- 0:12If you have a Bible in your hands, meet me in the book of
- 0:15second, Samuel and chapter one. As we begin, a new study in a
- 0:22new book. But I believe it's important to
- 0:27know that although this is a fresh book that we will endeavor
- 0:30to journey through. In the original, Hebrew
- 0:35manuscripts, first and second, Samuel were actually one
- 0:39combined text. It was not seen as two separate
- 0:43books. It was seen as one book, and it
- 0:45wasn't until there was a Greek translation done to 300 before
- 0:50Christ, where these, these two books were were created, or at
- 0:56least the one text was separate and divide it into two and the
- 1:00introduction to second Samuel as you.
- 1:02And I will see a test That reality because there seems to
- 1:05be just the seamless flow from the last chapter in first Samuel
- 1:10to the introduction of this new book.
- 1:12It seems like we don't miss a beat seems like things just move
- 1:16on just fine. And why is that important to
- 1:20know? Because as we begin a new book,
- 1:22we often take the time and the introduction to look at the
- 1:25themes, or the structure, or the flow of thought or the main
- 1:28ideas in that text. And that is not necessarily case
- 1:31with 2nd Samuel. Because, again, originally, it
- 1:33was just One book. So we're just continuing with
- 1:36the same intention that we did in the beginning of 1st Samuel.
- 1:40We're seeing that God has chosen a man to rule and Reign and
- 1:46we're going to continue to Journey with David as he makes
- 1:50his way towards the throne as God leads them towards the
- 1:53throne and all the things in between that are to our benefit.
- 1:58There are many people who are intimidated by the Old
- 2:00Testament, or have a limited view of its value in the
- 2:03Christians life. New Covenant.
- 2:05And all you have to do is see the New Testament commentary on
- 2:08the value of the Old Testament, to realize God's desire for
- 2:12those who are in the New Covenant.
- 2:14It's not just to find Christ as glorious as that is.
- 2:19It's not just to understand the complete picture of Redemptive
- 2:23history. As important as that is, Romans
- 2:26tells us in chapter 15, that there are these things given to
- 2:30us to encourage us, And in 1st Corinthians, we read also in
- 2:35chapter 10 that there are these stories were real.
- 2:39Real stories of real people, real events to warn us to warn
- 2:44us about Sin to encourage Us in Holiness.
- 2:47And so, we have every right according to the Bible, to
- 2:51actually come to David story and glean spiritual principles for
- 2:57us today as we walk with the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 3:00And so as we do with every book as we do with every study, Why
- 3:03don't we just pause and isil or to help us?
- 3:06Especially as we begin a new text.
- 3:08Can we do that? Oh Lord, we thank you for this
- 3:13book. We thank you for how you've
- 3:16taught us through first Samuel and Lord, we trust that you will
- 3:19continue to guide us to know exactly what you've intended to
- 3:22speak to us through these verses today.
- 3:26Lord give us an attentive mind. Give us an open heart.
- 3:30We pray that the spirit of God would rest upon the ministry of
- 3:32the word. And so that it would be
- 3:34delivered in power. And in Clarity and that Lord, we
- 3:38would all leave here, edified our faith.
- 3:42Built up. Lord that you would speak with
- 3:45your Timeless truth into particular areas of our lives
- 3:49today. Lord, let your voice be heard
- 3:52and your voice alone. We submit our Wills to you.
- 3:56We submit our preconceived ideas and we surrender to the
- 4:01authority of the scriptures tonight O Lord.
- 4:04May this be an impartation? I just have knowledge about of
- 4:07Life of life, so that we can live like our master.
- 4:11Aster we ask these things in Jesus name, amen.
- 4:17Where we begin in second. Samuel one is exactly where we
- 4:20left off. The first king of Israel has
- 4:23died. He was brutally killed and War,
- 4:28and we saw the detailed account of his death.
- 4:32And as we're about to find out, David is going to learn of this
- 4:35news. And what this first chapter is
- 4:38all about is his response to the death of his sworn enemy.
- 4:44And as you and I examined that though we won't be able to go
- 4:46through the whole chapter. After just half of it, it will
- 4:49surely challenge us. because the longer you serve the Lord, the
- 4:54more dedicated you are to serving the lord, the more you
- 4:56can assure yourself of enemies in this life Enemies, not just
- 5:02in Satan and his minions enemies through people unfortunately.
- 5:10And perhaps you are familiar with that reality today, perhaps
- 5:13that is completely foreign to you regardless.
- 5:16What we will see today will surely challenge Us in the Lord
- 5:21in verse 1, after the death of Saul, when David had returned
- 5:26from striking down the amalekites David remained, two
- 5:29days and ziklag and on the third day, Behold, a man came from
- 5:33Saul's camp with his clothes, torn, and dirt on his head.
- 5:39And when he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid
- 5:41homage David said, to him where do you come from?
- 5:46And he said to him I have escaped from the camp of Israel
- 5:50and David said to him how did it go tell me and he answered the
- 5:54people fled from the battle and also many of the people have
- 5:57fallen and are dead and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.
- 6:04Then David said to the young men who told him, how do you know
- 6:08that Saul and his son? Jonathan are dead.
- 6:13Remember there was a war between Israel and the Philistines David
- 6:18wanted to apparently join that war on the Philistine size,
- 6:20which was extremely concerning to us.
- 6:23But God providentially leads him away from that and he faces his
- 6:27own issues. Because when he comes back to
- 6:29this town called ziklag where he was staying, it was ransacked by
- 6:32the amalekites. He goes on a rescue mission
- 6:35after he repents before the Lord and seek his guidance God gives
- 6:39him a victory. They rescue their wives, they
- 6:41rescue their children and they had To Zeke lag.
- 6:44And when we see that it comes act as a clock, we might be a
- 6:46little bit concerned because we know ziklag is not where David
- 6:50is supposed to be. That is in the land of the
- 6:51Philistines brother. You're supposed to be in the
- 6:54promised land. What are you doing there?
- 6:57Okay, you've repented and you saw God leads you, mercifully to
- 7:01Victory. So why are you going back to
- 7:03ziklag? There's no reason to be
- 7:06concerned. We have every reason to believe
- 7:09that David is going to either recuperate or is planning to
- 7:13rest. Remember all those days of
- 7:15travel and battle. You can imagine that he was just
- 7:18worn out with his men or it could be.
- 7:22That David is simply waiting. He's waiting to receive report.
- 7:26He's waiting for an announcement of what happened in that battle.
- 7:30We don't know what is going on in, David's heart.
- 7:32But all we do see, is that finally, on the third day,
- 7:37Somebody in the Horizon who seems to be out of breath is
- 7:42making his way towards David and the closer he gets the more
- 7:47David realizes that whoever this messenger is or this visitor is,
- 7:51it's not about good news because he's already showing the signs
- 7:55of grief and of mourning because his clothes are torn.
- 7:59There's dirt on his head and so David is already anticipating.
- 8:04Not so good news. And finally, this man arrives.
- 8:09And when he arrives David asked his whereabouts.
- 8:14Where did he come from? And the man tells him I escaped
- 8:17from the camp of Israel, and look what David says in verse 4.
- 8:21How did it go tell me? Now if you don't have the ESV,
- 8:26does it just say tell me? Or does he say something else?
- 8:30Who has a translation other than the ESV.
- 8:32What does it say? Please tell me.
- 8:35Does it say the same and the King James pray thee?
- 8:38Tommy, same idea. and when you see that, what you understand
- 8:43is, a man who has great concern, David is not just asking out of
- 8:48mere curiosity, David is asking because there is a genuine
- 8:53desire to know the well-being of his people.
- 8:58What a change of heart compared to a man who is willing to go to
- 9:01war against his people. Now, his heart is obviously been
- 9:04softened enough to be so concerned about what happened to
- 9:08his own. And so he asks, please tell me,
- 9:12would you just disclose to me? What has happened in that war
- 9:17and what's so incredible about this?
- 9:18Is that it is a display of his compassion that describes just a
- 9:23glimpse of the quality of this man's love that made him.
- 9:28Effective servant that he was for his God.
- 9:33David here is saying, tell me how did it go?
- 9:36And you're going to see his response when he realizes that
- 9:38Israel has fallen that he obviously really loved the
- 9:44people of God. He really did.
- 9:49And what I appreciate about David's reaction here.
- 9:52At least desire to know what's happening is that it was all
- 9:56before. He was the king of Israel.
- 9:59He's not King yet, he's not there designated leader.
- 10:04In fact, she's a fugitive. In fact, he is, he has received
- 10:07more mistreatment than anything else from his own people.
- 10:11And yet, at the same time, there is this yearning to know, there
- 10:14is this great concern in his heart.
- 10:19And as I look at that, I realize that this man was not motivated
- 10:23to be so concerned because of his responsibilities or his
- 10:26position This man truly had an empathy, there is a sincere
- 10:31interest. There is a compassion that
- 10:34consumed him. There is this longing to have an
- 10:38understanding of the people and their good standing. and when I
- 10:44look at that, I also think about how this corresponds to us as
- 10:48Servants of God, To us who do life with the people of God.
- 10:56What goes on in our hearts? How do we feel about those who
- 11:00belong to Christ? How do we view them?
- 11:06How do we serve them? Not if we serve them, but how
- 11:11because David example, here causes us to think. but if this
- 11:16man can shows such passion as a fallen human being, he is not
- 11:25our ultimate example. Jesus is if you're a part of
- 11:29this church, you know, that on Sunday, we're discovering the
- 11:31suffering servant in Jesus Christ in The Book of Mark.
- 11:35And I am always humbled as I go through, Mark to see the type of
- 11:40servant Jesus was not just this, the Savior that he was the
- 11:44servant that he was and this will resonate with you.
- 11:48My brother, my sister, if you really want to be a servant for
- 11:51the kingdom of God, Jesus shows in so many ways how he felt not
- 11:59just what he did, but how he felt about the people that he
- 12:03served. Can I show you?
- 12:04One example, it's in the New Testament.
- 12:06You're gonna have to go there in your Bibles.
- 12:08It's a Mark chapter 6. And verse 34 Jesus comes to a
- 12:14crowd, a great crowd, thousands of people.
- 12:19And when he shows up on that Shore only to see people
- 12:25littering those Hills. There is an interesting
- 12:29commentary of how Christ felt about these people and some of
- 12:33you are already aware of it in verse 34 of Mark.
- 12:36Chapter 6, when he went ashore, he saw a great crowd and he had
- 12:42compassion on them. he had compassion on them because they
- 12:48were like sheep without a shepherd and he began to teach
- 12:51them many things, many things, When it says he had compassion
- 12:58the word there is extremely intense.
- 13:00It speaks of being moved in the bowels.
- 13:04It's almost as though the pit of his stomach was turning.
- 13:09And it was turning with a tenderness with, with a concern,
- 13:13with an attentiveness, with a desire to alleviate some kind of
- 13:18suffering or harm, that is what he felt before, he served those
- 13:24people before him. And when I look at that, that
- 13:28moves me that really does move me.
- 13:30But what moves me even more is when you just zoom out a little
- 13:32bit and understand the context when you just go back a couple
- 13:36of verses, you see that Jesus did not come to this Shore with
- 13:41the intent of helping thousands of people, he did not come to
- 13:46perform some Evangelistic Crusade.
- 13:49Actually quite the opposite. Now consider this I mean I read
- 13:52it today and I was like Lord I'm so not like you I need you to
- 13:57make me like, you, as I want to serve you.
- 14:01What happens. Look at verse 30 of Mark.
- 14:03Chapter 6, his disciples come back from a missionary journey,
- 14:08preaching and casting out devils, and Healing The Sick,
- 14:11and they were obviously exhausted.
- 14:13And in verse 30, we read the apostles returned to Jesus and
- 14:16told him all that had been done and that was taught and he said
- 14:20to them, come away by yourselves to a desolate place.
- 14:23And rest a while, don't you love that?
- 14:26Come and rest. What a merciful leader, but a
- 14:30compassionate Christ. He saw that these men served
- 14:33them. He saw that they went out and
- 14:36sacrifice much and he says come rest rest is important.
- 14:40Rest is important. For those who tirelessly serve
- 14:42the Lord, rest is important for those who are giving themselves
- 14:45to the kingdom of God. As their first priority.
- 14:47There is appropriate. Need to take some time to rest.
- 14:51We are human. These are vehicles that we have
- 14:54to take care of that. That's not the point, though.
- 14:56He gathers, these men, he goes on a boat he wants to take him
- 14:59on a little Retreat. And so as they go, there are
- 15:02people on the shore that see Jesus and they see where he's
- 15:05going. And so the word goes out and
- 15:08they start following Jesus on the shore as they have their
- 15:11eyes on that boat. What's happening on that boat?
- 15:15They want to go to a desolate Place.
- 15:17Jesus has a plan, he has a little conference set up for his
- 15:21disciples so that they can be rejuvenated again.
- 15:25And what's On the shore. Well, there's a different kind
- 15:28of conference being set up by the people, they want to be
- 15:30ministered to they want, they want to hear from this Jesus and
- 15:34so they come. They beat him to the place and
- 15:37as Jesus arrives. Plans are ruined.
- 15:42Interfered. There is a interference things
- 15:48did not go as scheduled. And you know what I love, Jesus
- 15:52being fully human, truly human. I don't see Jesus being angry.
- 15:57I don't see him complaining. I don't see him sighing and an
- 16:01approaching this group and saying, okay, let's just get
- 16:03this over with It says he had compassion on them, I want to be
- 16:11like Jesus. You know what, I see here and
- 16:14wanted to be like Jesus. I want to have compassion, even
- 16:19if my plans are interrupted. Even if I have been serving the
- 16:25lord and I need a little break. that in his Providence,
- 16:30something happens that what might demand more energy that it
- 16:33would just cause me to be all the more compassionate Isn't it
- 16:38amazing how when we really study the life of Jesus that it really
- 16:42challenges us and the smallest of details of life?
- 16:47I don't know if I would be compassionate after a long
- 16:50Ministry trip, just wanting to get some shut-eye in a nice
- 16:53barbecue with some friends who serve the Lord as well to
- 16:57stumble upon thousands of people. that are not only going
- 17:01to hear teaching, but are going to be catered to But Jesus had
- 17:05compassion. What A Savior, what a servant.
- 17:09And as you think about David's life, we realize here that he is
- 17:14an imperfect example but an example nonetheless, Because it
- 17:18seems like he has this unusual concern for those who are
- 17:22defenseless and lost and needy and that is something.
- 17:27That brings us to another point and the point is this that
- 17:31though he was not yet their designated leader, even though
- 17:34he was a nobody at this time, the qualities of the compassion
- 17:40that he had would make him the worthy candidate to be their
- 17:44leader. We have every reason to believe
- 17:49that as we approach David's life and coming to the throne that
- 17:55God has shown us what his life was before.
- 17:58He was promoted for many reasons, many many reasons
- 18:02because remember God could have just fast-forward everything he
- 18:05was anointed 10-15 years have gone by now.
- 18:08He's on the throne. The Bible does that in First
- 18:10Kings a lot but for some reason with David's life, it wants to
- 18:13draw certain details. Let me give you one reason I
- 18:15believe that. you see the qualities of a man who serve God
- 18:19at the capacity that he was serving in before God gave him
- 18:22more to do before you open greater doors before there was
- 18:26further service And I believe, according to the scriptures, not
- 18:31my own head, that God saw something in David and in seeing
- 18:36something in David drew his heart to David so that he can
- 18:40use them in the way that he used them.
- 18:43Maybe you don't believe me. And so I'll show you a text.
- 18:47It's in the book of Psalms. And it's about David, at least
- 18:50the last part of that psalmist in Psalm 78 and I want you to
- 18:53see something in verse 7 of Psalm 78, It's quite touching.
- 19:01Because in this portion of this Psalm, you read that David was
- 19:05described as a shepherd of actual sheep before he was known
- 19:09as a shepherd of people. That's important and Psalm 78
- 19:15verse 70. Look at this, he chose the Lord,
- 19:19he chose David, his servant and took him from the sheepfolds
- 19:24From following the nursing use, he brought him to Shepherd.
- 19:28Jacob, his people. So he was shepherding the Sheep
- 19:32folds and now he's shepherding Jacob God's people with an
- 19:38upright heart. He shepherded them and guided
- 19:41them with his skillful hand. Do you think David had an
- 19:46upright heart and a skillful hand when he became king?
- 19:49Or before he became king? I don't think it's difficult to
- 19:54answer that. Before David had an upright
- 19:57heart and a skillful hand as the ruler of God's people.
- 20:01David had an upright heart and his skillful hand when he was
- 20:03ruling over Jesse's sheep. And that's important.
- 20:09And the reason why it's important is because even in
- 20:11God's service, many people are only motivated to be devoted and
- 20:17developed in their gifting, in their Ministry, in their
- 20:20service, to the Lord. If the opportunity is right, and
- 20:25if the recognition is to their liking, and what they fail to
- 20:31realize is that those same people God considers us for
- 20:39further service, when he evaluates our affection and our
- 20:43attention to whatever he has put in our lives in the present.
- 20:47Think about that. if you have any doubt that David had a heart
- 20:51of Integrity in a skillful hand than you did not pay attention
- 20:54during 1st Samuel, You see it, sprinkled everywhere.
- 20:58Remember, when David was sent by Jesse to go and to give cheese
- 21:02and bread to his brothers on that.
- 21:04Battlefield against the Philistines where he met that
- 21:06giant providentially. Remember that little detail, he
- 21:09left someone in charge of the sheep before he left.
- 21:13Why would the Holy Spirit? Told us that why?
- 21:17Why is that important? This God wastes his words?
- 21:20No. God wants to show us how he
- 21:24managed the ministry that he had received those responsibilities
- 21:27already had before that day. Where everything changed and his
- 21:30future would never be the same. I know what it's like to be in a
- 21:36place especially early. My faith with big desires and
- 21:39longings to serve the Lord, and the opportunities not there yet.
- 21:44but I had wise counsel, my life who gave very similar
- 21:48instructions that God often evaluates your affection and
- 21:52your attention to what, he's put before you now before he even
- 21:56considers you for further service, David was such a man.
- 22:02He had, he had compassion and concern for God's people.
- 22:05We see that in verse 4. So we come back to our study in
- 22:07verse 5 of chapter 1 of second Samuel.
- 22:10Then David said to the young man, rather diverse for scuse
- 22:14me, And he answered the people fled from Battle.
- 22:18And also, many of the people have fallen are dead and saw and
- 22:21his son. Jonathan are also dead.
- 22:24Now, here's something very interesting, the messenger,
- 22:28highlights the death of Saul and Jonathan And there's a reason
- 22:33for that. The reason is deliberate.
- 22:39And my question is, why do you think that is?
- 22:42Did the Saul have more than one son?
- 22:45He did and so why highlight just Jonathan why bring up sauce?
- 22:49All may seem obvious. He's the king but why Jonathan?
- 22:52When you see that you almost have an insight into this man's
- 22:56motives and David has that kind of inclination as well.
- 23:01So he begins to ask more questions and what we have to
- 23:05understand is though we don't know much about this mysterious
- 23:08messenger, perhaps he knows something about David.
- 23:13Enough to formulate his presentation and the way that he
- 23:17did. We have reason to believe that
- 23:22he knew that Saul and David were enemies.
- 23:26Enemies that wasn't just a private thing.
- 23:29It was known, it was known and all of Israel, but not just that
- 23:34this man, very likely believe the reason why he brings up
- 23:38Jonathan when we asked, why do you think he did it?
- 23:40Actually, why Jonathan. Very good.
- 23:49Jonathan was the primary heir to the throne and so this would
- 23:52have been very good news for for David which brings us to the
- 23:56third point. This man, not only believed saw
- 23:58and David were enemies, not only believed that Jonathan was the
- 24:02primary heir to the throne, but he must have believed or at
- 24:05least expected that David would be the next king.
- 24:10That would sit on that throne. And with all of that taken into
- 24:15consideration as our bird's eye view interprets.
- 24:18The following, this is why it's important to know many portions
- 24:21of scripture as familiar as we can get.
- 24:23With all of scripture that David understood those things, he put
- 24:29the pieces together, and that I'm not guessing that just go a
- 24:33couple chapters later, go to 2nd Samuel for, and listen to what
- 24:36David says, when he retells, the story, at least a part of it and
- 24:40second Samuel for, he says something quite amazing and very
- 24:4410:00. When one told me behold Saul is
- 24:50dead and thought he was bringing good news.
- 24:54I seized him and killed him at ziklag, which was the reward.
- 24:58I gave him for his news. You know what the implication is
- 25:05that this man came with the anticipation of a reward.
- 25:11He was looking to be crowned with some kind of prize for not
- 25:17only being the messenger of this news but also participating and
- 25:22Saul's death. And so as he came, he came with
- 25:27an intention that was for personal benefit and he did it
- 25:31very, very shrewdly. Because as you read and you see
- 25:35how he explains it, he doesn't wear.
- 25:38It seems, as though saw was about Die anyway.
- 25:42And so I kind of just helped him end his misery and I believe the
- 25:46reason why he does that is. So just in case the response to
- 25:49Saul's death wasn't taken, right that he had some kind of excuse
- 25:53anyway, to cover himself up, but because he mentions that he did.
- 25:57In fact, put a hand on saw, maybe maybe Dave, and we get
- 25:59excited about that. And then, and then Adorn him
- 26:02with some kind of gift or position.
- 26:06And so this man is very crafty, very crafty.
- 26:10And as he comes to David, He realizes that the reward that he
- 26:14had thought he would get was not the reward that he thought he
- 26:16would get. Because David's, you want to
- 26:19reward. Here's your reward.
- 26:20You're a dead man. You put your hand on the Lord's.
- 26:23Anointed you touched God's chosen man.
- 26:28You want a reward, huh? Here's your reward.
- 26:31Execute him and they did. And as I look at that, we should
- 26:36be suspicious of this man. And totality I, now question, if
- 26:41that's true, if he came for the reward, I question his rent
- 26:44garments. I questioned him, bowing before
- 26:48David, and trying to show honor and respect to him.
- 26:51Because it seems to be just an embellishment.
- 26:52It just seems to be a whole thing in order for personal
- 26:55gain, David discern, that and then David did something about
- 27:00that. Here's what's amazing about it.
- 27:04There's a wonderful principal here for us, Believers in our
- 27:08service to the Lord, as we seek to serve Lord.
- 27:11And this is so important to understand.
- 27:14Jesus is the greatest and the Greater King.
- 27:19He is the son of David and he is the king that we all serve.
- 27:22He is the perfect King that no King could even come close to
- 27:26the whole point. The main point of Samuel.
- 27:28Second, Samuel first. King second king, is that?
- 27:31No human King. Can rightly govern the people of
- 27:34God, no human King can bring ultimate deliverance and
- 27:37salvation for the people of God. And so as I paired all this, I
- 27:42see David. Yes, but I also see him With a
- 27:46transparency. I want to see Christ as his
- 27:49descendant, as a fulfillment of the lineage of this dynasty
- 27:56here, is this man who calls him. My Lord later on, here's his men
- 27:59pretending to be someone hears. This man pretending to be in
- 28:02service to this King. And here's what we have to
- 28:05consider if David could see right through this guy, if David
- 28:09can discern his true motive, his his actual plan though, he
- 28:13disguised it with humility. Leti that we disguise it with
- 28:17some kind of allegiance to David.
- 28:20He couldn't fool him. He could have fooled David and I
- 28:24read that, and I thought to myself Lord, if this man
- 28:27couldn't fool David, do I think I can fool you Do you do, you
- 28:35understand what I'm saying? Do I think that I can give the
- 28:38Lord something from the external, and he doesn't have
- 28:41X-ray vision to see the internal, he dies.
- 28:45I can't fool God. I can't trick him.
- 28:47No counsel can Avail against the Lord.
- 28:50There's nothing I can do to matter how radical it may seem.
- 28:53You don't know how radical this guy was.
- 28:55He ran four miles, some believe, a hundred miles from the
- 28:58battlefield to this point. That that sacrifice That's
- 29:03serious devotion. But the Lord saw the intent, at
- 29:09least David did, and the Lord sees our intent and all things
- 29:13and Jesus puts an emphasis in the New Covenant, of where our
- 29:16hearts are at. He takes it to a new level of
- 29:19anybody ever. Tells you that the god of the
- 29:21Old Testament is more severe than the god of the new they
- 29:24have in read the New Testament, right?
- 29:28He is gentle, he is lowly. But do you realize that Jesus
- 29:31upholds, a greater standard for righteousness then how he
- 29:35manifested the lawn? The old Adultery is when two
- 29:40people who are not supposed to be together are intimate with
- 29:43one another especially in there when they're in Covenant with
- 29:45somebody else. Jesus is, if you thought about
- 29:46it, you did it. I didn't say the Lord said it.
- 29:51Murder. Murder, when you kill somebody
- 29:54when you actually take their life, anger, unjust.
- 29:57Unrighteous anger is murder in Jesus eyes.
- 30:03And so one of the one of the ways that you and I know as
- 30:05Believers and we praise the Lord, he brings that standard of
- 30:09righteousness. So that every mouth would be
- 30:11shot and that none can say, I am righteous and that we would fall
- 30:15at the foot of the cross and receive his Mercy.
- 30:17But also shows the heart of God. And as we grow in the New
- 30:22Covenant, with the Lord Jesus, here's one hint that you and I
- 30:25are in the right direction and our spiritual maturity.
- 30:27Here it is ready. We are not concerned just about
- 30:30the external but about the internal We Are Spiritual
- 30:35maturity. Doesn't just say, how do people
- 30:37see me spiritual maturity says, what do you see in me?
- 30:40Oh, God. That makes all the difference,
- 30:44and I hesitate sometimes to share these things because not
- 30:48that, I'm afraid to share them, but because people can
- 30:50misunderstand it, and then they leave here, feeling condemned
- 30:53realize that God has given you. And I every resource to not just
- 30:56be victorious, when people see us.
- 30:58But when God sees us in our hearts, and our minds every
- 31:01resource possible, But David here shows that he could not be
- 31:06fooled. And I look at my king, my Lord,
- 31:08my master. And if there's anything in me
- 31:10that says I can fool a more trick him than I am greatly
- 31:12mistaken. But, secondly, what do we see
- 31:15here that this man clearly didn't understand who David was?
- 31:20He didn't know who David was. He thought he did?
- 31:24He thought he did because he thought that in this news, David
- 31:27would celebrate and rejoice. And even maybe bless this man
- 31:32and in fact, they put his head on a chopping block and says off
- 31:34with his head, he clearly missed, Who David was And I'm
- 31:39afraid that that many people who claim to know, Jesus don't
- 31:43really know who Jesus is. Remember those Parables were
- 31:47Jesus with the talents, especially for a man, buries his
- 31:52talent and when the master comes and tells him what he did, he
- 31:55says, I thought you were a severe and Hardman do you
- 31:59remember that? Do you know what the crime of
- 32:01that is? He did not know who his master
- 32:05really was, he didn't. And you and I begin to do things
- 32:11in a certain way and it all begins when we fail to really
- 32:15understand who God is and what he requires of us and there's
- 32:19two pitfalls in that there is legalism, there's legalism some
- 32:24people and and some people perhaps even watching or
- 32:27listening today, you are living according to a standard of
- 32:30righteousness. And I put that in quotation
- 32:32marks, that God doesn't even demand of you.
- 32:36And there are those who are in. Loose living, because they have
- 32:41a different understanding of who Jesus.
- 32:43Is this man got into a lot of trouble and it All Began by him,
- 32:48failing to know, who David really was David was not like
- 32:52those other kings, who would celebrate when there was any
- 32:55obstacles removed for the opportunity of being the ruler
- 32:59of a certain land. That was not Who David Wise, and
- 33:02this man did not see it. And so you and I are in the
- 33:05safest place you and I will know great, blessing, and great
- 33:08protection. When we first understand who God
- 33:11is in the more, we understand who he is, the more we will know
- 33:14of his goodness in our lives. So David asked him, how do you
- 33:18know that they died? How do you know that they were
- 33:21slain and I want to read from verse 52 verse 10 so we can get
- 33:24the complete picture. Listen to this.
- 33:29Verse 6, rather, and the young man who told them said, by
- 33:32chance, I happened to be on Mount gilboa and there was Saul
- 33:36leaning on his Spear and behold the Chariots in the horsemen
- 33:40were closed upon him. And when he looked behind him he
- 33:42saw me and called to me and I answered here I am.
- 33:47And he said to me, who are you? I answer them.
- 33:50I am an amalekite and he said, to me stand beside me and kill
- 33:55me for anguish, has seized me and yet my life still lingers.
- 33:59So I Stood Beside him and killed him because I was sure that he
- 34:02could not live after he had fallen and I took the crown that
- 34:05was on his head and the armor that was on his arm and I have
- 34:07brought them here to my Lord. Here's my question. how many
- 34:15detailed accounts are, we given in the scriptures concerning
- 34:18Saul's death, anybody know, Somebody said, too.
- 34:26Is there two or more? There's actually a total of
- 34:33three including this one. The first one is in 1st Samuel
- 34:3631, we read it last week. What happens we read, according
- 34:40to the writer, Guided by the spirit, that's all died of
- 34:44suicide. He died, a suicide.
- 34:47The second telling of this same story is not in first and
- 34:50second, Samuel is found in first Chronicles chapter 10.
- 34:53And there is a verse there. In verse 14, that tells us
- 34:56another angle to house, all died, and First, Chronicles
- 34:591014. Let me read it to you.
- 35:01This is what we are told. He being solved did not seek
- 35:04guidance from the Lord, therefore the Lord put him to
- 35:07death. The Lord put him to death and
- 35:11turn the kingdom over to David, the son of Jesse.
- 35:15So and first Samuel. 31 Saul kills himself.
- 35:19First, Chronicles, 1014 God. Put him to death.
- 35:23Second, Samuel chapter 1 and amalekite.
- 35:25Kills him. What's going on here and people?
- 35:29Jump up, yes. Contradiction haha, your Bible
- 35:31is filled with errors, calm down.
- 35:33Take a breath, relax. That's not the case at all.
- 35:40We have to understand what's Happening Here.
- 35:42Whenever we see two stories that are told in different ways with
- 35:46different details, we have to do the work to see if we can make
- 35:49some reconciliation and what people have realized with this
- 35:54specific incident is that it is difficult to reconcile all
- 35:57three. It's easy to reconcile first
- 35:59Samuel 31 and First Chronicles 10y, well Saul died by Suicide
- 36:04but it was ordained by God. It's as simple as that.
- 36:06But what makes this a little bit muddy is when this amalekite
- 36:09comes on the scene he says well I was the one who actually
- 36:12actually All them. With that being the situation
- 36:16before us, many have concluded that this amalekite must have
- 36:20been what like like now. Here we are a Bible study and
- 36:26here we are wanting to study the word.
- 36:28And so let me ask you show me the evidence that he is lying.
- 36:34Show me the evidence, not just the simple simple observation
- 36:37that it's different in 1st Samuel 31 than it is here.
- 36:40What is the evidence in the verses that we just read?
- 36:42What are some what are some details here?
- 36:44That seem to put things into question concerning?
- 36:47This man's apparent testimony and if you have something feel
- 36:51free to lift your hand and give you the answer.
- 36:53Yes. Okay, so he happened by chance.
- 37:01Well, that's kind of concerning. What are you doing?
- 37:03By chance strolling around in a war.
- 37:07Seems kind of odd wording there. Isn't it?
- 37:09Good observation? Yes.
- 37:16Yeah. What are you doing in Saul's
- 37:19Camp? You amalekite are the amalekites
- 37:22and Saul on good terms. Well, if you knew first Samuel,
- 37:25there would be no yes, David. David did fight the amalekites.
- 37:33He did early on. It's true.
- 37:47And so that is that is an important detail, but I think it
- 37:50helps to know that there are amalekites sprinkled everywhere.
- 37:52Not just in that particular location, but that is a good
- 37:54observation that the amalekites should have been completely
- 37:57destroyed and we're going to get to that point in a moment.
- 37:59Yes. Ah, very good.
- 38:07Did you hear it? There's another character in
- 38:09this story, there's another character who's on the scene of
- 38:12Saul suicide, who was it? The armour-bearer the
- 38:16armour-bearer was there. So we're going to hold on to
- 38:19that. Yes that's a very very important
- 38:21clue anything else. Yes.
- 38:30Very good. Very good.
- 38:33Did you hear that? Saul wanted to die particular
- 38:37death and the way he wanted to die was not by the hands or at
- 38:40the hands of those who are the enemies of Israel.
- 38:44And so, why would he ask an amalekite to kill him?
- 38:47If there a reason for his suicide was that he wouldn't die
- 38:50at the hands of the enemy very good.
- 38:54Anything else there's still some more clues here.
- 38:56Yes. Very good, very good.
- 39:07And so the observation is this meant tells it as though the
- 39:11Chariots and the men of the Philistines are right at his
- 39:14heels. Assaults heels.
- 39:16Here's my question. If I may take it further, If
- 39:20that was the case, then why do we read in 1st Samuel 31 that it
- 39:23was the next day that the Philistines came and stumbled
- 39:25upon Saul's body if they were right there, if they're pursuing
- 39:29him right at his door? Why does it say that?
- 39:32In the next day, the Philistines came and found the bodies of
- 39:37Saul and his sons something's not lining up here anything
- 39:41else. Before we move on these are
- 39:42great observations. And so, here are the three main
- 39:50ones. Number one, The armour-bearer,
- 39:55the armour-bearer go back to 1st Samuel 31 and notice what
- 39:57happens in verse 5. Remember sauce armor-bearer just
- 40:03kill me, please kill me so that I'm not mistreated by these.
- 40:07These uncircumcised Philistine, 's verse 5 and when his armor
- 40:11bearers saw that Saul was what was dead.
- 40:15He was dead. Now either this is a lie or
- 40:18something is not lining up here. We have every reason to believe
- 40:21that it was true. The armour-bearer saw that he
- 40:23had died, if he had not died, Then between him not dying, this
- 40:30apparent amalekite would have shown up and put him to death,
- 40:34there would have been a conversation and who would have
- 40:36been there the whole time? The armor Bearer and he wouldn't
- 40:38have let that happen. I'm sure.
- 40:40Now, some would say, well, maybe he thought he died and, and so
- 40:44he killed himself, and then the amalekite happened to show up
- 40:47and in saw was still, you know, he was lingering there and so he
- 40:49asked him to be, you know, finished off.
- 40:51But that's kind of stretching it when it says clearly he died.
- 40:54Secondly, as we just heard the Philistines, Right there
- 40:56apparently. That's not the case because we
- 40:59come to verse a what do you see the next day?
- 41:01When the Philistines came to strip this Lane, they found Saul
- 41:04and his three sons. If they were right, there isn't
- 41:06take 24 hours to find the man that you're chasing apparently,
- 41:10apparently so close. We heard again, if Saul suicide
- 41:15was caused not by wanting to be the hands of the enemy.
- 41:17Then why would he request an amalekite to kill him?
- 41:21Especially with his history, with the amalekites, he failed
- 41:25to destroy the amalekites and now he's going to ask an
- 41:27amalekite to kill him. It's questionable.
- 41:32Let me give you one more detail. Notice what the amount guy says
- 41:35in 2nd Samuel and verse 6, by chance, I happened to be amalga
- 41:40ball and there was Saul leaning on his what.
- 41:44Spear. This is a spear.
- 41:47Is that what happens in first? Samuel 31?
- 41:51What is the same first name of 31?
- 41:54In verse 4. Somebody said it the last part
- 41:57therefore saw took his own. What sword?
- 42:00And fell upon it. We have a case before I said,
- 42:05this man is not telling the truth.
- 42:08He was not a soldier in any army that was at War.
- 42:11He might have been those who just kind of lurked during the
- 42:14war so that when there was the slain he jumped on the
- 42:17opportunity to take some kind of kind of possession prizes or
- 42:21some sort and then and get out of there before before there was
- 42:24that search from the The Winning Side.
- 42:27But we also see here is that this man clearly was an
- 42:30opportunist. He realized who saw was he
- 42:33realized, he had his crown in the armlet on his arm and he had
- 42:35this whole scheme in his mind to come before David the soon to be
- 42:40king and to take advantage of the situation to be promoted of
- 42:45some sort. Now, if this was a lie, then
- 42:49think about how tragic it is that this man thought that in
- 42:53his deception he was going to receive some kind of award but
- 42:57in fact his very words would be the sentencing of his own death.
- 43:04No matter how great the opportunity is no matter how
- 43:07wonderful, the door may seem no matter how easy may seem to be
- 43:11accessed, if you just manipulate it a little bit or lie or say
- 43:14something about someone that would remove them from that
- 43:17position and give you a greater chance.
- 43:19I want to tell you in the name of Jesus Christ, you will not
- 43:23succeed. You will not succeed.
- 43:27Your success will be short-lived.
- 43:31And your deception will eventually be exposed if not in
- 43:33this life. And oftentimes it does it will
- 43:35in the time where it will matter, most before God, and His
- 43:38angels, and maybe some people to Proverbs 12 tells us in, you
- 43:43don't have to turn there and verse 19, truthful, lips, endure
- 43:47forever. But lying tongue is, but for a
- 43:51moment, A lying tongue is for a moment.
- 43:55If you are a victim of somebody's lies, if you have
- 43:59been slandered assaulted know, this throughout the Book of
- 44:04Proverbs God has a special discipline for lying and he
- 44:09assured us that lying lips will not go unpunished.
- 44:12He assures us that whatever advancement was made through
- 44:17deception. It's only for a moment.
- 44:21It will not know. Long-term, success, and fruit.
- 44:27That encourages me not to lie and that encourages me when I am
- 44:31a victim of people's lack of Truth concerning me.
- 44:36But there's something else here in the story.
- 44:38Did you catch it? This man identifies himself and
- 44:41who is he He's a what an amalekite.
- 44:44That that part is true. We have no reason to believe why
- 44:47this would be a lie. He was in fact an amalekite and
- 44:52that makes it even more questionable in our case of
- 44:54whether what he is saying is true or not, because the
- 44:57scriptures never ever, ever put the amalekites in a positive
- 45:00light. Always always the amalekites are
- 45:04identified with an Unholy people group and race.
- 45:09They are vicious, they are relentless.
- 45:13And they are the enemies of God's people not just in one
- 45:16generation from generation to generation and when you think
- 45:20about that though there is room for debate whether or not he was
- 45:23telling the truth or not, think about this deeper an amalekite,
- 45:30an amalekite came and saw Saul's dead body took the crown off his
- 45:36head, took the armlet off his arm and brought it before King
- 45:40David. He was the one who Trips.
- 45:43All he was the one who claimed that he had killed him, and if
- 45:47he was alive after this, he would have trumpeted that to his
- 45:51fellow, amalekites. I'm sure all to say what this
- 45:55is. A disgrace for song though.
- 45:57He wasn't alive to feel it. This was a disgrace.
- 46:01This is humiliating. And it carries a crucial message
- 46:06for us. Here's the crucial message.
- 46:08All of this could have been avoided for Saul.
- 46:12If he had just done what God told them to do in first Samuel
- 46:1515 and that was to eliminate all the amalekites He didn't.
- 46:24And just like this amalekite sin in our lives.
- 46:29When God calls us to put it to death.
- 46:32And we failed to do. So, we fail to go to war with
- 46:35it, at least, and allow it to live It will come back to haunt
- 46:40us one day. It will that is God's law.
- 46:44That is just truth from old to new and it is a powerful
- 46:48illustration before us through this amalekite because if you
- 46:54study the amalekites in the Old Testament, what you will see is
- 46:58that the characteristics of these ancient enemies of Israel
- 47:01are shared with our enemy, which is the flesh.
- 47:06I'm telling you it's almost it's almost mirrored.
- 47:09When you look at the amalekites, their behavior, the
- 47:12characteristics that are given. We realize that at parallels
- 47:16almost perfectly with indwelling sin, even in the life of a
- 47:22believer. Who remembers where the
- 47:24amalekites are first mentioned in the Bible.
- 47:29No further further ahead, but good good, good answer.
- 47:36Yes, when Israel left Egypt. And something happened, they
- 47:42were thirsty. God provided a miracle through a
- 47:45rock, which is a picture of Christ, and right there, out of
- 47:49the blue, the amalekites show up once the people experience, a
- 47:53great blessing from God and they did certain things.
- 47:58And there we are told certain things about the amalekites that
- 48:00says something. So powerfully about our war with
- 48:02sent Peter tells us that you and I as Christians war against the
- 48:06passions of the flesh, he says Wars against and I want you to
- 48:10see how the amalekites and the relationship with Israel.
- 48:12Just a brief example. I mean do a whole study in the
- 48:14amalekites and you'll be blown away but here's just one
- 48:17snapshot of how it pertains to our sin and how we go to war
- 48:21with a go to Exodus 17 very quickly.
- 48:23We're almost done here in our study tonight.
- 48:26Look at Exodus 17. Verse 16.
- 48:35This is after Moses and Joshua had victory over the amalekites,
- 48:42they came out of nowhere, they attacked according to
- 48:45Deuteronomy the weak and the vulnerable that's in
- 48:48Deuteronomy, Deuteronomy tells us that the amalekites
- 48:50strategically came for those who are lingering at the end of the
- 48:54line of the Israelites because that's what sin does sin comes
- 48:58to us, most when we are weak. and when we are trailing behind,
- 49:04But they have victory in this battle and then look what look
- 49:07what we are told in verse 16, a hand upon the throne of the
- 49:11Lord, the Lord will have war with amalek from generation to
- 49:16generation. And so, though, they saw though,
- 49:21they saw Triumph, then God assured them.
- 49:26You're still going to battle with this.
- 49:29The amalekites are someone that you're still going to have to
- 49:31deal with. And when you feel like you've
- 49:32dealt with him and one generation, a new generation
- 49:34will rise up and there they'll be again, what a powerful
- 49:37picture of our sin. We feel like we have Victory.
- 49:43It's been a good week, huh? Not a good month.
- 49:47I feel more Christian and ever. Next thing, you know.
- 49:51Temptation comes like a flood. Obeying.
- 49:54The Lord doing great things. In his name, great acts of faith
- 49:58and all for a sudden this Rush of Temptation.
- 50:01He's opportunities to disappoint.
- 50:03The Lord to ruin your reputation for Christ from generation to
- 50:08generation though. You and I are redeemed and
- 50:10praise God that were Redeemed by Grace, still this flesh.
- 50:14According to Galatians, we were told that the spirit in US goes
- 50:17to war with this flesh that we are trapped in until we are
- 50:19glorified forever and ever. And so know this you will go to
- 50:23War until you go to be with Jesus.
- 50:28That doesn't discourage as me that encourages me.
- 50:32And that destroys one aspect of false teaching which says that
- 50:35you can attain Perfection and this life sinless.
- 50:38Perfectionism, where did you get that idea from People believe
- 50:44that you can attain glorification today.
- 50:48I'm not among those who believe that and I am not among those
- 50:51who believe that. That means we can live in sin.
- 50:54I believe that we can have the empowerment of the spirit to say
- 50:57no to sin whenever it presents itself to us.
- 51:00And there is conscious in and sometimes they're unconscious
- 51:03things that happen in our lives. That just spring up and even
- 51:05surprised us just to remind us that we are human.
- 51:09But look at this. Look at verse 14 of the same
- 51:10chapter And the Lord said to Moses, write this as a memorial
- 51:14in a book and recited in the ears of Joshua that I will
- 51:17utterly blot out the memory of amalek from under heaven. yes,
- 51:22you will go to war with amalek from generation to generation,
- 51:25my people but there is a Time coming when I will utterly blot
- 51:30out the memory of amalek And so it is with our sin.
- 51:35There is a day coming and I hope it comes soon.
- 51:40Where sin will only be a memory. And I don't even think what we
- 51:44want to remember it. When were there, not only not
- 51:48only will sin. Be blotted out Temptation when
- 51:50we block, what does that feel like?
- 51:54That the suggestion to sin won't even be there at the opportunity
- 51:57of sin won't even be there that the presence of sin will not
- 52:01even be there. That is, that is the last and
- 52:04final phase of our Salvation justification.
- 52:08What does it deal with the penalty of sin sanctification?
- 52:12We are being saved day by day. What is that deal with the power
- 52:15of sin glorification? What does that deal with the
- 52:19presence of sin? The presence of sin?
- 52:23And I can't wait for the Lord to save us in that sense and he
- 52:26will, he said it with the amalekites and he said it
- 52:29pertaining to our sin. When the Lord Jesus Christ comes
- 52:31to return and redeem his bride. We're almost done.
- 52:35We come back to the last verses here in second, Samuel and verse
- 52:3811. This man tells him about how he
- 52:43assisted and saw suicide. And here's the response, then
- 52:47David and verse 11 took hold of his clothes and toward them.
- 52:51And so that all the men who are with them and they mourned and
- 52:55wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan, his
- 52:58son and for the people of the Lord, and for the house of
- 53:01Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
- 53:06I almost wanted to get into the mind of this in Malachi and
- 53:10think. What was he anticipating when he
- 53:14came to David with that Crown in his head and his hands and with
- 53:18that news on his lips while we know later that he was obviously
- 53:22anticipating some kind of reward and and maybe at least some
- 53:27rejoicing if no reward. Then maybe some celebration
- 53:31because anybody in their right mind would would be happy to
- 53:34know that the person that was trying to kill you is no longer
- 53:37able to kill you. And and perhaps even more than
- 53:41that, that the throne that I've been promised and what I've been
- 53:45hoping for is now more of a possibility than ever before.
- 53:51And to our surprise and very likely to the shock of this
- 53:54amalekite. Instead what you see is a bunch
- 53:58of men Warriors, grown Soldiers with scars and Trauma because of
- 54:04one man who has haunted them for years.
- 54:08Breakdown, like little children. And they weep.
- 54:13And they cry. And I wish I could have seen
- 54:17that man's face in that moment. Like what is going on here?
- 54:24What did I miss something? When I was rehearsing, what I
- 54:26was saying like what these men are just shattered.
- 54:31And that is convicting to me but it's also a teaching lesson for
- 54:35us Believers. Is it not?
- 54:38Because you and I abide by the word of God.
- 54:41And this is our standard and because of the spirit of God
- 54:43dwelling in us, we do not act or react in the same way that the
- 54:47world does. We don't.
- 54:52Christ salvation and the transforming work in US.
- 54:58Purifies particular areas in our lives more detailed than you
- 55:03might think. In the immediate sense.
- 55:05We don't, we don't Rejoice for the same things that the world
- 55:09rejoices over. We don't.
- 55:12You heard it last week, right? This world is losing their minds
- 55:18because they can have easy access to murder babies.
- 55:20You and I are rejoicing and we should, we should continue to
- 55:23pray and seek God, for a total overturn of this vicious ugly
- 55:27demented law. You got two, contrasting
- 55:31reactions to that news of that leak.
- 55:35You and I don't rejoice in the same way that the world rejoices
- 55:38you and I don't grieve in the same way that the world Grieves.
- 55:41We don't, we have a different hope, we have a different
- 55:45perspective. Take it further.
- 55:48I love this. I always reference this.
- 55:50We don't even greet. Not just not just grown and and
- 55:55grief we don't even greet the same way that the world greets
- 55:59didn't Jesus, teach on The Sermon on the Mount.
- 56:03Don't just greet your brothers. The world does that?
- 56:07And so Christ comes and infiltrates every detail of our
- 56:10lives, and it brings him glory and it brings us blessing.
- 56:15And what I see here is a contrast you have this amalekite
- 56:18who was expecting something completely different and what
- 56:21he's getting it's almost alien. It's strange.
- 56:28And there are at least two observations from this, these
- 56:31men grieving. And this is our closing thoughts
- 56:33that relates to us. The obvious one, is that David
- 56:36did not rejoice. That baffles me?
- 56:39It absolutely just baffles me if anybody had the right to have a
- 56:43smirk, at least try. At least you sure he's dead.
- 56:50It was this man. I don't care how hard you've had
- 56:52it in life. You haven't ran as a fugitive in
- 56:55the Chicagoland area because somebody wanted to kill you.
- 56:59If you have, I would love to hear your story.
- 57:02This man did haunted. Mistreated slandered exhausted.
- 57:07One would say the prime years of his life were gone because he
- 57:10becomes king at 30 So you think to yourself how could this man
- 57:15rejoice? And we almost think to
- 57:20ourselves. How could he not rejoice?
- 57:23Maybe he's just a unique character among God's people,
- 57:25maybe he's just someone special and we can look at that.
- 57:27Say what a Godly Man until you come to the Book of Proverbs and
- 57:30you probably, you probably wonder did this writer have
- 57:36David and mind when he wrote it though?
- 57:38He was inspired by the Holy Spirit.
- 57:39Listen to these words just in case again just in case you
- 57:43might think that's David. No wonder.
- 57:45He was a man after God's heart. No wonder God.
- 57:48No wonder God made a covenant with him read and listen to
- 57:51this. And Proverbs 24:17.
- 57:54Do not rejoice when your enemy Falls.
- 57:58And let not your heart be, glad when he stumbles, okay, thank
- 58:03that. That's great.
- 58:04But then you read on less the Lord, see it and be displeased.
- 58:10And turn away his anger from him.
- 58:13That's something else. That's something else.
- 58:18The greatest men of God have had enemies.
- 58:21Jesus had enemies. Paul had enemies, the apostles
- 58:25had enemies, the early church had enemies and their enemies
- 58:27were great and power Governors and emperors.
- 58:33And yet, at the same time, we read here, that whoever your
- 58:36enemy is who intently seeks your harm, that's an enemy when they
- 58:41fall. When they are disciplined, when
- 58:44they are injured, do not rejoice.
- 58:48Do not let your heart be glad. and if God does see that if he
- 58:54sees the sense of arrogance or the superiority, or this
- 58:59malicious satisfaction, Listen to this.
- 59:04If the Lord sees it, he is willing to reduce his anger on
- 59:10the one who was wrong. as a response to our pleasure in that
- 59:16person's discipline, that's significant what's being said
- 59:20there because of the wrong reaction to somebody being under
- 59:25God's Wrath and displeasure He will do something with them as a
- 59:33rebuke to us. That's profound, that's
- 59:37incredible. And I look at that I think well
- 59:42my flesh doesn't like that because I want to know some kind
- 59:46of satisfaction and knowing that you got what you deserve.
- 59:51You've done all this to me when I didn't deserve it.
- 59:55And I hurt you deserve that. And call a couple people and
- 1:00:00tell them about it and celebrate over it.
- 1:00:02When the Lord sees that he is willing, just in order to
- 1:00:05correct us just in order to discipline us.
- 1:00:10To deal with them a little bit more gently, and to lift his
- 1:00:13hand a little bit lighter. As a way of saying, something to
- 1:00:17our hearts that is incredible to me.
- 1:00:20But here's a challenge, of course, because we get, we got
- 1:00:22to look at the totality of scripture.
- 1:00:24Then how do you reconcile, how do you, and I reconcile, the
- 1:00:28Psalms were David celebrates God intervening against his enemies.
- 1:00:33Well, how about Exodus 15, the the Pharaoh, and his chariots
- 1:00:38drown, Under the Red Sea and there's a whole chapter
- 1:00:40dedicated to a song about their defeat.
- 1:00:46Help us. Because we want to walk in the
- 1:00:49ways of the Lord. Anybody have an idea how we can
- 1:00:52reconcile those two realities. Very good.
- 1:00:59There's a fine line between rejoicing when the person
- 1:01:03experiences some kind of misfortune.
- 1:01:08And rejoicing in God's Deliverance.
- 1:01:12That's the difference. That's why we can have a verse
- 1:01:15like this in the scriptures. And then so many other verses
- 1:01:18were seems to give the impression that there is
- 1:01:20celebration over God coming to a man's rescue.
- 1:01:24When he is surrounded by adversaries.
- 1:01:28Because you're not rejoicing over what happened to that
- 1:01:31person who was created in the image of God, you are rejoicing
- 1:01:35in the fact that God had brought about a Deliverance to you see
- 1:01:39the difference. It's not pleasure in the pain of
- 1:01:43somebody else. It's the light in God's
- 1:01:45faithfulness, in your life. I heard of a Preacher, he was
- 1:01:51actually a friend of mine. And I saw a little bit of David
- 1:01:56in him when I sat with him and one afternoon.
- 1:02:00I won't be long here. He had told me very briefly and
- 1:02:04availed way of how he had experienced great.
- 1:02:07Great, persecution from fellow pastors and he obviously didn't
- 1:02:11disclose the details because perhaps it would be too
- 1:02:14unbelievable for me, if I had not experienced it myself, but
- 1:02:18he told me it was enough for him to get on his knees and cry out
- 1:02:22to God in such a desperate ways. And this is his own words, and I
- 1:02:27trust his integrity. Rhea told me he had cried out to
- 1:02:30God and when he had cried out to God, for Mercy, for just wisdom
- 1:02:35for deliverance from this onslaught of whatever was
- 1:02:39happening to him. A few of those ministers
- 1:02:43mysteriously died. They died.
- 1:02:49In a way that didn't make sense to human understanding.
- 1:02:53And I sat there as he said that he didn't even look me in the
- 1:02:56eyes. He looked to the floor and he
- 1:02:59was staring at the floor and underneath underneath his
- 1:03:02breath. He said, I didn't ask God to do
- 1:03:04that. I didn't ask God to do it that
- 1:03:07way. I didn't ask God, and then he
- 1:03:11said, I aged two years and two weeks with that news.
- 1:03:20I said, well boy, I have to go and prepare for the meeting
- 1:03:22tonight and he left on that note.
- 1:03:24I was like I saw David in that, man.
- 1:03:33God delivered him. but he did not rejoice in the fate of those
- 1:03:40Who harmed him? The second observation from
- 1:03:45these men who rent their garments David and his fellow
- 1:03:48soldiers, it's a subtle one, not as obvious as the first one, we
- 1:03:51just heard a subtle one in the principle is found in the span
- 1:03:54of their sorrow. Notice that we are told that
- 1:03:57they wept and fasted and till the evening, until the evening,
- 1:04:01though, their grief was genuine. It was not prolong.
- 1:04:04See we all have different Temptations.
- 1:04:07Even in our emotions. Some are some are more prone to
- 1:04:09be angry. Some are more prone to be proud.
- 1:04:12Someone were prone to be jealous and listen to this summer, more
- 1:04:15prone to be excessively sorrowful. these men were
- 1:04:22genuinely broken, but they, they stop at a certain point and
- 1:04:26David stopped at the evening because he had a duty to fulfill
- 1:04:29and that was to provide Justice on behalf of the king and to
- 1:04:34execute this man who came to confess as a parent murderous
- 1:04:37plot, or at least his happen, by chance idea, his assisted
- 1:04:42suicide and that's important to understand, because with David
- 1:04:47does here, and in the news of Saul's death Says something
- 1:04:51about a healthy view of grieving I don't want to make too much of
- 1:04:56this but I couldn't help but think about David's response to
- 1:04:59Saul compared to another man whom God actually corrected when
- 1:05:03he when he was been sorrowful for too long.
- 1:05:05Who is that man? Very good.
- 1:05:08And first Samuel, 16 one, when Samuel learned that Saul had
- 1:05:12forfeited, the kingdom because of his Disobedience, Samuel goes
- 1:05:16to his room and he stays there, and he just weeps.
- 1:05:19And he Grieves, and God comes in to speak to his prophet.
- 1:05:24And he told him and first, same 061, listen to this, remember
- 1:05:26this, right? How long will you grieve over
- 1:05:29Saul? How long will you grieve over
- 1:05:32Saul since I have rejected him from being King over Israel.
- 1:05:35In other words, it's too much Samuel.
- 1:05:39It's too much. It's time to go.
- 1:05:45And if this is something that you're interested in, come see
- 1:05:49me after the Bible said, I want to recommend a resource to you.
- 1:05:52About when grieving becomes wrong.
- 1:05:56When grieving becomes unrighteous when grieving can
- 1:06:00actually turn into sin. That can help us and help others
- 1:06:04that we know that. I've known great pains in life.
- 1:06:07And let me give you two summary points before we close here, we
- 1:06:11can know at least two flags that are yellow flags or red flags in
- 1:06:17our sorrow one, when we begin to assault attack.
- 1:06:24The character of God. Samuel should have known better.
- 1:06:28Samuel is a prophet as a man of God should have known better as
- 1:06:31he was grieving for Saul. Why?
- 1:06:33Because he had not he had not experienced this for the first
- 1:06:36time. He was a young man, when Eli the
- 1:06:39priesthood had fallen and God pronounced judgment and promised
- 1:06:44something else for the future concerning God's leadership, he
- 1:06:47had seen that and when it came to Saul for some reason, he
- 1:06:51doesn't remember that. And he just he just he loses
- 1:06:54sight of God's sovereignty, he Just sight of God's control over
- 1:06:58Israel and his leadership. And so, when you and I in our
- 1:07:02sorrow, in our pain, and our disturbance, When we begin to.
- 1:07:06Now, look at God and question his ability or question his
- 1:07:10character in a way that accuses them of unfaithfulness were
- 1:07:13being wrong. Then, we know that our grief is
- 1:07:16letting us cross a certain line that we shouldn't have crossed.
- 1:07:19Secondly, when our grief begins to loosen our grip on service to
- 1:07:24God, David stop grieving because David knew he had a duty to
- 1:07:29fulfill and that was to deal with this amalekite and to move
- 1:07:32on and be that leader. That God called them to be
- 1:07:35Samuel. Same idea, God calls him and
- 1:07:38says, Hey listen, fill your horn with oil and go, you can't stay
- 1:07:43like this for too long. You still have a Ministry to
- 1:07:45fulfill, you must get up and get moving.
- 1:07:47There's another king that I have in mind, and it's your job to
- 1:07:49find him out. Call him out, anoint him and let
- 1:07:52him know that I have a plan for him.
- 1:07:55And there are people, I'm telling you who have known great
- 1:07:57grief and Christian circles, they've been harmed by fellow
- 1:08:00Christians so they never show up to church again.
- 1:08:03Leadership in churches have failed him.
- 1:08:04So they vowed to never ever ever, listen to a pastor sit,
- 1:08:08under a pastor, have anything to do with a pastor and all of
- 1:08:12that, no matter how sincere the song, Maybe no matter how real,
- 1:08:16the crime might have been Is it clear or obvious indication that
- 1:08:20that person's grief has turned into Disobedience or at least
- 1:08:24LED them into Disobedience? And so we have to be extremely
- 1:08:27careful of how something as real and as raw as pain as a result
- 1:08:32of something that we brought about in our own lives or
- 1:08:35somebody has caused in our own lives, we have to be very
- 1:08:37Vigilant where it takes us. With the time left and actually
- 1:08:44no. Next week, we will cover the
- 1:08:46fact that David here is going to sing a song.
- 1:08:51Write a song and even share this song with the people of God and
- 1:08:54it is Rich it. Drips with awesome Revelation in
- 1:08:58so many areas of Our Lives as Believers.
- 1:09:01And for now we give thanks to God for what he has taught us,
- 1:09:04as we've come to his word. Louis, thank you for what you've
- 1:09:18taught us in the scriptures. We thank you for this
- 1:09:23introduction to second Samuel one though.
- 1:09:27We pray that. Whatever was spoken.
- 1:09:31Would have landed in good soil. and we pray O Lord that it would
- 1:09:35at least if there is any consequence of this Bible study
- 1:09:38together that it would woo, our hearts Woo, our hearts.
- 1:09:45To the person of Jesus Christ. Lori want to give you all the
- 1:09:48glory and thanks for this family who loves to be in your word.
- 1:09:53But Lord, let the word live through us.
- 1:09:56Let it actually manifest in our words and our thinking, and our
- 1:09:59hearts, and our motives in our dealings with others.
- 1:10:02Lord, we thank you that your word is for us today, we bless
- 1:10:05you, hello. We want to rejoice in you in
- 1:10:07song and Thanksgiving for you. Are the author of this book.
- 1:10:13And you are the God who speaks and we've heard your voice
- 1:10:17tonight. Lord, encourage the
- 1:10:21faint-hearted. Convict the one who is outside
- 1:10:24of your will bind our hearts together in unity.
- 1:10:29Help us be the people that you've called us to be and Lord
- 1:10:32with all of that helped us rest in the saving work of Jesus
- 1:10:35Christ, that Lord all that. We've heard all the challenges
- 1:10:40comes from a place of being accepted at the cross and that
- 1:10:44we are not living. Holy to be accepted by you.
- 1:10:47We are not performing so that we can get heaven.
- 1:10:51Lord, you've paid it all, and we just want to live a life of
- 1:10:54gratitude in light of that great news.
- 1:10:57In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
- 1:10:59But stand and Worship the Lord together, shall we?
