- 0:00Speaker 1: And well we usually catch up with him on a
- 0:01Speaker 1: Monday morning, and we still will on Monday morning. But
- 0:04Speaker 1: we know that Saint John is encouraging graduate and qualified
- 0:07Speaker 1: paramedics across the country to head to the Northern Territory
- 0:11Speaker 1: to work. And joining me on the line right now
- 0:14Speaker 1: is Craig Garaway. Good morning to you, Craig.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Good morning Katie, thanks for having me.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Oh good to have you on the show. Craig. I
- 0:21Speaker 1: know that Saint John is really urging Australian paramedics to
- 0:26Speaker 1: try a change of scenery.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, we've been in a really great position at
- 0:32Speaker 2: the moment. We're recruiting forty five additional parameds over and
- 0:35Speaker 2: above our normal recruitment process over the next nine months.
- 0:40Speaker 2: The Northern Terrectory government's been fantastic in assisting us to
- 0:44Speaker 2: get on top of COVID and our recruiting issues. So
- 0:48Speaker 2: we're looking for people right around Australia to come and
- 0:51Speaker 2: experience the amazing opportunities in the Northern Territory.
- 0:55Speaker 1: So how many paramedics or how many people are you
- 0:57Speaker 1: trying to trying to recruit.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Well, we're looking for forty five over the next nine months.
- 1:03Speaker 2: We've got four recruitment processes to go through, so we're
- 1:06Speaker 2: looking for qualified and graduate paramedics right across Australia to
- 1:12Speaker 2: come to Northern Territory and just experience that's different. So
- 1:15Speaker 2: it's a big campaign for us, one of the biggest
- 1:17Speaker 2: in my thirty three years, and as a great team
- 1:20Speaker 2: getting together at the moment to try and pull all
- 1:22Speaker 2: this work together.
- 1:23Speaker 1: And I know, you know, quite often on this show
- 1:25Speaker 1: we talk about lots of really quite serious incidents and
- 1:29Speaker 1: serious situations, and even this morning we've been talking about
- 1:33Speaker 1: some pretty heavy stuff. But I would imagine that as
- 1:36Speaker 1: a paramedic working in the Northern Territory you really do
- 1:40Speaker 1: experience some pretty different stuff and even some of the
- 1:43Speaker 1: you know, when I think about some of the conversations
- 1:45Speaker 1: you and I have had over over the last few years,
- 1:50Speaker 1: from injuries from bulls, snake bites, all sorts of different
- 1:54Speaker 1: things that your paramedics actually respond to.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yeah, look, it is the unique environment and our paramedics
- 2:02Speaker 2: in the Northern Territory are extremely experienced paramedics and really
- 2:07Speaker 2: desired by other ambulance services because of their varied skills.
- 2:12Speaker 2: So we've got paramedics who have worked with us over
- 2:15Speaker 2: the years and have moved into state and we're hoping
- 2:16Speaker 2: a lot of these guys will move back, but they've
- 2:19Speaker 2: been snapped up by other ambulance services because we give
- 2:22Speaker 2: them such good experience and that unique experience, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 2: crocodile attacks, as you said, you know, buffalo's, you name it.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Our paramedics get to experience it all and the remoteness
- 2:33Speaker 2: of the Northern Territory adds that other dynamics I mentioned
- 2:35Speaker 2: to it as well.
- 2:37Speaker 1: And so Craig, how exactly are you trying to recruise
- 2:40Speaker 1: these paramedics from around Australia.
- 2:43Speaker 2: So we have a national campaign going at the moment,
- 2:45Speaker 2: obviously through all types of mediums to try and attract
- 2:49Speaker 2: those people. We're really trying to give people an understanding
- 2:54Speaker 2: of the uniqueness of the Northern Territory and what they
- 2:56Speaker 2: could experience up here. And we're in a you know,
- 3:00Speaker 2: a really difficult to environment at the moment because every
- 3:02Speaker 2: ance service in Australia is recruiting because of COVID. But
- 3:05Speaker 2: we believe that we have something special that's going to
- 3:08Speaker 2: attract those people and we're working very hard, you know,
- 3:12Speaker 2: print media, you know, TV and obviously social media as well,
- 3:17Speaker 2: and so.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Is it kicked off yet, Craig, or when exactly is
- 3:19Speaker 1: it kicking off?
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yeah, look, we've started to kick it off. I believe
- 3:24Speaker 2: we did some advertising yesterday. We've obviously been online. Our
- 3:28Speaker 2: first actual recruitment group starts on the twenty eighth of March,
- 3:32Speaker 2: which is fantastic. That's only four weeks away, and we've
- 3:34Speaker 2: already got a fourteen people set up ready to start
- 3:38Speaker 2: their recruitment phase in so working really hard to keep
- 3:43Speaker 2: on track and get those people into the Northern Territory
- 3:46Speaker 2: and give them an experience that they'll never forget.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Well, Craig, obviously talking about recruitment this morning, did anything
- 3:51Speaker 1: happen overnight or over the last couple of days that
- 3:53Speaker 1: we should be aware.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Of the only thing that's sort of happened overnight that's
- 3:58Speaker 2: probably of in is we actually had a paramedic crew
- 4:01Speaker 2: at one five this morning come across a car and
- 4:04Speaker 2: collided with a pole environment around about there, and one
- 4:08Speaker 2: person seriously injured there and one person not so seriously injured,
- 4:13Speaker 2: both transported to the Hospel. But just shows you, you know,
- 4:15Speaker 2: our paramedics are out in about twenty four hours to day,
- 4:17Speaker 2: coming across this stuff and experiencing things that normally they
- 4:21Speaker 2: wouldn't get to see.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yeah, well, Craig Garaway, we always appreciate your time. We'll
- 4:26Speaker 1: chat to you again on Monday.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks Katie, and thank you for having us. And
- 4:31Speaker 2: you know, hopefully we can find some great paramedics to
- 4:34Speaker 2: look after territories. Yeah.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Well, actually, is there anywhere where Let's say someone's listening
- 4:38Speaker 1: this morning and their brothers are paramedic into stage or there.
- 4:41Speaker 1: You know, they've got somebody who they know who might
- 4:43Speaker 1: be interested. What should they do? Who can they contact?
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, look, get online onto our web page, jump on there,
- 4:50Speaker 2: or contact our HR department at some John Ambulance on
- 4:54Speaker 2: a nine double two, six to two double zero and
- 4:58Speaker 2: ask for HR and they'll with them in the right
- 5:00Speaker 2: direction and we can get started.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Thank you very much for your time this morning, Craig.
- 5:05Speaker 1: We'll talk to you soon.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Yeah, take care, Ka, thank you.
- 5:08Speaker 1: See
