- Lucas: If you've been stepping into history with us episode by episode, you know we’ve spent a lot of time looking at the glittering side of Timur’s reign—the libraries, the chess games, the diplomatic gifts. But today, we need to turn the page to the darker, more visceral reality of how he actually built that empire. Luna: The blood behind the gold, right? Lucas: Exactly. We’re talking about the invasion of India in 1398, specifically the siege of Delhi. Most people think of Timur as a sophisticated ruler who wanted to restore the Mongol legacy through culture, but his campaign against the Tughlaq dynasty was defined by sheer, calculated terror. Lucas: By late 1398, Timur had crossed the Indus River and was approaching Delhi. The Sultan, Mahmud Shah Tughlaq, was weak and unpopular, having just survived a coup led by his own uncle, Malik Kafur. But Timur wasn’t there to negotiate or install a puppet immediately; he was there to crush. Luna: So the city was already unstable when he arrived? Lucas: Deeply so. And Timur knew it. According to the chronicler Ibn Arabshah, who wrote shortly after the events, Timur didn't just attack the walls. He attacked the will to resist before a single arrow was loosed. He did this by doing something that shocked even other conquerors of the era. Luna: What did he do? Lucas: He captured thousands of Indian prisoners—farmers, merchants, whatever villagers were near the army's path—and forced them to march ahead of his cavalry. He used them as human shields to soften up the city's defenses and break the morale of the defenders. Lucas: It wasn't just a tactic; it was a message. He wanted the people inside Delhi to see what happened to those who opposed him. It’s a grim detail that often gets glossed over when we talk about his architectural achievements. Luna: That is horrifying to imagine. Lucas: It really is. And the sources say it worked. When the Timurid archers started firing on the crowds of captives, the defenders inside the city realized that their own population was being sacrificed. Some accounts suggest that the gates were opened not by force, but because the garrison simply couldn't bear to watch anymore. Luna: So they surrendered quickly? Lucas: They surrendered, but Timur didn't just take the city. He ordered a massacre that lasted for days. The poet and historian Sharaf al-Din Ali Yazdi records that the streets ran with blood, and the number of casualties was staggering. We're talking about tens of thousands of people killed in a single urban center. Luna: Was that standard practice for Mongol commanders? Lucas: Well, Timur liked to claim he was following the Yassa, the legal code of Genghis Khan, which allowed for extreme violence if a city resisted. But Delhi offered little real resistance after the initial shock. So this level of slaughter was arguably punitive rather than tactical. Lucas: He also ordered the construction of towers made of the heads of the slain. This was a psychological weapon meant to terrify any future enemies. It’s the kind of thing that makes modern historians uncomfortable, but it’s well-documented in both Persian and Spanish sources like Ruy González de Clavijo. Luna: Those towers must have been a nightmare to walk past. Lucas: Absolutely. And then came the looting. Timur stripped Delhi of its wealth. The markets were emptied, the artisans were taken captive to Samarkand, and the treasury was loaded onto camels. It was an economic decapitation of the region. Lucas: This is where our support comes in. We deliberately don't run ads on these shows because we want to keep the focus on the history, not the sponsors. If you want to support that choice, the link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Thanks for keeping this ad-free space alive. Lucas: It means a lot. Anyway, back to Delhi. After the loot was secured, Timur didn't stay long. He turned north, leaving a power vacuum that would eventually help the Mughals rise a century later. Lucas: But the immediate effect was catastrophic for the Tughlaq dynasty. Mahmud Shah fled, and Malik Kafur tried to hold on, but the prestige of the Sultan was gone. Timur had shown that no wall could stop him, and no loyalty could save you. Luna: Did the people ever forgive him? Lucas: Forgiveness is too strong a word. But fear is a powerful adhesive. For a while, the regions under Timurid control stayed quiet. His reputation preceded him. Even distant kingdoms sent envoys with gifts, terrified that they might be next on the list. Lucas: There’s a fascinating letter from the Chinese Ming Emperor Yongle to Timur, pleading for peace. Timur replied with a mix of arrogance and genuine respect for China’s size, saying he wouldn’t invade yet, but implying he could if he chose to. Luna: He really was playing the geopolitical long game. Lucas: He was. And that’s the duality of Sahib-i Qiran, the Lord of the Auspicious Conjunction. On one hand, he was a patron of arts and sciences in Samarkand. On the other, he was a butcher in Delhi. Both sides are true. Lucas: The Zafarnama, his book of victories, tries to justify these actions as divine punishment for unjust rulers. But most historians today see it as pure propaganda designed to legitimize his rule over a diverse and often rebellious population. Luna: It sounds like he needed every bit of justification he could get. Lucas: Probably. Because his legitimacy was always shaky. He wasn’t a Chagatai Khan by blood; he was a Barlas emir. He married into the Genghisid line to get the title, but he never ruled in his own right—he ruled through puppets. Lucas: So he had to constantly prove his worth through victory. The sack of Delhi was one of his greatest victories, and it cemented his status as the heir to the Mongol Empire in the eyes of Central Asia. Luna: Did he regret the brutality later? Lucas: We don’t have evidence of regret. If anything, he seemed proud of it. In his memoirs, dictated to scribes, he talks about his campaigns with a sense of destiny. He believed he was the scourge of God, sent to punish sinners. Lucas: Whether those sinners were the Delhi Sultans or random villagers doesn’t seem to have mattered to him. It was all part of the grand design. Luna: A very heavy burden of belief. Lucas: It was. And it shaped the empire he left behind. His grandson Ulugh Beg would become a famous astronomer, trying to build a legacy of knowledge. But the foundation was laid in blood. Lucas: The Gur-i Amir mausoleum, where Timur is buried, is beautiful. But standing in front of it, you can’t help but think of the towers of skulls in Delhi. Luna: That contrast is haunting. Lucas: It is. History isn’t just dates and battles; it’s the human cost behind the monuments. Timur wanted to be remembered as a great conqueror, and he succeeded. But the cost was measured in lives. Lucas: As we move forward, we’ll see how his descendants struggled to hold that empire together. The military machine worked as long as he was leading it, but without him, the cracks began to show. Luna: So the legacy was fragile? Lucas: Extremely. But that fragility allowed new powers to rise, including the Mughals, who would inherit his ambition but try to soften his image. It’s a complex chain of cause and effect that starts right there in 1398. Lucas: For now, let’s leave Delhi in the dust of history and prepare for the next chapter of this story. Luna: I’m ready for whatever comes next. Lucas: Good. Because the road to Samarkand is long, and there are many more secrets to uncover.
