Transcript
- 0:36Hey everybody, welcome to another exciting episode of Citizen Frame,
- 0:39episode two of Christmas Month.
- 0:41I got some news. We got some changes to Christmas Month.
- 0:45Trevor is not talking to me right now because I have decided,
- 0:50I'll pause after I say this to let this sink in.
- 0:54We had decided to drop the Hallmark Christmas movie this month. It's outrageous.
- 1:01Yeah. It's a disgrace. Trevor said he wants, he's leaving the podcast.
- 1:06Because of it. Yeah, I've had enough.
- 1:08He says, I love movie magic so much, and there's so much of that movie magic
- 1:13in a Christmas car. Christmas train, whatever the fuck it was called.
- 1:17Train wreck? Danny Glover in his prime.
- 1:22How the mighty have fallen? Danny Glover.
- 1:26I always get confused. Donald Glover now. Isn't there a Donald Glover?
- 1:30Danny Glover, you know what I mean? At his peak, he was a lethal weapon. Predator 2.
- 1:35And now he doing hallmark films i suppose they all do they're all jobbing actors
- 1:39and yeah yeah i mean they get through certain things and that's no disrespect
- 1:42to our boy but yeah we decided to pull it because,
- 1:46we find as we record we got
- 1:49it we got to hit more of the commercial stuff even though
- 1:52we don't want to especially this new title we replaced
- 1:55it with that we we added in place of a
- 1:58hallmark christmas movie so we're doing
- 2:01part one that's right we've added wicked
- 2:04this is gonna be
- 2:07and anyone this is our podcast you know
- 2:10we're gonna hate it but that make that probably makes it fun and saying that
- 2:15i mean from what i have read up apparently it is for what it is it is well done
- 2:24but we'll get to I haven't watched it yet and although we've been up with the target audience.
- 2:32You've watched them both. I haven't. You love it. You just said it.
- 2:37You love it. I haven't seen them.
- 2:39What you just said was one of your masterpieces. I will keep an open mind.
- 2:42That's all I'd say. Fuck. I'd give it a chance. Yeah.
- 2:47So we're still doing Next Top is Home Alone. Then we got the bad Christmas movie,
- 2:52which is Deck the Halls, which is worse than Christmas with the Cranks,
- 2:55by the way. And that's the truth.
- 2:58And then we'll end the year
- 3:01with the big blockbuster wicked and then we'll
- 3:03come into wicked two in the new year so there
- 3:06you go there's our lineup and yeah should
- 3:10be fun we could even do a wizard of oz month the original
- 3:13classic um along with likes of return
- 3:16to us the sam raimi one who knows watch this
- 3:19space yeah yeah yeah yeah you never
- 3:22know but on that note we are
- 3:25talking today the remake of the 1984 horror
- 3:29film silent night deadly night this is
- 3:32getting pretty good reviews after giving it a weekend and uh doing pretty didn't
- 3:37do well box office because no one really knows about it kind of a quiet release
- 3:40which is fine i don't think it costs much money to make but so i thought about
- 3:45this one and we talk about remakes here all the time now i'm not looking at
- 3:51this is challenging a remake.
- 3:53Silent Night, Deadly Night, you can remake. It's not a good movie.
- 3:56I mean, it's entertaining for what it offers, but at the end of the day,
- 4:02there's a reason why the director went on to direct,
- 4:05Christian films. He's actually a documentarian of Jesus and so forth.
- 4:09His repentance? Night and day.
- 4:13But Jesus was going to punish him if he didn't turn a leaf after making Silent Night, Deadly Night.
- 4:20Quick review. I thought it was a good, I mean, I thought it was competent,
- 4:23especially with the special effects.
- 4:25And I do like the PTSD aspect of it, which was a darker, kind of a darker tone
- 4:30for kind of a comedic film.
- 4:32However, I felt the acting was terrible. The pacing was all over the place.
- 4:36The nudity and the rape scene with the mother a little too much.
- 4:40So I could take it or leave it. So this being remade, go for it.
- 4:45What about the second one? You don't work away.
- 4:47But second there. And then so, but I always say with the remake,
- 4:51you do it, make it your own.
- 4:53Keep, yeah, pretty true to the original source, but make it your own.
- 4:57This one does it quite competently, but we'll see how well it does.
- 5:00I'm not going to compare apples to oranges because, like I said,
- 5:03one is CC movie back in the 80s. This is more of a B grade.
- 5:08But I will certainly – some of the key differences work. Some of them don't.
- 5:14There's a funny thing. The big selling point for Silent Night,
- 5:18Daily Night for me, the original, was the aspect of the PTSD.
- 5:21A little boy being traumatized, then being thrown into a foster care with abusive
- 5:26nuns, and not really being given the proper care that a child would need to
- 5:31deal with seeing such violence.
- 5:34And that was a plus for the film. In fact, a little funny fact,
- 5:38the woman who played Mother Superior.
- 5:41Lillian Chauvin, she made a comment during the chaos when Silent Night was going
- 5:45to be banned by all these assholes who never saw the film and just prejudged it. She said...
- 5:51It's fault of the marketing team that did that because she felt actually the
- 5:57story should have been promoted around the psychological look of Billy and the
- 6:02journey that this child takes and how he becomes what he does become.
- 6:07That's what they said the marketing team should have focused on rather than
- 6:11a killer Santa because they would have given a little gravitas to the makers of the film.
- 6:16And I can kind of see that actually. I would agree
- 6:20with her in many terms basically while
- 6:24the original which I love by the way and I am
- 6:26a fan of it while it is certainly batshit and over
- 6:30the top at times there is that tragic sort of underlying sort of main theme
- 6:36and story about Billy and you know the abuse that he's suffered over the years
- 6:40and stuff yes it goes off the rails and stuff but you know at the same time, it was the 80s, man.
- 6:48You know? You gotta get away. You gotta stop. You gotta get away from that.
- 6:51Makes no sense. No, no, no.
- 6:52I'm sort of joking, but at the same time, you know, it is it's a good story,
- 6:57and it's a lot, I think it's a lot more layered and clever than it gets credit for.
- 7:03Although I would say probably the sequels didn't do it any good,
- 7:08you know, its reputation.
- 7:10But I think it stands up well enough. I think, I mean, it's not a crap film,
- 7:14I'll say that, but I think you need to reverse that.
- 7:18I think you're seeing more than it's actually given.
- 7:21Because if that was the case, this guy would be working,
- 7:24more mainstream. If people saw them, you know, I don't think we're grasping at straws, as they say.
- 7:31I don't think it's the greatest film ever made, but what I'm saying is it's
- 7:35a lot better than it was made out at the time,
- 7:38and certainly throughout the years, and I think there is some serious stuff
- 7:43there alongside the more chaotic.
- 7:47Batshit Santa murdering with an axe stuff, but I enjoy it.
- 7:52But it's a film that can be remade. It's not jaws okay so but it people think
- 7:58there was a remake the 2012 version called silent night that was not a remake
- 8:03of silent night deadly night at all there's no besides a killer santa it has no there is no at all,
- 8:12No parallels. It was made by the guy who made the recent War Wolves that we reviewed.
- 8:17Yeah. It's actually pretty good, guys. You want some violent and gore? Oh, it's brutal.
- 8:22And Donald Logue's in it. He's very funny. I like Donald Logue. Yeah.
- 8:25So check it out. It's very good. They have a little nod to it.
- 8:29They mentioned Garbage Day and stuff like that.
- 8:31But it's its own film. It's not a remake at all.
- 8:34The one we're about to talk about is, this is directed by Mike P. Nelson.
- 8:39You know what? He's got some good street cred so far. Wrong Turn.
- 8:43Wrong Turn reboot, which I thought was pretty good. VHS franchise,
- 8:47which is obviously a nice little franchise in Shudder. And he did a film called The Domestics.
- 8:51A little hidden gem. You guys should check it out. It's pretty good. With Kate Bosworth.
- 8:57It's pretty good. Check it out. So the guy's got some good credit there.
- 9:05Now, what this film does, and this is where I'm teetering on some of the negatives.
- 9:10It plays it dead straight. Okay? So let's remove the laughs.
- 9:14However, there's some sequences that I wanted to laugh at, but was I supposed to?
- 9:18And that's the problem kind of when they're trying, when you're trying to do
- 9:24a happy medium when the original was just batshit crazy.
- 9:27This one plays it straight, but at some point I couldn't tell if it was trying
- 9:32to wink at the audience or not.
- 9:33Yeah, there are certain sequences that
- 9:36it feels like they're trying to be more comedic and
- 9:39over the top comedic but they're just a bit random it's almost like this is
- 9:44competently directed this remake but certainly when it's generally played dead
- 9:51straight but at times it's almost as if yes they can't direct yes they can't
- 9:56play it straight but when it comes to the more comedic stuff,
- 10:00Doesn't work? Yeah. Yeah. We'll definitely dive into what those scenes are.
- 10:04Now, we just saw this film fresh, and I always like to see a movie twice.
- 10:07So all I really could do is went to see it in theater, and then I kind of marinated
- 10:10it for a couple days to kind of give it my final verdict, because I don't think
- 10:14that's fair if we're going to tear something apart or give it a review without,
- 10:18you know, I just didn't want to do it right away.
- 10:22So, but let's dive into it. All right. We got our leads, Billy,
- 10:27or I like to know him as Corey from Halloween Ends.
- 10:30It's pretty much the same character yeah yeah
- 10:33basically we got pamela we got
- 10:36charlie who's the voice in in billy's head yes we'll
- 10:39dig deeper into that one we got dean sims who
- 10:43i like played by david brown he is the the father of uh pamela the shopkeeper
- 10:48yeah we got max the cop terrible red herring not a red herring just terrible
- 10:52plot device we got the snatcher we got george and we I got Daphne, who was the Nazi mom,
- 10:59who was actually quite funny. But,
- 11:03What really works for the film is the opening sequence. It's one of the best
- 11:06shots of the film. It is pretty much the same similar sequence that we got from the original one.
- 11:12Young Billy's there with his parents to see the grandfather.
- 11:15Now, before we get any further, I know you guys all know this.
- 11:19This is spoiler-filled.
- 11:21And the one thing this film does, and it's kind of fun, some of it works,
- 11:24some of it doesn't, it has a lot of misdirects.
- 11:27And some of it, like I said, some works, some fall flat, but it's nice to see that in a slasher.
- 11:34And some, I would say, are totally obvious. Yes. Oh, yeah. Yep. The ones that fall flat.
- 11:41So there you go. If you haven't seen it, it'll probably be on demand in a week
- 11:45or so. All right. If not already.
- 11:48So we meet the parents. It's the same opening. He goes to meet his grandfather.
- 11:53And the grandfather dies while he's talking to him. And we get a glimpse of his janitor.
- 12:00He's kind of the red herring there. kind of looking a lot creepy and,
- 12:04Pedophile-ish. Yep. And as they're going home, they're obviously ambushed like
- 12:09the original, and the parents are both killed.
- 12:12But how they tell the story is it's in bits.
- 12:15So Billy will wake up, and it's a nightmare. So we don't know the whole story
- 12:20of this killer Santa that killed his family until the end or near the end. And it's quite fun.
- 12:27Pretty much, I'm going to go ahead and tell you what it is, just for the review's sake.
- 12:32It's what they decided to do. They took away the rape scene, which is one of Lydia.
- 12:38And what they've decided to do was they get ambushed.
- 12:43This is deliberate attack by the janitor, who is the one who kills both the parents.
- 12:50And as he's killing them, the mother gets a shot off with one of her high-heeled
- 12:55stilettos into his neck.
- 12:57And as he's dying, Billy walks up to him. He's in a Santa suit. and he grabs his hand.
- 13:02This is where it's double-edged sword with me because I like the idea.
- 13:09I just don't like the execution.
- 13:11And so long story short, he holds hands with the janitor as he's dying and his soul...
- 13:20Or his essence goes into Billy. And now Billy has his voice in his head,
- 13:25which is Charlie, who's pretty much going to be his narrator.
- 13:29It's basically a supernatural element that is not in the original at all.
- 13:35It's basically this sort of evil Santa consciousness is transferred from killer
- 13:42to killer. You know, it's like passed down.
- 13:44So the janitor guy, he's basically the original Santa killer.
- 13:48And he as he's done he passes it on
- 13:51to young billy here's but here's the
- 13:54plus part okay there's a twist in this
- 13:57and we don't get this near to the end and so
- 14:00what it is is this janitor sees a lot of ugliness at christmas time and what
- 14:06has happened we find out that the grandfather has signed all the stuff away
- 14:11to his son but it's the parents that actually killed the grandfather they poisoned
- 14:16him with too much medication or something like that.
- 14:18For the money. For the money. And the janitor sees that and that's why the janitor
- 14:22tricks. He's a vigilante.
- 14:24Yeah, it's like a sort of avenging angel type thing.
- 14:27Yeah, and I'm going with that. And he passes on that power, I guess you could
- 14:32say, or that career path.
- 14:36Yeah, it's basically the killer Santa in this version, whoever it may be,
- 14:43only kills people who are bastards undeserving.
- 14:47And it is a fun idea.
- 14:51And it's a smart idea for modern audiences because you're kind of taking away
- 14:56just killing people for the sake of killing people.
- 14:58But if I'm not mistaken, in the original he only kills people that kind of deserve it.
- 15:04Pretty much. So, yeah. They got the Vince. And what they do is he only kills
- 15:08during Christmas, the first 25 days.
- 15:10And he uses an advent calendar with blood. I don't know if it's,
- 15:14I think it's their blood. And he puts his thumbprint.
- 15:16Yeah. Every time he opens up a little window of the advent calendar.
- 15:20And then he only kills for that for 25 days. But it's got to be 25 people.
- 15:27So he's got to be true. It's like a dark twist on the 12 days of Christmas.
- 15:32It's like his killing spree for Christmas. you know.
- 15:35So when he wakes up at a hotel room, he falls asleep. We find out he killed somebody.
- 15:43All right. Yeah. We, at this point, think it's just a random killing.
- 15:46We don't know that he's a good guy technically.
- 15:49So, but this is where I'm saying where there's companies beyond the lens.
- 15:54And I know it's a simple shot, but the cops are going to his hotel room where his dead body is.
- 16:01And he's got to sneak out of there and get out of there before the cops show.
- 16:04So as the cops come around the corner, we see Billy climbing up this TV antenna
- 16:09or whatever it is. Over the roof, yeah.
- 16:11Over the roof, exactly. And it's all timing.
- 16:13But it's a nice shot. I see him come from the side of the hotel,
- 16:16and they see Billy's body just quickly disappearing on the other side of the
- 16:21roof to escape. And this is Max. I believe Max is.
- 16:25I do think it's funny. You got Max, who's a cop here, and it's a small town.
- 16:30And there's a thing going on currently not with Billy, but there's a kidnapping of kids going on.
- 16:35He's called the Snatcher. Yet there's no FBI here.
- 16:40Where's the press as well? The press is just swarming this town.
- 16:44However, you could say the same about weapons. I know it's a different film
- 16:48but that is something that has been brought up about weapons.
- 16:51If 17 children went missing, all just like randomly and magically together war
- 16:56was the, well I think the FBI I wore them weapons, but there was no press? No, they weren't.
- 17:01And they do fix out, one-line fix. I watched the movie again.
- 17:07What's the one-line fix? The kid, you know the little kid who narrates it? Yes, yes, the guard.
- 17:11Yeah, at the end, when she re-narrates, she comes back and narrates. She says...
- 17:17The police never reported their child was missing because, I can't remember
- 17:21what she says, but she does say.
- 17:23Oh, it wouldn't look bad on them type thing? Yeah, they kept it to themselves.
- 17:27Yeah, they're covered up. Yes, I think you're right. Yes, it was covered up.
- 17:30But here, yeah, with these, I mean, it's the same, similar thing,
- 17:34where basically all these kids have been snatched.
- 17:36But like you say, no FBI and no press. It's just like basically a ghost town.
- 17:43It's funny. It's such a small town. I know that's for budgetary reasons.
- 17:46And so is the original town. at night but he's gonna
- 17:49start killing these people and it's like well i guess in all fairness they don't
- 17:52find the bodies right away but yeah do
- 17:55like how i do like the fact when we're told that it's that he's only like little
- 18:01things like okay we meet the first guy george he seems like a nice guy the guy
- 18:06that comes into the store yeah where he gets what he's got the job but yeah
- 18:09yeah and he's kind of handsy with Pamela.
- 18:12Yep. But the dean, the father says, no, he's a good guy.
- 18:17He's just a bit lonely, they say. Yeah. But Charlie, his inner voice tells him he's not.
- 18:23You need to kill him. And he goes to his house and says, guys,
- 18:26the death's hurt, right? They don't hold back with a gore.
- 18:30Yeah, they don't hold back. And obviously his main weapon is the axe.
- 18:33And he just smacks it in the top of his head. But then we find out during a
- 18:38visit when the daughter goes to visit George and the smell of his body that what's that smell?
- 18:43We find out that he actually killed his wife.
- 18:46Yeah. He had her buried under the floorboards type thing. Yeah,
- 18:49exactly. So we didn't know that right away. We didn't know he wasn't killing...
- 18:54Bad guys yet we just knew that he was on a
- 18:57killing spree so when you find out george and then we
- 18:59see that we meet the nazi mother it was quite funny then
- 19:03so we start realizing there's a pattern here the only
- 19:06problem i had with it was i know we're not going to get it
- 19:09as well it may be nitpicking but you got this voice charlie
- 19:12was great voice the guy who uh
- 19:15played the played the voice but I
- 19:19wanted more Columbo and what
- 19:22I mean by that I wanted Billy to do the investigating and we're finding out
- 19:26how he finds out George killed his wife and you know rather than it being spoon
- 19:31fed by Charlie I think that's kind of a cheat yeah I would say that there are
- 19:36some very good ideas on display here including you know.
- 19:42Potentially the mystery of the town and the snatcher and who's behind it and
- 19:46all this here sort of thing and Billy being basically the punisher, the avenging angel.
- 19:51But within the hour and a half run time, they're just not given enough time
- 19:55to breathe or to be properly explored.
- 19:58I think there should have been maybe focused maybe on just one thing overall,
- 20:05you know, instead of a lot of good ideas that aren't given the chance to breathe
- 20:09or aren't fully realized with the end result.
- 20:13Yeah, it makes you wonder if there's going to be another cut out there.
- 20:17But again, that happens a lot, especially with horror films.
- 20:21They're giving a 90, 95-minute run, and that's it.
- 20:25Maybe the original cut, I mean, obviously the original cut will be a lot longer.
- 20:29So it would be interesting to see what was left on the cutting room floor.
- 20:33But it does feel quite, for the story it's trying to tell and the different
- 20:37aspects of the story, it does feel quite roused.
- 20:43And almost as if there's a lot of good ideas just thrown together into a mix, into a blender?
- 20:49Yeah, I mean, I get what you're saying. I think they're biting off more than
- 20:53they can chew, in other words.
- 20:54So if you're making a film that has all these really clever twists and turns,
- 20:58you've got to give us a little, you've got to expand this a little more.
- 21:01In order to do that, you need a bigger runtime.
- 21:03So I don't think they really, they could have pulled certain things out of there,
- 21:07even one of the deaths. What they were trying to do, about two hours.
- 21:12I think, well, I wouldn't even go that far. I think, believe it or not,
- 21:16one of the most talked about scenes in the movie could have been cut.
- 21:18The Nazi scene? The Nazi scene. It's very random.
- 21:22Yeah, see, what I said in the beginning- And the tone is all over the place.
- 21:25What I said in the beginning of the podcast, because this is a serious take, and it is, I wasn't sure.
- 21:31This was obviously, the Nazi thing was comedic, but it didn't feel like, it felt out of place.
- 21:36I would have expected that from the original Silent Night, because that was
- 21:39a comedy. We knew that was winking at the audience.
- 21:41This is, there's a sequence where we meet the Nazi mom at the hockey game,
- 21:45and this is where we meet Pamela. We know Pamela has kind of a violent temper.
- 21:49By the way, the most horrible, try to be misdirectful or red herring or whatever
- 21:56you want to title it as, is the Pamela character.
- 22:00We knew she was going to become an as accomplished. Well, also Max, the cop.
- 22:05And Max, I know, not as a snatcher. That one I didn't see.
- 22:09No, but yeah, I mean, it was pretty obvious he was a Roland,
- 22:12you know? Yeah, yeah. But-
- 22:15We're throwing a lot at you guys. So just, you got to see it to understand what
- 22:19we're talking about, really. And that's the problem with new releases.
- 22:23But we see Pamela and her, we see her kid being kind of bullied on the ice rink
- 22:29as we're watching a hockey match.
- 22:31And she goes out there and beats the shit out of these kids.
- 22:36And she gets arrested, but the parents drop the charges, which I actually like that line.
- 22:40Parents drop the charges because if their kids were doing that to your kid,
- 22:43they deserve what they got.
- 22:45And so I did like that line but we're supposed
- 22:48to see her violent temper and she's beating the crap out of a kid with a stocky
- 22:52stick and I'm like am I supposed to be laughing at this or you know what I mean
- 22:56and then there's lines where they use naughty and garbage day and punish but
- 23:02they're played dead straight yeah it doesn't those callbacks you know with the dialogue,
- 23:07don't work it's like I get what they're
- 23:10there for you know their callbacks to the originals stuff but they're not funny
- 23:15you know as those original lines are the naughty and the punny actually I think
- 23:22work a little bit better in this film than the garbage day one but here where
- 23:27they're played dead straight they are more sinister.
- 23:30That kind of works. But later on, when the guy in the kitchen says it's garbage
- 23:36day, garbage day is an iconic bad line from the sequel.
- 23:43And here it's just like thrown in just for the sake of it. It just doesn't work. Yeah.
- 23:49And those are things that don't work, especially since you're playing a dead
- 23:52straight, there's not much you can do with it.
- 23:54And they should just cut it out. because the Nazi scene is very basically yeah
- 24:00there's no real apart from we see the Nazi mom being a dick at the hockey match
- 24:06there's no real lead up to it all of a sudden he's in a bar and there's these
- 24:10people in comedy Nazi outfits,
- 24:14and you know so whenever they do get it there's no real payoff for the audience
- 24:18apart from the Nazi mom but with all the other ones we've never really we haven't
- 24:25spent any time with them so there's no real payoff when they do get it,
- 24:28just appears very random and thrown into the mix yeah it's a Nazi Christmas
- 24:33party he thinks he's just following her wherever she's going and track her down
- 24:39and kill her because he's,
- 24:40at this point she's just a mean mom.
- 24:44And very abrasive and very abusive so that's why he's going after her,
- 24:49he doesn't know she's Nazi so he walks into this you know it's supposed to be
- 24:53these fish out of water sequence.
- 24:54You know how those movies where the couple goes into a bar and the music stops
- 24:59and everyone turns. American Werewolf in London?
- 25:01Yeah, or it's like a biker bar or something. Well, this is the same concept,
- 25:04but he's coming in there to take her out and then he sees a bunch of Nazis celebrating Christmas.
- 25:10Could be funny, but the movie wasn't played for funny, so it doesn't work.
- 25:14Yeah, it's very random. And they're playing this crystal song as he's slaughtering
- 25:18all these people with an axe and he's supposed to go, ha ha ha.
- 25:21I was like, no, it kind of doesn't work.
- 25:23I would have remove that entire sequence, focus on going after her, and then,
- 25:28that fucking 10 minute sequence we just had of killing Nazis would have been
- 25:32better, giving us a little more character development or even a little more
- 25:36investigation to how he's catching these people rather than Charlie just going, Oh, go there.
- 25:41It's a massive tonal shift just all of a sudden.
- 25:44And again, as I was saying, there's no real payoff either because we don't know
- 25:48the, they're just like random people.
- 25:50It's a body count. Nazi outfits. It's a body count. Yeah.
- 25:54Well, he definitely got us 25 kills in.
- 25:58You know, for the month. But yeah, then they get that... She gets that cheap
- 26:02beheading, which is pretty much an homage to the original one.
- 26:06Where she... I was... It's David's... Yeah, it's David's sled.
- 26:09She's in a snowmobile. Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:13You're deaf, though. Yeah, but I... You know what's funny?
- 26:16It would have been better if he follows her, she goes in, and she goes in and
- 26:22gets in her snowmobile, and then he disappears, and she's driving along,
- 26:26and then whack. The audience doesn't see it coming.
- 26:28Then he whacks her head off. That would have been better, and that would have
- 26:31been a little bit comedic because we didn't see it coming.
- 26:34I don't know. Going into this, I didn't know they were going to be playing it
- 26:38so straight for the most part, so I personally was expecting and pretty much
- 26:44hoping for it to be all tongue-in-cheek basically a horror comedy,
- 26:49so it was a little jarring for me whenever it was playing it
- 26:52dead straight but it does open well and i sort of
- 26:54was running with it then all of a sudden there's this random sort
- 26:58of scene that's played for laughs and the deaths aren't
- 27:01even that good i mean the goers good but they're
- 27:04not that sort of imaginative or creative and
- 27:08then you know other sort of jokes as we mentioned you know
- 27:10the garbage day one and stuff falls flat so i
- 27:13think they should have i mean if they're gonna if they're gonna play it straight
- 27:17go with actual fucking i don't know neo-nazis or something in the bar who would
- 27:22be skinheads wouldn't be wearing things like you know basically comedy ss outfits
- 27:27nazi uniforms and stuff that was just a bit it's just very out of left field yeah i mean but it does,
- 27:34it's the one scene they could have removed but again for a film that's a remake
- 27:38of saturday night Deadly Night, I'm going with it.
- 27:40And I'll tell you what, it's definitely a fun film.
- 27:44And especially what they do instead of having nuns were told the story after
- 27:52his parents are killed by Charlie.
- 27:57We are finally seeing the whole flashback. Yes.
- 28:01And we find out that he was raised in a foster care by this vile woman.
- 28:06And the flashback of how she treats these kids is wonderful.
- 28:09She's a brutal film. And what's nice about it, it's not the whole film like
- 28:13we had for Silent Night, where it's all nuns and we have to go through all this massive data dump.
- 28:17They tell it within like a 10-minute window, a flashback of him as young Billy
- 28:22being treated by this foster mother.
- 28:23And it's quite well done. and it wasn't elongated we got oh here we go well
- 28:30her death is very much an homage to the Linnea Quigley death in the original
- 28:36yeah I mean the fight scene.
- 28:38Is really fun because it's his first kill and he doesn't know how to do it and
- 28:44she's kicking his ass and he's kicking her ass and he pretty much gets lucky
- 28:48by getting her on the antlers,
- 28:50I think that's actually overall I think that's actually the best homage to the original in this?
- 28:57Yeah, because the great thing about it, yay, you kind of tackled the nuns,
- 29:00you know, backstory, you know, the abusive nuns, but you just flipped it with
- 29:04an abusive foster parent.
- 29:06And then you also put in the famous death, the antlers in there. Yes.
- 29:10Probably the most despicable character in the film, which is the foster parent.
- 29:13So it works. There's also a scene which is trying to pay homage to the scene
- 29:18in the original where Billy, well, the audience doesn't know whether Billy's
- 29:22going to kill a child or not.
- 29:23And they have it here, but sadly, they don't
- 29:26pull it off either you know where basically billy
- 29:29and this remake becomes the the shop santa
- 29:33and he has you know the little girl on his knee and stuff
- 29:36and it just doesn't have the tension that that scene
- 29:39in the original does or the scene that it's paying homage to in
- 29:42the original i think what ruins that moment i
- 29:45can see your point there but i think what what ruins that
- 29:48moment it's not necessarily the actor or no
- 29:51it's not the acting it's or the way it's shot i think
- 29:54is the voice the voice wouldn't shut the fuck up we
- 29:57don't need as an audience we don't need the voice for
- 30:00this we would understand that he's the movie
- 30:03would have been better if you removed the voice not not completely because i
- 30:07do kind of like it but it's too much of a crutch so i think it's basal exposition
- 30:13as well the audience would have been the the the filmmakers should have known
- 30:18the audience would be smart enough that he's sitting there kids jumping on his leg,
- 30:22he's got the rays out and we can just see his eyes moving like he's talking
- 30:26to Charlie, but we don't need to hear the conversation. That would have been better.
- 30:30Yeah. And then when he puts away the blade, we know that Charlie's probably
- 30:34talked him down from doing it.
- 30:36That would have been more tense if he got rid of the voice of that scene. Yeah.
- 30:40No, yeah, it was lacking attention, whereas the original does have that.
- 30:44See, the original is so unique in that there's parts of it are like off-the-wall
- 30:48batshit and, you know, just bonkers.
- 30:51But there's a sort of deepness to it, you know, there's a depth to it,
- 30:57you know, at certain times.
- 31:00Whereas here, they're trying to juggle too much and not all of it works.
- 31:03Yeah, but a lot of it does.
- 31:05Yeah, some of it does, yeah. And it's well acted. You got to understand,
- 31:09we're talking about a slasher film.
- 31:11And slasher films get a bum rap. Most of them are crap. No kidding.
- 31:15We all get that. But this isn't crap.
- 31:17This is company-directed. Yes, they got a little arrogant, bit up more than
- 31:21they can chew, like the Nazi scene and so forth.
- 31:25But it's well-executed, pardon the pun. And I love the whole another side story with the snatcher.
- 31:31You've got where they're going after the snatcher.
- 31:38And these kids are on that little hidden playroom, which is kind of creepy,
- 31:42and the snatcher's in there, and they get the snatcher, but what we don't,
- 31:47and they're being followed by Max, the crooked cop.
- 31:49We don't really know what Max is. We know Max.
- 31:52We're supposed to think that Max thinks that Billy's up to something,
- 31:58and all that's all he's doing is following them.
- 32:01So when he catches the snatcher, but then Max kills Billy, It's a nice misdirect
- 32:07because we find out he's an accomplice with the snatcher.
- 32:12Yeah, he's involved in it. I thought that was obvious.
- 32:15That guy I didn't catch. No, no, I thought that was pretty obvious.
- 32:19Oh, you thought. I'm serious? You did not know he was the snatcher.
- 32:24I knew he was involved in some way. I thought it was really obvious because he set up. Oh, shit.
- 32:31But no, I'm fucking deadly serious. From the moment he comes into the film,
- 32:35whenever she has been arrested for beating up the ones at the hockey game,
- 32:41he is set up as a dick from the start.
- 32:44So he was either going to be a big red hurry.
- 32:47I was hoping and wanting him to be a red hurry and maybe save the day or something,
- 32:51but he's not. Yeah, but you're, so you didn't know he was a snatcher.
- 32:58I knew he was going to be the bad guy. You knew he was a dick,
- 33:01but you just said you knew he was part of the snatcher.
- 33:03None of us loved that. I knew he was going to, no, no, I knew he was going to
- 33:06be a bad guy in some way. Oh, we knew that.
- 33:09But I was hoping that they would flip it and he was just a red herring.
- 33:13No, no, I wouldn't say that I knew the exact plot details, that would be a lie.
- 33:17But what I'm saying is it was pretty obvious he was going to be a bad guy.
- 33:20Yeah, but I think that would have been stupid to have him as a good guy after
- 33:23beating the shit out of Pamela.
- 33:25You know, it's kind of like, oh, do you want to make this guy a good guy now?
- 33:28Well, some sort of redemption arc or something. Not a good guy per se,
- 33:32but, you know, I mean, we've already got a sort of a killer Santa who's basically
- 33:38an anti-hero. So who knows?
- 33:41It's Silent Night, Deadly Night. You know what? You can sit there and say that.
- 33:45You can say that with the original, but this one you can't because I got to
- 33:48say, this is a fun misdirect.
- 33:52Some of it works, some of it doesn't.
- 33:55Violent movie and I'm going with it.
- 33:58I can see the reviews being fair to this because I like what the direction it
- 34:02took and now the ending where he's dying and he passes his aura into Pamela
- 34:10and then now Pamela can hear Billy you know.
- 34:14Yeah. He's become coming.
- 34:17The minute I saw where how Billy got his, how Charlie in his head. His power.
- 34:24Yeah. power, I knew he was going to pass that on to Pamela because we already
- 34:27see Pamela has a violent temper.
- 34:29Yeah. It's just a re-instead in a certain way. Yeah.
- 34:32And it's also setting up the sequel. Yes. If it happens. Well,
- 34:36I won't. If they do, it's going to be directed and it's going to suck.
- 34:40But what would have worked to piggyback on what you're saying,
- 34:44it almost would have been better if they...
- 34:49Something with Max. They could have done something with Max with the power thing.
- 34:52It would have been better.
- 34:54I would have been happy enough to just stick with just it's basically post-traumatic stress type thing.
- 35:02You still have his parents having bumped off the grandfather and that's why
- 35:07he messed him up but I didn't like the supernatural element.
- 35:10I thought it didn't belong in a Silent Night, Deadly Night film.
- 35:14They don't really pick up. They don't use that really. It's not a big thing,
- 35:18but it's only in it for a minute.
- 35:21It does jar, though, with me. Yeah, all right. Fair enough.
- 35:25But I don't know. I'm giving this a pass. I'm on the fence.
- 35:29This is solid filmmaking. So much more competent than the original.
- 35:34But to be fair, the original, for that time, had balls.
- 35:43This lacks the sort of charm and the humor of the original, which I was hoping
- 35:48for getting into this remake but at the same time there is competency there,
- 35:53with a lot of it and it's well acted,
- 35:55and you know I think if they were going to go with the grim deadly straight
- 36:00tone they should have just stuck with it throughout and it would have worked
- 36:03better if they had just stuck with the one tone instead of trying to jump back and forward.
- 36:10I'm on the fence I'll probably watch it again at some point just to sort of fully decide,
- 36:17aspects work and other aspects didn't work for me and jarred for me,
- 36:22for me it doesn't have the charm and the humour of the original but it's you
- 36:28know it's a remake you can't recreate the 80s you can't recreate a cult classic
- 36:33intentionally I mean again,
- 36:38Blade Runner,
- 36:40thing. Those are cult classics. Okay?
- 36:45Silent Night Deadly Night is a cult classic. Oh, it's not. Come on. Absolutely it is.
- 36:50It's massively loved by... I'll give you that, but it clack. Yep.
- 36:55I will stick them on guns. No, I mean this is a better film than Silent Night.
- 37:00Blade Runner's, but the ones you mentioned are studio films.
- 37:03Oh, well, maybe not The Thing, but... No, no.
- 37:06The Thing and Blade Runner are both cult classics. Cult classics aren't B-movies.
- 37:11Cult classics are... They can be both. They can be both.
- 37:15They find their footing eventually.
- 37:18Silent Night is not talked about every day, like Blade Runner and the Thing.
- 37:21No, not as much, but it's still a cult classic for many people, including myself.
- 37:26I wouldn't go that far, but it's a cult film. It's my favorite Christmas film.
- 37:30It's my favorite Christmas film.
- 37:31No, it could be remade. You can tamper with it. Oh, yes, of course.
- 37:36I mean, come on. I'm talking, you know, you're not going to remake Blade Runner.
- 37:39I'm not saying you can't remake it.
- 37:40I mean, you know, but what I'm saying, I mean, you know, generally,
- 37:44in general terms, I'm not really a fan of remakes, but, you know,
- 37:47it's certainly not one that you can't, you know, not remake.
- 37:52So, yeah, I have no issue with that. You know, I'm not going to sort of throw
- 37:55a strut over that. I'm just saying it's not as good.
- 37:58But then it's It's hard to compare.
- 38:02You're talking 40 years later, so it's never going to be the same.
- 38:07Yeah. For us, lots of them, guys, lots of gore. Good Mr. X. Some work, some don't.
- 38:14Well shot, well acted. Our boy pretty much plays the same character from Halloween,
- 38:21but that's why they cast him, probably.
- 38:24Rowan Campbell. Is it Rowan? They should have had his brother in it,
- 38:26Ricky. They should have had Ricky.
- 38:30Maybe he's in the back so they'll make a sequel bring the CMC back.
- 38:38Fuck off duck but yeah you'll see a lot of some ladies the Cory character in Halloween Ends,
- 38:46Oh, yeah. He's been typecast, that guy. Yeah, no kidding.
- 38:49But he's likable in this one. He's a good actor. He can act. Yeah, he's good in this.
- 38:55They're all... Actually, and that's another thing. The acting's really good in this.
- 39:00Besides... It's solid. I'm sorry. Ruby Nosing isn't the best in this.
- 39:04He plays Pamela. I thought she was kind of annoying.
- 39:06She's alright. I think overall it's solid, the acting in this.
- 39:09I wouldn't say it's great or really good, but it's solid. You would say fucking...
- 39:13I remember you would say silent night you'd be like no no
- 39:16no the guy who plays billy's brilliant and and
- 39:20you're gonna original is perfect it's perfect are
- 39:22you kidding me are you fucking it's perfect
- 39:27in all its flaws anyway but yeah guys this is a solid solid effort and if you're
- 39:33looking for the exact same thing you're not going to get it and i always say
- 39:35do something different and they did it whether you like it or not that's on
- 39:39you that's your taste but i liked it they did something different definitely
- 39:44gets a pass for me. I'm on the fence.
- 39:47So, fuck you, Trevor. Yeah.
- 39:50Barbie's Day. God. Next up, Home Alone.
- 39:55Christmas Magic. I've never seen it. I can't. Yeah, you know what?
- 39:59You're a sick. You're a sick person. I'm sick because I don't watch children's films. I've seen.
- 40:05You're not going to like Home Alone because it's nice. I don't give a shit about
- 40:09children's films, but I will watch it for the podcast, and I will be honest.
- 40:13Yeah, I know you won't. And I will watch it in context for what it is, and I will be honest.
- 40:17And you know what? I like Drew Pesky. You know what?
- 40:21Joe Pesci. Okay. You said pesky.
- 40:24Are you going to correct my name? Yeah. No. Brian Blessed. No, no. One time.
- 40:29One time. You do it all the time. Twice you did it with Guillermo,
- 40:33and you did it with Brian Blessed. Well, how do you say it? How do you say it? It's Guillermo.
- 40:37Guillermo del Toro. Wow. It's Brian Blessed. It's Brian Blessed.
- 40:41I'm sticking with that one.
- 40:44So everybody's wrong, including Brian Blessed. Yep. Fuck him.
- 40:49All right. so yeah stick around for home alone it should be a fun one I have
- 40:53nothing else to add alright guys that's all we got for you take care.
