- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Wednesday, it's the 19th of
- 0:16June and here we are at the beginning of a new day and a new
- 0:21book of the Bible. We are jumping forward a whole
- 0:24lot of years and we are arriving somewhere between the late 40s
- 0:30and the early 60s AD here we are in Jerusalem.
- 0:34Here we've got this early church gathering together and who
- 0:38should rise to be one of the leaders but James, Jesus brother
- 0:42James, There are a few Jameses, but most people agree that this
- 0:47was Jesus brother and he is this moderating unifying leader of
- 0:51the church. And here he writes this letter
- 0:53that we're going to read together, this letter that got
- 0:55sent out of Jerusalem to all the Jews who had fled from Jerusalem
- 1:00and ended up all over the known world.
- 1:02And so he writes this as an encouragement to stay true to
- 1:06their faith and not just to to believe it, but to live it.
- 1:10And so this is often seen as a counterpoint to all of Paul's
- 1:14writing, which is all about focusing on our hearts and our
- 1:18faith and our justification through what Jesus did.
- 1:22James gets practical and James encourages people to live a
- 1:25certain and while some people have got quite uptight saying
- 1:30that he puts way too much emphasis on things that we do
- 1:32and not what Jesus has done for us.
- 1:35Really what James is doing is not usurping Jesus sacrificial
- 1:41death to save us but he is saying if your faith is real
- 1:47then let us put Jesus at the centre of our lives and live
- 1:50accordingly. So let us read together this
- 1:53book of James. It's a short one, there's only 5
- 1:55chapters and we shall begin today reading together James
- 1:59chapter one. This letter is from James, a
- 2:13slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2:17I am writing to the 12 tribes Jewish believers scattered
- 2:21abroad. Greetings, dear brothers and
- 2:25sisters. When troubles of any kind come
- 2:28your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy for
- 2:33you. Know that when your faith is
- 2:35tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.
- 2:38So let it grow. For where your endurance is
- 2:42fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing
- 2:46nothing. If you need wisdom, ask our
- 2:50generous God and He will give it to you.
- 2:53He will not rebuke you for asking, but when you ask Him, be
- 2:56sure that your faith is in God alone.
- 3:00Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled
- 3:06as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.
- 3:10Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
- 3:14Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are
- 3:19unstable in everything they do. Believers who are poor have
- 3:24something to boast about, for God has honoured them, and those
- 3:29who are rich should boast that God as humbled them.
- 3:33They will fade away like a little flower in the field.
- 3:37The hot sun rises and the grass Withers.
- 3:41The little flower droops and falls.
- 3:44It's beauty fades away in the same way the rich will fade away
- 3:49with all of their achievements. God blesses those who patiently
- 3:54endure testing and temptation. Afterward, they will receive the
- 3:59crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.
- 4:04And remember when you were being tempted, Do not say God is
- 4:09tempting me. God is never tempted to do
- 4:12wrong, and He never tempts anyone else.
- 4:15Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and
- 4:20drag us away. These desires give birth to
- 4:23sinful actions, and when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth
- 4:29to death. So don't be misled, my dear
- 4:32brothers and sisters, whatever is good and perfect as a gift
- 4:37coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the
- 4:41lights and the heavens. He never changes or casts a
- 4:45shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by
- 4:48giving us His true word, and we, out of all creation, became His
- 4:55prized possession. Understand this, my dear
- 5:00brothers and sisters, you must all be quick to listen, slow to
- 5:05speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the
- 5:10righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and
- 5:14evil in your lives and humbly accept the Word God has planted
- 5:19in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.
- 5:25But don't just listen to God's Word.
- 5:28You must do what it says, otherwise you are only fooling
- 5:31yourselves. For if you listen to the word
- 5:34and don't obey, it is like glancing at your face in a
- 5:38mirror. You see yourself walk away and
- 5:42forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into
- 5:46the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says
- 5:50and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for
- 5:54doing it. If you claim to be religious but
- 5:58don't control your tongue, you are fooling yourself and your
- 6:03religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the
- 6:07sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in
- 6:13their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.
- 6:29Well Lord, if this isn't enough just to blow anyones mind, I
- 6:32don't know what is. That we would be chosen as your
- 6:36prized possessions. That you, the glorious God of
- 6:41the universe, choose us to be the apple of your eye, to be
- 6:49what gives you a spring in your step.
- 6:52That's us. Well, that's amazing.
- 6:56That is amazing and we are so grateful that you would just
- 7:01love us like you do, and I just pray that you continue to
- 7:07transform us. Transform us so that our lives
- 7:12would reflect what our hearts believe.
- 7:16That you would continue to transform us from the inside
- 7:19out, not that you would shape our behaviours and that you
- 7:23would shape our hearts, make them more like yours.
- 7:27And through that transformation, while our lives will be
- 7:31transformed and renewed. So we come before you.
- 7:35We lay all of our own desires down where all of our sinful
- 7:40ways come from. And we pray that you would have
- 7:44your way and that your Spirit would dwell powerfully in us,
- 7:50shaping us, shifting our hearts, breaking down those stubborn
- 7:56barriers that we put in the way so that we can live lives
- 8:02focused on your Kingdom priorities because we love you.
- 8:05We are so grateful for you and all that you've done for us.
- 8:09And we pray all of this in the name of Jesus.
- 8:12Oh man.
