- 0:51On April 20th, 2023, SpaceX launched its first integrated
- 0:55Starship and super heavy vehicle.
- 0:57But instead of a grand success, the mission concluded in an
- 1:00explosion, prompting an FAA investigation.
- 1:03Starship is the cornerstone of Spacex's vision for the future
- 1:07of space travel with its ability to carry a large payload and
- 1:10humans to the moon into Mars. Now the recent investigation
- 1:15looked into what went wrong and outlined 63 corrective actions
- 1:18the SpaceX needs to implement before taking to the skies
- 1:22again, the FAA made it clear that this isn't a complete green
- 1:26light for SpaceX. They stated that SpaceX would
- 1:28need to implement all corrective actions that impact public
- 1:32safety and apply for and receive a license modification from the
- 1:36FAA that addresses all safety, environmental, and other
- 1:40application regulatory requirements prior to the next
- 1:43Starship launch. Now, one of the critical issues
- 1:46was the failure of the two stages of a Starship separate,
- 1:49triggering Starships Autonomous Flight Safety System and causing
- 1:53the vehicle to be destroyed. Moreover, the power of the Super
- 1:56Heavies 33 Raptor engines resulted in damage to the
- 1:59Starbase launch site, creating a crater and launching debris into
- 2:03the air. These are among the aspects that
- 2:05SpaceX will need to refine before the next test flight.
- 2:09Now, Elon Musk, Spacex's head, took to social media to express
- 2:13that the company has already made numerous improvements.
- 2:15He noted that thousands of upgrades have been applied to
- 2:18both the Starship and the launchpad, and one of the most
- 2:21significant changes is the shift to hot staging, a complex
- 2:25process where the second stage engines begin firing before full
- 2:29separation from the first stage. Now this new strategy requires
- 2:32SpaceX to install new hardware, including a heat shield and a
- 2:35venting interstage. And another update involves
- 2:38fortifying the ground beneath Starbase's orbital launch mount
- 2:42with a steel plate that has a water spot or a deluge system.
- 2:45This deluge system is intended to dissipate the extreme force
- 2:49generated by super heavy 33 Raptors.
- 2:52The idea is that the water will act as a cushion against the
- 2:55engine power, reducing the chances of damaging the
- 2:57launchpad as occurred during April mishap.
- 3:01But the path to the next launch is not entirely free of
- 3:03roadblocks. There's the FBA's expectation
- 3:06that SpaceX will need to obtain a license modification, which
- 3:09means proving that all safety and environmental protocols are
- 3:13met. That's a tall order, and SpaceX
- 3:15hasn't yet announced one they'll apply for this modification, or
- 3:18when they expect to undertake another test flight.
- 3:21Spacex's Starship program isn't just a lark or an ambitious pipe
- 3:25dream, and has significant implications for the future of
- 3:28space travel. NASA plans to use Starship and
- 3:31its upcoming Artemis missions, which aim to return humans to
- 3:34the moon. Moreover, Starship is critical
- 3:36for Spacex's Starlink settling Internet service, currently
- 3:39providing connectivity across 50 countries.
- 3:42The legal landscape is equally complex.
- 3:45Environmental and cultural heritage nonprofits have raised
- 3:48questions about the environmental impact of Spacex's
- 3:51test flights. SpaceX and the FAA are
- 3:53defendants in a lawsuit alleging failure to conduct an
- 3:56appropriate environmental review prior to the first Starship test
- 4:00flag. This is Spacex's flagship
- 4:02project aimed at creating a fully reusable spacecraft that
- 4:05can carry humans to Mars and beyond, possibly to the outer
- 4:09solar system. Is that just a concept?
- 4:11On paper, it's an engineering marvel, the design to accomplish
- 4:14tasks previously considered near impossible, the capacity to
- 4:17carry up to 100 people. Eventually, along with ample
- 4:21cargo space, this rocket can undertake long duration voyages.
- 4:25Places like the Moon, Mars, and perhaps even more distant
- 4:28celestial bodies. Imagine it as the foundational
- 4:32block of Spacex's ambition to make life multiplanetary the
- 4:36Super Heavy rocket. The first stage of the Starship
- 4:38system comes with over 30 Raptor engines and serves as the
- 4:41workhorse for getting the second stage Starship out of Earth's
- 4:45gravitational pull by the height of about 230 plus feet.
- 4:50Super Heavy is designed to be not just powerful, but also
- 4:53efficient. Once it gets Starship to a
- 4:55certain altitude, it disengages and returns to Earth, where it
- 4:58can be refueled and launched again.
- 5:01Now this reusability feature is crucial for reducing the cost of
- 5:04space travel and making it more accessible to a broader
- 5:07population. Now the second stage Starship is
- 5:11not just a vessel for reaching other planets, It's essentially
- 5:14a mini habitat that can sustain life for extended periods of
- 5:18time. About life support, system
- 5:20spaces for scientific research and cargo areas for essentials
- 5:23like food and equipment. It's an all in one vehicle for
- 5:26exploring the cosmos. The spacecraft will be designed
- 5:30to execute pinpoint landings on celestial bodies that lack
- 5:33atmosphere using its own propulsion system.
- 5:36This provides the potential for establishing bases on the Moon
- 5:39and Mars and facilitates the transportation of resources
- 5:43between Earth and these extraterrestrial locations.
- 5:47Together, Starship and Super Heavy aren't just rockets.
- 5:50They are the cornerstones of a vision where interplanetary
- 5:53travel becomes a common aspect of human civilizations.
- 5:56Now, while the FAA recent decision marks progress, it
- 6:00doesn't mean that SpaceX can proceed without obstacles.
- 6:04Corrective actions need to be implemented and licenses need to
- 6:07be updated, and multiple stakeholders from regulatory
- 6:10agencies to environmental groups are keeping a watchful eye.
- 6:13Space Texas Starship could launch anywhere between two
- 6:16weeks or two months, so we're not exactly sure when this is
- 6:20going to happen. After the FAA approval, maybe
- 6:24there's going to be other environmental assessments and
- 6:27possibly SpaceX could get those 63 items done faster than we
