- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Wednesday.
- 0:16It is the 10th of July and I don't know how I've done all of
- 0:21these podcasts through the years saying hello friends, when in
- 0:24real life if I meet someone I cannot help the first word
- 0:27coming out of my mouth being Gday.
- 0:29Gday works for morning, afternoon, evening, night.
- 0:33It is the greatest, I guess hello works as well.
- 0:37Hello friends. Good day friends.
- 0:38Good to have your company because here we are.
- 0:41Here we are in the middle of the week and we are continuing to
- 0:46gather together each day at the foot of our Apostle John to hear
- 0:52his words, to hear his recollection as he shares,
- 0:56inspired by the Spirit, these stories of Jesus life.
- 1:01Isn't it wonderful? Isn't it illuminating about the
- 1:05character of our Saviour, about his life, about his mission and
- 1:10what he wants us to know about him?
- 1:13What a treat. And so that is exactly what we
- 1:16are going to do as you and I, friends, as we're going to read
- 1:20together. John chapter 8.
- 1:33Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, but early the next
- 1:36morning he was back again at the temple.
- 1:39A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them.
- 1:43As they were speaking, the teachers of religious law and
- 1:47the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act
- 1:50of adultery. They put her in front of the
- 1:53crowd, Teacher, they said to Jesus, this woman was caught in
- 1:58the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone
- 2:02her. What do you say?
- 2:04They were trying to trap him into saying something they could
- 2:06use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the
- 2:11dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer,
- 2:15so he stood up again and said, all right, but let the one who
- 2:19has never sinned throw the first stone.
- 2:23Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
- 2:26When the accusers heard this, they slipped away 1 by 1,
- 2:30beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the
- 2:34middle of the crowd with the woman.
- 2:36Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, Where are
- 2:40your accusers? Didn't even one of them condemn
- 2:43you? No, Lord, she said.
- 2:47And Jesus said, neither do I go and sin no more.
- 2:53Jesus spoke to the people once more and said I am the light of
- 2:58the world. If you follow me, you won't have
- 3:01to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads
- 3:05to life, the Pharisees replied. You are making those claims
- 3:10about yourself. Such testimony is not valid.
- 3:14Jesus told them these claims are valid even though I make them
- 3:19about myself. For I know where I came from and
- 3:22where I'm going. But you don't know this about
- 3:25me. You judge me by human standards,
- 3:28but I do not judge anyone. And if I did, my judgement would
- 3:32be correct in every respect, because I am not alone.
- 3:36The Father who sent me is with me.
- 3:40Your own law says that if two people agree about something,
- 3:43their witness is accepted as fact.
- 3:46I am one witness and my Father has sent me is the other.
- 3:50Where is your father? They asked.
- 3:53Jesus answered, Since you don't know who I am, you don't know
- 3:58who my Father is. If you knew me, you would also
- 4:02know my Father. Jesus made these statements
- 4:06while he was teaching in the section of the temple known as
- 4:09the Treasury, but he was not arrested because his time had
- 4:13not yet come. Later Jesus said to them again,
- 4:18I'm going away. You will search for me, but will
- 4:23die in your sin. You cannot come where I'm going,
- 4:26the people asked. Is he planning to commit
- 4:29suicide? What does he mean you cannot
- 4:32come where I'm going? Jesus continued.
- 4:35You are from below, I am from above.
- 4:39You belong to this world. I do not.
- 4:43That is why I said that you will die in your sins, For unless you
- 4:47believe that I am who I claim to be, you will die in your sins.
- 4:53Who are you? They demanded Jesus replied The
- 4:58one I have always claimed to be. I have much to say about you and
- 5:02much to condemn, but I won't, for I say only what I have heard
- 5:08from the one who sent me, and he is completely truthful.
- 5:12But they still didn't understand that he was talking about his
- 5:16Father. So Jesus said, When you have
- 5:20lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will understand
- 5:24that I am here. I do nothing on my own, but say
- 5:30only what the Father taught me, and the one who sent me is with
- 5:34me. He has not deserted me, for I
- 5:37always do what pleases him. Then many you heard him say
- 5:42these things, believed in him, Jesus said to the people who
- 5:47believed in him. You are truly my disciples if
- 5:51you remain faithful to my teachings, and you will know the
- 5:55truth, and the truth will set you free.
- 5:59But we are descendants of Abraham, they said.
- 6:02We have never been slaves to anyone.
- 6:04What do you mean you will be set free?
- 6:08Jesus replied, I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a
- 6:14slave of sin. A slave is not a permanent
- 6:18member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever.
- 6:23So if the sun sets you free, you are truly free.
- 6:28Yes, I realised that you were descendants of Abraham and yet
- 6:32some of you are trying to kill me because there's no room in
- 6:36your hearts for my message. I'm telling you what I saw when
- 6:40I was with my father. But you were following the
- 6:43advice of your father. Our father is Abraham, they
- 6:47declared. No, Jesus replied, for if you
- 6:52were really the children of Abraham, you would follow his
- 6:55example. Instead, you were trying to kill
- 6:58me because I told you the truth, which I heard from God.
- 7:03Abraham never did such a thing. No, you are imitating your real
- 7:08father, they replied. We aren't illegitimate children.
- 7:13God himself is our true Father. Jesus told them If God were your
- 7:19Father, you would love me because I have come to you from
- 7:24God. I am not here on my own, but He
- 7:28sent me. Why can't you understand what
- 7:30I'm saying? It's because you can't even hear
- 7:33me, for you are the children of your Father, the devil, and you
- 7:38love to do the evil things he does.
- 7:41He was a murderer from the beginning.
- 7:44He has always hated the truth because there is no truth in
- 7:47him. When he lies, it is consistent
- 7:51with his character, for he is a liar and the father of liars.
- 7:56So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don't believe me.
- 8:01Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin?
- 8:04And since I'm telling you the truth, why don't you believe me?
- 8:08Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of
- 8:12God, but you don't listen because you don't belong to God,
- 8:18the people retorted. You Samaritan devil, didn't we
- 8:22say all along that you were possessed by a demon?
- 8:26No, Jesus said, I have no demon in me, for I honour my Father
- 8:31and you dishonour me. And though I have no wish to
- 8:35glorify myself, God is going to glorify me.
- 8:39He is the true judge. I tell you the truth, anyone who
- 8:44obeys my teaching will never die.
- 8:47The people said, now we know you are possessed by a demon, even
- 8:51Abraham and the prophets died. But you say anyone who obeys my
- 8:55teaching will never die. Are you greater than our father
- 8:58Abraham? He died, and so do the prophets.
- 9:02Who do you think you are? Jesus answered.
- 9:06If I want glory for myself, it doesn't count, but it is my
- 9:11Father who will glorify me. You say he is our God, but you
- 9:16don't even know him. I know him.
- 9:20If I said otherwise I would be as great a liar as you.
- 9:25But I do know him and obey him. Your father Abraham rejoiced as
- 9:31he looked forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad.
- 9:36The people said you weren't even 50 years old.
- 9:39How can you say you have seen Abraham?
- 9:42Jesus answered, I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even
- 9:47born. I am At that point they picked
- 9:52up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hidden from them and
- 9:57left the temple. All our Father, you are a holy,
- 10:13mighty and perfect God, and we stand before you in awe and
- 10:20wonder of all that you are. We are broken people.
- 10:25We are sinful people, our lives are surrounded and filled with
- 10:30sin. Our human nature drives us
- 10:33toward sin, and we just so desperately need rescuing by
- 10:39you. Thank you, Father, that You sent
- 10:42us your Son Jesus, and through Him you told us your truth, Your
- 10:48truth, that You are light and You are love, and that through
- 10:54You there is a way for us to be redeemed and set right and made
- 11:01wholly and pure, to be in Your presence forever.
- 11:07I thank You for the love that drove you to do this for us, and
- 11:12thank you for the generosity that opened your heart to
- 11:15include us in your plan. You are a good, good God our
- 11:20Father, and we are so grateful for all that you've done for us.
- 11:26And thank you for Jesus, for the truth that He spoke, and for the
- 11:32words that we're able to read each day in Your Word to hear
- 11:37what it is that you have to say to us.
- 11:39Shape us, change our hearts, soften us, draw us ever closer
- 11:43to You. And we pray all of this in His
- 11:47name. Ah, man.
