- 0:00Speaker 1: I have a kind of a two part story here
- 0:03or three part I don't know. We'll see how it goes. Yeah.
- 0:07So I have this, and I've talked about it before
- 0:12in my right eye, wet macular degeneration, which is better
- 0:17than having dry macular if.
- 0:19Speaker 2: You're gonna have macular general, I.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Mean, the wet one is fairly treatable. Dry not very treatable.
- 0:28Uh but you know, either or you go blind eventually.
- 0:31Just but they can they can halt the progress of
- 0:34the wet macular degeneration by giving me injections of It's
- 0:41a drug called of aston, and you get an injection
- 0:44right into your eye. Yeah, uh so. Uh so this
- 0:49was discovered that I had this four years ago something
- 0:52like that. Started going to this eye doctor, this retin
- 0:55a specialist, and he gave me a series of injecttions.
- 1:00It took about eight months. You get one a month
- 1:02and then he they check the progress of the degeneration
- 1:06and and he's after cut, why is it? You know,
- 1:10looks like we stopped it for the time being. And
- 1:12I didn't go back for a couple of years, all right.
- 1:15And what it does to you is that it distorts
- 1:18your vision and distort your vision in different ways depending
- 1:21on where it is. With me, horizontal lines start melting.
- 1:26They just go so creepy. I'll read it. I'll look
- 1:29at a street sign and the first two words are
- 1:31in line, and then they just kind of melt down
- 1:33out of the way. So it started up again, so
- 1:36I started going back. I went back. He said, yes,
- 1:39it's progressed. So I had an injection last month, and
- 1:43then last week I went for my second injection. And
- 1:47as I sit down to have the injection, the young
- 1:50woman who's kind of getting me all ready for it, says,
- 1:52now I need to know how much money you make
- 1:54every year and how many dependents you have. And the
- 1:58eye don't. Yeah, said why why, why why do you
- 2:02need that? That's that's for the insurance. And I said,
- 2:07I have insurance. Why don't Why do they need to
- 2:11know that? She said, well, it's for the clinical trial
- 2:13that you're a part of. I said what, I said,
- 2:17what what nobody's told me I'm part of a clinical trial?
- 2:20What are you talking about? She gets a kind of
- 2:22a confused look on her face and said, I don't.
- 2:25I don't really know. I'm just I'll go find out
- 2:27about it and see so it comes back and the
- 2:33doctor and another person starts talking to me about it. Yeah,
- 2:36well they need to know how much money you make
- 2:39every year and the dependence. It's not my insurance that
- 2:43needs to know it. Because there's a new drug that's
- 2:46a little better than of aston, Okay, the doctor wants
- 2:51to use that. Okay, Well, the insurance company doesn't want
- 2:55to have anything to do with that. See, but there
- 2:58is a charity that if you can qualify for the charity,
- 3:05they will help supplement the cost of it. But you
- 3:07don't qualify. I don't think I don't think so. I
- 3:11don't believe I would. I did so I talked to
- 3:15the doctor's staff that deals with all the insurance stuff,
- 3:19and she said, listen, hold off, I don't I don't
- 3:23know if you'll qualify for this, but there are some
- 3:25other things we might be able to do. I'm going
- 3:27to look into it. I like nothing better than sticking
- 3:30it to the insurance call.
- 3:31Speaker 2: And shouldn't we all be able to get whatever the
- 3:34best medicine for this works the best?
- 3:38Speaker 1: Why is this? The American people didn't vote for that,
- 3:42and the and the insurance companies, well, we know better
- 3:45than the doctor and the doctor, being the guy he is,
- 3:50he said, just give bill. We've got free samples of it.
- 3:54We'll use a free sample. We'll use a free sample.
- 3:58So I mean I still have to pay that, you know,
- 4:00the visit cope here. Just give him the free sample.
- 4:03So the procedure is this, They numb up your eye
- 4:09with the drops and that takes several minutes, and they
- 4:12come back and put more drops in there and numb
- 4:14it and more drops in numb it. And then they
- 4:17take this little device you've seen clockwork orange where they
- 4:21have Alex's eyes with this little little little springy thing.
- 4:27And then the doctor very quick. It's very quick. It
- 4:32doesn't hurt, really, it's just kind of creepy. You feel
- 4:37you feel a little pop and then you can see
- 4:41the liquid sort of swirling around and side.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And you don't even get a valume for this.
- 4:52Speaker 1: But but the doctor, this doctor, I'm not going to
- 4:54mention his name. He's really nice. I mean, he's just
- 4:57such a nice guy. He's very kind of humble and
- 5:02quiet and concerned.
- 5:04Speaker 2: And he's just you feel like you're in good hand.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yeah, since I've been going to see him, he's I
- 5:09just really like him. He's just great and so he
- 5:13kind of makes you feel more at ease and and
- 5:16it doesn't hurt really. But as they put the and
- 5:19I said, you know, you got to put pictures of
- 5:21clockwork orange all over the room. And I said, yeah,
- 5:24it'd be great. But as as he was, as the
- 5:28his assistant was putting the little pry open thing there,
- 5:31a little eye pry thing, I said, what's that thing called?
- 5:34And she said it's a speculum. Yeah, And I said,
- 5:39it's really a speculum. Yes, it's spread something open. Yes,
- 5:44it's used to spray thing. And so I said, a speculum. Well,
- 5:48that's just that's interesting. And the doctor said, yeah, I
- 5:51don't like calling it that, he said, he said, especially
- 5:54in front of my female patients. I just I just
- 5:57see it. Say it's the it's the eye pry open thing.
- 6:01It's the prior eye probably open thing. And I really
- 6:04don't care for I don't I never call it the speculum.
- 6:08Have to call it.
- 6:10Speaker 2: We wouldn't want to call it the spreader either. No, no,
- 6:14because that's that's a chest spreader. They have a similar.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Nurse get that thing either prized the eye open. Okay, doctor,
- 6:20you mean the spec. Don't say that. Don't say it's
- 6:23You could tell he was just kind of embarrassed. Get
- 6:26the thing, get the eye thing, you get the thing.
- 6:30Speaker 2: You know what I mean, You know what I mean.
- 6:32Speaker 1: They're they are terrific in that office though. And the
- 6:35woman that's gonna you know that I talked to on
- 6:38the phone about the having to pay for this, she said,
- 6:42there's this is how screwed up our system is. The
- 6:46drug company who makes this newer drug also has a
- 6:49program that that they will pay for the extra amount
- 6:57that the insurance won't cover. Yeah, and and it's all
- 7:01a system of kickbacks, and you know it's just ridiculous.
- 7:07Speaker 2: But God forbid we have the S word socialism, Yes,
- 7:12because that's demonic or whatever.
- 7:15Speaker 1: It is about. Let's have n H National Health.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Oh, that's just another name for the S word. And
- 7:23you know what else begins with the letter S, Satan
- 7:28Speaker 1: And Shazam,
