- 0:10Speaker 1: Zach Nagy on Go247 covering LSU football. Zach, how you doing, bud?
- 0:15Speaker 2: Doing good, man. Obviously kind of a crazy time for
- 0:17Speaker 2: LSU coming off that brutal loss, but opportunity to bounce back.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Got Mississippi State this weekend. Excited about it.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It's been a crazy time for the last year, I
- 0:26Speaker 1: feel like. There hasn't been a time where it hasn't
- 0:29Speaker 1: been insane. Let's talk a little big picture. Yeah, just
- 0:34Speaker 1: thoughts coming off of that Kentucky loss. Obviously, LSU's second
- 0:37Speaker 1: loss of the season. The margin becomes razor thin, and
- 0:40Speaker 1: the schedule doesn't get a whole heck of a lot
- 0:42Speaker 1: easier going the rest of the way. When you look
- 0:46Speaker 1: at what they'll have to face this season, there's certainly
- 0:49Speaker 1: more challenging weeks than than others, but with Texas and
- 0:52Speaker 1: Bama and Mississippi state this weekend, is this a team
- 0:57Speaker 1: that you are confident in can go on a run
- 1:00Speaker 1: here at the end of the year to still maybe
- 1:02Speaker 1: make the playoff or is it have expectations, not big picture,
- 1:06Speaker 1: but just for the rest of this year, maybe changed
- 1:09Speaker 1: a little bit to where it's like, man, let's, let's
- 1:12Speaker 1: see how this thing kind of pans out in year one.
- 1:14Speaker 2: It's a fair question. I mean, I think everybody has
- 1:17Speaker 2: different perspectives. For me, I think this team's a couple
- 1:20Speaker 2: plays away from really being 6-0. I think if you
- 1:23Speaker 2: didn't have the slow starts that you had against Ole
- 1:25Speaker 2: Miss and finished kind of poorly and have undisciplined football
- 1:29Speaker 2: against Kentucky, I think you'd be in a really good spot.
- 1:31Speaker 2: But needless to say, they didn't, and they're having some
- 1:33Speaker 2: growing pains. And that's what we're seeing firsthand, right, is
- 1:36Speaker 2: just a brutal loss to Ole Miss where 24-7 at halftime,
- 1:40Speaker 2: bounce back, kind of got in there, and you folded late.
- 1:44Speaker 2: with Trinidad Chambliss making that play with around six minutes
- 1:46Speaker 2: left to go in the game. And then you could
- 1:48Speaker 2: look at this Kentucky game where you started off with
- 1:50Speaker 2: some really undisciplined football, and it bit you in the
- 1:52Speaker 2: tail when the kind of going got tough at the end.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And the soft coverage is just something that's really tough
- 1:58Speaker 2: to swallow just watching. But to answer your question, man,
- 2:02Speaker 2: when you look at the big picture moving forward, there's
- 2:04Speaker 2: winnable games on the docket, Mississippi State. We'll see what
- 2:07Speaker 2: happens with Kamario Taylor when it comes to his availability
- 2:09Speaker 2: for Saturday night. We'll see how the 11 a.m. kickoff
- 2:12Speaker 2: goes at Auburn. I think those are two very favorable
- 2:14Speaker 2: games for you. And then you've got Texas and Alabama
- 2:17Speaker 2: at home. It's always fun in Death Valley. There's always
- 2:21Speaker 2: some craziness that goes on when it's dark, when it's
- 2:24Speaker 2: night in Death Valley and Tiger Stadium. It gets crazy,
- 2:27Speaker 2: and it's favorable for LSU. Tennessee will be rough, and
- 2:29Speaker 2: then Arkansas, I'm going to sit here and pencil it
- 2:32Speaker 2: in as a win. Who knows? Maybe we circle back
- 2:34Speaker 2: on this and laugh about it. But long answer would say,
- 2:38Speaker 2: I think that you have a favorable chance moving forward.
- 2:40Speaker 2: It's going to be hard to run the table, but
- 2:42Speaker 2: you just got to play some disciplined football and hope
- 2:44Speaker 2: that you get trade as in wit back in November.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Do you, what is the, what is the fan mood?
- 2:51Speaker 1: What is the, just like, you know, there's certainly frustration.
- 2:54Speaker 1: So I don't want to just seal your answer, but
- 2:56Speaker 1: is there like an understanding of like, Hey man, injuries happen.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Levitt came to this thing bait. Like most fans are
- 3:03Speaker 1: not reasonable. Let's be honest with ourselves. But like, what
- 3:05Speaker 1: is the mood there? Maybe I'll shut up and just
- 3:07Speaker 1: let you answer.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I mean, when you're talking message board talk like we
- 3:09Speaker 2: got over at 24-7, you got people who are impatient.
- 3:12Speaker 2: You expect to win in year one when you have
- 3:14Speaker 2: a $ 45 million-plus commitment to the roster. People aren't reasonable
- 3:18Speaker 2: when it comes to injuries, especially to three players that, truthfully,
- 3:21Speaker 2: are all SEC-caliber guys. I mean, Whit Weeks, Deshaun Spears,
- 3:25Speaker 2: and Trades Green, there's not much to say. When you
- 3:27Speaker 2: lose those three, it puts you in a pretty tough spot, dude. So,
- 3:31Speaker 2: I think the fan mood down here is impatient, which
- 3:33Speaker 2: is insane, considering you're only six games into the Lane
- 3:36Speaker 2: Kiffin era, but when there's a financial commitment that they
- 3:39Speaker 2: have and the buzz that was brewing all offseason, it's
- 3:42Speaker 2: a fair perspective on their part. So the fan mood
- 3:46Speaker 2: is impatient and peed off is what I'll say. I'll
- 3:49Speaker 2: keep it PG, peed off. So we'll see how things
- 3:52Speaker 2: go moving forward. But some are reasonable, some aren't, and
- 3:56Speaker 2: probably 70% of them are not feeling too confident right now.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I think this era that we're in, and it's not
- 4:02Speaker 1: Lane's fault, it's not LSU's fault, this era that we're
- 4:05Speaker 1: in does create a heightened sense of expectation. You look
- 4:11Speaker 1: at the fact that he was able to get a
- 4:13Speaker 1: team to the playoff last year at Ole Miss and
- 4:15Speaker 1: LSU fans would look at Ole Miss and say, look,
- 4:18Speaker 1: fine program, not the program in Baton Rouge, right? With
- 4:21Speaker 1: just the hierarchy of, of the sec and of college football.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And then again, what you just said, NIL, nobody would
- 4:27Speaker 1: have a huge and the transfer portal, which plays into
- 4:29Speaker 1: that and lets you kind of accelerate things a little faster.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Nobody would have had a problem with like nine and three. Oh, well,
- 4:36Speaker 1: there would have been less of a problem with 9-3
- 4:38Speaker 1: like 10 years ago when a coach took over. Now,
- 4:42Speaker 1: there wasn't a 12-team playoff. There is a lot of
- 4:44Speaker 1: differences in the game. But yeah, NIL and the portal
- 4:47Speaker 1: and his success at his last stop probably heightened expectations
- 4:54Speaker 1: and really the talent on this team. Now, injuries matter,
- 4:56Speaker 1: but the talent on this team was such that There's
- 4:59Speaker 1: a reason they were voted in the top 10 or
- 5:01Speaker 1: around the top 10 by a lot of people to
- 5:03Speaker 1: start this year. And so, yeah, I mean, you know,
- 5:06Speaker 1: seeing a couple of failures before we've gotten to even
- 5:10Speaker 1: November or even, you know, mid-October, I will get right
- 5:13Speaker 1: back to the interview. But first, if you are looking
- 5:15Speaker 1: for the largest and best selection of game day merchandise
- 5:18Speaker 1: and apparel, make sure that you are shopping at Alumni Hall.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Right now, Alumni Hall is giving you 15% off. If
- 5:24Speaker 1: you use our code CFA15, on your favorite team's gear,
- 5:30Speaker 1: on your rival's gear. If you're watching this from an
- 5:32Speaker 1: opponent perspective, it still works. The code does not discriminate.
- 5:36Speaker 1: CFA 15 will get you 15% off at alumni hall.
- 5:40Speaker 1: We appreciate them for their support. Go check them out.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Certainly would. I can understand people being upset. I can
- 5:45Speaker 1: also say they're probably a little unreasonable because it was
- 5:49Speaker 1: just year one, but I mean, I get it. I'm
- 5:51Speaker 1: right there. I understand the frustration with it. When you
- 5:54Speaker 1: spend that much money and you have this much excitement,
- 5:56Speaker 1: this kind of coach, you, you want to win pretty quickly.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Well, man, to that is like, you're sitting back and
- 6:01Speaker 2: you're looking at your most recent loss. It's year one
- 6:03Speaker 2: for Will Stein. And you're looking at what UCLA is doing.
- 6:06Speaker 2: You're looking at all these programs where to your point, man,
- 6:08Speaker 2: you're right on the money. People are impatient, but for
- 6:11Speaker 2: good reason, when you have NIL and you have financial
- 6:13Speaker 2: commitments that can have programs get turned around quite literally overnight, man,
- 6:17Speaker 2: like this isn't something where you're playing the waiting game
- 6:20Speaker 2: and signing guys at a high school and waiting for
- 6:22Speaker 2: them to develop. You're bringing in developed talent that's ready
- 6:24Speaker 2: to win now. And You know, LSU did that with
- 6:26Speaker 2: a lot of these guys. They're battling the injury bug,
- 6:28Speaker 2: and the SEC's tough. It really is tough. But when
- 6:31Speaker 2: you see the likes of Kentucky coming in and, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 2: winning big right now in year one under Will Stein,
- 6:36Speaker 2: who I am such a fan of. I think the
- 6:40Speaker 2: culture change that he's bringing up to Lexington is awesome. But,
- 6:43Speaker 2: you know, like you said, people expect to win now
- 6:45Speaker 2: with NIL playing a big role in the game. And,
- 6:48Speaker 2: you know, there's a reason why this fan base is
- 6:50Speaker 2: a little impatient right now. It's for good reason. Yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Start last thing. And then we'll kind of get off
- 6:56Speaker 1: of some big picture, I think for a minute, but
- 6:58Speaker 1: what is the, uh, I mean, you're, I, you know, are,
- 7:01Speaker 1: are you around there? Like, are you in some of the, um,
- 7:04Speaker 1: like what, what is the mood kind of internally? I
- 7:07Speaker 1: asked about the fans, but where are they right now
- 7:09Speaker 1: at LSU? Are there like, man, tough game move on?
- 7:13Speaker 1: Or are there some doubts just around, not lane going forward,
- 7:16Speaker 1: but just like around the season, like it was kind
- 7:19Speaker 1: of different than we thought it would be, or what
- 7:20Speaker 1: do you think the vibe is there on campus and
- 7:22Speaker 1: in the offices?
- 7:24Speaker 2: I think when you talk to Lane, he continues to
- 7:26Speaker 2: say he's not overreacting, and it's fair. He continued to
- 7:29Speaker 2: say all spring and all fall, pump the brakes on
- 7:32Speaker 2: this national title buzz, pump the brakes on these deep
- 7:34Speaker 2: national championship runs, and understand that it's going to take time.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I think he might have had an understanding that this
- 7:40Speaker 2: team might not have been who a lot of people
- 7:41Speaker 2: thought that they would be during the offseason, which is
- 7:44Speaker 2: the reason why he was kind of pumping the brakes
- 7:45Speaker 2: a little bit. So I think for Lane, he's still
- 7:48Speaker 2: confident in what this kind of product can be, even
- 7:50Speaker 2: in 2026. I stand by it. I think that this
- 7:53Speaker 2: team is a couple plays away from being 6-0. The
- 7:56Speaker 2: chips just didn't fall their way or whatever the saying is.
- 7:59Speaker 2: And then you think about the players. I think that
- 8:02Speaker 2: a lot of these guys understand that, hey, there's a
- 8:04Speaker 2: lot of buzz surrounding the team. We still have a
- 8:05Speaker 2: chance to run the table. It's going to be tough.
- 8:08Speaker 2: But they're remaining optimistic. And, you know, man, we talked
- 8:10Speaker 2: to Sam Levitt yesterday during player interviews, and his main
- 8:14Speaker 2: thing was, When you look at the numbers, yes, I've
- 8:16Speaker 2: thrown eight interceptions, but a lot of them have just
- 8:18Speaker 2: been plays that haven't gone his way. He was talking
- 8:21Speaker 2: about PFF analytics and all these other things and whatnot,
- 8:23Speaker 2: and he's right. He's made a couple bad throws, but
- 8:26Speaker 2: a lot of them just haven't gone his way. Example
- 8:29Speaker 2: A would be his first interception of the season against Clemson,
- 8:31Speaker 2: where the ball was a little bit behind Malik Elzey,
- 8:34Speaker 2: but still could have made a little bit of a
- 8:36Speaker 2: play on it. So I think that the mood is optimism.
- 8:39Speaker 2: He's really optimistic moving forward, man.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Let's talk about Mississippi State for just a few minutes. Obviously,
- 8:45Speaker 1: you mentioned Camario and injuries are a talking point of
- 8:49Speaker 1: this game. If he is able to go and he
- 8:53Speaker 1: does suit up and lace up and go, you'd wonder
- 8:56Speaker 1: how healthy guys are in any kind of matchup like that.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I don't want to say rushing back, but if there's
- 9:03Speaker 1: some question, you just wonder about effectiveness when they get
- 9:06Speaker 1: out there. He certainly presents a different dynamic for this
- 9:10Speaker 1: LSU defense to have to account for, I would like
- 9:14Speaker 1: to think that LSU could kind of do whatever they'd
- 9:18Speaker 1: like defensively if he's not out there. So I won't
- 9:21Speaker 1: entertain that because I don't know how much it's worth
- 9:25Speaker 1: breaking down what's the plan for the backup. But if
- 9:28Speaker 1: he is out there, that certainly presents a different kind
- 9:30Speaker 1: of challenge for LSU than they've seen in a few weeks,
- 9:34Speaker 1: for sure.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I think the narrative that kind of surrounds LSU,
- 9:38Speaker 2: Blake Baker, really, defensive coordinator, is that Mobile quarterbacks are
- 9:41Speaker 2: his kryptonite. I mean, he's struggled over the last couple
- 9:44Speaker 2: of years. We've seen it with Marcel Reed. This year
- 9:46Speaker 2: was an outlier, of course, handling business there. But Trinidad Chambliss,
- 9:49Speaker 2: and the list goes on and on. So mobile quarterbacks
- 9:52Speaker 2: really hurt Blake Baker in this defense. Now, will we
- 9:54Speaker 2: see Kamario Taylor this weekend? That's to be seen. I'm
- 9:57Speaker 2: really intrigued about that injury report that's going to drop
- 9:59Speaker 2: Wednesday night. But nonetheless, man, I do think if he's
- 10:04Speaker 2: active and ready to go, yeah, it presents a really
- 10:06Speaker 2: tough challenge, especially for what we've seen in the past.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I mean, mobile quarterbacks do continue to hurt LSU in
- 10:11Speaker 2: a big, big way. You got Prince Luma on the edge,
- 10:14Speaker 2: who's going to try to contain Kamario if he plays
- 10:16Speaker 2: in the pocket. You've got some linebacker play with TJ Dotter,
- 10:19Speaker 2: who's really talented sideline to sideline. But, man, if Camario plays,
- 10:23Speaker 2: it puts the Bulldogs in a pretty unique spot. If
- 10:26Speaker 2: he doesn't, then Vegas, that number at minus 14, whatever
- 10:29Speaker 2: it is right now, I certainly understand why it's at that.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and it could jump substantially from there if that
- 10:36Speaker 1: is the case. Other side of the ball, we saw
- 10:40Speaker 1: Bama put up pretty good offensive production against Mississippi State.
- 10:45Speaker 1: could this be a get-right game, whether Camario plays on
- 10:47Speaker 1: the other side, could this be a get-right game for
- 10:50Speaker 1: LSU's offense to try and do some things, maybe take
- 10:52Speaker 1: care of the ball a little bit better against a
- 10:54Speaker 1: defense that certainly has its struggles with Mississippi State?
- 10:57Speaker 2: I think so. Man, I think the goal going into
- 10:59Speaker 2: this one is going to play complementary football. It feels
- 11:02Speaker 2: like one day or one game we see the passing
- 11:03Speaker 2: attack crush it, and then another game the rushing attack
- 11:06Speaker 2: crush it. We haven't really seen that complementary football in
- 11:08Speaker 2: a couple different games here. So I think against Mississippi
- 11:11Speaker 2: State it gives you the chance to fulfill that goal
- 11:14Speaker 2: and get some complimentary football. I think Dylan Jones is
- 11:16Speaker 2: one heck of a running back. He's a bully ball
- 11:19Speaker 2: kind of guy, but he has some elusiveness to him too.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I think he has a chance to have a really
- 11:22Speaker 2: big game against Mississippi State. And then Sam Levitt. You know,
- 11:26Speaker 2: you haven't seen a receiver really rise to the top
- 11:27Speaker 2: just yet. He's kind of spread it out every game, six, seven,
- 11:30Speaker 2: eight different pass catchers each night. So for me, I
- 11:33Speaker 2: want to see him continue to utilize his weapons here,
- 11:36Speaker 2: not necessarily fall back on one guy, but utilize the
- 11:38Speaker 2: weapons that you got. But at the same time, keep
- 11:40Speaker 2: the ball. you know, in your guys' hands. We haven't
- 11:42Speaker 2: seen a game where he hasn't had a turnover. He's
- 11:45Speaker 2: thrown a pick in every single game of the year.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Going into this one, it has a chance to be
- 11:48Speaker 2: a get-right game in the sense of limit turnovers, let
- 11:51Speaker 2: Sam Levitt hit his guys, and then get the balance
- 11:53Speaker 2: attack going on the ground again. I think it has
- 11:55Speaker 2: a chance to be a get-right game for sure.
- 11:59Speaker 1: You mentioned some of the other injuries to LSU. We're
- 12:04Speaker 1: recording this. I think it'll come out on Thursday morning.
- 12:06Speaker 1: So we are recording this without the benefit of the
- 12:09Speaker 1: of the injury report dropping. Although I will say, not
- 12:12Speaker 1: that it matters too much with Lane Kiffin with, with
- 12:15Speaker 1: what that says. So maybe it, it doesn't matter if
- 12:18Speaker 1: it would have dropped or not. Um, but other guys that,
- 12:21Speaker 1: that will need to be stepping up if, if LSU
- 12:23Speaker 1: is without some of the guys that we've already kind
- 12:25Speaker 1: of talked about with Witten and others.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I think with Trada is out for, you know,
- 12:30Speaker 2: who knows the, the goal, the target goal for him
- 12:31Speaker 2: to get back is November 7th against Bama. And we'll
- 12:34Speaker 2: see if that kind of comes to fruition, but that
- 12:36Speaker 2: is the target goal for him. So in the meantime, um,
- 12:39Speaker 2: You're working with wide receiver turned tight end Roman Mothershed,
- 12:42Speaker 2: who I really love. I think that he presents a
- 12:44Speaker 2: kind of playmaking ability that you don't have in that
- 12:46Speaker 2: room beyond Tredez Green. You have Zach Grace, who's more
- 12:50Speaker 2: of an H-back, and you've got Malachi Thomas, a pit
- 12:52Speaker 2: transfer who just has been inconsistent as all heck. So
- 12:56Speaker 2: you fall back on Roman Mothershed in the tight end room,
- 12:58Speaker 2: and he's been awesome. He's caught two tutties, been effective
- 13:01Speaker 2: in that regard. And then at the linebacker spot with
- 13:04Speaker 2: Witt Weeks out, you fall back on Devon Keyes, who
- 13:06Speaker 2: struggled so much against Kentucky. It was a tough watch,
- 13:10Speaker 2: but I do think that he has a chance to
- 13:11Speaker 2: continue to shake back and move in the right direction.
- 13:13Speaker 2: He was number two in the SEC in tackles in
- 13:16Speaker 2: 2025 when Whit Weeks was hurt. So those are two
- 13:18Speaker 2: guys that you kind of got to keep your eyes on, man.
- 13:20Speaker 2: It's Roman Mothershed who's going to be playing some tight
- 13:22Speaker 2: end role for him, and then Devon Keyes, who's Whit
- 13:24Speaker 2: Weeks' backup. The goal is to get Trey Dezen Whit
- 13:27Speaker 2: back by November 7th for Alabama. We'll see how they
- 13:30Speaker 2: kind of handle this moving forward with their treatment. But
- 13:33Speaker 2: those are two players that I'm keeping tabs on for
- 13:34Speaker 2: this weekend for sure.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Do you have a score in this one? I'll let
- 13:39Speaker 1: you give two. One with Camario, one without.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I appreciate that, man, because it changes the game for sure.
- 13:45Speaker 2: For me, I think if LSU goes out there, and
- 13:48Speaker 2: even if Camario's out there, well, first one would be
- 13:51Speaker 2: if Camario plays. I think LSU handles business probably 41-24.
- 13:54Speaker 2: I think that they get it done by double digits
- 13:56Speaker 2: in a pretty big way. It's Tiger Stadium. It's in
- 13:58Speaker 2: the morning, but I still think they're going to be
- 14:00Speaker 2: ready to roll there. So if Camario plays, I'll say 41-24,
- 14:03Speaker 2: and if he doesn't play 41, 17, you know, keep
- 14:07Speaker 2: it smooth. I think they score over 40 points in
- 14:09Speaker 2: this one. I think your defense has to step up.
- 14:11Speaker 2: And my opinion, if Camario doesn't play and you allow
- 14:14Speaker 2: 17 points, that's still not really acceptable. Uh, but that's
- 14:17Speaker 2: where I'm kind of trending right now, man. It is
- 14:19Speaker 2: around that 41, 24, uh, 41 kind of 27 or
- 14:22Speaker 2: 17 range.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I am not biased by saying this cause I'm not a, uh,
- 14:28Speaker 1: an LSU guy at all, but there should be an
- 14:29Speaker 1: unwritten rule in, um, in, in college football to where
- 14:33Speaker 1: LSU should not be allowed to play home games that
- 14:35Speaker 1: start this early. Right. Like that. She like, like, you know,
- 14:39Speaker 1: the big 10 is not allowed to play anytime except
- 14:40Speaker 1: for noon. Uh, the, the, it should be the opposite
- 14:43Speaker 1: with LSU. Like they should all be night games, at
- 14:46Speaker 1: least three thirties.
- 14:48Speaker 2: The perspective is money. Like I agree with you 100%.
