Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: 106.7 Light FM. Happy Monday. Cubby with Nina Del Rio
- 0:04Speaker 1: filling in for Christine today who's under the weather.
- 0:07Speaker 2: All right.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I got to ask because if you're a boomer or
- 0:10Speaker 1: Gen Xer, you might remember choosing between smoking or non-smoking
- 0:14Speaker 1: at a restaurant or airplane or whatever. But at restaurants now,
- 0:18Speaker 1: some places might be doing the same thing with cell phones.
- 0:22Speaker 1: What do you think of this? As we all know,
- 0:24Speaker 1: many people don't know how to be discreet when they're
- 0:27Speaker 1: talking on the cell phone.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Yes.
- 0:28Speaker 1: And if can become pretty disruptive. And some restaurants and
- 0:32Speaker 1: bars have started asking people to put their phones into
- 0:34Speaker 1: lockable pouches when they arrive, like.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Some concerts and shows have been doing. And this might
- 0:40Speaker 3: become a thing.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Others, it says here, offer perks for voluntary giving up
- 0:45Speaker 1: their phones, like a bottle of wine, or some Chick-fil-A
- 0:48Speaker 1: locations have a cell phone coops challenge where groups can
- 0:52Speaker 1: stash their phones in a box in exchange for free
- 0:55Speaker 1: ice cream. So it's already kind of happening right now.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I got to tell you, I kind of like it
- 1:02Speaker 1: because I have a hard time giving up my phone. Oh.
- 1:05Speaker 1: But when I do, just give me 15 minutes without it.
- 1:09Speaker 1: When I come off my little shaking fit, I calm down.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I realize I actually don't need it.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Do you need to have it, though, in a pouch?
- 1:17Speaker 2: Can you just put it in your pocket for 15 minutes?
- 1:19Speaker 2: Or is it that temptation?
- 1:21Speaker 1: No, because it's the temptation. It's too easy just to
- 1:23Speaker 1: grab it. I need it somewhat inconvenient.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I feel like maybe it should be voluntary. The sections
- 1:29Speaker 2: I get, I actually... I don't... And for concerts, everybody
- 1:32Speaker 2: has their phone up. Like, you're not looking at the
- 1:33Speaker 2: show anymore. You're just looking at your phone.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Nobody's enjoying the moment.
- 1:35Speaker 2: And it's always in your face, you know, somebody else's phone. Right.
- 1:38Speaker 2: So that I actually understand. But at a restaurant, I
- 1:42Speaker 2: don't know if I want to put my phone... I
- 1:44Speaker 2: just leave it in my purse, like, so I don't
- 1:46Speaker 2: even touch it. Right. You know, and I find it
- 1:49Speaker 2: rude when someone's... Unless they have something, they say, oh,
- 1:51Speaker 2: I'm waiting for a call from my kid. You know?
- 1:53Speaker 3: I was thinking about that.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Like, I.
- 1:55Speaker 3: If my wife and I go on a date night,
- 1:56Speaker 3: you might need the phone on you.
- 1:57Speaker 2: You might need it.
- 1:58Speaker 1: But if I throw that out, like say I don't
- 2:01Speaker 1: really need the phone, I think if I had a
- 2:03Speaker 1: choice at a restaurant, cell phone section or no cell
- 2:06Speaker 1: phone section, I would try the no cell phone section
- 2:08Speaker 1: just to go back to 1987.
- 2:10Speaker 2: But you need your phone actually taken away from you?
- 2:13Speaker 3: You do need it taken away. I get now... So
- 2:15Speaker 3: I have an Apple Watch too.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Oh.
- 2:17Speaker 1: And if your phone is close enough, you can still
- 2:19Speaker 1: get a text message on your phone.
- 2:22Speaker 3: So I can maybe... have that on me if there
- 2:25Speaker 3: is an emergency. But I don't know.
- 2:26Speaker 1: The question is, do you think more restaurants will be
- 2:30Speaker 1: doing no phone section, kind of like a modern day
- 2:33Speaker 1: no smoking section?
- 2:34Speaker 2: I don't mind a no phone section. I just think
- 2:36Speaker 2: putting it in the pouch should be voluntary.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Because something about that, like, I don't want to have
- 2:42Speaker 2: to wait, you know, to get my phone back. I
- 2:44Speaker 2: don't know who you are. You're just a restaurant.
- 2:46Speaker 3: It also.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Well, in the article I'm reading, it kind of said
- 2:50Speaker 1: what you just mentioned. Some places are interested in just
- 2:53Speaker 1: experimenting with the voluntary phone phase.
- 2:55Speaker 2: You know what's interesting, too, is like New Jersey Transit,
- 2:59Speaker 2: for instance, I'm assuming LIRR and Metro North have the same.
- 3:02Speaker 2: They have these quiet cars. where you're not supposed to
- 3:04Speaker 2: be on your phone, there's always someone in there who
- 3:07Speaker 2: ruins it. Like there's always some gizmo on the phone going, hello, hello,
- 3:11Speaker 2: talking about nothing important while everybody else is quiet and
- 3:14Speaker 2: you want to punch them in the face. Right.
- 3:15Speaker 3: They act like they're at home.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yeah. And so somebody has to police it. So who's
- 3:18Speaker 2: policing it? The conductor's not there sometimes. And depending on
- 3:22Speaker 2: the person, you're going to say something or you're not.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:24Speaker 2: If they're young, I might say something.
- 3:25Speaker 3: If they're older, they look mean.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I don't say anything. Right. So, you know, do waiters
- 3:29Speaker 2: and waitresses have to police this now? They got enough
- 3:31Speaker 2: on their plates.
- 3:32Speaker 3: I do like the whole reward if you do away
- 3:36Speaker 3: with it.
- 3:36Speaker 2: That I would.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Like the restaurants that are saying, you know, a free
- 3:38Speaker 1: bottle of wine if you can make it or free dessert.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:41Speaker 3: If you can do something to the very end. I
- 3:43Speaker 3: like that. Like Chick-fil-A.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Again, not every Chick-fil-A location is doing this, but they
- 3:47Speaker 1: have a cell phone coop challenge. And you just if
- 3:49Speaker 1: you go in there for lunch with a group. You
- 3:51Speaker 1: put your phones in there.
- 3:52Speaker 3: At the very end, you get ice cream if you
- 3:53Speaker 3: make it. I know it sounds like we're kids, but
- 3:55Speaker 3: that's the kind of thing we need sometimes.
- 3:57Speaker 2: We need a little treat.
- 3:57Speaker 3: A little treat. Your thoughts on this?
- 4:00Speaker 2: 44363 on text.
