- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to Just the Cats with Michael Bennett.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Hello, Big Blue Nation, Welcome to Justin Kats. My name
- 0:15Speaker 2: is Michael Bennett. On this Wednesday, April twenty oh, terrible, rainy,
- 0:22Speaker 2: disgusting Wednesday. Out here at the backside of Churchill Down.
- 0:25Speaker 3: No, don't you. Don't you talk bad about it. It's
- 0:28Speaker 3: always a great day on the backside of church and Down.
- 0:30Speaker 3: It's Michael Bennett.
- 0:32Speaker 2: He's talking to I.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Don't care, I'm coming in high.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I love it when Nick Rouse joins because exactly, and
- 0:42Speaker 2: I'm glad you don't care, because it doesn't make any
- 0:44Speaker 2: difference to me. But Justin, Mickkaylin's with us. Nick Rouse
- 0:48Speaker 2: is with us. So you know, we changed his name
- 0:50Speaker 2: for this show.
- 0:50Speaker 3: You know. You know that, don't you? Just justin?
- 0:53Speaker 2: He goes by Justin? Okay, did you call him anything
- 0:55Speaker 2: you want?
- 0:56Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, just just call him for dinner, right, that's
- 0:59Speaker 3: that thing sounds say, yeah, there we go, there we go.
- 1:03Speaker 2: But uh yeah, but it's okay. I like the fact
- 1:07Speaker 2: that you're here for a little bit. I think you
- 1:09Speaker 2: should be here.
- 1:10Speaker 3: For a little bit.
- 1:10Speaker 2: More than just a little bit. We have I have
- 1:13Speaker 2: so much to talk to you about and it's not
- 1:16Speaker 2: just Derby, because you know, it seems like you and
- 1:18Speaker 2: I within the UK media, you and I are the
- 1:21Speaker 2: only ones that have such an infinity for.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Horse racing.
- 1:26Speaker 2: There's nobody else out there.
- 1:28Speaker 3: There's some TV folks who like who enjoy covering it,
- 1:30Speaker 3: but I don't think they're they're junkies who need it all.
- 1:35Speaker 2: No, no, no, I said, you'stening.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I was just looking for an excuse.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Park ahead and go.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I figure I can say something and find people to
- 1:50Speaker 2: talk to me the next two hours. That's the one
- 1:52Speaker 2: thing you can tell. You can tell justin you know,
- 1:57Speaker 2: I stop random people to get them to talk to us.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I think the the wild part of just hanging out
- 2:06Speaker 3: back here, it's like you never know who you're gonna
- 2:07Speaker 3: rain into the rain. The rain has caused the crowds
- 2:11Speaker 3: to die down quite a bit. I know that the
- 2:13Speaker 3: governor was here, the chief police, but there weren't as
- 2:16Speaker 3: many dignitaries and his other sort of random folks around.
- 2:19Speaker 3: But I say that because last year I was hanging
- 2:22Speaker 3: out with you and you bought on the stallion's manager
- 2:25Speaker 3: from Spinthrift Farms, and now Mark Toothacher is making headline
- 2:29Speaker 3: news the like this isn't this isn't just like, all right,
- 2:34Speaker 3: this is a horse racing story. No, because it's also
- 2:36Speaker 3: an NFL story.
- 2:38Speaker 2: It's a national story that like.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Every NFL reporter is talking about, right, And what we
- 2:42Speaker 3: are talking about is how Mark Toothacher, I love this story,
- 2:47Speaker 3: was watching the New York Football Giants because he knows
- 2:50Speaker 3: Dale Robinson.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Well, hold on, let's start from the very beginning. What
- 2:53Speaker 2: was it Tuesday night? You texted me? Is this the
- 2:56Speaker 2: same Mark Toothacher? And I'm like, I'm trying to think
- 2:59Speaker 2: what you talking about? And I'm like, oh, the story
- 3:03Speaker 2: because said yes, that's him.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Go ahead. I went back and even found the podcast
- 3:07Speaker 3: where he Yeah, so that that that exists still in
- 3:11Speaker 3: the world. If you want to hear Mark Toothacher talk
- 3:13Speaker 3: about spin Throft with us from a year ago. Yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 3: but I find that I scrolled down just to cats
- 3:18Speaker 3: podcast job. Yeah, dude, you just live on the internet, man.
- 3:21Speaker 3: It's not that hard.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Investigative reporters exactly journalism, bro.
- 3:25Speaker 4: We not know that Mark Toothache or anything.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Oh, because it's really hard to go back and see
- 3:29Speaker 3: what days of Derby weeks are you click around.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Exactly and then you put on their mark too.
- 3:34Speaker 3: He actually did it. Yeah, yeah, I had to. I
- 3:37Speaker 3: had to do some digging. I'd be like, all right,
- 3:38Speaker 3: here's here's me talking is somewhere there. But the row
- 3:41Speaker 3: point is he's watching one day on Monday night football
- 3:44Speaker 3: and Young Wayku goes back to kick and he Young
- 3:48Speaker 3: Wayku didn't miss the kick. He didn't just miss it.
- 3:51Speaker 3: He like his foot dug into the ground like a
- 3:53Speaker 3: foot behind the football. And the headline is the story
- 3:59Speaker 3: Kentucky Man and suffered seizure. Laughing at Young way Who's
- 4:02Speaker 3: kit he laughs so hard and I gotta tell you
- 4:05Speaker 3: I was in that, like you're laughing so hard that
- 4:07Speaker 3: you're rewinding it. Yes, but yeah, Mark suffered a seizure
- 4:10Speaker 3: and it turns out that seizure they found they went
- 4:13Speaker 3: took him in and had a CT scan found it.
- 4:15Speaker 3: He had a tumor and.
- 4:15Speaker 2: It Yes, that is just isn't that crazy?
- 4:21Speaker 3: And like the fact that something so random, well and
- 4:25Speaker 3: it was. It was random. Like the part that he
- 4:27Speaker 3: wanted to convey it was like, I'm lucky that this
- 4:29Speaker 3: happened when it did. Yeah, no offense to Young Waykup,
- 4:32Speaker 3: but thank you for sucking so bad because if I'm driving,
- 4:35Speaker 3: or if I was traveling, or You're right, horses like
- 4:38Speaker 3: horses are dangerous animals. Yes, like that could have been
- 4:41Speaker 3: an awful situation. Fortunately the tumor was benign and got
- 4:44Speaker 3: taken out. But that headline and I don't have the
- 4:46Speaker 3: exact verbiage that was going around like wildfire the other night,
- 4:49Speaker 3: because it is it is. It is quite a doozy.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I doubt young Waykup sees the same levity in it
- 4:56Speaker 3: because he was once the most accurate kicker in the NFL,
- 4:58Speaker 3: and I don't think he has a job now.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Well, he's coming to the Derby this weekend as a
- 5:02Speaker 2: part of Mark Toothakers. He actually he is coming to
- 5:05Speaker 2: the with them, which I think is the coolest. Am
- 5:08Speaker 2: I talking to you loud?
- 5:09Speaker 3: Okay? Sorry about it's okay, go back to my golf voice.
- 5:15Speaker 3: We're having a good time.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Come on, I am going to talk loud. I'm so sorry,
- 5:18Speaker 2: but I don't need to apologize. But yeah, I that
- 5:22Speaker 2: was one of the feel good stories. Of course, you
- 5:24Speaker 2: know there was a guy out here on the fence
- 5:26Speaker 2: behind a camera, uh that was doing a story a
- 5:30Speaker 2: little bit earlier. This weekend, butchering it because talking about
- 5:34Speaker 2: this horse name so Happy, and uh.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Call him out, Michael. Let's bring him over.
- 5:41Speaker 2: All right, yeah, Dale Romans just passing by.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Well, we'll have him on a little bit. Okay, okay,
- 5:45Speaker 3: if you.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Have special questions for him, you can ask has special answers,
- 5:49Speaker 2: especially when you're running for senate.
- 5:51Speaker 3: But and especially the bozo that he's talking about is me.
- 5:55Speaker 3: I was, yeah, so he he had correct So Happy, which,
- 6:00Speaker 3: by the way, So Happy taken a lot of early money, Michael.
- 6:03Speaker 3: But a lot of people are liking So Happy. Well,
- 6:06Speaker 3: I put a post up of him on TikTok. Wait, Michael,
- 6:11Speaker 3: you're on TikTok.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Michael, I am.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I am a man of the people of the youth.
- 6:15Speaker 3: I am. I am all about talk okay or a
- 6:18Speaker 3: tick or whatever it is.
- 6:20Speaker 2: The video I put up has got sixty five thousand
- 6:24Speaker 2: people that have responded.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Wow, so incredible. I am on the tick or the talk.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Oh man, I'm what does that surprise you? I'm on TikTok.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I mean I've got the mentality of a sixteen year old.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Okay, that is true, that is true. I just imagine
- 6:41Speaker 3: TikTok as a service for the youths.
- 6:43Speaker 2: I am not on the TikTok. You should be maybe
- 6:47Speaker 2: maybe one day you're more mature than me. I mean
- 6:49Speaker 2: I am not of a maturer person.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Well, you know what, that's why that's why we work out.
- 6:54Speaker 3: We get along because we can sit here have a
- 6:56Speaker 3: good time derby. Are you how do you partake in
- 7:00Speaker 3: your derby enjoying? Because I know that you are a horseman,
- 7:06Speaker 3: So do you do you come back here in kind
- 7:08Speaker 3: of tailgate? Do you? Or do you? Are you on
- 7:09Speaker 3: the are you fancymancy on the front side?
- 7:13Speaker 2: So we have guests coming in town that stay with us,
- 7:16Speaker 2: and uh so we're we're sitting over there Friday and Saturday.
- 7:20Speaker 2: They come in tomorrow and we are here Friday and Saturday.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Okay, how what what is the box seating experience like
- 7:27Speaker 3: at the derby? Because I I'm never gonna see it,
- 7:31Speaker 3: you know, so.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Something it is.
- 7:35Speaker 3: It is funny like the evolution over the years where
- 7:37Speaker 3: like you know, my parents used to know somebody that
- 7:39Speaker 3: would get tickets and then we then we go to
- 7:41Speaker 3: the paddock and then we get kicked out of their
- 7:43Speaker 3: Now we're in the infield, but there is a I'm
- 7:45Speaker 3: one of those. I don't know if I've ever actually
- 7:47Speaker 3: purchased tickets to go to a race truck because I
- 7:49Speaker 3: like to be up and at him. I like to
- 7:52Speaker 3: be walking around the paddock. I like to be out
- 7:53Speaker 3: in the back. So like, do you do you enjoy
- 7:56Speaker 3: the new all inclusive box experience at the Kentucky Derby?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Uh? No, because I don't take advantage of the alcohol
- 8:06Speaker 2: or the food as much as I should.
- 8:08Speaker 3: No, I don't.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I mean I don't eat as much as I used to.
- 8:12Speaker 3: I'm not a big drinker. I mean I just not
- 8:16Speaker 3: alcohol as much as I would like to have a drink.
- 8:18Speaker 2: It gives me headaches? Does the do you take?
- 8:21Speaker 3: The lines? Are better? Because of like I would.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Wonder if you're giving away where I'm going to be sitting.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I'm sitting in an area that's not really crowded.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Okay, ah.
- 8:35Speaker 2: See, I know, yeah, you know, I knew as soon
- 8:39Speaker 2: as this conversation was gonna start.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Michael's a little a different section than I walk. Yeah.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Thanks, there's gonna be oh hoity toity Michael Bennett. No,
- 8:50Speaker 2: this is not HOI I got.
- 8:51Speaker 4: I got a lot of letters on my credential, but
- 8:53Speaker 4: I probably can't get to work.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Michael, Hey, you got it by design.
- 8:58Speaker 3: By the way, Joe I got to say to Michael
- 9:02Speaker 3: last year, I, you know, I sometimes go places I
- 9:06Speaker 3: probably shouldn't be yeah to you know, pick up a
- 9:08Speaker 3: few drinks here and there. I made the mistake last
- 9:11Speaker 3: year of when I arrived at the track on Saturday.
- 9:14Speaker 3: You know, I'm not one of these guys who waits around.
- 9:16Speaker 3: I'm not here. If I'm not here for the first race,
- 9:18Speaker 3: I'm definitely here for the second. So I was like,
- 9:21Speaker 3: you know what, I was making my way to my
- 9:22Speaker 3: infield spot. It's right over there, that tree by the
- 9:25Speaker 3: first turn exactly. It's a great spot. You try to
- 9:29Speaker 3: take my spot, but I'm making my way there. I
- 9:34Speaker 3: was making my way there. I was like, you know,
- 9:36Speaker 3: I'll run in real quick and just grab a couple
- 9:38Speaker 3: of beers on the way out.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Well, when I went to walk in, I opened the
- 9:41Speaker 3: door and it was only people who work there. I'm like, oh, crap,
- 9:44Speaker 3: I forgot the people who actually go to use these
- 9:47Speaker 3: seats do not show up when the races start. And uh,
- 9:51Speaker 3: they had to. They had to put up a It
- 9:54Speaker 3: wasn't a sign, but the security was awarded. Do not
- 9:57Speaker 3: let this man into this section anymore. So you don't
- 10:01Speaker 3: use your credential to get on the other side. I
- 10:04Speaker 3: will maybe a little bit, but sometimes like walking.
- 10:06Speaker 2: You know, as he knows, as you know all the
- 10:09Speaker 2: listeners know that listen to show on a regular basis.
- 10:12Speaker 3: I I deal with anxiety.
- 10:13Speaker 2: I don't like crowds, and so like clearing out here
- 10:17Speaker 2: makes me feel so much better. So when I need
- 10:20Speaker 2: to get away. You see the lights above all of
- 10:24Speaker 2: Churchill downs over there on the other side, the ones
- 10:27Speaker 2: that are turned off. There's only two that are turned off.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I go up there and watch a couple of races.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Nice nobody, I'm literally and of course we can go
- 10:36Speaker 2: up there. There's only like four people up there, and
- 10:39Speaker 2: I get to reset and relax and I'm I'm okay now.
- 10:42Speaker 3: So that's that's where I like to go.
- 10:45Speaker 4: I am curious how to get up there. It's easy,
- 10:48Speaker 4: all right.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I promise you it's easy, and I've been up there.
- 10:51Speaker 3: You gotta take the box stairwell.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Exactly, yes, you take you take the elevator as high
- 10:56Speaker 2: as you can go, and then you take the backstairwells.
- 10:58Speaker 3: That's right around where Travis Stone then calling the race
- 11:05Speaker 3: you see where.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Yes, exactly, So I am to the left there watching.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I got a couple of recordings of races last year.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I love it there.
- 11:13Speaker 3: But Travis Stone, he's a real one. Oh, it looks
- 11:16Speaker 3: like Michael's gonna have a special guest.
- 11:18Speaker 2: On all right, ned Toffee's going to join us in
- 11:21Speaker 2: a minute from sin I Uh, it's a shame that
- 11:25Speaker 2: Ted Noffe did not get I wanted to talk to him.
- 11:29Speaker 3: We can get. But overall, though, Michael, what's our pulse
- 11:35Speaker 3: on like the actual race?
- 11:38Speaker 2: Well, this is the thing that's different completely from last year.
- 11:42Speaker 2: You know, last year it was it was a race
- 11:44Speaker 2: between two horses, and truth of the matter is it
- 11:49Speaker 2: really was one horse to win. Uh, and that was Sovereignty.
- 11:52Speaker 2: You look at Sovereignty today. He is an athletic, big horse.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Nobody was going to beat that horse.
- 11:59Speaker 3: You know.
- 11:59Speaker 2: The horse I'm talking about is journalism.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Right, And I just I like journalism because of that
- 12:03Speaker 3: Preatnus win. You know, doesn't matter what you throw at him.
- 12:06Speaker 3: He's just he's a he's a race horse.
- 12:08Speaker 2: But but honestly, if if if Sovereignty had run in Preatness,
- 12:13Speaker 2: it's still with a one. So I hate to inform no,
- 12:16Speaker 2: but here's what I think this year. I think that
- 12:19Speaker 2: it's really anybody's race. My pick early on was Ted Knaffy,
- 12:25Speaker 2: but then when they had to he had to bow
- 12:26Speaker 2: out because of injury and be sent back to the
- 12:29Speaker 2: farm from rest of relyactually, Relaxation Renegade seemed to be
- 12:33Speaker 2: that horse. But again you get the one pole and
- 12:37Speaker 2: and you look at that and you think that's not good,
- 12:40Speaker 2: and then there's really not a horse that stands.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Out Nick, No, no, no, I'm with you. I mean, Renegade
- 12:47Speaker 3: made an awesome last move in the Arkansas Derby, and
- 12:50Speaker 3: when I was watching that, I immediately was like texting
- 12:54Speaker 3: my dad. I was like, well, there's the that's the
- 12:55Speaker 3: that's what we've been waiting to see from this field
- 12:57Speaker 3: because there hadn't been really many emerged. But then Commandment
- 13:01Speaker 3: had a great closing run in the Florida Derby. And
- 13:04Speaker 3: I think the part that makes it fun, Michael, is
- 13:08Speaker 3: that now I can talk myself into some more horses
- 13:10Speaker 3: come up and win, and that's what it's it's most fun, right,
- 13:13Speaker 3: Like full effort out at Turfway Park further Ado. It's
- 13:18Speaker 3: hard to judge further ado because of how weak that
- 13:22Speaker 3: Bluegrass Stakes field was exactly. But when you run that
- 13:26Speaker 3: fast and you put them that far behind you, who's
- 13:30Speaker 3: to say he can't do it again? Especially with the
- 13:31Speaker 3: outside post. He can sit right off the pace. A
- 13:34Speaker 3: Japanese horse, they'll go fine up there and it'll be
- 13:36Speaker 3: a fast face. Yeah, and so he can just sit back.
- 13:40Speaker 3: So I'm I'm, I'm with you in that. It is.
- 13:44Speaker 3: It's fun being more wide open, and I I'm one
- 13:47Speaker 3: of those two. Michael. I always kind of like trying
- 13:49Speaker 3: to beat the favorite. So when Renegade got that one spot,
- 13:52Speaker 3: it actually made me mad because I'm like, oh man,
- 13:54Speaker 3: it's gonna take. There's not gonna be as much money
- 13:56Speaker 3: on Renegade as I initially thought, so, so I'm curious
- 14:00Speaker 3: if he's even gonna be the post time favorite. Early on.
- 14:05Speaker 3: I believe the Puma as of yesterday afternoon was actually
- 14:09Speaker 3: had the most money in the wind wind Pool. So
- 14:11Speaker 3: between Puma, Chief Wallaby is definitely gonna.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Get all these secret one there we go again. Yeah,
- 14:17Speaker 2: every time we say that, he's got to say it
- 14:19Speaker 2: in some fake Australian accent, but he actually does.
- 14:21Speaker 3: That's the one. But what's that His Australian accent is
- 14:26Speaker 3: not as bad as I thought it would be.
- 14:27Speaker 2: No, it's pretty good. But that's all it comes out though.
- 14:30Speaker 4: I can't say anything else. But I can say, Chief.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Wallaby, my issue, Michael tub of Chief w Allaby. You
- 14:36Speaker 3: ever had a horse where you bet it, you believe
- 14:38Speaker 3: in it, and it comes up short, and then you
- 14:41Speaker 3: bet it again, you believe in it comes up short,
- 14:44Speaker 3: and then you're like, I can't bet this horse again,
- 14:46Speaker 3: and then it finally wins. That's called journalism exactly. So
- 14:50Speaker 3: Chief Wallaby would be that horse for me, Like I can't.
- 14:53Speaker 3: I the Fountain of Youth and the Holy Bull. I
- 14:55Speaker 3: was like, I like Chief Wallaby. I saw the same
- 14:58Speaker 3: thing in the program the Junior overa the Bill Mott
- 15:01Speaker 3: like his horse looks a lot like sovereignty. And then
- 15:03Speaker 3: he's so close they're gonna throw blankers on him. I can't.
- 15:06Speaker 3: I can't abandon him now or else, you know, egg
- 15:09Speaker 3: on my face right.
- 15:10Speaker 2: See that's the way I am. I think two secret
- 15:13Speaker 2: ones out there. Not many people are talking about Golden Tempo,
- 15:17Speaker 2: who's by Golden pal Who. I'm a big fan of
- 15:20Speaker 2: Golden pal He's a great sire.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Question about Golden Tempo. Are you worried at all that? Yes?
- 15:25Speaker 3: About the cracked hoof? Oh? Absolutely, yeah, that's it is
- 15:30Speaker 3: called Cherry Devo correct, yeah, sorry, but you can call
- 15:34Speaker 3: her Sherry the the when I saw the cracked hoof
- 15:39Speaker 3: and then Renegade even has the little free quarter horseshoe.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Speaking of Cheri Devo, Oh right right there, perfect morning Cheri.
- 15:48Speaker 2: So you know her husband's a huge fan of this show,
- 15:51Speaker 2: by the way, Oh, David and Gordo.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Oh shut up, David, Yeah, exactly, he lists show.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Something wrong with him?
- 15:57Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. Ouch, he's a he's a huge UK fan. Michael,
- 16:01Speaker 3: I've got you need somebody to bust your chops? Okay,
- 16:04Speaker 3: is too nice?
- 16:07Speaker 4: Absolutely listen, I know I'm just letting you take over
- 16:10Speaker 4: for now that I think you're referring to one Shannon
- 16:14Speaker 4: Ta dude, I mean, is that what it is? Because
- 16:16Speaker 4: he would bust my chops on a day he still
- 16:18Speaker 4: busts my two.
- 16:19Speaker 3: We just gotta, you know, we gotta gotta keep you
- 16:22Speaker 3: humble humility, all right, all right?
- 16:24Speaker 2: The other horse incredible. My absolute favorite sire besides gun
- 16:29Speaker 2: Runner is uh Bodro and that's incredible, trained by Riley Mott,
- 16:37Speaker 2: who I think is one. Between him and Will Walden
- 16:40Speaker 2: are probably two of the really up and coming trainers
- 16:43Speaker 2: right now. I'm big on both of them. Riley Mitt
- 16:46Speaker 2: I really like, yeah, yeah, not big on incredible.
- 16:49Speaker 3: No, I am, I am, It's it's And I mentioned
- 16:53Speaker 3: it previously. Having the experience at Churchill Downs was like
- 16:58Speaker 3: that that that jumps out a lot to me. And
- 17:00Speaker 3: I was telling Scoots too. I think a lot of
- 17:02Speaker 3: people are discounting that Virginia Derby just because it's the
- 17:05Speaker 3: Virginia Derby exactly. So yeah, give me, give me incredible
- 17:09Speaker 3: to playing underneath for uh yeah, yeah.
- 17:13Speaker 2: We gotta take a nick a Nick. We gotta take
- 17:15Speaker 2: a Nick Rouse right now. I break. If you want
- 17:18Speaker 2: to give us a tweet our text you can do
- 17:20Speaker 2: it five two four fifty on the Whiskey Thief text line,
- 17:23Speaker 2: or you can tweet me at just the Cat Radio.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Can't call in today, but I'm hoping Nickel state maybe
- 17:28Speaker 2: a little longer.
- 17:29Speaker 3: How much time you got a couple of minutes. I
- 17:31Speaker 3: just realized I forgot to write something that's okay.
- 17:35Speaker 2: You think anybody's even reading it, don't worry about it
- 17:38Speaker 2: lay that website.
- 17:40Speaker 3: I think it's dying. So anyway, like kind of like
- 17:42Speaker 3: the show. I'm just kidding.
- 17:45Speaker 2: That's only a joke, So stay right. There a lot
- 17:47Speaker 2: more to talk about.
- 17:48Speaker 3: This is just the.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Cats two four one four fourteen fifty. You want to
- 18:18Speaker 2: text in on the Whiskey Pee text line and uh,
- 18:21Speaker 2: we're still here on the backside of Churchill Downs and
- 18:24Speaker 2: joining us right now. One of my favorite people to
- 18:27Speaker 2: talk about are well, not talk about, but to talk
- 18:30Speaker 2: to Ned Toffee. How are you doing this morning?
- 18:33Speaker 3: Very good?
- 18:33Speaker 4: Thanks? Great, great to be here.
- 18:35Speaker 6: There's always a fun week up here on a Derby
- 18:38Speaker 6: week and getting out and seeing all the contenders and
- 18:41Speaker 6: maybe even doing a little shopping while we're at it.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you know I've said this before, and I say
- 18:47Speaker 2: this every time I see Ned Toffee. Anytime you go
- 18:49Speaker 2: to an auction, Nick Rouch and you see Ned Toffee
- 18:52Speaker 2: walk into the auction room, you need to buy a horse. Yeah,
- 18:55Speaker 2: you know you can't afford.
- 18:56Speaker 3: It, So.
- 18:59Speaker 6: I'm not sure that's a compliment. May make us the
- 19:02Speaker 6: least bright guys in the room.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Well, listen, I thought one of the funnest things that
- 19:08Speaker 2: happened because you know, you had the article that was
- 19:10Speaker 2: written about you, and of course the writer messed up
- 19:13Speaker 2: your name. Instead of them writing and saying they were
- 19:16Speaker 2: interviewing Ned Toppi, they said they were interviewing Ted Naffi
- 19:20Speaker 2: and then to turn around and have one of the
- 19:24Speaker 2: great horses that unfortunately had to be sent back to
- 19:27Speaker 2: the farm for a little bit. How is Ted Nafi
- 19:31Speaker 2: doing right now?
- 19:32Speaker 3: He's doing great.
- 19:32Speaker 6: We just got a really good report on him yesterday
- 19:35Speaker 6: as a matter of fact, and he's he's been doing
- 19:37Speaker 6: a little bit of light jogging and he gets on
- 19:39Speaker 6: an aqua sizer and gets turned out, and they say
- 19:43Speaker 6: he's a great minded horse. They say he stands in
- 19:45Speaker 6: his pattock and just watches all the horses train and
- 19:48Speaker 6: takes it all in. But he's a really good minded thing,
- 19:51Speaker 6: unlike his namesake, and that's I think one of the
- 19:54Speaker 6: things that serves him really well. So he's but he's
- 19:57Speaker 6: about a week or so away from starting to get
- 19:59Speaker 6: back to galloping, so you know, hopefully second half of
- 20:02Speaker 6: the year we can we can have some fun with him.
- 20:04Speaker 4: What's an aqua sizer.
- 20:06Speaker 6: So they have they have several different styles. This one's
- 20:10Speaker 6: actually a circular one, so you see horses that are
- 20:13Speaker 6: on the round walkers. This is exactly that, except submerged.
- 20:17Speaker 6: And then there's others that are more like an actual treadmill,
- 20:20Speaker 6: which is submerged.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Gotcha, okay, And didn't you have ones that just are
- 20:23Speaker 2: simply salt water. They walk in and walk right back.
- 20:26Speaker 2: That's and then also they have literal ponds. So we
- 20:32Speaker 2: had one go to a place in Okalla where it
- 20:36Speaker 2: was a philly to your ability, and she was literally
- 20:38Speaker 2: swimming around the pond to keep in shape. I mean,
- 20:43Speaker 2: the crazy part. Horses can swim amazing.
- 20:47Speaker 3: They swim. They swim very well. You never played Oregon Trail.
- 20:52Speaker 3: You gotta swim across the river.
- 20:55Speaker 6: And it's a great way to start a horse back
- 20:57Speaker 6: if you're trying to just kind of lighten the load
- 21:00Speaker 6: on on on joints that have been an issue. It's
- 21:05Speaker 6: a great way to ease a horseback into into exercise.
- 21:09Speaker 6: And and of course the guys Ian Brennan has him
- 21:12Speaker 6: uh down in o'call and he's he's so good, he's
- 21:14Speaker 6: done this so much and yeah, and so he's able
- 21:17Speaker 6: to strike the right balance of a little bit of
- 21:19Speaker 6: the aquadrade. Some turnout a little bit of light jogging,
- 21:22Speaker 6: so that I think the trick now will just be
- 21:23Speaker 6: to ease him very gradually back into training and hopefully,
- 21:28Speaker 6: you know, knock on wood, no more setbacks and and
- 21:30Speaker 6: we'll be rid of roll up, you know, late summer.
- 21:33Speaker 2: If you're just joining us ned Toffee uh from spin
- 21:36Speaker 2: Thrift Farm, your official title is what it's been thrifted uh.
- 21:42Speaker 6: If you ask people at spun they probably have a
- 21:44Speaker 6: lot of different names, but I'm a general manager and coo,
- 21:50Speaker 6: but I'm not Yeah.
- 21:52Speaker 2: In which you've had the unbelievable knowledge of picking horses
- 21:57Speaker 2: to come out there that have been unbelievably success because
- 22:00Speaker 2: I know you're responsible for bringing into mischief into Spinthrift Farm.
- 22:05Speaker 3: He's all right, yeah.
- 22:07Speaker 2: For a racehorse, he was how would you describe him
- 22:11Speaker 2: as a.
- 22:11Speaker 6: His performance, Well, you know he was a Grade one
- 22:14Speaker 6: winner at two and it's and he did. He was
- 22:17Speaker 6: not on the Derby trail because of a very minor issue, right,
- 22:21Speaker 6: I say minor in terms of severity, but it took
- 22:25Speaker 6: a while to heal back. So he was out most
- 22:29Speaker 6: of the summer of his three year old year. And
- 22:30Speaker 6: so that's why people weren't really very familiar with him,
- 22:34Speaker 6: but he was an extremely good two year old and
- 22:37Speaker 6: would have been on the Derby trail. So so you know,
- 22:41Speaker 6: I don't think we got to really see the best
- 22:43Speaker 6: of him, so sort of a sort of a you know,
- 22:48Speaker 6: an underrated racehorse definitely, because he didn't really get to
- 22:52Speaker 6: know you. But again, if you went a Grade one
- 22:53Speaker 6: or two puts you in pretty pretty select company, but
- 22:57Speaker 6: just just not the household name. But he's done well
- 22:59Speaker 6: at other job too. Yeah, he's been, he's been. He's
- 23:03Speaker 6: been very very good. And I have to say too,
- 23:07Speaker 6: you're very kind to credit me with that, but it's
- 23:09Speaker 6: very much a team. Seth Simpkin, who's the only employee
- 23:14Speaker 6: in the organization longer tenured than me, and he was,
- 23:17Speaker 6: he was there, and I think he and Richard Mandel
- 23:20Speaker 6: actually were at that sale and identified into Michief based
- 23:24Speaker 6: on how he breathed at a two year old training
- 23:26Speaker 6: sale in Okalla, and that was really what jumped out
- 23:29Speaker 6: at those guys. Yeah, and you know, we brought him
- 23:31Speaker 6: to stud and you know, we did everything we could
- 23:34Speaker 6: think of to get people to breed to him, and
- 23:37Speaker 6: they didn't really want to use him at first, and
- 23:40Speaker 6: which is sort of this game in a nutshell. So
- 23:42Speaker 6: he's gone from that to being now seven time leading,
- 23:47Speaker 6: seven consecutive years leading general Sire, which is remarkable in
- 23:53Speaker 6: that it hasn't been done since Bold Ruler in the
- 23:55Speaker 6: late sixties.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Wow.
- 23:56Speaker 4: And the only.
- 23:57Speaker 6: Other time that's been done is since after before Bold
- 24:01Speaker 6: Ruler was Lexington in the eighteen seventies. So it's it's
- 24:06Speaker 6: pretty significant historical context.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Yeah, exact because you started to talk about what you
- 24:12Speaker 2: started as far as what was the cost to have
- 24:16Speaker 2: your horse go meet into mischief?
- 24:17Speaker 3: Wasn't it twenty five thousand?
- 24:19Speaker 6: It was less than that his initial study he was
- 24:22Speaker 6: twelve thousand, five hundred, and we very quickly had to
- 24:26Speaker 6: discount off of that, and we actually even came up
- 24:28Speaker 6: with an incentive program to get to get breeders to
- 24:33Speaker 6: breed to him, and we offered a lifetime breeding right
- 24:35Speaker 6: program where if you bred to him two years in
- 24:38Speaker 6: a row for sixty five hundred dollars, so for a
- 24:41Speaker 6: total of investment of thirteen thirteen hundred or thirteen thousand
- 24:46Speaker 6: in stud fees, you could have earned the right to
- 24:49Speaker 6: breed into Mischief for the rest of his life for free.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Wow.
- 24:53Speaker 6: Got to be a deal and only fifteen people took
- 24:56Speaker 6: us up on it, and of those fifteen, only only
- 25:01Speaker 6: eight followed through and completed the deal to earn their
- 25:04Speaker 6: breeding right.
- 25:05Speaker 4: That's crazy.
- 25:05Speaker 6: So so you know, I always like to tell people
- 25:09Speaker 6: that story because it just shows you how tough this
- 25:11Speaker 6: game is and really even the best and the brightest,
- 25:16Speaker 6: you know, so many of the best people in the
- 25:18Speaker 6: business are located right in Lexington. They would have seen
- 25:21Speaker 6: this horse, they would have had the opportunity to earn
- 25:23Speaker 6: a breeding right for thirteen thousand dollars, and very few
- 25:28Speaker 6: people took us up on it, and it turned out
- 25:30Speaker 6: to be pretty fortunate, pretty fortunate for us because he's
- 25:34Speaker 6: now standing for two hundred and fifty thousand dollars and.
- 25:38Speaker 4: He's a pretty special.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Horse, a lot of money together.
- 25:41Speaker 2: There we go, making radio and breed.
- 25:44Speaker 3: There we go. Yeah, it'll only take a couple of years.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Then I got to ask you, because you've had plenty
- 25:50Speaker 3: of horses in the Kentucky Derby before, and now further
- 25:53Speaker 3: Ado is gearing up for the first Saturday they made.
- 25:56Speaker 3: What are just the emotions like I can't sleep and
- 25:59Speaker 3: I'm just ready to go watch the races. Yeah, I
- 26:01Speaker 3: can't imagine having a horse actually in it. So what's
- 26:03Speaker 3: it like? This build up and anticipation getting into the.
- 26:07Speaker 6: It's it's it's really exciting, and you know, we weren't
- 26:10Speaker 6: sure further ado of course one here as a two
- 26:13Speaker 6: year old with the Kentucky Jockey Club, came out of
- 26:17Speaker 6: that race with you know, kneading up just a brief break,
- 26:23Speaker 6: so we you know, the the the prep time was
- 26:27Speaker 6: was a shade abbreviated, so we knew going into Tampa
- 26:31Speaker 6: that was going to really be a prep race. He
- 26:33Speaker 6: probably wouldn't be at his best for that. He needed
- 26:37Speaker 6: that race to get forward off of it. We're a
- 26:42Speaker 6: stud farm and that's really as crazy as it sounds.
- 26:45Speaker 6: One of our biggest goals in this was to get
- 26:47Speaker 6: the Grade one in the Bluegrass because breeders want to
- 26:51Speaker 6: know that a horse has won at a Grade one level.
- 26:53Speaker 6: So we've gotten that box ticked now with the Bluegrass
- 26:57Speaker 6: and the Grade one and and hopefully he can just
- 27:00Speaker 6: carry that form on on into here.
- 27:03Speaker 3: Uh.
- 27:03Speaker 6: But it's it's obviously incredibly exciting.
- 27:06Speaker 3: It's got to be a little bit of anxiety inducing too,
- 27:09Speaker 3: because even though it is Derby week, I mean, he
- 27:12Speaker 3: might wake up Friday morning, and it's just it's it's
- 27:15Speaker 3: a no go.
- 27:15Speaker 6: There's there's anything that can happen, and we've had that
- 27:18Speaker 6: happen to us. We've had you know, Beholder was scratched
- 27:22Speaker 6: a breeders Cup week, Omaha, Beach. We had just got
- 27:25Speaker 6: the breeding interest in him for a fair amount of
- 27:29Speaker 6: money and he scratched. So yeah, and and and it's
- 27:35Speaker 6: worked out well. He's now become a very established, you know,
- 27:38Speaker 6: very good sire. So it all worked out in the end.
- 27:40Speaker 6: But yeah, certainly a lot of stress with is just
- 27:43Speaker 6: getting these guys into the starting gate. H is very
- 27:47Speaker 6: stressful for for so many reasons. And then you know,
- 27:52Speaker 6: we all, you know, do this for a living. Like
- 27:54Speaker 6: we like to think we know what we're doing and
- 27:56Speaker 6: what we're looking at and we're seeing, but at the
- 27:58Speaker 6: end of the day, you really you don't know how
- 28:00Speaker 6: they're going to show up on a given day for
- 28:02Speaker 6: a given race. And of course luck plays, yes, you know,
- 28:07Speaker 6: much larger part in the Derby than in any other race,
- 28:11Speaker 6: and so you know, there's so much sets out of
- 28:13Speaker 6: your control.
- 28:14Speaker 2: I don't think the casual fan knows. You know, first
- 28:17Speaker 2: of all, you buy the horse. Second of all, you
- 28:20Speaker 2: know that especially, and second of all, you hope it
- 28:24Speaker 2: gets to come and work out. You hope it gets
- 28:28Speaker 2: to the race. There's so many steps before you get
- 28:31Speaker 2: to the winner circle, and there are so many out
- 28:33Speaker 2: there horses wise that don't even make it.
- 28:36Speaker 6: Yeah, no, it's it's it's it's a tough game with
- 28:39Speaker 6: it really with a high rate of failure. And if
- 28:41Speaker 6: you look at you know, the very best stallions in
- 28:43Speaker 6: the world sire ten to eleven percent stakes winners. Yeah,
- 28:48Speaker 6: last time I checked them. Not a math major, but
- 28:50Speaker 6: that means that there's about there's about ninety percent that
- 28:53Speaker 6: don't and and so there's a very high rate of failure.
- 28:57Speaker 6: I've always thought that's why baseball players train for pretty
- 29:00Speaker 6: well to to be in horse owners, because they sort
- 29:03Speaker 6: of the same thing with a batting average, except this
- 29:05Speaker 6: game is even tougher than that.
- 29:07Speaker 2: If you're just joining us, as Ned Toffee is with
- 29:09Speaker 2: us right now as well as Nick.
- 29:11Speaker 3: Rouse, there we go. Yeah, yeah, but what you're on
- 29:18Speaker 3: every day, don't worry about it.
- 29:19Speaker 2: But one of the things you were you were bragging
- 29:22Speaker 2: about when we were on break well, don't laugh, I
- 29:25Speaker 2: mean it is something you should brag about. And of
- 29:28Speaker 2: course you're a CEO of Spinthrift Farm, you should tout
- 29:31Speaker 2: the job that not just you, but your entire team.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Dumb is the fact that there are seven horses in
- 29:38Speaker 2: the derby you were telling me from Syrus from Spinthrift.
- 29:41Speaker 6: Yes, actually six and if well and seven seven if
- 29:45Speaker 6: you count further, Ado is knock on Wood hopefully a
- 29:48Speaker 6: future Spendthrifts are. But we've got yees seven seven total
- 29:51Speaker 6: spots into Mischief uh no Surprises has got three three
- 29:56Speaker 6: colts in here, and then we've got a Boltdoorrosk a
- 30:00Speaker 6: cult name incredible, incredible, incredible. Yeah, Uh Yaupon has a
- 30:05Speaker 6: cult name, uh albis uh and then uh Maximus Mischief
- 30:11Speaker 6: had intrepido uh draw in. So we've got we've got
- 30:16Speaker 6: uh pretty well represented. And you know, really excited about that.
- 30:20Speaker 6: And as you said, that is very much a credit
- 30:23Speaker 6: to our team, and you know, starts with ownership. But
- 30:26Speaker 6: we've been very fortunate. We've we've been there for about
- 30:29Speaker 6: twenty two years now, and over that time we've been
- 30:31Speaker 6: able to put together just a great team of people
- 30:34Speaker 6: and and and it's it's an honor for me to
- 30:36Speaker 6: be here and represent them. But it's very very much
- 30:39Speaker 6: a product of ownership and and the team.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Yeah, well, and congratulations to you.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Anytime I get to see you and talk to you
- 30:47Speaker 2: for a figure, I got to pinch myself. I know
- 30:49Speaker 2: you think this is nuts, you think it's nuts, but
- 30:52Speaker 2: to be able to sit here and talk to you,
- 30:53Speaker 2: it's a it's a real honor, and I appreciate you
- 30:55Speaker 2: taking the time for a few minutes. Good luck to
- 30:57Speaker 2: Derby and hopefully you get a win.
- 31:00Speaker 6: Well, thank you. We're hoping so too, but thank you
- 31:03Speaker 6: very much. And it's yeah, very much an honor to
- 31:05Speaker 6: be here, and and thank you for having me.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Absolutely, that's ned toffee everybody from spending through a farm.
- 31:10Speaker 2: I appreciate his time this morning. But we'll be right back.
- 31:13Speaker 2: We're to take a break. We got the owners of
- 31:14Speaker 2: so Happy Hans and I'm American to join us, and
- 31:17Speaker 2: then Dale Roman and his significant other can we say
- 31:23Speaker 2: wife Tammy Fox?
- 31:24Speaker 3: All right? Good, We'll take a break. This is just a.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Cat nature.
- 32:03Speaker 2: A fab two fifty. You want to text in, we'll
- 32:12Speaker 2: get to your text in just a minute on the
- 32:13Speaker 2: Whiskey Thief text line. But joining us now are some
- 32:18Speaker 2: really you can't hear me.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Okay, she can't hear me.
- 32:22Speaker 2: So are Hans and Anna Maren and uh so these
- 32:26Speaker 2: are some good friends of mine that I've gotten to know.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Are you good now?
- 32:30Speaker 3: Okay?
- 32:31Speaker 2: Yeah, we want to make sure An is the one
- 32:33Speaker 2: in control. Okay, I just want you to know, Hans,
- 32:36Speaker 2: we don't need to worry about. But both of these
- 32:38Speaker 2: people have become dear friends of mine as they own
- 32:41Speaker 2: a barn called Saints, a racing stable called Saints or Sinners,
- 32:45Speaker 2: and uh they also own a particular horse name so
- 32:48Speaker 2: Happy that I'm going to tell you right now has
- 32:52Speaker 2: absolutely become the favorite by everybody's hearts throughout the country.
- 32:56Speaker 2: And you know, do you realize I told you I
- 32:58Speaker 2: texted you' all the other day that I put a
- 33:02Speaker 2: post on TikTok And do you know that over seventy
- 33:06Speaker 2: thousand people have responded to this, all of them just
- 33:10Speaker 2: love your horse. What is the first thing you think of?
- 33:13Speaker 2: And I'll start with you, because ladies, first, Anna, don't
- 33:16Speaker 2: be You're never shy, don't be this way?
- 33:19Speaker 3: What is it?
- 33:20Speaker 2: How does it make you feel knowing a horse that
- 33:22Speaker 2: y'all own, that has becoming the so near and dear
- 33:26Speaker 2: to so many people throughout the country.
- 33:28Speaker 7: I think it has so much to do with the
- 33:31Speaker 7: entire story of just the horse itself, also the passing
- 33:36Speaker 7: of Dina Mike Smith trying to break a record. Why
- 33:42Speaker 7: the horse was named so Happy, There's so much in
- 33:44Speaker 7: that story that I think it's brought so many people
- 33:49Speaker 7: to really pay attention to the horse. Yes, besides the story,
- 33:52Speaker 7: then they start realizing it can run, it can run
- 33:56Speaker 7: a long distance, so that I think the whole thing
- 34:00Speaker 7: combined has made people really cheer for him.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Well, Hans, who came up with the name? Is this
- 34:06Speaker 2: something you came up with? Because I know it's kind
- 34:08Speaker 2: of a you're making fun of Mark Glatt, who I've
- 34:11Speaker 2: talked about him this week. You know, how can you
- 34:13Speaker 2: not love Mark Glatt? But you don't know if Mark
- 34:16Speaker 2: Glatt loves you because his personality is nonexistent. I mean,
- 34:20Speaker 2: you know, I'm carrying on with y'all the other day
- 34:22Speaker 2: and he's just staring at me. You're laughing, He's just
- 34:26Speaker 2: starting and I'm like, Okay, what does Mark really think
- 34:28Speaker 2: of me? And I don't know? So who came up
- 34:30Speaker 2: with the name?
- 34:31Speaker 4: Anna?
- 34:31Speaker 3: Did you? Did? I? Did? She?
- 34:35Speaker 7: But yeah, go ahead, Well every time we go to
- 34:38Speaker 7: the calls sales the obs Mark and we buy the horses.
- 34:43Speaker 7: Mark gives me the assignment to kind of get me
- 34:45Speaker 7: in the game. Anna, you're in charge of the names.
- 34:49Speaker 7: And so I was delayed a few weeks months and
- 34:54Speaker 7: he goes, Anna, you owe me names. So I start
- 34:55Speaker 7: going okay, okay, Mark. So I start going through so
- 34:59Speaker 7: happy mother and father, and I go got it, got it.
- 35:04Speaker 7: So I went up to Mark and I said, Mark,
- 35:06Speaker 7: I found the perfect name for this horse. He goes yeah,
- 35:09Speaker 7: and I said yes, and I'm naming it after you
- 35:11Speaker 7: because you're just so happy all the time. And that's
- 35:15Speaker 7: exactly what he did. He yes, It brings a big
- 35:19Speaker 7: smile to his face because you know, I always tease
- 35:22Speaker 7: him that he's so stoic, and I go, if people
- 35:25Speaker 7: only saw the other side of you, He said, so
- 35:27Speaker 7: when you interview on television, can you just walk away
- 35:30Speaker 7: with like say thank you and smile?
- 35:32Speaker 3: And I'm always giving him pointers. I told him I
- 35:35Speaker 3: was going to be his pr person.
- 35:36Speaker 7: So he and I have a really really fun relationship
- 35:39Speaker 7: that most people don't see because he does appear that
- 35:42Speaker 7: way exactly.
- 35:44Speaker 2: And he didn't know how to take me, you know,
- 35:45Speaker 2: what some days I don't know how to take me either,
- 35:47Speaker 2: So I get it. You know, well you know my wife,
- 35:49Speaker 2: so she didn't know how to take me.
- 35:51Speaker 7: Well, look at me. I'm complete opposite from him. I
- 35:53Speaker 7: don't even I think when he first met me he
- 35:55Speaker 7: didn't know what.
- 35:56Speaker 3: To do with me exactly.
- 35:58Speaker 2: This is where you and I are liking. Patricia and
- 36:00Speaker 2: Hans are very much along. Is that fair to say?
- 36:02Speaker 3: Hans?
- 36:02Speaker 2: You know this, This is something where you and I
- 36:04Speaker 2: are very much alike. We have a love for this
- 36:08Speaker 2: sport and you know you've loved it as long as
- 36:11Speaker 2: I have. Living out your dream like this owning a horse.
- 36:17Speaker 2: I know it's a dumb question, but I want to
- 36:19Speaker 2: hear it out of your mouth. What does it finally
- 36:22Speaker 2: feel like that you're overlooking the twins spars right there?
- 36:26Speaker 2: You got a horse running around here that's going to
- 36:28Speaker 2: be in the gate and has a chance to win
- 36:29Speaker 2: the Kentucky Derby.
- 36:30Speaker 4: Yeah pretty crazy?
- 36:31Speaker 8: Yeah? Uh no, we we just you know, we work
- 36:34Speaker 8: hard at this. We we you know, go to the
- 36:37Speaker 8: sales with Mark and you talk about Mark, not you know,
- 36:40Speaker 8: saying anything friendly. You got to see him when he's
- 36:43Speaker 8: looking at a horse and he doesn't like it.
- 36:45Speaker 4: He just walks away. He doesn't even say thank you.
- 36:47Speaker 4: It's kind of funny.
- 36:49Speaker 8: At the first time we were there with him, we're like, oh,
- 36:52Speaker 8: thank you, thank you, and and he's gone, he's already
- 36:55Speaker 8: at the dex horse and uh, it's just a process.
- 36:58Speaker 8: But we've been we've been raced it, We've you know,
- 37:01Speaker 8: I've I've studied for a long long time this game.
- 37:04Speaker 4: But at the same time, listening to Ted.
- 37:09Speaker 8: Right, yeah, yeah, listen, Yeah, that's why I see that
- 37:15Speaker 8: I got it.
- 37:15Speaker 4: I know it was just called Ted exactly, might as
- 37:18Speaker 4: well talk Ted.
- 37:20Speaker 8: But but listening to you know how even like into mischief,
- 37:25Speaker 8: you know physically you look at him, how good he was. Uh,
- 37:28Speaker 8: it's still take you know, they still got to get
- 37:30Speaker 8: traction with the brood mares, and they come in all
- 37:35Speaker 8: different shapes and sizes. You don't exactly know. So we
- 37:38Speaker 8: go to the sales and look for athletes. And I
- 37:42Speaker 8: know the.
- 37:42Speaker 4: Question was how do I feel about this?
- 37:44Speaker 8: But it's the journey that takes you there, and and
- 37:47Speaker 8: this happened to be this horse that took us there.
- 37:50Speaker 8: And to be honest, it was probably the last horse
- 37:52Speaker 8: that we had bought that we felt like we were
- 37:55Speaker 8: going to have a Derby horse. I mean, I thought
- 37:58Speaker 8: very highly of some of the other and obviously so
- 38:02Speaker 8: happy he's you know, you know, brought us, brought us here.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Yeah, which is crazy.
- 38:07Speaker 2: And for the people that don't know Hans and on
- 38:09Speaker 2: the Marin are with me right now that owners of
- 38:12Speaker 2: so happy that's in the Kentucky Derby this year. The
- 38:15Speaker 2: heartbreaking story is that Mark Glatt's wife passed away recently,
- 38:19Speaker 2: and it's been so nice to see how it's brought
- 38:22Speaker 2: y'all even closer together, not only with Mark but his
- 38:26Speaker 2: entire family. I mean, are you still thankful you're here
- 38:31Speaker 2: and and the family is I assume the whole Mark's
- 38:34Speaker 2: entire family is going to be here too for the race.
- 38:36Speaker 2: And I know it's difficult somewhat to them, uh and
- 38:40Speaker 2: uh and to y'all as well, but you still have
- 38:44Speaker 2: to feel like she's watching over and going to help
- 38:46Speaker 2: y'all hopefully bring home a win this weekend.
- 38:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:48Speaker 8: I mean, you got to feel like like something's dragging
- 38:52Speaker 8: us along here, and something higher power than we are,
- 38:56Speaker 8: and we've just been I mean that this story is
- 39:00Speaker 8: so you know, tough in so many ways. Yeah, but
- 39:04Speaker 8: hopefully there'll be a blessing at the end. Well, you
- 39:06Speaker 8: knew it.
- 39:07Speaker 2: You told me the other day. You said you had
- 39:09Speaker 2: the confidence going into the Santa Anita Derby. What made
- 39:13Speaker 2: you look at this horse and say he's going to win?
- 39:16Speaker 8: So, you know, we if you kind of look at
- 39:20Speaker 8: his progression, you know, he won at six and a
- 39:23Speaker 8: half his first time out at del Mar in a
- 39:26Speaker 8: full field, a couple of bafforts in there as well,
- 39:29Speaker 8: and just.
- 39:29Speaker 4: The way he did it.
- 39:31Speaker 8: He always is, you know, drawing off at the finish line,
- 39:36Speaker 8: so it's not like he was ever backing up. Same
- 39:39Speaker 8: thing happened in the San Vicente, smaller field there was
- 39:42Speaker 8: only five horses, but he sat off the pace four
- 39:44Speaker 8: or five lengths off, and actually the third place finisher
- 39:48Speaker 8: kind of drew off mid stretch and we came and
- 39:51Speaker 8: got him, and then Bafford's but Tane kind of came
- 39:54Speaker 8: after us. But just the way he holds them sway
- 39:57Speaker 8: just tells you he's just doing enough. He never really
- 40:01Speaker 8: overextends himself. He's a really smart horse. And then we
- 40:04Speaker 8: got to this a Felipe, which was everybody was waiting
- 40:06Speaker 8: for the failure of Runhappy, going a route a ground
- 40:10Speaker 8: and in this case it wasn't an epic failure, but
- 40:14Speaker 8: we were disappointed. He had some little training hiccups going
- 40:19Speaker 8: into it. He had been off for sixty days basically,
- 40:23Speaker 8: and we missed a couple of weeks of real good
- 40:25Speaker 8: training time. And there wasn't anything physically, it was just
- 40:30Speaker 8: we took the blinkers off him in a workout and
- 40:34Speaker 8: he got lost and we got we got scared. Mike
- 40:37Speaker 8: got scared, thought something was wrong with him, and then
- 40:39Speaker 8: you know, we did all the diagnostics and he was perfect.
- 40:43Speaker 4: So then we got back.
- 40:43Speaker 8: Training and you know, we were trying to play a
- 40:46Speaker 8: little bit of catchup getting him ready to go a
- 40:48Speaker 8: route A ground and in that race, you know, and
- 40:51Speaker 8: we probably put a little bit more speed into him
- 40:53Speaker 8: in those workouts. He stumbled at the start. He just
- 40:56Speaker 8: kind of stuttered and head went down and Mike picked
- 40:59Speaker 8: up his you know, picked up the ring and he
- 41:01Speaker 8: took it. And so then we ended up chasing Brandt
- 41:04Speaker 8: the whole race, and we got tired.
- 41:07Speaker 4: I mean, he really did.
- 41:08Speaker 8: So we get beat a couple of lengths and then
- 41:11Speaker 8: we go back. You know, now we're only thirty days
- 41:14Speaker 8: away from the sand a Nita Derby, and you know,
- 41:16Speaker 8: Mark would go, hey, you know, we could go a
- 41:18Speaker 8: lot of places and run. We don't need to, you know,
- 41:21Speaker 8: do it? And I'm like, are you crazy?
- 41:23Speaker 3: You know?
- 41:23Speaker 8: And after I watched the race, I knew the distance
- 41:27Speaker 8: wasn't the problem, right, it was just a setup. His
- 41:30Speaker 8: style got ruined that day because of when he stumbled.
- 41:35Speaker 8: It forced him to chase and he likes to just
- 41:39Speaker 8: sit and run and once he gets in that rhythm,
- 41:42Speaker 8: r He's just easy and so the distance will never matter.
- 41:46Speaker 8: It's just getting into getting to the spot and the rhythm.
- 41:50Speaker 8: You know, whether it was a mile and a half,
- 41:51Speaker 8: I really wouldn't you know. Mark tells me all the
- 41:53Speaker 8: time he can't get a mile and a half. Well,
- 41:57Speaker 8: you only run six furlongs instead of the extra quarter.
- 42:00Speaker 4: Uh huh, You'll get.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Him mile of that.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Well, because there's so many fun stories along with this,
- 42:04Speaker 2: I mean, you got Mike Smith would be the oldest
- 42:07Speaker 2: jockey to ever win. I mean, that's another exciting part
- 42:10Speaker 2: on it, isn't it? Yes, it is love Mike Smith.
- 42:12Speaker 4: Do you love Mike Smith?
- 42:14Speaker 7: And he's always so grateful that we have not given
- 42:17Speaker 7: up on him. I think some people may have bumped
- 42:21Speaker 7: him out already and said let's get somebody else. And
- 42:24Speaker 7: that's just not at all ever came to our you know,
- 42:30Speaker 7: we never ever thought of just replacing him with anybody else.
- 42:35Speaker 8: Why would you replace the Hall of Famer the jockey.
- 42:42Speaker 7: Well, and that's that's exactly because so many people keep saying, oh,
- 42:45Speaker 7: he can't, he can't race. You know, he's sixty, and
- 42:49Speaker 7: but like Mark has said over and over, and then
- 42:51Speaker 7: I see him when even I hug him, and so
- 42:54Speaker 7: he's as solid physically as.
- 42:58Speaker 3: A young one.
- 42:59Speaker 7: And so there was I mean, he is fit, he
- 43:02Speaker 7: has the experience. We are so excited for Mike to
- 43:06Speaker 7: to break that record too. Like I said, there's there's
- 43:09Speaker 7: so many little stories within, so happy that I think
- 43:12Speaker 7: it just makes it a movie.
- 43:15Speaker 3: A movie.
- 43:17Speaker 7: So I heard that if we win, there will be
- 43:20Speaker 7: a movie.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Really, yes, so Justin and I get, can I play
- 43:26Speaker 2: the part of Mike Smith?
- 43:30Speaker 4: I think? But nothing?
- 43:34Speaker 7: Yeah, So there is there's that excitement too that you know,
- 43:38Speaker 7: he could be breaking the record and being the oldest
- 43:42Speaker 7: Kentucky derby Jackie Winner.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Well, you know, I was at a function yesterday, a
- 43:46Speaker 2: luncheon where they had Riley Mott and uh, Chad Brown,
- 43:51Speaker 2: Uh there speaking?
- 43:53Speaker 3: Or Brad Cox. I'm sorry Brad Cox.
- 43:55Speaker 2: And somebody asked the question, is Mike smith to ow
- 44:01Speaker 2: to be a jockey? Your answer would be Hans.
- 44:03Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 44:04Speaker 8: He takes all the young bucks to the gym, to
- 44:08Speaker 8: the gym every day.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Does he really kicks her butts? Yeah?
- 44:10Speaker 3: Really?
- 44:11Speaker 8: He drags him into the into the weight room with him.
- 44:14Speaker 8: He's he's tough, he's rock solid.
- 44:16Speaker 4: This may be a dumb question, but do they have
- 44:18Speaker 4: like a workout facility here? No, anywhere they have to
- 44:22Speaker 4: take up properly? Yeah? Yeah, yeah.
- 44:23Speaker 8: And he takes all the new jockeys. That's the first
- 44:26Speaker 8: thing he tells him. Yea, if you want to stay
- 44:27Speaker 8: in this game for a long time, yeah, you're gonna.
- 44:30Speaker 4: Have to put the work in.
- 44:31Speaker 2: The part I love about Mike Smithy always has a
- 44:33Speaker 2: smile on his face. And that's the part I love,
- 44:35Speaker 2: just like y'all have had nothing, but I this is
- 44:39Speaker 2: the funny part. Hans calls me Sunday night and uh,
- 44:43Speaker 2: I said hello, He goes, are you happy?
- 44:45Speaker 3: That's all he said. It's like I'm so happy? I mean,
- 44:47Speaker 3: how could you be? Listen?
- 44:49Speaker 2: I want to let y'all go because I know you're
- 44:51Speaker 2: getting ready to have a a Philly that's getting ready
- 44:54Speaker 2: to work out and not work out, but train this morning.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Who's gonna be in a race on Friday?
- 44:58Speaker 4: Is that we'll give her a plug? Sisty redhead.
- 45:01Speaker 3: There you go.
- 45:01Speaker 2: I like that isty red head. So yeah, she'll be
- 45:04Speaker 2: coming out here in a couple of minutes. So I
- 45:05Speaker 2: want to let y'all go, But I want you to
- 45:07Speaker 2: know how much I've loved getting to know Yell. Yeah,
- 45:10Speaker 2: I'm praying that you you both have a great day.
- 45:13Speaker 3: I mean, I love this story.
- 45:15Speaker 4: We'll still be your friend.
- 45:19Speaker 3: I doubt it, but I think Hanna will. I don't
- 45:21Speaker 3: know if Hans will.
- 45:22Speaker 2: But thank you'all so much taking time.
- 45:24Speaker 3: It's always so much fun.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Yeah all right, yeah, we get a hug right here
- 45:29Speaker 2: on Uh so all right, are we early right now?
- 45:32Speaker 2: I gotta let them go because they got the horse
- 45:33Speaker 2: coming up?
- 45:34Speaker 3: But how much time?
- 45:34Speaker 2: We got a couple of minutes. Sorry, I'll see y'all later. Yeah, yeah,
- 45:39Speaker 2: oh I'll be able to cover it. I got this
- 45:40Speaker 2: guy right here behind me that'll cover it. But anyway,
- 45:43Speaker 2: all right, we'll see y'all. You know, I got to
- 45:46Speaker 2: remind myself. I'm still on the radio here. I'm saying
- 45:47Speaker 2: goodbye to them, but sorry about that. But I mean, yeah,
- 45:52Speaker 2: come on in, Dale Romans is coming in for a
- 45:56Speaker 2: couple of minutes, and then if you can stay a
- 45:58Speaker 2: little longer, I would love it. So we got to
- 46:00Speaker 2: take a hard break in just a second. But you know,
- 46:03Speaker 2: you look at the rain right out here, Dale Romans,
- 46:06Speaker 2: and it's got to be hard. What two days before
- 46:10Speaker 2: these big grade run races you've been in these? Is
- 46:13Speaker 2: it hard to get these horses out here training in
- 46:16Speaker 2: something like this.
- 46:17Speaker 9: Or they're going to train anyway. They're like mailman, rain snowshine.
- 46:20Speaker 9: But the good thing is that if if the rain
- 46:24Speaker 9: pulls out and we get a drive run into it,
- 46:26Speaker 9: this is the best thing could happen.
- 46:28Speaker 3: To the racetrack. Really.
- 46:29Speaker 9: Yeah, moisture is important and the moisture content would be
- 46:32Speaker 9: perfect by Saturday.
- 46:33Speaker 3: Well if it pulls out. And to your point, Dale,
- 46:36Speaker 3: the horses training, I believe on Sunday that track was
- 46:39Speaker 3: so fast and Trepido worked at four furlongs I think
- 46:43Speaker 3: forty five seconds.
- 46:44Speaker 9: Yeah, it's been too it's been running fast. But I
- 46:47Speaker 9: think it's the safest track we've had in a long time.
- 46:49Speaker 9: Churchill did a major, hundreds of thousands of dollars project
- 46:53Speaker 9: nobody knows about. Yeah, for the first time that I
- 46:56Speaker 9: know of. And I've been here. I'm fifty nine. I've
- 46:58Speaker 9: been here fifty nine years. All the cushion off the racetrack,
- 47:01Speaker 9: all the sand, and they got down to the firm pad,
- 47:05Speaker 9: the base we call it, and and found a couple
- 47:07Speaker 9: of little spots that were soft and weak. They fixed them.
- 47:10Speaker 9: They took they took all imagine taking a miles.
- 47:13Speaker 3: Worth of dirt.
- 47:14Speaker 9: They took it up into the chute and remixed it
- 47:16Speaker 9: and reformed it so it was all even with the
- 47:18Speaker 9: same loom and the same amount of use, the same dirt,
- 47:22Speaker 9: used the same dirt, really, and shifted it all again
- 47:25Speaker 9: to make sure there was nothing then that the horse
- 47:27Speaker 9: could step.
- 47:28Speaker 2: On, and laid it all back down. That's a massive project, exactly.
- 47:32Speaker 2: I watched them do it. So we got to take
- 47:33Speaker 2: a break right now. If you'll stay right there, I
- 47:35Speaker 2: would appreciate it. We're gonna have a few more minutes
- 47:37Speaker 2: with Dale Romans. Nick Rouse is gonna hangle with us
- 47:39Speaker 2: a little longer as well five O two four one
- 47:42Speaker 2: fourteen fifty. We'll get your texts as well. In the
- 47:44Speaker 2: Whiskey Thief text text line stay right there, one more
- 47:47Speaker 2: hour just the Cats on this Wednesday, Randy da at
- 47:50Speaker 2: the backside of Churchill.
- 47:57Speaker 3: Just get welcome to us the Cats with Michael.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Bennett Babbo two four one four fourteen fifty on the
- 48:06Speaker 2: Whiskey t text line if you want to text in
- 48:08Speaker 2: and Nick Rous is coming back on along with Justin. Now,
- 48:11Speaker 2: y'all interrupt and talking as much as you want. Don't
- 48:14Speaker 2: make me feel like I have to be the only
- 48:15Speaker 2: one talking. So I'm in. I'm in royalty here as
- 48:19Speaker 2: Tammy Fox joins us, she won't come on the radio
- 48:22Speaker 2: with me, but she'll stand here and stare at me
- 48:24Speaker 2: like I'm some sort of evil person.
- 48:26Speaker 4: So but Dale for the last two days.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Well she's a good judge of character. See how Dale
- 48:35Speaker 3: this is.
- 48:35Speaker 2: I write checks to him and this is how he
- 48:38Speaker 2: treats me. So but Dale Romans is joining us right now.
- 48:41Speaker 2: We're gonna break the rules. You know, I have one
- 48:43Speaker 2: rule on this show. We don't talk politics. We'll talk
- 48:46Speaker 2: politics for a little bit because I know you that's
- 48:49Speaker 2: you know, we won't.
- 48:50Speaker 9: We won't, we won't, we won't talk controversial politics. Thank
- 48:54Speaker 9: you voting voting for Dale Romes for the United States
- 48:56Speaker 9: and Kentucky's not controversial. A week from Tuesday, that's three
- 49:02Speaker 9: weeks from yesterday on May nineteenth. And yeah, it's something
- 49:06Speaker 9: I've always wanted to do. Dabbled in politics on the
- 49:08Speaker 9: friends of my whole life. And I'm just sick of Washington,
- 49:11Speaker 9: d C. And I go up there for the HVPA,
- 49:13Speaker 9: for the horsemen's groups and try to work with them,
- 49:15Speaker 9: and they see that nothing gets done. All they do
- 49:18Speaker 9: is fight about who's going to get credit. I don't
- 49:20Speaker 9: care about any of that. Listen, you know, if I
- 49:21Speaker 9: can work with everybody back there on the backside on
- 49:23Speaker 9: a daily basis, I stand next to my competitors every day,
- 49:26Speaker 9: watching our horses train together, and we're still good friends,
- 49:28Speaker 9: and we still competed against each other in afternoon. I
- 49:30Speaker 9: can work with Republicans, I can work with Democrats, I
- 49:32Speaker 9: can work with anybody.
- 49:34Speaker 3: I don't want to fight anymore up there. I want
- 49:35Speaker 3: to go up there and fix some things.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's what most people are sick and
- 49:39Speaker 2: tired of. It's just like that's so divisive when you
- 49:41Speaker 2: bring up politics in the first place, that nobody and
- 49:44Speaker 2: that's why I don't talk about it. No, it's just
- 49:46Speaker 2: there's nothing good that comes out of it.
- 49:48Speaker 3: It was a really a shame.
- 49:49Speaker 9: And what does make there is just entertainment value is yes,
- 49:52Speaker 9: it's not real news. Yeah, and that's silly too, but yeah,
- 49:56Speaker 9: I just want to go for a term or two
- 49:57Speaker 9: try to make a difference in the state.
- 49:59Speaker 3: Can tell you.
- 49:59Speaker 9: It's also kind of an experiment to see if a
- 50:01Speaker 9: politician can come out and answer questions when you're asked
- 50:04Speaker 9: and talk about issues without political rhetoric and talk about
- 50:07Speaker 9: all the political lines that my advisors keep telling me
- 50:10Speaker 9: to say and do.
- 50:11Speaker 3: This is popular. I don't give it. Damn, you're not
- 50:12Speaker 3: running for office. I am.
- 50:13Speaker 9: They're gonna hear my view of points and how I
- 50:15Speaker 9: feel about things because I think I'm Kentucky and I
- 50:18Speaker 9: think I understand what the people Kentucky thinking and need.
- 50:21Speaker 2: How can you not let answer right there? I mean,
- 50:24Speaker 2: that's why I'm a fan. He's not a fan of me,
- 50:26Speaker 2: but I'm a fan of you.
- 50:28Speaker 3: Long as you're text clear, I'm a big fan. That's
- 50:31Speaker 3: the only reason he's speaking to me, so it might
- 50:33Speaker 3: be the only reason I'm on radio with.
- 50:37Speaker 2: But talk us through right now, because you've been through
- 50:40Speaker 2: this whole ritual of having a horse in the biggest
- 50:43Speaker 2: races in the world. What is a trainer going through
- 50:46Speaker 2: right now? Just a few days before the Kentucky Derby.
- 50:50Speaker 9: You're pulled every direction. It doesn't even matter if you're
- 50:52Speaker 9: a long shot. But if you have a horse who's
- 50:53Speaker 9: got a live chance and you're just pulled every direction,
- 50:56Speaker 9: everybody's wanting to talk to you, and you've got to
- 50:58Speaker 9: worry about your horse, but you also have to worry
- 51:00Speaker 9: about your entire stable and your business that you're running.
- 51:02Speaker 9: And it is a hectic, non stop week from the
- 51:05Speaker 9: time you wake up at five thirty in the morning
- 51:07Speaker 9: five o'clock with every time you get up to you
- 51:09Speaker 9: go to bed at night, someone's won a piece of you. Now,
- 51:11Speaker 9: on the flip side of that, I've run third.
- 51:14Speaker 3: I've never won a derby.
- 51:15Speaker 9: I thought I was gonna win with shackle for that
- 51:16Speaker 9: took the lead at day post. No one feels like
- 51:19Speaker 9: to think you're going to win the derby. But let
- 51:23Speaker 9: me say that, when they hit the wire, if you
- 51:25Speaker 9: aren't the one to one you can.
- 51:26Speaker 3: It's the loneliest feeling in the world.
- 51:28Speaker 9: And you're walking back with your horse and nobody gives
- 51:30Speaker 9: a damn what you about the last two weeks when
- 51:33Speaker 9: they all wanted to talk to you, they're running to
- 51:35Speaker 9: one person, one group. And that's the greatness of the
- 51:37Speaker 9: Kentucky Derby.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Yeah, but you also though the walk.
- 51:41Speaker 9: Over, the walk over amazing, especially being from Louis I
- 51:44Speaker 9: think it's even more rich, and especially my barn four
- 51:48Speaker 9: as you know, it's way down the road there, and
- 51:49Speaker 9: I remember the first derby. It's one of the most
- 51:51Speaker 9: special times in racing for me is walking just from
- 51:54Speaker 9: up the path the road through the barn area with
- 51:56Speaker 9: all the guys I grew up with and getting into
- 51:58Speaker 9: my first Kentucky Derby and they're all cheering us on
- 52:00Speaker 9: as we walk on, and then to walk over around
- 52:04Speaker 9: the corner and everybody yelling down to me, either somebody
- 52:06Speaker 9: I went to high school with, or neighbors and yelling
- 52:10Speaker 9: down go get them, showing much say can do Butler
- 52:12Speaker 9: of high school. And it's a it's a surreal experience.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Well, and that's the fun part for me because you know,
- 52:20Speaker 2: growing up in Louisville, being around horses all my life,
- 52:23Speaker 2: but not on this side of the horse industry. You know,
- 52:27Speaker 2: I've always been just like I was telling with Ned Toffee,
- 52:30Speaker 2: it's always been so cool to get to know him.
- 52:33Speaker 2: It's the coolest thing because you've been one of my
- 52:35Speaker 2: heroes in horse racing and to now get to know
- 52:38Speaker 2: you and have you know my name, and you get
- 52:40Speaker 2: to see a different side of both of y' all
- 52:42Speaker 2: that you're not you got such a gigantic ego that
- 52:46Speaker 2: you're not approachable.
- 52:47Speaker 3: Everybody loves Dale Romans. Thank you for that.
- 52:49Speaker 9: But let me tell you some about horse racing and
- 52:52Speaker 9: little what's different than anyplace else in the world. Frank Jones,
- 52:55Speaker 9: he was telling me all the time. And he told
- 52:56Speaker 9: Bill Carstangian when he took over CEO, he said, your
- 52:58Speaker 9: biggest problem is everyone in the city. A little wall
- 53:01Speaker 9: was a piece of Churchill Downs and everywhere you go,
- 53:03Speaker 9: people love this racetrack and we're so proud of it,
- 53:06Speaker 9: and this is our week to showcase it. And people
- 53:09Speaker 9: on horse racing are approachable. That's what's different than the
- 53:12Speaker 9: NBA or NFL or makes League Baseball, right, you know,
- 53:16Speaker 9: this is an interactive sport and without the fans betting,
- 53:19Speaker 9: and we don't have any horse racing. And so we
- 53:22Speaker 9: walked through the crowds. You're not going to see Lebron
- 53:25Speaker 9: James walking through the crowd Staples Center.
- 53:27Speaker 3: But we just walked through the crowds.
- 53:29Speaker 9: People come up and talk and we're all in it together,
- 53:31Speaker 9: and we all stand under the TV scream at it
- 53:33Speaker 9: like we're crazy and complain about our ride we got after.
- 53:36Speaker 3: Well, well that makes me ask you dial because I
- 53:39Speaker 3: am among the many who knows that the CDI overwards,
- 53:43Speaker 3: they they aren't necessarily fans of the average Joe fan
- 53:46Speaker 3: who wants to come out here during Derby Week. They'll
- 53:49Speaker 3: give us Tuesday, maybe Wednesday too. What did you think
- 53:51Speaker 3: when they moved the Oaks back to eight forty at
- 53:54Speaker 3: night on Friday.
- 53:55Speaker 9: I think that they did a terrible job delivering the news.
- 53:57Speaker 9: And I talked to Carstangian about it. But I can
- 54:00Speaker 9: definitely understand why we needed to do it. It's not
- 54:03Speaker 9: rather wanting to and it's not gonna like it's gonna
- 54:05Speaker 9: make them a whole lot more money. You know, the
- 54:06Speaker 9: Oaks has grown stagnant over the years, and NBC came
- 54:10Speaker 9: to him and said, you're gonna have this specific spot
- 54:12Speaker 9: on national TV if you wanted to expose your sport, and.
- 54:15Speaker 3: It really makes sense. They held the handles they.
- 54:18Speaker 9: Had to do it, but they didn't tell the people
- 54:20Speaker 9: the right way. They didn't deliver the message. I think
- 54:22Speaker 9: everyone in Louisville would understand if we're gonna get two
- 54:25Speaker 9: days of national TV coverage in our city and our
- 54:28Speaker 9: great sport, it's worth the problems we're gonna have, and
- 54:31Speaker 9: if it doesn't work, we'll go back to the old way.
- 54:33Speaker 3: But the problem was in the delivery, not in the
- 54:35Speaker 3: factor that they run it in.
- 54:36Speaker 9: And I tell you the cdif people are getting have gotten,
- 54:41Speaker 9: they should have gotten a long time knocked by a
- 54:42Speaker 9: lot of people. But they're doing a good job of
- 54:44Speaker 9: turning things around in that's aspect too. And Bill and
- 54:46Speaker 9: I talked about it one day. You say, no, when
- 54:48Speaker 9: I took over, we're a five hundred million dollar market
- 54:49Speaker 9: cap company. We had to look at bottom line all
- 54:52Speaker 9: the time and drive the bottom line.
- 54:53Speaker 3: He's built it to twelve billion.
- 54:54Speaker 9: He said, we should do a lot of different things now.
- 54:56Speaker 9: And I think that if five two too. You see,
- 54:59Speaker 9: they've got to make they're publicly traded, right, you gotta
- 55:02Speaker 9: you can take the money to market bears and so.
- 55:04Speaker 9: But they keep trying to do new things. To night racing.
- 55:08Speaker 9: I think it has been fabulous for the local the
- 55:11Speaker 9: way they break out the happy hours to Thursday nights.
- 55:14Speaker 9: So we're not making any money on that stuff, but
- 55:15Speaker 9: they're doing some community service and they are really Kentucky.
- 55:19Speaker 9: With Churchill downs behind us, it's driving the entire industry
- 55:22Speaker 9: of this country.
- 55:22Speaker 3: Now. Yeah, and because it's it's a shrinking industry, but
- 55:25Speaker 3: Kentucky is in a healthy place compared to some other places,
- 55:28Speaker 3: so healthy, and everyone.
- 55:29Speaker 9: In the country looks up to. What we're doing is
- 55:31Speaker 9: try to model what we're doing. We're trying to lead
- 55:33Speaker 9: and it really starts at the top at Churchill. So
- 55:36Speaker 9: even though they deserved a lot of knocking for a
- 55:37Speaker 9: lot of years, I'm I'm a big fan. I think
- 55:41Speaker 9: Bill's done a good job. And I understand he is
- 55:43Speaker 9: corporate minded, corporate minded, everything's about making it.
- 55:46Speaker 3: But then he's he's brought it.
- 55:47Speaker 9: When one ship rises, they all rise when the water rises,
- 55:50Speaker 9: and he's he's done that for us.
- 55:52Speaker 3: And and now he's owning horses, which is a good thing. Yeah,
- 55:57Speaker 3: he's got some skin in the game as he does.
- 55:58Speaker 3: And i'm him and Bill and Bill Mudd.
- 56:00Speaker 9: I've got to for Bill Mudd right now, and they're
- 56:03Speaker 9: really seeing a different side of it and starting to
- 56:05Speaker 9: enjoy the racing.
- 56:06Speaker 4: Ethical no ethical.
- 56:13Speaker 9: If Bill Mud drops and draws into the derby because
- 56:15Speaker 9: one of his horses is number fourteen and wins, that
- 56:17Speaker 9: might we might you might have some problem.
- 56:20Speaker 3: You might want to scratch.
- 56:24Speaker 2: Well, how is the state of horse racing right now
- 56:27Speaker 2: throughout the country. Forget about just Kentucky.
- 56:29Speaker 9: Well, well, Kentucky's holding it all together for sure, But
- 56:32Speaker 9: New York's doing well. You know, they built a new
- 56:33Speaker 9: Belmont Park. We we went this is the last horse
- 56:36Speaker 9: building Baltimore. We've got problems in Florida that we're dealing with,
- 56:41Speaker 9: but I think that all worked out. You might have
- 56:42Speaker 9: a new racetrack built down there. It's a it's contracting,
- 56:46Speaker 9: is what it's doing. And you know, I like to
- 56:48Speaker 9: talk to say, it's like w W wrestling. When I
- 56:51Speaker 9: was a kid, every city had their own little wrestling group.
- 56:54Speaker 9: But when they went on T and T and you
- 56:56Speaker 9: could watch Andre the Giant every night instead of watching
- 56:59Speaker 9: you know, uh, Jerry Lawler, you were watching Andre the
- 57:02Speaker 9: Giant and it just contracted to one major group. We're
- 57:06Speaker 9: gonna end up with the big States having a big racetrack,
- 57:10Speaker 9: just like New York now is not going to have
- 57:11Speaker 9: Aqueduct and bell one. But there's no reason to anymore.
- 57:14Speaker 9: And most of the market is on TV. It's all
- 57:16Speaker 9: a big it's changing quickly, but it'll get figured out.
- 57:19Speaker 9: I think it's the oldest sport in America, sport of kings,
- 57:22Speaker 9: the sport of kings, which has become the sport of syndicates.
- 57:25Speaker 3: Well, and that that is I think for the everyday
- 57:29Speaker 3: better the syndicates are. They're they're frustrating. You know when
- 57:34Speaker 3: you have a horse going to the gate, that's a
- 57:35Speaker 3: different city.
- 57:36Speaker 9: I'm talking about sport of sendicate's like lest point throw
- 57:38Speaker 9: over it and yeah, the big aws and that's a
- 57:43Speaker 9: thing we need to fix. And people don't understand they're
- 57:45Speaker 9: not getting an edge and they're not betting after the
- 57:47Speaker 9: gate opens.
- 57:48Speaker 3: Everything it's just all the money money comes in late.
- 57:51Speaker 9: We need to get the technology up where it's incident
- 57:53Speaker 9: as soon as it gets in so it doesn't show
- 57:55Speaker 9: up right when the gates.
- 57:56Speaker 3: Breaks, which I like that, you know, like Naira, I know,
- 57:58Speaker 3: del Maar, a couple others. They put deadlines out in
- 58:01Speaker 3: front to make sure that Okay, you at least know
- 58:04Speaker 3: three minutes before post time where the cws.
- 58:07Speaker 9: But the majority eighty percent of the money's bet when
- 58:09Speaker 9: the horse of stuff on the racetractor warm up.
- 58:11Speaker 3: Yeah, so that's a problem too. So you're tighten that
- 58:13Speaker 3: window down.
- 58:14Speaker 9: But we can get the technology in place, and it's
- 58:16Speaker 9: just a matter of spending money, and it has to
- 58:17Speaker 9: happen to where as soon as the dollar goes in,
- 58:20Speaker 9: the odds changed instead of every thirty seconds, right right, right,
- 58:23Speaker 9: And the thing is so much out of state money
- 58:26Speaker 9: from all the eighty w's and things are dumped into
- 58:29Speaker 9: the pool in the last thirty seconds, so it doesn't
- 58:31Speaker 9: really show up until.
- 58:32Speaker 3: They go till they're going yeah, and they're coming around
- 58:34Speaker 3: the turret and you're like, wait, I thought there's six
- 58:36Speaker 3: to one, Now he's five to two.
- 58:37Speaker 9: Yeah, right, And that's because it's the odds are set
- 58:41Speaker 9: by such a smaller pool on the racetrack, all that
- 58:44Speaker 9: late money. He's got a big pool of money coming in.
- 58:46Speaker 9: If there's a big punner out there, that makes a
- 58:47Speaker 9: big play. It moves the odds, but it's it's there's
- 58:50Speaker 9: nothing illegal happening right, nobody's getting an edge, and that's
- 58:53Speaker 9: the perception. It looks like it looks like that guy
- 58:55Speaker 9: bet when they were eight to a mile down the track,
- 58:57Speaker 9: which would be a pretty good way to make money.
- 58:59Speaker 3: Are the are the ve I know, the vet scratches
- 59:01Speaker 3: some trainers are. It feels like there are more. Do
- 59:05Speaker 3: you think that that is an issue?
- 59:06Speaker 9: I think we're all under a lot more scrutiny in
- 59:08Speaker 9: today's environment and horse racing, and it's it'll work itself out.
- 59:12Speaker 9: I mean, I think that they're correct and scratching most
- 59:14Speaker 9: of them most of the time. You know, we don't
- 59:16Speaker 9: want catastrophe again. We don't want jockeys getting hurt. And
- 59:20Speaker 9: my theory at the barn is if they're if we're
- 59:22Speaker 9: gonna be wrong, let them be wrong and we have
- 59:24Speaker 9: a healthy horse in the barn, then be wrong and
- 59:25Speaker 9: letting me run a horse that I shouldn't run and
- 59:28Speaker 9: that you know, and sometimes the trainers we don't see
- 59:30Speaker 9: the force for the trees every day and your outside
- 59:33Speaker 9: eyes come along. Then it's this thing of being so
- 59:36Speaker 9: tight and so scrutinized. It is kind of new. It's
- 59:38Speaker 9: gonna work it soft. We're starting to use some good
- 59:40Speaker 9: technologies and seeing color slapt app. We can video a
- 59:42Speaker 9: horse jog up and down the road. It's up, it's
- 59:45Speaker 9: uploaded and back to us in two minutes, and it'll
- 59:48Speaker 9: light up a leg. Like he says, I can't see it,
- 59:50Speaker 9: but the AI I can, and until you technology too.
- 59:55Speaker 9: And every horse that runs in Kentucky, now, where's a
- 59:58Speaker 9: sensor in its saddle pad? Measures twenty four hundred motions
- 1:00:02Speaker 9: a second.
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: That's great.
- 1:00:03Speaker 9: And after the next day, after the next day, after
- 1:00:05Speaker 9: every race, I'll get a print out and it'll tell me, well,
- 1:00:08Speaker 9: your horse was hitting a little hard on the right front,
- 1:00:10Speaker 9: or wasn't staying on the ground pushing off correctly on
- 1:00:13Speaker 9: the left time, And I get it broken down in
- 1:00:15Speaker 9: a simple one through five system. One's perfect. Two, not
- 1:00:19Speaker 9: to worry about. Three, start doing some investigation. You get
- 1:00:21Speaker 9: to a five, you do a deep dive, whether that
- 1:00:23Speaker 9: be scans or pet scans, and things has to be
- 1:00:27Speaker 9: happy about that.
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: I would.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: And that's as much scrutiny as they're getting right now,
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: which I want to talk about in a minute.
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: But go ahead.
- 1:00:32Speaker 9: That's but this is a uh, it's a new technology again,
- 1:00:35Speaker 9: and we're built a huge database now how horses should
- 1:00:39Speaker 9: move into motions. But you know every Major league support
- 1:00:42Speaker 9: is doing it. Yeah, all have those sensors on.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: And then to your point, there's always friction with change,
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: and we are in the midst of a wad of changing.
- 1:00:50Speaker 9: Especially to get old man like me that don't even
- 1:00:52Speaker 9: know how to log down to a computer. And but
- 1:00:56Speaker 9: I got to tell everybody I'm open to it. I
- 1:00:58Speaker 9: love the technology part. I have people do it and
- 1:01:00Speaker 9: I make them put it on paper and hand it
- 1:01:01Speaker 9: to me. But there'll be a time when people will
- 1:01:05Speaker 9: be training horses and not believe we didn't have this technology.
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:01:08Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, when the young guy's coming up behind us,
- 1:01:10Speaker 9: it'll be so simple for them and help them.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: So right, let's talk about Mike Ropoli and Kenny mcpeaks.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: Really get into the argument right now with what's going on.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: The scrutiny behind horses getting mixed right when they're.
- 1:01:23Speaker 9: Getting you know, here's here's another problem that people don't
- 1:01:28Speaker 9: see understand. They okay, they're scrutinized on the racetrack when
- 1:01:33Speaker 9: they got we have veterinarians watching the horses train. If
- 1:01:35Speaker 9: they see when they don't like, they'll go back to
- 1:01:36Speaker 9: the barn. Then before you run, you have to get
- 1:01:38Speaker 9: them out and jog them up and down. They have
- 1:01:40Speaker 9: to pass a physical And then people don't understand, well,
- 1:01:44Speaker 9: if they've done all that, why are they scratching them
- 1:01:45Speaker 9: at the gate. And the reason is, and we don't
- 1:01:48Speaker 9: want that to ever end because they may be borderline.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: They think.
- 1:01:51Speaker 9: They say, well, I'm not positive, so I'm gonna give
- 1:01:53Speaker 9: this horse a benefit of the doubt to come onto
- 1:01:55Speaker 9: the racetrack and warm up. Now what you and you'll
- 1:01:57Speaker 9: see some of them scratched behind the gate, But what
- 1:02:00Speaker 9: you don't see is how many them warmed up and
- 1:02:01Speaker 9: they ran and ran well. And so do we want
- 1:02:05Speaker 9: him to just stop giving them benefit of doubt and
- 1:02:07Speaker 9: do more stretches at the barn or let them go
- 1:02:09Speaker 9: on the racetrack because some of them will warm up
- 1:02:10Speaker 9: and they'll be just fine. And there's a but but
- 1:02:13Speaker 9: nobody talks about that was one and we were watching
- 1:02:15Speaker 9: it ran and ended up in the winter circle.
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: Every bet they're they're they're focused on the negative more
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: so that gets that and you can only see that. Yeah,
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: yeah right, Well.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: Let's talk about the Derby field this year. Nick Raush
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: and I were talking a little bit earlier. Seems to
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: me there's really not a one particular horse that stands
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: like uh sends out like Sovereignty did last year in journalism.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: For that fact, who who are you looking at?
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: As far as Saturdays race, this is a wide open race.
- 1:02:42Speaker 9: I think I just said I haven't bet thirty years,
- 1:02:45Speaker 9: and last year I bet on Sovereignty and hit the
- 1:02:46Speaker 9: exactly because there we go, because he just stood out
- 1:02:49Speaker 9: and looking at the board at the price him getting
- 1:02:51Speaker 9: I said, this ship bet me two hundred exactly because
- 1:02:54Speaker 9: the two horse race.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: I need to hang out with you more often. You
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: need to tell me who bet one time in thirty years.
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: I don't gamble. I'd say I got enough riding.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: If they win, you're right, you gamble on yourself.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: I never wanted to leave here losing twice.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: I'm broke, and you might lose three times because Tammy
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: would leave it.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: Yeah, she'd be mad.
- 1:03:14Speaker 9: But I think I think I'm a shop around for
- 1:03:17Speaker 9: a long shot. I'm not going to tell you who
- 1:03:18Speaker 9: it would be. I mean my horse was Chief Wallaby,
- 1:03:20Speaker 9: but I'm gonna uly build my.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: Fan, build fans back here on the back. So I
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: grew up. I grew up. He was my hero in
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: high school.
- 1:03:26Speaker 9: Watching him over here, I always tell a story and
- 1:03:28Speaker 9: gets mad and we want to do it. But I
- 1:03:29Speaker 9: came pulled up in the parking lot one day and
- 1:03:31Speaker 9: he had won three races, and he walked out of
- 1:03:33Speaker 9: the place with a super hot model girlfriend and jumped
- 1:03:36Speaker 9: into three hundred z X and went out to his
- 1:03:38Speaker 9: fancy condo and he starty something years old.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: I said, I want to be that guy. I still
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: haven't ever had the sports car.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: What are you waiting on? I mean, you got the
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: money now.
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: I couldn't fit in for years. You can. Now that's
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: a certain but but that's that's who I like.
- 1:03:52Speaker 9: Chief Wall be eight to one, you get a big price,
- 1:03:54Speaker 9: and you know, if you get over twenty to one
- 1:03:57Speaker 9: on Baffor, throw them in your gimmicks because you knows
- 1:03:59Speaker 9: how to win this race.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: And the horses worked very well.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: I mean, as much as I hate to admit that you're.
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: Martine Garcia worked on both.
- 1:04:06Speaker 9: They worked like they worked like Bafford.
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: The horses work, so you know, the big price take
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: a shot. And uh, but.
- 1:04:14Speaker 9: I searched. I searched for some prices. One thing, I mean,
- 1:04:17Speaker 9: the one hole is not as bad as it used
- 1:04:19Speaker 9: to be.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: I want to Okay, so don't worry about Renegade.
- 1:04:22Speaker 9: Well, we still don't want it, but it's not It
- 1:04:24Speaker 9: was a kiss of death before because we had that
- 1:04:26Speaker 9: extension gate right, and the gates was so long. The
- 1:04:29Speaker 9: one hole was almost directly behind the rail when they broke,
- 1:04:32Speaker 9: and they would run into it if they duck to
- 1:04:34Speaker 9: the left, and you were screwed from the bat you
- 1:04:35Speaker 9: had no chance. They made a smaller gate the last
- 1:04:38Speaker 9: three or four years, and it's it's not as far behind.
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: So it's not.
- 1:04:41Speaker 9: I don't we don't have a study group to say
- 1:04:44Speaker 9: that the one horse is gonna win, but it's not
- 1:04:46Speaker 9: anything like it was.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: So and for I read Ortiz to want to ride
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: Renegade over the other two, that says a lot. Yeah,
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: it says what.
- 1:04:54Speaker 9: And his agent makes those final calls and he's the
- 1:04:56Speaker 9: best in the game, and so you know he would be.
- 1:05:00Speaker 9: If I'm betting a favorite, I'd go with the favorite.
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: With the one whole, and I reads a great enough
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: rider to get him around there. Still hasn't gotten that Derby,
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: though it will. Pat Day took him a long time
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: and he only had one.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: But I mean, it only takes one, that's right, exactly,
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: and then everybody knows you're coming in on out.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: You know, it's like winning a super Bowl.
- 1:05:17Speaker 9: Joe dan Marino never got a super Bowl, and I said,
- 1:05:21Speaker 9: I don't retire like dan Marino.
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: It's a hard thing to do.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: Before before we let you go, I do, I do
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: want you to tell one Pete Rose story because I
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: know you.
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: Got so many.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: Exactly, these guys love the Reds.
- 1:05:38Speaker 9: The best one was when I was Pete was already
- 1:05:40Speaker 9: kicked out of baseball, and you know, I know him
- 1:05:42Speaker 9: back when he was coaching.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: It was was it the Reds.
- 1:05:45Speaker 9: When we went Turfay all time, They'd be there every night,
- 1:05:46Speaker 9: and you got to know Pete liked to gamble.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: So one day he calls me.
- 1:05:53Speaker 9: He was in Cincinnati signing baseballs, and he was a
- 1:05:56Speaker 9: turf Way park watching races. And I had a horse
- 1:05:58Speaker 9: at Gulf Stream and he calls me. He says, what
- 1:06:00Speaker 9: about your horse, and Pete, I think we can win
- 1:06:02Speaker 9: today the horse wins. He calls me back what's your
- 1:06:04Speaker 9: address and your son's name, and he sent me My
- 1:06:07Speaker 9: son was about eight years old. Send him a Pete Rose.
- 1:06:09Speaker 9: Everyone nemon cards hit King Pete Rose with wow hits
- 1:06:13Speaker 9: on it. That's the coolest, that's a good story. But
- 1:06:15Speaker 9: my son calls me up and said, Dad, you never
- 1:06:17Speaker 9: heard of some guy named Pete Rose.
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: I love that, all right, guys, I got.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: It's always fun having you on. That's Dale Romans coming
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: from us on the backside. We're gonna take a break.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: Five two four one four fourteen fifty.
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: This is just the cats.
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: Boy.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: You had Dale Romans going a little bit ago and
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: you started playing that led Zeppelin. I've never seen him
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: go get so excited in my life. He's like, that's
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: my band. Oh he loved Oh he was going crazy
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: for led Zeppelin.
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: That's a good tell, yo. Yeah, absolutely, listen. It's been
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: fun today.
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: I mean, I am though, and I'm glad Nick Roush
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: has stayed and so Nick, if it's okay with you,
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: As we're looking for a uh oh, there's there's a horse.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: We gotta lose horse running towards us. Uh. Everybody that
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: they've got their head on the swivel, here come the outriders.
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: I gotta say, uh, being an outrider those people, I
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: wonder how one gets into that role. But they are
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: his experienced and as talented as it able to. I mean,
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: they've just kind of got this horse corral they're gonna
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: grab right, watch them, Watch he's gonna grab them. Right.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: People don't realize how dangerous a job that is right there.
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: Well, just the in general, there is a I used
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: to joke because there's a Kentucky tourism commercial about coming
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: to the horse park to see the friendliest horses around.
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: I'm like, have you been around a race horse? Like
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: they could be some ornery s Oh? Yeah, you know,
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: like you have to be very very careful around horses.
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: They are dangerous animals. And this guy is just elusive. Yeah.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: Well, the problem is it's so muddy they can't really
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: cut otherwise they're gonna fall off. They don't want to
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: put the horse that's loose cut off because you know
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: what's gonna happen, and they're gonna fall So they're trying
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: to keep it. No telling how much that horse is worth,
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: so they're trying doing everything they can to keep it
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: from falling. Injured in himself uh, in any fashion. So
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: I mean it's it's when it's a muddy track, it
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: makes it a thousand times worse. But yeah, as we're watching,
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: h I love that Todd Pletcher's just standing over here
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: trying to figure out and identify which horse it is.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: But yeah, I'd love to have him come over here
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: and talk to us. All right, if it's okay with you,
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: I do want to talk about a couple of things.
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: Hit me. I want to talk football. Yeah, okay, football. Yes.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: The question that I get asked the most is is
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: this team really as talented as a lot of people
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: are talenting them to be or is this just gonna
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: be an okay team and maybe down the road we'll
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: be okay because of the schedule they've got the next
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: couple of years.
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: So I think, to answer your question, Michael, they may
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: be better. It may not be reflective in the record,
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: because yeah, like you said, the schedule this week two
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: Alabama comes to town, then they travel to Texas, A
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: and m Not for the faint of heart. The part
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: that will be significantly more fun for fans is that, hey,
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: you finally have a modern offensive attack with a plus quarterback,
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: a quarterback that can change the outcome of a game,
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: that can elevate your team, that can raise your ceiling.
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: That's something that Mark Soups rarely had. He had it
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: with Will Levis, Steven Johnson. Good, not great, but you
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: didn't have that sort of kind of game changer. Like
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: Kenny Minshee. The way they talk about how their offense runs,
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: it'll be like an NFL offense where he can go
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: to the line, flip the call, switch the side of
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: the field, see the defense Like that is the kind
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: of offense that we've been dying to see. The other
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: part of a too, Michael we Kentucky was at its best.
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: It's because they had the guys in the churches. Stein
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: knows that at Oregon every single year he had Joe
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: Moore Award finalists, one of the three best offensive lines
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: in America. He brought a coach from over there, two
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: coaches from there, and then they signed three of the
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: top fifteen offensive line in the transfer a portal Lance
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: heard he might be a first round pick in next
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: year's NFL draft. They have some bonafide talent. Oh there's
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: my girl, prom queen. Sorry I I I was waiting
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: to get no, no, no, I get it. Don't worry. I
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: was waiting to catch a glimpse of her. She's a baute.
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: Well that's my Oaks horse ride. I get it. Don't
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: worry about it. But but like so so kind of.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: Like since the days of John Schlarman. I mean, when
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: John was there, we had the line you needed to
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: be able to be successful in the SEC football. Ever
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: since the departure, unfortunately of John and and losing a
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: good friend, the offensive line was almost non existent. I
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: mean that was the fun part for the entire line
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: because even though they didn't start, they knew everybody was
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: going to play because they kept switching them in out,
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: and they were consistently fresh the entire game.
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: They will Ston knows that in order to win hard games,
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: you have to be able to win in the trenches.
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: It doesn't matter how good your athletes are on the outside,
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: you have to be able to win in the trenches. Yeah,
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: Kentucky has all SEC talent on its offensive and defensive lines.
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: Yeah that is That's not been the case, Michael. There
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: was no players picked on Thursday or Friday in the
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: NFL draft this year. That had happened since twenty eighteen.
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: Like that that should tell you about where the talent
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: level where it dipped off? Right, Will Signuil has injected
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: talent back in the trenches to raise the four So
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: what I think, like you saw last year, Kentucky played
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: some close games, then they got their doors beat off, right,
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: I think this year.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: You should be exception to Vanderbilt, Right, but you.
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: Should expect what eleven twelve close games instead of like eight? Yeah? Right,
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: So if you put yourself in a chance to win,
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: it's a fifty to fifty game, right, They're gonna have
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: chances to win those. How many can they win? This?
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: I think their ceiling is ultimately gonna be determined about
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: how good are these playmakers? And we just don't know
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: because their experience, but they've dealt with some injury history.
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: How healthy you're gonna be they gonna be? That is
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: my big question mark. Can CJ. Baxter be the CJ.
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: Baxter we thought he could be at running back? Can
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: Nick Anderson or Shane Carr who's leveling up from the
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: Division two level?
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: Like?
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: How good are these playmakers? That is that is to
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: be determined and will ultimately will ultimately decide whether or
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: not Kentucky is in the postseason, playing in a bowl
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: game at six and six, seven and five, or if
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: they're right back at five and seven.
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: Well, see in what you're describing right now is what
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: it was like when hol Mummy was the head coach.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: I mean, people came to games, people were excited about
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: the football team because of the fact that it was
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: an offense, an exciting offensive dynamic that everybody's like, Okay,
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: I know we're gonna lose, but listen, it's fun game
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: to watch. So it might be the case this coming year.
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: But hopefully they draw from that and get more talent.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: They get the talent to stay here, they get talent
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: to improve. And I like will Stein's narrative. I mean,
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: he you listen to him interviewed, You listen to him
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: talk about the team. He is trying to design the
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: UK and you're like, Okay, I'm excited about this.
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: He sounds like one of us, Like if yeah, he
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: sounds like a guy like if I got a band, boy,
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: if I got to coach a football team, this is
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: what I would do. Any other part of it to Michael.
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: You know, last year there were people chanting John for
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: we want some roll right Like John's obviously there's there's
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: plenty of reasons why. Yeah, But I think ultimately it's
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: a good thing that the way things played out because
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: summer all, he has a lot of Mark Stoops in him,
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: you know, I mean, hell, he brought Brad White and
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: Chris Collins with him to Florida. Stein is almost the
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: antithesis of Stoops in every single way. And what I
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: mean by that is South End Josh. Excuse how many
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: times with South and Josh textan to our show about
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: the conservative soft cushions off zone defense.
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: I mean, no, in all fairness, nobody's as mad about
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: Kentucky athletics as Health and Josh.
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: But it was. But you know, there was a very
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: much a I gotta meet this guy. There was very
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: much a we are going to play this Ben, don't
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: break conservative style. Stein's just like dude, We're gonna freaking
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: let it rip. And it's not just offensive aggressiveness and
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: going down the field. It's defensive aggressiveness as well. It
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: is blitzing, It is doing a lot of different stuff
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: in the playbook, playing sticky man and man coverage, being aggressive.
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: You know, sometimes you play with fire and you might
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: get a little burned. But every once in a while
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: you get a big old bonfire and you have yourself
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: a party. And I think that's gonna be the case
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: this fall for Kentucky. Absolutely nixt thing.
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: You know, you got a little chocolate bar, you got
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: some Graham crackers, and you got some marshmallows. And you
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: know what, Michael Bennett, that point's really happy that that
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: is chapping championship in ingredients.
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: Is are the most universally like have you ever met
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: somebody who's likemores are gross? What? Oh god? That that
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: is the worst dad joke in the world.
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: Okay, actually, okay, all right, I didn't invent it.
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: I'm worth are you not? Really? If they're making them
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: your and you haven't had a couple of years, you'd be.
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: Like, like, marshmallow, Oh yeah, marshmallows are really the stick,
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: which is crazy.
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: But the combination of all three it's such a great.
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: If I can get I'll tell you what. If I
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: can get cracker, chocolate, marshmallow and another thing of chocolate,
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: then I'm more likely to have a double.
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: The chocolate double, the chocolate double, the fun. That's right, exactly,
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: exactly at all. I would like to try a crunch bar,
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: a little extra text.
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: That actually sounds wait wait wait, wait wait a crunch
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: bar is instead.
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: Of a hershey bar, you do a little crunch or
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: maybe a recent cup peanut butter.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: Oh, now I might do that one. Okay, all right,
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: favorite candy bar?
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: Right now, you got heath bar? Good? Join uh break
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: me off a piece of that kit cat bar. Yeah,
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: that is the first thing I steal from my kids
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: when they I did. I forgot real candy. Holidays we have.
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: It seems like every time I get rid of the
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: last holidays candy, they come home with more. It's all right,
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: We've got rid of our Christmas stuff. Here's Valentine's Day.
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: All right, we got rid of all that. Now here's
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: Eastern Yeah, it's candy all the time.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: You know what, there were so obese in the United
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: States because we have so many candy holidays.
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: You know what candy is really? I think it's still
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: a thing, but it's gone away that I really used
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: to love midnight milky ways?
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: What is dark chocolate milky way hard past I'm not
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: a chocolate fan, therefore I don't like dark.
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: Chocolate milky Ways candy.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm right there in the new is it nugat,
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: NuGet new is nugat man that is see, that's the
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: definition one.
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: Nobody knows, Michael, nobody, I am, there's no POSSI nobody
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: knows what nugat is. But it's delicious.
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: I want to read tomorrow on k sr dot com. Well,
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: Nick Roush, Michael Bennett wants.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: The definition of we are going to do an expos
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: on nugas. I don't know if I want to know what's.
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: Just kind of like chicken McNuggets. You don't want to
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: know how it's made. A hot dog on a one side. Yeah,
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: it's great, but you can't have it. You can't have
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: it all the time. Yeah, is that the coolest thing ever?
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: I mean, coming around the turn of three horses, all
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: Dale Romans coming together. But baby Ruth right here, Baby
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Ruth is my favorite candy.
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: Another awful food taken.
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: Reference though Okay, they thought, no, wait that's caddyshack. Sorry,
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: that's it. I gotta mixed up here is gpr there's
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: not that bad.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: Peeps are my favorite Easter canne he hates the people.
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, okay, Michael, Yeah, we have officially diagnosed you.
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: You and I know you have you and I both
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: have done a lot of radio and t J Walker
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: over the years. We know how bad his food takes are.
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: Michael Michael's maybe worse.
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: Hey, you know what, at least hey, we're reading West
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: food right like we're raining it back in. I have
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: been doing the pep That is one thing you change
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: your diet and then you don't want some of the
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: sweet stuff as much. Well, you know what.
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: So the first thing my son wanted to do when
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: we got here at five forty five this morning, He's like,
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: I want to go get a donut. And of course
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: I used to think, Okay, that's exactly what I want
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: to go have five donuts today zero I just.
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: Have no interest.
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: I had my first one really weak today.
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: I will say, of all of the things that I
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: have given up as living a small, smaller, healthier lifestyle,
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: donuts are one that I'm not kicking. Really, that's and
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: some of it's I got young kids bringing donuts.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: See, I got young kids too, and they always buy
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: they always buy a donut before the show. And then
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: he holds out to eat the doughnut till after just
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: the cats. It's like you're killing me, and he gets cranky,
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: you know, it's good. It's a good practice, and.
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: You're like, you're like white Goodman staring at the donut
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: with them.
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: In the healthy life.
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: You don't have any issues like this guy out. I
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: did run the mini last week.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: I saw that congratulation.
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: Think you we dropped about twenty five pounds in the problem.
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: Some of it is like, I know you, I gotta
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: keep up with kids. I gotta have the energy to
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: do it. You know, they're a lot so if you're uh,
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: it only gets more the older. They get on coffee
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: to keep you going all day. You know that eventually
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: that that that wears off, that wears off. So you know,
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: we're feeling good, We're ready to roll. I'm finally not
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: sore from running though. It's one of those I was
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: so much like right afterwards, Michael, I was like, why
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: would anybody ever do this? But once the the cramps
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: subsided and I I was able to kind of reflect
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: on it, you know, I thought Scotty Davenport had a
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: great interview on WLK why talking about it. It is
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: really cool to see just all of the support from
- 1:20:10Speaker 3: the city, all the runners, like it's right, it was,
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: it was. It was very cool. Yeah, it's a cool track,
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: you know, like especially for an out of town or like,
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: I mean, I love it here. But if you're just
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: coming from out of town and you get to run
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: around the infield while the horses are training, this is
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: pretty dark cool. So it was a it was a
- 1:20:25Speaker 3: very good experience. I'm glad I did it well.
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: He's one of the guys I'm mad at because you know,
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: I had to drive around this place for a half
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: an hour trying to figure out how to get into
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: the backside because every road was shut down. Yeah, I'm
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: going down the wrong road backwards and policeman's waving me down,
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: so you can't go this way. I'm like, okay, tell
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: me where to go. He didn't know where to tell me,
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: so I finally found out. And then there's all the
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: sinking runners out there in the middle. But I bet
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: it is cool to do that. Now, Can you do
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: a marathon like the guy did in London?
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: From where was he? From? Night? Can you in an
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: hour and fifty eight minutes? The the part about this
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: feat is that, okay, it is just running.
- 1:21:05Speaker 4: How long did it take you to do the half?
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: Longer than that?
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: Yeah? Two eleven? So he'd be. He did double the
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: mileage in twelve and thirteen less minute. So how many
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: minute mile is that for you? About ten? I was
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: at nine okay? Then I started cramping at the end
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: and we were hobbling around. It was a it was
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: a whole ordeal. Somebody put you in a supermarket. Uh,
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: I needed it.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: But can you imagine he probably have a twenty four
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: pack of beer and probably been through more than half
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: of it.
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: Did I did take a shot of fireball while running?
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: Yeah, drink and Richard Rigney would be thank you right.
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: It did not go down easily, but we got her down.
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: But I will say the crazy stat of that marathon
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: run was the you know those scooters that you can
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: rent and got around town.
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: Yeah, the green and white one, the ones that got you.
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: Yes, well, the top speed on one of those in
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: London is twelve and a half miles an hour. You
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: could have gunned it for the entire marathon and you
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: still would have been a mile behind that runner.
- 1:22:05Speaker 10: Wow, those things are moving, you know scuds? Oh yeah,
- 1:22:11Speaker 10: all too well? And he was he was running that.
- 1:22:14Speaker 10: He's unfathomable.
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: Uh. I did some of the race with my friend
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: who did the marathon for the first time. He wanted
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: to complete a marathon. And it's just it's so hard
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: to just wrap your brain around what that man accomplished.
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: A true, a true just evolution. Agree, suck it like
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: I'm gonna beat you. Humans should not Humans should not
- 1:22:36Speaker 3: be able to move that fast for that long. It's incredible,
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: incredible feet.
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: We gotta take our last break when we come back.
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: I want to talk about Tyron Soakes, just for a
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: few minutes.
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: Get that out.
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: He's out.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: No, he's not all of a sudden, he's got no
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: If I if I, if I said Tyrone Stokes, and
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: then we're gonna talk about Diego Pavia, you both would
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: be out.
- 1:22:56Speaker 3: Diego Pavia.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: Let's gonna take our last break. Well, eait a minute,
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: this is just a cat.
- 1:23:21Speaker 3: You really got me going.
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: You've gotten a song.
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: I'm yeah, you really got.
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: Me though, you've gotten me saw I guess that night
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: slection today all right, wanted to go. I don't know
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: why I'm saying.
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: I haven't read a tweet today, our text today, So
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: that's my fault time.
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: We haven't read it. Do you want me to pull
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: them up?
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: Yeah? Why don't you pull them up? And we'll go
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: through a few of them.
- 1:23:49Speaker 4: Have we not gotten it?
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: I know?
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: Well, I mean we went from uh ned Toffee to
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: Hans and on Amaron, the owners of uh uh so Happy,
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: and then we went from there we went straight to
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: Dale Romans. I haven't been able to pull anything out.
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: So we do have some breaking Derby news too. We
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: do tactic out of the Kentucky Derby. Who does that
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: put in?
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: Uh?
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: I'm a little closer.
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: I think it will be shoot.
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: Oh well, who's Corona diorro is?
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: Who we want to? Got a long way to go shoot.
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: But you know what, I think they got there in
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: that movie Smoking the Bandit. I think that I think
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: they got.
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: There between the two of you. That is the dumbest
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: movie ever. Of course, that's one of his favorite movies
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: right there.
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: Let's let's talk about that. No, not Ted, you love
- 1:24:37Speaker 3: Smoking the Bandit too?
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: Oh yeah, great, so he told you watched it last week.
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: Great White would be I believe.
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: Great another animal. So we got the puma and great White.
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: Great White, Great White is beautiful.
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: Tucky Derby's turning into a zoos.
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: I kind of it is kind of like we are
- 1:24:51Speaker 3: right now in this booth I, uh, I kind of
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: wanted uh great white to run. He was entered not
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: in the pet day I think it was in the
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: pat day ole, so I was kind of hoping to
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: get him in the undercart. Yeah.
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: Hey, the horses like running in the mud or not? Patrick, Mr.
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: Some do like to run in the mud. There are
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: there are probably far more that do not. Then here's
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: the reason. Why would you like running behind somebody that's
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: flapping mud all the way up in your eyes? So exactly,
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: so there are ones like what we were.
- 1:25:21Speaker 4: Talking about yesterday. We need to put goggles on these.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: Well exactly, it won't it won't work, but they'll freak
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: out even more with goggles on. But no, they a
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: lot of horses do not like it. There are specific
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: horses that it's perfect for them for some reason, they
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: just enjoyed it and they could be a speed horse,
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: get out front and they keep that lead. Yeah, because
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: nobody wants to catch up.
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: Or it slows everybody else down, or they can kind
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: of dig in and grind past them. Yeah. But you know,
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: fortunately the knock on wood knocking all the woods around
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: here that you can find, I don't think we're going
- 1:25:51Speaker 3: to be dealing with too much of that this weekend.
- 1:25:53Speaker 3: It feels like the rain is coming through today and
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: we should get a nice thurby Friday Saturday. Here at
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: your dance. Which can you remember a time when it
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: didn't rain?
- 1:26:04Speaker 8: No?
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: I cannot. I never. Just just to let you know,
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: I cannot remember it another time.
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: So let's bring out our PGA voice.
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: I know, but I've got a whisper it because if
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: I say it, listen.
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: People have nicknamed me Nostredamus Bennett because I this man.
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: Came on air Ralph three weeks before Thunder over Louisville
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: was like, ah, hope thunder doesn't get canceled again. It's like, Michael,
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: that is almost in a month.
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: I know, you know what it rained on thunder that's right. Yeah,
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: well it was funny though.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: We're you know, the last week Thursday morning, when my
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: friends and their horse so Happy, was doing his last workout.
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: We were there with Mark Glatt, the trainer, and Anna
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: came up with this idea because she likes to do
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: a lot of posting. If you want to follow them,
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: follow Saints Sinners and uh on Instagram, They're on Facebook,
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: They're on everything. But she said, let's act like we
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: won the Kentucky derby. Mark Glatt glared at her and says,
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: that's bad luck, that's all, and she goes, oh, so
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: we shouldn't and that's all. He turned around and walked away.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: It's like, oh my gosh, man, that guy is just
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: I mean, I'm kind of with Mark on that though.
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: That doesn't that doesn't feel like good juju.
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: Actually I agree with you. I agree.
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: All right, basketball, we didn't get the big player that
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: will remain nameless from now.
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: We got a bunch of over okay, good. Yeah, I'm
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: I'm in the same boat too. I was really yesterday
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: because I'm I just wanted to I just wanted to
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: talk horses this week. And then said he was tiring
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: Stokes day.
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: But well, not just that, but the whole mo Williams
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: and that thing, I mean, which was weird.
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and I'm yeah, but Williams did send that
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: tweet that was well let's go time. Yeah, that was odd.
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: That was the whole thing just stunk from the jump.
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: And I don't think anybody but the Kentucky coaches thought
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: they actually had a chance.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: Which that's the that read the room read the room, guys, right,
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: I mean nobody was pretty So are you at a
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: point where it's almost panic mode?
- 1:28:09Speaker 3: Are you okay?
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: What are your thoughts on this whole development of the
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: team right now?
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: Uh? I always was of the belief that, hey, Pope,
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: you want to stick around pass next year, well then
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: you build a roster. And he put all his chips
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: in Tyron Stokes his basket and it was a miscalculation.
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: He messed up.
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: And so is that gonna cost him his job?
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: Then? Is that what you're saying? Probably, because my big
- 1:28:33Speaker 3: thing with Pope in general is that I think he's
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: a good x's and oh's coach, but he has not
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: had the sort of talent that can raise the ceiling
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: to where it needs to be with Kentucky basketball. Yes,
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: he's He's want some big games, right the Duke game
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: that he's never lost to Tennessee.
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: John at Arkansas and you write game.
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: Come back against Gonzaga, Like, he has some big wins,
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: but to consistently do it, and to do it in
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: the NCAA tournament, you need to have that sort of
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: top tier talent. He went out and got a guy
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: with abum knee last year and thought that turns out
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: the guy with a bum knee, still had abum knee.
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: Like yeah, well but even so, there was a huge
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: risk that he took. I think it was a mistake.
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: But nevertheless, this is the team that he's got. He
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: has room to add a few more players. It's gonna
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: be a lot of overseas guys. It sounds like, And
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: here's the thing, Michael, what have we seen from these
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: overseas guys? It tells you that they're going to be ready.
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: It worked for Illinois.
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: Yeah, well here's every Yeah yeah, Yeleovich gave what much
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: to be desired. My big thing is like Amari Williams
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: work because he had experience in college basketball. A lot
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: of these guys aren't gonna have that experience. So will
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: it work out? I am going to be skeptical. I
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: hope that it works out, but I'm I'm skeptical.
- 1:29:52Speaker 5: That it does.
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: You are I'm trying to be at my best optimistic
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: about it. It's really difficult right now to be optimistic,
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: but I I want to stay that way.
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: I was telling rals earlier on my show. It's one
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: of those things where there's no star power on this team.
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: And if you think back to your one of Mark Pope.
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: There was no star power on that team. I think
- 1:30:11Speaker 4: this team's gonna resemble that first year's team more so
- 1:30:14Speaker 4: than last.
- 1:30:14Speaker 3: Year's if they got enough shooting. That's that's the big issue,
- 1:30:18Speaker 3: is if these final pieces he adds to the puzzle
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: need to have competent outside shooters because right now there's
- 1:30:26Speaker 3: just you have to create space. We saw with Cali
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: Perry that's where he struggled. He didn't have enough guys
- 1:30:31Speaker 3: to create space on the floor, to create these driving lanes.
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: Because I do like Wilkins and Zoom Diallo. That is
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: a nice one two punch with creators in the back court,
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: but are they gonna have room to operate? Right? Like
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: Malcho Moreno should be improved, but so far, Kim Williams
- 1:30:45Speaker 3: is really your only outside shooting threat. You gotta have
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: more than just Cam Williams.
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and he had a slow start last year because
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: I know he can shoot, but I think sometimes the
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: nervousness of I'm finally playing for a really good school
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: got to him and he just couldn't relax. But then
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: right before he got injured, he started relaxing and shooting
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: a lot better. So I'm like you, I like Cam Williams.
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: My problem is that, yes, shooting was the biggest link
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: last year in some defensive side. I mean defense was
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: I hate huge just of the issue that I think
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: people miss as well.
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: That's the other part with the Euros is that, Yeah,
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: Pope isn't a great defensive coach.
- 1:31:20Speaker 5: Nope.
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: Jellovich, for as fun as he could be at times offensively, rebounding, passing, Yeah,
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: had the least amount of self awareness from a defender
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: I've ever seen in my wife. He got lost on
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: the flour all the time, did not know how to
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: rotate in health defense? Whatsoever? Can Pope coach that with
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: these guys?
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: Well? Did he have the basketball?
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: IQ?
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: Is my question, and I'm concerned he did not have
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: the basketball.
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: And that goes into the coaching aspect of it with
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: these internationals where they're not used to right.
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: It's just it's a completely it's NBA style basketball over.
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: It's the same but different, right, Yeah, And so that
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: that's the part you gotta be concerned. And I think
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: the worst part of the Stokes decision period is just
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: what it's going to do for the fan base over
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: the next few months. It's going to feel like Mark
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: Stoups last offseason. It just is it is going to
- 1:32:06Speaker 3: be a slog this season.
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, I mean it was only it's it's
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: culminating now to the point where, listen, this is the
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: beginning of the end, is what it kind of feels like.
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: And I don't want to say that. I want to
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: believe and have hope that Mark Pope is going to
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: turn it around and somehow, some way this team is
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: going to gel together with a bunch of no names
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: like he did his first year.
- 1:32:29Speaker 4: Hoping Pope baby.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: I mean yeah, I mean, I don't want to be
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: Nick Rausch and pessimistic.
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: I want to be optimistic football guy. Well that that
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: that's that's fair. I do the the other element of
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: all of this, Markope's going to a new boss this summer,
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: so uh, that's going to be the big whatever you
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: think about him, even if he had a great offseason,
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: the least was going to be tighter because you've seen
- 1:32:55Speaker 3: in pro sports, new GM comes in they want their
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: guy to be the coach, new ad coach, and they
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: want to pick there got to be the coach.
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: Well, see, new president comes in, he wants his own
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: ad and that's why I'm kind of surprised. We're with
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: the out the ad and you know, Eli Kappolitutle is
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: getting ready to retire. I mean, go ahead, let's bring
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: the new president the part. I'm surprised that they're not
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: even close to hiring an ad right now. They're saying, well, okay,
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: we'll probably have somebody in by June thirtieth. They haven't
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: even enterne is that he's done exactly.
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: I wonder how much of that is Eli Capitaluto nothing
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: coach speak, you know, like I gotta saying, but there
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: might be somebody lined up either way. That is a
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: huge decision that we don't really know much about, right right.
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: Well, anyway, all right, let's talk about Saturday. Your pick
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: for the Kentucky Derby one fifty two. Uh that you say, everybody,
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: put all the money down, take your mortgage, put this
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: money down on this bed is going to be?
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: Who I am one of those I like to I
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: usually do like a five horse tribox. I think, holy cowal, Yeah,
- 1:34:00Speaker 3: that's that's usually you know, a good solid big Derby bet.
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: I think this year is not gonna better even there's
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: a lot, yeah, there's a lot of long shots that
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: I like, I really like emerging market. I like incredible,
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: I like full effort. I think the move Michael Bennett
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: is the key further Ado over all those bombs. I
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: think the way there's still going that route. Think. I
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: think I'm going further Ado. I think fast as we
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: just had spin thrifts. I think people are just overlooking
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: further Ado because the keenlin Field was weak and he
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: might just be the best of the bunch.
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: Ned Toffee, please stop, I know, because when I go
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: up to him, and I've known Ned for a while,
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: it's like, now I'm screwing his name up like the reporter.
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: And every time you say I'm gonna go up horse,
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: I mean, in all fairness, Ted's a more common first
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: name than.
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: That it is.
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: But I gotta think, Okay, no candy, Candy, I gotta
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: think candy. I love toffee, toffy, toffee, toffee. That's how
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: I had to do it. Okay, you're going further Ado
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: for you.
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: I think that I haven't made my final decision, but
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: I think that is that's ultimately. I want to see
- 1:35:05Speaker 3: brade Get in the Winter circle. He gotta win, but
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: he wasn't in the Winter Circle. On Derby Day. He's
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: gotta get in the winter circle. I like full effort. Tuesday,
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: oh do you? Full effort? Okay, a fun day. Thank
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: you so much for doing this. Always fun with you.
- 1:35:19Speaker 3: Just a tip, I know it.
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: Tomorrow we'll be backside one more day, so hopefully we'll
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: have some other guests as well.
- 1:35:26Speaker 3: Terry Finley might join us from West Point Theraprest. Stay
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: right there.
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: Tomorrow will be one more day backside Churchill s
