- 0:31I don't know about you, but I love
- 0:32food. Love it so much to start running
- 0:35because I'm 4 foot 11 and things out
- 0:37up quick,
- 0:38and it just kinda helps me
- 0:41keep
- 0:42all the stuff and balance.
- 0:44Today's episode is all about how food can
- 0:46affect our anxiety levels,
- 0:49I'm gonna give some tips on how to
- 0:51deal with that, even if you are a
- 0:53lover of food and you're used to traditional
- 0:57cooking,
- 0:58Which is not always the cleanest.
- 1:00A few tips. I'm also gonna talk about
- 1:03what foods have good properties for our bodies.
- 1:07To not cause anxiety and the ones that
- 1:10we should avoid. Today is all about just
- 1:12feeling your body because Our bodies are connected
- 1:16in our mind, our body and spirit. We
- 1:18can't disconnect that. It's 1 system, and what
- 1:21we eat really does. Matter, but we can't
- 1:24just rely on food to manage our stress
- 1:26and anxiety. We do have to use regular
- 1:29exercise, sleep
- 1:30meditation, prayer, all the things that help manage
- 1:33our stress, but food does make a difference.
- 1:36Anxiety causing foods are usually processed foods like
- 1:39chips, cookies, frozen foods,
- 1:42sugar is a big 1, It hangs out
- 1:44in a lot of our foods, 9 teaspoons,
- 1:47for men is the allotted amount of sugar
- 1:49in a day, 6 for women. You'd be
- 1:52surprised how much and how quickly it adds
- 1:54up caffeine in excess
- 1:57also causes anxiety, fatty food, soft drinks, candy,
- 2:01and just lack of hydration can cause anxiety.
- 2:04Well, we are stressed. A lot of times,
- 2:06these are the things that we go for.
- 2:08You know, it's what we turn to when
- 2:10we're having a really rough day. But in
- 2:13the long run, it actually increases our anxiety
- 2:16and depression,
- 2:17research shows that high sugar, high processed foods.
- 2:21Cause increased cortisol levels, which is the primary
- 2:24hormone for stress.
- 2:26Research also shows
- 2:28an increase in stress and cortisol
- 2:31have been linked to increase in developing obesity,
- 2:35metabolic syndromes, cardiovascular
- 2:37disease, type 2 diabetes,
- 2:40depression and disorders of the brain. So what
- 2:42can we do to combat that? I'd like
- 2:44to list a few food she probably
- 2:47no, but I think it's always really good
- 2:49to have a refresher or so that next
- 2:51time you go to the grocery store your
- 2:52grab for these. Foods that reduce anxiety are
- 2:56also
- 2:57high in omega 3 fatty acid, like your
- 3:00fish,
- 3:01salmon,
- 3:02tuna,
- 3:03sardines,
- 3:04nuts and seeds, almonds, walnuts,
- 3:07fl,
- 3:08chia seeds, avocados,
- 3:10vegetable,
- 3:11leafy greens,
- 3:13strawberry, citrus, papaya, can, apr cuts, lean, proteins,
- 3:18like chicken fish eggs, and also
- 3:21for minute food, dark chocolate,
- 3:24avocado,
- 3:25broccoli.
- 3:25There are so many more I didn't wanna
- 3:27bore you with the list, but that's a
- 3:29very good list to keep in mind next
- 3:31time you're at the store. And you so
- 3:33I know that personally, I have 14 teenagers
- 3:36and sometimes there were things in my house
- 3:38that I don't love, even though my kids
- 3:41know where I stand with food, you know,
- 3:43we're human and I like to live life
- 3:45to the fullest, like, right now, as we
- 3:48speak, I have kids sleeping on my couch.
- 3:51And I promise you they were not eating
- 3:52kale chips last night of
- 3:55So I live in the real world, and
- 3:57I just put my blind on because I
- 4:00do not wanna eat what they were eaten
- 4:01last night for their movie marathon of,
- 4:04Harry Potter. How do we navigate life and
- 4:07have balance,
- 4:09but still keep our bodies
- 4:11aligned so that we can show up our
- 4:13best. Just a few ideas with this, try
- 4:16to stay on the outer rim of your
- 4:18grocery store,
- 4:19keeping fresh fruit vegetables.
- 4:21In the refrigerator ready for you to grab
- 4:24if you need a good snack, having some
- 4:27eggs boiled
- 4:29Don't know what your food preferences are, but
- 4:30whatever they are, fruits and vegetables
- 4:33at the ready, so you're not going for
- 4:35that junk, honestly, just not keeping the junk
- 4:37in the house. We tip really don't have
- 4:40Junk unless we've had a party, and that
- 4:42really does make it easier. But if some
- 4:44of your family members
- 4:46keep those oreos handy and the pantry, just
- 4:49make sure you have your fruit go to
- 4:51so that you're not going for those cookies.
- 4:54Other ideas around this is this... Again, it's
- 4:57not a cure all. You have to combine
- 4:58this
- 4:59with
- 5:01a balanced life, and I have an acronym
- 5:04for that. I'll continue to be building this
- 5:06out throughout other podcasts, but the acronym is
- 5:10in order to stay balanced in your life,
- 5:13you need
- 5:14MEDSR.
- 5:17So meds, rx.
- 5:19These are the things we can do in
- 5:21our life to have wellness
- 5:23so that we have to so that we
- 5:25can avoid taking meds and prescriptions. M is
- 5:29for mindfulness,
- 5:30your spiritual practice,
- 5:33exercise for e, diet for d, s is
- 5:36sleep, our
- 5:38relationships, and x is just the extra stuff
- 5:41like breath work, getting a lot of
- 5:43hydration, make sure you're drinking enough water, grounding
- 5:46techniques, like taking your feet and putting them
- 5:50on the grass,
- 5:51combat, a lot of our screen time. These
- 5:53are all the extras that we can do
- 5:55to really keep our wellness
- 5:57and our mind, body spirit.
- 6:00Very aligned so that we can show up
- 6:02our best. Other thoughts with this are the
- 6:05fact that when we take care of our
- 6:07body, you know, it is our muscle. It
- 6:09deserves love and healthy food. This is a
- 6:11form of self love so that we can
- 6:13show up for others
- 6:15our best. We can't pour from an empty
- 6:17cup. The fuel we give ourselves gives us
- 6:20energy so that we can serve ourselves and
- 6:22others
- 6:24my why for why I try to eat
- 6:26well is because I wanna play with my
- 6:28grandkids. Which your why? Why can eating cleaner
- 6:31be a higher priority?
- 6:33Is there a reason, maybe, you... Maybe you
- 6:36wanna pull you your grandkids. Maybe you wanna
- 6:38live long and you have a list of
- 6:40things that you wanna complete your bucket list
- 6:42is long and you wanna
- 6:44live long enough to
- 6:45do those things. So what is your why?
- 6:48Why do you want to have less anxiety
- 6:51because
- 6:52All that anxiety
- 6:54causes so many different things in our lives,
- 6:57a few things that anxiety causes on the
- 6:59physical level are pal,
- 7:02pins and needles,
- 7:04grinding our teeth.
- 7:06It can affect your love life, psychologically,
- 7:09you feel tense, restless,
- 7:11panic or doom,
- 7:13social
- 7:14isolation. All of those can affect our work,
- 7:16life and families. So it's really important to
- 7:20not blow off the fact that food is
- 7:23a part of our mind body and spirit,
- 7:26and you could be taking really good care
- 7:28of your mind,
- 7:29but
- 7:30lack in the food department, and all of
- 7:32it makes a difference because we can't
- 7:35disconnect our minds, our bodies and spirits. It's
- 7:38together, so it really does make a difference
- 7:39what we eat. I know this is a
- 7:41tough 1. I grew up with food being
- 7:44loved.
- 7:44My grandma. I would go over there, and
- 7:46we would have a c of cookies. She
- 7:49would bake for weeks at a time to
- 7:51make Italian cookies
- 7:52at Christmas time. It was pretty much my
- 7:55heaven. He would walk in, and you would
- 7:56see every Italian cookie known to man. It
- 7:59smelled like a mixture of marinara sauce,
- 8:02and crawfish bi and iced cakes because she
- 8:06was a cater or she catered weddings. She
- 8:09was about 4 foot tall and that lady
- 8:12could cook. It was amazing. And those Christmas
- 8:15is are forever burned in my memories because
- 8:18they were amazing. And a lot of that
- 8:20had to do with food. So I do
- 8:22understand that food is very emotional and it's...
- 8:26Sometimes our traditions are not always the cleanest.
- 8:31I think it's good to have balance. When
- 8:33you have control and it's not a holidays.
- 8:35Season. Even during the holiday seasons, it's important
- 8:38to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables
- 8:40because we have to show up with a
- 8:42lot of energy and when you're eating cookies,
- 8:44it does make you tired all that show
- 8:46can make us tired. So I do believe
- 8:48there can be a balance.
- 8:50I am not a robot. I definitely
- 8:53or love a little fig italian cookie here
- 8:56and there, and I love sugar. I have
- 8:59to really watch my sugar intake. It's definitely
- 9:02my vice. So I understand the struggle is
- 9:05real. I guess I'm saying this today because
- 9:07I wanna bring the fact that anxiety causing
- 9:10foods. So are a thing and just the
- 9:13awareness of it. If you're really struggling and
- 9:16you're doing all your mindful practices and you're
- 9:19still having anxiety society. This is definitely something
- 9:22to think about what have I've been eating
- 9:24lately, You know, maybe I've been on the
- 9:26go and I've been eating a few more
- 9:28faster
- 9:29options. So do we combat that? Of course
- 9:31packing your lunch? But if you can't pack
- 9:33your lunch? Because I am on the road
- 9:35constantly, You can always go to, like, a
- 9:37grocery store and just hit the... Produce section.
- 9:40There's a lot of food options in the
- 9:42produce section that's healthy.
- 9:44Another idea is, gas stations,
- 9:47I live in the south. We have racetrack.
- 9:49They have
- 9:50a lot of really healthy options, like little
- 9:53combinations of fruits.
- 9:55And vegetables and nuts to fill you up
- 9:58while you're on the go and you just
- 10:00couldn't plan ahead. And and then, of course,
- 10:02there are cleaner fast food options depending on
- 10:05where you live. We have a little bit
- 10:06less of those in my neck of the
- 10:08woods, but hopefully you have a lot more.
- 10:11Those are just some tips to, hopefully
- 10:13amp up your food so that your food
- 10:16is not causing anxiety because there's nothing worse
- 10:19than
- 10:20really practicing that
- 10:22mindful
- 10:23practice having all the things in place, but
- 10:26you're still noticing anxiety. So today all about
- 10:29awareness with food and what it could possibly
- 10:32do to our brains, our guts,
- 10:35and our whole bodies.
- 10:36Take care of your body. It's your vessel.
- 10:39It deserves love,
- 10:40eating healthy food is a form of self
- 10:43love And like I said earlier, we can't
- 10:46pour from an empty cup. The fuel we
- 10:48give ourselves, gives us energy to serve others
- 10:51and ourselves.
- 10:52I hope this helps. I hope together we
- 10:54can plant some seeds of resilience and joy.
- 10:57Have an amazing day.
