- 0:05When the Lord Jesus taught about the last days and what is
- 0:08commonly known as the Olivet Discourse, He made an
- 0:12extraordinary promise concerning that time to come.
- 0:18In the middle of his teaching, Christ said in Matthew 24, verse
- 0:2214, And the gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed
- 0:27throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and
- 0:33then the end will come. What a remarkable declaration.
- 0:40You see, what Christ is saying here when you consider the
- 0:44surrounding teaching around this promise is that the rise of
- 0:48false teachers and deception, global upheaval, rapid cultural
- 0:54decay, and the unprecedented persecutions of Christians will
- 0:59in no way hinder the spread of the Gospel.
- 1:04Somehow, someway, the saving message of Jesus Christ will
- 1:09permeate the four corners of the earth.
- 1:13Furthermore, what this verse reveals is that although there
- 1:18will be mounting judgement in that brief period of time,
- 1:23Christ assures us that He will give the nation's a final
- 1:28opportunity, a final invitation to receive salvation before that
- 1:35door is closed forever. Which means that while the
- 1:41tribulation period will bring an escalation of judgments, it also
- 1:45guarantees an amplification of the preaching of the gospel at
- 1:50the same time. And this is undeniably a
- 1:54demonstration of the incredible mercy of God as He carries out
- 1:59his most visible and fierce sequence of judgments.
- 2:01He will also make a way for people to hear the truth that
- 2:05can save their souls for eternity.
- 2:09Now, last week we discussed if you were here, Revelation 7 in
- 2:14the first portion as we witness God's initial fulfilment that He
- 2:20would save the nation of Israel. The budding of that promise was
- 2:24made known in the first few verses.
- 2:26And I want to tell you today that the confirmation of God's
- 2:29trustworthiness will only continue in the rest of this
- 2:32chapter. Because now we are going to
- 2:34discover, as we get a future glimpse of how the Lord will
- 2:38keep His word from Matthew 2414, that the gospel will indeed go
- 2:43to all nations before the very end of all things unfolds.
- 2:48So let's reach it and read it together in Revelation 7,
- 2:51beginning in verse 9. Revelation 7, beginning in verse
- 2:569, we will read together attentively down to verse 17.
- 3:03John says after this I looked and behold a great multitude
- 3:08that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes
- 3:12and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and
- 3:15before the Lamb, clothed in white robes with palm branches
- 3:18in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, Salvation
- 3:22belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb.
- 3:26And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the
- 3:28elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on
- 3:31their faces before the throne and worshipped God, saying,
- 3:34Amen, blessing and glory and wisdom and Thanksgiving and
- 3:37honor and power, and might be to our God forever and ever, Amen.
- 3:42Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these
- 3:45clothed and white robes, and from where have they come?
- 3:48I said to him, Sir, you know, And he said to me, These are the
- 3:51ones coming out of the great tribulation.
- 3:54They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of
- 3:57the Lamb. Therefore they are before the
- 3:59throne of God and serve him day and night in His temple.
- 4:02And he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his
- 4:05presence. They shall hunger no more,
- 4:08neither thirst anymore. The sun shall not strike them,
- 4:10nor any scorching heat, for the Lamb in the midst of the throne
- 4:14will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of
- 4:17living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
- 4:24Father, we ask, as always, with a complete awareness of our need
- 4:30for your help, that you would lead us so faithfully, so
- 4:34clearly, so powerfully through these truths.
- 4:38We need you Lord, open our minds, burn in our hearts, and
- 4:43may this transform us in Jesus name, Amen.
- 4:48As I was meditating on this passage, the phrase that came to
- 4:51mind was the great tribulation harvest.
- 4:56And there's so much more to learn from this passage than
- 4:59seeing it as an expansion of what Christ taught in the
- 5:01Gospels. I want us to consider at least
- 5:05three things with you from this glorious scene.
- 5:08The first thing is the people described in this division, the
- 5:11people described. There's so much about this
- 5:14people that we have to consider from the people described.
- 5:17We must look at the praise that was given, the praise that is
- 5:22offered to the throne and him who sits on it in the Lamb.
- 5:26And lastly, I want us to look at the promise that is given, this
- 5:29promise that is given to those people that are described and
- 5:33those who follow in their direction.
- 5:36So let's look again at verse 9. As we look at the people
- 5:38described. At first glance, we read it.
- 5:41This may seem like a description of all believers from all ages,
- 5:44right? But that assumption is quickly
- 5:46clarified by one of the elders who taught John.
- 5:48And John teaches us by the Spirit that these are the
- 5:52innumerable group of people who will come out of the great
- 5:54tribulation. This is speaking about a future
- 5:56group of people. And so this is not speaking
- 5:59about all believers from all time.
- 6:03And what this shows us right away is that there is a coming
- 6:05move of God on the earth that will result in a reach and a
- 6:11rescuing of souls unlike any other time in human history.
- 6:16This should excite us. This should thrill us.
- 6:18And as exciting as it sounds, you may be like me and wondering
- 6:22how is that going to happen? Especially up to this point when
- 6:26we have considered all the things that the world will
- 6:28endure, the tragedies and the tumultuous events and the
- 6:32problems and the wars and all these things will come crashing
- 6:37upon the earth. And yet we read that there's
- 6:40going to be an uncountable amount of people who will be
- 6:43saved. And I believe in this very same
- 6:47chapter, we get our clue. I want to present to you today
- 6:50the possibility that the reason why we will see this and why
- 6:54we're seeing it now is because of the direct ministry of the
- 6:57144,000. Look again at verse 3 of Chapter
- 7:037, the 144,000, which we've established to be the Jewish
- 7:07people who will be saved, a remnant, A revival.
- 7:09Among this people are called servants of our God.
- 7:14Near the end of that verse, showing us that the ceiling, the
- 7:18spiritual application, is not just a way of marking these
- 7:22people for salvation, but for extraordinary service.
- 7:26They're being set apart to perform something to serve the
- 7:29Lord in an incredible fashion during the Tribulation period.
- 7:34Besides that, we also see something else that this unique
- 7:37mark that will be placed upon each of these Jews.
- 7:42We'll also provide a unique level of protection against the
- 7:45things that will transpire following this the the growing
- 7:48escalation of problems and of judgments.
- 7:51This will shield them. How do we know that?
- 7:53Because the Lord told the four angels of the earth to hold back
- 7:56any further punishment until they were protected.
- 8:02And why are they being protected?
- 8:04I think the answer that makes the most sense is so that they
- 8:06can carry out their gospel mission more effectively, that
- 8:10they would be able to do what God has set him apart to do, and
- 8:13that is present the gospel of Jesus Christ to the rest of the
- 8:16world. As things are coming to an end,
- 8:20I think these suggestions are possible.
- 8:22I think this is more likely than one might think because it is
- 8:25totally in concert with the rest of the Scriptures.
- 8:30Here's what I mean. Were you here last week when we
- 8:32talked about Romans 11 briefly and how Paul taught that ethnic
- 8:36Israel will know a national revival in salvation, that at
- 8:40one point they will acknowledge that Jesus Christ of Nazareth is
- 8:43indeed their prophesied Messiah? Well, I want us to revisit
- 8:47Romans 11 and I want us to see the fruit of the salvation of
- 8:51the Jewish people, the growing fruit as the number of
- 8:54salvations increase among this particular people group.
- 8:57Let's go to Romans 11 and let's look at verse 13.
- 9:07Romans 11 verse 13. There's that sound again.
- 9:10I pray that that sound will never go away.
- 9:15Hear what the Spirit of God says through Paul.
- 9:19Now I am speaking to you Gentiles in as much then I am an
- 9:24apostle to the Gentiles. I magnify my ministry.
- 9:28So he wants to, he wants to comfort the Gentile believers.
- 9:31Look, I am an apostle to the Gentiles.
- 9:33I don't think less of my ministry, but let me tell you
- 9:36why. One of the reasons why I magnify
- 9:38my ministry, verse 14, in order somehow to make my fellow Jews
- 9:43jealous and thus save some of them.
- 9:48In other words, I'm going to preach the Hebrew Scriptures.
- 9:50I'm going to show how God is relatable, how he's personal.
- 9:54I'm going to show him how we are enjoying the fruit of the
- 9:57message of their prophets. And my prayer is that as a
- 10:01Christian, as a leader in the church, that the Jewish people
- 10:04watching from a distance would be stirred not with an unhealthy
- 10:07evil envy, but a pure holy jealousy to say, I want what you
- 10:13have. I want the assurance, I want the
- 10:15comfort, I want the joy, I want the peace that you have.
- 10:19Are you saying that your faith is rooted and grounded in the
- 10:21Hebrew Scriptures? Yes.
- 10:23So Paul says, I want to magnify my ministry so I can serve some
- 10:26of these Jews to be saved. But notice what he goes on to
- 10:29say this brilliant point in verse 15.
- 10:32For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world,
- 10:36what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?
- 10:40Do you see what he's saying here?
- 10:44Paul's reminding this Gentile church, do you understand that
- 10:48it was the denial of the Jewish people in terms of the Messiah,
- 10:52Jesus Christ that led to the world being blessed by the
- 10:57gospel? Their rejection of the gospel
- 10:59made it more available for the Gentiles to hear and receive the
- 11:04truth. But he doesn't stop there.
- 11:07He adds to that, if their rejection, their vehement denial
- 11:11of Christ benefited us in such a way, what will happen to the
- 11:16world when they accept the truth?
- 11:19It's an amazing line of reasoning.
- 11:22And he gives us the answer, life from the dead.
- 11:27Now there's debate about that passage.
- 11:29What does he mean, life from the dead?
- 11:31Some think it's a spiritual revival that will take place,
- 11:34but it's more likely that Paul's actually making a connection, a
- 11:37link between the salvation of the Jewish people and that
- 11:40triggering and ushering in the glories of the world to come.
- 11:46Because as we're going to see in Revelation, Israel's salvation
- 11:51will immediately precede the return of Christ.
- 11:55There's that. You can't separate those
- 11:56realities. That's why having an
- 11:59understanding of Israel is absolutely foundational for your
- 12:03eschatology, a fancy word for your understanding and study of
- 12:06the end times. It will determine everything in
- 12:10terms of the order, events and why things happen and how
- 12:12prophecy works. And Paul understands here that
- 12:16if their rejection of the gospel has brought riches to the world,
- 12:20what it what will happen when they embrace Christ?
- 12:24That's why I magnify my ministry.
- 12:26That's why I preach to the Jews. That's why I pray for them.
- 12:33One thing is very clear about Paul's message.
- 12:36The world will experience spiritual riches in proportion
- 12:40to how the Jewish people accept the gospel.
- 12:44Look at verse 12 of Romans 11. He says it more than once.
- 12:48Now, if their trespass means riches for the world, and if
- 12:53their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will
- 12:57their full inclusion mean? It's very plain, is it not?
- 13:04If the world was blessed because they denied Christ, what will
- 13:07happen when they are fully gathered into the fold of the
- 13:11truth? There's no separation between
- 13:14the Jewish people and their relationship with God and how
- 13:16that impacts the globe. Now, why do I bring all of this
- 13:22up? Because it complements what we
- 13:25see in Revelation 7. What do we see in Revelation 7?
- 13:28Again, let me remind you, you have a revival among the Jewish
- 13:31people, 144,000 who are set apart and sealed as servants of
- 13:35God. And immediately following that,
- 13:37what is John C? An innumerable amount of
- 13:40Gentiles who are saved the visions of Revelation 7 agrees
- 13:46completely with Paul's teaching about the future of Israel and
- 13:51how that will impact the nation's.
- 13:56Now this is something for us to really rejoice in, especially
- 14:01with all the supposed controversy with the Jewish
- 14:03people. Us believers need to be very
- 14:06careful to not allow arguments and ideas to persuade you away
- 14:12from the love that God has for them, the love that the apostle
- 14:17Paul had for them, and the desire for them to be saved.
- 14:22There's so much confusion of how Christians should relate to the
- 14:24people of Israel. Let me make it very simple.
- 14:26You desire them to be saved. You pray that their eyes would
- 14:30be open to see Christ and that they would bend their knee to
- 14:32the true Messiah. We are not to be caught up in
- 14:36politics. Our mission is a heavenly 1 and
- 14:41our desire ultimately is that they would be saved.
- 14:44That's your priority and mine. And don't let anybody convince
- 14:48you otherwise. Study this verse, Study this
- 14:50passage carefully and understand God's heart for the Jewish
- 14:55people. Not what some popular pundit
- 14:58says. Not what some famous pastors may
- 15:01say. What does the Bible say about
- 15:03this people? And align your heart with gods
- 15:07so that you can be more in the will of God.
- 15:10Now, there's more to say about this.
- 15:12People described come back here in Revelation 7.
- 15:15We're still in verse 9. They're very familiar attributes
- 15:22made known to us. But there's something that
- 15:23stands out. There is something mentioned
- 15:25that never showed up before. Look here at the end of verse 9.
- 15:29They were holding palm branches in their hands.
- 15:35Is that significant? If you believe details in the
- 15:37Bible are yes. Palm branches throughout the
- 15:41Bible are always connected to celebratory events, joyous
- 15:46occasions. Maybe your mind is going to
- 15:49where it went for me when Jesus came in triumphantly into the
- 15:53Jerusalem, right? The people received them and
- 15:55they quoted the Psalms with palm branches in their hands.
- 15:58But the history of palm branches goes further back.
- 16:01Israel was given 7 feasts by God to celebrate on a yearly basis,
- 16:07and the very last feast is known as the Feast of Booths.
- 16:12But in Exodus it's also known as the Feast of In Gathering of in
- 16:17Gathering. Why?
- 16:18Because it was recognized at the very end of the harvest season
- 16:22and God had given them many instructions of how they were to
- 16:25bring offerings during that feast.
- 16:27But one of the most unique instructions was that the Jewish
- 16:29people were to make booths or tents and to live in them as
- 16:34long as that celebration endured for various reasons, mainly to
- 16:40remember their 40 year wilderness journey and how God
- 16:43had provided and protected them during that process.
- 16:46They were to almost relive that experience as they recollected
- 16:50how God's presence among them in that desert shielded them as
- 16:56they lived in these transportable shelters.
- 17:01But it was also recognition of the moment that God was faithful
- 17:03to provide for them in that year and that He has come through yet
- 17:07again. It's really putting into focus
- 17:10their present and their past. But I want you to see one of the
- 17:15instructions of how they were to make these tents go to Leviticus
- 17:1823 in verse 40. Leviticus 23, verse 40.
- 17:37The Lord says to this people, and you shall take on the first
- 17:41day the fruit of splendid trees, branches of palm trees, and bows
- 17:48of leafy trees, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice
- 17:52before the Lord your God. Seven days.
- 17:56Now if you're a note taker, when you go to Nehemiah 8, you'll see
- 18:01that these branches that were called to be collected were
- 18:04actually the material for the tents.
- 18:07And in Leviticus 23 is the very first appearance of palm
- 18:10branches in the Bible. And as we mentioned, they are so
- 18:14associated with jubilation, excitement, thrill, delight with
- 18:19the truth of God and for the truth of God.
- 18:22So Israel was to take these palm branches, make these tents, live
- 18:26in them for that week, and realize God at this final moment
- 18:30of the harvest season has come through for us.
- 18:33And it didn't just happen this past year.
- 18:34God has always been for us. God's presence has always met us
- 18:38and always provided and protected us.
- 18:40It's a wonderful thing, a wonderful climax to their
- 18:44celebrations. And now we come to Revelation 7
- 18:47and we see the redeemed from all nations, all tribes brought
- 18:50before the throne of God coming out of the great tribulation,
- 18:53and they're celebrating with palm branches in their hands.
- 18:55What are they doing with those? Could it be that they are
- 18:58celebrating for the same reason that they would have in the
- 19:02Feast of Booths? A little bit different though,
- 19:08because this group now represents the final gathering
- 19:12not of produce, not of fruit, but of souls.
- 19:16That as we are approaching the end of time, God is now bringing
- 19:20in more people to add to the number of the redeemed.
- 19:24And this harvest out of the great Tribulation is recognizing
- 19:27that. That as we are coming to the end
- 19:29of all things in the same way that the Feast of Booth signaled
- 19:32the end of that year, we're part of the harvest.
- 19:36We've been gathered in, we're saved.
- 19:39God is faithful. Moreover, are they not also
- 19:43recognizing that they are now eternally provided for,
- 19:47protected by the unfiltered presence of God, That God now is
- 19:53tabernacling with us, He is dwelling with us, we are with
- 19:57Him forever and ever. I believe So even in this do we
- 20:00see a wonderful connection with the rest of Scripture?
- 20:03A small detail as the palm branches can have so much
- 20:06richness to it. These are the people described.
- 20:09I'm sure we can go over every single thing that's mentioned,
- 20:11but we have to now go on to the praise that is provided.
- 20:15Look again at verse 11 of Revelation 7.
- 20:20As the people of God from all nations and tribes and tongues
- 20:23are rejoicing, the angels and the heavenly host now
- 20:26spontaneously join them. And I want you to see how, yes,
- 20:31verse 11 describes them, but you come to verse 12 and you see the
- 20:35attributes that they ascribe to the Lord.
- 20:37There's several of them. Look again at verse 12, saying
- 20:41Amen, blessing and glory and wisdom and Thanksgiving and
- 20:46honor and power, and might be to our God forever and ever.
- 20:50Amen. Now does this refrain sound
- 20:53familiar? It should, because we've seen it
- 20:57before, earlier in Revelation. And when you compare the similar
- 21:02refrain, you'll learn at least two things about praise.
- 21:07Look back at Revelation 5, when the same heavenly host offered
- 21:11their praise to the Lord before any of those seals were broken,
- 21:15when the Lamb received the scroll from the Father's hand,
- 21:19the people broke out and praised these creatures in another
- 21:22realm. And look at verse 11 of
- 21:23Revelation 5. John says in verse 11.
- 21:27Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living
- 21:30creatures and the elders, the voice of many angels, numbering
- 21:34myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud
- 21:37voice, Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and
- 21:42wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.
- 21:50Two things to learn about praise.
- 21:52Here's the first Almost identical wording, right?
- 21:58Different order, different order.
- 22:01Compare it. And that's intentional.
- 22:05That's intentional because if these worshippers repeated the
- 22:08very same words in the exact same way, we might be left with
- 22:12the impression that heavenly praise is a monotonous routine.
- 22:17There are already people, Christians, who think that
- 22:20worship in heaven eventually is going to get stale.
- 22:24I mean, how much variety can you come up with?
- 22:27It's just going to become this tedious repetition.
- 22:32But I find something instructive about this subtle hint when you
- 22:35compare these two refrains, that praise in heaven will always be
- 22:42fresh. That praise in heaven will
- 22:46always be zealous and meaningful and responsive to the
- 22:50revelations of who God is. As those revelations will be
- 22:53unfolding throughout eternity And before you and I get to our
- 23:01heavenly home, I believe we also have to be making the effort to
- 23:05keep our praise dynamic and heartfelt.
- 23:08Now, even now, the Lord is not interesting and interested in
- 23:14the sacrifice of praise that just repeats words off the
- 23:17screen that don't spring from the depths of your soul.
- 23:21And if you're a person in here who struggles to sing, singing
- 23:24is very important to the Christian faith because it's
- 23:26important to God. But if you struggle and many
- 23:28people do, I want to encourage you.
- 23:31The Holy Spirit is here to help you because one of the outcomes
- 23:34of being filled with the Holy Spirit according to Ephesians 5,
- 23:37is that one will make melody to the Lord.
- 23:40From where? From their heart, Not just here,
- 23:45not just here, from here, the depths of who you are.
- 23:50One of the ways you know that you're filled with the Spirit is
- 23:53that you can sing from your heart.
- 23:55You mean it, You delighted it, It excites you.
- 23:58And as one preacher said, the Holy Spirit is able to help us
- 24:05hear an old song as though it was new, or to open our eyes and
- 24:10our hearts to a completely new song to add to our list of
- 24:13praise. It will always be a special
- 24:18thing to sing to God in heaven. But there's a second thing to
- 24:23consider, and that is the placement of the praise.
- 24:27So in Revelation 5, as I mentioned, the people are
- 24:30singing to the Lord, worshiping Lord, falling on their face the
- 24:34moment that the Lamb took the scroll into his own possession.
- 24:39But when you go to Revelation 7, they're singing similarly when
- 24:43the seals on the scroll are near its completion in their opening.
- 24:48What's the lesson? That in every season God is
- 24:51worthy of praise. That's the truth.
- 24:54That no matter what He is doing at this moment, He deserves
- 24:57glory with praise always. So in Revelation 5, they are
- 25:02rejoicing together and what Christ is about to do.
- 25:07Revelation 7, they're singing about what Christ has already
- 25:10accomplished. You and I must do the same.
- 25:14When we come here together, we're looking forward to what
- 25:16the Lord will do, and we sing about it, but we also come to
- 25:19celebrate what He's already done.
- 25:21It's a wonderful instruction about how praise works in God's
- 25:24economy. But now we come to the longest
- 25:27part and the most important in terms of this message being
- 25:30conveyed to the hearts of God's people for this time.
- 25:33And that's the promise. There's a promise that is made.
- 25:37Look at verse 13 of Revelation 7, as is heavenly choirs
- 25:42crowning the Lord with their worship.
- 25:43One of the 24 elders turns and asks John a question.
- 25:47Verse 13 that one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are
- 25:50these clothed in white robes and from where have they come?
- 25:56I said to him, Sir, you know and he said to me, these are the
- 26:00ones coming out of the great tribulation.
- 26:02They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of
- 26:05the Lamb. So the elder one of them looks
- 26:09at John and he says, do you know who this group is?
- 26:13He says, Sir, you know, that's just another way of saying, I
- 26:15don't, you know, I don't know. Now, you would think that the
- 26:20answer was obvious, right? I mean, any Christian can look
- 26:23at this scene and say these are believers who've been saved.
- 26:26Why does John not know? Let me give you an idea, because
- 26:31you look back and you realize that he saw what a great
- 26:34multitude that no one can number from every nation, from all
- 26:36tribes and peoples and languages standing before the throne.
- 26:39I think the enormous size and the diversity shocked John to
- 26:43the point where he didn't really know how to identify them.
- 26:45Remember, we're we're talking about the same John who early in
- 26:48Revelation was used by Christ to minister to a handful of local
- 26:52churches who most of them were experienced great persecution.
- 26:56He was living at a time when Christianity was under severe
- 26:59attack. And so now he's transported into
- 27:03this vision from ministering to these believers who are
- 27:06suffering in their own way, suffering externally, even
- 27:08internally in terms of faithfulness to truth.
- 27:12And then now he sees the sea of people that he can't even
- 27:14number. Are these really Christians?
- 27:18Are they really among those who are called to the narrow path?
- 27:24He couldn't register it. And so the Lord uses one of the
- 27:28elders to confirm it. These are those who've been
- 27:31saved by the blood of the Lamb. Now, he describes in two ways.
- 27:39The first is that they are coming out of the great
- 27:42tribulation. We saw that earlier.
- 27:44These are the ones coming out of this period of time.
- 27:47And we understand this to mean that the followers of Christ
- 27:51here are those who precede the second coming.
- 27:55But we also see something here about the believer today.
- 27:58Even though this is describing something to come, it says
- 28:01something about every believer, every age, that a true Christian
- 28:05is someone who will go through many tribulations and make it
- 28:12they will endure until the end. That's true for any person who
- 28:18claims to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.
- 28:20Not the absence of troubles, but the endurance in them and
- 28:24through them. They are coming out, not that
- 28:27they've escaped, but that they have succeeded in responding to
- 28:32these problems that came their way.
- 28:34And that is the mark of a true Christian.
- 28:36But we see something else here. This quality of devotion, right?
- 28:40This faithfulness until the end is the result of a saving act of
- 28:44faith. What does he say about them?
- 28:46Yes, they've come out of the great tribulation, but they have
- 28:48also washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the
- 28:53Lamb. That was the cause of the
- 28:57faithfulness. It's not their faithfulness that
- 29:00made them worthy. It's not their faithfulness that
- 29:02made them clean. It's not their faithfulness that
- 29:04erased their sin. They were faithful because
- 29:07they've been washed. Don't you think it's a strange
- 29:11image to say that these robes have been made white by blood?
- 29:18Blood stains? So this is clearly symbolic and
- 29:24this is a very powerful message, strange to the new reader
- 29:28perhaps, but not strange to the Christian or understands what
- 29:31the blood of Christ can do. What this shows is that the
- 29:36worthiness of this people standing before God without
- 29:39fear, with complete joy, is because of something outside of
- 29:43themselves that is cleanse them. They have not been made white
- 29:46because of what they've produced in themselves.
- 29:48It's something outside of them that has enabled them and
- 29:52extracted these things. And that is something to
- 29:56consider because the gospel message that will save them then
- 30:01is the same gospel message that saves people.
- 30:03Now, there's not going to be a different gospel in the
- 30:06tribulation period. It's going to be the same truth
- 30:09that will reel in souls that are open to being under the lordship
- 30:13of Christ. Now here's what's amazing in the
- 30:18average mind, being religious is about doing your part over a
- 30:21lifetime to scrub away the sins that have stained your life, the
- 30:26sins of your own actions and your own attitudes.
- 30:30And so they work hard and they try to remove those stains and
- 30:33they try to remove all their past, and they try to remove all
- 30:35their habits and their reputation so that they can be
- 30:37more acceptable, They can be more attractive to God.
- 30:41But a true Christian is someone who hears Christ say, I alone
- 30:46can make you clean, and you take your heart that is stained with
- 30:52sin, and you joyfully give it to him, and allow his blood to make
- 30:57it all white. That's a true Christian.
- 31:01Does it perform in their garments, but removes them and
- 31:07let's Christ take them and wash them, and do with them what no
- 31:12man can do for you. But notice how the elder says
- 31:16what they have washed their robes.
- 31:21Who did it? God.
- 31:22That God forced them to wash their robes?
- 31:25No, Christ has done his part by shedding his blood.
- 31:29They made the conscience choice of taking their robes,
- 31:31acknowledging the cleansing force of that sacrifice, and
- 31:35allowing that agent to do the work.
- 31:41So it's really up to you, it's up to every person to recognize
- 31:47what the Lord has done and then to respond to it.
- 31:49No one can blame God for their unbelief.
- 31:52No one can blame God for them not having the chance of being
- 31:57saved. They have washed their robes,
- 32:00Have you? That's the question today, have
- 32:05you? A lot of churches are filling up
- 32:07these days because of recent events, and I'm glad that's
- 32:09happening. And I think it's one of the
- 32:11greatest evangelistic opportunities of our time.
- 32:15So as much as we're teaching through Revelation, I can't help
- 32:17myself but preach the gospel and use this to perhaps point out
- 32:21anybody who is an unbelief, who has not said with confidence,
- 32:25yes, I made the conscious choice to be washed by His blood.
- 32:29You can do it today and it's up to you.
- 32:33So I, my, my desire really is that you can walk out of here
- 32:37with absolute assurance that even if heaven testifies against
- 32:40you, they can say he or she has washed their robe in the blood
- 32:44of the Lamb. And you can have that confidence
- 32:49by the Spirit if you truly repent and believe they have
- 32:54done it. Now here's what's amazing.
- 32:58He now goes on to give the promise that awaits the person
- 33:03who has done this. It's not just for this group in
- 33:05the great Tribulation. It's for any person who has
- 33:08followed their example in washing themselves in Christ's
- 33:11love. Forgiveness and cleansing is
- 33:15just, it's just the beginning. There are three main future
- 33:18pledges that are described here that I want us to consider
- 33:21before we close. Three things that are
- 33:23guaranteed. You believer if you can say I'm
- 33:26clean because of his blood. Three things.
- 33:31The first one might be the most surprising #1 this is your
- 33:34promise we will serve him. What do I mean by that?
- 33:42Look again here at verse 15. Therefore what is therefore?
- 33:47Therefore, as a result of them being cleansed by the blood of
- 33:51the Lamb, therefore they are before the throne of God and
- 33:54serve Him day and night in His temple, and he who sits on the
- 34:00throne will shelter them with His presence.
- 34:05This is more than just a description of the activity that
- 34:08will happen in the world to come.
- 34:10It's phrased in a way to stir up anticipation.
- 34:16You have to remember, only Levites were permitted to serve
- 34:21God in the temple in the Old Testament, right?
- 34:24Not every Jew, even among the Jews, only one specific line
- 34:28from one particular tribe. We're permitted to serve God in
- 34:31that capacity. And what is now God saying here
- 34:35about those who've washed the robes in above the Lamb there
- 34:39before the throne, and serve him day, night in his temple?
- 34:42Now it's access to everybody. Now it's made available to all
- 34:46tribes and all tongues and all nations.
- 34:47Now we all have been given that privilege to serve God.
- 34:50That's true today, and that's true for the world to come in.
- 34:53In what way? What's the full nature of
- 34:55serving God in heaven? I'm not sure, but I'm sure it
- 34:59includes some realization of what we do here on earth, though
- 35:02imperfectly and in weakness. I find it amazing that one of
- 35:08the promises for us is that we will serve God.
- 35:13Serve God. I'm not sure how many Christians
- 35:17see that as a heavenly thing, but it but it is.
- 35:22And if heaven is associated with heavenly bliss and eternal
- 35:25delight, then obviously the equation is that there's
- 35:30something about serving God that unlocks that kind of joy and the
- 35:33light. And I want to challenge any
- 35:38believer here who may not be actively serving God, who may
- 35:45not be serving him intentionally, Consciously.
- 35:48You're just kind of consuming Christian content and messages,
- 35:53but you're not exercising your faith.
- 35:56Notice something here, if you want to make your life more
- 35:59heavenly, then you have to imitate heavenly activity.
- 36:05And part of that is that with all your limitations and all
- 36:08your responsibilities that you seek God and you say, Lord, what
- 36:11is it that you want me to do to serve you now?
- 36:15What is it that you want me to do now to actually honor you in
- 36:17this way? And I assure you, based on the
- 36:19inside of this verse, if you tap into that, then you will know a
- 36:23deep otherworldly contentment because you were created for it.
- 36:29You were made to serve God. Imagine this.
- 36:32We will serve God in the world to come.
- 36:38And so you and I can know something about the fragrance
- 36:41and the the light of that world to come.
- 36:44If you seek to imitate the activity that is presented to us
- 36:47here. We will serve him.
- 36:48That's a promise. And for those who serve God now
- 36:51that should be exciting because you know the joy of honoring God
- 36:54in that way. But secondly, we will be safe
- 36:57with him. We will be safe with him.
- 36:59Look at here at verse 16. They shall hunger no more,
- 37:02neither thirst anymore. The sun shall not strike them
- 37:05nor any scorching heat. So you have the the fears and
- 37:10the heartaches and the discomforts of this life.
- 37:14The things that we are all vulnerable to will suddenly come
- 37:17to an end. They will no longer threaten
- 37:20you. And I listen.
- 37:23Even the very environment of heaven will be pleasurable, will
- 37:27be cooperative. There won't even be a hint of
- 37:32anything making us uncomfortable in that kind of an atmosphere.
- 37:36The sun itself will always be to our contentment and our joy, not
- 37:43like the unpredictable elements of this life.
- 37:47And there's something here about the contrast between what is
- 37:51provided in terms of shelter and what is promised to the wicked,
- 37:55even in the tribulation period. Notice what's mentioned here.
- 37:58Water the sun. Go to Revelation 16.
- 38:06This is describing the bold judgments, the last sequence of
- 38:09judgments that will be poured out on the earth.
- 38:11And notice what happens early in those series of executions.
- 38:16Revelation 16 Four. The third Angel poured out his
- 38:19bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they
- 38:23became blood. In other words, they weren't
- 38:26able to drink it anymore. It was poisoned.
- 38:30Look at verse 8. The 4th Angel poured out his
- 38:33bowl on the sun, and it was allowed to scorch people with
- 38:37fire. Do you see the comparison?
- 38:42Our future is much different than the future of the wicked,
- 38:46and you've heard this many times before.
- 38:47For us, this world is the closest thing to experiencing
- 38:51hell. But for the wicked, this is the
- 38:55closest thing that they will ever know of Paradise.
- 39:01We won't thirst, we won't hunger.
- 39:04The sun won't burn us. When it comes to Revelation 16,
- 39:07the wicked, their future is much different.
- 39:09They can't drink, they will scour for food, and the very sun
- 39:14will torture them for all of eternity.
- 39:20We'll be unharmed. We will be the safest that we've
- 39:24ever been. And lastly, my favorite, not
- 39:29only will we serve Him, not only will we be sheltered and safe
- 39:31with them, but we will also be satisfied in Him.
- 39:34Look at verse 17 of Revelation 7.
- 39:38For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
- 39:44and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God
- 39:48will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
- 39:51What an amazing reminder of the manifold beauty of Christ.
- 39:55Read your Bible slowly, would you?
- 39:56We're being told about the Lamb who's also a shepherd.
- 40:01How does that work? Lamb and a shepherd.
- 40:07You know why that's being described to us in this way?
- 40:08To show us that Christ is All in all.
- 40:12No matter what you need, you can find it in Him.
- 40:16He is the ultimate sacrifice that can save us.
- 40:19He's the Lamb, and at the same time He's the strong Shepherd
- 40:22who can guide us and shield us and protect us all the days of
- 40:26our lives up into eternity. He's everything.
- 40:30No matter what your soul needs, you can tap into it and taste it
- 40:34in Jesus. And notice how this, the springs
- 40:40of living water that he will lead us to, is not in the
- 40:43singular, but in the plural. It's not a spring, it's springs.
- 40:47And you might have a different translation that reads fountain,
- 40:49but even if you have that, it doesn't say fountain, but
- 40:52fountains referring to the abundant, unending, overflowing
- 40:59provision that fulfills the deepest longings of the human
- 41:02heart. And you can't miss how we can
- 41:09have access to this eternal reality.
- 41:11It can't be an it can't be known apart from what He will guide
- 41:15them. That's the middle of verse 17.
- 41:19He will guide them. Only when you put your hand in
- 41:23the hand of him can you be led to this kind of experience that
- 41:29will never be interrupted. And here's the thing, Christ is
- 41:35the only road map to that promise.
- 41:40And it's true even today. This is not just speaking about
- 41:43what's going to be known in the world to come.
- 41:46You and I can sample on that living water day by day.
- 41:50Now there are some miserable Christians, and some of you
- 41:56might even be here, miserable, joyless, frustrated.
- 42:07You know sin is wrong, but for whatever reason in your mind you
- 42:09think that it actually tastes better than what Christ has to
- 42:11offer. That is not what Christianity is
- 42:16about. Yes, this, this flesh does tempt
- 42:20us. It does lie to us.
- 42:21It does remind us of some of the things that we know, knew before
- 42:24we came to Christ. But all that is being described
- 42:27here is experiential. It's real, it can be owned, and
- 42:33it can be known. And I want to tell you this, the
- 42:38way to claim it is no different here.
- 42:41We're told that in eternity He will guide them to these living
- 42:45waters and he's willing to guide you now.
- 42:51But you have to stop leading yourself and you, you have to
- 42:55stop chasing all these different options, all these different
- 42:58avenues, all these different things and just give yourself to
- 43:02his leadership completely. How do I do that?
- 43:04You come to what his word says. You do and you do it.
- 43:08You just do it by faith with desperation.
- 43:12You don't give up. You say, Lord, if this is
- 43:15possible, I want to know it. I'm I wasn't planning to end
- 43:18here. Let's end here.
- 43:20Go to first Peter 1 and look at verse 8 because I want, I don't
- 43:32want to give the impression that everything that we just read
- 43:34there about how we will serve Him and how we will be safe with
- 43:36Him and how we will be satisfied in Him, it's just something that
- 43:39we have to wait for. Yes, it will be on a level that
- 43:43requires glorified bodies to endure.
- 43:46But look at this verse eight of first Peter 1.
- 43:49Though you have not seen him, you love him.
- 43:51That's a miracle in itself. How do you love somebody you've
- 43:54never seen before? It's because you're more than
- 43:57just flesh and bones. You're a spirit being, and when
- 44:00you get saved, your spiritual eyes open to who Christ is, and
- 44:02you fall in love with Him. Though you have not seen Him,
- 44:06you love Him, Though you do not now see Him, you believe in Him.
- 44:11He doesn't stop there and rejoice with joy that is
- 44:15inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of
- 44:20your faith, the salvation of your souls.
- 44:25You can ask different people today what makes them happy, but
- 44:31there is a level of happiness that you can't even explain, and
- 44:34it's only in Christ, inexpressible.
- 44:38I have no expressions to tell you the joy I feel for someone
- 44:42that I've never seen before, for someone that I just believe and
- 44:46trust in because He's given me His Word.
- 44:50Do you have that joy And I know it fluctuates and I know it gets
- 44:52difficult that sometimes I know sometimes it's it's this paradox
- 44:55of rejoicing but suffering. I get it.
- 44:58But but do you know it on any level?
- 45:01Can you hear Peter and say I know what that's like.
- 45:05And if you don't take the instruction from the end of
- 45:07Revelation 7. Let Christ guide you there, ask
- 45:10for it and watch him lead you to it.
- 45:15Brothers and sisters, although we are looking at a great
- 45:17tribulation harvest, the truths here are for us today and I hope
- 45:22you will take it to heart. Lord, we thank you for these
- 45:25truths and we ask, oh God, that we would be able to, by Your
- 45:32grace, know again this joy that is inexpressible and filled with
- 45:35glory. If anybody here is not born
- 45:42again, please, Lord, hear our prayers on their behalf that
- 45:48they would be saved, truly saved.
- 45:52And for the believer here who is struggling, barely made it to
- 45:55the service today. May their future home and their
- 46:00present promises at their disposal deliver them from
- 46:04despondency and discouragement. And may they actually know a new
- 46:09strength as they follow you. Thank you, O God, that you are a
- 46:12faithful King. What you've said you will
- 46:16perform and you've shown us here more than once how you are
- 46:20dependable. We love you and we honor you and
- 46:23we sing to you from our hearts and Jesus name we pray.
- 46:27Amen and Amen can we stand together?
