- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the gym of the Guardians. Mike tearing off joining
- 0:06Speaker 1: us right now. Mike, really appreciate the time. How's spring
- 0:09Speaker 1: training for you? How is the off season?
- 0:11Speaker 2: It's great, you know what, seeing the sun and being
- 0:13Speaker 2: out in warm weather. AJ and I were just talking
- 0:15Speaker 2: about it. It's a lot better than being in Cleveland's
- 0:17Speaker 2: time of year. So it's it's been going great.
- 0:19Speaker 3: It's you know.
- 0:20Speaker 2: One of the amazing things in coming down here to
- 0:22Speaker 2: our camp is almost all of our guys have been
- 0:25Speaker 2: here for like a month.
- 0:26Speaker 4: When did you get here?
- 0:27Speaker 3: I got here about a week and a half yesterday.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I got here as early as I could, about
- 0:32Speaker 2: a week and a half ago. My family's back in Cleveland.
- 0:34Speaker 2: But you get here and there was like, you know,
- 0:35Speaker 2: one hundred players between major and minor league guys. Our
- 0:38Speaker 2: guys love coming here, love putting the work in, and
- 0:41Speaker 2: we have such a young team.
- 0:42Speaker 3: It's a huge factor for us. So that's been great
- 0:44Speaker 3: to see.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Oh no, this is real quick. He wanted to point
- 0:49Speaker 1: out the outfit he did the gym.
- 0:54Speaker 3: You guys like that every gym.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Yeah, as soon as you get the job, they just
- 0:58Speaker 2: get of them in all different colors.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Yes, say here, wear this every day.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Yep, that's exactly right.
- 1:04Speaker 4: I mean, but I say, I tell people this, We
- 1:06Speaker 4: joke about this. It's the for the men. It's the
- 1:08Speaker 4: sun dress for men. You can wear it unfancy, you
- 1:12Speaker 4: can wear it fancy, you can wear golfing. You wear
- 1:13Speaker 4: it at the beach, wear it at spring training, wear
- 1:16Speaker 4: it in the front office. It does everything. It's a
- 1:18Speaker 4: it's a utility player.
- 1:19Speaker 5: I like McDonald.
- 1:21Speaker 4: It's the John McDonald of men's wear.
- 1:25Speaker 3: The twelve year veteran utility players.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Couldn't it Yep, field cord.
- 1:30Speaker 5: That's right.
- 1:30Speaker 6: And it looks and it looks nice. It's good, Mike.
- 1:33Speaker 6: When I was with the organization in twenty seventeen, I
- 1:36Speaker 6: got to see firsthand for an entire year what you
- 1:40Speaker 6: just talked about. You just said, Man, everybody's been down
- 1:42Speaker 6: here for a month. How how how deliberate is it
- 1:48Speaker 6: that you guys set it up so that your players
- 1:51Speaker 6: coming through the organization have a place to sept for
- 1:55Speaker 6: on like on Thanksgiving Day, on Christmas Day, and like
- 1:59Speaker 6: a week around Christmas in New Year's to always be
- 2:02Speaker 6: working out for the fans who don't know you guys,
- 2:04Speaker 6: have you have Turkey Camp. You have Jay Camp, which
- 2:08Speaker 6: is January. You have Christmas Camp, which is like December.
- 2:14Speaker 6: It's a very deliberate thing. But do you guys feel
- 2:17Speaker 6: like other organizations are like, Man, those guys are dumb
- 2:20Speaker 6: for doing that. And I think you guys get so
- 2:22Speaker 6: much value out of it because you're investing in your
- 2:26Speaker 6: people in the organization.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Yeah, first off, Eric, great to see you, man.
- 2:31Speaker 4: But were you around when he was Yeah, when you fired.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Him, I'm probably the same as what it is today.
- 2:37Speaker 3: But Chris is about me. It was all Chris's fault.
- 2:40Speaker 3: It was all Chris's fault.
- 2:42Speaker 6: We'll get We'll get to that in a sec. You
- 2:44Speaker 6: can answer the question, but we'll get to you guys
- 2:46Speaker 6: firing me in a second.
- 2:50Speaker 3: It's a competitive advantage for us.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I mean, look, we are a young team where we're
- 2:54Speaker 2: one of the youngest teams in baseball, we have been
- 2:56Speaker 2: for years.
- 2:57Speaker 3: We have to do things differently.
- 2:58Speaker 2: We're a small market and in today economic environment in baseball,
- 3:03Speaker 2: we can't go out and sign top tier free agents.
- 3:05Speaker 3: It's just impossible with the economic landscape.
- 3:07Speaker 2: So we have to do it through scouting and development,
- 3:10Speaker 2: and a huge part of that, as you guys all
- 3:12Speaker 2: know from your playing careers is your off season. You
- 3:15Speaker 2: have to find a way to raise the floor in
- 3:17Speaker 2: your off season, right, how do you just how do
- 3:19Speaker 2: you keep building?
- 3:20Speaker 3: How do you whether it's a physical.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Profile, the bat speed, the velocity, the command, whatever it is,
- 3:25Speaker 2: how you build those things in the off season and
- 3:28Speaker 2: really push the envelope on what you can do. So
- 3:29Speaker 2: we try to provide as many programs as we can
- 3:31Speaker 2: for our guys, and thankfully we have a culture where
- 3:34Speaker 2: guys buy into that and they love being out here together.
- 3:38Speaker 6: So it's one of those It's one of those things
- 3:40Speaker 6: that I spent a ton of time in other organizations.
- 3:43Speaker 6: You guys do it by far. I've always said the
- 3:46Speaker 6: best of anybody, and I think it's a value that
- 3:49Speaker 6: if other organizations knew it or did the same thing,
- 3:53Speaker 6: you guys would lose a competitive advantage. But we'll get
- 3:56Speaker 6: to it. Don't tell anybody else all the stuff, I
- 3:57Speaker 6: won't tell anybody else, Okay, But getting to the whole
- 4:01Speaker 6: fired me thing. I played the entire season in twenty seventeen,
- 4:05Speaker 6: and when I got hired in the beginning of twenty seventeen,
- 4:10Speaker 6: I told you guys, I said, you know what I said,
- 4:12Speaker 6: I'll help do whatever it takes to get to the
- 4:14Speaker 6: World Series. And on August thirty first I got I
- 4:18Speaker 6: got trades.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Shit.
- 4:20Speaker 6: By the way, we gotta wear helmets.
- 4:22Speaker 7: An feet behind the.
- 4:25Speaker 4: But that's not even like who just needs need to
- 4:28Speaker 4: be testing. I saw the testers here earlier. Whoever hit
- 4:31Speaker 4: the ball, well, I gets the windows blowing out. But still.
- 4:36Speaker 6: All that to say, one of my greatest prognostication moments
- 4:41Speaker 6: was you guys traded me to the Yankees, and you
- 4:44Speaker 6: called me into the office and I said, well, I
- 4:46Speaker 6: lied to you at the beginning of the year. Now
- 4:48Speaker 6: it's going to be the Yankees who are going to
- 4:50Speaker 6: have the best chance of making it to the World Series.
- 4:52Speaker 6: And do you remember in seventeen who knocked the Guardians
- 4:55Speaker 6: or the Indians time out of the playoffs?
- 4:58Speaker 4: You cursed us? How about?
- 5:00Speaker 3: I can't believe it.
- 5:01Speaker 7: You traded me.
- 5:03Speaker 6: I want every p of the trip a team, and
- 5:04Speaker 6: you traded me. So I blame you, guys. So anybody
- 5:08Speaker 6: who wants somebody to blame, turn off the guy.
- 5:13Speaker 3: That's a good story.
- 5:14Speaker 4: I love it.
- 5:15Speaker 7: That is good. I like it.
- 5:17Speaker 4: That's funny. All right. I want to go on something
- 5:21Speaker 4: you talked about you mentioned it. I don't know, I
- 5:23Speaker 4: don't like bringing this up, but you mentioned the whole
- 5:25Speaker 4: small market.
- 5:26Speaker 7: Yeah, right.
- 5:27Speaker 4: As a GM of a small market team, small market,
- 5:30Speaker 4: you know, you have to play within the margins or
- 5:34Speaker 4: outside the margins, try to find the small things. What's
- 5:37Speaker 4: that like on a daily basis? Explain to people that
- 5:39Speaker 4: are watching when your owner comes to you and says,
- 5:42Speaker 4: here's your payroll, of your your budget one hundred and whatever,
- 5:45Speaker 4: a million, fifty million, whatever, random numbers, and then you say, okay,
- 5:50Speaker 4: how do I do this? And you talk about young guys?
- 5:53Speaker 4: But what's it like when you call free agents? Because
- 5:54Speaker 4: you do guys? Do you guys do sign for agents?
- 5:57Speaker 4: And you say, hey, look you know we won the
- 5:59Speaker 4: division where really good, we have young pitching, we have this,
- 6:01Speaker 4: we have Jose, We need you to come. Can you
- 6:05Speaker 4: take do you go at? Can you take a million? Less?
- 6:07Speaker 7: Can?
- 6:08Speaker 4: Right? How does that work? Because that it's got to
- 6:10Speaker 4: be put you in a bad situation at times and
- 6:13Speaker 4: it's not your fault to hand your dealt but you've
- 6:15Speaker 4: done a great job of it. So how do you
- 6:17Speaker 4: handle that when you call free agents?
- 6:18Speaker 2: I mean, first things first, we know who we are,
- 6:22Speaker 2: and we don't sell ourselves as something else, and so
- 6:24Speaker 2: we have a lot of players that love being here
- 6:27Speaker 2: because of the culture that we create, and we're looking
- 6:29Speaker 2: for guys like that. So Austin Hedges continues to re
- 6:31Speaker 2: sign here because the opportunity we provide him and because
- 6:34Speaker 2: of the culture that hopefully he has been a part
- 6:37Speaker 2: of creating, but also that is here that he loves
- 6:39Speaker 2: playing in. And you see that with other guys, whether
- 6:41Speaker 2: it's some of the relievers that we sign, some of
- 6:43Speaker 2: the starters we've signed over the years, or position players.
- 6:46Speaker 3: This is a fun place to play.
- 6:47Speaker 2: And look, you can stack up payrolls as much as
- 6:50Speaker 2: you want, but we don't make excuses about payrolls. Over
- 6:52Speaker 2: the past ten years, we've been to the postseason seven times,
- 6:55Speaker 2: so that we don't. We are stacking ourselves up on wins,
- 6:58Speaker 2: not on payroll, and we try to create that winning
- 7:01Speaker 2: environment where guys know it's our internal guys that drive us.
- 7:05Speaker 2: We look to compliment the team with great people and
- 7:07Speaker 2: great players, but it's the internal people here. It's the
- 7:10Speaker 2: internal players that have come up through our system that
- 7:12Speaker 2: are going to be the core of our success going forward.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I absolutely, absolutely love that answer is al Central guy
- 7:19Speaker 4: Twins White sox al Central. I heard it all the time,
- 7:22Speaker 4: especially when it was Twins, Oh, you can't compete because
- 7:24Speaker 4: you don't have so to hear you say what you
- 7:26Speaker 4: just It makes my heart happy because you know what
- 7:29Speaker 4: you are and you're like, we're going to figure this out,
- 7:31Speaker 4: and you're competitive and you want to win. But the
- 7:33Speaker 4: one guy that's you just are like the perfect example
- 7:36Speaker 4: of that. Ze Ramiroz. You could have gotten probably more
- 7:39Speaker 4: on the open market, but he said, I love Cleveland,
- 7:41Speaker 4: I love what you guys are doing. I'm stay there
- 7:44Speaker 4: for life. And good for y'all for recognizing that and
- 7:46Speaker 4: saying here you go. Hosey.
- 7:48Speaker 2: He sets the standard and he's the example. And for
- 7:50Speaker 2: him for him to have have had multiple times now
- 7:54Speaker 2: three times now, to have had the desire to want
- 7:57Speaker 2: to commit to being here, I mean that speaks volumes
- 8:00Speaker 2: and it's incredible and I'm so thankful for our ownership
- 8:02Speaker 2: group to be willing to invest back in him. But really,
- 8:06Speaker 2: he could have had many opportunities in his career, but
- 8:09Speaker 2: the thing that was most important to him was committing
- 8:11Speaker 2: to hear and being the best player he could for
- 8:13Speaker 2: the Cleveland Guardians, which is a pretty neat thing.
- 8:16Speaker 7: All right.
- 8:17Speaker 6: We got the Warby Parkers. I got the Raiders, but
- 8:20Speaker 6: one thing I upgraded to polarized. Sorry about it.
- 8:25Speaker 8: Yeah, these are good not only for wearing, but also
- 8:28Speaker 8: out in the sun. When I become that baseball coach
- 8:30Speaker 8: I always want to be with my kids. I got
- 8:32Speaker 8: the Hatchers. They're darker, a little bit wider for my face.
- 8:36Speaker 8: They fit perfect, They're comfortable. It's an easy process to
- 8:39Speaker 8: order these really really cool glasses.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I am a die hard Warby Parker fan. I do
- 8:44Speaker 1: have prescription glasses and I wear Warby Parker every day
- 8:48Speaker 1: for many years. I'm excited about this one. Give it
- 8:50Speaker 1: a shot. Warby Parker gives you quality and better looking
- 8:53Speaker 1: prescription I wear at a fraction of the going price.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Our listeners get fifteen percent off plus free shipping when
- 8:59Speaker 1: they buy two or more of prescription glasses at Warbyparker
- 9:02Speaker 1: dot com slash foul. That's fifteen percent off when you
- 9:05Speaker 1: buy two pairs of glasses at wa r B y
- 9:08Speaker 1: Parker dot com slash foul. After you purchase, they will
- 9:12Speaker 1: ask you where you heard about them. Please support our
- 9:14Speaker 1: show and tell them foul Territory sent you. Let's get
- 9:18Speaker 1: to the support staff. So can you go over what
- 9:20Speaker 1: you did this offseason? And I asked this question nowadays,
- 9:24Speaker 1: because there are still free agents, is there any chance
- 9:26Speaker 1: that somebody else gets added to the mix, as you know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: prices changed this time of year.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean that's our job.
- 9:34Speaker 2: We're we're scouring every whether it's guys we GETDFAD or
- 9:37Speaker 2: minor league free agents or major league free agents that
- 9:39Speaker 2: are out there.
- 9:41Speaker 3: But again, like I was saying to AJ, it's the
- 9:43Speaker 3: core of our.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Success is going to be dictated by the guys that
- 9:46Speaker 2: we have here in camp. And yes, we're always looking
- 9:49Speaker 2: to add on the margins. And you saw us we
- 9:51Speaker 2: took an approach to this off season of really adding
- 9:54Speaker 2: some depth to our bullpen. We brought in three or
- 9:56Speaker 2: four different guys Sean Armstrong the key veteran, but three
- 9:59Speaker 2: or four different guys to help bolster our bullpen. But
- 10:02Speaker 2: this is going to come down to the young players
- 10:04Speaker 2: that we had, and the younger we got last year
- 10:06Speaker 2: towards the end of the year, the better we played. Right,
- 10:09Speaker 2: we struggled early on. We had signed a few veterans,
- 10:11Speaker 2: they didn't necessarily have the best first half of the season,
- 10:13Speaker 2: but we came back from a fifteen and a half
- 10:15Speaker 2: game deficit because we went young and we doubled down
- 10:19Speaker 2: on giving those young guys opportunities.
- 10:21Speaker 6: I'm going to go to one of your first playoff games.
- 10:25Speaker 6: Chase the latter gets to play in his first game.
- 10:27Speaker 6: You as somebody who is part of the decision making process.
- 10:32Speaker 6: I see him playing in that first game, and obviously
- 10:34Speaker 6: he drops the fly ball, and that's what people are
- 10:36Speaker 6: going to remember. You guys couldn't find him any at
- 10:40Speaker 6: bats in September, Like, there wasn't any Like what were those.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Conversations like, So, I don't know if you remember it.
- 10:48Speaker 2: He caught up his first flay ball really well though.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Oh man, that was the moment.
- 10:53Speaker 5: That was.
- 10:55Speaker 2: What I felt for him, and I felt for Voter
- 10:58Speaker 2: because Voter took a big leap of faith put him
- 11:00Speaker 2: out there. But Jason was unbelievable and how he bounced
- 11:02Speaker 2: back from that. Yeah, But it's so if you remember
- 11:06Speaker 2: Chase the season last year, he started the year he
- 11:08Speaker 2: had a core area of surgery that he just basically
- 11:12Speaker 2: a similar type of thing, right, So he wasn't back
- 11:14Speaker 2: to playing in Triple A until midway through the year.
- 11:16Speaker 2: He was just starting to get his feet underneath him
- 11:18Speaker 2: and build up his playing time, and then he had
- 11:20Speaker 2: a handmaid injury, so that set him back for another month,
- 11:23Speaker 2: and he was actually in Arizona. The guy had not
- 11:26Speaker 2: had live at bats against in game pitching since probably
- 11:31Speaker 2: July when he did the hanmdmate and he's taken, you know,
- 11:34Speaker 2: swings off of our traject machine and off of machines
- 11:38Speaker 2: out here, and he shows up and he plays in
- 11:40Speaker 2: that playoff game. So it's not that we couldn't find
- 11:42Speaker 2: it bats for him in September, it's that he had
- 11:44Speaker 2: had the handmads set back, and he did everything he
- 11:46Speaker 2: possibly could to put himself in a position to help us,
- 11:49Speaker 2: but he had to do that in a rehab setting.
- 11:51Speaker 2: And then a huge credit to him to be able
- 11:53Speaker 2: to just walk into a game and despite you know,
- 11:56Speaker 2: the sort of miss cue on the fly ball, had
- 11:58Speaker 2: one of the better at bats i've seen any of
- 12:00Speaker 2: our guys in his first playoff at bat right after that.
- 12:03Speaker 4: But you know, you were nervous, right, oh man. You
- 12:06Speaker 4: know we talked to a voter about it in the
- 12:08Speaker 4: same way drops the you guys like, what are we
- 12:10Speaker 4: the way, you know. But but it worked out.
- 12:13Speaker 2: One of the coolest things was Tanner Bibby's reaction to
- 12:15Speaker 2: it in the dugout. Tanner came up to him immediately
- 12:18Speaker 2: and said, put it past you, and just that I
- 12:20Speaker 2: can only imagine as a young player when you hear
- 12:23Speaker 2: that from a veteran picture who's out there busting his
- 12:26Speaker 2: tail off, and that just happened. For him to come
- 12:28Speaker 2: over there and put his arm around you and say,
- 12:29Speaker 2: don't sweat it, let's move past it.
- 12:31Speaker 3: That had a huge impact.
- 12:32Speaker 4: That you just called him a veteran. He's got like
- 12:34Speaker 4: three years back.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Right on our team.
- 12:35Speaker 4: That's the month in the big legs over the guy
- 12:40Speaker 4: who hadn't played a regular season game. All right. So
- 12:43Speaker 4: the one thing about the Guardians is they're known to
- 12:45Speaker 4: develop pictures. You guys are known to develop pictures. How
- 12:48Speaker 4: do you get the position player development to match the
- 12:53Speaker 4: picture developed.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, well, we have this reputation of developing pictures and
- 12:57Speaker 2: rightfully mean trusin crowds.
- 12:58Speaker 4: Let's us know all the time. He says, that's why
- 13:00Speaker 4: his career ended so quickly after being a Guardians, because
- 13:03Speaker 4: you guys didn't develop improperly.
- 13:05Speaker 2: That's not there you go, right, But we have we
- 13:08Speaker 2: have had waves where we've had similar types of position
- 13:11Speaker 2: player development. I mean, you know, you probably remember the
- 13:13Speaker 2: teams whe Jose Ramirez and Francisco Lindor and Jason Kipnis
- 13:17Speaker 2: and a lot of really strong young position players, and
- 13:20Speaker 2: we've we've sort of gone through waves. The current wave
- 13:23Speaker 2: and the group that we had to start the season
- 13:24Speaker 2: last year really scuffled offensively. That wasn't that's not the norm.
- 13:29Speaker 2: That was just the past year or two we have
- 13:30Speaker 2: scuffled offensively. I think what we're really optimistic about is,
- 13:34Speaker 2: like I said, the younger we got, the better we played.
- 13:37Speaker 2: We provided opportunities for Kyle Manzardo, Cjkafis, George Valera, P. D. Halp,
- 13:43Speaker 2: and some of these young guys that had been in
- 13:44Speaker 2: our system, and when we did that, our offense was
- 13:47Speaker 2: significantly better.
- 13:50Speaker 1: All Right, I got two for you to finish up here.
- 13:52Speaker 1: So one is a fan question, and we've had quite
- 13:55Speaker 1: a few of these while this is going on. They
- 13:57Speaker 1: want to know about Travis Bozana, chances of break camp,
- 14:00Speaker 1: just where he's at in general.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Yeah, we're excited about Travis's future. I mean, this is
- 14:05Speaker 2: a guy who we met with him pre draft before
- 14:09Speaker 2: we took him one to one. I've never met a
- 14:11Speaker 2: player in my twenty three years here with this type
- 14:15Speaker 2: of mindset. I mean, this guy is so focused on
- 14:18Speaker 2: improvement and getting the most out of his ability he
- 14:22Speaker 2: possibly can, and he showed that every step of the way.
- 14:24Speaker 2: He had a couple of injury setbacks last year with
- 14:27Speaker 2: his oblique that sort of slowed down his timeframe, but
- 14:30Speaker 2: when he was healthy, he was good and we're excited
- 14:32Speaker 2: about what his future can bring. He's, as you probably know,
- 14:36Speaker 2: he's going to go play in the WBC with Team Australia.
- 14:39Speaker 2: It was hugely important to him, even in thinking about
- 14:42Speaker 2: this several years ago, that if he had a chance
- 14:44Speaker 2: to represent his country, he would want to do that.
- 14:46Speaker 2: So that'll take him out of camp a little bit.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Once he gets back, we'll make sure we get him
- 14:50Speaker 2: in games see where things go.
- 14:52Speaker 3: And we don't ever set timetables on players, so.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Now you can't say he's coming up in twenty twenty six.
- 14:56Speaker 2: I mean, we are looking for great players to impact
- 14:59Speaker 2: our team, and.
- 15:00Speaker 4: It's the sets the GM talk.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Don't you don't know, Yes, my son dress of it
- 15:08Speaker 2: might just.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Rub off on all gms. As soon as they put
- 15:12Speaker 4: the corners of on, they all have the same talk
- 15:14Speaker 4: and the same lingo. It's amazing how the quarters have
- 15:17Speaker 4: just I love it.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Here's what we tell players. It's two things. One your
- 15:22Speaker 2: own readiness. You can control that. Two opportunity you can't
- 15:26Speaker 2: control that, right, So how does how we have to
- 15:29Speaker 2: help a player see that? Focus on what you can control,
- 15:33Speaker 2: that's your own readiness and the opportunity hopefully takes care
- 15:36Speaker 2: of itself. And whenever that opportunity is there, make sure
- 15:39Speaker 2: that you're as ready as you can to take over
- 15:40Speaker 2: that opportunity.
- 15:42Speaker 6: All right, Last one, no more on field stuff. Like
- 15:45Speaker 6: I said before, the people you hire in the environment
- 15:48Speaker 6: that you created is one of the best that I
- 15:50Speaker 6: was ever part of in an organization standpoint, how do
- 15:54Speaker 6: you guys deal with because that is your number one
- 15:57Speaker 6: priority that I saw when drafting guys, retaining guys, whatever
- 16:01Speaker 6: it is when you have a class A type of situation,
- 16:05Speaker 6: Because that's like for me, seeing that coming out of
- 16:08Speaker 6: the Guardians organization is like shocking to me if I
- 16:11Speaker 6: saw from other organizations. But how did you guys deal
- 16:14Speaker 6: with that? Because it's really tough for you guys to
- 16:16Speaker 6: go that far outside of something that you normally aren't doing.
- 16:21Speaker 2: It's a great point, Eric, I mean that hit us hard.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Look Colt, Like you said, we have to separate ourselves.
- 16:29Speaker 2: We can't do it with the economics. We have to
- 16:30Speaker 2: do it in other ways. And culture is such a
- 16:32Speaker 2: huge part of what we do.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Our scouts do.
- 16:34Speaker 2: A phenomenal job of understanding and learning the makeup of
- 16:37Speaker 2: each player, and we try to bring in great people,
- 16:39Speaker 2: not just great players. And we do the same thing
- 16:41Speaker 2: with coaches and scouts and whoever that we're bringing into
- 16:44Speaker 2: the organization, so we can separate ourselves with culture. And
- 16:46Speaker 2: when something like that happens, man, it's a knock to
- 16:49Speaker 2: the whole organization, obviously what it does on the field,
- 16:52Speaker 2: but also what it does off the field. I think
- 16:54Speaker 2: what I would say is how our guys bounce back
- 16:58Speaker 2: from something like that tells you everything you need to know.
- 17:01Speaker 2: I mean, our guys were pissed, they were not happy.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I'm sure you've talked to some.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Of our players.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Still, every time I read anything about it, I'm cringing.
- 17:08Speaker 2: It makes my stomach unspettled. Just to see some of
- 17:10Speaker 2: the stuff that's been written about and yet our guys
- 17:14Speaker 2: never gave up from the.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Date I give I give a Voter so much credit.
- 17:20Speaker 4: You know, obviously two time defending Manager of the Year.
- 17:22Speaker 4: But I went in and did a game for you
- 17:24Speaker 4: guys in Fox August Ish and I the question has
- 17:29Speaker 4: to come up. You hate asking the question, YEP, And
- 17:31Speaker 4: he says, listen, I had a meeting right after, and
- 17:33Speaker 4: our guys actually handled it. Not they used that as
- 17:37Speaker 4: a positive sid weady to do it without them and
- 17:40Speaker 4: show them that, you know, it wasn't all him, and
- 17:41Speaker 4: we're gonna and it actually kind of I don't want
- 17:43Speaker 4: to say galvanized it for a terrible situation, but it
- 17:46Speaker 4: brought you guys together, the players and Voter obviously did
- 17:49Speaker 4: a tremendous job making that.
- 17:52Speaker 3: I'll have no doubt about it. Voter is a huge
- 17:54Speaker 3: part of that.
- 17:54Speaker 2: From the day class was suspended to the end of
- 17:57Speaker 2: the season, we had the number one Bullpenny r and baseball,
- 18:00Speaker 2: which to me tells me everything.
- 18:02Speaker 3: He didn't need to know.
- 18:03Speaker 2: You lose the guy who is maybe the highest performing
- 18:05Speaker 2: closer in all baseball, and everybody just stepped up in
- 18:08Speaker 2: and performed even better. These are things we have to
- 18:13Speaker 2: deal with at our jobs. That's why I'm going gray
- 18:15Speaker 2: at such a young age.
- 18:16Speaker 4: It by the way, speaking of so he started as
- 18:18Speaker 4: an intern, Mike started as an intern and free right,
- 18:22Speaker 4: So you know who Dave Saint Peter is. Yeah, so
- 18:24Speaker 4: that you're like on the Dave Saint Peter track, right.
- 18:27Speaker 4: Dave Saint Peter was a guy with the Twins that
- 18:28Speaker 4: was started in the mailroom and he ended as president
- 18:31Speaker 4: of the Twins.
- 18:32Speaker 7: So Mike's going from intern.
- 18:34Speaker 4: He's at GM now. Now he's just got to get
- 18:37Speaker 4: Chris Antonetti, his crats, his buddy to step aside, and
- 18:40Speaker 4: then he can go to president of Baseball off.
- 18:42Speaker 3: And I've been trying to knock him off to the sacrom.
- 18:44Speaker 4: He just won't leave. You guys seem to have a
- 18:47Speaker 4: good relationship, so I think.
- 18:50Speaker 1: He's like, yeah, yeah, they've got a good thing going.
- 18:53Speaker 1: And see that's good. All the interns that reach out
- 18:55Speaker 1: all the time, you know you are it is important
- 18:59Speaker 1: making impression and then places will keep you and you'll rise.
- 19:03Speaker 7: It is.
- 19:03Speaker 1: It is a really good message for those trying to
- 19:05Speaker 1: get involved in the game. Really appreciate the time. Awesome
- 19:09Speaker 1: to get you for some time here in person, for
- 19:12Speaker 1: aj out of camp. Thanks for having us there for
- 19:14Speaker 1: the day and good luck this season.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Thank you guys, great talking with you.
- 19:20Speaker 4: We got the big rig here. Gavin Williams, you had
- 19:24Speaker 4: my muted Mark. Every time Mark touches something, it goes
- 19:29Speaker 4: to hell here. So just keep Mark away from everything,
- 19:32Speaker 4: okay in your life if you possible. Well, we got
- 19:34Speaker 4: the big rig here. Gavin Williams. You had an unbelievable
- 19:37Speaker 4: second half. If you didn't see Gavin Williams numbers last year,
- 19:41Speaker 4: check him out, boys and girls, because he had an
- 19:43Speaker 4: unbelievable season, almost to a no hitter, almost almost got
- 19:47Speaker 4: the We talked to you about it, and just an
- 19:50Speaker 4: unbelievable season for you, especially the second half. What I'm
- 19:54Speaker 4: just gonna dig what change?
- 19:56Speaker 5: Honestly starting from uh, I think it was the Giants series,
- 19:58Speaker 5: went in there on the off day to a pen,
- 20:00Speaker 5: worked on a little bit of delivery stuff, added the
- 20:03Speaker 5: cutter back. I think that's when we started throwing the
- 20:06Speaker 5: cutter a little bit more and then started the sinker
- 20:09Speaker 5: I think halfway right before the halfway point. Honestly, just
- 20:13Speaker 5: it opened up the holes one for me, open the
- 20:15Speaker 5: top opened the bottom outer half, helped.
- 20:18Speaker 6: Out a lot, Kevin, Was that the moment or was
- 20:23Speaker 6: that the second half that you were like, Oh, finally
- 20:26Speaker 6: I can hear people stop saying so much potential. He's
- 20:29Speaker 6: got so much potential. Was that annoying to you because
- 20:33Speaker 6: I never had anybody say that I had potential, So
- 20:36Speaker 6: I have no idea what that's like.
- 20:39Speaker 5: Honestly, I wasn't hearing that too much. I try to
- 20:42Speaker 5: stay off of social media as much as possible. I
- 20:44Speaker 5: don't really care what other people say or anything like that.
- 20:48Speaker 5: I try to do what I can do and what
- 20:50Speaker 5: I can control. At any point, you.
- 20:55Speaker 4: Mentioned like what you change and what you did we
- 20:57Speaker 4: started throwing strikes? Was that finely but not finally? But
- 21:01Speaker 4: it's not like you went out there. You know, every
- 21:03Speaker 4: person from little league to the big leagues just throw
- 21:06Speaker 4: a strike. It's not like you're not trying to throw
- 21:08Speaker 4: a strike. For sure, the mentality change. Did something change
- 21:11Speaker 4: in your mechanics?
- 21:12Speaker 5: I think I was just frustrated with myself at the beginning,
- 21:15Speaker 5: Like the first half, I would say, I was trying
- 21:17Speaker 5: to go through some delivery changes, and then it finally
- 21:19Speaker 5: clicked and that that one off day throwing the pen.
- 21:22Speaker 5: So I think when when it finally clicked, everything just
- 21:26Speaker 5: came together for me.
- 21:28Speaker 4: It happened like that, right, Yeah.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Honestly I did much needed.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Yeah, the voter didn't sit you down, Carl Willis didn't
- 21:35Speaker 4: sit you down. It was just inside yourself.
- 21:37Speaker 5: That And I think the All Star break really helped
- 21:40Speaker 5: me out with like a little reset that those four
- 21:42Speaker 5: days just get my mind away from the game. It
- 21:45Speaker 5: really helped out.
- 21:46Speaker 6: Are you competitive?
- 21:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I say so. I tried not to show it
- 21:52Speaker 5: as much. I don't want to get too frustrated with myself.
- 21:55Speaker 5: I think at times I try to be too perfect
- 21:57Speaker 5: with things, and I don't want to get too frustrated
- 22:02Speaker 5: with myself and bring it out where other people can.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Other people can see that.
- 22:06Speaker 6: Okay, because we see how we see how emotional Tanner
- 22:10Speaker 6: can get. Do you tell him to like relax because
- 22:12Speaker 6: we look at your demeanor and I assume you're really competitive?
- 22:16Speaker 6: Kind of rhetorical question. I assumed that. But you look
- 22:20Speaker 6: at his demeanor and he's like, wow, man, oh this
- 22:22Speaker 6: and that and everything, and then you talk to him
- 22:24Speaker 6: he's like, yeah, you know what, I'm just trying my best.
- 22:26Speaker 6: Do you calm him down or do you try to,
- 22:29Speaker 6: like prode the horse a little bit.
- 22:33Speaker 5: I think it's a little bit of both. Uh, everybody's different.
- 22:37Speaker 5: I try to get on him a little bit, try
- 22:39Speaker 5: to poke at him, stab at him with anything that
- 22:42Speaker 5: I can, uh, And most of the time he just
- 22:45Speaker 5: laughs at it with anything I say to him. Do
- 22:49Speaker 5: you guys have the biggest pitching staff in the league
- 22:52Speaker 5: like I was, and like Thigh, I think the whole
- 22:55Speaker 5: like staff period. We got some big bodies and on
- 22:58Speaker 5: the whole staff.
- 22:59Speaker 4: Yeah. Occasionally Goddess, Goddess just sat of here. You Biby's
- 23:04Speaker 4: not small. People will look at Biby be like he's
- 23:06Speaker 4: the little guy.
- 23:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Stuff.
- 23:08Speaker 5: I mean you got Sean Armstrong now, yeah, I mean Joey.
- 23:12Speaker 5: Joey's pretty big too. Yeah, I mean I got a
- 23:15Speaker 5: huge staff. You guys ever thought about picking up basketball?
- 23:18Speaker 5: I mean in the off season, clearly? I mean I
- 23:20Speaker 5: was a center in middle school, seventh grade center.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Middle school?
- 23:23Speaker 5: Yeah, one year.
- 23:26Speaker 1: What happened after that?
- 23:28Speaker 5: No, not at all. He played a couple of games
- 23:33Speaker 5: and I was out.
- 23:34Speaker 7: That was it.
- 23:35Speaker 1: So you didn't do high school? And were you bigger
- 23:37Speaker 1: than everyone in middle school? And then I will no
- 23:39Speaker 1: one ever really catches up bigger than everybody.
- 23:42Speaker 5: I know, I was not bigger than everybody in middle school.
- 23:45Speaker 5: I was like the little guy. I was like five foot,
- 23:48Speaker 5: four hundred pounds. It looked like I was like a
- 23:49Speaker 5: little bowling ball. So when did your height hit, like
- 23:52Speaker 5: junior or high school? Did you go like six eight inches, yeah,
- 23:55Speaker 5: something like that. I think it was like six foot gone, yeah,
- 23:57Speaker 5: six seventh. It was like six foot going in the
- 23:59Speaker 5: high school, and then by the end of it was
- 24:01Speaker 5: like six sixty five sixty six.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Oh wow. And then is that when you started getting
- 24:05Speaker 4: recruited and all that. Yeah, honestly I started getting recruited
- 24:10Speaker 4: sophomore you're high school, but I was playing different positions
- 24:13Speaker 4: obviously didn't finally hit I think it was ninety four
- 24:17Speaker 4: y five on the gun, and that ended all the
- 24:18Speaker 4: other positions.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Yeah, worked out for me.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Yeah, when you're six five and you throw ninety five.
- 24:25Speaker 4: He went, he went to the rig went to East Carolina.
- 24:29Speaker 4: I have to go to East Carolina in a couple
- 24:31Speaker 4: of weeks. My son plays at UAB Okay, so I
- 24:34Speaker 4: know this is way off topics. The best place ever.
- 24:36Speaker 4: You'll have fun East Carolina. Yeah, okay, go to the
- 24:38Speaker 4: jungle South. So, Okay, where do I eat though?
- 24:42Speaker 5: I mean, what do you want to eat? Good anything?
- 24:46Speaker 5: There's a hole in the wall. It's called Bee's Barbecue.
- 24:49Speaker 5: I got to get there pretty early though. Insane barbecue.
- 24:52Speaker 5: Love it. Obviously you got the staple sub Dogs. Everybody's
- 24:56Speaker 5: got to go to sub Dogs. Yeah, get a get
- 25:00Speaker 5: a few adult beverages if you want. Yes, I don't
- 25:02Speaker 5: know if I can say that, but I don't care.
- 25:04Speaker 5: You can say whatever you want.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Get a couple of those and have.
- 25:07Speaker 4: A good day, okay, and then go to the jungle.
- 25:09Speaker 5: Go to the jungle.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Get on me if I'm wearing. It's just helping who
- 25:13Speaker 4: you are. Yeah, I'm not going to walk around, but
- 25:16Speaker 4: we're Gavin Williams Jersey where they know who I am?
- 25:18Speaker 4: Or Tray you.
- 25:19Speaker 5: Savage, Tray you Savage. They might jump on your back
- 25:22Speaker 5: for that thing.
- 25:24Speaker 6: That's what I was gonna ask. That's what I was
- 25:25Speaker 6: gonna ask. Now, obviously college baseball just started. You sit there.
- 25:30Speaker 6: I assume you at least check on some of the
- 25:32Speaker 6: game scores. Do you follow a guy like Trey You
- 25:35Speaker 6: Savage or or some of your ex teammates that are
- 25:38Speaker 6: playing in the league, and you go okay. I kind
- 25:42Speaker 6: of like it when they do well, even not against us,
- 25:46Speaker 6: but I like watching them and like pay attention to
- 25:49Speaker 6: where they're at.
- 25:50Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure, I'm always watching any kind of easy
- 25:53Speaker 5: you guys and checking up and checking up on them, uh,
- 25:56Speaker 5: seeing how how they're doing. I mean, opens up the
- 25:59Speaker 5: mat for easty you and shows guys that there's products
- 26:02Speaker 5: that come out of you.
- 26:02Speaker 4: See you by the way you see how they did
- 26:04Speaker 4: this weekend?
- 26:05Speaker 5: That terrible. Yep, I don't want to talk about it.
- 26:06Speaker 4: One of my best friend's kids plays at Zavy. We
- 26:08Speaker 4: had a great weekend really, so we won't talk. We
- 26:11Speaker 4: want to talk about good place.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Yeah, you're keeping up. You're a big college baseball fan,
- 26:21Speaker 1: and if so, like where where do you think the
- 26:23Speaker 1: game is at right now? Like the state of college baseball?
- 26:27Speaker 5: Honestly, I think it's a good point. I think that
- 26:29Speaker 5: I think the game is growing in all aspects. I
- 26:32Speaker 5: think there's so many more people watching the game now,
- 26:34Speaker 5: and I mean you bring in the pitchclock and more
- 26:37Speaker 5: people are watching because games are going by quicker. So
- 26:41Speaker 5: I think it's at a good point right now.
- 26:43Speaker 1: I agree. And do you think the money helps? I
- 26:45Speaker 1: mean Seriously, guys have a lot more reason to stay,
- 26:49Speaker 1: and for some of them, if the financial reasons are important,
- 26:52Speaker 1: they can maybe wait a year to get the big
- 26:55Speaker 1: signing bonus from the draft.
- 26:57Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure. I think money play is a lot
- 27:00Speaker 5: in anything. Really. I think anytime you get paid doing anything,
- 27:04Speaker 5: everybody's going to stick around and try to stay as
- 27:06Speaker 5: long as possible.
- 27:07Speaker 3: How much did you get zero?
- 27:10Speaker 5: I wish I got paid.
- 27:12Speaker 1: I wish it wasn't there yet, right, did you just
- 27:15Speaker 1: miss it the cutoff?
- 27:19Speaker 6: How much have you gotten now? Though this is this
- 27:22Speaker 6: is the game that everybody plays, like, how much would
- 27:24Speaker 6: you have gotten? As in the fact that you were
- 27:26Speaker 6: a first rounder they would have won. Did you keep
- 27:28Speaker 6: you around? Were you loyal to ECU? Because I heard
- 27:32Speaker 6: the guys who aren't loyal to the school, they're the
- 27:34Speaker 6: ones that get to pay the most because they're like,
- 27:36Speaker 6: I'm gone, I'm going to the highest bidder.
- 27:39Speaker 5: Yeah, loyalty right now isn't a thing. It's whoever is
- 27:43Speaker 5: going to get the most money. And I'd say I
- 27:46Speaker 5: was pretty loyal to you. See you. I bleed purple
- 27:49Speaker 5: and golden. I love it. I live I live there
- 27:51Speaker 5: in the all season now I go back there and
- 27:52Speaker 5: work out. I try to do as much as possible
- 27:56Speaker 5: for them and I I don't think there's a doll
- 28:00Speaker 5: figure for me to stay there. I loved it so much.
- 28:05Speaker 5: That's awesome.
- 28:05Speaker 1: They can backpay too, if they want. They can backpay
- 28:08Speaker 1: you a little bit.
- 28:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 28:10Speaker 5: Maybe for the back pay, I got like nine dollars.
- 28:15Speaker 7: My bad.
- 28:15Speaker 4: There you go. Hey, there it is work out stuff, right.
- 28:19Speaker 5: Yeah, try to get a little bit more next time.
- 28:22Speaker 4: That's fair. That's fair. By the way, he's from he's
- 28:24Speaker 4: from Cape Fear, and I have to know. I have
- 28:28Speaker 4: to know he's from Cape Fear, North Carolina. There's a
- 28:31Speaker 4: there was a very famous movie. Have you seen Kate
- 28:33Speaker 4: Fear of the movie?
- 28:34Speaker 5: I have not.
- 28:35Speaker 4: You've never seen that.
- 28:36Speaker 5: Not a big movie guy.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Oh yeah, but it's about the town you're from.
- 28:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm not a Well, there was one in.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Like the sixties, but they remade it like hold on.
- 28:45Speaker 4: I was just looking at ninety one with de Niro.
- 28:47Speaker 4: You know where Robert de Niro is. No, God, I
- 28:50Speaker 4: think it's pretty bad. I don't know many actors anyways,
- 28:54Speaker 4: watch it first.
- 28:55Speaker 1: I was born in ninety nine.
- 28:57Speaker 4: No, I know what's still like? People go back Man's
- 29:00Speaker 4: Morning two thousand and seven, and he's going back and
- 29:02Speaker 4: watching like all the top one hundred listed movies. You know,
- 29:05Speaker 4: so I figure, but if there was a movie made
- 29:08Speaker 4: about my hometown, I would watch it just to know
- 29:10Speaker 4: what people thought of my hometown.
- 29:13Speaker 7: You gotta rent it.
- 29:14Speaker 1: It's not on I'm looking for you now, It's not
- 29:17Speaker 1: on any of the platforms. It looks I mean it is,
- 29:19Speaker 1: but you gotta rent it.
- 29:20Speaker 5: It's like AVD.
- 29:23Speaker 1: It's basically like I mean ninety one. He knows a DVD.
- 29:26Speaker 1: No de Niro, but a DVD he's got. You gotta
- 29:29Speaker 1: rent it.
- 29:30Speaker 5: Do they even make v players more?
- 29:32Speaker 4: I have one you can buy, though.
- 29:34Speaker 5: I don't want to buy it.
- 29:38Speaker 6: You don't watch. You don't you don't watch movies? What
- 29:41Speaker 6: do you do? What's your What I watch?
- 29:45Speaker 5: I watched seq one ever heard of it? So it's
- 29:48Speaker 5: Lee Ellis hunting hunt channel on YouTube. Pretty awesome. I
- 29:52Speaker 5: love it.
- 29:54Speaker 6: So you would live and breathe hunting if you weren't pitching,
- 29:57Speaker 6: you would You would hunt and hunt until you can't
- 30:00Speaker 6: hunt anymore.
- 30:01Speaker 5: For sure, I would do the same thing he's he's doing.
- 30:05Speaker 5: Get all the cameras, a little crew and go out.
- 30:08Speaker 1: And do that, so he'd be a creator influencer.
- 30:11Speaker 5: I try to do you try to I would try
- 30:16Speaker 5: to if Yeah, I just bought my first belt, so
- 30:21Speaker 5: I'm trying to get Matthew's car thirty four, so I'm
- 30:24Speaker 5: trying to get into that. But usually just gun.
- 30:26Speaker 4: Okay, favorite thing.
- 30:30Speaker 7: Uh.
- 30:31Speaker 5: I went hog hunting for the first time this all season,
- 30:34Speaker 5: like thermals and stuff. That was that was pretty sick.
- 30:37Speaker 5: But deer duck on those are my my two go tos.
- 30:41Speaker 4: Listen, I love it. Yeah, I do it. I've done it.
- 30:47Speaker 4: You gotta get Yeah, it's it's a different it's a
- 30:50Speaker 4: different it's a different animal.
- 30:52Speaker 5: That's what I heard. Try to get into that.
- 30:55Speaker 4: But when you're when you're retired, you have plenty of
- 30:57Speaker 4: time to do it.
- 30:58Speaker 5: Do it all the time, absolutely.
- 31:00Speaker 1: All right, bad thing, yeah, Gavin. When so you've got
- 31:02Speaker 1: whatever ten years like whatever you want to do left
- 31:05Speaker 1: and then you hit us up and we'll help you
- 31:07Speaker 1: set up the YouTube channel.
- 31:09Speaker 5: Perfect y'all. Y'all got all the gameras it looks like
- 31:12Speaker 5: right here.
- 31:12Speaker 1: And we've got to figure it out. Yeah, so hit
- 31:15Speaker 1: us up. Well, we'll be following in the meantime. But
- 31:18Speaker 1: good luck.
- 31:18Speaker 4: Thanks having one more question, Hold on before you goes
- 31:20Speaker 4: to have one more question. We had my churn off
- 31:23Speaker 4: sit down here. Okay, right, we've had relievers. Are the
- 31:26Speaker 4: first starter we've had here so far. Who's the opening
- 31:29Speaker 4: day starter?
- 31:30Speaker 5: Whoever they want to be, doesn't matter who it is
- 31:33Speaker 5: it matter to you, doesn't matter as long as that
- 31:36Speaker 5: pitch doesn't matter. I want to win games, that's all.
- 31:38Speaker 5: That's all that matters to me.
- 31:39Speaker 4: But Bibby, if it was Biby, if it was you,
- 31:42Speaker 4: or whoever.
- 31:42Speaker 5: It was Joe La doesn't matter all right.
- 31:45Speaker 4: I forgot we had slate too, so I guess sleep.
- 31:47Speaker 5: Laser or the starter. Yeah, win's a win to me.
- 31:50Speaker 5: Doesn't matter where you pitch as long as you win.
- 31:53Speaker 4: Okay, that's fair.
- 31:54Speaker 5: I think we all got one goal in our minds,
- 31:56Speaker 5: and that's the win a World Series. Doesn't matter matter
- 31:59Speaker 5: how you get there.
- 32:01Speaker 1: And make it a little easier on yourselves this year.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Don't do the whole Oh we're gonna be fifteen and
- 32:05Speaker 1: a half back and then we're just gonna dance our
- 32:08Speaker 1: way right back to the division again.
- 32:10Speaker 5: We're not talking the fun part.
- 32:12Speaker 1: But yeah, you did make it fun. That story was crazy. Dude,
- 32:15Speaker 1: we're looking We're like, oh look Cleveland. Now they're eight
- 32:17Speaker 1: and a half. Oh they're set. Whoa. That was incredible.
- 32:21Speaker 1: It was really fun to watch. I mean, you know
- 32:23Speaker 1: sometimes that the races can get a little slow and
- 32:25Speaker 1: boring if teams are way ahead. But now I'm going
- 32:27Speaker 1: to look at them differently because of you guys.
- 32:29Speaker 5: For sure. I mean that that was a fun time
- 32:32Speaker 5: just sitting in the dugout watching it. I mean, you
- 32:37Speaker 5: get ten games back, you get five games back, and
- 32:39Speaker 5: it's like, oh, we're actually about to do this. I mean,
- 32:42Speaker 5: I have no words for it, but it was. It
- 32:44Speaker 5: was awesome to watch.
- 32:46Speaker 1: It was really cool, some awesome memories. Well, Gavin, thanks
- 32:48Speaker 1: for joining us.
- 32:49Speaker 7: Man.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Really appreciate it. Good chatting with you, and we'll see
- 32:52Speaker 1: you during the season.
- 32:53Speaker 5: Yeah, I appreciate you all having me. I'm gonna let him
- 32:56Speaker 5: introduce himself here, just slay.
- 33:00Speaker 4: We've had on before, right, But he just he went
- 33:02Speaker 4: to shake my hand and I just need him to
- 33:04Speaker 4: go pick a no, no, not your left hand, your
- 33:06Speaker 4: right hand on dirty.
- 33:07Speaker 9: This thing is I just got straight off the field
- 33:10Speaker 9: on dirty like hey, but he touched it.
- 33:12Speaker 7: It isn't sticky spider.
- 33:16Speaker 6: Is that is that the Guardian? Is that what it is?
- 33:20Speaker 7: From a couple of moons ago? Maybe? But it was uh,
- 33:23Speaker 7: it was uh the hair Joel.
- 33:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it was.
- 33:26Speaker 7: It was beard bomb. That's why I started growing one.
- 33:29Speaker 4: Out Delaware mud. Yeah. But he went to shake my hand.
- 33:34Speaker 4: I'm like, I'm not touching that thing dirty.
- 33:37Speaker 7: It is sanitized.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Allegedly that's worse. Actually, that just moves the germs around
- 33:41Speaker 4: instead of actually killing.
- 33:43Speaker 7: You're talking about being an old time when you're worried
- 33:45Speaker 7: about germs.
- 33:47Speaker 4: I don't want no flu from you. It was on
- 33:50Speaker 4: that ball house camp going so far. We were just
- 33:53Speaker 4: talking about stretching. We saw you guys out here stretching.
- 33:56Speaker 4: Did you do anything today other than stretch your days over?
- 33:59Speaker 7: Uh?
- 34:00Speaker 9: I stretched, I threw, I did a little shadow work
- 34:04Speaker 9: on the mound, and now I'm here and then I
- 34:06Speaker 9: go home. It's pretty easy for the first you know,
- 34:09Speaker 9: first few weeks you should have been pittocrats.
- 34:12Speaker 4: I mean, think about it. It's eleven o'clock. He's like,
- 34:15Speaker 4: I'm already done, and then it get on the field
- 34:17Speaker 4: till nine thirty.
- 34:19Speaker 9: Yeah, it's I mean the days where you don't get
- 34:22Speaker 9: on the mound as a picture. It's kind of like
- 34:23Speaker 9: you gotta find stuff to do. That's why so many
- 34:25Speaker 9: of us like playing cards just killed time.
- 34:29Speaker 6: I mean I always asked this position players wish we're
- 34:32Speaker 6: over at Royals camp yesterday and we talked to Jack
- 34:36Speaker 6: Cagle one who threw a hundred from the left side,
- 34:38Speaker 6: and it's like, do you ever look at pictures and go, man,
- 34:41Speaker 6: their life must suck. Do you ever look at position
- 34:43Speaker 6: players and go, man, their life must suck. They have
- 34:46Speaker 6: to do all this stuff that doesn't doesn't look as
- 34:49Speaker 6: fun as being a picture.
- 34:51Speaker 9: I think it looks more fun than being a picture,
- 34:53Speaker 9: but it's way more difficult.
- 34:54Speaker 7: It's way more fun.
- 34:55Speaker 9: But it's also like I'm impressed every day with what
- 34:58Speaker 9: some of these guys can do. Like I watched these
- 35:00Speaker 9: guys turn around Hunter moin our heaters, like on day one,
- 35:04Speaker 9: It's like, how how are you?
- 35:05Speaker 7: How do you show up ready to do that? But
- 35:07Speaker 7: they're just built different.
- 35:08Speaker 5: Now do you?
- 35:09Speaker 4: What do you do? Then it's eleven o'clock, you're gonna
- 35:11Speaker 4: go in, You're gonna I'm assuming you're gonna take a shower.
- 35:13Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I stick around here for a while.
- 35:14Speaker 9: I like watching the bullpens, watching the live vps. I'm
- 35:18Speaker 9: still a self proclaimed pitching nerd, so I like looking
- 35:21Speaker 9: at all the metrics on everything.
- 35:22Speaker 4: You have a trash talker, do you sit behind like
- 35:24Speaker 4: the same vps and your boys are out there?
- 35:26Speaker 9: I don't know, Oh yeah, I'll say yes, be it
- 35:29Speaker 9: on a on a check swing like I'm I'm playing umpire.
- 35:32Speaker 4: Ticket or you like I got you?
- 35:33Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah, they yell when they hit homers. I got
- 35:37Speaker 7: a yelling. I guy punches somebody out.
- 35:38Speaker 4: Okay, I can live with that art then, so you're
- 35:41Speaker 4: out of here by eleven thirty. Then after all that
- 35:44Speaker 4: nonsense is done, So then what.
- 35:46Speaker 7: Usually I would try to fish?
- 35:48Speaker 9: I do that Arizona exactly. If you want to go
- 35:51Speaker 9: catch karp, you can go to the community pond with
- 35:53Speaker 9: some bread. But like that gets old pretty quick.
- 35:55Speaker 7: You know. I've tried a few times.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Hyaking on your Instagram and all that.
- 35:59Speaker 7: I don't have the kayak out here.
- 36:00Speaker 9: If I did, i'd be going going down the Salt
- 36:02Speaker 9: River a couple of times a week.
- 36:04Speaker 7: But it's a lot to ship that thing out.
- 36:08Speaker 4: There's like a Dicks over there.
- 36:09Speaker 7: Yeah, but then they got to sell it before I
- 36:11Speaker 7: leave or bring it with me, and.
- 36:13Speaker 4: You're smart, you can just leave it here and next
- 36:14Speaker 4: year you use the same one.
- 36:16Speaker 7: You This is a veteran right here.
- 36:18Speaker 4: Florida, Florida, Miami.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Hang it on, Miami.
- 36:24Speaker 7: Isn't Miami? Isn't it's own like place?
- 36:31Speaker 6: When you when you watch up.
- 36:32Speaker 4: School, public school?
- 36:34Speaker 7: Oh yeah, whatever, that's private.
- 36:38Speaker 4: Come on, I didn't go there, doctor Phillips.
- 36:40Speaker 7: Maybe they went to doctor Phillips.
- 36:42Speaker 4: No, I went to you.
- 36:43Speaker 7: Okay, okay, Harvard, Correctly, it's.
- 36:48Speaker 4: More like Harvard Princeton combined of the cell.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Got it, Orlando.
- 36:54Speaker 6: When you watch when you're your day is done, Your
- 36:56Speaker 6: day is done. Now we already hit on that plenty.
- 36:59Speaker 6: When you's the minor leaguers, which are all the dudes
- 37:01Speaker 6: that are walking by to the clover leaf, do you say, man,
- 37:07Speaker 6: I want to tell those guys what? Like, what's the
- 37:10Speaker 6: one thing you'd want to tell them now that you
- 37:12Speaker 6: are an established big leaguer.
- 37:16Speaker 9: I would say, be excited when you fail. Get excited
- 37:22Speaker 9: by failure, because baseball is a game of failure, and
- 37:25Speaker 9: the longer you play it, the more you're going to fail.
- 37:28Speaker 9: And every time you fail, that's just another opportunity for
- 37:30Speaker 9: you to learn something that's going to make you better
- 37:32Speaker 9: the next time you play.
- 37:34Speaker 7: So I think that's the biggest thing.
- 37:38Speaker 4: By the way, I prouds. I have to say this.
- 37:41Speaker 4: You mentioned the minor leaguers walking by, So the big
- 37:44Speaker 4: leaguers here have different jerseys, so he doesn't have his jersey,
- 37:46Speaker 4: but it's a clear difference on the back right, which
- 37:50Speaker 4: is fine. But I didn't know that my is minor
- 37:52Speaker 4: league camp already started.
- 37:54Speaker 7: I don't think it's officially okay kicking off.
- 37:58Speaker 4: Because it's very obvious who are the big leaguers and
- 38:01Speaker 4: newer the support players, which is the minor league guys
- 38:05Speaker 4: here for big league camp. Because even when you guys
- 38:07Speaker 4: were stretching, you're like, this side was big leaguers, that
- 38:09Speaker 4: side was different.
- 38:11Speaker 9: It's like the full like lettering and then the white
- 38:13Speaker 9: lettering is what they do. I know some teams do
- 38:14Speaker 9: like gray pants white pants. I think it's more of
- 38:17Speaker 9: just an organizational thing.
- 38:18Speaker 4: Looking like a higher round upon them. Well, no, before
- 38:21Speaker 4: you talk to somebody, you say.
- 38:23Speaker 7: Oh on, let me see waiting, do you have no?
- 38:26Speaker 7: I wore that lettering for a lot longer enough one
- 38:28Speaker 7: than the new lettering.
- 38:29Speaker 1: So, hey, when'd you work on this offseason? What's your
- 38:35Speaker 1: relationship like with your pitching repertoire heading into camp.
- 38:40Speaker 9: Yeah, I don't think you're going to see as many
- 38:42Speaker 9: big differences as you saw last year with my not
- 38:45Speaker 9: only rep so I wrote my mechanics, everything's going to
- 38:48Speaker 9: look very similar. We worked on sharpening up some of
- 38:52Speaker 9: the off speed, just as you're probably gonna hear every
- 38:56Speaker 9: picture say at this point, sharpening their secondary stuff and
- 38:59Speaker 9: looking to get more more chase and more and more
- 39:02Speaker 9: weak contact with that stuff, and also sharpening up the
- 39:07Speaker 9: attack plan and figuring out what are my weak contact
- 39:11Speaker 9: pitches that I use early in the accunts, what are
- 39:13Speaker 9: my whift pitches that I use late in the counts.
- 39:15Speaker 9: Trying to paint that picture because last year was a
- 39:17Speaker 9: lot of trial and error for me because I had
- 39:19Speaker 9: so much, so much new stuff going into the years.
- 39:22Speaker 9: Now that we have so much data on you know,
- 39:25Speaker 9: my success and my failure from last year, it's going
- 39:27Speaker 9: to be an easier picture to paint this year.
- 39:32Speaker 6: Do you feel like you're able to blend enough of
- 39:35Speaker 6: the you said, self proclaimed baseball nerd blend what you're
- 39:39Speaker 6: seeing in your pitch shapes to where their swing plan
- 39:44Speaker 6: is or what you're seeing in game, or when it
- 39:47Speaker 6: you're not seeing it in game, does it just oh crap,
- 39:50Speaker 6: just got to go off the rails and try to
- 39:52Speaker 6: figure it out.
- 39:54Speaker 7: The simple answer is absolutely not. I'm not that good.
- 39:57Speaker 9: I wish I was, but no, when I get on
- 39:59Speaker 9: the mound, I have to compete and I have to
- 40:01Speaker 9: work with what I got that day, and I got
- 40:03Speaker 9: to trust my catchers are going to make those adjustments
- 40:08Speaker 9: for me. If they see that my cutters really sharp
- 40:11Speaker 9: and maybe my sinker is a little flat, they're gonna
- 40:13Speaker 9: talk to me between innings and say, hey, we're gonna
- 40:15Speaker 9: we're gonna call it cutter more and we're gonna go
- 40:17Speaker 9: to spin if my sinkers really sink in and my
- 40:19Speaker 9: four seams really right, and it's like, hey, we might go.
- 40:22Speaker 9: We might go a little firmer than the attack plan
- 40:24Speaker 9: said today. And my job is just to throw the
- 40:26Speaker 9: ball where they put the glove, and you know, execute
- 40:31Speaker 9: what they asked me to execute.
- 40:34Speaker 4: What's your what's your relationship? As far as Kate Smith,
- 40:39Speaker 4: I want to throw your four seam fastball right, yeah, Biby,
- 40:42Speaker 4: I want to throw your off speed pitches. Do you
- 40:44Speaker 4: go to those guys and say, hey, how do you
- 40:46Speaker 4: throw that? How do you hold it? And can you
- 40:48Speaker 4: help me shape my pitches? Differently, not only Carl Willis,
- 40:51Speaker 4: who's obviously been a pitching coach, I feel like for
- 40:54Speaker 4: like fifty years.
- 40:55Speaker 7: Right, Well, it's actually I think he's actually pretty close
- 40:57Speaker 7: to that.
- 41:00Speaker 4: Up to me and gave me a hug, and I said, Carl,
- 41:02Speaker 4: why do people talk so good about you? And He's like, well,
- 41:05Speaker 4: you were an asshole. They say bad things about you.
- 41:07Speaker 4: I was like, I can't figure it out. But he's
- 41:11Speaker 4: been doing this forever, so you can go to him.
- 41:12Speaker 4: Do you go to your other pitchers? Do you go
- 41:14Speaker 4: to who do you go to when you say, oh,
- 41:16Speaker 4: I want to work on you know, your two seamer
- 41:18Speaker 4: or four seemer.
- 41:19Speaker 9: I think personally, I try to find guys that match
- 41:23Speaker 9: my profile of pitch and mechanics, like I naturally pronate,
- 41:28Speaker 9: So I wouldn't go to Biby to ask him about
- 41:30Speaker 9: how I throw something because he's a natural supernat So
- 41:33Speaker 9: we're gonna the ball is gonna come out of our hand. Differently,
- 41:36Speaker 9: Cad Smith is Cad Smith. Nobody can do what he
- 41:39Speaker 9: does with the baseball. But I can't still ask those
- 41:42Speaker 9: guys questions about the metal game or about their preparation routines.
- 41:46Speaker 9: If I were to go trying to find like a
- 41:49Speaker 9: pitch or a movement profile that I want to like,
- 41:51Speaker 9: I try to find somebody that matches my delivery a
- 41:54Speaker 9: little bit closer, and then I can work on, Okay,
- 41:57Speaker 9: how do you manipulate.
- 41:58Speaker 7: The baseball based on how you move? How you do this?
- 42:02Speaker 9: But there's certainly things you can learn from everybody. I mean,
- 42:04Speaker 9: everybody has their specialty areas in this game where they
- 42:08Speaker 9: excel and maybe it might not be like a direct
- 42:11Speaker 9: correlation to me, but I can learn something from them
- 42:15Speaker 9: that will apply to me.
- 42:17Speaker 6: It's like you're watching your team. I'm sure you guys
- 42:20Speaker 6: have a group thread. Did you guys send messages to
- 42:23Speaker 6: each other when other teams keep signing guys? Or you
- 42:27Speaker 6: just are you resident to the fact that you know
- 42:29Speaker 6: what guardians are going to be, who we are. We're
- 42:32Speaker 6: just gonna play and you know the team that we
- 42:34Speaker 6: have on the field is the team? Or do you
- 42:36Speaker 6: get a little jealous that the biggest move was just
- 42:40Speaker 6: an extension for Hosey.
- 42:44Speaker 9: I think that group that especially like I mean the
- 42:47Speaker 9: whole team last year, but especially that September group became
- 42:51Speaker 9: so close through what we accomplished and going into the offseason.
- 42:57Speaker 9: We were pretty excited when we found out that that
- 43:00Speaker 9: group was going to be the team that we went
- 43:02Speaker 9: with next year because we bonded so tightly. We formed
- 43:07Speaker 9: really really close relationships, and the banter day one was there.
- 43:12Speaker 9: The jokes are flying, the focus is intense. So I
- 43:16Speaker 9: don't think any we we didn't have any conversations about it.
- 43:18Speaker 9: We were just excited that the same group of guys
- 43:21Speaker 9: that brought us to a division title we're going to
- 43:23Speaker 9: be back in the locker room.
- 43:26Speaker 4: I like it.
- 43:26Speaker 7: Like it.
- 43:27Speaker 4: Before we let you go, I have to ask, we
- 43:30Speaker 4: need to we need to for shot. Oh gosh, So
- 43:35Speaker 4: Scott went to Miami, like yes, yes. The other day
- 43:40Speaker 4: we had Trisha Whittaker on Okay, used to be the
- 43:43Speaker 4: Race Silent. She does Apple TV. I don't know if
- 43:45Speaker 4: you've met her yet, I don't think so. But she
- 43:47Speaker 4: went to Indiana. Okay, I see it's over from the
- 43:50Speaker 4: Indiana football game.
- 43:52Speaker 7: So Tim Herron is an Indiana Hoosier. C J.
- 43:59Speaker 9: We got we got more Miami guys. So I mean
- 44:02Speaker 9: Tim has been good about it. He's you know, do
- 44:05Speaker 9: you guys have a bet? Did you make We didn't
- 44:07Speaker 9: have a bet. No, he didn't. He didn't wear us
- 44:09Speaker 9: out too much about it. I know j jir travel
- 44:11Speaker 9: secretary wore some Indiana stuff and gave me a little
- 44:14Speaker 9: crap day on.
- 44:15Speaker 7: But they've taken it well.
- 44:18Speaker 9: I think they embody that Kurt Signetti mentality of let
- 44:22Speaker 9: your let you're on the field stuff do the talking.
- 44:24Speaker 7: You know, I would have football, oh Miami. I mean
- 44:32Speaker 7: it would have been.
- 44:33Speaker 9: It would have been a circus in the best way possible,
- 44:35Speaker 9: and I would have been I would have been a
- 44:37Speaker 9: big part of it because I love it, you know.
- 44:40Speaker 4: Off the difference is the Kurt signetty hard working, keep
- 44:43Speaker 4: your mouth shut, do your job, Miami.
- 44:47Speaker 7: It's hard working. We just don't keep our mouth shut.
