteer
- 24:26marshaling. Pastors are teachers because
- 24:29what God ultimately wants of his people
- 24:32is for them to know him.
- 24:35And that's what teachers do.
- 24:38We uphold the gospel.
- 24:40We explain that the Christian life is
- 24:42not about what we accomplish for God,
- 24:45it's about trusting what God has
- 24:47accomplished for us. Let me teach you
- 24:49about it.
- 24:53So, by putting the leadership of the
- 24:54church in the hands of teachers, God
- 24:56keeps the focus of his people
- 24:58exclusively on him and on his
- 25:00achievements and not our pitiful to-do
- 25:02list of ministry.
- 25:06So, brothers, aspiring to ministry,
- 25:09labor intensely
- 25:11over the word. Labor to know the
- 25:13character of God and the work of Christ
- 25:15at every possible angle because at the
- 25:17end of the day, teaching the gospel is
- 25:19the only thing that changes hearts. It's
- 25:21the only thing that rewires the human
- 25:23heart from the inside out. Study the
- 25:24work of God in the word of God so well
- 25:28that you can surgically apply it in
- 25:31every conceivable
- 25:33situation.
- 25:37Fourth lesson.
- 25:40Prepare for war.
- 25:42Prepare
- 25:44for war.
- 25:45I just want you to look one more time at
- 25:47verses 6 and 7.
- 25:50"He must not be a recent convert, or he
- 25:52may become puffed up with conceit and
- 25:54fall into the condemnation of the devil.
- 25:57Moreover, he must be well thought of by
- 25:59outsiders,
- 26:00so that he may not fall into disgrace,
- 26:03into a snare of the devil." You see
- 26:05that?
- 26:06Satan is mentioned twice.
- 26:09Twice in the elder qualifications.
- 26:13Why?
- 26:15Because pastors are a strategic target
- 26:19for demonic temptation because pastors
- 26:21are public and visible and their
- 26:23disqualifying failures shake the faith
- 26:25of the weak and belittle the name of
- 26:27Christ and very often destroy churches.
- 26:31Brothers, aspiring to pastoral ministry,
- 26:35pastoral ministry is war. Being an elder
- 26:37is war.
- 26:39You know, and it's not because deacon
- 26:40boards can be ungodly
- 26:42or because not meeting the budget is
- 26:44stressful
- 26:45or because
- 26:46people are mean to your kids when you
- 26:48say stuff in sermons that they don't
- 26:50like and and all that's true and that
- 26:51could be hard, it stinks.
- 26:54No, pastoral ministry is hard
- 26:58because all hell
- 27:00is at war against your devotion to
- 27:02Christ.
- 27:06Years ago, I remember meeting with a
- 27:07mentor of mine. He handed me a Bible. He
- 27:09had me read 1 Timothy 3.
- 27:12And then he asked me, "If Screwtape
- 27:14were writing a letter to Wormwood
- 27:17on how to disqualify you,
- 27:20what qualification would he go after?"
- 27:25That's not just a useful thought
- 27:26exercise.
- 27:28That's happening.
- 27:31Satan is at work
- 27:33against elders with disqualifying
- 27:36snares.
- 27:38Brothers, all the pastoral gifts and the
- 27:40charisma and theological ability in the
- 27:42world,
- 27:44divorced from character,
- 27:46will only destroy churches.
- 27:51You know, no church will implode cuz you
- 27:53preach a B- minus sermon.
- 27:57But indifference to qualifications,
- 28:00passivity in resisting Satan,
- 28:03that will destroy a congregation.
- 28:07So, finally,
- 28:09the question is,
- 28:12how do we get the spiritual resources
- 28:14for this kind of life?
- 28:17Obviously, no one can be these things
- 28:18perfectly, but we can be these things
- 28:21genuinely and truly. So, the question
- 28:23is, how?
- 28:25Because all of your best resolutions and
- 28:27all of your best intentions and all the
- 28:29little rules that we make for ourselves
- 28:31and all the willpower in the world won't
- 28:33make you this kind of person.
- 28:37So, what will?
- 28:40And the answer lies in considering one
- 28:43glorious truth in this text.
- 28:46That Christ designs his church
- 28:50to reflect, even in its authority
- 28:51structures, the very gospel we proclaim.
- 28:54Embedded into the authority structures
- 28:56of the church, into the office of elder,
- 28:58is a reminder of the gospel itself. Why
- 29:01does God require
- 29:02these qualifications of pastors?
- 29:05Why Why does he expect his shepherds to
- 29:07look like this, to have this kind of
- 29:09character, to be gentle and hospitable
- 29:11and generous?
- 29:14Because this is what the good shepherd
- 29:16is like.
- 29:19Everything that is good
- 29:21and beautiful
- 29:23and delightful in these qualifications
- 29:26is just a dim reflection
- 29:29of all that is good and beautiful and
- 29:32delightful
- 29:33in Jesus of Nazareth.
- 29:36Elders must be these things. Even more,
- 29:40brothers, elders
- 29:42can be these things
- 29:45because this kind of authority, this
- 29:47good, self-giving, humble, seeking the
- 29:50interest of others, gentle, hospitable
- 29:51authority is how Jesus shepherds us.
- 29:59He is never violent
- 30:01or unhinged.
- 30:04He doesn't scold the sheep.
- 30:07He was gentle
- 30:09and lowly.
- 30:11He was not greedy
- 30:13or a lover of money.
- 30:16But he who is rich for our sake became
- 30:18poor.
- 30:21He was not conceited
- 30:23but refused to count equality with God a
- 30:25thing to be grasped.
- 30:27And Satan's snares
- 30:30had no purchase
- 30:32in his heart.
- 30:35Brothers, how do we become faithful,
- 30:37gentle, hospitable, selfless, humble,
- 30:40qualified pastors? Not by willpower, not
- 30:42by better resolutions.
- 30:45No, you will be gentle only when you
- 30:46experience the gentleness of Christ
- 30:48toward you.
- 30:51You will be faithful to your wife only
- 30:53when you see just how faithful Christ
- 30:55has been toward faithless you.
- 31:00You'll escape the tyranny
- 31:02of the love of money only when you're
- 31:04confident that the one who gave you his
- 31:07own life surely
- 31:10surely can be trusted with your
- 31:11finances.
- 31:16Saints, that's what rewires our hearts.
- 31:18That's what changes all the motivation
- 31:19structures inside of us.
- 31:23Beloved,
- 31:24behold
- 31:26the extraordinary work of God
- 31:30in this passage.
- 31:32Elders, pastors
- 31:35are sheep
- 31:37who have been made into shepherds
- 31:40because Jesus is the true shepherd
- 31:43who became a sheep,
- 31:45the lamb of God
- 31:47who takes away our sins.
- 31:51So, maybe this passage isn't as far from
- 31:53Good Friday after all.
- 31:57Brothers, we can become the kind of man
- 31:59described in 1 Timothy 3, but only as we
- 32:02behold with ever-increasing clarity how
- 32:05Jesus was faithful and gentle and
- 32:08hospitable and selfless and humble in
- 32:10our place and as we see every good
- 32:12quality in him shine most gloriously in
- 32:16his self-sacrifice
- 32:18at the cross.
- 32:20There, supremely,
- 32:23at the cross,
- 32:25we find the pattern
- 32:27of faithful shepherding.
- 32:30And there,
- 32:31trusting in the cross,
- 32:33you find the power
- 32:36for faithful shepherding.
- 32:40Let's pray.
- 32:48Our God, we pray
- 32:50that you would increase our faith
- 32:53in the goodness
- 32:55of the great shepherd,
- 32:57Jesus of Nazareth.
- 32:59It's in his name we pray.
- 33:01Amen.
