- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Brian Bedore. Provincial government is taking its websites and
- 0:09Speaker 1: some online services offline as a precautionary measure due to
- 0:14Speaker 1: what is being described as a newly disclosed global cyber
- 0:18Speaker 1: security vulnerability. It says technical teams are assessing the situation
- 0:23Speaker 1: and working to restore affected services. It's working with federal, provincial,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and territorial partners on the situation. All websites and services
- 0:32Speaker 1: are being assessed on an individual basis to determine which
- 0:36Speaker 1: ones can remain available. MyGovNL is not affected at this time,
- 0:42Speaker 1: the OCM News following that situation. A company building a
- 0:46Speaker 1: spaceport in southern Newfoundland says it has signed a $ 20
- 0:49Speaker 1: million contract with the Department of National Defense. NordSpace says
- 0:54Speaker 1: the 10-year agreement gives the federal government priority access to
- 0:58Speaker 1: the company's dedicated launch pad on the Buren Peninsula. NordSpace
- 1:02Speaker 1: says the money covers the cost of maintaining the facility,
- 1:06Speaker 1: but it does not cover the cost of launching rockets.
- 1:09Speaker 1: The company announced last week it was entering the second
- 1:12Speaker 1: phase of construction of that launch facility, which is near St.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Lawrence.
- 1:17Speaker 1: A metro area lawyer raising the alarm about the number
- 1:20Speaker 1: of sexual assault nurse examiners in the province. There are
- 1:23Speaker 1: only two nurses available in the province 24-7 who are
- 1:27Speaker 1: trained for that kind of work. One in St. John's
- 1:29Speaker 1: and one in Cornerbrook. That is a serious concern for
- 1:32Speaker 1: lawyer Lynn Moore. NLHS says those figures are not entirely
- 1:37Speaker 1: accurate and updated numbers will soon be made available. Moore
- 1:41Speaker 1: told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan the numbers she
- 1:45Speaker 1: understands them leave a serious gap in rural parts of
- 1:49Speaker 1: the province.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Very important for the administration of justice that people have
- 1:55Speaker 2: access to someone who's been trained in trauma-informed practices to
- 2:01Speaker 2: help someone through what is a pretty invasive and unpleasant
- 2:06Speaker 2: gynecological examination after a sexual assault. And, of course, when
- 2:12Speaker 2: that has to be done, it has to be done
- 2:14Speaker 2: in a very timely fashion or else the biological evidence
- 2:17Speaker 2: is lost.
- 2:18Speaker 1: She says it's troubling that more specially trained nurses are
- 2:21Speaker 1: not available.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Especially given Newfoundland has one of the highest rates of
- 2:27Speaker 2: sexual violence in the country, and the fact that this
- 2:31Speaker 2: service is not available is very discouraging.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Meanwhile, Premier Tony Wakeham agrees that increased access to sexual
- 2:39Speaker 1: assault nurse examiners is needed.
- 2:42Speaker 3: My minister talked about that recently, and absolutely, I mean,
- 2:45Speaker 3: that's something that needs that. Look, We ought to be
- 2:48Speaker 3: doing and working on improving, making our community safer, making
- 2:53Speaker 3: our workplaces safer. And that should be a goal for
- 2:55Speaker 3: no matter what government's in power, and it's something that
- 2:57Speaker 3: we certainly have to look at. But I look forward
- 2:59Speaker 3: to working with the people in the industries to make
- 3:00Speaker 3: that happen.
- 3:02Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Brian Medour.
