Latest / The Next Round / The Next Round: Lane Kiffin’s LSU Roster Gamble, Sam Leavitt Hype & Clemson Showdown | Hour 2
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Our number two of the next round rolling on.
- 0:03Speaker 2: LSU has been the talking point of college football all
- 0:06Speaker 2: summer long, mainly because of the roster Lane Kiffin built
- 0:11Speaker 2: down at LSU after he took the job. It's one
- 0:13Speaker 2: that is built to contend for the college football playoffs.
- 0:16Speaker 2: And then recently, some other things. So let's go to
- 0:18Speaker 2: the voice of LSU football, the guy who has his
- 0:21Speaker 2: finger on the pulse of everything down in the bayou. Yeah,
- 0:24Speaker 2: Matt Mascotta. He got on to us for our use
- 0:26Speaker 2: of vowels when we talked about it on the show once.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I think that was me. That was Jim. Jim gets
- 0:31Speaker 2: names wrong all the time, Matt. It was not a
- 0:33Speaker 2: slight at you. It's just Jim being Jim. Sorry.
- 0:36Speaker 3: And you just got it wrong.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Well, it's Jim's fault. It's the way he always says it.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Will you please clear this up? What are we doing?
- 0:43Speaker 3: It's easy.
- 0:44Speaker 4: It's Moscona, like a breakfast scone. A lot of people
- 0:48Speaker 4: just call me scone. Moscona.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Moscona. You think that's an Alabama, Louisiana thing that we
- 0:54Speaker 2: go ah and not ooh?
- 0:56Speaker 4: No, I think it's just a human race that struggles
- 0:59Speaker 4: with vowels thing. Cause I've dealt with it. No matter
- 1:01Speaker 4: what corner of the globe I've been on, people just
- 1:03Speaker 4: really struggled in vowels.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Matt, before we get into it, go ahead.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I was just going to say, I enjoy your content
- 1:09Speaker 2: all the time, especially post game on YouTube. Uh, don't
- 1:13Speaker 2: tell me how much money you spend on cigars, but
- 1:16Speaker 2: do you have a favorite brand of cigar that you smoke, uh,
- 1:20Speaker 2: in your post game?
- 1:20Speaker 4: Uh, I'll give a shout out, uh, to Bocock brothers. Um,
- 1:26Speaker 4: They're a, uh, they're a group of, uh, of LSU alums.
- 1:30Speaker 4: It's a Honduran tobacco and they're awesome. They actually did
- 1:33Speaker 4: a great job marketing it. And if you, if you
- 1:38Speaker 4: check out their website, they've actually done, um, royalty brand
- 1:42Speaker 4: deals with tons of schools. I think they have, I'm
- 1:46Speaker 4: pretty sure they have Alabama. I don't want to speak
- 1:48Speaker 4: out of turn. Um, But a lot of the championships,
- 1:52Speaker 4: for example, Florida won the basketball national championship. The officially
- 1:55Speaker 4: licensed cigars they were smoking with the labels and everything
- 1:58Speaker 4: were Bocut Brothers cigars. It's actually Indiana football this year.
- 2:02Speaker 4: It's a pretty amazing... um, American success story with how
- 2:07Speaker 4: they've built that brand. So yeah, Bocock brothers, check them out.
- 2:10Speaker 4: If you haven't code Matt 15, if.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Anybody wants to go bourbon, we've got a nice bourbon
- 2:16Speaker 1: room up in our facility here that we've stocked over
- 2:18Speaker 1: the last few years. And I see over your left
- 2:20Speaker 1: shoulder there. What is the, uh, I see some Weller
- 2:23Speaker 1: back there. Uh, what is your, your favorite bottle you've
- 2:26Speaker 1: got on that shelf?
- 2:29Speaker 4: My favorite bottle on the shelf would be the Four
- 2:31Speaker 4: Roses Limited Edition, the Four Roses LE, which is their
- 2:35Speaker 4: annual allocated release.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I have the 2017, 2020, and 2024. That one never misses.
- 2:39Speaker 3: If you can ever get a Four Roses LE, do it.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Do you sip that after wins over Alabama? Is there
- 2:48Speaker 2: a special occasion for that? There haven't been many of those.
- 2:50Speaker 2: There haven't been many of those.
- 2:53Speaker 4: No, I don't discriminate. It's just I believe– you ever
- 2:59Speaker 4: seen that movie Sideways, the wine movie?
- 3:01Speaker 1: Incredible, yeah.
- 3:03Speaker 3: So you know whenever at the end.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Of the movie the dude's sitting in the booth at
- 3:07Speaker 4: the diner drinking the wine out of the foam cup
- 3:09Speaker 4: and he's like the– You don't save it for the
- 3:13Speaker 4: special occasion. The special occasion is the day you open it.
- 3:16Speaker 4: That's what I believe about all that. So anybody comes
- 3:18Speaker 4: to my house, I don't take whatever you want.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I don't care. Drink whatever.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I've been saving a bottle for a special occasion, but
- 3:25Speaker 1: I love that scene. He's got a cheeseburger. He's by
- 3:27Speaker 1: himself and he's just knocking it out.
- 3:29Speaker 2: That's so good. All right. Matt Moscona, you see on
- 3:34Speaker 2: his shirt there, you can follow his work at Louisiana
- 3:36Speaker 2: sports.net Louisiana sports.net. um locked on lsu uh after further
- 3:40Speaker 2: review he has been killing it down in louisiana for
- 3:43Speaker 2: a long time i ask you this obviously lsu has
- 3:47Speaker 2: been in the center of a lot of news of
- 3:49Speaker 2: late um do lsu fans gladly accept the villain role
- 3:54Speaker 2: that it seems as though that the this team will
- 3:57Speaker 2: have this year is that very popular among lsu fans
- 3:59Speaker 2: right now.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Yeah i think most um Not to be flippant, guys.
- 4:05Speaker 4: I think most people here sincerely don't care how they're painted. Listen,
- 4:11Speaker 4: Louisiana is a... Every place has its own uniqueness, but
- 4:16Speaker 4: Louisiana is idiosyncratic even with respect to.
- 4:19Speaker 3: The rest of the Gulf South.
- 4:21Speaker 4: You can plop down in parts of rural Alabama or
- 4:26Speaker 4: Mississippi or Georgia and you may not be able to
- 4:27Speaker 4: tell where you are like you you're in the southern
- 4:30Speaker 4: part of Louisiana it ain't a mistaken dog where you
- 4:32Speaker 4: are and like people love the fact that it's different
- 4:35Speaker 4: here and they embrace it so there's this thing people
- 4:38Speaker 4: always say if you love Louisiana it'll love you back
- 4:41Speaker 4: and it's true but the flip side of it is
- 4:43Speaker 4: if you don't love Louisiana then bleep you it's sort
- 4:48Speaker 4: of it's sort of the approach that people have so
- 4:50Speaker 4: I I think wearing the black hat and being the villain,
- 4:55Speaker 4: it's just not something that people really care about here.
- 4:57Speaker 3: If that's what it is, it's what it is. I
- 4:59Speaker 3: think they just want to win.
- 5:00Speaker 1: So the perception right now, right or wrong, is Lane
- 5:03Speaker 1: Kiffin's kind of dying on this hill with these three
- 5:06Speaker 1: potential players, which is, I mean, it's a crazy story
- 5:11Speaker 1: in itself. I heard this morning that it's still not
- 5:14Speaker 1: known whether or not he's going to try to play
- 5:16Speaker 1: these guys this weekend. I mean, where are we on that?
- 5:20Speaker 4: So I guess let's just start start with like like
- 5:23Speaker 4: a practical matter of what's possible. OK, so two players
- 5:28Speaker 4: presently are working out with the team. It's junior to Halamaka,
- 5:33Speaker 4: the edge from Notre Dame. And then Lane confirmed on
- 5:36Speaker 4: Monday that Daquan Wright, the former Ole Miss tight end,
- 5:40Speaker 4: was there at their Monday walkthrough. So remember, the NCAA
- 5:44Speaker 4: has a mandatory, it's either a five to seven day
- 5:48Speaker 4: acclimatization period before you can go full contact. So Junior
- 5:54Speaker 4: has been with the team since last week. So if
- 5:56Speaker 4: the players win in court on Thursday, in theory, if
- 6:01Speaker 4: you follow the court order, Junior could play. It's a
- 6:05Speaker 4: little more complex with Daquan because Monday going through that
- 6:08Speaker 4: walkthrough is the first time he's done anything with the team.
- 6:11Speaker 4: He's been in Baton Rouge, but that was the first
- 6:13Speaker 4: time he was actually on the field or do anything
- 6:14Speaker 4: with the team. Is it plausible to think you could
- 6:17Speaker 4: actually have him in full pads on Sunday or on
- 6:20Speaker 4: Saturday playing in a game? Probably not. But I mean,
- 6:24Speaker 4: he was in this offense a year ago. So maybe
- 6:26Speaker 4: I would bet against that. There's two other players. Actually,
- 6:30Speaker 4: it's Xavier Harris, the defensive tackle from Ole Miss. And
- 6:33Speaker 4: as I understand it, he is he is doing conditioning.
- 6:37Speaker 4: So he is not, I would believe a possibility to
- 6:40Speaker 4: play on, on Saturday. And then another name is Blake cotton,
- 6:46Speaker 4: who we reported. He's a cornerback who spent last year
- 6:50Speaker 4: at Utah. And he's also in Baton Rouge. He's part
- 6:52Speaker 4: of the he's part of the case. That'll be heard Thursday.
- 6:57Speaker 4: And so he would be a possibility as well to
- 7:00Speaker 4: join the team. But again, it's unlikely that those guys
- 7:03Speaker 4: play against Clemson, even if they win on Thursday. I
- 7:05Speaker 4: would say the only one who would really have a
- 7:08Speaker 4: strong chance of playing against Clemson would be Junior Tua Halamaka.
- 7:12Speaker 2: When Alabama sort of went down a road like this
- 7:15Speaker 2: with Charles Bediako in basketball, I didn't like it at all.
- 7:19Speaker 2: And then I saw him on the court and I
- 7:21Speaker 2: really didn't like it because he didn't help the team.
- 7:23Speaker 2: In fact, I thought he hurt the team a little bit,
- 7:24Speaker 2: slowed him down. I guess the perception with a lot
- 7:28Speaker 2: of people is that, boy, Lane has some holes to
- 7:31Speaker 2: fill at the last moment. He needs these guys. But
- 7:34Speaker 2: when I look at the roster, I don't think he
- 7:35Speaker 2: needs these guys. How would these guys fit in? They
- 7:38Speaker 2: wouldn't be starters, would they?
- 7:42Speaker 3: I don't think any would start.
- 7:44Speaker 4: I think one thing I've learned about Lane covering him
- 7:47Speaker 4: in the last nine months is he really is obsessed
- 7:51Speaker 4: with the margins, right? And the things that he thinks
- 7:55Speaker 4: could maybe make his team or his roster just even
- 7:58Speaker 4: incrementally better. And that may be the difference between, you know,
- 8:03Speaker 4: not between going eight and four and being undefeated, but
- 8:05Speaker 4: the difference between, well, do you have the right depth
- 8:08Speaker 4: so that in week 12, you know, you're able to
- 8:11Speaker 4: get that extra first down in the fourth quarter, which
- 8:14Speaker 4: lets you kick the game winning field goal. Maybe that's
- 8:16Speaker 4: how his brain works. So when you look at the
- 8:18Speaker 4: players that they're looking at, You know, Daquan Wright is
- 8:21Speaker 4: a true prototype tight end.
- 8:22Speaker 3: They don't have that.
- 8:23Speaker 4: I mean, Trey Desgreen is a freak show pass catching
- 8:26Speaker 4: tight end, but he's not going to blow anybody off
- 8:28Speaker 4: the ball. You know, LSU, Lane Kiffin said it on Monday.
- 8:32Speaker 4: The one position battle that's still up for grabs is
- 8:34Speaker 4: defensive tackle. Well, a guy like Xavier Harris is a 6'8,
- 8:38Speaker 4: 330-pound guy with four years.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Of experience in the SEC.
- 8:41Speaker 4: You know, Blake Cotton wouldn't be a starter, but if
- 8:44Speaker 4: he ended up on the team, he'd probably end up
- 8:46Speaker 4: as their number three corner. behind dj pickett and pj
- 8:50Speaker 4: woodland so it's a really good depth piece there after
- 8:52Speaker 4: they lost aiden anding in spring it would know spring
- 8:55Speaker 4: portal they weren't able to replace him so uh you
- 8:59Speaker 4: know and then junior to a halamaka certainly a rotational
- 9:01Speaker 4: piece at edge so i don't think any of those
- 9:03Speaker 4: guys are like or difference makers fellas like i don't
- 9:06Speaker 4: think those are the ones that are you're not adding
- 9:09Speaker 4: a future all-conference or all-american type player i guess maybe
- 9:11Speaker 4: with daquan right he was second team all the cc
- 9:13Speaker 4: last year but um but I think it's just the
- 9:16Speaker 4: way Lane approaches it. He thinks maybe those are spots
- 9:19Speaker 4: on his roster where they're thin and he has an
- 9:22Speaker 4: opportunity to add experienced players. And if they're eligible, he's
- 9:25Speaker 4: looking to do it. That's kind of, I think his approach.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Matt Moscona is with us. You can follow Matt on
- 9:29Speaker 2: social media at his name at Matt Moscona. Um, he
- 9:32Speaker 2: just mentioned that position battle. He just dropped a podcast
- 9:35Speaker 2: a few hours ago that talks more about that and
- 9:37Speaker 2: has a Daquan Wright interview. Go get a link to
- 9:39Speaker 2: it right there on his social media. And you can, uh,
- 9:42Speaker 2: you can see more about that. Um, Lance mentioned yesterday,
- 9:46Speaker 2: he heard someone, one of the 8 million college football
- 9:49Speaker 2: analysts that are talking right now, say that Sam Levitt
- 9:51Speaker 2: could be the.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Most dynamic quarterback that Lane Kiffin has had.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Right. Most dynamic quarterback Lane Kiffin has had, which, as
- 9:59Speaker 2: we've talking well if that puts you in front of
- 10:02Speaker 2: jackson dart and in front of trinidad chambliss that's pretty
- 10:04Speaker 2: dang dynamic from the coaches and you've got great relationships
- 10:08Speaker 2: at lsu from the people you talk to there is
- 10:11Speaker 2: that lane kiffin's feeling about him is the best you
- 10:13Speaker 2: can gather.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Who he's got a lot to prove to pass the
- 10:18Speaker 4: type of season Chambliss had last year. But if you're
- 10:20Speaker 4: just looking at like physical skillset, I mean, guys, I
- 10:23Speaker 4: don't know if y'all have stood next to Trinidad, but
- 10:25Speaker 4: I mean, he might be six feet tall.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Probably not.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:28Speaker 4: I mean, with Levitt, you're talking about a guy that
- 10:29Speaker 4: does have a better physical skillset, right? Just size, arm strength,
- 10:33Speaker 4: all that sort of stuff. Um, I, I was talking to, to, um, uh,
- 10:39Speaker 4: to my buddy Brooks Austin over the film guy over
- 10:42Speaker 4: at the sec media days. I don't know if y'all
- 10:44Speaker 4: have ever talked to Brooks, but, uh, he said it best.
- 10:46Speaker 4: He said, Sam Levitt's going to get an NFL GM
- 10:49Speaker 4: fired one day because he's, because he's got, but in
- 10:54Speaker 4: this offense, I think what he meant was in this offense,
- 10:59Speaker 4: his skillset matches what lane wants to do to where
- 11:01Speaker 4: he's going to be able to function at a very
- 11:03Speaker 4: high level. He is going to put up big numbers
- 11:06Speaker 4: because everyone does in lanes offense. Um, But the mistakes
- 11:11Speaker 4: are the things that ultimately get you in trouble. And
- 11:14Speaker 4: I think if Sam Leavitt can purge those mistakes out,
- 11:16Speaker 4: he's got a chance to be really special. I have had, yes,
- 11:19Speaker 4: about staff members. I mean, I have had staff members
- 11:21Speaker 4: use adjectives like unbelievable, special. Sam's really been able to
- 11:27Speaker 4: show off the arm talent and the ability so far
- 11:29Speaker 4: in fall, which I think was encouraging because, guys, to
- 11:32Speaker 4: be completely honest, he wasn't there. He was physically there
- 11:35Speaker 4: in spring, but he couldn't participate because of the list, frankly.
- 11:39Speaker 4: And the offense was bad in spring. I mean, it
- 11:41Speaker 4: was Huson Longstreet and Landon Clark running the office. And
- 11:43Speaker 4: there was one scrimmage Lane let us watch. And he
- 11:46Speaker 4: gave us a ton of access in spring, like full practices,
- 11:49Speaker 4: watch scrimmages in Tiger Stadium, hole nine. There was one
- 11:53Speaker 4: scrimmage where the offense ran 10 series. They had five interceptions,
- 11:56Speaker 4: a lost fumble, and a missed field goal.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Like, it was bad.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Bad, bad.
- 12:01Speaker 4: And so to hear them kind of talking more positively
- 12:03Speaker 4: and even glowingly about the offense, I think is probably
- 12:06Speaker 4: attributed to the Sam coming along and coming into his
- 12:08Speaker 4: own in this offense.
- 12:10Speaker 1: We did a segment last week, crystal ball. If you
- 12:13Speaker 1: could look at these SEC contenders and they do one thing,
- 12:16Speaker 1: you can go on and pencil them in Atlanta to
- 12:18Speaker 1: play for the SEC championship game. And we were talking
- 12:21Speaker 1: about like we think Sam Levitt's going to be good.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Blake Baker's defense is going to be good again. but
- 12:25Speaker 1: between Durham and Harlem Berry, can they, can they identify
- 12:29Speaker 1: like a thousand yard guy? Can they be more productive
- 12:31Speaker 1: running the football? You look at Lane Kiffin, the last
- 12:34Speaker 1: four years, Ole Miss, probably the best four year stretch
- 12:37Speaker 1: in Ole Miss football history. They've had three of those
- 12:40Speaker 1: four seasons, thousand yard rushers, been able to run the
- 12:42Speaker 1: football at will. How do you see that coming along this,
- 12:45Speaker 1: this year?
- 12:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:47Speaker 4: And we actually didn't mention the guy that's going to
- 12:50Speaker 4: be the starting running back. Who's Dylan Jones. Um, That's
- 12:54Speaker 4: one that is probably going to surprise most people around
- 12:56Speaker 4: the sec. So Dylan Jones is a transfer from Wisconsin
- 13:01Speaker 4: and he was the starter at Wisconsin at the beginning
- 13:03Speaker 4: of last season. I believe he had a toe injury,
- 13:07Speaker 4: maybe at like turf toe and cost him the rest
- 13:09Speaker 4: of his season, but he emerged in spring and he
- 13:13Speaker 4: is not relented. I mean, Dylan, Dylan Jones is going
- 13:15Speaker 4: to be the starting running back. So I think between
- 13:18Speaker 4: Jones and Barry, that's going to be your tandem. But
- 13:21Speaker 4: you know the really interesting.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Thing, guys?
- 13:22Speaker 4: Look, LSU, let's just call a spade a spade. They've
- 13:25Speaker 4: been awful running the football the last two years. Last
- 13:28Speaker 4: and second to last in the league. Kiffin came in.
- 13:32Speaker 4: They completely remade the entire offensive line. They basically uprooted
- 13:36Speaker 4: all the guys that were here, except for Braylon Moore
- 13:38Speaker 4: and a few others that have lingered. But they went
- 13:41Speaker 4: and added Jordan Seaton, the left tackle from Colorado. They
- 13:43Speaker 4: added Alouba, who's a multi-year starter at Maryland, started his
- 13:46Speaker 4: career at Georgia.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I think.
- 13:51Speaker 4: the offense is built to where the the hole is
- 13:55Speaker 4: greater than the sum of the parts especially on the
- 13:56Speaker 4: offensive line but they like Dylan Jones a lot and
- 13:59Speaker 4: Harlan Berry has home run potential but the thing that's
- 14:02Speaker 4: most interesting looking at you know I think maybe on
- 14:05Speaker 4: the ancillary I knew this guys you'll probably do as
- 14:07Speaker 4: well just as principal but you know whenever you start
- 14:09Speaker 4: like looking into Lane Kiffin's offenses at Ole Miss to
- 14:13Speaker 4: try to project what it'll look like at LSU now
- 14:16Speaker 4: In his six seasons at Ole Miss, the quarterback was
- 14:19Speaker 4: the leading rusher or second leading rusher on attempts all
- 14:22Speaker 4: six seasons. So we can talk about the offensive line
- 14:25Speaker 4: and we can talk about Dylan Jones and we can
- 14:27Speaker 4: talk about Harlan Berry, but we got to also talk
- 14:29Speaker 4: about what Sam Levitt is going to mean in this
- 14:31Speaker 4: offense running the football because that is a dimension that
- 14:34Speaker 4: LSU did not have the last two years with Garrett Nussmeyer.
- 14:37Speaker 3: There was just no threat of the quarterback run at all.
- 14:40Speaker 4: And that is the dimension that this offense will have
- 14:42Speaker 4: that just was non-existent before.
- 14:44Speaker 2: I was hosting the Saban show back in 2008 when
- 14:48Speaker 2: Alabama went down to Baton Rouge for the first time.
- 14:50Speaker 2: And I've told this to many people all the time
- 14:53Speaker 2: that how much the Sabans love their time in Baton Rouge,
- 14:56Speaker 2: still love Baton Rouge and the LSU people. And then
- 14:58Speaker 2: that Saturday, that Friday and Saturday, it was just insanity.
- 15:03Speaker 2: And I expect it to be times two for Lane
- 15:06Speaker 2: going back to Oxford. Would you agree with that?
- 15:09Speaker 4: That 08 game is the comp. I don't even know
- 15:12Speaker 4: if it's a comp, but it's what I always point to.
- 15:14Speaker 4: That was the most animus I've ever felt in a venue.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Everybody loves their team, and everybody cheers hard, and there's
- 15:24Speaker 4: lots of... There's rivalries, and generally there's heated rivalries, but
- 15:30Speaker 4: you can always get along with people as well. That
- 15:33Speaker 4: day was just... People were angry that day in Baton Rouge.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Nick's first time back And remember, guys, Nick didn't leave
- 15:41Speaker 4: LSU for Alabama. I mean, I know your audience knows this,
- 15:44Speaker 4: but he went to the Dolphins. And people, I remember
- 15:48Speaker 4: when he came back to Baton Rouge the next year
- 15:50Speaker 4: with the Dolphins to play the Saints. Remember, the Saints
- 15:53Speaker 4: were displaced from Katrina. They played home games at Tiger Stadium.
- 15:56Speaker 4: And Nick brought the Dolphins into Tiger Stadium to play
- 15:58Speaker 4: the Saints.
- 15:59Speaker 1: And people were cheering for the Dolphins.
- 16:00Speaker 3: People still love Nick.
- 16:01Speaker 4: It was only when he went back to Alabama did
- 16:03Speaker 4: that flip, or when he went to Alabama did that flip.
- 16:06Speaker 4: And that day was, people were just, that's the best
- 16:08Speaker 4: way to say it, they were just angry. It was
- 16:13Speaker 4: unlike anything I felt before in Tiger Stadium. And I
- 16:15Speaker 4: tend to agree. I think in Oxford, it should resemble,
- 16:19Speaker 4: if not surpass that, especially the immediacy. And it's less
- 16:24Speaker 4: than 12 months later. It's the fact that Kiffin did
- 16:27Speaker 4: leave for a conference rival in the middle of a
- 16:30Speaker 4: playoff run. Then there's the Vanity Fair thing and everything
- 16:34Speaker 4: on top of it. And it's week three, so it's
- 16:36Speaker 4: not even like you have six, eight weeks of the
- 16:39Speaker 4: season to sort of get into it to see how
- 16:40Speaker 4: things are going.
- 16:42Speaker 3: That game was in November. Obviously, that Alabama-LSU game you referenced.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's going to be a whole scene
- 16:49Speaker 4: in Oxford here in a few weeks.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Is there a room already in the football complex planning
- 16:55Speaker 2: out security measures and special different things for the trip
- 16:58Speaker 2: to Oxford?
- 16:59Speaker 1: I mean, it's got to be different than a normal
- 17:01Speaker 1: road trip, right?
- 17:02Speaker 4: I don't know if there is, I haven't seen that room,
- 17:05Speaker 4: but I think the team, the team typically stays, I
- 17:08Speaker 4: think in Tupelo, either Tupelo or Memphis, depending when they
- 17:11Speaker 4: go up there.
- 17:12Speaker 3: So I don't think they're going to be looking to
- 17:13Speaker 3: spend a lot of time in Oxford proper.
- 17:15Speaker 4: I think they're going to maybe bust in, play that
- 17:17Speaker 4: game and get out as quickly as they can.
- 17:19Speaker 2: It could be one of those great 30 for thirties
- 17:21Speaker 2: in the future. They could be, there may be a
- 17:23Speaker 2: mock hotel that it looks like the team is staying
- 17:25Speaker 2: there with empty buses and everything.
- 17:27Speaker 1: And they're really at a different place. That'll be fun.
- 17:30Speaker 2: While we've been talking to Matt, Dabo Swinney has made
- 17:33Speaker 2: it official, finally, that Christopher Zina will be the starting
- 17:35Speaker 2: quarterback in that game. Matt, that is no surprise to anyone.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Dabo had not announced it yet, though. So you now
- 17:41Speaker 2: know the quarterback you'll be watching Saturday night.
- 17:43Speaker 4: You know, I think, I don't know if y'all remember
- 17:47Speaker 4: that game last year at Clemson, the LSU Clemson game.
- 17:51Speaker 3: But it finished 17 to 10.
- 17:54Speaker 4: And we, we thought we were watching this great, you know,
- 17:58Speaker 4: defensive battle with, with, you know, two top 10 teams.
- 18:02Speaker 4: We're just two kind of very average seven and six
- 18:04Speaker 4: football teams were watching. But, um, but that LSU defense
- 18:09Speaker 4: a year ago went to Clemson and really suffocated that offense. And, um,
- 18:14Speaker 4: and I was with club Nick and Antonio Williams and, uh,
- 18:18Speaker 4: TJ Moore, who's back in Wesco and all those guys
- 18:20Speaker 4: have four senior offensive linemen, uh, what an unenviable ask
- 18:26Speaker 4: for Christopher Vazina to make his first road start in
- 18:29Speaker 4: Baton Rouge, the Kiffin opener, um, everything going on game
- 18:34Speaker 4: day there, prime time. I mean, if you've been to
- 18:37Speaker 4: tiger stadium before, it's a, it's a venue that has, um,
- 18:41Speaker 4: that has its issues like every other venue they probably
- 18:43Speaker 4: built it too big you know at a time when
- 18:45Speaker 4: the home viewing experience was so good and the traffic
- 18:47Speaker 4: stinks and if it's hot people leave early or come
- 18:50Speaker 4: late or whatever but when you get the right ingredients
- 18:53Speaker 4: i still say it's as good a big game venue
- 18:54Speaker 4: as you'll find anywhere and saturday is going to be
- 18:57Speaker 4: one of those where all the ingredients mix together um
- 19:00Speaker 4: it wouldn't matter if lsu how about this shot at
- 19:03Speaker 4: southern cal It wouldn't matter if San Jose State was
- 19:05Speaker 4: coming in on Saturday.
- 19:08Speaker 3: It would be peak Tiger Stadium.
- 19:09Speaker 4: The fact that it's primetime game day here, Clemson, the
- 19:12Speaker 4: whole nine, Kiffin opener, it's really hard for me to
- 19:16Speaker 4: imagine Vazina with a new offensive line. Chad Morris, guys,
- 19:21Speaker 4: Chad Morris hadn't called plays since the COVID year at Auburn.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 19:25Speaker 4: That's the last time Chad Morris... He wasn't even coaching
- 19:27Speaker 4: a year ago, and now he's the guy that's supposed
- 19:29Speaker 4: to save Dabo's offense.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Man, this.
- 19:33Speaker 4: I don't think LSU is going undefeated. I don't even
- 19:36Speaker 4: know that they're going to the playoff. This is one
- 19:38Speaker 4: of those games, though, where I look and I go, man,
- 19:42Speaker 4: it is really hard to see the Clemson side of this,
- 19:46Speaker 4: how it could go well for Clemson Saturday night.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Dabo adds, freshman Taylor... Reynolds, who was in the battle
- 19:52Speaker 2: with Vazina, will likely play at LSU. So chance to
- 19:55Speaker 2: see two quarterbacks. A little package for him. Yeah, get
- 19:58Speaker 2: the old Tate Reynolds package. All right, Matt Moscona on
- 20:02Speaker 2: social media. That's where you follow him on Twitter. LouisianaSports.net.

- 21:34Speaker 2: Hardrock.bet backslash clay. We're back in a moment in the
- 21:39Speaker 2: next round. Okay, if you're new to the show, you know,
- 21:43Speaker 2: I'd say all three of us, particularly Lance gets the reputation,
- 21:47Speaker 2: but I'm just as bad as Lance. Technically, when it
- 21:49Speaker 2: comes to technology, I don't always.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Reach a very high bar. Is there something going on
- 21:57Speaker 2: with the X app on iPhones? Like, is there a
- 22:02Speaker 2: national something going on? Because my X app keeps disappearing
- 22:07Speaker 2: off of my home screen. Anything going on that I
- 22:10Speaker 2: should know about?
- 22:10Speaker 1: Let me check, see if mine is.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Is yours still on your home screen? Like, I try
- 22:16Speaker 2: to load it up and it disappears again.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Brooks, anything?
- 22:20Speaker 2: I have not had that issue. Mine's right here. Same
- 22:24Speaker 2: place it always is.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Makes no sense. I load it up.
- 22:27Speaker 2: I use it. Then I lock, you.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Know, I close my screen. Boom. It disappears.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Leaves a blank space on my screen. My daughter would
- 22:38Speaker 2: be laughing at me now. Dad, you're so old.
- 22:41Speaker 1: You're so old.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Do you have to go back to the app store
- 22:43Speaker 2: and reload it?
- 22:43Speaker 1: And reload it.
- 22:44Speaker 2: And then every time it disappears. I've only reloaded it
- 22:46Speaker 2: 22 times. Is that it?
- 22:47Speaker 1: Since last night. So the app is deleting every time.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Do you have to log back in?
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yeah, probably should turn the phone off and on, right? Maybe.
- 22:54Speaker 1: That's what the tech guy would say.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Log out, log back in. That's the equivalent of unplugging.
- 22:58Speaker 6: How much space do you have left on your phone?
- 23:00Speaker 6: Is it deleting it because you don't have enough space
- 23:03Speaker 6: on your phone?
- 23:03Speaker 1: I bet Jim can answer that question.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Being occupied or something.
- 23:12Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 23:12Speaker 1: How do you clear that shit out? I got no idea.
- 23:14Speaker 2: You have a lot of photos on your phone.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 23:18Speaker 2: I don't think. I do have a lot of photos
- 23:19Speaker 2: and videos just by what we do.
- 23:22Speaker 1: I'm hung up on the fact that iPhones will delete apps.
- 23:26Speaker 1: To save space on his phone.
- 23:28Speaker 2: For those who don't know, Tyler is the one green
- 23:30Speaker 2: text on the show.
- 23:31Speaker 3: I am, and I'm proud.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Tyler is the green text. Tyler is the reason our
- 23:34Speaker 2: group texts are all screwed up. I've got 12,000.
- 23:37Speaker 1: We can't name any of them.
- 23:39Speaker 2: We can't name any of them because of Tyler. 12,639
- 23:42Speaker 2: pictures on my phone.
- 23:44Speaker 1: See, and here's the thing, though.
- 23:45Speaker 2: That's a lot of pictures.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Here's the thing a lot of people don't realize.
- 23:48Speaker 6: And managing social media, I figured this out because I
- 23:50Speaker 6: do a lot of work from my phone at times,
- 23:52Speaker 6: especially when I'm on the road. um, these apps track
- 23:56Speaker 6: and store your data onto your iPhone. So like currently
- 24:00Speaker 6: my Instagram app is consuming over six gigs of storage.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Wow.
- 24:05Speaker 2: That's what it sounds like a lot.
- 24:06Speaker 1: And gigs is a lot, right?
- 24:08Speaker 2: Yes.
- 24:08Speaker 1: For example, I, yeah, gigs is a lot.
- 24:11Speaker 6: Uh, photos is half of that, which three gigs of photos,
- 24:15Speaker 6: which is videos included as a lot, but like, My
- 24:18Speaker 6: top three used apps are Instagram X and Spotify because
- 24:21Speaker 6: it's tracking and storing my data within the app.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Well, get rid of that stuff.
- 24:25Speaker 2: How big is that drive you told me we had
- 24:28Speaker 2: that we store all our stuff on?
- 24:29Speaker 1: Five terabytes.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Does that sound like a lot to you?
- 24:31Speaker 1: It's a big boy. It's a terabyte. It sounds like
- 24:34Speaker 1: a dinosaur.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Brooks was like, I said something to Scott about us
- 24:37Speaker 2: running out of space. Brooks says, oh, Brownie, that drive
- 24:40Speaker 2: Scott puts that stuff on is five terabytes. And I
- 24:42Speaker 2: was like, well, that sounds like a lot.
- 24:43Speaker 1: I believe one terabyte is.
- 24:45Speaker 2: You can stop right there.
- 24:46Speaker 3: It's 1,000 gigs.
- 24:47Speaker 2: You can stop right there. It does not do anything
- 24:49Speaker 2: to me. I just said that sounds like a lot.
- 24:50Speaker 2: It's only five terabytes. I'll run down to Best Buy
- 24:52Speaker 2: and get us another one. Yeah, we need more terabytes.
- 24:54Speaker 1: I'll do it.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Hey, part of the show today brought to you by
- 24:56Speaker 2: Crockett Coffee. They're a proud sponsor of the next round
- 24:59Speaker 2: here on Sport and State.
- 25:01Speaker 1: And that's the.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Coffee that was created by Clay Travis and Buck Sexton
- 25:05Speaker 2: and Buck's brother Mason. It's named after Davy Crockett, Crockett Coffee.
- 25:09Speaker 2: He's the hunter, the patriot, the backwood legend. And it's
- 25:13Speaker 2: even on the logo there, Surfing Crocodile. So you know
- 25:15Speaker 2: this coffee means business. You get the light roasted, medium roasted, dark, decaffeinated, organic,
- 25:21Speaker 2: or even the mushroom blend. It's always fresh. It ships
- 25:24Speaker 2: fresh roasted. It's not sitting on a warehouse shelf for
- 25:27Speaker 2: six months. And that's the promise to you. You can

- 25:35Speaker 2: free market intended. Free shipping on orders of $ 59 or more.
- 25:40Speaker 2: And there's a discount for veterans. And Crockett has partnered
- 25:43Speaker 2: with Tunnel to Towers, building mortgage-free homes for the families
- 25:47Speaker 2: of fallen service members and those injured veterans and first responders.
- 25:51Speaker 2: It's great coffee, made in America, doing some good. CrockettCoffee.com.
- 25:57Speaker 2: That's C-R-O-C-K-E-T-T, like Davy Crockett. CrockettCoffee.com. While we're on an
- 26:06Speaker 2: LSU theme, it got a little weird yesterday at the
- 26:09Speaker 2: news conference.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Now, this is gathered media in Baton Rouge like we
- 26:16Speaker 2: do all over college football, all over the SEC. And
- 26:19Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin is actually given some holy water by a
- 26:24Speaker 2: media member. Watch how it unfolds. Are you part of this?
- 26:35Speaker 5: Coach, the first bottle, Miss Terry showed you. That holy
- 26:41Speaker 5: water works miracles in Tiger Stadium. So you have one
- 26:45Speaker 5: holy water bottle for Tiger Stadium. And by the way,
- 26:50Speaker 5: she sprinkled on the east side. You'll be on the
- 26:52Speaker 5: west side. So I don't think there's ever been holy
- 26:54Speaker 5: water on the west side. And, of course, I had
- 26:56Speaker 5: to get you the road one like she had when
- 26:59Speaker 5: you guys came with Alabama here. And, of course, that
- 27:01Speaker 5: first one will get used in game three against your
- 27:05Speaker 5: former school. So from the media, we hope that– You
- 27:09Speaker 5: understand we appreciate the access you gave us. And from
- 27:12Speaker 5: a spiritual end, hope everything turns out okay for you.
- 27:17Speaker 7: Well, I appreciate it. That is accurate. I was right
- 27:21Speaker 7: there when she did it. So that's kind of a
- 27:23Speaker 7: crazy world we're in now. I'm on the other sideline.
- 27:26Speaker 7: So I remember walking by her twice when we were
- 27:29Speaker 7: 2-0 here. So I told Coach this summer, I said,
- 27:34Speaker 7: she needs to come, you know, for good luck and
- 27:36Speaker 7: walk with me down there. So I don't know if
- 27:39Speaker 7: she's coming to game day or not.
- 27:42Speaker 2: But the Sabans will be there for game day. Holy
- 27:45Speaker 2: water on the sidelines. Apparently Terry did it a couple
- 27:47Speaker 2: of times for Alabama.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I would think it would be more witchcraft, more voodoo
- 27:51Speaker 1: for Lane.
- 27:51Speaker 2: That was an awkward gift presentation. I just got to
- 27:55Speaker 2: say the whole speech and everything. I was cringing. I
- 27:59Speaker 2: was cringing for the poor guy that got the vote
- 28:01Speaker 2: for those. First of all, weird for the media to
- 28:03Speaker 2: give the coach a gift. I'm just going to, I'm not,
- 28:04Speaker 2: I would imagine, I would imagine it wasn't mass media
- 28:07Speaker 2: that decided this. I think it was this guy. I think,
- 28:10Speaker 2: let me just say this for the record. I think
- 28:12Speaker 2: the media takes themselves way too seriously, way too seriously.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Okay.
- 28:15Speaker 5: Yes.
- 28:16Speaker 2: I have never considered us media. I consider us in
- 28:20Speaker 2: the entertainment world. You have to determine whether we're entertaining
- 28:23Speaker 2: or not. We're not journalists. We're not journalists.
- 28:26Speaker 1: We're entertainers.
- 28:26Speaker 2: We're entertainers. Now you get to determine whether we're entertaining
- 28:29Speaker 2: or not. Some of you would say you're not entertainers. Okay.
- 28:32Speaker 2: That's fine. Um, So I've never considered myself a member
- 28:36Speaker 2: of the media. And I think it's pretty clear. I
- 28:39Speaker 2: literally just wore a black mask and made a football pick.
- 28:43Speaker 2: You are a member.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Of the media. You're not a member. You're not a journalist.
- 28:46Speaker 2: That's true. I just pulled the curtain back.
- 28:49Speaker 1: I'm not a journalist.
- 28:49Speaker 2: I thought that was the bandit.
- 28:50Speaker 1: It was.
- 28:51Speaker 2: I'm sorry. My apologies, guys. It's a Tuesday. My head's swimming.
- 28:53Speaker 2: All right. I think the journalists take themselves way too seriously.
- 28:58Speaker 2: But this is normally not what the journalists do. Give
- 29:01Speaker 2: the coach a gift and wish him the best of luck.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I mean, how much exterior shit can be going on
- 29:05Speaker 1: in Baton Rouge before a game? I can't remember. You
- 29:10Speaker 1: guys help me out. I mean, was there ever a
- 29:12Speaker 1: circus like this coming into a season? Okay, let's make
- 29:16Speaker 1: that our question right here.
- 29:18Speaker 2: The biggest... going into a year in college football. I'll
- 29:24Speaker 2: start that one year that SMU was under the gun
- 29:27Speaker 2: for the death penalty. Oh, I'll go even more recent.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Cam Newton.
- 29:31Speaker 2: As that season went on, it wasn't going into the year.
- 29:34Speaker 2: It wasn't early, but it became one.
- 29:36Speaker 1: But it became one very... Because nobody thought it was
- 29:38Speaker 1: a threat. And then they were like, oh, damn. yeah
- 29:40Speaker 1: this team's undefeated here we go.
- 29:41Speaker 2: About end of september on it was absolutely a circus
- 29:44Speaker 2: i mean you would turn you would tune into fine
- 29:47Speaker 2: bomb every day sports center every day and there was
- 29:49Speaker 2: something every day and i just had you know recently
- 29:53Speaker 2: had a chance to talk to gene chizik about that
- 29:55Speaker 2: and he was like oh there was something every day
- 29:57Speaker 2: there was somebody from um The athletic department, the president's office, compliance.
- 30:04Speaker 2: There was somebody in my office every day between film
- 30:07Speaker 2: study and practices. I was always meeting with compliance. I
- 30:09Speaker 2: had to be exhausting. I'll tell you what I can remember.
- 30:13Speaker 2: And this is before Alabama was as relevant as they
- 30:17Speaker 2: have been. So many may not realize what a circus
- 30:19Speaker 2: it was. But the offseason, I think it was after
- 30:22Speaker 2: his second offseason when Mike DuBose had the affair situation. Yeah.
- 30:26Speaker 2: And there was some thought that he might get fired
- 30:28Speaker 2: in the offseason, but he kept his job. Then he
- 30:30Speaker 2: lost to Louisiana Tech, and the athletic director got fired.
- 30:34Speaker 2: And a lot of people thought Mike DuBose was dead
- 30:36Speaker 2: man walking. And all they did was flip around from
- 30:39Speaker 2: that point on and win the SEC championship, and he
- 30:41Speaker 2: saved his job. I think the story actually broke at
- 30:44Speaker 2: the beginning of that season. Was it? I'm trying to
- 30:47Speaker 2: remember the timeline. Because there was a news conference where
- 30:50Speaker 2: he was going to address it, especially called News Conference.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Because my wife and I just started dating. And she
- 30:56Speaker 2: was in a car accident that morning, I remember it.
- 30:58Speaker 2: And nobody called me because they knew I was at
- 31:00Speaker 2: the most news conference.
- 31:01Speaker 1: So it was.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Before the 99 season? I couldn't remember if it was
- 31:05Speaker 2: after his first season? No, it was the year after.
- 31:09Speaker 2: It was the year that went very bad. It was
- 31:11Speaker 2: before the 2000 season. Oh, see, I thought it was
- 31:14Speaker 2: before the 99 season. Well, either way, that was a circus.
- 31:18Speaker 1: It's irrelevant. That was a circus. Hugh Freeze, his first
- 31:21Speaker 1: game ever at Liberty was in a hospital bed.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Was that his first game? Yeah, it was. Who were
- 31:27Speaker 2: they coaching? And he gives them the thumbs up for
- 31:30Speaker 2: the press box.
- 31:32Speaker 1: That was his first game.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Was that his very first game? I remember that on
- 31:39Speaker 2: Twitter more than anything. I don't think the game was
- 31:41Speaker 2: on TV. I think he had to stream it. No,
- 31:43Speaker 2: I think it was on TV. Was it? Yeah.
- 31:45Speaker 1: But I just.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Remember people were like, guys, I know you're not going
- 31:48Speaker 2: to believe this, but Hugh Freeze is legitimately coaching a
- 31:50Speaker 2: game from a hospital bed. They're like, only Hugh Freeze
- 31:52Speaker 2: would do this. And they had it turned so he
- 31:54Speaker 2: could see out of the press box. And it was
- 32:00Speaker 2: like for everybody to see. He's in the center. You
- 32:03Speaker 2: could get a shot on the TV cameras.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Yeah, he was in the center of.
- 32:06Speaker 2: The press box, and it was well lit. He wanted
- 32:09Speaker 2: everybody to see it.
- 32:10Speaker 1: It wasn't a circus until we were in the moment.
- 32:12Speaker 1: This has been traveling forever. The entire nine months.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Was he in? Did he have a headset on too?
- 32:18Speaker 2: I think he had a headset on too. If you'll remember,
- 32:22Speaker 2: Tyler's got the photos. All right. So, look at him
- 32:26Speaker 2: do an interview with ESPN.
- 32:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:30Speaker 1: I mean, that's real life.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Only Hugh Freeze would do this.
- 32:32Speaker 1: It's ridiculous.
- 32:33Speaker 2: It is ridiculous. Only Hugh Freeze would have done that.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Yeah, the ESPN interview is the real one. Yeah, Lane
- 32:39Speaker 1: would do it.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not real. the next one is though that
- 32:42Speaker 2: second one go to the second one right there that
- 32:44Speaker 2: was him post game i'm trying to remember who they
- 32:46Speaker 2: were playing um they lose the game.
- 32:50Speaker 6: And uh louisiana lafayette well no that was the next
- 32:53Speaker 6: one oh okay yeah they were playing syracuse i.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Want to say i'll tell you right here but i
- 32:59Speaker 2: mean just yeah there you go they're playing syracuse they
- 33:01Speaker 2: get drilled and he waves.
- 33:03Speaker 7: At the.
- 33:04Speaker 1: A ranked Syracuse team, by the way.
- 33:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:06Speaker 2: How long ago was that? Syracuse was ranked.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Do you guys even remember what was wrong with him?
- 33:10Speaker 2: He had a staph infection, did he not?
- 33:12Speaker 1: They said potentially life-threatening.
- 33:14Speaker 2: I just love the fact that it's so well lit
- 33:16Speaker 2: up there so everybody can see it. Like he didn't
- 33:18Speaker 2: turn the lights off so nobody pays attention to it.
- 33:21Speaker 2: It's well lit. That was a TV shot right there.
- 33:24Speaker 1: That's insanity.
- 33:26Speaker 2: I don't know if you can top that one as
- 33:27Speaker 2: the season goes on. Yeah, I'm afraid that's going to
- 33:30Speaker 2: be tough to top.
- 33:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:32Speaker 1: I mean, this belongs in, like, an episode of South Park.
- 33:34Speaker 1: I mean, it really was crazy. I mean, if you
- 33:36Speaker 1: look at Hugh Freeze's career arc.
- 33:38Speaker 2: It's wild.
- 33:39Speaker 1: It really is. It is wild.
- 33:42Speaker 2: I mean, the guy lived a life as a football coach, man. Okay,
- 33:45Speaker 2: so the SEC has 48 out-of-conference games this year. 48
- 33:51Speaker 2: of them.
- 33:53Speaker 1: 32 of them.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Are by-games, where it's not even in question the SEC–
- 33:58Speaker 2: Should win every one of those. So 16 legit games.
- 34:01Speaker 2: 16 legit games. And this came up on our show,
- 34:05Speaker 2: I think it was last week, because the way Josh
- 34:08Speaker 2: Pate of the great Josh Pate Show had projected the
- 34:12Speaker 2: SEC standing, somebody said, well, the SEC would have to
- 34:14Speaker 2: go 45-3 in non-conference games. for his standing to even
- 34:20Speaker 2: be mathematical possible.
- 34:21Speaker 1: But 13-3 seems realistic.
- 34:23Speaker 2: It does, especially when you say, okay, 32 of these
- 34:26Speaker 2: are gimme games.
- 34:27Speaker 1: So do you have the 16?
- 34:28Speaker 2: I do. So let's do this. I'll call them out.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Not point spreads. Just straight up. Just straight up winners
- 34:33Speaker 2: or losers. Florida State and Alabama. Alabama just has one.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Florida State and Alabama. Watching Florida State Saturday, I actually
- 34:41Speaker 2: think they're worse this year than they were last year.
- 34:43Speaker 2: I think Alabama will be better overall. If Caleb DeBoer
- 34:47Speaker 2: loses that one, It's gloves off.
- 34:49Speaker 1: I think people watched a different game than we did
- 34:52Speaker 1: or they just didn't watch because I've heard people say
- 34:54Speaker 1: Florida State looks improved.
- 34:56Speaker 2: I didn't see it.
- 34:56Speaker 1: I agree with you. I think Florida State is very,
- 34:59Speaker 1: very below middling. I think that they're going to be
- 35:02Speaker 1: a three- or four-win team. That is 1,000% Alabama has
- 35:07Speaker 1: to win that game. I'll go back. Arkansas at Utah.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Utah wins that game.
- 35:12Speaker 1: That's a loss.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Keep in mind, that's the late game. Arkansas is already
- 35:15Speaker 2: complaining about the kick time.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that's going to be a bad loss to them.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Baylor at Auburn.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I like Auburn to win. I think you guys nailed
- 35:23Speaker 2: it yesterday. Now, I think it's a little bit lower scoring,
- 35:25Speaker 2: I think, than both of you think. I think Auburn wins.
- 35:28Speaker 2: Baylor gets inside the 7.5. Is that where we are
- 35:31Speaker 2: right now at Hard Rock Bet? 7.5, somewhere in that neighborhood.
- 35:34Speaker 2: I had to score 27-20. You think it's a lower
- 35:36Speaker 2: score than that? Well, I think Auburn at 24. I
- 35:37Speaker 2: thought you said they would go over their point total.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Yeah, 27-20 is kind of a low score in this matchup.
- 35:43Speaker 1: I kind of lean with you. I think Auburn finds
- 35:45Speaker 1: a way to win, but I think it's a one-possession game.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:48Speaker 1: I'll go Auburn.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Not until the end of the year, but Florida State.
- 35:52Speaker 1: I feel like Florida.
- 35:54Speaker 2: I do, too.
- 35:56Speaker 1: By then, Mike Norvell knows that he's gone. They've got
- 36:00Speaker 1: two or three wins. They may not even be coaching
- 36:02Speaker 1: at that point. And by that point, Florida might have
- 36:04Speaker 1: all of this momentum where people are like, man, second
- 36:06Speaker 1: year is going to be special. Georgia Tech and Georgia.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Georgia easy. Yeah, Georgia easy. Louisville versus Kentucky. I will
- 36:16Speaker 1: take Louisville. Yeah, I would. Especially year one, Will Stein.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Yeah. NC State and Vandy. Well, boy, I tell you what,
- 36:22Speaker 2: in the offseason, I would have told you this is
- 36:24Speaker 2: going to be tougher. Vandy right now looks like a
- 36:26Speaker 2: much better team than NC State.
- 36:28Speaker 1: I still think we're going to sleep on NC State
- 36:30Speaker 1: based on the performance last week. I think they're going
- 36:32Speaker 1: to get better. I think they win eight or nine games. Boy,
- 36:35Speaker 1: that is a coin flip. I'm going to lean Vandy,
- 36:37Speaker 1: but I don't feel great about it.
- 36:38Speaker 2: I'll go Vandy. That game's in Nashville?
- 36:39Speaker 1: It is in Nashville.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Probably the toughest one we've picked so far. Even tougher
- 36:44Speaker 2: than Baylor-Auburn, in my opinion. Arizona State, Texas A & M.
- 36:48Speaker 2: A & M better win it.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Yeah. Ohio State, Texas.
- 36:53Speaker 2: I'm going to go Texas. I mean, that is the
- 36:54Speaker 2: toughest one to pick.
- 36:55Speaker 1: I'm going to go Texas, too.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Ohio State gets them, but I'll put
- 36:58Speaker 2: it down for you guys. Tennessee, Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Tennessee. Tennessee,
- 37:03Speaker 2: that's a W.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Damn, boy, the SEC is rolling their back. Yes.
- 37:07Speaker 2: How many losses have we got so far?
- 37:08Speaker 4: One.
- 37:08Speaker 1: South Carolina, Clemson. Got two losses. Arkansas, Utah, Louisville, Kentucky.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I'm high on Clemson. I'm going to go.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Where is that game?
- 37:15Speaker 2: South Carolina, Clemson?
- 37:17Speaker 1: Usually with me.
- 37:17Speaker 2: I know, but you didn't do it a minute ago.
- 37:19Speaker 2: South Carolina, Clemson. I've done it every time. I think
- 37:21Speaker 2: you said Bandy and C-State. That's why I had to
- 37:23Speaker 2: ask where it was because I thought it was in Nashville.
- 37:24Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I will say Clemson wins that game. I'll say Clemson.
- 37:29Speaker 1: I think it's a hell of a game, but I'll
- 37:30Speaker 1: go Clemson. I'm high on Clemson this year, as you
- 37:31Speaker 1: can tell. Oklahoma, Michigan. I like Oklahoma. Tough one for me.
- 37:37Speaker 2: I think Oklahoma is going to be down this year.
- 37:40Speaker 1: I'm just going to play to the better defense.
- 37:43Speaker 2: I'll take Oklahoma. But, boy, you had to drag that
- 37:45Speaker 2: one out of me. Missouri, Kansas. It feels like Kansas'
- 37:49Speaker 2: window is closed, doesn't it? Mississippi State, Minnesota.
- 37:54Speaker 1: In Minnesota.
- 37:55Speaker 5: Tough.
- 37:56Speaker 1: I mean, this is a game Lebby's got to win, though.
- 37:59Speaker 1: I think Minnesota's a six-win team, but I don't think
- 38:01Speaker 1: they get this one. I'll take Mississippi State. You're going
- 38:02Speaker 1: to take State here, huh?
- 38:03Speaker 2: Yeah. Wow. I was going to take Minnesota.
- 38:05Speaker 1: That's one of those.
- 38:06Speaker 2: We're split on that one.
- 38:07Speaker 1: And then this opening weekend, Louisville, Ole Miss.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Ole Miss.
- 38:10Speaker 1: I'll take Ole Miss, but I don't feel good about it. Yeah,
- 38:12Speaker 1: and Clemson, LSU.
- 38:13Speaker 3: LSU.
- 38:14Speaker 2: So that ended up being exactly the way Josh Pate
- 38:17Speaker 2: predicted it. Yeah, 13-3.
- 38:20Speaker 1: All the work we did, Peyton probably didn't even do
- 38:22Speaker 1: the work. He just threw it out there.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I mean, don't you think Peyton probably did that the
- 38:26Speaker 2: same way we did? You could throw out the bye games.
- 38:28Speaker 2: They're not going to lose those.
- 38:29Speaker 1: That's right, 32 of them.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Although Scott thinks Youngstown State can keep it interesting.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Well, I think we came to the Peyton number just
- 38:35Speaker 1: by the cumulative all of the SEC records, right? That's right.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Everybody said.
- 38:40Speaker 2: With his SEC records, that means the SEC has to
- 38:42Speaker 2: go at least 45-3. So there's no single bye game.
- 38:46Speaker 2: I don't think you've looked at all of them. There's
- 38:48Speaker 2: not one that worries you at all? Somebody's got Troy,
- 38:53Speaker 2: and I think Troy's pretty darn good this year.
- 38:55Speaker 1: I forget who it is.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Maybe Arkansas, maybe Missouri has Troy. I think it is Missouri.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and that one, I almost put it on here,
- 39:04Speaker 1: Troy at Missouri. Okay.
- 39:08Speaker 2: So that one would worry you a little i mean
- 39:09Speaker 2: you got to be buttoned up i mean troy's pretty
- 39:11Speaker 2: darn good this year yeah troy plays at missouri week
- 39:14Speaker 2: three they open with sam houston alabama state so we'll
- 39:17Speaker 2: know very little about troy until they go to missouri
- 39:20Speaker 2: now for the record missouri doesn't exactly play almost played
- 39:23Speaker 2: sam houston satan or upset alert against troy this weekend
- 39:26Speaker 2: how about that interesting spot for troy there they're uh
- 39:30Speaker 2: Missouri is at Kansas and at state. Yep. The Lance
- 39:34Speaker 2: was gone the day we did the trap games. I
- 39:37Speaker 2: thought you mentioned that as a trap game, didn't you?
- 39:39Speaker 2: I did, yeah. Because of where it falls. And because
- 39:41Speaker 2: of Troy being pretty darn good.
- 39:42Speaker 1: That's right.
- 39:43Speaker 2: And it's right between a road trip to Kansas and
- 39:45Speaker 2: a road trip to state. Interesting trap game. In my opinion,
- 39:48Speaker 2: Troy wins the Sun Belt this year.
- 39:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 39:50Speaker 2: That's a tough game for Missouri. I don't know what
- 39:52Speaker 2: the point spread would be, Lance, at Hard Rock Bet,
- 39:54Speaker 2: if you could just.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Oh, so in Columbia.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Missouri hosting Troy, a night game if that matters to you.
- 40:01Speaker 1: 13 and a half.
- 40:02Speaker 4: Oh.
- 40:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Pretty good little football game. So it's under two touchdowns, yeah.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Pretty good little football game.
- 40:06Speaker 2: All right, one more segment to go here on our
- 40:09Speaker 2: sport and state part of the show. Bobby Carpenter, the
- 40:12Speaker 2: great Ohio State and now college football analyst, pretty darn
- 40:15Speaker 2: good in the NFL, too, will join us in the
- 40:17Speaker 2: 12 o'clock hour on the next round part of the
- 40:20Speaker 2: show today, coming up a little bit later on. But
- 40:23Speaker 2: when we come back, Auburn's women's basketball team is doing
- 40:28Speaker 2: something that probably would get– I don't know, Clay Travis
- 40:31Speaker 2: on the road to scout something when we come back
- 40:34Speaker 2: on Sporting State. Isn't it crazy you can be so
- 40:37Speaker 2: good against other good teams and then end up losing
- 40:40Speaker 2: to teams that aren't as good? The Atlanta Braves are
- 40:45Speaker 2: 15-6 against the Dodgers, the Brewers, the Cubs, and the
- 40:49Speaker 2: Phillies playoff teams.
- 40:50Speaker 4: 15-6.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Yet there are something like one in four, one in
- 40:54Speaker 2: five against the Giants.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Baseball, weird sport.
- 40:57Speaker 2: It is a weird sport.
- 40:58Speaker 1: What a terrible year for Tony Vitello.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Yeah. You think he regrets being there yet? Maybe not yet.
- 41:06Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 41:07Speaker 1: You know, that season's such a grind. And when you
- 41:09Speaker 1: get into this time of year and you are, I
- 41:11Speaker 1: forgot how many games out they are right now. But basically,
- 41:15Speaker 1: they've been dead man walking for the last couple of months.
- 41:17Speaker 1: I mean, that's that's tough.
- 41:19Speaker 2: It is kind of funny to think in the best
- 41:20Speaker 2: of scenarios, he would have played his last game at
- 41:22Speaker 2: Tennessee two months ago, three months ago.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:26Speaker 2: And he's still coaching and they are going nowhere.
- 41:28Speaker 1: I mean, that's got to be. Has he already lost
- 41:30Speaker 1: more games this year than he's lost in his Tennessee career?
- 41:32Speaker 1: Probably in his career.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 41:34Speaker 1: I've just I've got to pull.
- 41:35Speaker 2: But to your point, Brown, he would have already cashed
- 41:37Speaker 2: that big check at Tennessee. That's right. I've done a
- 41:40Speaker 2: little recruiting. A little recruiting, but it's almost recruiting itself
- 41:43Speaker 2: at that point. Some portal work. He'd been on the
- 41:45Speaker 2: lake a lot. That's right. Up outside of Knoxville. He'd
- 41:47Speaker 2: been down to the Gulf Coast a lot.
- 41:49Speaker 5: A lot.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Probably had a home down at the Gulf Coast by now. Instead,
- 41:52Speaker 2: he's going road trip to road trip, and they are
- 41:54Speaker 2: going absolutely nowhere. 131 losses at Tennessee, so no. No.
- 42:00Speaker 1: But, I mean, if you went like the last five years,
- 42:02Speaker 1: six years maybe.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Yeah, he's lost more this year than he probably has
- 42:05Speaker 2: in the last six combined. He'll pass that 131 number
- 42:08Speaker 2: next year.
- 42:09Speaker 1: I mean, just real quick, 54, 63, 73, 81. 83
- 42:12Speaker 1: losses since 2020. And he's at 131. 131 total.
- 42:15Speaker 2: 131 total.
- 42:15Speaker 1: That's crazy. They're way below 500, aren't they? Yeah, but I.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Think he'll get the– yeah, definitely get the 83 this year.
- 42:22Speaker 1: So he's going to have more losses this year. than
- 42:30Speaker 1: he's had since COVID. Yeah, that's insane.
- 42:34Speaker 2: I think I would have stayed in college.
- 42:36Speaker 1: I'm not sure.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Tell us about XXXY Brownie, and I got one more
- 42:39Speaker 2: thing before we get out of here. It is the
- 42:41Speaker 2: shirt that launched a movement, basically. XXXY, that's what we
- 42:44Speaker 2: tell you. Jennifer Say, she was a world-class gymnast, and
- 42:50Speaker 2: she was the brand manager at Levi. And instead of
- 42:54Speaker 2: the president there, in fact, and instead of saying something
- 42:56Speaker 2: she didn't believe in, she walked away from Levi's. and
- 42:59Speaker 2: started XXXY Athletics instead. And this is their mission in words.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Empower female athletes and take a stand for fair competition.
- 43:08Speaker 2: So they have what they call the tee that launched
- 43:11Speaker 2: a movement, and they are also the official Nashville Balls
- 43:14Speaker 2: gear provider, Clay Travis Future WNBA franchise.
- 43:17Speaker 3: You can get your.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Nashville Balls merch at XXXYAthletics.com. This is real athletic apparel,
- 43:22Speaker 2: not just a slogan on a shirt. Performance tops, tanks,
- 43:25Speaker 2: sports bras, leggings, shorts, training sets, hoodies, hats, graphic tees,
- 43:30Speaker 2: men's and women's right there at XXXYAthletics.com. This is gear
- 43:35Speaker 2: that is worn by athletes who've actually put something on
- 43:37Speaker 2: the line, and new customers get 20% off your first
- 43:40Speaker 2: order when you sign up. Free shipping over $ 100 as well.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Here's the website, xxyathletics.com. That's xx-xyathletics.com. I'm pretty sure, I
- 43:53Speaker 2: know we did this for volleyball when I was in
- 43:56Speaker 2: high school, and I'm pretty sure I remember we did
- 43:59Speaker 2: this a couple of times. with the women's basketball team
- 44:03Speaker 2: with my fraternity down at the University of Montevallo. But
- 44:07Speaker 2: Auburn Women's Basketball, Auburn Women's Basketball sent this out. Male
- 44:14Speaker 2: practice players wanted.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Big, bold letters.
- 44:18Speaker 2: And they give you the contact information. The requirements is
- 44:21Speaker 2: you've got to be competitive, athletic, got to be able
- 44:23Speaker 2: to be at these practices, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 44:27Speaker 2: And then the benefits. You get early registration. You get
- 44:31Speaker 2: access to the practice facility and training facility. And you
- 44:35Speaker 2: get to learn about film study and how to scout
- 44:37Speaker 2: opposing teams. So basically, Auburn's women's basketball coaching staff, the
- 44:41Speaker 2: new staff down there, are trying to get male Auburn
- 44:44Speaker 2: students with some history of playing high school basketball together
- 44:48Speaker 2: to practice against the women's team.
- 44:50Speaker 1: I don't know if this is a bad move. I mean,
- 44:52Speaker 1: you're going to make your team much more physical. I mean,
- 44:55Speaker 1: that's the one thing. We played the UAB women's team
- 44:57Speaker 1: years ago, our park league team. And I mean, the physicality,
- 45:01Speaker 1: you can't replicate it just because, you know, men and
- 45:03Speaker 1: women are physically different. And I just, I think it
- 45:06Speaker 1: will ultimately, it almost reminds me of Tom Izzo. Like
- 45:10Speaker 1: a lot of people describe his practices as football practices.
- 45:13Speaker 1: And that's one of the reasons they were so dominant rebounding.
- 45:17Speaker 1: This will do, if you can keep everybody healthy and
- 45:19Speaker 1: not frustrate the hell out of them, I think it
- 45:21Speaker 1: will make them tougher and better.
- 45:22Speaker 2: Oh, I remember, I forget which coach it was, but
- 45:26Speaker 2: I'd heard of them putting on you know, football gear
- 45:29Speaker 2: almost and working down in the paint on some drills.
- 45:35Speaker 1: To your point, and I don't know if it was
- 45:36Speaker 1: Izzo that.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Did that, but there have been times you put on
- 45:38Speaker 2: pads and almost go full contact down in the paint
- 45:41Speaker 2: to work on what it would be like in the game. But,
- 45:44Speaker 2: you know, speed of the game, the physicality of the game.
- 45:48Speaker 1: The size.
- 45:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so, I mean, the thought would be here that,
- 45:53Speaker 2: you practice against men a lot, and then when you
- 45:55Speaker 2: play against female, the game's going to feel a little
- 45:57Speaker 2: bit slower to you. It's not going to be as physical,
- 46:00Speaker 2: but to Lance's point, are you too physical? Do you
- 46:03Speaker 2: get so physical in the men's game or playing against
- 46:06Speaker 2: the men that when you're playing against the women, now
- 46:08Speaker 2: all of a sudden you're too physical, you get a
- 46:09Speaker 2: lot of fouls. I guess that's the line you have
- 46:11Speaker 2: to walk there. It's the old, probably a bad analogy
- 46:15Speaker 2: here to use a bat in this reference, but Remember
- 46:18Speaker 2: when you would stay on the on-deck circle and you'd
- 46:20Speaker 2: have the donut to wait? Yeah, you'd swing that, and
- 46:22Speaker 2: then when you took the donut off.
- 46:23Speaker 1: And get up to bat. Bat speed was a lot different. Yeah,
- 46:25Speaker 1: bat was a lot lighter.
- 46:26Speaker 2: So in the chat, Jack Will says, colleges do this
- 46:29Speaker 2: all over. I thought it was a known thing.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Always have done it. I did not know this.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Krusty said, I thought all women's teams eventually practice against guys.
- 46:36Speaker 2: I guess they do. Brody says every women's team does this.
- 46:38Speaker 2: So I guess this is more common than I realized.
- 46:41Speaker 2: We were doing it back in the 80s. It was
- 46:44Speaker 2: volleyball at our high school. Coach Rushing. She thought it
- 46:48Speaker 2: was funny because volleyball is not physical, so we got
- 46:52Speaker 2: our eyes beat out. We couldn't pass, set, and spike
- 46:56Speaker 2: like they could, so they beat our eyes out. But
- 46:58Speaker 2: in women's basketball, it wasn't former high school athletes. It
- 47:03Speaker 2: was my fraternity team. You all played the Montevallo women's team? Yeah,
- 47:08Speaker 2: we got blitzed pretty good, but Y'all got blitzed? We
- 47:11Speaker 2: did in the second half. Y'all ran out of gas?
- 47:14Speaker 1: We were not in shape. We were not in shape.
- 47:16Speaker 1: Did y'all have any players at all?
- 47:18Speaker 2: No, we were not that good. I mean, it was
- 47:21Speaker 2: our fraternity team. So for those that don't remember the
- 47:24Speaker 2: story about your team playing the UAB, this started back
- 47:27Speaker 2: when we were on terrestrial radio. And you basically said.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Well, there was a back and forth with Nancy Lieberman Klein.
- 47:34Speaker 1: And I went downtown to play her one-on-one.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Play Nancy Lieberman Klein? Yeah.
- 47:38Speaker 1: How old was she? She was in her 40s at
- 47:40Speaker 1: that point. And you played her one-on-one? No, we were
- 47:42Speaker 1: supposed to. And, of course, she couldn't find a gym
- 47:45Speaker 1: or something. Long story. But anyway, it became kind of
- 47:47Speaker 1: a going thing on air. And the UAB women's team
- 47:51Speaker 1: got a hold of it. And we met. And we
- 47:53Speaker 1: ended up playing. I'll never forget. Our guys were smoking heaters. Like,
- 47:57Speaker 1: I've never been a smoker. But three of the guys
- 47:59Speaker 1: at halftime were just sweating their asses off smoking.
- 48:01Speaker 2: It sounds like Dunaway's fraternity team.
- 48:03Speaker 1: I mean, we smoked them. Now, I got lit up.
- 48:05Speaker 1: They had one good player, right? Deanna Jackson.
- 48:07Speaker 3: She was 6'2.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Best player in school history, I think. She went fourth
- 48:09Speaker 1: over on the WNBA draft. She had 28 on me.
- 48:11Speaker 1: I mean, she was unbelievable. That was who you were guarding?
- 48:14Speaker 1: That was who I was.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Yeah. You could not lock her down.
- 48:15Speaker 1: Yeah, but everything else was just mismatch. I mean, the rebounds.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Did they foul you out any at all?
- 48:21Speaker 7: No, no.
- 48:22Speaker 1: I probably had 15 boards, though.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:24Speaker 1: I mean, that's, that's my old ass could go out
- 48:26Speaker 1: right now in the WNBA and get eight to 10 boards.
- 48:29Speaker 2: Good. I don't know, man.
- 48:31Speaker 1: That, uh, Sophie, Sophie Cunningham is pretty aggressive and tall.
- 48:34Speaker 3: She is.
- 48:34Speaker 2: She is. So you got lit up.
- 48:37Speaker 1: Oh, we got lit up. But we didn't foul out.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Did Spud call the game? Yeah, he did. Yeah, we
- 48:42Speaker 1: had an official out there. I mean, if you want
- 48:44Speaker 1: to call him one. But, no, I love Spud. He
- 48:47Speaker 1: was nice enough to come out and do it.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Shots fired at my former trivia partner.
- 48:50Speaker 1: I love Spud. I'm just saying you only had one
- 48:52Speaker 1: guy out there. But the physicality of the game is
- 48:55Speaker 1: just completely different.
- 48:55Speaker 5: It is.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Yeah, so maybe Clay will go– Scout these guys when
- 48:59Speaker 2: he's starting to expand to WNBA down at Auburn. He's
- 49:02Speaker 2: got a camp to go watch now.
- 49:04Speaker 1: He can go do that.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Final thoughts before we get out of here. A legend
- 49:08Speaker 2: has been relieved of his duties at East Mississippi Community College.
- 49:14Speaker 2: Buddy Stevens has been let go after 17 years and
- 49:16Speaker 2: five national championships. I mean, we're right. We're into the
- 49:22Speaker 2: season now. And Preston Rice is going to take over
- 49:27Speaker 2: as the interim head coach. you just instantly think Buddy's
- 49:30Speaker 2: mouth finally got the end of it. It did.
- 49:33Speaker 1: Have you seen what he said? No.
- 49:34Speaker 2: Give me a second.
- 49:35Speaker 1: I'll pull it up. You know, that was when it
- 49:37Speaker 1: first came onto the scene, you know, because we had
- 49:39Speaker 1: that dip and, you know, I've never been a big reality.
- 49:42Speaker 1: There's been a couple of things that I've watched on
- 49:43Speaker 1: reality TV, but when the first time we saw Last
- 49:47Speaker 1: Chance U come into the fold, those seasons were so good,
- 49:50Speaker 1: especially the first one.
- 49:51Speaker 2: The first two years, but especially that very first year,
- 49:54Speaker 2: Because of this guy.
- 49:55Speaker 1: I mean, I thought Buddy Stevens was a dick.
- 49:58Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. I mean, a complete dick.
- 50:00Speaker 1: You're talking about public enemy number one. There was no
- 50:03Speaker 1: way I would have played for him. I'd watch him.
- 50:04Speaker 2: I'd be like, hell, I'd walk out the door right
- 50:06Speaker 2: now on him. Completely unlikable on that show. I'd have
- 50:08Speaker 2: to stop. I'd get so mad. I'd stop the episode
- 50:13Speaker 2: and have to catch my breath before I'd turn it
- 50:14Speaker 2: back on again.
- 50:15Speaker 1: I wanted to get so, yell at Buddy.
- 50:17Speaker 2: So apparently the junior college people made a change to
- 50:20Speaker 2: their playoff system because they're like, well, I guess if
- 50:22Speaker 2: the FBS is going to do it, we got to
- 50:24Speaker 2: do it too, right? And what they changed was you
- 50:27Speaker 2: had to win your conference to get in. There were
- 50:28Speaker 2: no at-large bids or something like that, right? So one
- 50:33Speaker 2: of the lead guys that did it was East Mississippi
- 50:35Speaker 2: Community College, the president there, and the Mississippi Association of
- 50:40Speaker 2: Community Colleges. His quote to the Columbus Dispatch in Mississippi there, quote,
- 50:45Speaker 2: they're idiots. It was really junkified, the way they decided
- 50:49Speaker 2: they were going to do it, and there wasn't a
- 50:51Speaker 2: lot of real thought. I was very surprised at how
- 50:54Speaker 2: it came out because there were actual people who have
- 50:56Speaker 2: doctorates that came up with this. And one of the
- 50:59Speaker 2: ones with the doctorates apparently walked in and said, you're fired. Yeah,
- 51:02Speaker 2: so it was Buddy's president that was one of the
- 51:04Speaker 2: guys in charge of the new playoffs. Do you get
- 51:07Speaker 2: the word junkified a lot?
- 51:08Speaker 1: Junkified, that's a new one on me. That sounds like
- 51:10Speaker 1: a Buddy Steven line.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Junkified. That was all junkified.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Don't you believe that somebody was waiting on him to say, like,
- 51:17Speaker 1: even internally, he had a lot of enemies.
- 51:19Speaker 2: Yeah. But, I mean, it's been a long time since
- 51:21Speaker 2: that show aired. You would have thought if he was
- 51:22Speaker 2: going to get fired, it would have been in the woods.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Ten years ago.
- 51:25Speaker 2: It's been ten years since that show was on?
- 51:26Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Yeah, ten years ago.
- 51:27Speaker 2: That portion of it, yeah. Because the other... 2016. And
- 51:29Speaker 2: then they went to that... Jason Brown, you want to
- 51:32Speaker 2: talk about Unlikable, that guy. Oh, he's very popular on
- 51:35Speaker 2: podcasts now. He may be, but I don't like him.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean.
- 51:38Speaker 2: That guy. Somebody who comes on our show did a whole, oh,
- 51:43Speaker 2: Tyler Siskey. He and Tyler Siskey did it. AJ McCarron's
- 51:48Speaker 2: on there all the time. Oh, I'm sure he is.
- 51:49Speaker 1: That's fine.
- 51:50Speaker 2: They can like him. I laughed my butt off watching
- 51:52Speaker 2: the Tyler or Siskey and Jason Brown. Yeah.
- 51:55Speaker 1: By the way, anybody that thinks I've got a potty mouth,
- 51:57Speaker 1: watch Jason Brown.
- 51:58Speaker 2: The single greatest moment in the history of that show
- 52:01Speaker 2: was the Jason Brown year when he's gotten the job.
- 52:06Speaker 2: And I mean, he's having to do 8 million different things, right?
- 52:08Speaker 2: Because there's a Juco coach in Kansas and they're playing
- 52:11Speaker 2: a really good team the next day. And they, they
- 52:14Speaker 2: do an interview like, we haven't had a whole lot
- 52:16Speaker 2: of time to install our offense. He's in a hot
- 52:18Speaker 2: tub the night before the game with a cigar and
- 52:20Speaker 2: a bourbon. He goes, I ain't worried about the offense, man.
- 52:23Speaker 2: I'm an offensive genius. I'll call the plays on the fly.
- 52:25Speaker 2: And then he was like 49 to nothing. I loved it.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Of all the last chance use, that's the episode that
- 52:32Speaker 2: sticks out to me. It's him in that hot tub
- 52:33Speaker 2: smoking a cigar. I ain't worried about it, man. I'm
- 52:35Speaker 2: an offensive genius. I'll call the plays. In the game tomorrow,
- 52:37Speaker 2: you just see the documentary crew. In the game tomorrow,
- 52:40Speaker 2: shouldn't he be studying or anything?
- 52:42Speaker 1: I ain't worried. I ain't worried. I'm an offensive genius.
- 52:44Speaker 1: I think he's living, in his opinion, his best life
- 52:47Speaker 1: right now.
- 52:48Speaker 2: And then it was like interception, touchdown for the other team,
- 52:50Speaker 2: and they cut to him. Yeah, I'm an offensive genius.
- 52:54Speaker 1: I will tell you.
- 52:54Speaker 2: Then they go back to the game highlights. Yeah, 49-0.
- 52:58Speaker 1: He didn't care back then, and he doesn't care now
- 53:00Speaker 1: what people think.
- 53:01Speaker 2: He does not. I do wish, I assume you're like me,
- 53:06Speaker 2: that occasionally there are things that you could watch again
- 53:09Speaker 2: for the first time without ever having the knowledge of
- 53:11Speaker 2: seeing it for the first time, because that first year
- 53:13Speaker 2: of Last Chance U.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Was really good. It was, but, you know, that's almost,
- 53:16Speaker 1: that reality TV is like sports, and you kind of
- 53:19Speaker 1: know the way it's going to go, the outcome. I
- 53:21Speaker 1: know you know the outcome of movies, but it just
- 53:22Speaker 1: feels a little bit different, but I've never gone back
- 53:24Speaker 1: and watched a reality show, so maybe.
- 53:26Speaker 2: I think the first year was good because it felt
- 53:28Speaker 2: like after that, everybody realized what made the cut for Netflix.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Once you saw it.
- 53:33Speaker 2: We're playing up to the cameras. That's right. If I
- 53:35Speaker 2: act this way, I'll make the cut. Yeah, like I
- 53:38Speaker 2: feel like our friend Brittany was, you know, she became
- 53:42Speaker 2: more and more of a focal point of bigger stars
- 53:43Speaker 2: that went on. That's right. Because they were in year two,
- 53:47Speaker 2: and she was very popular in year one. That's right.
- 53:49Speaker 2: So in year two, they had to focus more on her.
- 53:50Speaker 2: She was the cheese in the mousetrap.
- 53:52Speaker 1: I mean, exactly. They're showing one woman the entire time,
- 53:56Speaker 1: and it's our buddy Brittany.
- 53:57Speaker 2: She was the only woman to live in Scuba, Mississippi,
- 53:59Speaker 2: as far as I know. The cheese in the mousetrap. 20%
- 54:03Speaker 2: rule on the golf course. It's just I hate to
- 54:06Speaker 2: see it come to an end for Buddy Stephen, but
- 54:08Speaker 2: he won a lot of football games. Boy, did he.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Five national championships in 17 years, and now he'll watch
- 54:15Speaker 2: from the sidelines during this season. All right, two more
- 54:17Speaker 2: hours coming up. A quick break here. Thanks for being
- 54:20Speaker 2: with us on Sporting State. The next round brought to
- 54:23Speaker 2: you by Hard Rock Bets. Set your alerts, though, at
- 54:27Speaker 2: Next Round Live on our YouTube channel so you know
- 54:29Speaker 2: when we go live on that platform, which will be
- 54:32Speaker 2: in about three minutes. Until next time, God bless you.
- 54:36Speaker 2: God bless America.
