- 0:00I'm making wigs now.
- 0:02Welcome back to making Everyday Magic.
- 0:04My name is Shanna.
- 0:05If you are new here for a home schooling family of four, we are in our 10th year
- 0:09of homeschooling and today I just want to talk to you about
- 0:15what's next.
- 0:18Life outside of homeschooling.
- 0:26Before we go any further, if we scroll down, hit
- 0:28the big red subscribe button,
- 0:29turn on that bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 0:32As always, you can find me down in the comments
- 0:34or over on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic.
- 0:38So I if you guys have been here
- 0:42for any period of time, you probably know that I am.
- 0:48Busy. I
- 0:51someone who truly enjoys to learn new things.
- 0:55I am somebody who is always thinking about a need
- 1:00that needs to be filled, or something to do, or what's next.
- 1:04And I have what I would argue is a habitual problem of trying to
- 1:11monetize those efforts.
- 1:13And I don't
- 1:14I don't mean that to sound as negative as it does,
- 1:17but I just feel like if I'm investing a lot of energy and effort, it should,
- 1:22you know, pay me back in some way, for lack of a better term.
- 1:25So I have been thinking, and part of it is a bit of an existential crisis
- 1:29as we enter our last year of elementary and our first year of high school,
- 1:32and I recognize that my days are coming to an end with my main pursuit
- 1:38being homeschooling my children with my main pursuit
- 1:42being my children, my family, and my home life.
- 1:45And so I have naturally started thinking about what's next.
- 1:49What is next?
- 1:50I am not in the trenches.
- 1:52I'm not in the nitty gritty of parenting.
- 1:55I have big kids.
- 1:57Okay?
- 1:57I don't need babysitters for a night out.
- 2:01I don't need constant handholding.
- 2:03My kids can do things for me. Now.
- 2:06We are on a path where I just.
- 2:08I have big kids and so my role is different.
- 2:12Of course, I'm still needed.
- 2:13Of course I'm still support person, but there's so much that I am not doing
- 2:18right now that it has allowed me to really kind of get my head above water.
- 2:23That little mirror cat that pops up and looks around and says, what's next?
- 2:28So for me, I just want to share with you because I think it's important as
- 2:34especially as primary caregivers, especially as mothers and women,
- 2:38most of you, not all of you, but as primary caregivers, it's important
- 2:42to start addressing, you know, and whether you homeschool or not,
- 2:45maybe your babies are in school for the first time.
- 2:47I've had a lot of those
- 2:47conversations recently, and maybe it is that they just need
- 2:51you less and you have other interests, and there's things you want to do.
- 2:55There's things it's okay to fill your own bucket.
- 2:57And that's what I want to share with you and remind you, I am very passionate
- 3:01about learning things, and I am very passionate about the fact
- 3:05that everything is figurative
- 3:08for me.
- 3:09Something that I have seen firsthand a lot recently
- 3:12is the professional theater industry.
- 3:17And for me, with my background, my, you know, 20
- 3:20something years of cosmetology license under my belt for me
- 3:25with my child who is pursuing theater for me in a city
- 3:30that has a lot of large theaters, I think that what I want to do
- 3:35next is learn the art of wig making and wig styling.
- 3:40Because y accessible, because y
- 3:44flexible schedule you commit for a show and then you go on your way.
- 3:48Three creative something I already have in my tool belt.
- 3:51I have a lot of this gills that overlap because of cosmetology.
- 3:55Harris Harris Harris hair.
- 3:56There's some intricacies with wig making and development, which
- 3:59I am working on, like lace ventilating and things like that.
- 4:03So this is kind of like a fun hobby and a new skill that is marketable.
- 4:08That could be fun.
- 4:09That could be a thing that I can pick up when I am available
- 4:12and put down when I am not.
- 4:14So just the flexibility of that and checking all of those other boxes
- 4:17that for me are really important creativity and,
- 4:22you know, flexible
- 4:23scheduling and not having like a real, a real and honest work day.
- 4:26I don't think that's for me.
- 4:28These are reasons why I'm like, oh,
- 4:30this could be really fun, really, really, really fun.
- 4:34And I am excited.
- 4:36And because of that, I want to share with you
- 4:39that it's good to start thinking about what's next.
- 4:42If there's one thing that I have learned, if Shawna learns things, it is learning
- 4:46that Shawna is always evolving and there's always something new and exciting
- 4:51that I'm passionate about to learn about, or to get started or to share.
- 4:56So I just want to come and chat with you.
- 4:59Human to human, homeschool mom to homeschool mom, mom to mom, primary
- 5:03caregiver to primary caregiver, woman to woman that this isn't all there is
- 5:08and you should be doing those things for yourself.
- 5:12Doing those things that make you excited.
- 5:14Doing those things that stretch your gray matter and work on your dexterity.
- 5:18I'll try to insert a little video because I have not made it very far,
- 5:22entirely self-taught.
- 5:23So I would like to just over.
- 5:25But I think it'll be really fun.
- 5:28I think it'll be really awesome to like, make a mustache.
- 5:32I mean, I think it'll just be really entertaining.
- 5:34So that is my new favorite fun passion project,
- 5:37and we'll see where it goes and where it leads.
- 5:39The worst case that'll happen
- 5:40is I've invested a little bit of dough and it will burn up in my face
- 5:44spectacularly, but I will definitely keep you posted.
- 5:48I think it's really fun as we age and to model for our kids
- 5:53that it is okay to be a beginner at things.
- 5:56It's okay to learn things.
- 5:58It is okay because everything is figured out.
- 6:00There are ways that we can share the things that we do know.
- 6:04Like I come here and share about in homeschool
- 6:06and there are ways to share that we are learning something new.
- 6:09And I think that's just really, really fun
- 6:12because everything is figure out about other things that I am working on.
- 6:16Learning right now is pairing planning our hopefully soon Parisian trip.
- 6:22We're learning all the things that we want to do.
- 6:24I've got a color coded spreadsheet and that is super fun.
- 6:27I am learning a lot more about the back end of some of these platforms,
- 6:32so just an example of things that I've had to figure out.
- 6:34I've built all my own websites myself just by figuring out what I needed to do.
- 6:38I built this entire channel
- 6:40filming, lighting, the entire situation just by figuring out what I wanted to do.
- 6:44My child's entire like, theater pursuits was just by
- 6:48gaining the information and figuring out what to do next,
- 6:52where to find those resources again, entirely on our own.
- 6:56Kind of out in the wilds.
- 6:57No hand-holding here.
- 6:58And it's been kind of great.
- 7:01Other things microdosing pet ownership is something that I am particularly proud
- 7:05of, and I will insert a little picture of our newest best friend,
- 7:07Little Orphan Annie, who is available for adoption through Houston SPCA,
- 7:11in case you were wondering.
- 7:12But being able to kind of like, figure out how we can have pets without that burden
- 7:17of having pets all the time, I feel like was pretty awesome.
- 7:21This new book that I am obsessed with, it's like little brain challenges.
- 7:24It's like Sudoku, but also like murder mysteries.
- 7:27And I think it's so fun.
- 7:28I will link it down below or up in the corner.
- 7:30Currently figuring out how to do these Michael Thompson vocabulary worksheets
- 7:36that I want for myself, which, by the way, the kids are loving more.
- 7:39Couple of weeks in, scores are off the charts.
- 7:42So good, so happy, so pleased with that.
- 7:44And now I need to figure out how to share that with you, which I will.
- 7:47I will likely share it with you via my own personal website,
- 7:50and then also have it up through like teachers pay teachers.
- 7:53Not 100% sure how that's going to work yet.
- 7:55But again, every single little thing is figurative
- 7:59and I do want to continue sharing things that matter, like Michael
- 8:03Thompson worksheets that we put together
- 8:04to make our lives easier, like my pursuit of being a beginner at things.
- 8:08Because I think it's important to highlight
- 8:10that so often people come here and they're experts on this and experts
- 8:13on that, and so rarely are they figuring out things.
- 8:17And I think that's important.
- 8:18Something else that I really want to focus on right now
- 8:21in the kind of especially in these times going forward.
- 8:25There are a lot of people out there who are extremely frugal.
- 8:28Coupon clipping won't spend any money,
- 8:30and there's a lot of people out there showing you all the things
- 8:32and all the extravagances and things like that, but something that I personally
- 8:35have always been passionate about is maximizing value.
- 8:39So getting the most out of the dollars I do spend, so it's not spending the least
- 8:43and is not blowing it up.
- 8:45It's making sure that every dollar that I spend is stretched
- 8:49to get me the maximum amount of value.
- 8:52And there's a balance in that
- 8:53with effort and energy cost, time savings and what you're actually getting.
- 8:57So I am I have secured all of the handles
- 9:01and things for more value, more life.
- 9:04I probably will not talk about it here much, but if you are interested
- 9:09in seeing what that's like going forward, just everyday tips and tricks.
- 9:12And I'm not even talking, you know about blowing up
- 9:165000 credit cards to get a million
- 9:19and a half points. I'm talking about things
- 9:20like the membership pays for itself after two visits.
- 9:23I'm talking about things that every single person has accessibly and can do.
- 9:28Because just like homeschooling, I don't want cost to be the barrier
- 9:31to things that you want to do, the things that you want to enjoy,
- 9:34and the time that you want to spend with your family, and the new endeavors
- 9:38that you want to search out and find along the way.
- 9:41Guys, I hope that you have found this helpful, entertaining, or informative.
- 9:45If you have these, scroll down, hit that big red subscribe button,
- 9:48turn on the bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 9:50Let me know what are you working on right now?
- 9:53What is your next thought?
- 9:55What's your plan for after you are no longer needed as much in the home?
- 10:01Like what does this look like for you?
- 10:03I would love to hear it.
- 10:04What is your.
- 10:05When I'm old, I want to be a museum or docent.
- 10:08I want. I'm so excited about the idea, the prospect of that.
- 10:11I love it so much.
- 10:12The idea of wig making and wig styling is so exciting to me for so many reasons.
- 10:19It's such a specialized in niche field.
- 10:21It's a thing I already have in my pocket.
- 10:23It looks entertaining.
- 10:24You meet creative people, you get to see shows and be in the theater.
- 10:27You could travel because they even need wig contracts on cruise ships.
- 10:31Like, I am excited about the prospect of what this could mean
- 10:35and what this could bring.
- 10:36And even if even if I never get good at it, and even if I never do it
- 10:40in any other aspect, then right now it's exciting and motivating.
- 10:43That's enough for me.
- 10:46I just want to share with you that we're growing,
- 10:48that we're evolving in the same way
- 10:50that our kids are figuring out what they're going to do.
- 10:52We are also always figuring out what's next.
- 10:55What's new, how's it going?
- 10:57And I have pursued many things and failed spectacularly at a lot of them.
- 11:02But I've been mildly successful with most and incredibly successful.
- 11:06I would argue on the one that in this season of life matters
- 11:09most, and that is my home, my home life, my babies and our homeschool.
- 11:12So yeah, share with us. Share with us now below.
- 11:15How are you growing? How are you stretching your brain matter?
- 11:17How are you staying fresh? How are you staying motivated?
- 11:20What are you excited to see your children watch you do I have one of you here?
- 11:25You're wonderful and you know who you are.
- 11:27Picked up figure skating like as an adult.
- 11:31It is the most inspiring thing.
- 11:33The most inspiring thing.
- 11:35And I love it so much because that's what I want to share, that life is short
- 11:39and we deserve to be happy, and we deserve to pursue
- 11:44good things for the sake of pursuing them.
- 11:46And yes,
- 11:47I always try to make a dollar off of the things that I'm doing
- 11:49because there's a lot of effort and energy, but it is good enough
- 11:53and valuable enough just to enjoy things, to bring yourself joy.
- 11:59Because the world is on fire and life is short.
- 12:01So get out there and live and share with us what are you doing for you?
- 12:06Let's grow this list.
- 12:07Let's inspire each other.
- 12:09Let's remind both of the little girl inside us and
- 12:13the grown adults who have to.
- 12:14Whether these storms in the world that together we can keep making every day magic.
