- 0:01Nothing fails like success. There's a story behind that.
- 0:06This is your daily message from Chad #1127 to upgrade your
- 0:10mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:12Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:14yourself. This message is specially
- 0:16dedicated to Chris Barclay. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:20You think reaching the goal means you're done, but upgraded
- 0:22thinking knows the summit is only halfway.
- 0:25Here's the story. Dave Montesanti is an eye doctor
- 0:29from Buffalo, NY. On April 20th, 2026, he ran the
- 0:33Boston Marathon in under 4 hours.
- 0:35Less than a week later, he was on a plane to Nepal to climb
- 0:39Mount Everest. He didn't plan the timing.
- 0:42He qualified for Boston about the same time.
- 0:44The Everestrip was already set. Trainers told him to pick 1.
- 0:48He refused. He trained for both at once,
- 0:50running 10 KS during the week and sleeping in a hypoxic tent
- 0:53to get his body ready for thin air.
- 0:56The total expedition took approximately 4 weeks, most of
- 0:59it in the dark, climbing at night to avoid avalanches.
- 1:02The final stage took 22 hours to reach the summit.
- 1:06He stood on top of the world at 7:49 AM on May 22nd.
- 1:11He called it the hardest physical challenge of his life.
- 1:14Then the dangerous part came. The mountain doesn't kill most
- 1:18climbers on the way up, it kills them on the way down. 80% of the
- 1:22climbers who die on Mount Everest die on the descent.
- 1:27On the ascent, fear keeps you sharp.
- 1:29Every step is deliberate. Then you summit.
- 1:32The goal is achieved, the adrenaline drains out, your
- 1:34guard drops and exhaustion, thin air and complacency do the rest.
- 1:39Dave still had 7 hours of climbing below him, 7 hours
- 1:43where the celebration had to wait.
- 1:45He treated the descent like the climb, because it was.
- 1:49This isn't just about mountains. Companies are never more, more
- 1:53vulnerable than at the height of their success.
- 1:56Careers collapse right after the big win, their promotion, the
- 2:00championship, the sale, the summit.
- 2:03Success quietly removes the fear that made you careful.
- 2:07Andy Grove, the legendary CEO of Intel, put it this way.
- 2:11Success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure.
- 2:15Only the paranoid survive. The better story to tell
- 2:19yourself is the summit is halfway.
- 2:22If you sleep on a whim, you'll wake up with a loss.
- 2:26Whatever you just achieved, don't camp on it.
- 2:29Climb down with the same care you climbed up, then find the
- 2:33next mountain. Dave already has two more of the
- 2:37Seven Summits and a marathon in every state.
