- 2:03Speaker 3: on the show. Of course, the announcement came down yesterday
- 2:06Speaker 3: at about eleven fifty or so on talk Line that
- 2:10Speaker 3: Hoppy Kerchieval will be retiring as host of talk Line.
- 2:15Speaker 3: We're going to be talking about that a little bit,
- 2:18Speaker 3: I will say, programming note. Hoppy is going to join
- 2:20Speaker 3: me on the show top of the show tomorrow to
- 2:23Speaker 3: talk about that. But knowing Hoppy as I do, I
- 2:28Speaker 3: don't know that he's going to want to spend a
- 2:29Speaker 3: whole lot of time talking about it. In general. I
- 2:32Speaker 3: think it's going to be pretty much business as usual
- 2:34Speaker 3: till he finally hangs it up for good on January third. Now,
- 2:37Speaker 3: Hoppy is going to be around. He's going to be
- 2:39Speaker 3: continued doing three Guys and doing select commentaries and so
- 2:42Speaker 3: on and so forth. It's not totally going away. He's
- 2:45Speaker 3: just stepping away from the hosting duties on talk Line
- 2:49Speaker 3: on a daily basis. Gonna be replaced by TJ. Meadows
- 2:52Speaker 3: and Dave Wilson. Takes two to replace the goat. So
- 2:56Speaker 3: we'll talk to Hopy about it tomorrow, but I'll kind
- 2:58Speaker 3: of give my thoughts on a little bit later on.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Also on the show, Caylen George and Brian Dayton from
- 3:04Speaker 3: the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce will join us as
- 3:06Speaker 3: we head into the year twenty twenty five. What can
- 3:08Speaker 3: we expect from the business world in West Virginia. We're
- 3:11Speaker 3: going to kind of review things in twenty twenty four
- 3:13Speaker 3: and give a preview of twenty twenty five with Kaylin
- 3:16Speaker 3: and Brian from the Chamber of Commerce coming up. Plus
- 3:19Speaker 3: we've got several other things of the news I want
- 3:21Speaker 3: to get to. But as always, your calls and text
- 3:24Speaker 3: are welcome to Biguarly Piguli Wiggly hotline three zero four
- 3:27Speaker 3: three four five fifty eight fifty eight. Tony of Taylor
- 3:30Speaker 3: text three zero four nine three five five zero zero waight,
- 3:33Speaker 3: as we are pleased to have her from time to time.
- 3:36Speaker 3: She is with us right now talking about doctor Casey
- 3:39Speaker 3: Sachs of Bridge Valley to give us an update on
- 3:41Speaker 3: some things going on at one of the fine sponsors
- 3:43Speaker 3: of the show, Doctor Casey Sacks. Welcome to the show
- 3:46Speaker 3: and early I guess Mary early Christmas or early Mary Christmas.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Right, Thank you, James, Good morning, Merry.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Christmas to you too, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and all
- 3:54Speaker 3: the stuff that goes along with I want to spend
- 3:56Speaker 3: a little time doctor Sachs talking about healthcare training Bridge Valley.
- 4:00Speaker 3: There is now a radiology technology program available at Bridge Valley,
- 4:05Speaker 3: and you're about to get into what I understand the
- 4:08Speaker 3: biggest paramedic and nursing programs ever in the new year.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 4:13Speaker 5: Yes to all of the things. WVU Medicine Thomas Hospital
- 4:18Speaker 5: asked for a rad tech program. They said, we really
- 4:21Speaker 5: need to hire people and can you please figure this out.
- 4:24Speaker 5: So we brought in somebody who has thirty years of
- 4:28Speaker 5: experience in the field. It's a partnership with WVU Medicine
- 4:31Speaker 5: Thomas Hospital. They're paying half the salary for our faculty.
- 4:35Speaker 5: So it's a really terrific partnership because it allows us
- 4:38Speaker 5: to hire somebody who's really good and has all of
- 4:40Speaker 5: that industry experience who can train folks up. We'll be
- 4:44Speaker 5: doing all the hands on training right at the hospital
- 4:47Speaker 5: here in town, and that's been a huge help because
- 4:50Speaker 5: it's meant that we didn't have to buy things like
- 4:53Speaker 5: X ray machines that can be very costly. So it's
- 4:56Speaker 5: a terrific partnership. We're really excited for our students. It
- 4:59Speaker 5: means get to train on the actual equipment that they'll
- 5:02Speaker 5: end up working with and so we're very excited about that.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Have had lots of interest from the community, and we'll
- 5:10Speaker 5: start running our first students in the spring.
- 5:13Speaker 3: And I understand as part of this because you know,
- 5:16Speaker 3: the fifteen year old boy in me. Anytime that I
- 5:19Speaker 3: read notes and I read press releases, I just go,
- 5:22Speaker 3: you know, into a total comedic frame of mind. Mannequins.
- 5:28Speaker 3: You under you got new mannequins. How did I not
- 5:32Speaker 3: get this job? Doctor Sachs.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Yeah, so the fifteen year old boy, and you should
- 5:36Speaker 5: come visit them. You might remember and your listeners might
- 5:39Speaker 5: remember that we have a nursing wing here at Bridge
- 5:42Speaker 5: Valley that is a simulated hospital that students in healthcare
- 5:46Speaker 5: settings can do a lot of their clinical experiences in
- 5:49Speaker 5: a simulation. So we want that simulation to be authentic.
- 5:52Speaker 5: So we've always, at least as long as I've been around,
- 5:55Speaker 5: we've had mannequins that can do things like give birth,
- 5:57Speaker 5: which is pretty incredible. These new ones, Dave, you wouldn't
- 6:01Speaker 5: believe it. They have age spots on their skin, every
- 6:05Speaker 5: hair follicle looks real. I went in and saw the
- 6:08Speaker 5: three new ones who we have, and they kind of
- 6:10Speaker 5: creep you out because it seems like you have a
- 6:12Speaker 5: person asleep in your hospitaling.
- 6:16Speaker 3: That's as I said, doctor Sex, you just got to
- 6:19Speaker 3: kind of look over me sometimes because that's that's just
- 6:21Speaker 3: where my mind goes. And the fund I would have
- 6:24Speaker 3: with mannequins and put them into different positions. But in
- 6:27Speaker 3: all seriousness, these things that you're talking about, with the
- 6:31Speaker 3: healthcare trainings of various types that you have a bridge Valley,
- 6:34Speaker 3: none of these things would be possible if you did
- 6:37Speaker 3: not have the partnerships that you have with groups like
- 6:40Speaker 3: and I'm just going to mention a few like WVU
- 6:42Speaker 3: Medicine and CAMC, which you kind of alluded to that
- 6:45Speaker 3: a little bit earlier. Without those folks, none of this
- 6:47Speaker 3: is possible.
- 6:48Speaker 5: It's true. Both hospitals in the area are phenomenal. CAMC
- 6:51Speaker 5: has been a wonderful partner. We couldn't do our clinical
- 6:54Speaker 5: rotations without them. Each healthcare provider has played such a
- 7:00Speaker 5: role in letting us grow the programs. And I think
- 7:02Speaker 5: to your first point, we're really seeing that in enrollment
- 7:05Speaker 5: that are Spring enrollment for both our nursing class and
- 7:08Speaker 5: our paramedic class have never been this big before. We're
- 7:10Speaker 5: seeing eighty people start the paramedic program in the spring,
- 7:14Speaker 5: which is unheard of, and we're so excited because there's
- 7:16Speaker 5: just such a critical need in the community.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Talking again with doctor Casey Sachs of Bridge Valley, it
- 7:21Speaker 3: is nine to fourteen to day Valance Show and five
- 7:23Speaker 3: any live brownsh you departed by Pinnacle Consultants. They're lead
- 7:26Speaker 3: Paint Inspection and Risk Assessment services are designed to identify
- 7:30Speaker 3: to assess the presence of lead based paints and buildings
- 7:32Speaker 3: and other structures using a three phase approach of inspection, sampling,
- 7:36Speaker 3: the lab analysis, and assessment report and more of Visit
- 7:39Speaker 3: Pinnacle Corp dot net because what you don't know can
- 7:42Speaker 3: hurt you. And anytime that you're on the show, you're
- 7:44Speaker 3: on with me a couple of times, doctor Sacks, we
- 7:46Speaker 3: talk about we spend a lot of time talking about
- 7:48Speaker 3: things that you do for the healthcare community and turning
- 7:50Speaker 3: out folks that are they're sorely needed in West Virginia
- 7:55Speaker 3: for a variety of reasons, not the least of which
- 7:58Speaker 3: is the fact that West Virginia is the oldest in
- 8:00Speaker 3: the nation and with that comes health issues. You know,
- 8:03Speaker 3: to get these people trained and they put in the
- 8:05Speaker 3: hospitals or health care facilities we buy and large. We
- 8:08Speaker 3: have a very very blue collar workforce, which leads to
- 8:11Speaker 3: a lot of injuries and things of that nature. So
- 8:14Speaker 3: it's very important that we get these students trained up
- 8:18Speaker 3: and get them out there on the front lines.
- 8:20Speaker 5: It's true, and we really believe in healthcare as a ladder.
- 8:24Speaker 5: So when you talk to folks in the industry, they say,
- 8:27Speaker 5: you know, even when you're young, be a sixteen year
- 8:30Speaker 5: old paramedic and then move on from being a paramedic
- 8:34Speaker 5: like we've seen Senator Chakubo do. He started out as
- 8:37Speaker 5: a paramedic and we've seen what's happened in his career trajectory,
- 8:41Speaker 5: and so we really see that that's possible for people.
- 8:44Speaker 5: And we have some great examples right here in our
- 8:46Speaker 5: community of people who have been able to start out
- 8:48Speaker 5: in healthcare and really work their way up, and we
- 8:51Speaker 5: want that for all of our students in the region.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Doctor Casey Sachsbridge Valley. Before we let you go, this
- 8:56Speaker 3: will be the final time you and I will be talking.
- 8:58Speaker 3: In the year twenty twenty four, I put a bow
- 9:00Speaker 3: on no pun intended on the year that was twenty
- 9:03Speaker 3: twenty four for Bridge.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Valley Oh my gosh, it's been such a great year.
- 9:07Speaker 5: You know. I was just looking at our outcome numbers
- 9:10Speaker 5: and we've grown forty three percent since I started in
- 9:13Speaker 5: twenty one. This has been a great year. I've got
- 9:16Speaker 5: a phenomenal team in place. We have some really solid
- 9:19Speaker 5: programs for students. I think healthcare, IT and manufacturing have
- 9:23Speaker 5: all been banner programs for us. And we are so
- 9:26Speaker 5: proud of the workforce that we're able to turn out
- 9:28Speaker 5: for the Kanaw Valley.
- 9:30Speaker 3: And I'll give you the final, as I've been doing
- 9:32Speaker 3: a lot of my guests, my regulars on the show,
- 9:34Speaker 3: I'll just give you the final thirty or forty seconds
- 9:36Speaker 3: or so just to say whatever you want, what's on
- 9:38Speaker 3: your mind as it relates to the holiday season, Wishing
- 9:41Speaker 3: folks some merry Christmases and happy holidays and do all
- 9:44Speaker 3: the stuff.
- 9:44Speaker 5: Go ahead, doctor, It's true, you know, I've seen with
- 9:47Speaker 5: so many of my students this can be a really
- 9:49Speaker 5: magical time of year and sometimes a really sad time
- 9:52Speaker 5: of year for families, depending on circumstances. And I just
- 9:56Speaker 5: I hope that folks go home and give somebody they
- 9:59Speaker 5: love it hug and that they really have a wonderful
- 10:02Speaker 5: holiday season.
- 10:03Speaker 3: All right, doctor Casey Sachs, it's always a pleasure. Hit
- 10:06Speaker 3: up that website again for.
- 10:07Speaker 5: The folks, it's Bridge Valley dot edu.
- 10:10Speaker 3: All right, have a happy holiday season. We'll talk to
- 10:12Speaker 3: you in the new year. Looking forward to it. Thanks
- 10:14Speaker 3: a lot.
- 10:14Speaker 5: Thanks Dave, take care.
- 10:16Speaker 3: You as well. Nine to seventeen. But Dave Island showing
- 10:19Speaker 3: five Dyeline branch you apart by your hometown baseball team,
- 10:21Speaker 3: the Charleston Dirty Birds as the Selango law Light the
- 10:24Speaker 3: Night will continue through the holiday season over at Gomart Ballpark.
- 10:28Speaker 3: You can check out the Dirty Birds on Facebook for
- 10:30Speaker 3: details and get your tickets early if you're going to
- 10:34Speaker 3: be going out. They had a one night. They had
- 10:36Speaker 3: eleven thousand people there that came through the turnstiles. If
- 10:40Speaker 3: you will at Gomart Ballpark this past Saturday night, I
- 10:42Speaker 3: think it was Friday or Saturday. It's over the weekend,
- 10:45Speaker 3: and it was the biggest single night that they've had,
- 10:48Speaker 3: their biggest single event that they've had there. So if
- 10:51Speaker 3: you are going ahead of time, kind of cut down
- 10:52Speaker 3: on the wait a little bit. Just get your tickets
- 10:54Speaker 3: ahead of time. Go to the website Dblightthnight dot com.
- 10:58Speaker 3: dB Light the Night dot Com. I got a text
- 11:02Speaker 3: here from TJ Meadows, who is and I don't care.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I don't think he would care for me throwing this
- 11:07Speaker 3: out there. TJ, of course, along with Dave Wilson, will
- 11:09Speaker 3: be taking over in the new year the hosting duties
- 11:12Speaker 3: for talk Line. TJ said, I think we're actually short
- 11:15Speaker 3: of person or two to backfill the goat. As I said,
- 11:18Speaker 3: it takes two people to replace Hoppy Kerchival. He's right,
- 11:22Speaker 3: It's gonna take a whole lot more because people don't
- 11:26Speaker 3: realize the things that Hoppy Kerchival does behind the scenes.
- 11:29Speaker 3: You know the guy on talk Line, you know the
- 11:31Speaker 3: guy in the Mountaineer coverage, you know the guy that's
- 11:33Speaker 3: on three Guys. You don't know the other stuff that
- 11:36Speaker 3: Hoppy Kerchival does. I told this story when I was
- 11:40Speaker 3: setting in for Coop on Hotline with Weekly yesterday. One
- 11:43Speaker 3: of my best Hoppy Kerchival stories only happened a couple
- 11:46Speaker 3: of years ago, and Hoppy was in town covering the legislature.
- 11:50Speaker 3: A few of us, myself included, were over at the
- 11:53Speaker 3: Conlo Seman Convention Center gearing up for the Reds Caravan,
- 11:56Speaker 3: and we had a massive apartment fire. You remember the
- 11:57Speaker 3: big apartment fire we had in Charleston couple of years ago.
- 12:01Speaker 3: First person on the scene, or one of the first
- 12:03Speaker 3: people to uh to to to, as we say in
- 12:06Speaker 3: the business to cut up the audio was Hoppy Kerchival.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Once a news guy, always a news guy, and that
- 12:13Speaker 3: always stuck out to me. Here's the guy who is
- 12:17Speaker 3: the most powerful broadcaster in the history of the state
- 12:21Speaker 3: of West Virginia and still at the top of his game,
- 12:24Speaker 3: which she's still at the top of his game now
- 12:25Speaker 3: as far as I'm concerned, and he sees the need,
- 12:28Speaker 3: he sees that we're a little short staff because we're
- 12:30Speaker 3: covering other things. And you know, back in the old days,
- 12:33Speaker 3: I would have say he grabbed his tape recorder, but
- 12:35Speaker 3: he grabbed his phone and a legal pad and went
- 12:38Speaker 3: out there and covered it. Was doing live updates. That's who.
- 12:42Speaker 3: That's who Hoppy Curchival is. Tex says, so Hoppy is
- 12:46Speaker 3: retiring and being replaced with MAGA man Dave, that's Dave
- 12:50Speaker 3: Wilson they're referring to, and AEP employee TJ. Meadows. Sounds
- 12:54Speaker 3: like talk line will be about MAGA issues and how
- 12:57Speaker 3: AEP is the best and can't really do anything about
- 13:00Speaker 3: rising prices. So here's your rate hike. Be happy. Well,
- 13:03Speaker 3: let me give you a little info on mister Meadows.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Mister Meadows is retiring from that role, so at no
- 13:08Speaker 3: time will at no time will he be an employee
- 13:12Speaker 3: of AEP's best to understand it and also of WVRC Media,
- 13:16Speaker 3: so the two will not I can't speak for Dave Wilson.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Dave Wilson, it's far from being a MAGA guy. I
- 13:22Speaker 3: can tell you that, Texas, Dave. I listened to the
- 13:25Speaker 3: show yesterday. On the podcast, you said you'd be getting
- 13:28Speaker 3: into the CEO shooting. I didn't hear anything beyond shooting
- 13:30Speaker 3: rich people's bad Editor's note it is or anybody for
- 13:34Speaker 3: that matter. No discussion people building generational wealth by denying
- 13:38Speaker 3: their countrymen the health care they paid for. No discussion
- 13:41Speaker 3: of the amount of resources used to catch this guy,
- 13:44Speaker 3: as poor people's murders left unsolved. I appreciate you illuminating
- 13:48Speaker 3: the media's complicity in the two tiered system that's for
- 13:51Speaker 3: the wealthy and everywhere else. All I said was is
- 13:54Speaker 3: that if you are a person, in my opinion, that
- 13:58Speaker 3: is glorifying the death of this. You are a terrible,
- 14:01Speaker 3: terrible human being. That's all I said. My opinion. Nobody
- 14:05Speaker 3: else Texas Dave, You and t J are both wrong, copies,
- 14:09Speaker 3: irreplaceable he is he is. Two guys are gonna step
- 14:15Speaker 3: into that role. But if you think you're gonna replace
- 14:17Speaker 3: Hoppy kerchfall not gonna Happen's could be a totally well.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I say, look, I don't want to give away too much.
- 14:23Speaker 3: I'll let them do that. It's going to be talk line,
- 14:26Speaker 3: but it's gonna be a little bit different because you
- 14:27Speaker 3: have different personalities. I took over for the show for
- 14:30Speaker 3: the Great Danny Jones in twenty twenty, and the show
- 14:33Speaker 3: that I do is not what the show the Danny
- 14:35Speaker 3: Jones did and the show that he did the people
- 14:37Speaker 3: he took over, it's totally different. It takes on the
- 14:39Speaker 3: personality of the host. Texas Dave. We went and saw
- 14:42Speaker 3: the Light the night and yes, it's a beautiful but
- 14:44Speaker 3: way overpriced and if you wanted to do anything extra inside,
- 14:47Speaker 3: the cost was absolutely outrageous. For us. It was a
- 14:51Speaker 3: one and done and I've talked to many people who
- 14:53Speaker 3: have said exactly the same thing. It's just sad, says
- 14:56Speaker 3: a textor well, certainly entitled to your opinion. I know
- 14:59Speaker 3: the folks that are in charge of that listen to
- 15:01Speaker 3: the show on a daily basis. So duly noted Dave
- 15:05Speaker 3: Dave Allen showing five Adie Live has brought to you

- 18:56Speaker 3: does that mean for the business sector in West Virginia.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Brian Dayton and Kaylen George are here from the West
- 19:01Speaker 3: Virginia Chamber of Commerce. We're going to get into several
- 19:03Speaker 3: things with him. Welcome to the show, Brian. I'll start
- 19:06Speaker 3: with you, since you're the veteran here, I'll start with you.
- 19:09Speaker 9: Well, Dave, it's absolutely great to be here in awesome
- 19:11Speaker 9: new studio. I think this is the first time I've
- 19:13Speaker 9: been on since you've moved into the new location.
- 19:15Speaker 3: And this is only the transition studio because the new
- 19:18Speaker 3: studio is actually going to be where the old studio was.
- 19:20Speaker 3: This is kind of the trend, but it is. It's
- 19:22Speaker 3: kind of cool, it's little cozy.
- 19:24Speaker 9: And it is You'll have to have me back there
- 19:26Speaker 9: so I can no right, I.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Don't need you because I've got Kaylen George. How are you, Kalen?
- 19:31Speaker 10: Hey, good morning.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Thanks for having Caitlyn tell everybody knows Brian Dayton and
- 19:35Speaker 3: what he does. He his old news. Let's talk about you,
- 19:37Speaker 3: and let's talk about what you do with the organization.
- 19:40Speaker 10: Hey, I like the way you put things. I'm Kaylen George,
- 19:44Speaker 10: director of Communications for the West Virginia Chamber and happy
- 19:47Speaker 10: to be here this morning.
- 19:48Speaker 3: It's so great to have I and Brian and I
- 19:49Speaker 3: are actually great for it's my lunch buddy over here.
- 19:52Speaker 3: You're turned by by the.
- 19:53Speaker 9: Way, Ah, fine, I'll mark it down.
- 19:55Speaker 3: It's actually not I just wanted to see if I
- 19:57Speaker 3: could get that by you. All right, So, guys, I
- 20:00Speaker 3: had current a Senate Finance Chair Eric Tarr and the
- 20:03Speaker 3: show yesterday, and he's quite optimistic, as are others, that
- 20:07Speaker 3: even more economic developments and announcements are going to be
- 20:10Speaker 3: coming to the Mountains, to the Mountain state of the
- 20:12Speaker 3: new year. The state's economic development authorities meeting today. As
- 20:16Speaker 3: a matter of fact, just kind of a major generic
- 20:21Speaker 3: question here your thoughts on the future of West Virginia
- 20:25Speaker 3: as we move into twenty twenty five. Bryan, I'll start
- 20:27Speaker 3: with you. Sure.
- 20:28Speaker 9: So, we have seen some really awesome announcements come into
- 20:31Speaker 9: West Virginia over this year, the past several years, and
- 20:35Speaker 9: that's been giving us some good reason for optimism. What
- 20:39Speaker 9: I would say is though, that we cannot take our
- 20:41Speaker 9: foot off the gas pedal when it comes to West Virginia.
- 20:43Speaker 9: We just actually today in our office we're discussing the
- 20:47Speaker 9: employment numbers that just came out for November. Right now,
- 20:50Speaker 9: as it looks, we're probably going to end twenty twenty
- 20:53Speaker 9: four with fewer jobs than we had in twenty twenty three.
- 20:56Speaker 9: I'm not trying to go ahead and send everybody off
- 20:58Speaker 9: on a bad Christmas spirit. Christmas, yes, but it's in
- 21:02Speaker 9: our view something that we have to remember. We have
- 21:05Speaker 9: to keep focusing on workforce, better education, more access to childcare,
- 21:10Speaker 9: and those things that are going to go ahead and
- 21:12Speaker 9: enable more businesses to come here, to grow those who
- 21:15Speaker 9: are already here to continue doing well and expand their
- 21:18Speaker 9: operations and get more people into West Virginia. You know,
- 21:22Speaker 9: one of the one of the key things that we
- 21:24Speaker 9: have been watching over the number of years is domestic migration.
- 21:28Speaker 9: Now these that's people moving from state to state. We've
- 21:31Speaker 9: been positive on that for a few years now, not
- 21:33Speaker 9: by a Laura, but we have been positive. But our
- 21:36Speaker 9: population has continued to declimb because we've continued to have
- 21:38Speaker 9: more deaths than births.
- 21:40Speaker 3: And we're old yeah, I mean old state. It's a
- 21:43Speaker 3: hard state.
- 21:44Speaker 9: So those are things. So I do think there is
- 21:46Speaker 9: room for optimism. But I also would just say when
- 21:50Speaker 9: our policymakers are convening in February for a sixty day session,
- 21:54Speaker 9: we have to keep the eye on the ball. We
- 21:56Speaker 9: have to keep focusing on jobs and economic development and
- 21:59Speaker 9: bacon making this a better place to live, work, and
- 22:02Speaker 9: raise a family.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Talking to Brian Dayton and Kaylin George from the West
- 22:06Speaker 3: Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Guys, I was reading that you
- 22:09Speaker 3: folks developed a new redesigned website and it recently won
- 22:14Speaker 3: a coveted award. Kaitlin, I'll let you, Kaitlin, I'll let
- 22:16Speaker 3: you talk about that.
- 22:18Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 22:19Speaker 10: Yeah, we were really excited. We were extra busy this
- 22:22Speaker 10: summer rolling out a new website as at the same
- 22:25Speaker 10: time as the business summit. It was made here right
- 22:27Speaker 10: in West Virginia by West Virginia designers, and it's something
- 22:30Speaker 10: that we're really proud about. It recently did win a
- 22:33Speaker 10: national design award from Graphic Design USA, and this was
- 22:37Speaker 10: we designed a new website with the goal to better
- 22:40Speaker 10: service our members and the business community at large.
- 22:43Speaker 3: What is it that made this website so highly awardable
- 22:47Speaker 3: for lack of better I mean, what was it that
- 22:49Speaker 3: won the award for you?
- 22:50Speaker 10: Yeah, I think that we had a great team of designers.
- 22:53Speaker 10: There's so much talent right here in West Virginia. You
- 22:55Speaker 10: really don't have to go anywhere else. But some of
- 22:58Speaker 10: the new features that we rolled out an interactive resource center,
- 23:02Speaker 10: advocacy tracking legislative updates, business education. It's really a one
- 23:06Speaker 10: stop shop for the business community.

- 23:24Speaker 3: I want to go back to a couple of big
- 23:26Speaker 3: events that you all are known for. Your big event,
- 23:30Speaker 3: of course, is the Business Summit, which is held each
- 23:32Speaker 3: summer into summer August right Wednesday, Thursday, Friday before Labor Day, Okay,
- 23:37Speaker 3: always always the same down at the Greenbrier. And you
- 23:40Speaker 3: also had a Women's Summit as well. Talk about these
- 23:43Speaker 3: talk about these recent events that you guys put on.
- 23:45Speaker 3: I say, racing those last couple of months, but we
- 23:47Speaker 3: can still talk about it, so go ahead.
- 23:49Speaker 10: Yeah, the Business Summit and the Women's Leadership Summit. This
- 23:53Speaker 10: year we both had record breaking numbers from attendance to sponsorships,
- 23:57Speaker 10: to the number of speakers and investments, and it really
- 24:01Speaker 10: was just incredible to see it unfold throughout the year.
- 24:04Speaker 10: At the Business Summit, of course, we had the governor,
- 24:06Speaker 10: governor elect, we had the Canadian ambassador, both US senators,
- 24:10Speaker 10: Representative Carol Miller, and over two dozen influential businesses that
- 24:15Speaker 10: were showcased on the maiden stage talking about their investments
- 24:18Speaker 10: and contributions to the state's economy. There really is a
- 24:22Speaker 10: buzz in the year at the Greenbrier during the Business Summit.
- 24:25Speaker 10: It's become a catalyst for business growth and economic development news.
- 24:29Speaker 10: So that's something we're really proud of. And the Women's
- 24:32Speaker 10: Leadership Summit. I might be a little biased, but I
- 24:35Speaker 10: think it's one of our best events of the year.
- 24:37Speaker 3: It was she the one that put it on. Was
- 24:39Speaker 3: she the main person behind it?
- 24:41Speaker 9: She and Kathy Thomas a phenomenal job of putting out
- 24:44Speaker 9: They just leave you out, you know, yeah, all right,
- 24:47Speaker 9: good do other things.
- 24:48Speaker 10: Yeah yeah, Kathy's the one who actually initiated it, and
- 24:51Speaker 10: I was so happy to be on board and work
- 24:54Speaker 10: on the event as well. And again it had over
- 24:57Speaker 10: five hundred attendees, bringing women leaders together from across West Virginia,
- 25:02Speaker 10: including CEOs, professionals, students, and public servants. We do a
- 25:07Speaker 10: philanthropy project each year. This year it was for YMCA
- 25:10Speaker 10: summer camps across the state of West Virginia. So we
- 25:13Speaker 10: got a couple of hundred summer camp bags for kids
- 25:17Speaker 10: going to those camps. So we were really proud about it,
- 25:21Speaker 10: and we can't wait for this year, little plug. We
- 25:24Speaker 10: have our Women's Leadership Summit coming up March twenty fifth
- 25:28Speaker 10: and twenty six.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Okay, where is that hell.
- 25:31Speaker 10: That is at the Greenbrier.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Okay, Okay, we'll have you on before them to talk
- 25:35Speaker 3: about that.
- 25:36Speaker 9: Go ahead and brin, you know, and I'm just going
- 25:37Speaker 9: to add on about especially with the business Summit, it's
- 25:40Speaker 9: really just been neat to watch that event grow year
- 25:43Speaker 9: after year. But one of the things I heard a
- 25:46Speaker 9: couple of years ago is one of our attendees said,
- 25:47Speaker 9: I can get more done in three days here at
- 25:50Speaker 9: this event than I can get done in eight months
- 25:52Speaker 9: on the telephone, just calling.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Telephones and emails. Yeah, it's the ultimate networking event for
- 25:56Speaker 3: businesses in West Virginia. We're proud to be a part
- 25:58Speaker 3: of it as well. And I'm I guess Hobby won't
- 26:01Speaker 3: be there. He may be there. Hobby is not going
- 26:03Speaker 3: away totally.
- 26:05Speaker 9: That was some pretty big news yesterday, and so it.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Could be myself, could be TJ or mister Wilson, because
- 26:12Speaker 3: it could be Bobby Spray, you know, one of our
- 26:15Speaker 3: people for most airs. You never know. Let's talk about
- 26:19Speaker 3: the launch of something that you call the twenty first
- 26:22Speaker 3: Century Competitiveness Agenda. What is this?
- 26:25Speaker 9: So this is really what we listen to our members
- 26:28Speaker 9: and find out from them what do they need to
- 26:30Speaker 9: continue moving West Virginia forward. What do they need to
- 26:32Speaker 9: grow and become more capable to provide more jobs, more
- 26:36Speaker 9: opportunity in the state. So just going back to what
- 26:38Speaker 9: we kind of opened the show with talking about West Virginia,
- 26:41Speaker 9: the reasons for optimism, but needing to keep the foot
- 26:44Speaker 9: on the gas. This is the plan, this is what
- 26:46Speaker 9: we've come together and some of the real key points workforce,
- 26:51Speaker 9: better education, more childcare. Just to go ahead and remind people,
- 26:56Speaker 9: west Virginia is forty ninth in workforce participation, were fiftieth
- 27:00Speaker 9: and then Mississippi actually jumped in and got underneath of us.
- 27:04Speaker 9: But that's a real concern for us because that workforce
- 27:08Speaker 9: participation that counts the people who are currently employed, and
- 27:11Speaker 9: it also counts the people who were unemployed but on unemployment.
- 27:15Speaker 9: But after a certain period of time, if you're not
- 27:17Speaker 9: on unemployment and you're not employed, you just drop out
- 27:19Speaker 9: of the workforce altogether. And so really looking to go
- 27:23Speaker 9: ahead and boost that up. We are significantly behind the
- 27:26Speaker 9: US average, I mean, almost seven eight points behind the
- 27:29Speaker 9: US average on workforce participation.
- 27:31Speaker 3: But we're think, let me jump in. I think it's
- 27:33Speaker 3: very important when you talk about workforce participation. And I've
- 27:37Speaker 3: talked about how West Virginia is the oldest state in
- 27:39Speaker 3: the nation. You've got to make a distinction here, Brian
- 27:41Speaker 3: and calin because this is what we call able body people,
- 27:45Speaker 3: not of retirement age, you know, not our seasoned citizens
- 27:50Speaker 3: as Rustling Ball used to call them. Not them, We're
- 27:52Speaker 3: talking about able body people that should normally be able
- 27:55Speaker 3: to work.
- 27:57Speaker 9: Yes, okay, yeah, And just to go ahead, and what
- 28:01Speaker 9: that definition really does, to get real technical, it's basically
- 28:04Speaker 9: anybody over sixteen who's not institutionalized. So yes, what I
- 28:08Speaker 9: would say is our older population does play into that
- 28:11Speaker 9: number a little bit, but that's not everything that's playing
- 28:13Speaker 9: into it. We can't sit there and blame our low
- 28:15Speaker 9: workforce participation solely on that. So what do we blame
- 28:18Speaker 9: it on you know, I think it's been we've seen
- 28:21Speaker 9: a changing economy in West Virginia. I think we've seen
- 28:24Speaker 9: a lot of jobs that were very traditional that have
- 28:26Speaker 9: gone away, and we haven't been able, we haven't looked
- 28:29Speaker 9: in the past to diversify ourselves to get ready for that,
- 28:32Speaker 9: and so that's been something that's been a big push.
- 28:34Speaker 9: I've been very encouraged to see the different types of
- 28:37Speaker 9: businesses that we've been recruiting into West Virginia because I
- 28:40Speaker 9: think that diversity in our economy is going to be
- 28:43Speaker 9: very very important, so that that way, whenever a particular
- 28:46Speaker 9: sector has a bad year, it doesn't have as big
- 28:48Speaker 9: of an impact on the state.
- 28:51Speaker 11: You know.
- 28:51Speaker 9: One of the other keys that we're really looking at
- 28:53Speaker 9: is childcare. We have a lot of people in West
- 28:55Speaker 9: Virginia right now who could be working if they could
- 28:58Speaker 9: have access to a four ortable, high quality childcare. It's
- 29:01Speaker 9: a major issue in West Virginia. Three quarters of our
- 29:04Speaker 9: members are telling us it's a it's a major issue
- 29:07Speaker 9: for them in attracting and retaining workers. So those are
- 29:10Speaker 9: some of the things we're looking at, and how do
- 29:12Speaker 9: we help address that issue and move us through.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Is this going to be the year. And I know
- 29:17Speaker 3: you don't have a crystal ball, Brian and Klem, but
- 29:20Speaker 3: what we have a new legislature coming in, well, I
- 29:22Speaker 3: mean some of the We have new leadership at least
- 29:25Speaker 3: on in the Senate as as Randy Smith is going
- 29:29Speaker 3: to be the new Senate leader. We know that the
- 29:31Speaker 3: double and Hanshaw will continue in the House, but we
- 29:33Speaker 3: have some new delegates coming in. We have as far
- 29:38Speaker 3: as our constitutional officers office holders, all but one are
- 29:42Speaker 3: going to be new, including a new governor. Is when
- 29:45Speaker 3: are we going to get serious about this? In your
- 29:47Speaker 3: opinion in West Virginia. I don't mean to put you
- 29:49Speaker 3: on the spot, better mean, but you're probably echoing what
- 29:51Speaker 3: I'm saying. When are we going to get serious about
- 29:54Speaker 3: what a crisis that we have here in West Virginia
- 29:57Speaker 3: when it comes to childcare. Don't even get it started
- 29:59Speaker 3: on the foster care system, but they sometimes the two
- 30:02Speaker 3: do kind of overlap. I mean, is it time that
- 30:05Speaker 3: we start to get serious about this?
- 30:06Speaker 9: So I'm optimistic. You know, the House has actually, in
- 30:10Speaker 9: coordination with the Senate for the past years, developed a
- 30:12Speaker 9: childcare task Force. They are meeting regularly. We've been a
- 30:15Speaker 9: part of some of those meetings looking at what are
- 30:17Speaker 9: the solutions to move forward. Five years ago, getting legislators
- 30:21Speaker 9: to talk about this issue is next to impossible. Now
- 30:24Speaker 9: it's one of the main topics. And we've been pleasantly
- 30:27Speaker 9: surprised by some of the people serving in the legislature
- 30:30Speaker 9: who are now saying, hey, this is one of the
- 30:32Speaker 9: top issues. And we wouldn't have always expected that, but
- 30:36Speaker 9: we're very pleasantly surprised. Money is going to be an
- 30:39Speaker 9: issue in this I mean, you're not going to be
- 30:40Speaker 9: able to fix this issue without putting significant resources into it.
- 30:44Speaker 9: So we are encouraged. Right now, we are optimistic. This
- 30:49Speaker 9: issue has built year after year after year. Like I said,
- 30:51Speaker 9: five years ago, getting people to talk about this was
- 30:54Speaker 9: next to impossible. Now it's probably one of the first
- 30:56Speaker 9: things people are bringing up when they're discussing what needs
- 30:59Speaker 9: to be done in Ust Virginia.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Before we let you go, you've released something called the
- 31:03Speaker 3: Campaigns for Jobs Digest. What exactly is that, Kalen, Yeah.
- 31:08Speaker 10: The Campaign for Jobs Digest. It basically is an economic indicator.
- 31:14Speaker 10: It took West Virginia and it looked at us versus
- 31:17Speaker 10: all the other states and sixty one key factors. It
- 31:20Speaker 10: offered a detailed look at the state's business climate, highlighting
- 31:23Speaker 10: our strengths and areas for improvement, and just going on
- 31:27Speaker 10: what Brian said, you know, we're lucky at the Chamber
- 31:30Speaker 10: to be supported by a membership who wants a healthier,
- 31:33Speaker 10: better educated, and more prosperous West Virginia. And so we're
- 31:36Speaker 10: really forward to working with everyone this legislative session. And
- 31:40Speaker 10: I do have to make one correction. The women's leadership
- 31:42Speaker 10: some is actually March twenty sixth and twenty seventh at
- 31:45Speaker 10: the Greenbrier.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Okay, that's quite a right, I said, I'm going to
- 31:48Speaker 3: have you folks on before that events talk about it.
- 31:52Speaker 3: So Brian, it's always a pleasure to have you on
- 31:54Speaker 3: a show. Caitlin, welcome in your first time. You said
- 31:56Speaker 3: this was your first radio interview, right, Well, you knocked
- 31:57Speaker 3: it down the part you do have some experience thought,
- 32:00Speaker 3: be honest, I mean in the communications and media feel.
- 32:03Speaker 10: Yes, I do have a news background on, but this
- 32:05Speaker 10: is my first radio interview. Thank you so much for

- 37:13Speaker 3: been on with me of course several times, kind of
- 37:15Speaker 3: stepped away from the microphone for a while, but he
- 37:18Speaker 3: he and mister Wilson will be taking over the big

- 37:25Speaker 3: texted about TJ's relationship with AEP. TJ's listening this morning,
- 37:31Speaker 3: and he sent me a text and I appreciate that,
- 37:36Speaker 3: and it says, your listener deserves an answer on my
- 37:38Speaker 3: relationship with AEP. As of year's end, I will have
- 37:42Speaker 3: retired from AEP officially and will have liquidated any financial
- 37:46Speaker 3: interest I have in the company. I will not shrink
- 37:48Speaker 3: from covering the company or any of its regulatory filings
- 37:51Speaker 3: in West Virginia or elsewhere that would affect West Virginians,
- 37:55Speaker 3: just as I will for other utilities or companies that
- 37:57Speaker 3: do business here. It's also fair to say I am
- 37:59Speaker 3: pro business, as I'm a pro business individual who is
- 38:03Speaker 3: also pro fossil fuel, having worked in the natural gas industry,
- 38:06Speaker 3: as well as pro alternative energy, having seen that model
- 38:11Speaker 3: make financial sense. When it comes to energy, economics will
- 38:14Speaker 3: always rule the day. That's the best way to allocate

- 38:20Speaker 3: am his spokesperson now, and I say that the tongue
- 38:25Speaker 3: in cheek. I don't mind to do it at all.
- 38:28Speaker 3: Tech says, have any of your phony law and order
- 38:32Speaker 3: you or any of your phony law and order Republicans, Okay,
- 38:35Speaker 3: not a Republican that strike one talked about how former
- 38:39Speaker 3: County commission Steve DeWeese got a very lenient plea deal.
- 38:43Speaker 3: He uses fraud to steal four thousand dollars, which should
- 38:45Speaker 3: be a felony, but he can plead to a misdemeanor.
- 38:48Speaker 3: Republicans are tough on crime unless it's one of them.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Make sure you let Crybaby Tar and Tony Hodge know
- 38:53Speaker 3: their soft on crime policies allow crime to run rampant
- 38:57Speaker 3: in Putnam County. Well, the very idea that crime is
- 39:00Speaker 3: running rampant in Putnam County is kind of a stretch.
- 39:03Speaker 3: I mean, I live in Putnam County and have been
- 39:05Speaker 3: for ten years. Crime is far from running rapid. Now,
- 39:08Speaker 3: as for the Dewicise plea deal, I'm not an attorney.
- 39:12Speaker 3: I don't know anything about that. I know he was
- 39:15Speaker 3: accused and basically put in a plea that doesn't really
- 39:20Speaker 3: have to admit guilt per se. Again, I'm not an attorney,
- 39:23Speaker 3: but that's what he that's what he did. And now
- 39:27Speaker 3: I was going to actually talk about this a little
- 39:28Speaker 3: bit later on. It's up to It'll be up to
- 39:30Speaker 3: the Putnam County Executive commission because Steve Dewese, former sheriff
- 39:35Speaker 3: and county commissioner, did resign his position and vowed he
- 39:38Speaker 3: would not he would not seek any more office in
- 39:43Speaker 3: the future. And so now the Putnam count Executive Committee
- 39:47Speaker 3: will have to choose the replacement because the two remaining commissioners,
- 39:52Speaker 3: both Republicans and he Skidmore and Brian Ellis, were unable
- 39:55Speaker 3: to reach a decision as to a due a point.
- 39:57Speaker 3: So now it goes back to the executive Committee. There
- 40:02Speaker 3: are twenty one names, I think, and Aaron Parker, by
- 40:04Speaker 3: the way, he's got a story posted about a WV
- 40:06Speaker 3: Metro news dot com. There is a story posted about
- 40:09Speaker 3: it about the whole process that the Executive Committee, of
- 40:12Speaker 3: which full Disclosure I used to be a member no
- 40:14Speaker 3: longer a member, will then choose and then send those
- 40:18Speaker 3: back to as Harvey Payton talked about on the show
- 40:21Speaker 3: last hour, almost like a jury situation, where they will
- 40:24Speaker 3: send the list back to the two commissioners skid Moore
- 40:27Speaker 3: and Ellis, and then they will strike until they can
- 40:29Speaker 3: finally reach a decision. I don't think that there's somebody
- 40:32Speaker 3: again who's very close to all these people. I don't
- 40:34Speaker 3: think there's a whole lot of discourse, to be honest
- 40:36Speaker 3: with you, I think it's just they're trying to get
- 40:37Speaker 3: the right person for the job, and you've got twenty
- 40:40Speaker 3: one people that have shown an interest in that particular job.
- 40:45Speaker 3: So we'll see what happens here again. Aaron Parker's got
- 40:48Speaker 3: a story posted about it at wv metronews dot com.
