- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Thursday.
- 0:15It is the 6th of the 6th and we're reading Ecclesiastes 6.
- 0:23But I assure you that is all just a coincidence.
- 0:26Because this is the day that God has made for us.
- 0:30And on this day, you and I have gotten together and we have
- 0:33decided, you know what? Rather than flicking on Netflix
- 0:37or turning on the radio or looking at the sky, we are going
- 0:43to dive into God's Word together.
- 0:44Because that's what we do, friends.
- 0:46And I'm delighted, delighted that you've chosen to spend this
- 0:50time with me as you and I will crack open the book of
- 0:54Ecclesiastes once more and we will read the 6th chapter
- 0:58together. Now, if you've started at the
- 1:01beginning and you're still going, well done.
- 1:02Some people really do find this book oppressively depressing and
- 1:07difficult to get through and just give up and say, I don't
- 1:10know what's going on with this. But there are moments of hope in
- 1:13there, right? There are moments in the midst
- 1:15of all of the why do we do this? What is the purpose of all this?
- 1:20Our teacher, the author, sees God and sees God's generosity
- 1:27and God's provision and says, you know what, that's enough.
- 1:31That is enough. So we will continue to read, and
- 1:35this will round out the first section of the book, and we will
- 1:38continue next week with the rest of the book.
- 1:41But As for now, let us read together Ecclesiastes chapter 6.
- 1:57There is another serious tragedy I've seen under the sun, and it
- 2:01weighs heavily on humanity. God gives some people great
- 2:06wealth and honour and everything they could want, but then it
- 2:09doesn't give them the chance to enjoy these things.
- 2:12They die and someone else, even a stranger, ends up enjoying
- 2:16their wealth. This is meaningless, A sickening
- 2:20tragedy. A man might have 100 children
- 2:24and live to be very old, but if he finds no satisfaction in life
- 2:29and doesn't even get a decent burial, it would have been
- 2:33better for him to be born dead. His birth would have been
- 2:37meaningless and he would have ended in darkness.
- 2:41He wouldn't even have had a name, and he would never have
- 2:46seen the sun or known of its existence.
- 2:50Yet he would have had more peace than in growing up to be an
- 2:54unhappy man. He might live 1000 years twice
- 2:58over but still not find contentment.
- 3:01And since he must die like everyone else, well, what's the
- 3:05use? All people spend their lives
- 3:08scratching for food, but they never seem to have enough.
- 3:13So a wise people really better off than fools to Poor people.
- 3:17Gain anything by being wise and knowing how to act in front of
- 3:20others. Enjoy what you have rather than
- 3:24desiring what you don't have. Just dreaming about nice things
- 3:28is meaningless, like chasing the wind.
- 3:33Everything has already been decided.
- 3:36It was known long ago what each person would be, so there's no
- 3:41use arguing with God about your destiny.
- 3:43The more words you speak, the less they mean.
- 3:47So what good are they and the few days of our meaningless
- 3:51lives? Who knows how our days can best
- 3:55be spent? Our lives are like a shadow.
- 3:58Who can tell what will happen on this earth after we are gone?
- 4:13Jesus, that we would have contented hearts, that we would
- 4:18look around at the things in our lives with gratitude and not
- 4:23long for the things that we don't yet possess.
- 4:28I pray that you would give us this blessing.
- 4:32Shape our hearts, give us wisdom, as the author of
- 4:37Ecclesiastes speaks of. Then in each moment of each day,
- 4:42we can find peace and gratitude for all that we have been given.
- 4:48Our Lord, you know we live in a world where everything shafts at
- 4:52us. You need more, You should have
- 4:54more. You should be faster, better,
- 4:57different. And here we hear your word that
- 5:01says we are enough as we are. We have enough in what we have
- 5:08for so many of us. We are so blessed with more than
- 5:11what we need. Give us your deep satisfaction,
- 5:16not just in these things, but in you, our ultimate satisfaction
- 5:21that fills the deepest needs of our hearts.
- 5:25We come before you and we worship you, our mighty King and
- 5:30our deep satisfier, all in the name of Jesus, Amen.
