- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37Paul was saying I am already being poured out, I've already
- 0:39given everything. I've given all to the Lord ever
- 0:43since the day that he caught me into ministry back in Acts
- 0:47Chapter 9 when he first stopped me on the road to Damascus.
- 0:51From that point on, I've given it all to him, I've given it all
- 0:55to him. And that is such an inspiration
- 0:57for us to look at how we serve the Lord.
- 1:00Do we? Give it all to him, do we Give
- 1:02it off to them? Do we hold something back
- 1:04because in that cup for the drink offering, the whole idea
- 1:06was that totally empty the cup. I like to hear compliments,
- 1:10don't you? I don't really care for
- 1:12criticism. I know that I could lose a few
- 1:14pounds. I know that I can stand to lay
- 1:16off the sweets a bit. But isn't it good to have people
- 1:20in your life who tell it to you? Straight people who won't
- 1:23sugarcoat the truth. In his message today, Pastor
- 1:27Lewis warned you about Bible teachers who just tell you
- 1:30everything that makes you feel good about yourself.
- 1:33The Word of God should challenge you.
- 1:35It should convict you of sin, and it should push you towards
- 1:38holiness. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the
- 1:41Book of Second Timothy, Chapter 4, with today's edition of
- 1:45Living Waters of Grace. He says, and the words should
- 1:49convince or convict or correct. It should rebuke and it should
- 1:54exhort. Every time one of us comes up
- 1:58and teach this word, one of those three things should be
- 2:01happening. It should either correct us.
- 2:07It should either exhort us or encourage us or should warn us
- 2:12or caution us. But the word should always have
- 2:16impact is what Paul is saying. The word will always have
- 2:19impact. And this is to be done with
- 2:22long-suffering and teaching, or in other words, patience.
- 2:25Paul is talking about patience because he understands that as
- 2:29Timothy, as you speak to your congregation, everyone is not
- 2:35going to be at the same place spiritually.
- 2:38So people will need to be. You will need to be patient
- 2:42because people are going to mature at different levels.
- 2:46As we mature at different rates, we're going to mature
- 2:49differently. So, Timothy, be patient, but be
- 2:53patient through teaching. Don't always want to just call
- 2:58somebody out. Let the word change people,
- 3:01Timothy. So do it through teaching.
- 3:04Let the word help people to mature.
- 3:08That's the importance of teaching the Word with patience.
- 3:11And then he said for the time will come when they will not
- 3:14endure sound doctrine. And that's why you should teach
- 3:16the Word now, Timothy, because there's going to be a time when
- 3:19there's going to be people who will not want to endure sound
- 3:21doctrine. There will be a time when people
- 3:23will want to not hear a word that convicts them.
- 3:27They're not going to want to hear things that will hold the
- 3:30mirror up to their lives and cause them to be able to see
- 3:33what they look like or what we look like.
- 3:36They might not want to hear that, Timothy, after a while,
- 3:38they're not going to want to hear about righteousness.
- 3:41They're not going to hear about holiness.
- 3:43They only want to hear, you know, they're going to be
- 3:45looking for people who are only teach the, you know, the
- 3:47goodness of God or the mercy of God or the grace of God or the
- 3:50love of God. They don't want to hear people
- 3:53that's going to teach about the holiness of God and the law of
- 3:56God or the righteousness of God. They're not going to want to
- 3:59hear that. I want to hear people talk about
- 4:02sin, things that I want to do. Don't call it sin.
- 4:09That word sounds so bad when you call it sin, but it's things
- 4:12that I want to do. They don't want to hear that,
- 4:15Timothy. So preach the word because
- 4:18they're not going to hear sound doctrine.
- 4:19But because of but, but but according to their own desires,
- 4:24because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves
- 4:28teachers. They'll just listen to the
- 4:30teachers, Timothy, that they want to hear the ones that's
- 4:33going to make them feel good when they leave every time.
- 4:36They'll never hear about things that I need to change in my life
- 4:39or or never hear a word that convicts me or challenges me
- 4:43about things that I'm doing or things that I'm thinking about
- 4:45the way that I'm treating people about my unforgiveness.
- 4:48They don't want to hear a word that challenges that.
- 4:51They want to hear something that just makes them feel good, that
- 4:54just makes them feel good, something that just motivates
- 4:57them, you know, 5 steps to acquire, you know, to acquiring
- 5:00wealth, 5 steps to a good marriage, 5 steps to, you know,
- 5:04to, to really being able to excel in business, 5 steps to
- 5:08making myself a better person. Hear things like that instead of
- 5:13the things that the Bible teaches us about change, about
- 5:16holiness, about the things the Bible teaches us about
- 5:19obedience. They're not going to hear that,
- 5:22Timothy. And then they said they're going
- 5:24to turn away their ears from those things.
- 5:25They're going to turn away their ears from the truth.
- 5:27And they're going to turn to fables, turn aside to myths, to
- 5:31fables, to turn aside to things that are not lined up with the
- 5:36word of God. Turn aside to prosperity
- 5:40teaching or turn aside to, you know, it being OK to live with
- 5:45somebody or turn aside to those things that say everybody's
- 5:48going to heaven. You know, turn aside to teaching
- 5:51like that because it's easier for them to listen to as opposed
- 5:56to being challenged through the word.
- 5:59But then in verse 5, he says, but you Timothy, so he's
- 6:02switching gears here, Timothy. That's what they that that may
- 6:05be what they want to hear. That may be where the false
- 6:07teachers are. That may be where people were
- 6:10the unbelievers are or people who are being challenged in
- 6:13their faith. That may be where they are.
- 6:14But you, Timothy, as a pastor, I want you, Timothy, to be
- 6:18watchful in all things. In other words, that that that
- 6:23that word means to be sober in all things to be sober.
- 6:29And there's a lot of things that can be intoxicating to us that
- 6:34causes us to not think clearly and a lot of things that causes
- 6:38us to not have self-control. To be sober means to have to
- 6:42think clear and to have self-control.
- 6:44To be sober mean to not be under intoxicating influence.
- 6:49That's what it means to be sober, to think clearly, to act
- 6:52clearly. But there's things out there
- 6:56that we can listen to or things that we allow to get into our
- 6:59hearts that will cause us to not think clearly, that will cause
- 7:04us to not act under self-control, and it causes us
- 7:08to act like we're under the influence.
- 7:10We can be under the influence of bad things.
- 7:13Intoxicating teaching can put us under the influence and cause us
- 7:17to act that way. And he says, Timothy, be careful
- 7:22that. Be watchful, be watchful.
- 7:24The things that you allow to come into your ear gates.
- 7:28Be watchful. Parents, be watchful.
- 7:30The things that come into your kids ear gates.
- 7:33Be watchful the things that come into your eye gates, the things
- 7:36that you allow your eyes to look upon, David said in Psalms 119.
- 7:41Turn my eyes away from empty things because he knows that to
- 7:48look at things that are empty can be intoxicating and it can
- 7:51change you. And he says, Timothy, I want you
- 7:55to turn away from those things. Guard your ear gates, guard your
- 7:59eye gates, guard your heart. For out of it are the issues of
- 8:03life. So, Timothy, be careful and be
- 8:07watchful. Be aware of the things that
- 8:10people were saying around you, the things that people were
- 8:12teaching. Be aware of that.
- 8:14Be aware of the things that you listen to, the things that you
- 8:16read. Be aware of those things.
- 8:20You know, one thing I, I, I love, you know, Pastor Clark is
- 8:23very well read, very well read a lot more well read than I am.
- 8:27And there are books that can sometimes appear to be OK, but
- 8:33once you get into them, you read them, you'll find out that it
- 8:35that it's not that it does not line up with the word of God.
- 8:40It does not. And a lot of times before you
- 8:43even have to open up the book and be exposed to that, Pastor
- 8:47Clark will have known something about it in some degree.
- 8:50I mean, it's amazing how many times that he's been able to
- 8:54hear an author's name or hear a book that has that has come out
- 8:58and he's aware of where that book goes, how that book
- 9:02separates from the word of God. Very well read that way.
- 9:06We have to be careful of those things.
- 9:09That's why it's so much easier to just stick with the word of
- 9:11God. We don't have to worry about it.
- 9:13You know, if I swim in my swimming pool, I don't have to
- 9:16worry about, you know, having to worry about any drop offs or any
- 9:19surprises. You know, if I'm swimming in my
- 9:21own swimming pool, you know, I have to worry about anything
- 9:24that's going to surprise me. You know, I know what's in it.
- 9:27I know what's in my pool, so I don't have to worry about it.
- 9:30But if I'm swimming out there in some place that's open, where
- 9:33anything can have access to me, that can be a problem.
- 9:36That can be a problem. But he said be watchful in all
- 9:38things. Then he says, endure
- 9:40afflictions. And this is another thing that
- 9:42has been consistent throughout Timothy's life and throughout
- 9:45Paul's life as he has endured afflictions.
- 9:49Paul can definitely talk about enduring fictions.
- 9:51Back in Chapter 3, we just talked about the afflictions
- 9:54that he endured over in Antioch and in Iconium and in Lyster,
- 9:59where he actually. Suffered the stoning.
- 10:01That took his life or could have taken or we think that actually
- 10:05did take his life. So Paul knows a lot about
- 10:08enduring afflictions and these are all along with these, you
- 10:11know, the commands that Paul gave to Timothy.
- 10:14The first was preach the Word and the second is be watchful in
- 10:18all things. And now the third here is endure
- 10:21afflictions and endure patiently, not just go through
- 10:24them complaining, not go through them, you know, murmuring, not
- 10:28go through them, you know, with a bad attitude, but endure
- 10:32afflictions, endure it in a way that it brings glory to God.
- 10:36When you go through changes on your job that may afflict you,
- 10:39that may cause some discomfort to your may interrupt the way
- 10:44that you do things on your job. How do you do it?
- 10:46Do you do it with by complaining and murmuring?
- 10:49Do we talk about the boss? Do we, you know, do we get with
- 10:51the water cooler crew and, and put down the people who are
- 10:54making the decisions? Or do we go through it
- 10:57patiently, just trusting the Lord that he will work it out,
- 11:01that he will work it out. That's what makes us different.
- 11:04That's what makes us different. And so he says endure
- 11:07afflictions and then he says do the work of an evangelist, do
- 11:12the work of an evangelist. Now the word evangelist is only
- 11:16mentioned three times in in the Bible.
- 11:18The first time it's mentioned is in the book of of Acts in
- 11:21chapter 21 where he refers to Philip as an evangelist.
- 11:26The next time it's mentioned is over in Ephesians chapter 4,
- 11:30when, when, when, when Paul talks about the gifts that Jesus
- 11:34left with the church and one of those gifts was an evangelist
- 11:39for the purpose of equipping the Saints.
- 11:42And then of course, here in second Timothy chapter 4, he
- 11:46mentions the evangelists or, or, or evangelism.
- 11:51Now evangelism is very important.
- 11:53It's very important to the whole gospel.
- 11:55It's the what they call the pre salvation preaching is what they
- 12:00call evangelism, pre salvation preaching because it's the, it's
- 12:04the word. It's the one that introduces you
- 12:06to the gospel. People were introduced to the
- 12:09gospel through evangelism. And then of course, once they
- 12:11become believers, they are discipled through the word of
- 12:15God and they're learning the doctrines and they're coming
- 12:17here and they're being taught the gospel are coming other
- 12:20churches and are being taught the, you know, how to live the
- 12:23life that they were just birthed into.
- 12:28But the purpose of evangelism is to equip and encourage believers
- 12:31to share the gospel, to share that good news and to live that
- 12:35gospel out. He preaches the gospel and calls
- 12:38for repentance is what an evangelist does.
- 12:41He calls for repentance. He, he causes us or lets us know
- 12:44that we can repent and we can turn from that old lifestyle
- 12:48and, and, and, and anyone who's listening who have not given
- 12:52their hearts to the Lord or not trusted Jesus Christ for your
- 12:55salvation. Repentance is open for you.
- 12:58It's available for you. Evangelism is, is what we're
- 13:02doing right now is just sharing the gospel.
- 13:05Jesus Christ died for your sins and we are all sinners and Jesus
- 13:09Christ died for those sins. He died for those sins and we
- 13:13all are sinners. Everyone of us have sinned and
- 13:16I've come short of the glory of God and that sin will have to be
- 13:21dealt with. The wages of sin is death
- 13:24according to the word of God. That's the wrath that
- 13:27unrepentant sinners have to face is death.
- 13:32But Jesus Christ came and died for our sins.
- 13:36He was buried three days, He laid in the grave, and then he
- 13:41arose. And that gives us our hope for
- 13:45eternal life. Anyone who's listening who have
- 13:49not trusted Jesus Christ for your Savior, you can repent
- 13:54right now. You don't even have to say it
- 13:56out loud. You can.
- 13:56Repent at home. But it's available through the
- 13:59grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
- 14:02So he says, do the work of an evangelist and then he says,
- 14:06fulfill your ministry, fulfill your ministry, finish your
- 14:11ministry. You know, have your ministry,
- 14:13you know, whatever it is that the Lord called you to do,
- 14:17fulfill it. I remember when I was first.
- 14:21Being called to the. Ministry, I personally kind of
- 14:24ran away from it. Actually.
- 14:25I was called from very early age initially, and I definitely ran
- 14:28away from that. And then when I got older, the
- 14:31Lord began to beckon to me again.
- 14:34He began to reach out to me again.
- 14:35And, and, and, and I can remember during the time when
- 14:38different people were, you know, asking about my calling and was
- 14:42talking to me about my calling. And I always ignored the fact
- 14:45that, you know, that I was called to be a minister and
- 14:48definitely did not want to acknowledge being a pastor.
- 14:50I remember when I was being called to be a pastor, I
- 14:54definitely did not want to do that.
- 14:56I, I wasn't a pastor until I came here.
- 14:59Clark is the one that ordained me to be a pastor.
- 15:01Him and the elders that are here, I did not look for that at
- 15:05all. But in fulfilling your ministry,
- 15:10it's acknowledging that call and completing it.
- 15:14And I can remember a phone call that I got from someone who
- 15:18didn't even know what I was dealing with in my heart
- 15:21concerning pastoral work or ministry work.
- 15:24They called me and they gave me a scripture.
- 15:27And today that scripture is still very important to me.
- 15:30It's Colossians chapter 4 and verse 17.
- 15:32And what it says is and say to Archopus, take heed to the
- 15:37ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may
- 15:42fulfill it, that you may fulfill it.
- 15:47That word was so powerful. I actually had to stop the car
- 15:50and pull over because I was, I was tearful.
- 15:53I was tearful because I know that it was the Holy Spirit that
- 15:57was working in my heart concerning that.
- 16:01Couldn't even believe that that person even said that to me.
- 16:04The point of the matter is, is that we have a ministry to
- 16:07fulfill. Each and every one of us do and
- 16:10God wants us to just do we have to fulfill what it is that God
- 16:13has called us to do. And there's someone, you know,
- 16:16there may be someone out there today that God is working on
- 16:19your heart. God is already acknowledging in
- 16:21your heart or you know that the Lord is giving you a passion for
- 16:25something concerning ministry, regardless of what it may be.
- 16:29I would just suggest that you don't ignore it because he's
- 16:33pretty much 100% he's, he's undefeated in terms of getting
- 16:36people to follow him. He that he goes after, it's
- 16:39pretty much undefeated. So I would suggest that if you
- 16:42know that the Lord is tugging at your heart and he's calling you
- 16:46into something, regardless of what it is, doesn't have to be
- 16:48pastoral, doesn't have to be ministry that way, but or
- 16:51teaching ministry, but there's a lot of different ministries.
- 16:54They all, they all, whatever the ministry is, they're all
- 16:58important and they all add to the body of Christ and they all
- 17:02supply at every joint supplies in the body of Christ.
- 17:07So I would just strongly encourage.
- 17:10You to acknowledge that. Call and allow the Lord to do a
- 17:13work in your heart concerning it.
- 17:16And then we go to verse 6 and he says, for I am already being
- 17:20poured out as a drink offering and the time of my departure is
- 17:25at hand. I want to stop there for a
- 17:28second because this is really significant.
- 17:31Paul described himself as being poured out as a drink offering
- 17:35back in the Old Testament, back in the book of Numbers, around
- 17:38chapter 15, the Old Testament priests, when they would give a
- 17:44sacrifice, they would, at the end of the sacrifice, they would
- 17:48pour out a drink offering to the Lord.
- 17:52They would pour out a drink offering on the altar and that
- 17:54would actually be a sign that the service was completed.
- 17:58The offering was given, the service was complete.
- 18:02And Paul now describes himself as being that drink offering
- 18:05that is already being poured out.
- 18:08And he's signifying that. He's symbolizing the fact that
- 18:11his service is complete and he has totally poured himself out
- 18:16to the Lord. Totally.
- 18:18Jesus Christ was a drink offering for us.
- 18:23Jesus Christ was not only the drink offering, He was also the
- 18:26Lamb that was slain. He was the sacrifice and he was
- 18:31the drink offering. When his, when his side was
- 18:33pierced and the blood came out, when he hung on the cross and
- 18:38the blood dripped down, that was him emptying himself as a drink,
- 18:43offering to us, to the Lord for us rather.
- 18:49And Paul was saying, I am already being poured out.
- 18:52I've already given everything. I've given all to the Lord ever
- 18:55since the day that he caught me into ministry back in Acts
- 18:59Chapter 9 when he first stopped me on the road to Damascus.
- 19:03From that point on, I've given it all to him.
- 19:07I've given it all to him. And that is such an inspiration
- 19:09for us to look at how we serve the Lord.
- 19:12Do we? Give it all to him, do we give
- 19:14it off to him? Do we hold something back?
- 19:16Because in that cup of the drink offering, the whole idea was
- 19:18that totally empty the cup so that nothing was held back.
- 19:24And that's exactly what Paul says of himself.
- 19:27Then he says, I've fought the good fight, I'll finish the
- 19:30race. I've kept the faith.
- 19:33Paul says. Just like, just like in the old
- 19:37days of Israel, they fought many battles.
- 19:40They fought many battles as they were on their way to the
- 19:43promised land. And even in our life we fight
- 19:47many battles, but there's only one good fight.
- 19:50There's only one good fight, and that's the good fight of faith.
- 19:55That's the only good fight. Jude said.
- 19:58That we are to contend for the faith or we are to strive for
- 20:01the faith which was once delivered to the Saints, once
- 20:05for all delivered to the Saints. We're to strive for that and it
- 20:09is going to be a battle. Now in this battle are the
- 20:12weapons of our warfare. They're not carnal, they're not
- 20:15Spears, they're not bows, they're not clubs, but they're
- 20:19still mighty through God. It's prayer, it's the reading of
- 20:24the Word, it's the giving of ourselves in ministry.
- 20:28Those are the weapons that we now have that we give to the
- 20:31Lord. And then he says, I finished the
- 20:34race. This Christian race, this
- 20:36Christian battle is a race. This Christian life is a race,
- 20:39and it's not necessarily the one that's rewarded, is not
- 20:43necessarily the one who crosses the finish line first.
- 20:47It's not a race in that way. It's not a race in that way.
- 20:50The idea is to finish, finish. He said I finished the race.
- 20:56He didn't say I won the race. He said I finished the race.
- 21:00And that's what we need to do, is to finish the race.
- 21:03What we've started. Whatever you've started in the
- 21:04Lord, finish it. Finish it, be able to say like
- 21:09Paul, I've I've, I've fought the good fight and I have finished
- 21:13the race and I've kept the faith.
- 21:15I've held on to it. I haven't strayed from it.
- 21:17I haven't gotten off into myths and I haven't gotten off into
- 21:21other wild things. I've kept the faith and he says
- 21:25there's laid up for me a crown of righteousness.
- 21:27Finally there's laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which
- 21:31the Lord, the righteous judge will give to me on that day, and
- 21:35not only to me, but on all those who will love his appearing.
- 21:40And what he is saying here is that there are two crowns.
- 21:44There are two crowns that that people can talk about.
- 21:47The one crown is a, is a royal crown and that's given to the
- 21:51king. We won't get that crown that's
- 21:54given to the king, but the other crown is a victor's crown.
- 21:57And that's the one that we will be rewarded, the victor's crown.
- 22:01And the victor's crown is given to like in the Greek games or
- 22:04the Roman games. It was given to the one, OK, who
- 22:08would run the race well and he would get a reef.
- 22:12If he won the race, he would get a reef and it would be olive
- 22:15leaves or oak leaves that would be on this, this reef, this,
- 22:19this head thing that would go around his head.
- 22:21That would be the reward. Now those things faded.
- 22:24Those things will fade. But the reef.
- 22:26But the, the, the, the reward, the victor's crown that we get,
- 22:31it doesn't fade. It's a crown that does not fade
- 22:34away. And it's not just given to us,
- 22:38but it's given to all who will love his appearing.
- 22:42That is what Paul is looking forward to during his time, his
- 22:47last minutes. He's looking forward to the
- 22:49victor's crown. He knows he has one and pretty
- 22:52soon he's going to be able to have it on his head and he's
- 22:54looking forward to that. He's not looking at his
- 22:57condition, he's looking beyond it.
- 22:59He's not looking at his circumstances and feeling bad
- 23:02about himself. He's looking beyond it and
- 23:04that's where we should be. Yes, things are bad here.
- 23:08Yes, we got challenges here. Yes, things are crazy.
- 23:13But we have a hope. We have a hope we can finish
- 23:19this race. We can keep the faith.
- 23:25We just have to continue to fight the good fight and not let
- 23:29temptation take us out, not let the enemy derail us, not be
- 23:34pulled aside or pulled out of what it is that God wants us to
- 23:37do. Not be convinced to give up and
- 23:40give out. Fight the good fight, finish the
- 23:44race, keep the faith. You've been listening to Pastor
- 23:50Lewis Harrell here on Living Waters of Grace.
- 23:54We're digging into all that Paul shared with Timothy in the books
- 23:57of First and Second Timothy. Timothy was commissioned to do
- 24:01the following fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on
- 24:05eternal life, to which you were also called, and have confessed
- 24:09the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
- 24:14Timothy would be carrying on what Paul had taught him and
- 24:18continuing on in ministry, even though Paul knew that more
- 24:22hardships would come for Timothy.
- 24:24This is the Christian life. It's not glamorous.
- 24:28It's not some celebrity status. It's hard fought, it's gritty,
- 24:33it's unpopular, but it's worth it.
- 24:36Do you believe that today? Are you willing to fight the
- 24:39good fight even at the cost of earthly pleasures?
