- 0:48You have arrived. Welcome to the ASPY world.
- 0:52Here's where we talk about anything and everything ASD in
- 0:55an upbeat and informative way. And now here's your man on the
- 1:00spectrum, your autism Ambassador, Daniel Morgan Jones.
- 1:07Change can be super challenging for people on the autism
- 1:09spectrum. That is why I've compiled 3
- 1:12major things that you can help to implement in an articipation
- 1:15life. If it's you or somebody else to
- 1:17help them overcome change, let's get into it.
- 1:19And there's a secret 4th bonus tip right at the end if you stay
- 1:22to watch. Okay Guys, welcome back to the
- 1:24aspy world. My name is Dan.
- 1:25What is going on? I have Asperger Syndrome and
- 1:27ADHD so I make videos on this stuff every single week.
- 1:31So if you do not want to miss a video on Learn More, make sure
- 1:33to hit the subscribe button down below.
- 1:34So change is something that happens.
- 1:36It's inevitable. Life is an ever changing
- 1:38experience. Yet people on the autism
- 1:39spectrum have a massive issue with the transition of change
- 1:42because it's going out of that comfort zone.
- 1:45It's something that's moving away from their control.
- 1:47All these things cause mega issues with Roblox.
- 1:50Now, if you're a parent or as a person watching this and you're
- 1:52thinking, damn, I know exactly what you mean, down with the
- 1:56video, well, I'm going to get into 3 tips right now.
- 1:58Actually, there's four, and the 4th one is a bonus one right at
- 2:00the end. So we'll get into 3 tips right
- 2:02Now buckle up. Now preparing in advance sounds
- 2:05just normal. Like, Oh yeah, you know what?
- 2:07We'll just prepare. We're just going to kind of get
- 2:09our stuff to get in the bag and then go with it, Pick up a
- 2:12sandwich on the way. OK, That's not preparing in
- 2:13advance. That's actually just winging it.
- 2:15Preparing in advance means that you basically minimize all the
- 2:19stress that you could encounter in that change or transition
- 2:21before you do something and you low the anxiety of the person on
- 2:24the spectrum. Now, how you do this is that you
- 2:26make a plan. You say okay, we're going to be
- 2:29here for this amount of time, it's over.
- 2:31Lunch time to bring it out with me.
- 2:33It may rain, so I'm going to bring an umbrella with me.
- 2:35I'm going to have a backup iPhone with me or iPad or
- 2:38something like that, so that if we need to use games to calm
- 2:41myself down, then I've got those games there.
- 2:43I'm going to bring my headphones because it may be too noisy.
- 2:46All of these things are preparing in advance.
- 2:48Before you go to the change, another way to do this is to
- 2:51make those things like that. What's going to happen?
- 2:54A visual schedule. Like you could get emojis and
- 2:56say, OK, we're going to go to the grocery store, grocery store
- 2:58emoji, then we're going to go to the swimming pool, swimming pool
- 3:01emoji, then we're going to go to Pizza Hut, and then you're like
- 3:03a pizza emoji. All of those things visually.
- 3:07Or a planner on a prepared planner will give the autistic
- 3:10person enough advanced notice to visually see what's going to
- 3:13happen. And they will be so much more
- 3:16comfortable and relaxed with that situation as it comes.
- 3:18Because that's one of the biggest issues we have is not
- 3:20knowing what to expect. So #2 is using sensory tools.
- 3:24Now sensory tools are things like fidget gadgets and all
- 3:28kinds of sensory deprivation tools, like could be sunglasses,
- 3:31could be noise cancelling headphones, could be sensory
- 3:34friendly clothing, could be clothing, window tags.
- 3:36All this kind of stuff is sensory based.
- 3:39Now what you're going to see is that artistic people have issues
- 3:42all the way through their life like they're going to the store,
- 3:44they're going to have issues because the the store is going
- 3:46to have certain smells that they don't like.
- 3:49But if you're already wearing AT shirt that's making you feel a
- 3:51bit uncomfortable, non sensory pleasing and you go to the
- 3:53store, then you have two problems.
- 3:55Not just not just the one to deal with, right?
- 3:57What about if you also got your headphones?
- 3:59Now you got the headphones, the clothing and the smells in the
- 4:02store. There's three problems and it
- 4:04could just be one. If you remember to do the
- 4:05sensory clothing and the headphones so you can see
- 4:08preparing all the tools that you need for a trip for century
- 4:13pleasing or century seeking people, then you are going to be
- 4:16able to really reduce the amount of stress or issues that happen
- 4:20in certain environments on a transitional change going from
- 4:23the car to the store or vice versa.
- 4:24Right as this video is brought to you by Brilliant and thank
- 4:27you so much guys for sponsoring this video.
- 4:28Brilliant is a homeopathic, non prescription medication that you
- 4:32can get online. Now Brilliant is homeopathic
- 4:35which means there's no nasties in it, but it would definitely
- 4:37consult with your doctor before taking any medication because
- 4:40like you know, we're humans, right?
- 4:41So this one is basically amazing.
- 4:43It helps enhance clarity, improve attention and
- 4:46concentration, reduce fields of anxiety, stress, impulsivity,
- 4:49restlessness and irritability, which is really common in people
- 4:53with autism at ADHD. Which is why I take it I've been
- 4:55taking this for two years. It's absolutely brilliant.
- 4:57Take take two of these little flavourless dissolved tabs every
- 5:01single day and I take them two of them four times a day.
- 5:06It takes about four weeks to kick in and it's absolutely
- 5:07amazing. They do want for children as
- 5:09well. But I am going to leave you a
- 5:10code if you want to check out. Brilliant you can do at the link
- 5:13down below, but use the code as B-15 if you want to get 15% off.
- 5:17Super awesome and I highly recommend it.
- 5:18OK you guys on the video. OK, so #3 is create a
- 5:22microcontrolled environment. Now microcontrolling is kind of
- 5:26like, say you are trying to get your kid to the store because
- 5:29you want to go get groceries and you want to go to the store and
- 5:32say to your kid, hey, let's go to the store.
- 5:33And now your kid is going to freak out because they are
- 5:35losing control of their environment.
- 5:36They were at home playing Minecraft all ice and cozy, and
- 5:39all of a sudden now they're going into the car and then get
- 5:40to the store. It's crazy, right?
- 5:42But if you said to them, hey, you get to control the
- 5:45temperature in the car, you get to control the music in the car.
- 5:50You get to control which parking space we go to in the car park
- 5:54or the parking lot or wherever you go.
- 5:56So what you do is you create micro environments, like what
- 5:59toy do you want to bring with you?
- 6:00What sensory tool do you want to bring with you?
- 6:01What clothes do you want to wear?
- 6:03What is it that you can give the person to control or you can
- 6:06control yourself in an environment that seems
- 6:08uncontrollable. This is a key to many areas of
- 6:11life from an autistic person, but it's super important when
- 6:14you're dealing with change. OK, so #4 is something that
- 6:16people always forget. And this is the bonus tip guys.
- 6:18Now, this is providing reassurance and support.
- 6:21The difficulties that artistic people face dearly is crazy,
- 6:24right? But we hardly ever have people
- 6:26validate us and reassure us that it's OK.
- 6:29It's completely fine. We understand.
- 6:31We get this panic from the other people, like, Oh my gosh, what
- 6:33do we do? What do we do?
- 6:34And then people ask me, what can we do to help?
- 6:35I'm like, I don't know, I just need validation that moment in
- 6:38time. I need support and reassurance,
- 6:39that evidence we find and somebody needs to take control
- 6:41and just chill. Because when an event happens
- 6:44that you're feeling difficulties from like your meltdown because
- 6:47your meltdown because of change or something, you know, the
- 6:49transition didn't go well. It's because you are feeling out
- 6:52of control. Now you need somebody to take
- 6:54control and say everything's gonna be fine.
- 6:56Super, really easy one to do. People always forget this one,
- 6:59but I know that it's effective and I know how this works.
