Latest / Mental Per4mance Daily with Adam Rutz / Put It In The Drawer

- Adam Rutz: If it's not important right now, put it in the drawer. I'm reading Bill Belichick's book, The Art of Winning, and he talks about that motto. Put it in the drawer. And I love that because one of the biggest reasons people struggle to perform at a high level isn't because they don't know what to do. It's because their attention is everywhere. You've got text coming in, emails, problems at work, things at home. Something you want to buy, something you want to research, a conversation you want to have, a new idea you want to chase. And before you know it, you're trying to mentally carry 10 different things at the exact same time. But elite performance requires focus. So ask yourself, does this actually need my attention right now? If the answer is no, put it in the drawer. That doesn't mean you're ignoring it forever. It doesn't mean it isn't important. It means you're making a decision that there is something more important directly in front of you right now. An athlete getting ready for a big game doesn't need to be thinking about everything happening next month. A business owner going into a huge week doesn't need to chase every new idea that pops into their head. You have to be disciplined enough to say, I'll deal with that later. Right now, this is what matters. Because Every distraction you allow into your mind is taking attention away from something else. So as you enter into this week, use this afternoon to take inventory. What is actually important right now? What deserves your best energy? What do you need to be completely locked in on to execute the way you want to execute? And then ask the other question: what can I put in the drawer? Write it down. Put it away. You can come back to it when the time is right. But for now, close the drawer and lock in on what's directly in front of you. Mindset, process, discipline, execution, that's mental performance daily.
