- 0:01Hey, welcome back to day four of our series on
- 0:04biblical manhood and spiritual disciplines today
- 0:08We're confronting one of the most critical pillars
- 0:10of character self mastery Interdiscipline and
- 0:14the hidden battleground of the mind and let's
- 0:16consider Proverbs 25 28 like a city whose walls
- 0:20are broken through as a person who lacks self
- 0:22-control or if we look at the ESV Version it
- 0:26says a man without self -control is like a city
- 0:28broken into and left without walls. So in the
- 0:32ancient Near East, a wall wasn't an aesthetic
- 0:35perimeter or a minor obstacle. It was a civilization's
- 0:39entire survival mechanism. It stood between flourishing
- 0:43life, total destruction from marauding armies,
- 0:47plunderers, and chaos. And a city without walls
- 0:50was a sitting duck. It was easy prey for a roaming
- 0:53adversary. Solomon, he applies that physical
- 0:57reality directly to the human soul. The Hebrew
- 1:01concept behind having rule over one spirit, Mastar
- 1:08carries the weight of active restraint, sovereign
- 1:11discipline, and a muscular ability to say a decisive
- 1:15nob to a destructive impulse. explosive pride
- 1:19and unwholesome desires. You look at the cultural
- 1:23landscape, we have to navigate every day. How
- 1:26many men are walking around as broken down cities?
- 1:29The breeches in our walls don't usually come
- 1:31from battering rams. They come from the form
- 1:33of glowing screens, unending notifications, instant
- 1:38gratification, things we shouldn't be looking
- 1:41at, uncontrolled anger and an obsessive pursuit
- 1:45of comfort. When our internal defenses crumble,
- 1:48we leave ourselves wide open to moral ruin, emotional
- 1:51outbursts as well and spiritual defeat. To rebuild
- 1:55those stones, we have to look back to men, men
- 1:58who really understood what real spiritual warfare
- 2:01demanded. Let's take some lessons here from the
- 2:06desert fathers. In the third and fourth century,
- 2:10the Roman Empire was shifting. Christianity moved
- 2:13from being a persecuted faith, into the halls
- 2:17of being impurely accepted and luxury. Yet as
- 2:22the outward pressure vanished, a different danger
- 2:25emerged. We call it spiritual complacency. And
- 2:29a group of believers, they recognized that this
- 2:32ease, this lifestyle is quietly rotting their
- 2:35spiritual resolve. So led by figures like Anthony
- 2:39de Grey, these men walked away from the comforts
- 2:41of civic life. into the harsh barren Egyptian
- 2:45wilderness, places like Natria and the Desert
- 2:49of Settys. History calls them the Desert Fathers.
- 2:53Now, you know, it's easy for modern thinkers
- 2:56to dismiss their flight into the desert as mere
- 2:58escapism. But Anthony and his contemporaries,
- 3:02they didn't run away to hide from struggle. They
- 3:05went into the desert because they realized the
- 3:08fiercest battle wasn't against political adversaries
- 3:10anymore. It was waged inside the human heart.
- 3:14And the desert offered no distractions. There
- 3:17was no banquets to help with their anxiety, no
- 3:21special pills, no entertainment, the mask, emptiness.
- 3:25So I guess no Netflix and no social acclaim or
- 3:29anything to inflate your ego. It's just you and
- 3:32nature. And out among the rocks and the sand,
- 3:36Anthony, he faced his internal passions head
- 3:39on through three primary weapons. through solitude,
- 3:44through fasting, and third, an unceasing prayer.
- 3:49And they understood a timeless spiritual principle.
- 3:52If you cannot govern your own appetite, your
- 3:55tongue, your eyes, and your quiet thoughts, you
- 3:57can't stand firm when real spiritual opposition
- 4:00strikes. So they didn't seek suffering for a
- 4:04suffering's sake. They sought to create an inner
- 4:07fortress to make their wall strong enough that
- 4:10nothing could external could breach their fellowship
- 4:13with God. So this brings us directly to Apostle
- 4:18Paul's charge to his young protege in 1 Timothy
- 4:24chapter 4 verse 7 to 8. And Paul says, have nothing
- 4:28to do with godless myths and old wives tales.
- 4:31Rather, train yourself to be godly for physical
- 4:34training is some value, but godliness has value
- 4:36for all things, holding promise for both the
- 4:39present life and life to come. So Paul, being
- 4:43the way Paul is in the Bible, he cut straight
- 4:45through trivial noise, rejects the hollow chatter
- 4:49and the distractions of your era, instead focus
- 4:52on the directive, train yourself to be godly.
- 4:56The Greek word Paul uses for train is gymnasio,
- 5:00the root from which we get our modern word gymnasium.
- 5:02In the Greco -Roman culture, training at the
- 5:05gymnasium was intentional, it was demanding,
- 5:08it was rigorous. And it was daily. You didn't
- 5:11drift into physical shape. You stripped off the
- 5:14hindrances and engaged in really hard exertion.
- 5:20Kind of like today. Paul doesn't disparage physical
- 5:24discipline. He acknowledges that hitting the
- 5:26gym, building strength, and keeping the body
- 5:29fit has value. But its scope is, let's just say,
- 5:34it's temporary. It lasts as long as your earthly
- 5:37breath. Godliness, on the other hand, yields
- 5:41infinite returns. It fortifies your present character,
- 5:45it helps you protect your family, and it secures
- 5:47that internal reward. So how does a modern man
- 5:52enter God's gymnasium and begin laying stones
- 5:55upon stones to rebuild those collapsed walls
- 5:58that we've allowed to happen? So I'll give you
- 6:02three quick examples here. The first one is,
- 6:05hey guys, let's reclaim your appetite through
- 6:08through fasting, through biblical fasting. We
- 6:10live in a very on -demand culture. I'm not going
- 6:13to lie, the other night I wanted some ice cream.
- 6:15It's right down the road. You can grab some ice
- 6:17cream, have it even delivered to you like that.
- 6:18So when you introduce regular intentional fasting,
- 6:22whether from food or some habitual comfort, you
- 6:27train your flesh to sit as the passenger seat
- 6:30while the spirit takes the wheel. Okay, your
- 6:33fleshly desire is no longer in control. It should
- 6:37be your spirit. implementing a second example
- 6:41might be implement, you know, digital quiet hours.
- 6:44If your morning begins by scrolling through social
- 6:46feeds and reacting to messages that are sent
- 6:51to you, maybe like, you know, the middle of the
- 6:52night or something, your walls are breached before
- 6:55your feet touch the floor. So make sure let's,
- 6:58let's try and carve out, and I'm speaking to
- 7:00myself, let's try and carve out untouchable margins
- 7:02of silence in the dailies. you know, and let
- 7:05the daily scripture intake before the world gets
- 7:07a say. So let's maybe look at reading the Bible
- 7:11or praying, you know, before we do anything else
- 7:16to get our mind correct and right with the Lord.
- 7:19And then the third piece of advice I could say
- 7:22is try to subdue reactive impulses. You know,
- 7:26when anger spikes, when lust rises up or, you
- 7:31know, when that pride flares up, Don't rely on
- 7:34your raw willpower. Rely on the Holy Spirit to
- 7:38help with your self -mastery. When something
- 7:42comes up, pause, step back, invoke Christ's strength
- 7:45to say no before the breach widens. Spiritual
- 7:49discipline is rarely glamorous. It's built in
- 7:53the hidden, unapplauded moments of everyday restraint.
- 7:58This is something I had to work on. Walking around,
- 8:03angry upset at things and letting that go and
- 8:07you know knowing that Christ is in control it
- 8:10changes everything guys it doesn't happen overnight
- 8:12but it does happen and it allows for a much more
- 8:16peaceful existence realizing that we are not
- 8:19the God of our life and that Jesus is the God
- 8:21of our life and he ultimately has everything
- 8:24in control so as we close out day four let's
- 8:27let's take away some of the theory and let's
- 8:29bring this Let's take this right to our lives
- 8:32right now. Take an honest look. Inventory your
- 8:36perimeter, inventory your wall. First, where's
- 8:41your wall currently broken? Which passion or
- 8:44distraction or unregulated screen time, unchecked
- 8:48temper, secret appetite or desire for effortless
- 8:51ease is ruling you most right now. And then second,
- 8:55what's one specific... non -negotiable discipline
- 8:58you'll put into place starting today as you reclaim
- 9:01your focus and silence. It doesn't need to be
- 9:03an overhaul of your entire life. It needs to
- 9:05be a consistent stone laid every morning. A man
- 9:09without self -control is defenseless, but a man
- 9:12trained in godliness, fortified by the spirit
- 9:15and anchored in truth is a city built upon a
- 9:18hill that can't be shaken. So, you know, set
- 9:21the boundary, put down the distraction and rebuild
- 9:25the wall. Thank you again for listening here
- 9:28for day four as I fill in for John on the Hall
- 9:33hotline. It's an honor. And again, guys, the
- 9:36things that I spoke about, these are suggestions.
- 9:39You can use your own methods to help rebuild
- 9:42that wall. I'm gonna start with tomorrow. I try
- 9:45to get up and read the Bible in the morning.
- 9:49Currently I'm going through, I just finished
- 9:51Acts. I'm going through Romans and I'm finishing
- 9:54up Isaiah. So I try and read. something from
- 9:56the Old Testament, something from the New. There
- 9:59are days that I miss, so my first resolve is
- 10:03to try not to miss any days. So sometimes on
- 10:06the weekends, I do miss because I sleep in a
- 10:08little and then I run out to do family things
- 10:11on the weekend time. But, you know, start with
- 10:14small things. Those small grains of sand turn
- 10:16into larger boulders, okay, eventually to strengthen
- 10:21yourself and build that wall. So again, I appreciate
- 10:24it. I'm just honored to be here. And why should
- 10:29we do it? Well, because it's the right thing
- 10:30to do and Christ is King. And then why listen
- 10:33to this podcast? Because it's the hallway. Thanks
- 10:36guys. Have a good one.
