- 0:00Justin, your father called me a year ago and you know how much
- 0:04your dad loves you. And he said to me, Herman, how
- 0:09many starts do you have in the Xfinity Series?
- 0:13So everybody look behind my head right now.
- 0:15NASCAR gave me that. I ended at 547 starts and when I
- 0:21was redecorating, you know, this area, I had that sitting around
- 0:27for, you know, well, since 2015, NASCAR gave me that. 2015 was my
- 0:33last NASCAR Xfinity race in Iowa.
- 0:39So I'm at 547 starts and that's where I ended and I and I have
- 0:43the most starts. I have fun with it.
- 0:46I poke them. I'm the mayor, I'm the greatest
- 0:52course. We're we're poking them right?
- 0:55So Gator wants you, Justin, to have more starts than me and I
- 1:01want that too. And when that happens, I'm going
- 1:03to be there. But we got a nemesis who who's
- 1:07that other kid right there that's that's going to outrun me
- 1:10too? What's his name again?
- 1:11I forgot. Jeremy Clements.
- 1:14Jeremy Clements. Now there's Jeremy.
- 1:19How is this going to end between both?
- 1:22How is this going to end? Or is Jeremy Clinton?
- 1:25I mean, when you and Jeremy pass me up, you know, man, I just
- 1:32wish I could come congratulate you first.
- 1:35But it sounds to me like Jeremy's going to outrun me.
- 1:37I'm going to congratulate him. Then you're going to outrun
- 1:40Jeremy, and Jeremy's going to have to congratulate you.
- 1:43What do you think? I think, I think if I'm looking
- 1:46at it to be honest with you, I think Jeremy's got this one in
- 1:50the bag, to be honest. I I'm super proud of how many
- 1:55starts I have. I don't know what the number is
- 1:57currently I think. 42 you have 482 starts.
- 2:01Yeah, I, I can't, I can't get there.
- 2:03I can't get to your number, not with where my head's AT.
- 2:08And and what I what I believe is is my.
- 2:12We're going to talk about this. We're going to talk about this.
- 2:14Keep going. Jeremy's got to be right around
- 2:18the 500 five 505 mark, I would say pretty easily because I the
- 2:23two years that I was in cop, you know, he was he was still racing
- 2:26in the Xfinity Series. We started this summertime.
- 2:28But one of the cool things for me is, is is you know, you talk
- 2:31about full circle moments. I'll never forget years and
- 2:36years and years ago, Jeremy Clements was an upcoming Durley
- 2:38model racer as as was I right. And I don't remember if they
- 2:44were a Cherokee or a Gaffney, but Jeremy was racing a super
- 2:47Durley model and he had his hands on steering wheel.
- 2:52Drive chef came out. And if you ever, if you ever
- 2:54shake Jeremy's hand, you'll notice it right away.
- 2:56But the hole inside of Jeremy's hand was ripped out, right?
- 3:01He had his hand on the wheel. The drive chef come through the
- 3:02inside of the car, tore out the hole inside of his hand.
- 3:05They were going to cut his hand off.
- 3:06Oh my. And his dad begged them not to,
- 3:09not to cut his hand off. And the doctor said, well, I can
- 3:13give him, you know, 24 hours, 48 hours at the most.
- 3:16And if it's not, if it's not healing itself, we're going to
- 3:19have to cut it off. And kind of miraculously, the
- 3:22blood vessels and the way that his hand was damaged, they ended
- 3:26up going around and he's had to put a lot of reconstructive
- 3:29surgery into his hand. I know it's been super painful.
- 3:32They actually, at one point they even sewed his hand inside of
- 3:34his, inside of his skin. They they sewed his hand to his
- 3:37body so that it would allow his hand to heal.
- 3:40And Ed Petroff, somebody's been around the dear late model world
- 3:44and sponsored a lot of late model racers, myself included,
- 3:47growing up and, and been integral in kind of that Saint
- 3:49Louis area. But but really his, his, his
- 3:52influence has gone, you know, really worldwide.
- 3:57His daughter Michelle called me one day and she said, Hey, she
- 3:59said you and Jeremy are similar in age.
- 4:02And she said he's really struggling, right.
- 4:05He's not able to be in a race car.
- 4:06And if I send you his number, would you, would you call and
- 4:09talk to him and just, you know, up his spirits and, and, and
- 4:14just have that conversation? And so I, I picked up the phone
- 4:16and I called Jeremy Clements and really didn't know Jeremy that
- 4:19well, other than we had kept up with each other in the racing
- 4:22world and both young drivers. I think we were probably both 14
- 4:25or 15 at the time. And his father has one of the
- 4:27most famous motor companies in the world.
- 4:30Yeah, and I, I had a Clements engine for my race car.
- 4:33So I, I was, I mean that, you know, they were, they were and
- 4:36still are. Honestly, if you talk to anybody
- 4:38now, they're one of about got 2 engine builders that everybody
- 4:41is sought after in the Durlay model world.
- 4:44And, and honestly, I think they build the heads or they, they,
- 4:48they, you know, machine the heads for probably majority of
- 4:50the engine builders in the Durlay model industry.
- 4:53But we had a conversation and we became friends and that
- 4:57friendship is gone for a lot of years.
- 4:59And, and you know, I remember him, you know, having to make
- 5:03special attachments for his hand to be able to shift gears and
- 5:06all kinds of stuff, you know, once he was able to heal himself
- 5:09up. But.
- 5:11They asked him, they asked him how he they wanted his hand to
- 5:15be and he said. Like a like a steering wheel.
- 5:24Does it? Does it surprise both of you?
- 5:27What you know? I've interviewed Jonathan
- 5:29Davenport, Bobby Pierce, I've interviewed some of the greats.
- 5:32You you think of Jeremy Clements and and I had no idea you had
- 5:36this relationship with him. Does it surprise you where
- 5:39Jeremy could be running, you know, the greatest dirt super
- 5:44late models in the world. Jeremy Clements could be running
- 5:46for 100,000 to win at Eldora and yet Jeremy just wants to be in
- 5:52the Xfinity Series had Gator or or Justin.
- 5:56Have you both thought about Jeremy as you to kind of share
- 5:59this? Most Xfinity starts in common.
- 6:04Why, why why does he run Xfinity when his dad rules the dirt late
- 6:09model world? I've asked that question 1000
- 6:11times. I've asked Jeremy that same
- 6:13question because I, I don't know.
- 6:14I, I, you know, I, Jeremy's had success.
- 6:19He's a NASCAR Xfinity Series winner.
- 6:21He's, he's been somebody that has had a lot of success on
- 6:24track. And I would say of, of recent
- 6:26times has maybe a little been a little bit more of a struggle
- 6:28than what it was, you know, 5-10 years ago.
- 6:31But you know, they do they family owned team.
- 6:34He's never driven really for anybody else.
- 6:37If he has family in the sport, you know, in, in the sport of
- 6:39NASCAR outside of the, the engine building business.
- 6:43But I, I don't know. I don't know that I've ever
- 6:46understood that part of it. Can I throw, can I throw
- 6:50something in there? Jeremy was on the short track to
- 6:56go to Childress with Chevrolet and then the accident happened.
- 7:04That was that's when all that happened.
- 7:07But he it it was planned that they were going to run Jeremy
- 7:13RCR. I'll be darned well.
- 7:16I want to let everybody know that I'm extremely proud when
- 7:22Jeremy breaks my record. I can't wait to go and
- 7:25congratulate him. I wanted stay on the same
- 7:28subject here, but I want to talk about Justin Algar for a little
- 7:32bit. As you know, Justin is like 90
- 7:36miles up the Rd. Springfield, IL.
- 7:39His dad, you know, Gator, Mike Algar.
- 7:42They're like family to me. Ed Horn, your PR guy, he said
- 7:48we're going to make you eat crow.
- 7:49I'm like, what are you talking about?
- 7:51You wanted Justin Allgar to break your record.
- 7:54I said I'm going to. I said that.
- 7:55Let me tell you what Rusty told me and I'm going to tell you
- 7:58this. I said you're thinking wrong.
- 8:01I said I love Jeremy. All I'm saying is when I was
- 8:04interviewing Justin Allgar, I'm like, I'll be nice of you to
- 8:08break my record. And then to my surprise, and
- 8:12this is what I want you to comment on, Justin says next
- 8:16year is his last year. He's he he said he's he's
- 8:21quitting after next year. He said it on Kenny
- 8:24conversation. It's time to go back home and
- 8:27run Hoosier tire Midwest number one.
- 8:31What do you think of that and do you think you'll really do it?
- 8:34Shocked to hear it, Kenny. When I, when I heard and saw the
- 8:38interview, I was like, wow, that's, that's news for sure.
- 8:41That's big news, Justin. Phenomenal human being,
- 8:47phenomenal race car driver. Nothing bad to say.
- 8:51Couldn't say 1 bad thing about him.
- 8:52Love the guy, he's amazing. I love being around him, love
- 8:57talking to him. He's very intelligent as well.
- 8:59So to hear that I was caught off guard because I thought he'd be
- 9:03like me, be around for I mean who knows how long, how just a
- 9:08lot longer. So yeah, shocking to hear.
- 9:11And when, when you're driving like his, the, the situation
- 9:15he's in, man, you'd have to drag me out of that thing.
- 9:19So. No kidding.
- 9:21To hear that, I was like, damn, I was like, can I take your ride
- 9:24over there? He's like, you call, call Rick
- 9:27Brandt. So it was he's just joking.
- 9:29But I don't see Justin, Justin retiring 100%.
- 9:34I think he will definitely run some races here and there, but
- 9:38he maybe he won't be full time. But yeah, I thought he'd be
- 9:42right there with me. And so it is surprising to hear
- 9:45it. You know, just in that moment,
- 9:51Justin's family, you know, they run a very like your family.
- 9:55I'm sure you can relate you you don't build motors.
- 9:59But the reason we bring Justin up, everybody, it's it's the
- 10:03three amigos, it's me, and then it's the man you're looking at
- 10:07Jeremy, and then it's Justin.
