- 0:06Speaker 1: hanging out this morning with Andrew Larson. Of course, Andrew
- 0:08Speaker 1: comes to us from Larsen Home Services the website Larsenhome

- 0:16Speaker 1: Home Services dot Com. From gutters to roofing, the insulation
- 0:20Speaker 1: experts from the attic up, I do believe, is what
- 0:23Speaker 1: Andrew likes to say. Of course you can learn more
- 0:25Speaker 1: online Larsen Home Services dot Com. Dolphin number six so
- 0:27Speaker 1: eight five three five forty three forty three. That's five
- 0:30Speaker 1: three five forty three forty three, right, experts from the
- 0:33Speaker 1: attic up. That's your Uh, that's what you kind of
- 0:36Speaker 1: kind of.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Self proclaimed, Yes, as self proclaimed. I mean nobody like
- 0:40Speaker 2: dubbed us that. But it is like every being of
- 0:45Speaker 2: my soul is roofing gutters and we some say insulation
- 0:52Speaker 2: insulations the way people look us up, but I like
- 0:54Speaker 2: to say home performance because we truly understand the way
- 0:59Speaker 2: you're home performs. Now. I can't fix an HVAC your
- 1:04Speaker 2: h VAC units, I can't service them, but we have
- 1:08Speaker 2: come into people's homes where they thought they needed more insulation,
- 1:10Speaker 2: and upon checking, uh, temperatures coming in or out of
- 1:15Speaker 2: the AC unit or the furnace at different times of
- 1:19Speaker 2: the year, say hey, your furnace and your your or
- 1:23Speaker 2: your ac is not it's not functioning properly, like we're
- 1:26Speaker 2: not just there to come in and blowing more insulation
- 1:29Speaker 2: and is definitely not a cure all.
- 1:32Speaker 1: What's what's what I find amazing is uh, you mentioned
- 1:36Speaker 1: you know, really doing that that the work is thorough.
- 1:39Speaker 1: It's not just uh, I will throw a bunch of
- 1:41Speaker 1: stuff at and hope for the best. It's literally thorough.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And you talk about the experts from the attic up.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I do a show some shows with some doctors, some
- 1:50Speaker 1: veterinarians and others like people you know, very highly highly educated,
- 1:55Speaker 1: very very smart. And one of the things they encounter
- 1:57Speaker 1: oftentimes is people will think they'll either like go to
- 2:00Speaker 1: doctor Google and think that they've got you know, they've
- 2:02Speaker 1: they've googled the symptoms and they've diagnosed it themselves. There's
- 2:06Speaker 1: a reason why you want to go to an expert
- 2:09Speaker 1: to get there, to get their insight, their opinion, and
- 2:12Speaker 1: their expertise. And that happens I know in your line
- 2:16Speaker 1: of work as well, Andrew, there are times where people
- 2:18Speaker 1: think it's one thing and you're kind of illustrating it there.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Folks often thinks the problem, think the problem is one thing,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and it turns out to be completely another. Let's talk
- 2:27Speaker 1: a little bit about some of the stuff you've encountered
- 2:29Speaker 1: with situations like that.
- 2:31Speaker 2: You know, it's so funny you brought that up, because
- 2:33Speaker 2: I was gonna be kind of my lead in was.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I literally called my doctor before and I was like, hey, look,
- 2:40Speaker 2: I was on web MD and he's like, stop right now,
- 2:45Speaker 2: don't say another word or we're done. That's insulting to me.
- 2:49Speaker 2: It's like you squearing, like what it's like, let me
- 2:54Speaker 2: guess you've got cancer or age. I'm like, yes, anyway,
- 3:01Speaker 2: well so yeah, So what I wanted to do is
- 3:03Speaker 2: for brobably the next four or five, maybe six weeks
- 3:05Speaker 2: is take specific, specific specific instances or cases with the
- 3:10Speaker 2: customer where they called in for something that they thought
- 3:13Speaker 2: they had wrong. And if someone calls in for something
- 3:16Speaker 2: like that, and our appointment setters seem to kind of
- 3:19Speaker 2: like push past that. This is why because we get
- 3:22Speaker 2: people call in all the time and say I need
- 3:25Speaker 2: this done or I need this done. Okay, great that
- 3:28Speaker 2: I'll put that in the notes because usually when especially
- 3:33Speaker 2: when it comes to we'll call it insulation work or
- 3:35Speaker 2: I like to say home performance work, it's usually not
- 3:38Speaker 2: the case. So we had somebody call in and they
- 3:41Speaker 2: called it and they boil boy tongue twister specifically asked
- 3:47Speaker 2: if we will do insulation around windows now, it's not
- 3:53Speaker 2: a difficult thing to do. Unfortunately, sometimes we do find
- 4:00Speaker 2: with our infrared cameras that you can very easily see
- 4:03Speaker 2: that a window was put in, trimmed out, and either
- 4:07Speaker 2: they stuffed some fiberglass insulation around the window, which was
- 4:11Speaker 2: very common thirty years ago. Just take the pink stuff
- 4:16Speaker 2: and shove it around the window. It does absolutely nothing
- 4:19Speaker 2: besides filter air. Now we use the spray phone. We
- 4:23Speaker 2: use a one part spray phone and you fill in
- 4:24Speaker 2: that area and it's good. It doesn't it insulates, but
- 4:28Speaker 2: most importantly, it air seals. It stops the air for
- 4:31Speaker 2: moving through anyway. So this home owner said, my windows
- 4:33Speaker 2: are super leaky. I don't think they're insulated around the window.
- 4:36Speaker 2: No problem, move past that because we're going to come
- 4:38Speaker 2: and check it out when we get there. So we
- 4:41Speaker 2: get there and you know, a really good one of
- 4:45Speaker 2: the most scientific tests that you can possibly use is
- 4:49Speaker 2: the backside of your hand. We have a lot of
- 4:53Speaker 2: feeling receptors on the backside of our hand, and if
- 4:55Speaker 2: you want to feel airflow, just put the backside of
- 4:58Speaker 2: your hand up to it. You can feel heat really well.
- 5:00Speaker 2: You feel that air. And upon inspection, yes, there was
- 5:04Speaker 2: some air moving through there, but it was but it
- 5:07Speaker 2: wasn't actually through the side of the window, through the
- 5:09Speaker 2: window itself, all right, So what's going on? Are the
- 5:13Speaker 2: windows bad? Upon more inspection check the attic. Attic had
- 5:18Speaker 2: a ton of insulation in it, but it was not
- 5:21Speaker 2: air seiled, so through stack effect, we're losing a ton
- 5:25Speaker 2: of heat in the winter. They had really adequate insulation
- 5:28Speaker 2: for the summer to keep their ceiling from turning into
- 5:31Speaker 2: a radiant oven, but for winter we need air ceiling.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Then they went down in the basement and inspected, well,
- 5:38Speaker 2: these people had had somebody come and spray foam their
- 5:42Speaker 2: rim joys now upon. If you've listened to the show before,
- 5:46Speaker 2: you know that that's where we take a lot of
- 5:48Speaker 2: our air in in the winter. As that hot air
- 5:51Speaker 2: warms or rises, that we create the warm air from
- 5:55Speaker 2: our furnace rises, it goes through the ceiling because we
- 5:59Speaker 2: don't have proper air ceiling that our house has to
- 6:01Speaker 2: bring air in from somewhere, and the easiest spot is
- 6:04Speaker 2: usually the lowest spot. It's the rim joices in the basement.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Usually if you look up there, you'll see some of
- 6:09Speaker 2: the pink fiberglass shoved up there. Does absolutely nothing except
- 6:13Speaker 2: filter dust, doesn't stop the air from coming in at all.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So they had their rim joice air sealed, but they
- 6:22Speaker 2: had no air ceiling in the attic. Okay, I don't
- 6:25Speaker 2: know the best way to equate that, but it's completely backwards,
- 6:29Speaker 2: completely backwards. We can't treat one area and not treat
- 6:35Speaker 2: in other areas. So what they did essentially by spray
- 6:38Speaker 2: foaming those rim joices, because another contractor came over and said,
- 6:40Speaker 2: oh no, you've got great insulation. You just need to
- 6:43Speaker 2: spray foam your rim choices. Now I'm gonna quiz you, shan. Okay,
- 6:47Speaker 2: where was the home bringing in the new air from.
- 6:51Speaker 1: The basement where the where the walls meet the basement foundation.
- 6:57Speaker 2: No, because they were already air sealed.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Oh oh wait, I don't know the No, they were
- 7:05Speaker 3: bringing the air in from the windows on the main level.
- 7:10Speaker 2: So basically what happened? You failed, but you know we'll
- 7:14Speaker 2: get you there. Yeah. Basically, so because we air sealed
- 7:18Speaker 2: up the rim joices somebody did, your home has to
- 7:22Speaker 2: bring in air from somewhere because through stack effect, we're
- 7:24Speaker 2: losing all that hot air because we never treated the
- 7:27Speaker 2: attic properly. So what it can actually do? Then, Okay,
- 7:31Speaker 2: we're trying to seal off those rim choices in the
- 7:34Speaker 2: basement to make our home more comfortable. We're gonna second
- 7:36Speaker 2: suck in less cold air. But what we actually did
- 7:39Speaker 2: was we made our home more uncomfortable because instead of
- 7:41Speaker 2: it bringing it in from the basement, and now that
- 7:44Speaker 2: air has a little bit of a chance to warm
- 7:45Speaker 2: up before it gets to us on the main level. No,
- 7:48Speaker 2: it's coming in more on the main level because the
- 7:50Speaker 2: home has to bring air in. So what happened is
- 7:52Speaker 2: it made perfectly fine windows feel leakier and not as good.
- 7:58Speaker 2: So we said, here, here's what we have to do.
- 8:00Speaker 2: We have to treat your attic. Don't replace because they
- 8:04Speaker 2: were ready to literally replace all their windows, and we're
- 8:07Speaker 2: talking thirty forty thousand dollars. Let us air seal your
- 8:12Speaker 2: attic and let us know how it feels. It changed
- 8:15Speaker 2: everything because now we're not bringing in air through those
- 8:19Speaker 2: rim joices because they've already been air sealed in the
- 8:22Speaker 2: wrong order. But whoever did it did a good job.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Now we air seal the attic, so we don't stop
- 8:28Speaker 2: stack effect, but we slow it drastically, so now the
- 8:32Speaker 2: home is still sucking in air from different spots, but
- 8:35Speaker 2: it's not as drastic and you can't feel it. So
- 8:37Speaker 2: we made their home more efficient and much more comfortable,
- 8:42Speaker 2: and they didn't have to replace windows because there was
- 8:45Speaker 2: actually nothing wrong with their windows. So while WebMD might
- 8:50Speaker 2: have its place, we need to come out and diagnose things. Yes,
- 8:56Speaker 2: you know, one of my reps guy met him at
- 8:58Speaker 2: the door yesterday and said, I need insulation, and if
- 9:01Speaker 2: you can't do it for less than fifteen hundred dollars,
- 9:02Speaker 2: you might as well get back in your car and leave.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Well it's easy, though, Oh okay, we're going to leave now.
- 9:07Speaker 2: That's unfortunate because sir, you're going to spend fifteen hundred
- 9:11Speaker 2: dollars and it's not going to fix anything. So we
- 9:15Speaker 2: have to do it properly because if we look, we've
- 9:18Speaker 2: made people's windows leakier before, we've treated a basement without
- 9:23Speaker 2: treating an attic when we were much less knowledgeable. Now
- 9:27Speaker 2: that homeowner ended up getting more work done for free,
- 9:30Speaker 2: because that's just our guarantee, Like we're not we did
- 9:33Speaker 2: it wrong, We're going to take care of it. But
- 9:35Speaker 2: we know that we have to treat everything at once.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And you might think you need more insulation, but we
- 9:41Speaker 2: have to come out and inspect and see what's really
- 9:43Speaker 2: going on. We've had people think they needed a more
- 9:47Speaker 2: insulation when they really needed a new air conditioner. Or
- 9:52Speaker 2: we've had people say that they think they need a
- 9:54Speaker 2: new air conditioner when really what they needed to do
- 9:57Speaker 2: was insulate their air ducts. That we're all running through
- 9:59Speaker 2: the attic, so different situations, different fixes for everything. And
- 10:04Speaker 2: we really pride ourselves on the knowledge we have when
- 10:07Speaker 2: it comes to home performance. We train on everything we do,
- 10:10Speaker 2: but there's nothing that we have to be as expert
- 10:13Speaker 2: on as home performance work. The way your home heats,
- 10:17Speaker 2: cools and breathes.
- 10:18Speaker 1: What I think, and I think an aspect of what
- 10:21Speaker 1: you guys do at Larsenom Services that I don't think
- 10:23Speaker 1: we've talked enough about but it does come up in
- 10:25Speaker 1: conversation is I sometimes feel like the folks they work
- 10:29Speaker 1: with you and work for you at Larstom Services. They're
- 10:32Speaker 1: lucky because they get to solve problems. They get to
- 10:35Speaker 1: see a puzzle and they get to really fix that stuff.
- 10:38Speaker 1: But that's not just done by happenstance. That's not just
- 10:40Speaker 1: done through luck. It's done through training, through education, through experience.
- 10:44Speaker 1: And that's the great thing when we talk with Andrew
- 10:45Speaker 1: Larson from larst Home Services. They've got the hours, they've
- 10:48Speaker 1: got the classroom hours, they've got the field hours, they've
- 10:50Speaker 1: got the understanding of your home. It's performance. They know
- 10:53Speaker 1: how to do the things right, whether it's gutters, roofing,
- 10:56Speaker 1: or making sure that your house is sealed up properly.
