- 0:01First Corinthians chapter 5 Let us pray.
- 0:08Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, you are holy, holy, holy.
- 0:21You are worthy, worthy, worthy, and Lord God, we are asking that
- 0:30you'll be here in this room. Teach us and guide us and show
- 0:33us your eternal paths today. Let us hide your word in our
- 0:37heart so that we might not sin against you.
- 0:41Lord, we believe that Your word is alive and active and it is
- 0:47sharper than any 2 edged sword. So God, give us the ability to
- 0:52rightly divide the word. Father, I pray in the name of
- 0:56Jesus for divine counsel. I pray in the name of Jesus for
- 1:02sound doctrine. I pray in the name of Jesus for
- 1:06correct theology. God, I pray that we can see
- 1:10Jesus Christ on every syllable, because the Word was made flesh
- 1:16and the Word became God, and the Word was God.
- 1:21So the Lord, we get out of our own way.
- 1:25Lord, we stop chasing our feelings and emotions.
- 1:29God, and we stand resolute on the Word today, from Genesis to
- 1:36Revelation, nothing added and nothing subtracted.
- 1:38God, it is your Word. It is infallible and inerrant.
- 1:42And God, we stand on every single jot and title.
- 1:48Lord, I pray that you'll take the whole word out to the whole
- 1:51world. Father, I pray that every
- 1:53continent, in every people group, every language and every
- 1:57tongue, God Almighty will be eternally blessed by your words.
- 2:01God, appear to men and women in signs and wonders and dreams and
- 2:08visitations. God, I pray in the name of Jesus
- 2:11for the man in white to come and rescue many out of the fire.
- 2:16God, I pray for a supernatural filling and zeal to fill your
- 2:21house. God, I pray that the church will
- 2:27be the church today. God, I pray that the gates of
- 2:32hell will not prevail against your holy church that you have
- 2:38instituted and that you are bringing by and by from glory to
- 2:43glory. Father, I pray for the nation
- 2:46Israel. God, I pray for the peace of
- 2:48Jerusalem. God, I pray for the ethnic Jews.
- 2:51Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray protection around them
- 2:56today. God, I pray against the spirit
- 3:00of anti-Semitism. Lord, in the name of Jesus, I
- 3:04pray that you, Lord God, will show us where we have erred in
- 3:12all of our theology and thought processes.
- 3:17God, I pray against the spirit of confusion within the church.
- 3:21Father, I pray that you'll make it plain, You'll make it clear,
- 3:24and that people all over the globe will understand their role
- 3:32in this entire scheme of things that God is going on in the
- 3:38world. I pray, Lord, against all of the
- 3:41powers of darkness, bind the enemy and cast him into the
- 3:47judgment that you have awaiting for him.
- 3:49Lord God Almighty, you reign supreme.
- 3:52You are the banner over our lives.
- 3:55You are the healer, God, You're the provider.
- 4:00Lord, you see everything. God, I pray that all things done
- 4:05in the dark will be brought to the light to day.
- 4:08Judge the secrets of men, Father.
- 4:11I pray that you'll purge out all of the dross and the impurities,
- 4:15God. Out of our lives and out of our
- 4:18families, Father, rebuke the Devourer from off of our
- 4:22children. Rebuke the Devourer from off of
- 4:25our finances. God, in the name of Jesus
- 4:28Christ, let us live in the light.
- 4:30God. Let us be salt to this wicked
- 4:32and dark generation. God, I pray that we will be
- 4:36found going out into the harvest.
- 4:39God, I pray that it'll be your name and only your name that we
- 4:42exalt high above everything. Let every man be a liar God, and
- 4:48all of our righteousness of filthy rags God, but we exalt
- 4:52your holy name, and we put on the righteousness of Jesus
- 4:56Christ that he won for us on the cross.
- 4:58Thank you Jesus Christ for your sacrifice.
- 5:03Holy Spirit, come and fill us and teach us.
- 5:06Holy Spirit discipline US. Holy Spirit, convict us, guide
- 5:12us through these words. I decrease as you increase.
- 5:16In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.
- 5:21Well, let's start in verse one. It is reported commonly that
- 5:31there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not
- 5:38so much as named among the Gentiles that one should have
- 5:45his father's wife. What is Paul talking about here?
- 5:53So it seems as if this man in the church has ongoing sexual
- 6:01relations with his stepmother. And the stepmother's not at
- 6:08church, so perhaps she's not a believer.
- 6:11But this man who is having ongoing relations with his
- 6:17stepmother is part of their church.
- 6:20And Paul here doesn't want to gloss over something that has
- 6:27been revealed to him. Perhaps Chloe has come and told
- 6:35Paul what it is that's going on in the Corinthian church and
- 6:42this would have been commonplace amongst all the heathen, but
- 6:48this sexual immorality was not looked at as being so nefarious.
- 6:59But this one was the icing on the cake.
- 7:03This was the cherry on top and Paul is saying that it is so
- 7:08incredibly debase that even those that are practicing sexual
- 7:14immorality would not even talk about it.
- 7:19It's not even to be made mentioned because it is so
- 7:24repulsive and disgusting in this incestual relationship.
- 7:31Verse 2 and you're puffed up and have not rather mourned that he
- 7:45has done this deed might be taken away from among you.
- 7:49He's saying we have to carve out the cancerous part of the body.
- 7:53We can't not just leave it within the body of Christ.
- 7:56And this is a huge plague upon the church capital C friends.
- 8:05And it is so ingrained in our culture that we don't see
- 8:10anything wrong with it. These premarital sexual
- 8:17relations that people get involved in and they come up
- 8:22with excuses like show me in the Bible where it says that you
- 8:27have to be married in order to live together and sleep
- 8:31together. And they have erred grievously
- 8:35because they have left their first love and they are choosing
- 8:39the things of this world. And Paul is saying, you haven't
- 8:42even mourned this thing, much less dealt with it.
- 8:46Verse 3 For I truly as absent in body, but present in spirit,
- 8:55have judged already as though I were present concerning him that
- 9:01has so done this deed. So Paul is saying, I've waited
- 9:06all in the balance and I have found him wanting because there
- 9:14is no conviction, friends. And if there is no conviction,
- 9:19then you have grieved the Holy Spirit into silence in your life
- 9:23if you are in fact indwelled with the Holy Spirit.
- 9:28And Paul just got done saying in the last chapter that only God
- 9:33can judge us. But then he turns around in this
- 9:36next chapter and shows us that within the body of the church it
- 9:42is our duty to judge someone who claims to be a believer.
- 9:49Friends, it is our responsibility to judge within
- 9:53the body of Christ because we must cut out the cancer and not
- 9:57be so incredibly deceived as to think that it does not affect
- 10:05the whole body. Those people are an example to
- 10:08the youth, they are an example to others, and they will look
- 10:12upon them. And if it is not dealt with
- 10:15friends, then it will become commonplace within that body and
- 10:20there will be so many ailments that come about.
- 10:25There will be so many plagues that come about friends.
- 10:30And what you need to understand is that demons cannot possess A
- 10:38believer, but they sure can influence, and they sure can try
- 10:49and get them to do things. They can come and try and make a
- 10:56mess out of so many people's testimonies that they are no
- 11:01earthly good, right, even if they are marked by the Holy
- 11:05Ghost. And that is what you need to
- 11:08understand. And Paul can see through it.
- 11:10He can see through all the smoke and mirrors.
- 11:13He can see through the physical realm and into the spiritual
- 11:16realm, and he can see how incredibly toxic this is to the
- 11:23entire body of Christ. And you need to understand that
- 11:29this oppressive spirit will manifest within the camp, and
- 11:35you must cut it out in the name of Jesus Christ.
- 11:39It must go. And Paul is going to deal with
- 11:42it in this chapter here. For in the name of our Lord
- 11:49Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, and my spirit
- 11:55with the Spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, that's
- 11:59the only power that we have, friends.
- 12:01That is the only name that is above all names, the name of
- 12:05Jesus Christ. And we bring that name upon our
- 12:10lips and expel all darkness in the demonic haunts.
- 12:13Friends, all of the demons flee at the name of Jesus Christ.
- 12:17Bring that name upon your lips today, friends.
- 12:21It cannot remain, It cannot stay, it must leave. 5 to
- 12:26deliver such one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh,
- 12:35that the Spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
- 12:39So we can see here that Paul has wisdom in understanding that
- 12:44this man needs not stay in the protection of the church.
- 12:51He needs to be put out, excommunicated from the church
- 12:56for a season, friends, until he becomes repentant and is able to
- 13:01understand that this is sin and it grieves the heart of God.
- 13:06But you can see here that he is still saved, as we would think
- 13:13of it, but he does not see the sin.
- 13:18And so by being placed out of the camp of God Almighty and
- 13:23into the world, in the systems of the world, he should come to
- 13:28his senses and see his depravity, see how he has erred
- 13:32from the faith and pierced himself with many sorrows, and
- 13:36come back repentant friends. And how incredibly rare is this
- 13:43discipline within the body of Christ today?
- 13:49If someone is put out of a church for their outward sins,
- 13:53their known sins, they just church hop to the next one and
- 13:58cover it over. And what you need to understand
- 14:03is that it is a grave responsibility of the shepherds
- 14:07over a flock to maintain the health of the entire flock and
- 14:12not just be passive and so accepting of all the sins within
- 14:20the camp. And not all sins are made known,
- 14:23but those that come to the light.
- 14:25We must deal with friends and we must deal with them gently, and
- 14:30we must deal with them in a loving way, but we cannot allow
- 14:34them to stay within the body. If they do not see it as sin, if
- 14:40they cannot admit, and if they will not confess and if they
- 14:44will not repent of those sins, they must be placed outside.
- 14:49And Jesus said, Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you.
- 14:56And we do not even realize how many times God protects us from
- 15:00this sifting of Satan. Just like with Job, whenever
- 15:04Satan comes and he asks to touch Job and God gives him
- 15:13permission, that is what is referenced in this one little
- 15:16verse. Friends, this is not eternal
- 15:19damnation as some are in the habit of believing it to be.
- 15:23So this is putting someone out of the body, putting someone out
- 15:29of the protection of the shepherd's care, so that they
- 15:32will see their need for repentance. 6 Your glorying is
- 15:45not good. Do you not know that a little
- 15:50leaven leavens the whole lump? Little bit of yeast, friends,
- 15:57makes all the bread rise a very minute.
- 16:01Scant amount of yeast will make an entire loaf rise.
- 16:08Imagine that. And that is what he's saying.
- 16:11This little bit of cancer will grow from stage 1 to stage 4
- 16:16overnight. It is so incredibly nefarious it
- 16:21must be cut out by the good surgeon. 7 purge out there for
- 16:29the old leaven that you may be a new lump as you our unleavened
- 16:36for even Christ our Passover is sacrificed to us.
- 16:39Paul beautifully flows from talking about bread right into
- 16:44talking about the Passover. And it's this beautiful
- 16:47congruent message, friends. And what you need to understand
- 16:53when it comes to food science is that if you were to keep your
- 17:01leavened bread for too long, it posed the risk of growing
- 17:07bacterial molecules that were harmful to you.
- 17:14And that is where a lot of our sicknesses have come from,
- 17:19friends, these microorganisms that we refused to sanitize.
- 17:28And Paul is saying here that every once in a while you have
- 17:33to in your own home, you have to go in and get rid of all of the
- 17:39cancer, all of the growth, all of the leaven, the yeast,
- 17:45friends, and start over from new.
- 17:48And when you do, the unleavened bread was used during the
- 17:54Passover and it points and paints a beautiful picture right
- 17:58into the blood of Jesus Christ covering us, friends.
- 18:02And that is what Paul is referencing here.
- 18:05And he wants them to know that even in the Passover he can use
- 18:09this example of getting rid of the yeast.
- 18:13And this was to signal and signify them having to tuck
- 18:19their cloaks in and run and not even give the bread time to
- 18:23rise. We must stay on guard and not be
- 18:28asleep, friends, for you do not know the hour or the day. 8
- 18:38Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither
- 18:44with the leaven of malice, wickedness, and with the
- 18:47unleavened bread, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity
- 18:52and truth. So he's saying cut out all the
- 18:55toxic behavior, cut out anybody who is unrepentant.
- 19:04And when you hold a supper, when you hold a gathering, do not
- 19:12allow those that are unrepentant, who have outward
- 19:16sin that has been already told to them that they need to be
- 19:23repentant. And if they refuse to be
- 19:25repentant, then we put them out of the camp, Warn A divisive
- 19:29person once, and then warn them again, and after that have
- 19:33nothing to do with them, for you can be sure that they are warped
- 19:37and self condemned. We need to be walking in
- 19:40sincerity and truth. We need to get rid of the malice
- 19:43and the wickedness. Friends 9 I wrote unto you in an
- 19:51epistle not to company with fornicators.
- 19:56So here there are many who want to know.
- 20:02What is the difference between what Paul is saying here in
- 20:05First Corinthians chapter 5 verse 9 through 11, and what did
- 20:10Jesus say whenever he said that it is the sick who need a
- 20:15doctor? And he was not afraid.
- 20:20Jesus Christ was not afraid to eat with sinners and tax
- 20:24collectors and prostitutes. And what you need to understand
- 20:28are those people, those sick people, had not yet placed their
- 20:33faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. And we Fast forward over here to
- 20:371st Corinthians in chapter 5. And what you are having to
- 20:42understand and wrap your mind around is that this is the body
- 20:47of Christ. Friends, he's talking about the
- 20:51capital C church that was birthed on Pentecost, and that
- 20:58is what is referenced here. And he is saying do not even eat
- 21:02with those people if they cannot see their need for repentance.
- 21:0910 Yet not all together with the fornicators of this world, or
- 21:13with the covetous, or extortioners or idolaters, for
- 21:17then must you needs go out of the world.
- 21:20So what is he saying there? Those are the ones that Jesus
- 21:22Christ could sit with, friends, the sick people.
- 21:27Paul is saying here, if you ever think that you're going to get
- 21:32to a perfect place on planet earth, it's never going to
- 21:35happen. It's never going to be an entire
- 21:40world of people who are sold out, laid down, lovers of
- 21:46Yahweh. We're going to have to wait for
- 21:49New Jerusalem for that point and that matter and that fact and
- 21:54that reality, friends. But in the meantime and in
- 21:58between time, we are on the narrow road and most are on the
- 22:03road, the wide road to destruction.
- 22:07You would have to go out of the world to find the perfect place
- 22:12does not exist here and now. But he is going to make all
- 22:16things new friends. And we will have the thing that
- 22:20we yearn for. We will have it will not be on
- 22:24this side of eternity, though. 11 But now I have written unto
- 22:30you not to keep company. If any man that is called a
- 22:34brother, be a fornicator, covetous, an idolater, and a
- 22:38railler, A drunkard and extortioner, with such a one, do
- 22:42not eat This communion, this sitting down to a meal, friends,
- 22:53was sacred amongst the believers.
- 22:56They held it in very high regard.
- 22:59And he is saying, if someone claims to be a believer, but
- 23:03they have no conviction for all the outward sins that they're
- 23:06committing, put them out of the church. 12 For what have I to do
- 23:15to judge them also that are without?
- 23:18Do not you judge them that are within there again, the same
- 23:23principle is made over and over and over.
- 23:25Paul is beating it down. Paul is making sure that they
- 23:30understand this repetition. He's saying unsaved people are
- 23:36going to do what unsaved people do.
- 23:38But those who claim to be believers ought not act like
- 23:43unbelievers. There should be a definitive
- 23:47difference within the body of Christ.
- 23:50Friends, this love and joy, this peace and patience,
- 23:55self-control, this gentleness, this meekness, this kindness,
- 24:03friends, we need to be exuding all of the fruits of the Spirit,
- 24:08and you will know that they belong to Christ by the love
- 24:13that they have for one another. 13 will end here, but them that
- 24:24are without God judges. Therefore, put away from among
- 24:30yourselves that wicked person. And Paul in his next letter to
- 24:36the Corinthians, he's actually going to rebuke them for leaving
- 24:40this man out of the camp for too long, that he needs to be
- 24:44restored because he was repentant.
- 24:47And it's beautiful how God works.
- 24:49And God's not angry. God's not an old grandpa and a
- 24:54rocking chair ready to smite and strike people down every time
- 24:57they get out of line. He is so loving that he sees how
- 25:01discipline is going to produce the perseverance and the
- 25:06character that we have always wanted within our own selves.
- 25:10And it does not feel good in the moment, but it produces all of
- 25:14the characteristics that we are desirous of deep down in our
- 25:18inner man. And God knows how to get us into
- 25:21this place of sanctification where we look more and more and
- 25:25more and more like Jesus Christ every single day.
- 25:29He's leading us home, Friends. Don't get in your own way today.
- 25:35Empty yourself of yourself and accept the rebuke.
- 25:41Accept the discipline. Don't run from it.
- 25:45Correction is not rejection, friends.
- 25:55The number one tool that every blood bought Born Again believer
- 25:59would benefit from the most is to develop an unoffendable
- 26:06spirit. Make sure you see your need for
- 26:12repentance today. I hope you've been blessed by
- 26:16this amazing chapter here in God's Word.
- 26:18I know I sure have. I love you, praying for you.
- 26:30God bless you. We'll see you back here
- 26:34tomorrow.
