Transcript
- 0:00My name is Richard Patrick. I am the lead singer and guitar sometimes guitar
- 0:06player for the band Filter, and we are releasing a brand new record called
- 0:11The Algorithm and it comes out August twenty five. Yeah, out of for
- 0:15Richard, thanks for joining us today. Thanks for having me, h my
- 0:19pleasures. As you mentioned, Filter returned with your first album in seven years,
- 0:23titled The Algorithm on August twenty fifth. So how you feeled about it?
- 0:26The closer it gets, I am really psyched. I mean, I
- 0:31think it's really a great body of work and I'm I'm excited. It reminds
- 0:35me of the old days, like title of record amalgamat that that era,
- 0:41and I'm super pumped and I can't wait to hear the reaction from the fans.
- 0:48It was liked a dive in a bit deeper about the album musically and
- 0:51what you've gone for with it. Well, I love working with new artists
- 0:58as well. When I work on Filter records, I love working I loved
- 1:02working with Sam Tinnez and Zach Monowitz and my bandmates Johnny Radkey and Elias Mullen
- 1:10and Rotten Bobby and it's uh, it's it's just It was really fun because
- 1:18I wanted to make something that was really agro and crazy, but it's something
- 1:23that also had hooks, you know, something that you could you could walk
- 1:26away with and get hummed to your you know yourself, and uh, yeah,
- 1:33I think we did that. You've released this thing goes up interration for
- 1:37the Baton and feast down, So I would decided decided a good sonic representation
- 1:41of what do you expect? Yeah, but there's always a few curveballs with
- 1:46Filter. There's always going to be a lighter song like take a Picture.
- 1:49There's there's a song called Burnout the Sun, which reminds me of take a
- 1:52Picture, and another song called command Z, which is really kind of just
- 1:57a beautiful, little weird instrumental well not instrumentally, it's very like light and
- 2:06airy, but the subject matter is really heavy and I'm just super proud of
- 2:10it. But yeah, there's gonna be some curveballs on this record. I
- 2:15hope everybody's ready for it. And I noticed that the Algorithm this is one
- 2:20of the subtitles on the album, So where does that name fit in with
- 2:23it? The algorithm is Everybody's got an algorithm, Everybody's got a problem that
- 2:30they need to solve and whether it's you know, whether it's for me.
- 2:38My biggest problem in life was my drinking problem that I had when I was
- 2:43in my thirties and twenties. And you know, I solve that issue every
- 2:50day just by not drinking. And but everybody's got their own fight, and
- 2:58so the algorithm is is the challenge that you face that you can overcome.
- 3:04The press release says that you have given the classic field of sound a modern
- 3:07sonic edge on this album. Right, firstly, do you agree with that?
- 3:09And if you do, how do you how do you the old sound
- 3:14a modern modern edge? I don't know. I mean it was basically I
- 3:20I I you know, I live in the now. You know, I'm
- 3:23I'm I'm I'm inspired by today's you know, music, but not necessarily today's
- 3:29rock music. I'm inspired by like guys like Scar Lord I think he's amazing,
- 3:34or or this EMD artist named rez ari Zz, and I I kind
- 3:43of focus on that more than I do like what's going on with rock,
- 3:49because when I hear rock today, I just think of what I would do,
- 3:52you know what I mean, Like, I don't know if I'd go
- 3:53to that chorus or I don't know if I would do that that that verse,
- 3:58you know what I mean? So I and just you know, a
- 4:02lot of what inspires me as well is the movie scores that I do a
- 4:08lot of. Thus, you got into this album with the said idea of
- 4:11way and wanted the sounding guys, I wanted to take shape more during the
- 4:14creative process. No, it totally took shape in the creative process. Like
- 4:18I literally jumped in feet first and just and just explored and just and just
- 4:27swam around musically and did whatever I wanted to do. There was touch on
- 4:30this before. But you're collaborating with a number of artists, including Zach Metowitz,
- 4:34Sam Sineza, he said, Mark Jackson, and he and Scott said,
- 4:38what was the reason behind bringing so many different people in? I just
- 4:42like to like to I love collaborating with different artists that I think are really
- 4:47cool. You know. I love Sam, He's an amazing lyricist, an
- 4:51amazing melody writer. Zachack Monowitz brings insane guitar parts like for for the Beaten
- 5:00and he did up against the Wall and he did, uh say it again,
- 5:09and uh, you know, I just love working with different artists that
- 5:14that can help me kind of explore where Filter can go. You know,
- 5:17take Filter on a little bit of a journey. Yeah, I you know,
- 5:21I really recommend that to all my fellow artists. Is just you know,
- 5:28shake it up a little bit. You know, they got back in
- 5:30tom of Bit Brian, like you started Filter out the leaving naughtedge styles in
- 5:33ninety ninety three. So what was your early vision for the Bad and how's
- 5:38it? China Suns. The earliest vision was that we would make records that
- 5:44would move people, and and that vision has not changed. You know.
- 5:49I got into this industry because I really just thought I had something to say.
- 5:56And when I left nine H Nails, I I I just promised myself
- 6:01that I was gonna do as as good a job as I possibly could,
- 6:04and and and and make music that really made move people. Yeah, that
- 6:13would like this year thirtieth anniversary Brod Scaring Opsolo, Like, is that sort
- 6:17of given you scout to reflect on the band and your achievements. Yeah,
- 6:23thirty years is a long time, and I it's it's it's I if I
- 6:30if I stop and and and just uh pat myself on the back, I
- 6:34feel like I've I've I've stopped too early, like I for me, you
- 6:41know, music is is a constantly evolving thing, and I don't know.
- 6:46I I'm I'm glad that I've been in it as long as I have,
- 6:53but I feel like I still have a long way to go. And you're
- 6:56off onto This might be Rob Zombie, Alice Scooper and Minister. It should
- 7:00be a hell of a lot of fun. Yes, we are going on
- 7:03tour. It's called the Freaks on Parade Tour and it's Rob Zombie, Alice
- 7:06Cooper, Ministry and Filter and we are really looking forward to it. All
- 7:14the bands are friends. Like I've known Rob for thirty years, I've known
- 7:16al for like forty I've known I've known Alice Cooper for like six years.
- 7:24So everybody's friends and we all just want to have a good time and bring
- 7:29forth the rock and play the hits. You know what I'm saying now,
- 7:33I'm not expecting that line up to make it IV but if you personally gone
- 7:36as far as booking anything for Australia, Australia is going to happen. We
- 7:42are going to announce an Australian tour within the next couple of days, oh
- 7:46with that lineup, or just just yourself, No, just ourselves, just
- 7:50headlining ourselves. Yeah, very cool. All right there, before we go,
- 7:55mate, I've just started a new heavy spot a couple of new heavy
- 7:58Spotify playlists up. So I'm just gonna ask you to give me three of
- 8:01your own songs for each playlist. One song going to get you in the
- 8:05mood to party, one of your songs it'll save your marriage, and one
- 8:09of your songs it could potentially end to marriage. Okay, the first one
- 8:13is the drowning to get the party started. The second one is to save
- 8:20my marriage is burn out the sun. And then to end my marriage,
- 8:26I would probably say something like based down. No, no, no,
- 8:35no, not face down, Say it again, Lay it again, Yeah,
- 8:41say it again. That would be the one that that would be the
- 8:43one that when I would play at the at the end of my wedding marriage
- 8:48because that literally that was written about like the fact that my wife always tells
- 8:52me stuff and I can't hear her, like for some reason, I just
- 8:56don't listen, and and I I'm gonna I'm gonna use that in a song
- 9:01when I when I was listening to the song. We were on a walk
- 9:05and she was talking to me and I was like, say it again.
- 9:07I'm sorry I wasn't listening and she's so that's what I would sing it for
- 9:13the end of our marriage, if I hope that never happens. Beautiful,
- 9:16Richard All, Well, thanks very much for each toad that I made.
- 9:18It's been a pleasure of The Algorithm is out August twenty fifth, and she
- 9:22has a Buddy good album made. I listened to it before the interview and
- 9:24well done. And she's a cracker. So and we'll see you over here.
- 9:28When you announced you to OW, I guess yes you got it,
- 9:33and absolutely thank you so much for having me. I really appreciate it,
- 9:37and I'm really looking forward to coming out and supplying some rock
