Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / Will SpaceX Booster Fire 33 Engines?
Transcript
- 0:00Booster 7 is currently in the mega Bay where SpaceX is,
- 0:03installing the inner circle of 13, more Raptor, two engines,
- 0:07which will bring the final count of booster engines 233 on the
- 0:11booster. This will be enough for a full
- 0:14static fire and for the orbital flight test in the future.
- 0:20But do we think they will do a 33 engine?
- 0:23Static fire. Well, fully stacked, and fully
- 0:27fueled Starship. Is dangerous if they do a static
- 0:32fire, a full static fire. So they might do 20 and then
- 0:37they might do 13 after that stagger the testing don't make
- 0:41it extremely violent with the 33 engines and those 33 engines in
- 0:47the static fire. May damage nearby equipment in
- 0:51the current configuration of the Starbase in Boca Chica Texas.
- 0:55Now, that doesn't mean that they're not going to launch with
- 0:5833 engines. It means that Things nearby may
- 1:01get damaged. So they may have to just wait
- 1:05for the launch to do the 33 engines in the future.
- 1:09So they're adding 13 engines right now to booster 7 and in
- 1:13the next few days, there are some road closures of Highway
- 1:17for, which means SpaceX will be testing Starship.
- 1:22Or booster 7 with, possibly more static fires, possibly a ring of
- 1:30And possibly, a ring of 13. So we didn't see the outer 20
- 1:34Raptor to engine full ring static fire.
- 1:36Before we just saw a few Legends fire, there's a to spend Prime
- 1:39test into static fires with booster seven so far.
- 1:43And then, once the ad the other 13, Raptors the system will be
- 1:48complete. They did a long-duration, static
- 1:51fire tests as well. And that was about 20 seconds
- 1:54long. And for the flight SpaceX will
- 1:58need a Valued system before they do a 33 engine full Flight of
- 2:04the booster and the Starship or even for the 33 engine, static
- 2:10fire because they need to dampen the sound and they need to
- 2:14dampen the damage that's going to be happening to the pad.
- 2:19SpaceX also has done some little tiny bit of watering system, not
- 2:25even a deluge system to the launch mount.
- 2:27It was underneath the launch model.
- 2:29Look like a you Sprinkler almost but is nothing like a space
- 2:32shuttle or the Apollo W systems or even a falcon 9 Deluge system
- 2:37where the absolutely flood the launch area.
- 2:40Now these two static fires that the Raptors on the Starship and
- 2:45also on the booster did they could just be for Gathering
- 2:49data. They took the booster back to
- 2:51the, the bay to fit more engines on it because they have enough
- 2:56data to show that it's okay to add those engines.
- 2:59Out of the Boost. And according to a recent FCC
- 3:04filing SpaceX cannot launch Starship before September 1st of
- 3:102022. Now, that doesn't mean that they
- 3:13will be launching Starship in September just means that the
- 3:18FCC license only allows them from September 1st on and that
- 3:23is an even an FAA launch license.
- 3:26Yet SpaceX needs to show that they're completely safe with the
- 3:31starship. Need to show that they've done
- 3:33all the rigorous testing in order to make sure that nothing
- 3:36will go wrong at the launch. But the FAA also knows that the
- 3:40SpaceX Starship is an experimental craft.
- 3:44So they understand that and they'll give them a launch
- 3:46license if they think that it's okay to launch Starship.
- 3:50So what's next for Starship? We may have another possible
- 3:54static fire for the show is brought to you by backblaze.
- 3:58I use back place to back up my podcast.
- 4:00My video files. With all of my writing stuff and
- 4:03all my photos. And you get unlimited computer
- 4:06backup for Macs and PCs for just $7 a month.
- 4:09You can backup your own documents photos videos.
- 4:12Drawings projects, all of your data and access your backed up
- 4:16data from anywhere in the world using the web app and you can
- 4:19access the files on your mobile to iOS Android apps all covered.
- 4:23And this is the cool part. This is my favorite part.
- 4:25You can restore it by mail or hard drive will come to your
- 4:27house with all your data shipped to your door.
- 4:30I could come to your business to and you Restore return refund
- 4:33program so you can buy a hard drive restore.
- 4:36Send the hard drive back within 30 days and get a full refund.
- 4:40So basically they ship you this hard drive and then you ship it
- 4:43back and you don't ever pay for it which is the perfect program
- 4:46for somebody who has huge files. You don't want to waste days and
- 4:50days downloading terabytes and teraflops of data.
- 4:53And if you're worried about accidentally, deleting your
- 4:55files to bucks extra month, you can increase your retention
- 4:58history to one year, and I use it for all of my So files comes
- 5:02in super handy, so seven dollars plus two dollars nine dollars a
- 5:06month and you get everything backed up.
- 5:08He's a mind for up to a year. And if you use the URL back,
- 5:12place.com slash Ilan, you get a fully featured 15-day.
- 5:17No credit card required, free trial, check it out, play with
- 5:21it. Start protecting yourself from
- 5:23potential, bad times, back your stuff up.
- 5:25It's recommended by the New York Times ink, macworld PC World,
- 5:30Life wire wired Tom's. I defied mac and more and it's
- 5:34recently been listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange under be
- 5:37lze. So you know they're legit back
- 5:39plays is committed more than ever to bring an easy and
- 5:42affordable data storage that you can trust don't be that person
- 5:45that forgot to back up their important files we've got your
- 5:48back sign up for a free 15 day trial no credit card required go
- 5:53there sign up I you with it it's really powerful and is really
- 5:57easy to use so go to back plays.com /l on backblaze Cam,
- 6:03Ilan backblaze.com. He'll on-chip 24 and we may also
- 6:10have a static fire for booster 7 in this next week.
- 6:15Now, how many Raptor engines will we see tested?
- 6:18We saw a single engine fire test, before we've seen two
- 6:22static fire tests from booster seven so far.
- 6:25So there's a possibility that they do.
- 6:29The inner ring, the 13, a single fire.
- 6:32Fire Raptor test on the inner ring and also possibly a little
- 6:37bit more long-duration, test on the ship itself on ship 24.
- 6:43So look forward to that in the next week.
- 6:46But knowing SpaceX, they may be taking it a little bit slow and
- 6:51they may do some spin Prime tests for the inner engines
- 6:55first and then they may do some spin Prime tests on some other
- 7:00engines and possible flow test as well.
- 7:02So we may not get another static fire this week so just keep that
- 7:06in mind and just so you know there's still a lot of work to
- 7:10do on the booster and also the ship.
- 7:13So there's a possibility. Leti, we might not even get a
- 7:17launch of Starship this year. Elon recently said it's going to
- 7:22be between 1 and 12 months before a successful orbital test
- 7:28flight of Starship. So what does that mean?
- 7:31That means that some of the early tests may not even make it
- 7:34off the pad. Maybe the first few might not
- 7:38make it off the pad, maybe some of those May destroy some of the
- 7:42equipment at the pad and they may have to rebuild some things.
- 7:46So that could push them back a few months just to rebuild some
- 7:51things that they run on the pad. So keep that in mind as you're
- 7:55going forward, that these first tests though they're going to be
- 8:00insanely. Cool, there's a future out there
- 8:04where SpaceX may not do it right the first time and Elon is even
- 8:07said he's going to be happy if it actually gets off the pad
- 8:10because this has never been done before.
- 8:12This is literally the most powerful rocket and the biggest
- 8:16rocket that will ever fly. Even if they get it off the pad
- 8:20in on, said, that's a huge success, but getting it to
- 8:23orbit. That's another thing that's a
- 8:26whole other thing, but if they do and when they do, this is
- 8:30going to open up so many doors for spaceflight in the future.
- 8:34This will open up doors for more science.
- 8:36This will open up doors for human, spaceflight to other
- 8:40planets. Mars of course but also human
- 8:43space flight to the Moon with the Miss programs and Artemis,
- 8:47one is actually launching at the end of August and people have
- 8:51always been saying, you know, he will what's going to launch
- 8:54first? The SLS or the Starship?
- 8:57Well, it looks like now that the SLS is going to be launching
- 8:59first because I don't think that Starship will be in any place to
- 9:05launch before. Starship is completely done
- 9:09because SLS on the 29th of this month, there are already ready
- 9:13to go and Starship. Are doing preliminary testing
- 9:17and they haven't even stacked Starship yet.
- 9:19So when they have to stack Starship, it may take a few days
- 9:24to get it all, ready to get it, you know, to get it in the right
- 9:26position and then stack it then went to stack.
- 9:29They have to gather data from that.
- 9:31So they may gather data for a day or two just from the stack
- 9:36and then they may do. Static fires of the booster few
- 9:41engines at a time. Maybe one engine to start.
- 9:44Then 2 then 5. Of the maybe 10 some in the
- 9:48inner ring, some of the outer ring.
- 9:49So that means that there's a possibility that it may take
- 9:53another month, just for those static fires, to be completed
- 9:57and also gather the data to make sure that Starship will actually
- 10:00stay on top of booster before they launch.
